Does anyone have a spare black vac-fill Parker 51 barrel and hood? I don't really need the blind cap or nib, but I'd buy a whole pen if necessary. Cap is unimportant. I've got a 51 desk pen whose barrel has cracked and needs replacement, so I have the taper and the nice ball nib. RETURN EMAIL - skipwilliams at pobox.com. ----Skip----

We're just about packed and ready to head east to the Ohio Pen Show this morning.
Have some special stuff put aside for Friday AM: box of fixer uppers, stack of old slotter boxes for $10, big pile of Pen Plus & PENNA magazines for $1 each and a box of Clairefontaine journals at less than half price. About 40 pens that have had their nibs ground to smooth writing italics starting at $25. Plus pens, a few inks for those who forget their bottle of ink on Friday and the all-important Simichrome that seems to be THE thing to forget to bring to the show ;-)
On both Sat and Sun mornings we will be giving away Clairefontaine to the first 50 people at our tables each morning! We'll have the ink testing table set up - you can try out the new Private Reserve colors, Shell Pink and Purple Haze along with all the new Sheaffer colors and about 50 other inks.
Frank and I are pleased to be sponsoring an Ohio Pen Show tradition, the Friday Night Pizza Party - join us for free pizza and sodas about 6 PM on Friday.
Also hope you'll stop in for the PCA's annual meeting, held for the first time in Columbus. The PCA is going to unveil their new website, have some historical displays, there will be drawings for pen paraphernalia and a wine and cheese extravaganza. The PCA Party is Friday night at 7:30.
See ya'll at the Ohio Pen Show!

| His Nibs.com update
|
| |
10/30/2002: Norman Haase |
|
Hello all!
REALLY IMPORTANT NOTE: When visiting His Nibs.com, make sure
to move your mouse pointer to His Nibs in the upper right corner of any
page, to see him decked-out in his holiday finery!
http://www.hisnibs.com
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The two newest Private Reserve inks arrived today: Shell Pink and
Purple Haze. As mentioned in the last update, the good people at Private
Reserve have informed me that these are the first of a series of
"pastel" inks, which will be lighter in composition than the more heavily
saturated regular assortment of colors.
As dealers have yet to receive updated color charts, I've taken inks to nib
(a broad Montblanc in this case), to give you an idea of the new colors.
Be aware that the color translation from my scanner to your monitor will
never be exact, but a fair representation is given by following the link below.
The inks have a definite, washed-out pastel quality which is quite intriguing.
If I had to compare these to the current line of Private Reserve colors, I'd
say that the Shell Pink is a pastel version of the Candy Apple Red, and the
Purple Haze is closest to Tanzanite.
Private Reserve ink retails at $7.60 per bottle, but I've extended the
sale price of $ 7.00 to include the two newest inks.
The full line and writing sample can be seen here:
http://www.hisnibs.com/ink.htm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Having just gotten off the phone with my sales rep at YAFA, the Monteverde
PRACTICA is still awaiting arrival, but they hope to finally have them in
their California warehouse by the end of next week, to then be shipped out
to their dealers in the days immediately following. Hopefully this latest
update from them is accurate, as I know many of you have been waiting
patiently for your pens!!!!!!
They believe that they're involved in the backlog of freight that's
still in evidence at west coast seaports, due to the recent longshoremen
lockout. To see the full line of Monteverde pens, please follow this link:

This is not something you're going to find in the same places you'd find parts for vintage pens. Your only alternatives will be to purchase a used pen to get the section/feed/nib assembly, or send the pen back to the manufacturer for repair. Since this is a relatively-cheap pen I would recommend the former course; you might be able to find a used pen for $20-25. WJD. |

1. glass top: not important, and actually quite undesirable. for one, pens could be seen by intruder and stolen; for another, light deteriorates certain material like hard rubber.
2. wooden case. leather fumes (tanning chemicals) are widely reputed to cause color changes in hard rubber, as well as tarnishing of trim on the pens. for liners, felt or velvet is preferable to suede leather.
3. no.
4. make my own pen cases out of various objects, including cardboard, wood, and metal.
5. if high quality wood, with the scope to expand in size (in case additional pens are procured), about $2 per pen slot. |

I think kudos need to go to Parker for putting the 51 remake out. I hope other pen manufacturers play this kind of marketing more often. The effect on collecting is negligible because there is only so many 51s from the forties and fifties. et's see a Sheaffer Snorkel remakeoldss a lot of ink soon.

I have two pen cases for sale. I would prefer to drop them off with possible
new owner at Ohio or Philly shows, as they are a bit fragile and would hate
to have them break en route shipping.
1) Reed and Barton (?Mahogany) 66-pen case. Glass top. High luxury case.
Bottom-most drawer for 10 or so items probably best for thinner pencils,
remainder of slots pretty hefty. Has space for ink and supply. Retail is
$250. This one with mild scuffs and couple small ink stains. This was muh
first big pen case, purchased in Rochester about 3.5 years ago. Lonely pen
case not used any more. Asking $145
2) Solid Cherry 52-pen case. Glass top. Four drawers pull out. Built by
Martin Smith of Woodbin (well known sac manufacturer) back when he was still
building pen cases. This is very elegant rich cherry wood with a quality
custom flavor. Asking $145.
I am still semi-off-line, so can answer emails when check the mail at the
nearby copy shop but currently cannot send pics. Please feel free to ask
questions.
I will deliver these to Ohio or Philly to first one who claims them, but
again would prefer not to have to ship these. If no takers, perhaps will
reconsider :-)

| PENNA Magazine abbodonza
|
| |
10/26/2002: Len Provisor |
|
I have to say that PENNA magazine, published in Italy and now available in
an English/Italian U.S. edition satisfies my pen appetite for modern/vintage
pen information like a steaming plate of Fettuccine Alfredo on a cold
Chicago Saturday night.
So what's not to like about an Italian pen magazine?
I've picked past issues up from time to time, and was riveted by not only
the variety of content, but the lavish photography and information
abbodanza. Pretty much what a "lavish" pen magazine should be, especially in
the hard core pen information department.
New pens are introduced several months before even seen or talked about in
the U.S. Vintage articles are written by regulars such as editor Fiorella
Donati, Emilio Dolcini, Giuseppi Fichera, and Leitizia Jacopini who often
attends U.S. pen shows and has written several books and many articles in
PCA, WES, and other magazines.
A tour of Milan's Bridense Library exhibiting rare books and bindings, also
paper making writen by Fiorella Donati (May-June 2002). A really interesting
article on Fulgens Stilnova, a 1946 Italian crossbreed of Parker Vacumatic
and Wahl Skylines.
I can go on and on, but I won't over commercialize my comments, this is one
magazine reserved for the serious pen reader. I really enjoy PENNA magazine and recommend taking a subscription.
PENSTOP will have current issues for review and purchase at the Ohio Pen
Show
PENSTOP is the U.S. distributor for PENNA magazine.
Six issues per year, $95./U.S. Priority Mail or $80 regular mail.

My name is Thomas O’Brien, I am with the Venlo Company. We manufacture and distributed leather pen and watch cases. Venlo is currently featured on the homepage of Penlovers this month. Anyway, I am not here to promote but rather to learn.
Shortly I will be traveling to our factory in Italy to put together a round of prototypes for our next product launch. We will be making several changes and additions to the current line. Your comments, opinions and suggestions on the pen case market would help us a great deal in this process. Below I have listed a few questions that I would encourage your feedback on:
1. In purchasing a pen case for your desktop, how important is a glass top on the case to view your collection?
2. In purchasing a pen case for your desktop, do you look for a leather case or a wooden case and why?
3. Do you have a “traditional” desk set at home or in your office? If yes, did you purchase a pen case for it separately?
4. If your collection is more than 40 pens, where and how do you store them?
5. Do you believe there is market for a pen case that holds 40 or more pens which could be placed on your desk? If yes, what would you be willing to pay for it (keeping in mind that the quality would be the very best)?
Thanks in advance for your help

The Ohio Pen Show is now about a week away. By all measures it will be the best one yet. For the first time Sonya and I will arrive at the hotel on Wednesday(my cell is 614-619-5025 and hers is 740-704-6601), so we will look for all you early birds. The show opens officially at 10am Thursday, October 31 and runs to midnight if anyone cares to stay in the trading room till then. We plan on having 40 tables available. We will have our wine and cheese welcome party at 6pm again this year for all exhibitors and weekend registrants. Exhibitors and weekend registrants get started again in the ballroom and foyer at 10 am Friday morning with about 90 tables. There will be a few reserved tables but the balance are not assigned but shared as people arrive throughout the day. We will have our annual pizza party at 6pm followed by a PCA meeting that will offer wine, cheese, fruit, etc. at 7:30. We have one of the busiest Friday trading days around so if you are not registered for the weekend you will miss a lot of the action. Feel free to sign up on Friday when you arrive. Howard Levy will be displaying a new limited edition known as the "American Artist Series". I have seen the pens and there is nothing else like it out there today, very special!! If you are looking for vintage pen catalog reproductions, Jon Rosenbaum will be returning and Peter Miller will be there with pen tray/pen case reproductions. Carolina case is coming this year with their high quality fountain pen display cases. Also, Len Provisor will be there if you are thinking about getting some blotters or ordering one of his Parker planes. The auction will be Saturday and feature 115 lots. If you are flying in, don't forget about the free shuttle from the hotel to the Marriott North. Use the courtesy phones at the bottom of the escalators in baggage. |

I really appreciate the overwhelming response I've gotten to my previous post. I guess there is a market for an all-inclusive pen store directory. If you own/operate a pen store, please email me with the details, to be included in the directory. I will also be listing the names and addresses of pen clubs. If you belong to a club which wants to be included, please email me.
Thanks again...Mary |

Talentum pens are good deals. I have 2 of them, one in B and one in M. I also have an Optima with the italic nib. Auroras are good pens, well-made, but they tend to flow a little dry -- this may or may not appeal. In any case they can be adjusted for heavier flow, as can any well-designed pen. There is no difference between the nibs of the various trim colors. Note the Aurora italic is a true italic, with sharp edges, requiring the usual vigilance in use required by all italics. WJD. |

Is anyone else as disappointed with the new P-51 as I am? I was ready to plunk my $$ down until I saw one up close. Cheap plastic construction; even the jewel isnt right. To my mind, this is a $100 pen. My advice: keep your $350 and buy a vintage 51! |

I am interested in buying an Aurora Talentum pen woth Italic nib.
1. Any feedback as to the Aurora pens in general & the Talentum in particular would be appreciated.
2. Other than look, is there any difference between the nib on the gold trim versus the chrome trim
I have tried the pen & enjoyed writing with it but that was for 2 minutes. |

Hello all!
Private Reserve has just announced the release of it's two newest colors,
Shell Pink and Purple Haze. They're so new that I haven't seen them yet,
nor do I have a color swatch to display here or on the website. I'm told by
the good people at Private Reserve that these are the first of a series of
"pastel" inks, which will be lighter in composition than the more heavily
saturated regular assortment of colors.
The Shell Pink was described to me as rose-colored, and the Purple Haze
comes with a free guitar (just kidding!). I'll be excited to see these new colors,
and my first order should ship to me by the end of this week, so please
feel free to pre-order at the sale price of $ 7.00 (which applies to all of the
Private Reserve colors). The full line can be seen here:
http://www.hisnibs.com/ink.htm

The first of the Nettuno DOLPHIN pens shipped to customers this past
week, and they've been enthusiastically received.
I won't describe the pens in any more detail here, because there's a
link on my website to a terrific review in the current issue of Stylophiles.
http://www.hisnibs.com/dolphin.htm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the HERO front, I've just re-stocked both the 329 and the 330 models
of hooded-nibbed pens, which are perennial favorites of those who are
also fans of the Parker 51 and 61.
http://www.hisnibs.com/hooded_nibs.htm
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just an update: the Monteverde PRACTICA is still awaiting arrival,
but YAFA has informed me that the pens have been shipped to them from
overseas. They believe that they're involved in the backlog of freight that's
still in evidence at west coast seaports, due to the recent longshoremen
lockout. To see the full line of Monteverde pens, please follow this link.
http://www.hisnibs.com/monteverde.htm
Also, I was informed this week that the INVINCIA is only available with
a medium nib at this time. This runs counter to the information previously
provided to dealers on Monteverde's order forms and website, which
listed a fine nib as also being available.
Don't forget to take advantage of the October Special when ordering!:

Hallo everybody.
It happens I have a gorgeous little Montblanc Safety pen for sale. It's a #1 with octagonal gold rolled and enamel blue frets overlay. The nib is the original #1 BB (double broad!) that matches with the imprint on TK. Even the silver needle inside the cap is present. The condition is near mint, as the pen shows only the slightest amount of brassing in the upper part of the clip's ball. Pics available on request. Thanks

Ended up with a Montegrappa Micra Rollerball that I don't need. As far as I can tell, it's basically like new, in box. In the dark gray/blue color, it's a neat marbled acrylic. Silver trim. It's a nice, but SMALL pen, only 4 1/4 inches long closed. Other than the size, it looks like your basic Montegrappa, silver trim, cap screws on the barrel end to post, rollerball clip, and a silver section. Nice looking pen, if you don't mind diminutive writing instruments. $100 OBO, I'll pay shipping.

I guess my previous post was lost in the server shutdown. I am in the process of compiling a directory of penstores throughout North America. I would appreciate if fellow pencollectors would send me a list of the penstores in their town, to be included in the directory. Also any comments on the desirability of such a directory would be appreciated. |

Dear Colleagues,
Most of you are aware of the talent of Bill Riepl in photographing pens. We had the pleasure of working with him on the photography of the CP6 preproduction run pens for an article on Stylophiles and thereafter, the photography of the actual production run pens for the CP6 brochure.
We thought you might like to see a range of the CP6 preproduction images, many of which have not been published.

Well folks this is the second time this year that the Bulletin Board has wacked out for no detectable reason. Right now I don't know if it is a server issue or software script issue. I will be checking it out and taking whatever measures it takes to get it back to working smoothly. In the mean time it should be functioning again and you can have at it. Dean |
