| Looking for Duofold Pencil | |
| 9/30/2000: Larry Shelton | |
| Couple of weeks ago I posted that I was looking for a red Streamline Senior pencil. A gentleman emailed informing me he had what I was looking for. Unfortunately I guess he was simply letting me know he had one in "his" collection. My email and follow up email never received a response. Every hobby has it's comedians..... Anyway, I'm still looking for a Red Senior Duofold Streamline Pencil in good shape. If anyone has one they wish to "sell" at a fair price please let me know. If you have one in your collection, that's great but don't feel obligated to email just to let me know you have one...... | |

| You didn't say whether you were looking for pre-loved modern fountain pens or vintage ones. Either way lots of the advertisers here on Penlovers sell preowned pens. Some focus on the vintage ones and some on the modern ones. Take a few moments and explore their sites by simply clicking their banners. | |

| 9/29/2000: Len Provisor | |
| It's a Snorkel, it kinda works, dent free, really good condition....only problem, I found this beauty recently ....without a cap. Dang !! If this is something you just gotta have, let me know. I'll be bringing it to the greatest pen show in the world in November, where the pizza party is super, the desert party is even better, and the pen crowd is the best. | |
| Parkers FS | |
| 9/29/2000: Steve | |
| A unique opportunity for the Parker collector! A set of seven "tester pens" for the trade. International size black Parker Duofolds, in mint condition, each with a different nib size, they say what the nib size is on the barrel. These are the early nineties model with flat tops. I am asking $250 for each pen if you want less than the set. $1200 for the entire set, which is about $171 per pen. These would look great in a display case for Parkers! Email me for specifics on nib sizes. I am looking for a Namiki Nightline FP and would consider a trade. | |
| Pen Shops in Toronto | |
| 9/28/2000: Raymond Wong | |
| Can anyone tell me the names of pen shops in Toronto, Canada? I live in a city where pen shops do not exist and as a pen enthusiast, this is a great misfortune. I will be travelling to Toronto in the near future so such information would be very helpful. If they open Sundays, it would even be better. Thanks in advance. | |

| Penlovers Board | |
| 9/28/2000: Dean Tweeddale | |
| Just wanted to follow up on the posts about the board. I usually edit the board if necessary several times throughout the day and evening. I try to edit messages as little as necessary, keeping in mind that this is entirely a judgment call on my part. Sometime though, I have other obligations (like work, family, etc.) that may keep me from getting to the board as quick as Id like to. The posts that Mark F. mentioned were defiantly post that should be removed from the board, no disagreement there. However I was on a flight from Seattle to Houston to Cleveland and they were posted while I was in route. So they were edited out as soon as I saw them upon returning. Mark Fs message should also have been deleted from the board, as it had no useful information. It was derogatory in nature to myself, Penlovers, and you the folks that frequent the discussion board. My apologies to you I should have removed it. I like to think that we are all adults and can get along with each other for the betterment of our hobby. As we all know you can never please everyone, simply not possible. The board is free, public, and welcome to everybody. So if you have comments that would best be directed to me (i.e. messages that should be removed, derogatory comments, etc.) please email me at dean@apk.net and keep them off the board. Enjoy the Hobby. Dean Tweeddale | |

| On October 28th & 29th the National pen show will be held in Somerset New Jersey. It will be hosted by Berliner Pen Co. who have always done an excellent job and produce wonderful shows. Both tables and hotel rooms are about 75% soldout, so if you have interest in attending, please contact Bernie or Geoff at 800-440-pens. It's held at the Doubletree Hotel in Somerset NJ and special rates are given to exhibitors and attendees. An auction will be held on Saturday along with several seminars. Take it from one who exhibits every year, you won't be dissappointed !!! | |
| Re: don, left handed fountain pen nibs | |
| 9/28/2000: Richard | |
| Don, it's tough to *find* left-handed nibs, but it's not tough to have them made. If you're patient enough to deal with a master craftsman and his waiting list, visit John Mottishaw's http://www.nibs.com/ site and see whether John can help you. He's a genius with nibs; I've used his services several times. If you don't see the info you want, send. Good luck. | |

| San Francisco Show | |
| 9/28/2000: Dayne | |
| I was a the San Francisco Show and had a great time. I believe the sponsors did a great job organizing and arranging it, the hotel was great and San Francisco is a wonderful location. Saturday was very quiet with all the dealers sitting and looking at each other but Sunday saw a multitude show up - right at lunch time. Went to get a sandwich and when I got back, my table was surrounded. There were great buys as well and I discovered two great pens to add to my collection - a Chilton set in cherry red and a beautiful vintage Omas doric style in the oversize model. All in all I had a great time. I want to thank the organizers - great job. | |
| The Board | |
| 9/28/2000: Stephen Lam | |
| I do remember the posts mentioned by Mark F and I agree with him that ideally they should be removed asap. In reality, however, we should understand that perhaps the board operator has his own way of doing things which we should respect. Perhaps he only does that twice a day or whatever. When such post appears, I simply ignore them. As for D Ekbar's post, I think the board still offers a very good way to learn. The secret of learning is asking questions. If you have any question about anything about the hobby, just post it and I'm pretty sure some board users will respond. My suggestion is however that you should acquire as many books on pens as possible and read up on the subjects yourself. Pen books are readily available on the internet. Armed with a basic knowledge of the hobby, you will then be able to interpret advice you get through this board wisely. | |

| 9/28/2000: Lynn Brant | |
| I got an email from this mark f guy, who I don't know at all. I don't know what he was talking about, it was removed before I looked. Why he would email me of all people I don't know but I told him I have no opinion at all and that I feel very strongly about that :). I also told him that if he thinks its easy to run a board like this he should give it a try. I would also suggest to all of you that you need him simply because he cares. He may be crabby but he cares and the numbers of people who care about the vintage pen hobby are fast dwindling. So whatever. I'm here only to follow up on the message I posted a couple weeks ago about pens I'll be selling. I still plan to get those up on a web page when I get a round tuit and will then email all who responded with the link. Also, I have a lovely slant front Eversharp/Wahl Pen countertop display case (48 pens) that I would really rather not pack up and ship. So if anyone is coming to Columbus who might be interested let me know in advance. Otherwise it will be on display and for sale there. | |

| "This board" and Mark | |
| 9/28/2000: D.Eker | |
| I check this board everyday. Living on the other side of the World (Turkey), finding good books or sources on pens is impossible. This and other discussion boards are almost the only source of information for me. I am also interested in astronomy and most of the time I can not find the monthly magazines. Thus, I have to turn to related sites to learn about my hobby. There is no other choice for me. Because of this reason I want maximum information (if possible)from discussion boards. There are a couple of electronic magazines on pens but the same articles remain for months after months. Some sites never revise the material. So I am stuck with the board (both because it is very informative and because of lack of other resources in my case). Maybe others like the board too but they like me make suggestions to improve it. Maybe the language in expressing the suggestions should be chosen carefully. I will stay and voice my thoughts because I believe in them and I should work to make the others rethink and preferably change their minds. In conclusion I think both sides should coose their words carefully and not reject or put down other persons who have different views. Do not say "if you do not like go some place else" or make him/her feel like that as if the person is from another species. In democracy we should respect each other as worthy human beings with worthy viewpoints. Lets learn from each other. Lets tolerate different views. In the end we are here because we like the same thing, the fountain pen. By the way, I do not know Mark in person. | |

| Hey Mark, if you don't like what you see , change the channel. There are plenty of very knowledgeable dealers and collectors that are active on this board such as gary lehrer, lee chait, andy gnoza, lee wong, ken jones, larry shelton and myself. We monitor the board daily and try to keep it interesting, as does the new owner Dean Tweeddale. Since this is a free board and you're not paying a subscription to participate- GO SOMEWHERE ELSE !! Didn't your mother ever teach you that if you can't say something nice, keep your mouth shut ! | |
| Mont Blanc | |
| 9/27/2000: joy | |
| John Be careful buying Mont Blanc on the internet. If you do not buy from an authorized dealer MB will not honor any warranties. Having a site on the internet, I know that MB does not permit their merchandise to be sold and particularly not at discount prices. I went to penzone but did not see where they said they were an authorized dealer. Their prices are great, but if not authorized no warranty. Call them and check with them first before buying. Joy | |

| In the old days, before the new owner and the addition of all the advertising, crap like what was finally removed would have been gone in an hour or two. That's part of what made it great. I guess that's why hardly any of the knowledgeable pen collectors who used to hang out here even bother anymore. | |

| Waterman Fountain pen | |
| 9/26/2000: Elizabeth | |
| I inherited from my mother a Waterman Pen set which included one ball point and one fountain pen. I don't know the model or year and was curious if anyone could help me identify them. They are slim, dark red with gold accents. The fountain pen is capped, with a gold clip having the "W" insignia and a gold band at the bottom of the clip with the words "Waterman Made in France" inscribed thereon. The ball point twists to expose the point and also has a pocket clip. | |
| Lapis Blue Senior Duofold Set FS@A | |
| 9/26/2000: Northwest Pen Works | |
| Parker Duofold Senior Set in Lapis Blue, Flat Top Single Band Cap, Made in 1927 or '28. The condition of this pen is very exceptional! The color is much, much better than the average lapis blue Parker. The color of the pencil is absolutely perfect. The color in the pen cap is very good, I'd call it 90% and the barrel color is much better than average I would call it 80%. The pen has a 14 karat medium nib, the imprint is clear, and the milling on cap end and blind end cap is crisp. There is a small area of brassing on the ball of the clip on both the pen and pencil, and a slight amount on the ring at the top of the crown on the pencil. There are no dings, dents, bit marks or scratches on this set. The pen and pencil has been fully professionally restored, inside and out, by us at Northwest Pen Works. Please e-mail me if you have any questions. This is an opportunity for you to own one of the most highly sought after pen sets on the planet. Michael McNeil | |

| Parker 51 resources | |
| 9/25/2000: John Cutcher | |
| I've never paid much attention to 51s, and now find myself with one that I'd like to know more about. It is clearly from the 1942-48 generation, since it has the plastic Speedline Vacumatic filler; the barrel has a "7" imprint, meaning 1947 production, I believe. Gold filled cap with jewels on barrel and cap; blue diamond on clip. Anyway, what I'm curious about is primarily the barrel color. It is what I would call butterscotch. I notice on Boris Rice's 51 page, seven colors are listed for the 51 of this era, including mustard and tan (buckskin beige) but no site I can find has actual pictures for comparison. I know I've seen this in some pen reference books (one of Fischler and Schneider's, probably) but can't find it now. No doubt this is an elementary thing to the 51 collector, but as I said, I've sort of ignored them (sorry, 51 fans!) Any help appreciated. | |

| Pen Repair | |
| 9/25/2000: Gary Lehrer | |
| Shawn: Your Parker 51 likely still has some dried up old ink restricting some of the ink flow. Try soaking the nib end standing up in an inch or so of cool water for 24 hours. If that doesn't fix the problem, the pen should be disassembled and ultrasonically cleaned. There are several pen repair people whose names come up on this board who can do this restoration for you, including myself (email for more information). | |
| What's it worth? A swallow pen | |
| 9/25/2000: Gary Lehrer | |
| Leah: The Swallow was Mabie Todd's mid-level pen. The top-of-the-line was the Swan, while the bottom-of-the-line was the Blackbird. Mabie Todd ceased production in the USA around 1938 and in England sometime during the 1950s. The Swallow combination pencilpen was manufactured from 1932-1936. I'd estimate the value of a black & pearl example, in near mint condition (especially no ambering), at about $200.00. Reduce the value for ambering and any other problems with condition which may be present. | |

| Pen shows | |
| 9/25/2000: Bill Hong | |
| I've only experience with ONE pen show (the D.C. one, for the last 4-5 years), so I'm not about to start comparing one show to another. But it wouldn't surprise me if there will continue to be a shakeout of shows, especially when, as has been the case of late, there's a succession of closely spaced ones during certain times of the year. The dealers and retailers who do these shows have a lot of investment in prep time as well as money, and they will naturally gravitate to where the shows are better run, or even "friendlier". It helps when the hotel is nice with reasonable rates, isn't located in the middle of nowhere (leaving attendees staying there with little convenient alternatives for restaurants) etc. The costs AND hassles of travelling by air are going up, with fuel prices affecting tickets, poor airline service and the like. And let's face it, many of the dealers who have to do a succession of shows will simply get tired! After all, they're human and they may have to get back and face business as usual, as well as prepare for the next show. So Len seems to be reasonable in stating that the quality of a show will go a long way toward ensuring its survival. As for how "good" a show is for a particular person, your mileage WILL vary, depending on what you're looking for, it seems that simple. To me the real fun of the DC show this year was not the getting of more pens (got plenty of those), but simply perusing the tables and talking to folks. | |

| Security Cap | |

| I am going to reiterate an earlier plea. I have an old Kriticson (Spelling?) security pen, one of those babies that had the neat check protection wheel and red ink in the cap. I have the pen, original nib and all, but I dont have the blasted cap! It is a black chased rubber model, and when I got it someone had put an Eversharp cap on it (Skyliner maybe? I am not an Eversharp person!)If anyone has bought some parts or has some parts and among them happens to be a cap for this pen, I am interested in procuring it. Thanks! | |

| I'm looking for a few caps to do repairs/replacements on some ailing pens in my collection--First, a Sheaffer Balance in Black & Pearl, FULL sized (not oversized). If it is an intact whole cap in good shape, it needs to have a White Dot. A little ambering is OK as long as it isn't "Black & Brown." But I'm willing to accept a semi-trashed example (bad clip, etc.) if the CAP BAND and LOWER LIP are in good shape--that's what's missing on my current cap, so I can do a transplant if necessary. Will even entertain a plain ol' black standard size Balance cap, if it comes to using that to make this B & P cap whole again. Thanks. Also looking for two HR caps. First, a black chased one for a Waterman 42 or 44 safety. Doesn't have to have a clip, but the pen I have has excellent color, chasing and imprints, so if you've got a homeless cap in great shape, let me know. And while I'm in a fantasy mode, does anyone have an intact taper cap for a "brown" HR Waterman 22? As you can surmise, I'm not looking for pristine color on this one. Much obliged. | |
| S. F. Pen Show | |
| 9/25/2000: Berry in Gilroy | |
| I also attended the San Francisco Pen Show this past weekend, and there were many incredible deals on pens! The Sunday crowd always gets the best deals on new pens, as the sellers have to pack up and go home. Airline International had half-off on many pens, and their prices on most others were super. Ken Jones from Bertram's had many Conway Stewarts, the shows sponsor, and prices there were great as well. The show was packed with vintage, and many saught-after pieces are just not on the market as they were 5 years ago. I found everyone to be friendly and honest, and so must have the dealers. One had Michel Perchin's collection sitting right out on the table as you walked in the door. I made some great deals, and caught up with some old friends in the pen business. AnnMarie at Ink palette, especially. Pen Shows are, and always will be, great places to find new and vintage pens. | |

| I recently received an old Parker 51 from my great aunt's estate, which has not been written with for over 40 years, after rinsing with warm water, the pen started writing but the ink does not flow smoothly, I do not want to damage the pen by trying to open it, Any suggestions? How much will the repair of such pen cost? Thanks 'Shawn | |

| Were we at the same show? There were lots of great pens and deals. I disagree with all of your comments. I am a "hobbyist" whose sells off very good and great pens at fair to fantastic prices when I tire of them. My big purchase was a $1000 pen that a dealer/collector was selling because he got a "better" one. Mine is great, and I wouldn't have paid more for an even better one. As far as the dealers, there were plenty of deals on new pens. Quality vintage pens are scarce, and the dealers have a right to make a profit. | |
| Pen Shows in 2000 | |
| 9/24/2000: Len Provisor | |
| I'm a hobbyist collector, I regularly attended Chicago, DC, Ohio and Houston recently. Yes, advertising is very critical to show success and attendance from the public and new collectors. Aggressive advertising to the media and trade can amount to $10,000 or more. Lee and Andy are right on target as to expenses for travel, hotel, and a $3.00 cup of hotel coffee. Conflicting show dates are a major problem, thus attendees and exhibitors have to make choices. No advertising, low attendees, it's going to be a "no-show" for many, no matter past accolades, one can't ride on past reputation. Success depends on getting the message out to the public for new interest. Slowly show promoters are going to get the message that their own shows, poorly planed, little or no advertising, badly timed dates, will slowly strangle themselves and the entire year's schedule of events. I suggest a co-operation among all show promoters to set solid dates, advertising commitments to guarantee their own success and survival. So far as auction sites sucking pens away from shows, I believe it's a drop in the pen bucket. Mr. Fultz once speculated in Pen World as to the number of pens manufactured over the last 100 years, the numbers of collectors world-wide today and new closet collectors...leaving something like 100 Billion pens yet unfound. Advertising does not cost....it pays. Ohio is a perfect example of doing it right. | |

| Pen Shows | |
| 9/24/2000: Andrew J. Gnoza, III | |
| One reason pen shows are not improving is the cost - both to attend and to set up. Collecting pens is what I consider a "high end " or "snob appeal" happening in todays society and most people don't want that. On the other hand there are probably 10 times as many "bottle" shows a year as pen shows and they are more appealing to the general collecting public and better attended than pen shows. I am comparing apples to oranges here and I know that... but give me a $5 table at a bottle show for a week end vs $125 table at a pen show any day of the year AND I'll have a lot of fun with these down to earth people AND probably sell more ink and bottles at the bottle show than the pen show...FACTOID. Don't get me wrong I have a lot of friends that sell and buy at pen shows and they are down to earth nice people - on the other hand I have never seen a bottle collector or attendee in a 3 piece suit, a tudedo or paying for their purchases with an American Express Platinum card... something that I see a lot of the time at pen shows. | |

| Hellow everyone. I have been away on "sabattical" for a couple of years, just now getting back into the world of pens. I simply cannot get used to the variety of new pens available out there compared to just a couple of years ago. I am most intrigued by the new Conway Stewart Pens in the Fountain Pen Hospital catalog. The nibs have a vintage look and the colors are wonderful. Has anyone had any experience with these? Are the nibs flexible like the vintage ones used to be? Thank you for any input. I apologize for taking up bandwidth if this issue has been discussed before. | |

| 9/24/2000: Stephen Lam | |
| I am attending my first US pen show, the SF show that is now underway and I would like to share my initial feelings about it. To start with, I am not a novice collector. I have been buying and selling pens for many years now. I do not find this show satisfying from a stock acquisition point of view. I bought several pens from the dealers and also a few from hobbyists. I did not get bargains from the dealers (or for that matter good pens) primarily because I don't know them well enough. I guess this is understandable and I am not complaining. I tend to shy away from the pens the hobbyists sell because generally they are duplicates which more often than not are pens they do not consider good enough for their collection. Why would I go for collectors' rejects ?? I find the show very helpful, however, as a place for me to look for parts and I have purchased some, at good prices too. I also find the show a good place to learn more about pens and indeed I did learn something new about my favorite Conklins. I think this show ( and I am not generalising because this is my first US show) is good for novice collectors who are looking for the odd Big Red or blue laminate vacumatic. They probably won't mind the prices as they will only be buying a few at a time. From the selling point of view, I think most sellers prefer to sell to this group of people. Besides being able to sell items at retail prices, they will be able to establish links with this group of buyers for future business. With that in mind, I think from a business point of view, shows should be open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays. I also think that shows should be run as businesses aiming for a profit ( for all concerned)and not just events where "collectors" meet to talk about and trade pens. I enjoy this experience. Flying from Australia to San Francisco is not cheap but I think it is well worth it. At least I know now what to expect if and when I attend my next pen show stateside. | |
| What's it worth? A swallow pen | |
| 9/24/2000: Leah | |
| I found an old pen in a sewing basked that was my mother in law's. She's died in 1980. The pen is black and pearl (yellow) and is an ink pen with a clip on the side for drawing up ink. The opposite end appears to be a pencil. It has Swallow written on it and the name or inscription of Mabie Todd May 21-18. Can anyone tell me anything about the pen, the value of it, or where I can find more information about it? Leah | |

| Lee & I have had this conversation several times and I must agree that the shows are sadly declining. The DC show was far and away the biggest and best this year, followed by LA. Chicago fell very short, due to a very poor turnout on Sunday, otherwise it was pretty good. Ohio is coming up, but Terry & Sonya always deliver the crowds, as this shows gets better each year. Sadly the other shows I attended this year fell way short. As someone who is in this as a business I must agree with Lee and others that the hobby has too many shows and too few buyers attending. In years past the shows were a great place to aquire new pens, sadly with the on line auctions this has ceased to happen as well. Anyway, I think the hobby can more than get by with 4 major shows a year. | |
| Arthur A. Waterman fountain pen | |
| 9/24/2000: Diana LaMilza | |
| I have this Arthur A. Waterman fountain pen. It has a very ornate gold top and barrell. The top has a clip with "The AA clip (and a patent number)" etched on it. The pen tip and the bottom of the barrell have etched "The Arthur A. Waterman Co., New York," and then the disclaimer "Not connected with the L.E. Waterman Co." The pen tip also has a number, hard to read, I think 193-14K. I cannot find any information on Arthur Waterman anywhere. Can anybody give me an idea of what this pen is worth? | |

| Pen Show Attendance | |
| 9/24/2000: Lee Chait | |
| I agree with Allan but you won't have to worry about Sunday attendance only in a couple or so years. I fully expect there to be 5 or so shows that survive the curent trend towards lower attendance probably due to the increased expenses of attending shows; the lack of vintage material and the increased internet activity, etc.. The survivors will be LA; DC; Columbus. One or two others may step up and advertise their shows to attract people. Chicago will be an early survivor but it fell short of my expectations this past year which was my first here. As a hobbyist it cost almost a $1000 a show if I have to fly there. That's a lot of money to spend. So far I've been able to justify it by the purchases I've made to add to my own collections and by buying and selling some some from my table. People are reevaluating their policy of trying to attend all the shows. Some have already started cutting back as they put their money and time into other areas of the business. Unless Show promoters are willing to put some money into advertising the Shows they will fall by the wayside. I much prefer the multiple public days but some of the best deals for me are made on Thursday and Friday. At a number of shows this year early arrival by dealers was down also. | |

| Pen Show Public Attendance | |
| 9/23/2000: Allan Fuld | |
| Why are most pen shows open to the public only on Sunday? I would guess that the idea of a hobby show would be to attract the public, and get people interested in what is in the show. Of all the "Hobby Shows" I know of, the pen shows are the only ones to have a general admission only on Sunday . I would think that the more people you get through the door, the better it would be for the hobby and the exhibitors. Are we a bunch of elitists? | |
| Limited? | |
| 9/23/2000: Alan | |
| Like Lee was saying - the limited editions that have no number...who is responsible for those? Who knows how many Pelikan M800 Demos in green were made? What about the Blue Ocean knock-offs with no number? The OMAS Ferrari? I guess with all told there are many, many more than we realize. | |
| Limited Editions........ | |
| 9/23/2000: Alan | |
| With the modern pens I really don't think it matters what the number is. When you consider the number of these things that are made who really cares? In most cases we're not talking about something scarce at all. I think that is evident when most modern limited edition pens which are not long, long sold out are pretty much available at 50% of the retail value at numerous auctions. The whole limited edition idea was brilliant but it appears to be slowing down and some of the pens are getting really tiresome. People get upset about this but look at what they are making limited editions of now.....a Spirit of Saint Louis pen?.....get real. | |

| I was thumbimg through the latest issue of PCA when I came across you advertisement. What a wonderful idea, your website is. I read a number of items and found the comments interesting and thought provoking. Thank you for providng a place for those of us who are, seriously interested in pens with a place to entertain ideas and solicit opinions. By the way, with respect to the comments regarding, new limited-addition pens, I can offer only that the good economy of the past few years has been supportive of innovators, designers, and manufacturers too test their ideas in the marketplace. I often tell friends that, while we all dislike the prices and the selling schemes, I think we can all recognize that when all is said and done, this period will likely be viewed in a way similar to how we currently look back on the golden period that produced those fabulous pens of the turn-of-the-century, 20s, 30s, etc. One day it will all be over (from looking at recent catelogs and observing the finanical markets, I think that time has arrived). Except for the latest OMAS, the new experiments are beginning to look unimginative. | |

| This Board | |
| 9/23/2000: Larry Shelton | |
| Seems to me this board is on track to becoming the premier pen board on the www... if it isn't already. If you follow PenLovers regularly you get the feel for a mix of questions and answers, folks looking for parts, vintage pens for sale and just general information about upcoming shows etc. I can't remember seeing so many people offering vintage pens for sale. It reminds me of the old AOL board before they regulated it to near death. I only wish more collectors would offer up their pens for sale here first instead of taking them to ebay or PenBid. With the support of collectors and dealers this board will only get better and better and better.... Dean Tweeddale should be complimented for creating an environment that serves the needs of the hobby.... | |
| Rotring Tiku ? | |
| 9/23/2000: Bruce Robinson | |
| I came across a Rotring Tiku piston-filled "Stylograph" needle-in-tube pen today. It is mottled purple in colour, and has "Tiku" on the red ring at the blind cap. It looks similar to the Rapidograph pens, except the needle housing is rounded, as described in "Da Book" for general writing stylograph pens, rather than drafing pens. 1. Does anyone know when production of the Tiku stopped, (Tiku started in 1928 according to Rotring's WWW site) and how one can date the pens. I am not sure if this one works, or if the needle is present. The shop has it labelled "pencil". Thanks I would appreciate any suggestions as to where information may be obtained, and a guide to others on the market. | |

| Who invented Limited Editions, anyway ! | |
| 9/22/2000: Len Provisor | |
| I'm sure there are more than I can remember, from before Parker's Spanish Treasure in 1965 to introduce the sterling 75, and again the Pewter Bicentennial with a piece of Independence Hall. Since then, it's endless. I have a few items that I treasure as "Limited Edition", 'tho not marked as such, or even numbered. I have a large wood dip pen, created in 1937 to Commemorate the 150th year of the U.S. Constitution, engraved on a wide white metal ferrule, noting that the wood of the pen "made from an Elm tree that stood in Constitution Square for 172 years, and used by S. Davis Wilson, then Mayor of Philadelphia, to sign the Constitutional Register" It is fitted with an Esterbrook #896 nib. Now THIS is a Limited Edition, allowing me to actually hold a piece of wood that Thomas Jefferson may have leaned against to discuss the idea of a new nation with his pals Ben, George and John. A Sengbush inkwell I have is mounted on a very old piece of wood planking, a brass plate notes it is from the deck of the USS Constitution "Old Ironsides" taken during reconstruction in 1934. THIS is a Limited Edition. As you can tell, I really like early Americana pen/ink/paper ephemera. | |
| Limited Editions | |
| 9/22/2000: Larry Shelton | |
| I think most limited edition pens as a rule are a joke. How do you make 5000, 10000 or 30000 of something and call it a Limited Edition. To me it's an insult to your intelligence. On the other hand you have someone like Namiki producing only 300 White Tigers. Now that is a Limited Edition and the current price of the White Tiger is reflective of it's scarcity. The Parker LE Snake (5000 pens) has a suggested price of $2500. Know anybody wanting to pay that price lately. If you do send them my way..... | |
| FPH Omas Bash | |
| 9/22/2000: Penstop | |
| Hi All: Just thought I would let everyone know that the FPH Omas Introduction of the new Omas pens was a huge success by anyone's standards. All of the people from Omas were there, with representations of the new pens, which are spectacular. The Doctor's Pen is just gorgeous in the rose gold and the "Arlecchino" or Harlequin is also spectacular in person. The pictures do not do them justice, especially the "Arlecchino" with its five color mix. As promised Bill Cosby was there for over three hours, kidding with customers and signing autographs and generally entertaining the crowds of people who came to the event. If anyone is in the neighborhood on Saturday, don't miss the opportunity to stop by and see the new line. It will not be time wasted for any pen enthusiast. | |

| A Large Lot for Sale? | |
| 9/22/2000: Joel | |
| Ok gang here is the deal. Disclaimers up front and a bit of the background. I have been contacted by a person who is interested in selling his "father's estate of pens". He wants to sell them in one lot, he prefers cash! He has indicated that there is no return policy. I have not seen the lot and an attempt to meet with the seller fell way short, primarily because of his excuses. In short, I do not know if these pens actually exist (I have asked for pictures) nor have I met with this person nor have I talked with him on the phone. I have his e-mail address and a list of the pens he wishes to sell. I will provide you with his address and the list if you are seriously intersted. The list consists primarily of MIB MB and Waterman Ftn Pens, roller balls and ballpoints. I repeat, I am NOT acting as his agent and cannot attest to the veracity of his statements nor the existence of the pens or if they are, in fact, not copies of the originals and if original, they may or may not be stolen. With all those warnings, if you would like to be in touch with this person, please e-mail me. Best Regards, Joel visit us at www.ink-pen.com (where I know all the pens do exist and are for sale) | |
| Numbered Limited? Editions | |
| 9/22/2000: Lee Chait | |
| As a Parker Collector I have many of their so called Limited Ediitons. Generally the numbers or lack of number doesn't mean a whole lot except for exceptional cases. If you had #1945 of the MacArthur Duofold that might have some signifigance as the last one. However there is an earlier series of MacA in a LE of 30 and I have # 1/30. How much is that worth? As far as the Parker 75 LE's that were marketed to the public for each one I have with a number I have had or still have others with no numbers. The Spanish Treasure Fleet didn't have numbers. The Memorial Fund Duofold was a LE of 10,000 but allegedly only about 3000 were made. I have #1000 of the 1995 Parker Sterling Snake and didn't pay any more for it than an yother number. Again I guess if you had #5000 or a real low number (10 or less) someone might be willing to pay a premium. Given a choice I would choose a lower number than a higher one unless it was the last of an issue. I had recently gotten 19 LE's from the original purchaser in 1976 and of the group there were none with consecutive serial numbers. Had there pen I probably would have saved a pair for myself. Was a limited edition that is unnumbered someones lunch time project at the factory or a product of the manufacturing process? Which would you rather have: A numbered pen that is out of a group of 10,000 or a pen from the same series with no number? | |
| re: numbered editions | |
| 9/22/2000: Waco Johnny D | |
| Hi Allen, I have a mess of Bexley's LEs as well as a Parker Mandarin and a MB Agatha Christie and I've never concerned myself with the serial numbers of any of them. I knew before the purchase that I wasn't going to get the first of the run or the last of the run, so by my own subjective measure of value it wasn't worth paying attention to. In every case I've bought a LE, it was only because I liked the pen. The fact that it was a LE had nothing to do with the purchase decision. This comment does NOT apply to the Bexley protos, however. I think, in our hobby, and except for Howard's stuff, "fountain pen limited edition" is somewhat of an oxymoron. I believe MB made 30K Agatha Christies in silver and another few K more in gold -- Parker made 10K Mandarins. Limited schlimited! WJD |

| re: numbered editions | |
| 9/22/2000: Bruce | |
| From my days of collecting limited edition prints, I learned that the number was meaningless. The numbering of the prints was more related to the order in which the artist signed them than the order in which they were printed. The edition was generally all printed at one time. With pens, there may be a difference in when they were made. For example, lower numbered Bexley Originals had earlier boxes, a date stamp on the barrel, single threaded caps, all of which were changed well before the series was completed. I acquired a Pelikan M800 green demo that had a high number 2???/3000 and the number card was dated 1995 which I believe was quite a bit later than the earlier one. So, a lower number may have some significance to the piece. But given two identical pieces from a manufacturing point of view, I don't care a bit about the number and would not pay more for lower. | |
| numbered editions | |
| 9/22/2000: allen gross | |
| Here's a topic for a good discussion, when it comes to buying a limited edition pen are lower numbers realyy significant ? Certainly a smaller numbered edition will help to create more of a demand, but is number 10 really more valuable than number 33 ? I think not, but my customers seem to feel otherwise. What's your opinion ? | |

| 9/21/2000: Len Provisor | |
| Really looking forward to this great show. Terry and Sonya put on a great event, making this the fastest growing show in the U.S. If you live anywhere in the Heart of America, it's an easy drive to Columbus. No parking problems, either. For me I'm looking forward to a nice drive from Chicago area, and visiting the TwinRocker Paper Co.a few miles east of I-65 on Route 18 in Brookston, IN., a wee bit north of LaFayette. If you like hand-made papers this is a must visit. Call first to be sure the store or tours are open. It's also a happy coincidence to be right on the way towards Avalon Jewelers, just 2 miles north of Indianapolis. I hear this is an oasis of pens new and vintage that can't be missed. Maybe I'll even get lucky at a few antique malls on the way. For sure I'll build up my appetite for the Ohio Pen Show Pizza Party. | |

| Just a note to remind everyone that the Pen Collectors of America will be
set up at the SF Pen Show in Oakland this weekend. For those of you who are not yet
members, hope you'll take a couple minutes away from the pens to stop by and learn more
about the PCA and the benefits we offer to pen collectors. And while, we're talking about the SF Pen Show - we still need member volunteers for the PCA table. | Grey Marconi
| 9/18/2000: Alan | |
| The pen is actually a deep, deep grey. It is like when you go into a store and buy a pair of black trousers and the label says the color is charcoal. Charcoal is considered grey - so the grey Marconi should really be called the charcoal grey Marconi. Alan | |
| San Francisco Bay Area Pen & Watch Show | |
| 9/18/2000: Saul Kitchener | |
| The San Francisco Show is only a few days away as it begins on Thursday, Sept. 21. The Oakland Marriott City Center is SOLD OUT. Don't let that stop you from attending, however. If you want a table or just want to come as a collector we have plenty of room. From all the phone calls I've received we expect a record public attendance, and last year we had over 1,000 people. We will have a number of watch dealers setting up this year as well as vintage and modern pen folks. The auction, both live(Sat. Sept.23) and silent are loaded with great pens and bags of parts. Thanks to Conway Stewart and the Pan Pacific Pen Club for their support. Hope to see you all there. | |

| Thompson Pen Co. | |
| 9/18/2000: Steve Thompson | |
| I have been collecting Moore pens for a number of years and more recently have begun to collect Thompson pens. The interest here is of course the name. what I would like to find out is more about the company. I essentially know nothing and haven't found anything in my refrence books. Thanks in advance for the help. | |
| Omas Maconi | |
| 9/18/2000: Carlos Kaplan | |
| Any know why the black Omas Marconi is called the Grey Marconi? I know only 154 pens were made. The paper that came with the pens says Grey Marconi. It was for the Russian Market. Was it a mispelling? Thanks. | |
| Tiku Fountain Pen | |
| 9/18/2000: Gary Lehrer | |
| Doug: I've sold Tiku's for $75 to $100, depending on the color and condition. Yours, with the original box and instructions, would have a bit more value. I must mention that there is a very limited market for Tiku's, in this country or elsewhere. | |
| mechanical pencil-Queen Elizabeth -Cunard White Star Liner | |
| 9/18/2000: Gary Lehrer | |
| Doug: Launched in 1938, the QE1 served during WWII as a troop ship and didn't make it's maiden passenger voyage until 1946. She became unprofitable in the 1960's and was sold with the plan to be used as a floating University. Before she was ever refitted, she burned and sunk in Hong Kong in 1972. Your pencil is probably from somewhere between the later 1940's and early 1950's. It's value is greatest to a Cunard, White Star Line, ocean liner or QE1 collector, and is probably $20 to $30. | |
| Sanford Ink Bottles | |
| 9/18/2000: Gary Lehrer | |
| Bill: You didn't say what color the bottle is. If it is clear, my estimate at value would be $25.00 to $40.00. $50.00 to $75.00 if the bottle is blue. | |
| Targa | |
| 9/18/2000: Ron | |
| Any one have a matt black targa (chrome trim) BP or pencil that they'd like to unload - CHEAP? I've got the FP that I use when I want a FP with me, but don't want to carry anything that has to be treated with care, and wouldn't mind having the rest of the set to match. | |

| We have this mechanical pencil and are unable to find out either the age or value of it. If anyone can help we would be grateful. There is a picture of the ship on the pencil. It has a black top and a pearl bottom and a gold coloured point. It says, "Ritepoint" and "St. Louis, Mo. USA" on the black cap. | |
| Sanford Ink Bottles | |
| 9/17/2000: Bill Jedlicka | |
| I recently found a Quart size bottle of "Sanford's Premium Writing Fluid". The bottle is in excellent condition as is the label. It has a metal top with a small "spigot" that comes out of that which has a plastic twist cap. The label is red, yellow and black. The label also contains promotion of other Sanford products: "Utopian Jar Library Paste" and "Sanford's New Desk Stand for Home or Office" I would like to know how I might find information on its value. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank You. Bill Jedlicka Buffalo, NY | |
| Conklin Crescent Senior | |
| 9/17/2000: Larry Shelton | |
| A Senior "Cresent" Endura is not an easy pen to come by. A red one is an even tougher bird to find. Anyone wanting to see a rare red Conklin Crescent Senior Endura check out ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewItem&item=431727702. First bid was at $9.99 no reserve. Final bid price of $1753 was a bit out of my range but then again if you're a Conklin collector and you don't have one well..... I think the term 'rare as lips on a chicken" could be appropriate..... | |

| Aussie pens and other things... | |
| 9/16/2000: scaupaug@aol.com | |
| I know several Australian collectors read Penlovers. Anyone down under
know how many "modern era" Parker models were manufactured in Australia.
Specifically - parker 75's. I have seen 6 different Australian variations of this model
pen. Sheaffer seems to have made many more models in Aust. than Parker from what I have
seen, btw (snorkels, PFM, touchdowns, tip-dips, plastic filler unit pens, etc...). ----

These are all complete with papers, "wave" boxes and outer slip box. They are new. My price including shipping is $40, insurance is $0.85 extra. Sheaffer Classic Balance Rollerballs in black...complete in boxes, new. These are really quite elegant, they list for $75, my price $37 including shipping. $0.85 more for insurance, if so desired. I have only three of these. Email me to put one on hold. I take paypal, etc. Thanks Jon R

"Da Book" has yielded no help, perhaps due to my inability to follow directions. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate hearing from you. The pen is now for sale if anyone wants it. Thanks, Alan.

| Parker Debutantes | |
| 9/14/2000: Bill Sanders | |
| Lets make pens!! I bought a huge bag of debutante caps and barrels from Fountain Pen Hospital at the Chicago Pen Show. In fact, I wrestled it away from about a dozen others in an initial frenzy. Anyway, I have all colors: black, blue pearl, green pearl, grey pearl, brown pearl, red pearl. Single bands and split bands on the caps. Caps are complete with clips and end tassies.. Clips are blue diamond and not. I probably now have the world's largest supply of these caps and barrels.Let's put them to good use. I possibly can help you complete your Parker deb. Please contact me back channel to check inventory. All parts reasonably priced to pen fanciers. Best regards, Bill Sanders | |

| 9/14/2000: Gary Lehrer | |
| Marlen523: Parker's switch from one band to two bands on the "Big Red" and other Duofolds was simply a design change they introduced in 1928. As far as I know, it had no other significance. | |

| Funny (sorta) plating story | |
| 9/13/2000: Waco Johnny D | |
| Sometimes in our shop we had to walk out to the receiving dock and haul
in these big (around 50-gallon) fiberglass tanks of chemicals. One of those chemicals'
names escapes me but I recall it was ULTRA alkaline and we used to consume lots of it.
Anyway, each container had two folding handles, and you could carry two containers, one in
each hand for balance. One day I was walking into the shop with said burden when I felt my
left hand getting warm and slippery. I looked down and it was soaked. Someone had failed
to secure the cap on that particular container and its contents were sloshing all over the
place. I brought the containers into the shop w/o further spillage, but as soon as the
foreman saw me he grabbed me and shoved my hand into one of the more-acidic tanks. Five
seconds later he pulled it out and it was okay. For the next few days skin was flaking off
my hand in little millimeter-sized pieces. If I hadn't dunked my hand into that acid tank,
it would have been skin-graft time, or so I was told. The alkaline chemicals were the most-insidious because they could "sneak up on you," never providing that burning early-warning signal that the acids would provide. They'd just feel warm and greasy, inferring nothing to the ignorant. BTW, guess what many of those plating tanks were lined with to prevent metal erosion by all this horrendous stuff? Latex rubber. Sorry for the diversion. |

| A pivotal moment in modern pen history... | |
| 9/13/2000: Len Provisor | |
| On Sept 22-23 Fountain Pen Hospital hosts Omas' 75 Anniversary bash in NY. The lucky attendees will sip Moet champagne, meet Mr. Malaguti and Bill Cosby. Steve, Terry, and Ed will be all smiles. LVMH,(Louis Vitton Moet and Hennesy, a French luxury goods conglomerate) the new owners of Omas, are entrenching a very firm foothold into the American market. Already enjoying great acceptance world-wide for their high quality pen products, a loyal customer base and continued exciting designs...this date should be remembered "as the shot heard around the world." This is the first serious offensive against Mont Blanc. Mont Blanc is about to taste some real competition from another that has some really deep pockets, an honored tradition, design sense and most importantly, is sensitive to pen collectors and respects the pen dealers. What a day it will be. Wish I was there. | |
| F/S Pen cases | |
| 9/12/2000: Mark | |

Will fit any size pen. Best offers. TIA, Mark
| Parker Service | |
| 9/12/2000: Michael | |
| Stella, the service department (as mentioned in a previous post) still exists (sorta). However, they may or may not stand by the "original owner lifetime guarantee" that the pens were sold with. If they do, the best you could hope for is that they'll send you a new pen of comparable value/quality. You see, the "repair" department is really a clearing house for sending new replacement parts. They do no (or **very** few) actual repairs. If your father wants to again use **his**own**actual**pens** you would be much better served by sending the pens to any one of the half dozen or so private, highly-regarded pen repair persons who frequent this and other boards. If you want the names of a few, just ask in a public post and you'll get lots of first hand testimonials from their satisfied customers. ~Michael~ | |

| Plating | |
| 9/12/2000: Mike | |
| Thanks for all the helpful imput. I like the suggestion of having someone else replate if it is possible. I had just seen it discussed in my repair manual, but not so much with the warnings you all provided. It just doesnt seem to be worth the effor to replate, especially since many of the pieces I do have needed replating arent high-value pens. Thanks again! | |

| gold palting | |
| 9/12/2000: Dee | |
| 100 percent agreement with Gary and Waco Johnny D on Gold Plating. I was the import manager for a jewelry manufacturing company for 4 1/2 years and believe me the plating department was the scariest place in the whole plant. The fumes from the cyandie solutions were dangereous and yes there is a distinct smell. And there are the issues and problems with ventilation, spills, and waste removal and treatment. Just about everything is classified as hazardeous materials. I would go outside and walk around the building even in the dead of winter (this was in New England) to the back entrance to avoid having to walk through the plating department. You can find jewelry plating companies in the yellow pages... under plating and under some times under jewelry findings. Dee | |
| T-1's | |
| 9/12/2000: Lee Chait | |
| I agree with Gary on his pricing. The pens are not that uncommon at the various shows. The BP pencil use the same configuration at least in the 3/70 issue. The difference is the pencil used the lead cartridge similar to a jotter refill. Thus the BP or pencil can be converted from one to another by unscrewing the cap. I have a 3 piece set still in the original packaging and all have the red jewel. I've seen them without the jewel in the BP and FP and there are four piece sets out there but hard to find. The packaging was spot glued and prone to "disintegating". There are also at least two different varieties of finish difficult to distinquish without having them side by side. | |
| regarding gold plating | |
| 9/12/2000: Waco Johnny D | |
| Gary is correct. I spent two years during my late teens in the plating
business, and let me tell you it is not for the faint-of-heart. Even the process itself is
complex and rigorous. Also there are certain minimal standards that must be met by the
items to be plated in order for them not only to "hold" the various metals but
also to survive the chemicals and heat of the various cleaning and plating tanks. In a nutshell, gold plating involved (in our shop) a degreaser, rinse, an ammonia bath, rinse, copper base plate, rinse, nickel intermediate plate, rinse, and then one or more gold plates followed by drying in a rotating sawdust bin. Previously-plated parts were acid-stripped in a tank that looked as though it had been relocated from Hell itself, after which they went to a rinse and then the ammonia. Hth, WJD |

| Pen Information | |
| 9/12/2000: Gary Lehrer | |
| Swoosie: You asked about that value of a 14K gold Waterman ring-top filigree pen (552 1/2V). I believe the value to be in the $300 area, in good condition. These are much more commonly found in gold filled rather than 14K. I don't know of a pen price guide on the web, but you can check out various individual web sites where there are catalogs of pens, such as mine at www.gopens.com or David nishimura's at www.vintagepens.com. | |
| Gold Plating | |
| 9/12/2000: Gary Lehrer | |
| Mike: Gold plating is not easy and potentially dangerous. To get a durable finish, cyanide based chemicals are required, which are extremely dangerous to use. There are other systems, but they yield a much softer and less durable finish. Preparation of the metal is critical to a good finish. For some good information, try: http://www.caswellplating.com/nsindex.htm | |
| PARKER TITANIUM | |
| 9/12/2000: Gary Lehrer | |
| Darren: I've seen T-1 ball pen/pencil sets selling at pen shows in the $550 to $600 area in real good condition. The pencil is actually rarer than the ball pen, and doesn't have the red jewel in the top so you can tell it from the ball pen when the set is in your pocket. | |
| Bent Nib | |
| 9/12/2000: Gary Lehrer | |
| Michael C: Most all bent nibs can be successfully straightened using a nib block and other appropriate metal working tools. If you send along the pen I'll see if I can fix it for you (gratis). | |

| John Hancock pen | |
| 9/11/2000: Ron | |
| I submit this to the collective wisdom here. I have a John Hancock fountain pen, that I'd like a little information on. It's BHR, with nickle trim, a red (platic?) band on one end, and what appears to be a brass cartridge. No markings on the pen itself, but the nib is marked "John Hancock Boston." A nice writing nib - I'd like to be able to use the pen, but can't get the cartridge off to fill it. I'm afraid to damage the cartridge (if that's what it is!) I've had a lot of, and repaired a lot of pens, but this is a new one to me! Has anyone encountered this pen before? How do I fill it (or can it be cleaned and filled safely?) If you want to look at a scan, email me and I will give you the URL. Thanks! Ron Zorn | |

| Waterman's - ink feed quality?? etc. | |
| 9/8/2000: Dee | |
| okay, time for me to add my two cents worth. 1. the trick that Rod Ranger outlined about the 3 drops is exactly the instructions I got from Farney's with my first Waterman purchase. And it seems to work. 2. for some reason even though the converters on Waterman's have groves at the bottom that look like you should screw them into the pen -- that's not how it works you just press them in firmly (okay I add a small twist my own quirk). 3. quality? I have a "Preface" set FP and RB and I like the laquer finish for weight and feel far more than the resins. I picked up a Serenite and was disapointed that it was so light, and with the cap on to write had a slightly off balance feel. But I do like my Phileas it is comfortable even if it is light. As far as colors...the new colors of the Phileas I gather are supposed to be that mottled mixed color. Dee | |

| Re: Phileas | |
| 9/8/2000: Richard | |
| I gues it makes little difference what the topic is, at least in the pen world, you'll find those who fall on either side of the discussion. :-) My current Phileas is my second - I sold the first and later bought another after I realized just how happy I'd been with the one that was gone. The purchaser of that pen bought another of his own, and two people we both know have bought (and are VERY happy with) Phileas. The "improper mix" of white patches that Mike mentions is actually a deliberate feature - if you look at several Phileas pens of a given color you will see that the pattern is the same on all of them, even the ballpoint. I'd never try to claim that the Phileas is in the same league with my Parker jJack Knife or my Moore Fingertip, but for the price, in today's world, I've had good luck with them and I've never known personally anyone who's had the least trouble. Variation in production, maybe? Lemons, maybe? As they say in France, "qui sait"? Ah, well... :-) | |

| Parker Duofold Cent. | |
| 9/6/2000: Lee Chait | |
| A fair price. Lowest I've paid is $110. They generally sell for $150-$200 or more. Used to be plenty out there. Some people prefer the later models with the allegedly stronger clips that have the raised instead of the smooth feathers. I saved some of 1987-88 models and use one in my office at home. I sell them for $200 at the pen shows. A decent writer. Some colors are more preferred than others. For the first year the black; marbled maroon and marbled blue were the choices. | |

| I just purchased a 1988 Parker Centennial Duofold. Can't wait to receive it. Paid 150.00 for it. I think I got a great deal. Tell me about it's performance and whether or not you think this is a good price for the pen. | |

| Ink feed problems | |
| 9/6/2000: Rod Ragner | |
| I have had pens with feed problems in the past. Several Waterman nibs would stop writing; if I should the pen or turned the converter knob, they would start writing again. Waterman Service taught me a little trick: after filling the converter, turn the knob to expel three drops of ink, then retract the knob to equalize the pressure. This worked for several of my pens (I am now in the habit of doing it every time I fill a converter), but not all. Eventually, I sent the new pens to Waterman Service and they replaced the defective nibs. I have purchased over a dozen Waterman fountain pens in as many months and many of the Waterman Service people recognize my voice when I call them to exchange the standard nib of my latest purchase for an Oblique (which are quickly becoming my favorite). So, if your pen stops and starts working periodically, try the "3 drop" trick and I hope that it works for you. | |
| Modern Pens | |
| 9/6/2000: Allan Fuld | |
| All you folks with your modern pen troubles, they don't know how to make a pen function today, that is a lost talent.Todays' pens are comparable to a glitzy car that you can't drive, but must tow around with a trailer. Any good vintage pen, in good shape, will probably write rings around one of those modern day ornate tubes they call a fountain pen. | |
| Waterman Phileas | |
| 9/6/2000: Rod Ragner | |
| I also have a Coral Red Phileas, that I bought two years ago, with which I am not pleased. The nib dries out way to quickly. Ink leaks on the inside (the flange in which one inserts the cartridge or converter appears to be not perfectly circular). Flow is good, but the gold plated nib is stiffer than solid gold nibs (it is shaped very similar to the 18kt nib of the L'Etalon) and does tend to skip once in a while. I use it very infrequently and usually only with Red ink in a converter (that I empty when done). | |
| Waterman L'Etalon | |
| 9/6/2000: Rod Ragner | |
| I have two Waterman L'Etalon fountain pens, one Burgundy and one Green (both colors have recently been discountinued). The L'Etalon is currently the most expensive lacquer on brass pen made by Waterman (the Edson is a translucent resin, the Serenite is a black precious resin, and the Liaison is either black resin or brown or orange woodgrain ebonite). I have a Fine nib in the Burgundy, which writes very nicely. I am going to exchange the Extra Fine nib in the Green for a Fine Oblique. Both pens write very nicely. They have a nice weight and size for a person with large hands. I still prefer the nib of the Patrician, Opera, and Man 100 to that of the L'Etalon, but it is currently my second favorite modern (non-Vintage) Waterman fountain pen. The matching ballpoint and mechanical pencil are far more attractive than those of other modern Waterman models (particularly the aforementioned Patrician, Opera, and Man 100). The Burgundy is available at a discounted price from Levenger until they run out. Fountain Pen Hospital had the Green, but they are now out of the fountain pen in Brugundy and Green. To me lacquer is more attractive than plastic/resin. | |
| Waterman Phileas | |
| 9/6/2000: Mike | |
| As long as we are on the subject of the Phileas, I am going to give my opinon of them. I own two, a blue and a green. I purchased these a while back, before I decided to go vintage all the way. Neither of them wrote very well; they skiped, dried up too badly, they looked ok, but when writing with them, they felt cheap, not solid like a good vintage pen. Further, being the second half of an office/furniture store manager, I have many opportunities to visit pens. My observation of the Phileas is taht the quality has gone downhill even since I bought mine. The marbled plastic on my pens is solid in color, but the newer ones I see are not solid, but have white patches where the pigment was not properly mixed! I get far better service out of the $5 Shaeffer cartridge pen my stepmom snuck into my stocking last year. My advice? Put the $30 you would spend on the Phileas toward a different pen, vintage or new. | |

| Waterman set on Roadshow | |
| 9/6/2000: David Nishimura | |
| Sorry to disappoint you, but the set on the Roadshow was horribly misvalued. There was an increasingly hostile exchange of correspondence between a number of pen collectors and the so-called "expert" who made the valuation; suffice it to say, the Roadshow does itself no favors by failing to maintain standards for accuracy. Nonetheless, its track record is a disgrace, and it is not for want of feedback -- the fraudulent Civil War sword "discovery", for example, was only finally pulled from reruns and the experts involved dismissed after Chubb, the show's sponsor, put on the pressure. Many other militaria experts had informed the Roadshow privately about the fraud previously, but were simply ignored. | |

| I was watching Antique Roadshow Monday before the game and saw a Waterman pen & pencil set in silver that was appraised for $3500-$5000. The set was unusual. I realized I have what I believe to be the same set except in gold. Both are in good condition with all original lead and eraser etc. The pen is marked on the end with 0532, Can anyone give me some insight as to the where I can find a photo of Waterman pens so that I can try to determine if my set is as valuable as the set on the Roadshow.Any feedback on this is appreciated | |
| feed problems | |
| 9/6/2000: Ron Zorn | |
| HELP!! I have a vintage Kaweco Sport set, the FP in the set has a stub nib that has problems. The pen will stop writing after a few letters, and it takes quite a bit of effort to get the pen to write again. After a few characters, it stops, again. I have cleaned the pen several times in an ultrasonic cleaner, using (but not at the same time!) a diluted solution of 409 type of cleaner or amonia. I even went so far as to remove the filler unit so that I could flush the pen. No joy - the pen will still quit writing. Short of finding a VERY fine wire to run down the channels of the feed, I do not know what else to try. I do not see an obvious way to remove the nib assembly. I've done a lot of pen repairs but this has me stumped. I've seen a number of postings about ink flow problems here on the BB - maybe someone could reply here as well as directly? Thanks! | |
| skipping Kaweco | |
| 9/6/2000: Ron Zorn | |
| HELP!! I have a vintage Kaweco Sport set, the FP has a stub nib. The set in general is nice an clean, but the pen skips. More precisely, it just won't write after the first few letters. I have cleaned the FP in an ultrasonic cleaner, using both a diluted solution of 409, and then (but not together!!) diluted amonia. Finally went so far as to remove the filler unit so that I could use a squeeze bulb to flush the nib out. The pen still quits after a few characters. Short of running a thin wire through the feed (I do not know how to remove the nib assembly from this pen) I don't know how I could get it any cleaner! Any suggestions?? I usually use MB permanant Blue/black ink - as I do in ALL of my pens. I've seen several comments on skipping fountain pens, but have never seen the reply on the BB. Maybe someone can post an answer here as well as directly to me?? | |
| Ink feed problems | |
| 9/6/2000: Gerry van den Broek | |
| I have a Shaeffer fountain pen and use a converter which i fill from a bottle of ink (also Shaeffer). Whenever i am writing a short while the pen stops feeding ink. When i tap the converter several times it starts feeding the ink again. I also observed that rotating the converter up and down once that the ink does not flow all the way down again! It 'hangs' a few millimeters above the opening of the converter. Can anyone help me solving this problem!?!?!?!? | |
| Corrected links for Pens for SALE | |
| 9/5/2000: Jon Rosenbaum | |
| So sorry, I have really screwed this up tonight. Here is the same post, but I've corrected the links. (I hope!! ) Thanks for your patience. Jon R While I've sold numerous pens and pencils on ebay, I have never offered vintage items to PenLovers first. I am convinced after reading recent threads, that this is a good idea. The following pens have all been carefully reconditioned, sacs replaced, etc. Plastic pens have been carefully polished to close to "showroom new." Postage and insurance are extra, $2.00 first class mail for the first pen, $1.00 for each additional plus insurance, which will depend total value. First email confirming intent to buy wins. I have a "no questions asked" return policy. If ya don't like it, send it back and I will refund your dough, less post + ins. I have over 175 positive feedbacks on ebay as a buyer and seller, check them out at jonlr. 1. Parker Shadow Wave subdeb size two jewel. This 4 11/16" long speedline vac is marked "1" for 1941. Sharp imprint. It has a smooth fine nib, good transparency, with minimal brassing. In fact, the only brassing is at the very sides of the arrow point (very very small amount) and a tiny amount (almost unnoticable) on the tassie. No scratches, dings, cracks or bulges. A really nice excellent plus condition pen. $85 http://members.aol.com/jonr529/pkshdwgn.jpg 2. Parker Brown Sub Deb, single jewel. This 4 3/4" long pen has amazing transparency. It looks perfectly clear with no ambering whatsoever, sharp imprint "7". Equiped with a fine nib. Tiny amount of brassing on arrow point sides, none elsewhere. No scratches, dings, cracks or bulges. This would be near mint, if not for the tiny amount of brassing on the clip. $70 http://members.aol.com/jonr529/pksubdeb.jpg 3. Parker Major Vacumatic-Azure Blue. This 5 1/4" long vac is equiped with a really smooth medium nib. The clip shows considerable wear near the blue diamond. There is a small dot missing from the blue diamond. However, there is no brassing on the cap band. Better than average transparency, but color on barrel is light. Sharp imprint marked "2". This pen also has no scratches, dings, warps, etc. But because of the clip, it is only rated good plus. This will be a great user and is priced at just $55. http://members.aol.com/jonr529/pkvacazb.jpg 4. Parker 75 Ceisle FLAT TOP Sterling Silver. This pen is excellent plus plus. No dents, dings, little wear evident. Comes complete with converter. Nib is an extra fine, but really suprisingly smooth!. Has the proper metal collar with the little "0". A nice example of a popular pen. $125. http://members.aol.com/jonr529/pk75ss.jpg 5. Parker 75 Flighter BALLPOINT. This is a very scarce pen and will make a great addition to a 75 collection. It is excellent plus, still frosty with no marks that I can see. No dents, dings, etc. Fully working. Dimpled end. $50 http://members.aol.com/jonr529/pk75bpfr.jpg | |
| Metro/Presto pen | |
| 9/5/2000: Bruce | |
| I have acquired a rather large pen (> 5.5")that appears to be made of a reddish brown hard rubber. The clip is labeled Metro and Gold Filled. It is riveted on like an early Waterman. There is a single gold band. The lever is thin like a Swan and marked Presto in script. The nib is also marked Presto 14KT 8. Although cap and barrel have different names, the material is an identical match. This looks to be a very well made pen, although it has suffered through a repair sometime in the past whereby the barrel was cut and a threaded section was used. Regardless, it is a joy to own, but I have no idea who may have made it. Anyone heard of these? Anyone have a spare barrel and section? | |

| Advertising Pens | |
| 9/4/2000: Gary Lehrer | |
| Walter: Parker Jotter advertising ball pens, especially those with "windows" with rotating messages, appear to be popular. Other than that, I don't think one brand of advertising pen is more highly sought after than another, although the higher the quality of the pen, the better. Advertising of national brands (e. Nabisco, Exxon, Sealtest) is more desireable than local products (ie. Joes Bar & Grill). Graphics along with text is more dsireable than text alone. I hope this is helpful for you. | |

| Waterman Phileas | |
| 9/2/2000: J.F. Ouellette | |
| I fully agree with Richard about this pen. I purchased one over a year ago and its become one of my favorites. It rivals many more expensive pens and even some vintage pens. In the affordable F pens, Waterman has been able to offer quality at a decent price. On the vintage side I would suggest that an old lever fill balance would be a good start. I know the nibs are sometimes firm but thats good when your coming from the ball point and roller ball crowd. | |
| Re: Waterman Pens - Kyle | |
| 9/2/2000: Richard | |
| Dee's comment on 8/31 is, I agree, a very enthusiastic endorsement; but in essence she's right. Any of the modern Waterman pens will give you good service. I can particularly recommend the Phileas, which has an MSRP of $40 or so but is always available for about $32 at places like Staples or Office Max. I have a green medium-point Phileas, and I'd say it's an excellent candidate to seduce you into the love of fountain pens. There's a picture of it on my Web site: http://www.mv.com/ipusers/binder/pens/ It's the last pen on Modern Pens, Page 1. I also have a vintage Waterman, a No. 7 ripple made in the late 1920s. (It's the first pen on Vintage Pens, Page 1, on my site.) I use it, and all my other vintage pens (not so very many, really), without worrying over repairs. I don't see much reason to have a pen I can't use. :-) The most common repair on vintage pens is replacement of the sac, and that's a relatively easy task; or, if you're leery of doing it yourself, there are many good repair people who can do it for you at relatively low cost. My suggestion to you would be to start with a modern fountain pen; and then, if you decide you like fountain pens enough to pursue them for pleasure, investigate vintage pens. | |

| Cross ink feed | |
| 9/1/2000: Len Levy | |
| I had the same problem many years ago, but only with the Cross fp cartridge refills. The ink in the cartridges seemed to be abnormally viscous, and would not flow towards the point when I took the pen out of my pocket, and turned it into the writing position. The pen wrote very well when I used the converter and filled from a bottle. I was stubborn about it because I wanted the convenience of cartridges, so I returned the pen. Today, I would continue to use the converter/bottle ink combination, because the pen wrote beautifully. Len | |

| I know this is a stretch, but is there someone out there who has a Rose Ripple cap for a Waterman's 94? I would like to replace the one I have. Thanks. | |

| Hi all...a final reminder...the third annual San Francisco Bay Area International Pen Show is slated for September 21-24 at the Oakland Marriott/Oakland Convention Center. The first two shows were a huge success by anyone's measurement, and here's a great way for you to be a part of it. We're looking for an outstanding team of volunteers who are willing to work at least one four hour shift in exchange for a free pass to the entire show (worth $60). Volunteers will primarily work at the registration table, and sufficient breaks will be provided so you can enjoy the show also. Shifts still available are Friday from 8pm-midnight, Saturday from noon-4pm, 4-8pm, and 8pm-midnight, and Sunday from noon-4pm. If you would like more information, just email me; if you would like to volunteer, please respond with full contact information and your first and second choices for shifts. Thanks in advance for your interest in the show! Scott Summerfield | |

| Cross Ink Feed | |
| 9/1/2000: Raymond Wong | |
| Hi Guys: This is a great board and I learned a lot from it already. Thanks to Johnny Waco for the URL for the MontBlanc Problem site. I think I will not buy a MontBlanc for a long while. Now, can anyone tell me if they have ink feed problems with Cross fountain pens. I have several Cross's and they all have the tendency to have the ink stop flowing in the middle of writing. I have to shake it a bit to get it flowing again. It is very annoying. Any ideas? | |
