AA Waterman and A. Lambert vintage ebonite writers
      9/30/2001:  scaupaug@aol.com
Vintage ebonite pens: Early AA Waterman twist fill pens - now how many AA Waterman's do you find on e-bay etc? Not too common (100 to 85+ year old), especially working (look them up in Frank's book and see how they are restored). These early self fillers (twist fillers) caused LE Waterman such rage that the company was sued and forced by LE Waterman to imprint a label on its pens "Not Connected with the LE Waterman Pen Co." beneath its own imprints! BCHR, crisp like new imprints, working/restored, $55 each The only drawback to this deal (normally they sell for much more) is that the nibs are non-original (though all 14K gold, iridium tipped, working, polished, smoothed, etc...they are not AA nibs). Note prices people charge for the restoration alone of an AA Waterman, and then compare the price here for the whole pen in perfect condition. Also, if you have a spare AA Waterman nib sitting about, tell me the size of the nib and I'll see about matching a pen for you. - - -MINT WITH PRICE STICKERS, 80+ year old Aiken Lambert early lever fillers in BCHR, some have minor shading and are $30, others don't and are $45. Rivot ball clips (same design as early Tiffany & Co. clips), fresh sacs, non-original 14K nibs at these prices (includes postage). Original flex nib models are $65 incl. postage. (sold out with these nibs, but still have some of the non original nib models in mint with price stickers) - - -Prices still too high for your tastes?! Then check out the $25 models in ebonite from 1915-1916> http://members.aol.com/scaupaug/admiral/index.html (link at the base of page) I have enough for many e-mails, so if you send an e-mail by Tuesday I'll most likely still have a pen available to reserve for you. The one exception to this: I have sold out of models with original nibs but have enough remaining to supply with non-original solid 14K gold nibs.

Fountain pen maintanence
      9/30/2001:  Manuel
I am new to fountain pen collecting and I would like to get your opinon on the following. (1) I have a number of fountain pens and I cannot use them all at once. My questions are: How long can I store a fountain pen with ink? How often should I clean (flush out) a fountain pen? (2) I know that I should use cold water to clearn the nib. Can I soak the nib in water over night? Is this necessary? Is flushing the nib with cold water sufficient? Should I use a mild soap? Thanks for your help. I know that these questions may seem elementary. I have been reading up on fountain pens and have gotten information from these sources but want to take advantage of the knowledge of other fountain pen collectors. THANKS!

New York Pen Show!!!
      9/30/2001:  Dean Tweeddale
New Flash!!, or update, however you want to call it here from the Premiere New York Pen Show. The benefit auction for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation went on as scheduled and with unexpected results. This auction, which relied completely upon donations from the pen collecting community and some others that had heard of the auction, generated nearly $35,000 for the charity. The Krone Anno Domini prototype numbered 1of 1, which was donated by Robert Kronenberger of Krone Pens, was the top lot selling for $12,000. I believe that this is the highest price paid for any pen at a US pen show auction and everyone was very pleased. I’ll get you more details and look for the complete show report in Stylophiles in the next two or three days. Dean

Dallas Pen Show
      9/29/2001:  Will Thorpe
Yep folks, it's that time again. Me, Billy Bob, Joe Bob and Gonzolo have started to pack the pens in the pickemuptruck. Last year I bought some great ink from Sam and some neat little plastic pliars for nib work (also good for pulling Mesquite thorns from tractor tires). Stipula was there and I played with that Iris for a (that's the pen named Iris buckaroos, Iris herself avoided me) long time thinking they might just give it to me (didn't happen). I checked out all the Conway Stewarts. My prize though was the Sheaffer B&P vest pen for $20. Saturday, October 13th, Richardson, TX Civic Center, SW corner of US 75 and Arapaho. Free admission, come early.

Passing of a Penmaker
      9/29/2001:  Michael McNeil
Hi Everyone, It is with sad heart that I am writing to inform the pen community of the death of my close friend Paul DuClos. He died at his home in Sacramento, California early this week, apparently from a heart attack. He is survived by his two Sons and two Daughters. I have included links to pictures of a couple of different pens sterling sliver overlay pens that Paul made. The snake pen was designed by his oldest son Marcel, whom I spoke with by telephone last night. Marcel told me that he wants to continue making pens. Whether he will or not I do not know for sure, but I will continue to encourage him to do so. http://home.teleport.com/~mmcneil/Nouveau1.jpg http://home.teleport.com/~mmcneil/Nouveau3.jpg http://home.teleport.com/~mmcneil/SnakePen2.jpg Regards, Michael McNeil Northwest Pen Works nwpenworks@yahoo.com

Dallas Pen Show
      9/28/2001:  Mike Walker
On Oct. 13, the North Texas Fountain Pen Collectors will have our 6th annual fountain pen show...open, of course, to collectors around the country. It will be at the Richardson Civic Center in Richardson, TX, on the northern edge of Dallas. Time is 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Have had a great time the last several years. The tables are just about sold out. Lots of room for visitors.

Montegrappa ink flow
      9/28/2001:  Steve
I have a Montegrappa Classica fountain pen, medium point. I really like the feel and the way it writes, but the problem is: with one ink (Lamy), the tip dries too quickly and with another ink (aurora), the ink leaks into the cap and makes a mess when I take the cap from the end after writing. Is this a warranty problem, or just a problem that comes with the territory? Steve

Pocket Knife to go with Yellow Mandarin
      9/28/2001:  Esther
Some time ago, when I purchased the Parker Yellow Mandarin LE, I thought that it would be nice to have a Victorinox (Swiss Army) Classic pocket knife in an almost matching color. I am offering my last one here for $15. Maybe someone else who used the Mandarin will find a place on his/her desk for this very useful little fellow. Thank you again, and please scroll down to see our special offers of pens.

      9/27/2001:  Bernie
I read all the posts in here even if I don't contribute very often. One thing that pleases me very much is the fact that the word STYLOPHILE is being used more and more. In consultation with a linguist, I made up this word from two Greek words which, when put together means "fountain pen collector". I gave permission to Bill to use this word for his reviews with pleasure. Keep-up the good works Bill. Thanks for the information you give us. Bernie, stylophile

PCA in NYC-Web Museum-PCA Pen
      9/27/2001:  PCA
Just a reminder that the Pen Collectors of America will be taking photos for the Web Museum this weekend at the NYC Pen Show. The PCA table will be set up all weekend, but photo times are Saturday and Sunday 10-12AM and 3-5PM - bring your pens to be phototgraphed! Thanks to all of you who have contributed to this project.

Also, in NYC, the PCA will have a prototype of the Pen Collectors of America 2001 Pen on display and will be taking advance orders for the pen. Full details on the pen follow. Please email me and I can send you a jpeg of the PCA Pen - sam@pendemonium.com

Pen Collectors of America 2001 Limited Edition Pen

The PCA 2001 Pen was designed to help celebrate the PCA's tenth anniversary. All proceeds from the sales of this pen go directly back into the PCA to fund ongoing projects and to help offset costs of publishing the PENnant, the PCA's award winning journal which is sent to members three times annually.

The PCA, whose members primarily collect vintage pens wanted to offer a pen that would be of similar design to a vintage pen and still have the convenience of today's modern pens. Thus, the taper cap design reminiscent of eyedropper filling pens from the early 1900s was chosen. As far as we know, there is no modern pen being made today that is of similar design.

Cap and barrel are made of bright red and black mottled ebonite, just as many eyedropper pens were originally made. The custom clip is removeable - remember that for most early eyedroppers, clips were an option to be added on by the pen dealer for a small additional fee. Two gold electroplated cable twist bands adorn the pen. A modern touch is that the cap when removed will thread onto the barrel forming a long taper, plus keeping it safely in place. The PCA pen can be filled with an eyedropper or used with cartridges or convertor. An eyedropper and convertor are included with each pen. The nib is solid 18KT gold and is available in fine, medium, broad and broad stub nib widths. Pens are engraved: Pen Collectors of America 2001 on the barrel. This is a limited edition of 188 pens, each is individually numbered.

The Bexley Pen Company in Columbus, Ohio has worked closely with the PCA to design and manufacture this quality pen. Bexley offers a limited warranty and will also be able to exchange nibs for a nominal fee should the need arise.

The PCA 2001 Pen will be available for delivery in late October. A prototype of the pen was shown at the Washington DC Pen Show in August and received rave reviews. PCA members received a flyer with information about the pen in their Summer/Fall issue of the PENnant. We have received many advance reservations and expect the 188 pieces to sell out quickly. Payment is required with your reservation.

Anyone wishing further information on number availability or how to order should contact Dan Reppert wasp1908@interl.net or Sam Fiorella sam@pendemonium.com

Thanks for your time! Sam

Dov...no offense
      9/27/2001:  Len Provisor
Dov, first of all, thank you for your kind words of condolence. Second, don't worry about the "bathroom products" comment, your sentiments are shared by many who wondered what Gillette was doing with a writing instruments company anyway, and we saw the results. Hopefully Rubbermaid/Sanford will help continue the proud name of the Parker Pen Co. So far as the NY Pen Show, will be there as will many others to help make this a truly remarkable event. You can be sure Dean will have reports up real quick after the show on the next Stylophiles. Now if only Dean could figure out how to have a live video feed from the grand ballroom of the show....

      9/26/2001:  scaupaug@aol.com
A few months ago many of you asked for certain murex pens that appeared in the stylophiles magazine. http://members.aol.com/scaupaug/admiral/index.html I have some used, but excellent condition murex pens (Sr. models, 1977) for $135 each including postage. FINE ONLY See link at base of above page for murex pens. I also have one mint striped available now as well as some other models in mint - and all are fine. In addition to the pens shown on the site here is an oddity: - early super flex Canada lockdown filler broad vacumatic, 2 band, double jewel, some wear on gold filled trim but the nib more than makes up for it, best of all the chamber is unusually designed with 4 column visuated stripes on 1/4th the barrel opposite each other to let light pass through to see the ink chamber whereas the rest of the pen is solid black, imprint reads "Made in Canada VACUMATIC Other Patents Pending" $220 Scaupaug@aol.com

some thoughts on the NYC show,
      9/26/2001:  Dov R
Wish I could be with all you pen lovers at the upcoming NYC show. One day I certainly will. This collector across the oceans sympathises and wishes to express heartfelt solidarity from the people of Israel, your true friends and allies in this part of the world. We share so many values and lifestyles, democracy, free speech, fighting terrorists who want to destroy these values and force their way on us by deeds (WTC) and words (UN @ Durban.) All freedom loving countries and people are united in their abhorence of the cowardly attacks. The perpetrators will no doubt pay a heavy price. This is not the Iraqi incursion into Kuwait of 1991. The Brits used to say keep a stiff upper lip. Keep the flag flying high, you are Americans, land of the proud and free and home to two great pen companies, one of which has gone to bathroom and shaving accessories, the other barely making it. So have a good and enjoyable pen show. The charity auction has great pens and they're all for a good cause. The Zuckers, steve and mary ann have worked hard to make this show a success. I look forward to Dean's upcoming Stylophile reports and pics (names too please) Dave Isaacson's infomails and all others.

penbid charity auction - last day!
      9/25/2001:  Sam - Pendemonium
Just a reminder that there is just about a day left in the penbid.com Charity Auction - all pens and related items have been donated, penbid has waived all fees so all money collected will go to the American Red Cross NYC Disaster Relief Fund.

One of the items I listed in this auction was a copy of Dubiel's Guide to Pen Repair (#89445), added to my one current production repair book is a prototype of the orginal Da Book donated by Frank Dubiel. Each of us will match the high bid up to $500, thus tripling the final high bid.

Da Books are currently at $168.50, making them THE most expensive copies of Da Book ever sold - which is exactly what we want, in fact we'd like to see it go higher since this truly is a good cause! Hope you'll take a few moments to peruse all of the items listed on the penbid NYC Charity Relief Auction and place some bids if you are able.

Sheaffer Collection
      9/25/2001:  Bill R
What Dean meant, when he so nicely said "let us know what you think", is let us know if we &^%$%$#ed up and misidentified any of the Sheaffer pens in the captions! Sheaffer's are not my strong suit, and so despite my best efforts, a boo-boo or three might have crept in. If you see something that looks wrong, let me know, and we'll get to work on straightening it out. And special thanks to those who have done exactly that on the other collections! It's been a big help in getting all the captioning info correct, and makes the Collections Gallery much more useful. Thanks, Bill

Quality Stationery
      9/24/2001:  Max
I just wanted to share a stationer with the board that I recently discovered: Smythson of Bond Street, London. I am sure our British friends are well acquainted with this firm; however, they have recently opened a store in the US. Their informative website is: www.smythson.com Their paper is the best I have ever used. Even with an extra-broad nib and wet Sheaffer ink, this very high quality paper did not feather. And, if it is important to you, they do carry the royal warrant as stationers to Her Majesty. (Personally, I am not a monarchist, but, apparently, the cachet does carry weight with some of the upwardly mobile (e.g., Hyacinth Bucket - pronounced bouquet). Smythson’s offers a moderately priced sampler which I highly recommend. Enjoy!

Swan Sac Replacement
      9/23/2001:  Will Thorpe
I always cut the sac to the right length and after coating the nipple spread the sac open with my needle nose pliars then put it over the nipple. I find it less messy and think I get a better seal. It's best to scrape any previous shellac/vernish/nail polish off the nipple first.

Warped 45s
      9/23/2001:  rbruce
For a decade I've owned two Parker 45s with plastic bodies (gray and dark green). The dark green, with gold-colored trim, has been in my regular rotation. I've recently noticed that they have developed a sort of warp in the grip, about a half-inch above the black nib housing. The grip flares out slightly above the girdled, warped area. Have other 45 owners noticed anything like this? Can anyone describe how it developed? Is it possible that this unevenness was always there and I just never noticed it? Hard to believe. Is the plastic deteriorating with age, or am I? rbruce

You can forget the nail polish - stick to shellac..

swan saccing
      9/23/2001:  einv
fitting a sac is very easy. just order the right size sac from pensac company or woodbin canada, and follow instructions found in 'da book' by FRANK DUBIEL. essentially, clean the sac nipple and apply clear nail polish to it before wiggling the sac onto the nipple. dry for 10 min. done!

New York City and the NYC Pen Show
      9/23/2001:  Deb Crosby
For anyone who is still unsure as to whether or not to attend the Pen Show in New York City September 28, 29, 30, the following excerpts from a New York Times editorial may help you to decide. It is clear that helping rebuild New York City, our spirit, and our economy is going to require lots of help in lots of ways--and one of those ways is to come to NYC as a tourist.

People have contributed and will continue to contribute in a multitude of ways. Each will do what he or she can do, and coming to a pen show right now may not be the way one chooses to contribute. We need to be supportive of each other, especially now, and I truly believe that all of us have the right to decide for ourselves how we can best support the efforts to rebuild.

So for those who can’t be there--I look forward to you seeing you at an upcoming show. And for those who will be in NYC this weekend, see you on Friday!

Regards, Deb Crosby

Osmiroid dip pen
      9/23/2001:  Sandy
I recently purchased some Osmiroid dip nibs. I know that Osmiroid made a pen holder for these nibs but I have not been able to locate one. I understand that the pen holder has a built in reservoir for these nibs. If you know where I can find one or have one for sale, please e-mail. Thanks, Sandy

Swan Pen Repair
      9/22/2001:  Max
Your advice is very much appreciated. Yes, the internal lever appears to be free of corrosion and still turns with the knob. Do you know anyone who can refurbish (re-sac) the pen? Thanks, Max

Swan Pen Repair
      9/22/2001:  D.Leung
What Mr. Lam failed to mention regarding the type of leverless that has a bar attached to the turning knob is that they are prone to internal corrosion and can subsequently become detached causing a difficult and potentially costly repair. You will need to check when you remove the old sack that the bar is still turning .

Swan Pen Repair
      9/21/2001:  Stephen Lam
For Max : Most leverless pens have nothing inside but a bar attached to the turning knob. When you turn the knob, the bar deflates the sac which will draw ink when the bar is turned back to the original position. If yours is of this type, all you have to do is install a suitable sac and it should work. Later models of Swan leverless use a slightly different design using a detached pressure bar.

NYC Pen Show/Parker "51" Beechcraft
      9/21/2001:  Len Provisor
I'll be at the NYC Pen Show next week, and will display the model of the 1946 Parker "51" Beechcraft. I have just received delivery of all backordered 1928 Parker Duofold monoplanes, and also all 100 of the 1948 Beechcraft that will be numbered and signed by Geoffrey S. Parker. I expect to ship all models within a few days of returning from NY. As of now I have fewer than 25 of the first 100 Beechcraft models left for sale. The next order for any sold up to the end of this year may take a few months for production, so if you think you want one, place your order now. I'm sure these last 25 will sell out in NY. After 12/31/01 this mdel will be retired, no more orders will be taken. Visit my website www.inkblotters.com to view this model and see vintage photos of both planes also.

Auctions/Red Cross
      9/20/2001:  aaron
I don't know how to reach the people running the auction directly or people who have posted a percentage of their proceeds to the American Red Cross. I hope that the contributions are made to Red Cross in New York, earmarked for the twin towers fund. Otherwise, it goes into general overhead funds for worldwide use. There are two specific funds set up by the city of new york with NO OVERHEAD. These are the funds for widows and orphans of the rescue workers who risked, and gave their lives so that others might be saved. The other fund with contributions going to a Twin Towers Fund for families of those who lost their lives, have contributions sent directly to the office of the mayor in nyc so none of the contributions go to overhead or wide ranging charities. This is the fund I believe that major corporations like Citigroup, Cisco, General Electric, etc. gave millions to seed this fund. I again hope that Red Cross funds be sent to NY Red Cross and specifically designated for the twin towers survivors fund, and not to general international red cross purposes. Thanks for reading.

PenBid Auction
      9/20/2001:  Frank Dubiel
Sam's post woke me up to what is going on at PenBid. As many of you know I tend to ignore auctions. This one is obviously different. So I'll try to help matters along. You are now bidding on TWO books. I have donated one of my two remaining first five copies of the original manuscript written in 1994. One was sold, two were destroyed making revisions. This is a loose leaf binder, typewritten and Xeroxed, one side only, with plastic covered covers. I originally considered selling Da Book in this format but deemed it too expensive and heavy. The 100s of changes in latter editions are obvious. I will send this large heavier edition of Da Book postpaid to the winning bidder under separate cover. Included with it will be a personal signed letter from me describing the edition and its prototype format. I will also match the winning bid up to $500 with my own donation to the American Red Cross NY Disaster Relief. So whatever is bid on these two books will result in a donation three times the final bid. Sam has agreed to this and is making the changes on the PenBid listing ASAP. I'm not sure if Sam will be able to put the photo of this prototype of Da Book on PenBid but I can email the picture to anyone who requests it. This is a real prototype copy. You have da author's word on it. The url is http://www.penbid.com/cgi-bin/auctioneer.exe?SiteId=Penbid&Item=89445 Last year one copy of the common first edition sold on ebay for around $75. It may have gone higher since I stepped in when others told me about it. This one has no upper limit and the second copy I've added to Sam's is truly unique. Bid it along gang. ALL money goes to Red Cross NY relief with Sam and I both matching your bid up to $500. for a final donation of three times your bid. Frank

penbid charity auction
      9/20/2001:  Sam - Pendemonium
Was just amazed (although probably shouldn't be since pen collectors are very generous people!)at all the bids and the amount of the bids on the items in the penbid.com NYC Charity auction. One of the items we placed up for bids was a copy of Da Book by Da Dubiel. High bid was up over $50 last night for this book that regularly sells for $20.

Decided to put a challenge to ya'll to make this THE most expensive copy of Da Book ever sold! Pendemonium will donate an amount equal to the final high bid up to $500 to the American Red Cross NY Disaster Relief fund.

As Regina has mentioned, all proceeds from this auction go directly to the American Red Cross, no fees to anyone. Many of the sellers have waived shipping fees around the world. The URL for the auction is http://www.penbid.com and the item number of Da Book is 89445. Be sure to check out all the other items while you're there!

Peter Stanton -- sad news
      9/19/2001:  David Nishimura
More sad news this week – Peter Stanton died on Monday after a prolonged illness. Pete was more a dealer than a collector, especially as regards pens, but he definitely knew his stuff and consistently turned up interesting pieces. It wasn’t luck, either, as Pete was one of the hardest-working dealers I’ve known. He put a lot of miles in, and he wasn’t afraid to take a shot at something big even if he wasn’t 100% certain. Pete was a regular at Brimfield, and used to be a pen show regular as well (at least on the East Coast, as he did not like to fly). In recent years pens hadn’t been turning up in the same quantity as before, and so his show appearances tended to be more episodic. He was definitely a character, and I’ll miss him greatly. His obituary can be seen at: http://www.projo.com/cgi-bin/story.pl/obituaries/06202271.htm

After reading Len's question about fountain pens on airlines, I checked the FAA web site, and also talked with US Air's security check point at the Syracuse, NY airport. All that the FAA site says is that no knives or razors are allowed to be carried on - they must be placed in checked baggage. The security person that I talked to said the same thing. He said that they may want to inspect the fountain pen, but they are being allowed through. You can visit the FAA web page http://www.faa.gov/apa/faq/pr_faq.htm

colored pencil
      9/18/2001:  Cindy
I recently purchased a pencil and am trying to find out what kind it is and what timeframe is it from. The pencil wood about 4 inches long adn 1/2 inch thick. One each side are 2 places carved out of the wood with leather straped across holding different colors of lead. The point of the pencil has a cut in it in order to change the colors of the lead that is being held on the pencil. Can anyone help me with these questions? Thank you, Cindy

re: "Parker style" gel refills
      9/18/2001:  Waco Johnny D
Unfortunately I've found the same to be true of most gel pens. Ball pens and rollerballs seem to be more-tolerant of angled writing than gel pens, which get immediately scratchy around 45 degrees. For a while I had a fascination with gel pens but now about the only gel I can tolerate is the 1.0mm Gel Impact from Sanford and even that's borderline for me. I will have to try those new Parker BPs. My all-time favorite disposable remains the Pilot Precise Rolling Ball V7 -- I wish they'd make a V9 or a V10!

New York Pen Show
      9/18/2001:  Dean Tweeddale
To go or not go to the New York Pen show is a choice that each and everyone that is considering will have to make. In most cases it is much like any other decision that you would make about your business or daily life. This is one of the great ideologies that makes the United States a wonderful place to live, freedom of choice without the fear of persecution. Many folks like I made a commitment to go to the premiere New York Pen Show six or more months ago. Others waited to make a decision to go only to find that last minute table space was at a premium and then sold out. These decisions were all made without knowing that the horrific events of September 11th were going to happen. Nobody booking the show could have guessed that terrorists were going to destroy the World Trade Center. Nor would have Maryann and Steve Zucker picked September 28-30 for the show had they known in advance of the tragedy that was to happen. It is with careful consideration as well as talking with many of the dealers that Maryann and Steve came to the conclusion that the show must go on as scheduled. They have heard from the Maki-e artist coming from Japan that they will be there; eBay will be at the show and plans to kick off a huge online auction to raise funds for the disaster relief fund. If I heard the numbers correctly they plan to raise $100,000,000 in 100 days. There will also be folks that have booked the show but due to the current circumstance will decide to not attend. This is okay also and whether folks attend the show or not we should respect their decision to do so. Its America remember, freedom of choice. I will be at the New York Show with the Penlovers table and I’m excited for the show to start. Yes, inside I will be mourning and have deep sorrow for the people suffering loss and probably have some apprehension about traveling to and from the show. Tuesday September 11th I woke up not in the best of spirits, you see it was several years back that this was the day that my first little girl took her last breath here on earth. Upon hearing and seeing the morning news that day is now shared with many families in New York, D.C., and other places through out the world. I’ve always believed that she became a little angel watching over and helping others that may be suffering. Maybe she’ll be watching over you as you travel to and from the show. Dean

NYC Pen Show support
      9/17/2001:  Len Provisor
Simon from the UK and Peter from the other side of the planet, thanks for your note about being at the show. What a great statement of support, especially knowing you are going to endure hours of security and pre-flight delays. I am positive that many who choose to not attend who otherwise had planned to, are no less loyal or supportive. It is a very personal choice and should be respected. It is in very bad taste to otherwise comment negatively on their choice. Some are so grief stricken or so conscientously distracted from the business of pens due to recent events, it is their personal choice for more time to heal. I will be there in body and spirit, I'll put on a happy face but inside the anguish continues.

      9/17/2001:  aaron edelman
I don't want "mark" to think that pity is what drives people to attend a show, it is the faith that America must go on. NYC will go on.It would be nice if people did what they could to help, and sorry if you thought it was about pity. It is about responsility. And about not cowtowing to fear.

NEW YORK PEN SHOW
      9/17/2001:  Allen Gross
It saddens me that Sam & Frank have decided not to come, but what makes this country the greatest country in the world is the freedom to make the choices that are right for you. Since the show has been planned for over a year, I think it's a mistake to think that buyers or sellers are profiting by the misfortunes of others. I'll be the first to say that pens are my living and I'm going to New York to buy and sell pens. I just don't see what the recent tragedy has to do with the show. Everything I read or heard is that New York city needs everyone's support and going to the show, spending money in the hotels, restaurants, theaters and etc. all help to get the city back on it's feet. Also, it is my personal belief that when you let these terrorists change your lifestyle, you've given in and allowed them to win. This is a 1st year show and it needs EVERYONE'S support. America has ALWAYS fought back and in the pen community this is how we can fight back. I will be there and it promises to be be a great show and auction, see you ALL there, Allen & Lil Gross

NYC PEN SHOW
      9/17/2001:  Aaron Edelman
Ask any hotel manager, storekeeper, restauranteur, or even the hot dog man on the street why the pain from people not coming to NYC will bring major pain continually to their family. Be a proud American and not let NYC fall prey to those who fear to come to NYC and keep what is left of the strongest economy in the world, falter further. Read carefully in September Penworld why Robert Kronenberger states he is supporting this show. One of his main reasons is Juvenile Diabetes. Should these children have to suffer further because some people are concerned with conscience and NYC. Let those whose conscience bothers them come and sell, and support the NY economy where I live.I have personally been touched with friends lost and still missing.Instead of not coming, consider coming and donating your profits to the children of the rescue workers who risked their lives and lost them to save others. Donate the balance to the Juvenile Diabetes. Let us not let fear keep pen people away from helping NYC in any way they can. Crawling into fox holes is not what we ought to be doing now.

NYC Pen Show
      9/17/2001:  Sam - Pendemonium
After much thought and discussion with fellow pen people both in and outside of New York City, Frank and I have decided not to exhibit at the New York City Pen Show. This is a very personal decision that each person attending or exhibiting at the NYC Pen Show will have to make for themselves. Our consciences are something we both will have to live with and for us, it is not appropriate to go to NYC to sell pens, while just a short distance away from the show venue, clean up and rescue operations will still be underway. In no way do we have less respect for those who decide to attend this show, just as we fully respect the Zuckers' decision to proceed with the show in view of the recent terroist attacks on NYC and DC.

Our heartfelt prayers go out to the victims and their families in NY and DC. God Bless America!

Healing New York
      9/16/2001:  Maryann at PenstopOnline
We are crying. We join the world in mourning for all those lost and missing and we are grappling with the unconscionable events of this past week. Our hearts and our prayers are with the families of those lost and missing on September 11, 2001 in these senseless acts of terrorism.

We have given much thought and prayerful consideration to the question of whether or not to go on with the pen show as scheduled. There are those of you who feel the show should be cancelled and those who feel it should go on. Both viewpoints are valid and it is not our wish to appear insensitive to the pain felt not only by ourselves and our immediate neighbors, but by everyone. There doesn't seem to be a "right" answer to this question but so many people have worked so hard to bring this event to life and so many of you have expressed to us the need for something positive to take place that we have decided to host the show as scheduled. Our hope is that we can, as a community, play a part in bringing some sense of order to all our lives and to a city in pain. It is critical for the local community that New Yorkers begin, immediately, to restore a sense of normalcy.

Nothing will be exactly the same again, but with your support, we can make a statement and start the healing process.

We hope that you will join us on September 28 - 30, 2001.

We are sorry for the delay in this update. We lost our internet access and our telephone lines the day of the disaster and we have temporary service as of September 16, 2001 at 10:00 p.m. e.s.t.Thank you all for your encouragement and support. We are proud and touched.

Yafa gel refills
      9/16/2001:  P. Suskin
The gel refills are nice even though they do lay down a somewhat inconsistent line sometimes. I have not encountered any writer's fingers. These refills definitely do not last long as I have been using one for about three weeks and it is almost empty. This refill is only about 1/2 filled at the start.

"Parker style" gel refills
      9/16/2001:  L. Levy
Hello to the board, First, my deepest sympathies to anyone who has suffered losses during the attacks on New York and Washington. The President has said that we should get back to daily routine. I've had a chance to buy and try the "Parker style" gel refills that Mr. Tweeddale wrote about in September 2001 Stylophiles. My observations: First, Swisherpens.com is a wonderful business to deal with. They knew what I wanted, and shipped me the product the day I ordered them. Kudos to them. Second, the product: they do fit any Parker bp. That's the good news. The other side of the coin is that they scratch; it's like writing with a pin, not a ball pen. The ink globs and blobs at the business end, all over the refill, the paper and the open end of the pen. If not careful, it will get on the writer's fingers and clothes. They do not write a consistent line, as do some RB's that I own. Finally, recent Parker bp refills do write much darker than what I was used to seeing previously. Bottom line is that I have a few "Parker-style" gel refills for sale at $2 each, plus postage. Best to all, L. Levy

Joon
      9/14/2001:  Adam
I visited Joon's midtown store at Grand Central this afternoon. Other than the evacuations they experienced yesterday, everyone's fine. Their downtown store is in the World Financial Center complex, not the Trade Center. As far as they know, it is not destroyed. However, there was a footbridge connecting 2 WTC to the north building of the Financial Center. That footbridge collapsed on Wednesday or yesterday, and the American Express building (which is just south of 7 WTC on the West side of West Street) is not in great shape. Everyone in town is still pretty shaken up, but messages have been coming in both on the pen boards here, at pentrace and the Zoss list, as well as personally from those with whom I've dealt. I very much appreciate the good wishes, and extend them to everyone who may have been affected by this tragedy. Best wishes to all. Adam Frank

Please pardon the newbie questions but I was wondering how many different colors Shaeffer snorkels came in. Also, can someone explain the nib identifications on the Triumph nibs (F2, etc.)? I'm guessing that the M or F stands for medium or fine, but I'd like to know what the numbers stand for. Thanks for your help. Jeff

Used Limited Edition Pens
      9/13/2001:  Anthony
Hi PenLovers. While most everyone else is anxious to get their hands on mint-in-the-box-with papers limited editions, I would like to cast out the following inquiry: does anyone have for sale USED Limited Edition pens? Ones I would be particularly interested in are Pelikan 1931, 1935, etc. (model 100 replicas), Sheaffer Balance (lever filler model), MontBlanc Oscar Wilde, and perhaps others. Also looking for Balance LE box and papers (without pen). Strange request, yes; but I like to write with 'em. Thanks for your consideration!

Joon's Store
      9/13/2001:  Skip Williams
You're right, I should have checked their website. The World Financial Center is the building complex just west of the World Trade center built out on landfill (in part from the WTC excavations). You see these buildings right in front of the WTC from pictures taken from the Hudson River or NJ. One has a domed cap, and another a pyrimidal cap. It has 4 large buildings with 8M SqFt where many financial institutions and brokerage houses are located like Amex and Merril Lynch. If Joon's store was on the WTC side of that complex, it's likely that it got blown out. Many of the windows on buildings next to the WTC were blown out on Tuesday.

Charity auction in Penbid
      9/13/2001:  Regina Martini
Everybody knows what happens in the States, 2 days ago. I don`t want to write much words about that terrible desaster, since it`s a penboard. But I want to help a little bit. I am organizing a Charity auction in coperation with Penbid. I am happy to get the full support of Penbid. Thanks to Steven, who gave me immediately a phone call. Of corse now we are looking for some pens. Penbid will open soon an own category for the sale. Everybody who wants to help, can put in the charity pens by himself. The sale will starts on 19th september, for 1 week. There is NO commission for the sold pens. All the pens needs to be paid with bidpay. Important is, that the shipping address is the Penbid address. I will give later details, when the new category will be open, and the exactly Penbid address. You will get a confirm from bidpay, that the person, who won the pen, has paid. With that confirm, you can ship out the pen. Penbid collect the checks, and will send them later to the American Red Cross. Thanks for all your help to assist in that matter. It`s a step to the right way. Regina

Parker Luck Curve Duofold Sr. & Jr. For Sale
      9/12/2001:  Bill Valentine
Penlovers, I am reposting my previous message below to include additional information ommited in the original post. I would appreciate your understanding. Greetings Penlovers! I have finally decided to sell my early Parker [Lucky Curve] Duofold Sr. and Jr. Black Fountain Pens. Both of these pens are in Exc+ to NM condition. I believe the dating for each would be approximately 1925-1927. I found the two of them in Victoria, B.C. over three years ago. Strangely, the iridium tips of each were missing when I found them. I had both tips replaced with new medium tip iridium by John Mottishaw in August 1998, and other than testing the pens after receiving them they have been idle ever since. I would like to sell both of these pens individually or as a set. [I am asking $275 for the Senior and $175 for the Junior.] Please email me for information. Thank you and best regards, Bill Valentine

FPH Boys OK
      9/11/2001:  Don Lavin
I am happy to report that I just got off of the phone with Ed Fingerman. All of the FPH employees and owners including Terry and Steve and Jake were able to escape the flying debris which actually hit their street after the second air strike. They then realized that they had to leave ASAP and were lucky to have found some transportation and get over the bridge before it closed. They are stunned and stupified but grateful to be alive and they want to thank everyone who have expressed for their safety on the various pen boards. So far they have not heard of any of our friends being injured or killed.

Recent horrors
      9/11/2001:  Don Lavin
In trying to ascertain if any of my friends in NY were injured or killed I found that on the dance boards, people with web skills have set up sites for people to check in so that the dance community can know that they are safe. I would love to see this board used in a like manner or have someone set up a similar site for pen collectors in the hard hit areas so that we can be relieved that they are safe and sound. As I have found today, phone calls are not doing any good especially since most lines are down or too heavily used to allow me to make contact. Thanks. Don

Horror
      9/11/2001:  Kristi
There is a great opportunity for each of us today to pick up a favorite pen and write a letter of gratitude to local law and fire officials. To thank them for their daily work as well as practice for catastrophic events whether natural or terrorist. Having been involved in teaching for law enforcement in Indiana, I know how seriously training is taken and the terrible fear that it might be needed. It is a day for journals and a day for thanks.

Re: Best Pen
      9/10/2001:  Dean
In my opinion the best new pen in the $50 range is the Aurora Style. There are several that cost half of that that are great new pens including the Senators and the Pelikan Futures. Of course you could go with a vintage one in which case I'd pick a Parker 51 Aerometric. Dean

Identification please: Parker pen model/brand
      9/9/2001:  Vere Scott
Can anyone tell me the model/brand of Parker pen I have? It is inexpensive, about $7 Canadian. It has a hard "rubber" [?] lower half to its body/barrel (good non-slip grip). It's top half is shiny metal. Mine is red but I've also seen black (upper and lower barrel). The upper red half is separated from the lower hard rubber half by a silver metal divider band; the bottom of the barrel has the same silver metal tip and the pocket clip and the top retracting "clicker" are both silver metal too. The only identification on the pen is "Parker" stamped on the upper metal half just below the point of the pocket clip. Opposite this (on the back of the pen: "IIN Made in UK". The "II" of the "IIN" don't appear to be the letter "I" as I've transcribed it, just two vertical marks without the serifs [?], the horizontal strokes on the top of the vertical strokes if you follow my meaning. The pocket clip has single "chevron- like" design. It looks like two symetrical simplified feather-like fletching as found on an arrow. I have searched the internet without success for an illustration of this pen. The only Parker pens that I've found illustrated are the more expensive ones ($35 U.S. and up). I like this pen but for two problems that I've had with this pen: 1. Pocket clip is rough on its inner side & rips my shirt pockets. I've had two of this brand so far and this problem is common to both. Very annoying. 2. After a couple of months the refill cartridge begins sticking in the barrel (?) when I click the top to retract it. One has to touch a finger to the ball point and push it to get it to retract. I guess I'm expecting too much design and durability from a $7 pen, even a Parker. One gets what one pays for? Finally is there any way one can contact the Parker Pen Company through a web site. I know Gillette has a 1-800 number.

FS: Oversize Lapis Conklin Endura Pencil

Hello all -- I have for sale an absolutely gorgeous, pristine, oversize lapis blue Conklin Endura pencil. Absolutely no brassing, functions perfectly, has an eraser (although hard as a rock). Aside from a couple of minor scratches on the pencil cone, this one is near perfect, IMHO. $150, including shipping within the USA. Thanks. Andy.

His Nibs.com update
      9/8/2001:  Norman Haase
Hello all! NOTE: If at any time you'd like to be removed from this update list, kindly email me and it shall be done! On the Hero front: Only two of the Dragon & Phoenix shell pens left -- and I don't expect to ever be able to get these in stock again: http://www.hisnibs.com/dragon_shell.htm The recently re-stocked '100' series are now down to one, two or three left of those finishes not already sold out: http://www.hisnibs.com/'100'_series.htm I'm excited about a new model I've just placed on the website, the '343' series, which features hand-painted Chinese flora and fauna on a hooded-nib pen. Again, as I explained in my last update, I have very limited stock in any of the new Hero models I'm putting up, as I went through a Hong Kong source this time, and not directly from the Hero factory in Shanghai: http://www.hisnibs.com/'343'_series.htm One of the most popular Hero models, the oversized '91', gets three new finishes: http://www.hisnibs.com/'91'_series.htm Finally, for those of you that pre-ordered the new Sheaffer Intrigue finishes, I've been notified that they've shipped, and I should get them at the beginning of the week (somehow, Sam at Pendemonium got hers first -- I guess living in Fort Madison still has some pull :-) ). Unfortunately, as mentioned in the last update, the new Legacy finishes have been delayed in shipping until mid-October. http://www.hisnibs.com/sheaffer.htm Don't forget the September Special when ordering!: www.hisnibs.com/specials.htm Most importantly, I predict that Williams will win the U.S. Open Tennis Championship tonight! Pilot Murex Pen Questions
      9/8/2001:  Bruce Pasarow
I read the recent (and excellent) Stylophiles Magazine article about Pilot Murex pens, but still have a few questions that I would like answered. I own a Murex all-stainless steel model (no stripes), but I am confused as to the correct model number for it. Is this the MU701 or the M-350SS? There are some small numbers and letters stamped onto the pen's section: M 477H. Does this have any special meaning? Is the ink converter removable or is it installed permanently? Mine seems to be pretty solidly attached to the pen. I don't want to damage it, so if it is removable, how can I do so? Finally, if the converter is supposed to come out, what type or brand of ink cartridges should be used it its place? Thanks for your assistance. Bruce

Trade: Compaq Ipaq PDA for a fountain pen?
      9/7/2001:  MT
OK, got a Compaq H3650 PDA. That little puppy died and Compaq replaced it with a brand new one. I used that one for 1 month and stopped using it. So, it's been sitting there unused. Anyone interested in a fountain pen for Ipaq trade? I prefer larger body pens. (At least as large as the Duofold Centennials or the Pelikan M800s, both of which I already have.) If you are interested, please contact me directly at learningcycle@aol.com Thanks, MT

Parker 180 & Sheaffer Inlay
      9/7/2001:  Cathy
Hi, I'm looking for 2 pens to replace those that I lost in the mid 80's. 1. Parker 180, (fountain) ladies pen, it's a brushed type of silver color (going from memory here) & has a gold band in the middle. There is no clip. 2. Sheaffer (ball point) is a gold colored, 14kt I believe, that was engraved, or inlay with a floral or rose pattern. It was a ball point. I bought both of these from an Office Supply store that I worked at in 1979-1980, so they were made during that time frame or prior, since they were new products. If anyone has either of these for sale, please feel free to contact me. I do TOS spammers, ;) Thanks, Cathy

Dean, my guess is that it was a bomb fuse. Didn't Sheaffer make devices for the war effort?

The very first Chicago Pen Club meeting
      9/7/2001:  Len Provisor
Boy, have I learned there are a LOT of unknown pen collectors out there in northern IL just itching to come to a pen meeting. Sunday Sept. 16 at 4pm, meeting at Borders bookstore on the SE corner of Waukegan and Lake-Cook Roads. Come to the Espresso Cafe where the caffeine is hot and strong and lots of pens for show-and-tell. I'm amazed at the many responses from as far as downstate IL and southern WI. So, be sure to make it a date, bring anything pen and ink related. Exit Tri-State 94/294 at Lake-Cook Road and go east a bit to Wakegan Rd, or exit Edens Hwy IL 41 and go west a short bit. E-mail for any questions/directions. Free ink blotters....:)

Re: Classy Pendemonium
      9/6/2001:  Dean
Dang, I knew I should have entered that contest. What was that thing anyway? I was fairly certain that it was a nib slitter, section fitter, feed setter, ring putter onner, clip springer, lever box installer, and sac sealer to speed up the assembly of pen manufacture. Looked like all you needed to do is put the pen parts in and out would come a writing instrument. Dean

Legacy in Vermeil
      9/6/2001:  Alan
Yeah, that is a hard pen to find but they are still out there. How do people feel about the Legacy? I have one and it does much better than my Edson, which cost about 3 times as much and is indeed quite similar.

Classy Pendemonium
      9/6/2001:  John Cutcher
As those of you who are on their email list know, Pendemonium recently ran a contest to identify a mystery Sheaffer item. I didn't win. :( But, Sam and Frank very nicely sent out, by U.S. Mail, a consolation prize to everyone who entered. It wasn't a big deal or anything, but I was surprised and impressed that they would go to all that trouble and expense. So this is a public thanks, and if there is anyone here who is wondering where to go for your ink, paper and other pen related needs, well, you can't do much better than pendemonium.com, folks. Thanks again.

The server which hosts my web site crashed this afternoon shortly after I posted the message about the red Pelikans. Thanks, and sorry for the trouble.

Sterling Legacy
      9/6/2001:  Bill R
Sheaffer did make a small run of the Legacy in a plain sterling silver pattern, with gold fill trim. I haven't decided if I like this one better than the Barley pattern (which I haven't managed to get my hands on yet!) or the CP4. So far the CP4 is leading, but they are all great pens. Bill

Lapis Duofold
      9/6/2001:  Bill R.
Well, heck, even discolored, a Lapis Senior Streamline is a pretty good pen! If the fact that it doesn't have "perfect" color lets you use it daily, without guilt or worry over damage or losing it, it might even be a better deal.... As for color, the color on the image of the Senior Lapis in the Collections Gallery (shameless plug!) is almost dead on compared to the pen in real life. Kepe in mind, there are at least two varieties of the Lapis color, White on Blue and Blue on Blue, this might make a bit of difference, and then of course, there was variation in the exact color of the different lots of celluloid used. In any case, like I said, I'm plenty envious of you for having a Senior Lapis, no matter what the color! Bill

Parker Duofold Lapis Question
      9/6/2001:  Mike
hey all...I just found a pretty Duofold in the Lapis. I am striken at the simple yet breathtaking design of this pen. It has gobs of problems with it to the point that it will be difficult to bring to writing condition. Those of you who have pristine Duofold, I am jealous of you! It seems to match the description of a Senior streamline in measurements. A big question I have is how dark the lapis is. The whole thing is evenly colored, but it is almost midnight blue in color. I had expected it to be a sort of Prussian Blue in color. Photos are not much help, as pens usually seem lighter in the photos. What do the lapis blue owners say about this color??

Sheaffer Legacy Polished Sterling Silver

We're doing up an acknowedgments page right now, but I suppose a little preview never hurts! We'd like to offer special thanks to the following collectors, who have very generously allowed us to photograph pens from their collections. It's been great to see the way in which fellow pen collectors are willing to share their collections, and some of the stories I've heard about these pens have been.... Shall we say envy inspiring? Anyway, thaks to: Ann and Arvin Chaikin, Anna Lawson, Adam Phillip, Alexandra Nyfors, and I think there was this guy named Dean something or other who had all these stainless steel Parkers.... Bill

Collections Gallery
      9/6/2001:  Bill R.
Thanks for all the input so far! I know what you mean about the sizes, the biggest problem we've had with putting a scale in the image was in keeping the alignment perfect. When faced with a hundred pen collection, (which actually means two hundred photos shot) it becomes impossible to spend more than a minute or so per pen, start to finish. Perhaps in the future we could include some of the measurements in the captions or accompanying paragraphs. As for upcoming Collections, we have a great Sheaffer collection coming in the next couple of weeks, it will be an overall collection, a little of everything. Also in the works are the Parker Vacumatic, Wahl Eversharp, and the Parker 51 (we will probably include the 21, 41, and 61 with the 51 Collection) As for the issue of copyright and printing, it's mainly that the images are not likely to print very well at all, at 72dpi, they're going to look great ona screen, but lousy on paper! The real concern though, is that several of the collections, or individual pens in them (and often the more rare or special pens) are from private collecters who have allowed us to shoot their pens, with the understanding that the images wouldn't end up anywhere else. We're especially grateful to these generous collectors, who have shared their collections with all of us! Anyway, thanks again for the suggestions and comments, and feel free to email either Dean or I with any other comments or concerns! Thanks, Bill

I apologize if this is a double post. This was sent to the Zoss newsgroup, and I thought it might be of interest to some of the readers here. "Rick Propas suggested that I write to you. Please post this to the listserve if you think it is appropriate: I'm a journalist and college professor seeking pen stories from people in the Washington, DC area, or those who come to Washington regularly on travel. Even if you're not a Washingtonian, if you think you have a pretty neat pen story, this is the place to tell it. This article will probably appear in the Washington Post. I'm especially interested in why you love pens. What is it about them? The look? The feel? The cachet of using something classic and elegant? The texture of the nib against paper? If you have a story about how you came to love pens, why you collect them now, what they mean to you, or how you discovered that "perfect find," please write to pens@traditionaldegrees.com. Any stories are welcome... whatever you can think of that conveys why you enjoy pens so much. scale on pen images
      9/6/2001:  Bruce Robinson
It would be a great help if either there was always a scale-bar or a ruler in the pen images, or if all the images were taken at the same magnification, and there was a scale on one, or if the length or width of the image were specified. For instance, I am curious to know the difference in sizes in the Duofolds shown, but one can not compare images easily if they may well be at different magnification. I realise the visual impact may be diminished by including a ruler, but there are other ways to let the viewer know what the scale is so comparisions can be made.

Duofold Gallery
      9/5/2001:  Len Provisor
Dean and Bill, great stuff. I especially like the running text and historical info which adds a lot of meaning to many who may not be familiar with the great variety of Duofold styles. Short of becoming a lengthy article otherwise for Stylophiles, this image gallery is very informative and entertaining. I look forward to other collections, especially the less commonly known pen makers you may display in the future. Consider also interesting background images such as literature from these pen makers, catalogs, ads or even vintage images from the period. Thanks

Re: Collection Gallery
      9/5/2001:  Dean Tweeddale
To James and others that may have the same question. First we choose the black background for the Collections Gallery because it shows off the pens the best. We tried other colors but we found that black was the one that we liked. The images in the Collection Gallery are Copyright © PenLovers.net and are not to be reproduced without permission. They most likely will not print very well anyway as they are optimized for viewing on your computer screens and for relatively quick loading. Keep in mind please that some of the pens pictured are from folks private collections that have given PenLovers.net permission to photograph for the Collection Gallery but not to distribute in print. These collections are primarily designed for your viewing pleasure and reference. They were not intended for folks to print out and distribute, this would violate the copyright. We have many more Collections coming as well as some exciting enhancements to the Collections Gallery that we feel you will all enjoy. Thank you for understanding. Dean

New Duofold Collection Gallery
      9/5/2001:  Bill R.
Well, we've finally gotten the Parker Duofolds up in the Collections Gallery! Actually, it's not just Duofolds, we lumped the Lucky Curve and Jack Knife Safety pens in with the Duofolds, in an effort to keep the seperate pages down. A warning, it DOES take a minute or four to load (just under four minutes on my 56K modem, to be exact)www.PenLovers.net and just follow the link to the Collections Gallery. For those of you who prefer the pens from Fort Madison to those from Janesville, we should have the Sheaffer Gallery up in a couple more weeks. We're doing this one as a single gallery, instead of breaking it up as with the Parkers, so it will be a complete run from the first hard rubber pens, through to the Intrigue. Any feedback on the style or design of the Gallery section would be great,if the pages are too big, or the sections are organized wrong, let us know. Likewise, any ideas for additional brands or models you would like to see featured! Thanks, Bill

Parker lighter butane refills needed
      9/4/2001:  R. Coelius
I've been searching to refill my Grandfathers WW2 butane lighter that, when you dismantle it, carries the gas in a mini gas tank that can fit in the palm of your hand. On the side is the inscription "Return empty to the Parker Pen Co" with the work "Butabloc". Does anyone have any information of the Parker Pen Company manufacturing lighters during WW2 and how I can order refillable parts?

Duo-Fast Pocket Stapler

Kensington Specialities
      9/4/2001:  Got Pale
I have cherished a particular fountain pen for many months now. It was sent, as a sample, from a British merchandising company called "Kensington Specialities" who print corporate promotional items in bulk. I have broken the barrel of the pen and need to replace it but don't know how to find out which comapny is actually manufacturing the pens on "Kensington Specialities"' behalf. What I like so much about this pen is the narrowness of the nib and that you could create tiny writing with it as well as draw freely and comfortably. It is gold in colour with "IRIDIUM POINT" and "GERMANY" engraved on the top along with some swirly, scrolly decoration. I would expect it to be extremely cheap and cheerful and need some tips about how I might track it down. Huge thanks to anyone who can and will advise.

His Nibs.com update
      9/3/2001:  Norman Haase
Hello all! This time out we have some Hero and Sheaffer news. I've just received an interim order from Hong Kong (not a regular Hero order from the factory in Shanghai), to re-fill some gaps in inventory, and to try out a few new models. Over the next couple of weeks I'll be putting up the pens on the website, but all of them are in very limited quantity, so if you see something of interest, I'd suggest grabbing it. Along with the Hero brand, I'll also be listing some pens manufactured by Wing Sung. First up is a pen that I'd given up hope of ever having in stock again (and unfortunately I was only able to obtain three) -- the Hero '903' Dragon & Phoenix shell pen. This handmade beauty was always my most-requested higher-end pen, and I was very unhappy when Hero ceased production (they said that they couldn't justify the time and labor involved in producing the pen as against their worldwide sales). The iridescent conch shell is hand-carved into a stunning dragon and phoenix, embedded in a dark lacquer, and every pen is slightly different. The accompanying pen box is also topped with a conch shell design. http://www.hisnibs.com/dragon_shell.htm You can also read more about the pen here: http://www.hisnibs.com/reviews.htm, and then going to the bottom of the page and clicking on 'November's Stylophiles', which is an article written in 1999 (just make sure to read the factual corrections on the linked-page above first). If anyone reading this is not familiar with the terrific online pen magazine Stylophiles, just follow this link to the latest issue: www.PenLovers.net. Next, I was able to re-stock most of the color combinations of Hero's best-selling model -- the '100'. Many years ago Hero came to the conclusion -- shared by a majority of pen collectors, I'd say -- that the single best fountain pen design was the Parker 51. The Hero '100' is their version of this great pen. I was able to obtain two new versions this time: a Golden Waves in Gray; and a gorgeous version with both cap and barrel executed in the Golden Waves pattern. http://www.hisnibs.com/'100'_series.htm Moving on to Sheaffer, my initial order from them is starting to arrive in dribs and drabs, and first up is the neat plastic version of the Javelin. I've been very impressed with these pens, and decided to carry them as the alternative to the now-defunct No-Nonsense/Vintage-type, as I've not gotten good feedback about the new Reacktor line. http://www.hisnibs.com/javelin.htm Finally, the Special Edition Blue Pearl pattern for the Legacy 2 (along with the two other new patterns, King's Gold and Emperor's Silver), has had its debut ship-date pushed back from September 1st to sometime in mid-October. Hopefully the new Intrigue patterns will still ship this week to dealers. Don't forget the September Special when ordering!: www.hisnibs.com/specials.htm I hope that everyone had a restful and safe Labor Day! Regards, Norman Haase His Nibs.com www.hisnibs.com

A Call for Articles
      9/3/2001:  Rick Propas
I would like to encourage Penlovers readers to consider contributing an article for the upcoming issue of The PENnant, deadline October 10. Our criteria for articles are few and straightforward and I encourage anyone interested to e-mail me. This issue will focus on Swan, so if you have any experience or expertise in that marque, do get in touch. We also would like to do an article on the new penmakers, not corporate makers but the smaller producers. Thanks

The PENnant
      9/3/2001:  Rick Propas
One of our members has suggested that I post regarding the new manner in which The PENnant is delivered to you (but only if you are a member of PCA). Previously the magazine was sent first class, for a number of reasons. Since the beginning of the year we have mailed bulk rate, primarily because it saves our members a lot of money that we can now put into the publication. This means that the magazine travels more slowly through the postal system and once it gets to your local post office it may go out to you in two days or two weeks, according to the preferences of your local post office. Of course this is less convenient but, as we noted, it seems a better use of scarce resources.

Ingersoll Dollar Pen
      9/3/2001:  Bill R.
The Ingersoll Dollar pen was an inexpensive pen, made during the 30s, as the name suggests, it sold for a dollar, considerably less than other "high end" pens, a Sheaffer Lifetime would run you $10. Bill

I am researching a pen I have which has Charles H Ingersoll wrote on top cap with a $ sign, initials on point which is 14 k gold, name on lower cap, I would say in good condition. Mr. Ingersoll was a public figure from what research I have come across, political, was probably his own personal pen.

Parker Flaminaire
      9/2/2001:  Kristi
Does anyone know if an adapter kit or refill mechinism is available anywhere for the Flaiminaire lighters? At a flea market today I bought one in nearly perfect condition in box with instructions. It is a fun piece to have with a couple of P 51s. Alas, Parker didnt design the lighter nearly as well as the great pens of that period.

MB 139
      9/2/2001:  Bill R
Well, get out the wallet! I would expect to part with a couple of thousand bucks for a nice 139. They're definitely a high end vintage MB. Not terribly hard to find a good one for sale, if you search around online and at a large show, but the price seems to be fairly consistant. I lucked into a "parts pen" 139 a while ago, and it's the centerpiece of my humble vintage MB collection. But, one thing I found, poor condition 139s are tough to come by, the one I got was the ONLY one I ever saw for sale in that shape, those that come up usually seem to be in at least very good condition or better. Hope this helps! Bill

philosophers and pens
      9/2/2001:  einv
the ancients used dip pens of course. dip pens actually have a certain rhythm to them that promotes thoughtful flow rather than the glibness a fountain pen inspires. a modern philosopher friend of mine loathes putting anything in writing until it is fully thought out over many days. after that, he word processes it in a couple hours. i would think that philosophy is one of those disciplines where the serious practitioners are very aware of saying too much, or writing streams of consciousness down. so i am not sure that they would collect or use FPs. as a physicist though, i have no problems about calculating or making notes with colorful FPs! i would think that a discipline like classics, or maybe social sciences, or literature would be more suited to consistent FP use. at any rate, it is a personal preference, your opinion or mine may make no difference in that regard!

parker frontier
      9/2/2001:  einv
as far as i am aware, parker frontier is a nice low end pen comparable to sheaffer javelin or waterman phileas. i have two, one with black barrel and chrome cap and trim, and one in stainless steel and gold plated trim. (both have rubber grip). i suspect the 'silver' model you are looking for is merely a stainless steel one with chrome trim. ashford had a sale on these for 20 bucks each. BTW, the frontier is eligible for nib exchange.. i have a extra broad italic on the stainless one. good luck!

pen in books too!

Wahl Ball BP
      9/1/2001:  Sam - Pendemonium
Keith, I can't shed a lot of light on your Wahl Ball, other than it was made by Eversharp in the late 1940s, came in several different barrel colors. Have seen chrome caps with GP clips and the all GP cap & clip. Gostony values it at $15 - $20 in The Incredible Ballpoint and that seems on target to prices I've seen them sell for.

>>>>KEITH WROTE: OK. I think this one might be tricky. Does anyone know anything at all about the WAHL BALL ballpoint pen? Mine is made in Canada by Eversharp and is red with a chrome cap and gold clip that says WAHL BALL on it. I haven't found anything yet on any of my usual (fountain) pen sites, but it's obviously an early non-retracting ballpoint - looks like late 40's to mid 50's to me. Any clues???HELP!!

News from Sanford: Parker Waterman rOtring
      9/1/2001:  Len Provisor
I learned today that Sanford, a division of Newell/Rubbermaid, parent to Parker Waterman and rOtring will shortly announce the creation of a Fine Writing Instruments Division. This Division will feature upscale, Limited Edition and higher priced quality pens from the above mentioned brands. An apparent purpose would be to separate this Division's image from their more popular priced products such as Paper-Mate, Sharpie and other pens that are wrapped in plastic and mounted on peg boards. Although a very profitable segment of their markets, it is a smart move to create a new image for their luxury brands and get them lined up with the other big names in the pen game. Now nine months since Newell/Rubbermaid purchased the Stationery Products Division from Gillette, Sanford is about to introduce their first luxury product, the Parker Duofold Mosaic. The Mosaic was almost completed by Gillette at the time of the division's sale, and I'm very glad to see Sanford remaining committed to new product introduction within the Parker brand. Personally I would love to see the Parker name once again on the very top of the heap of pen makers, well deserved after a magnificent 115 year Americana history.
