| Chicago Pen Club meeting | |
| 10/31/2001: Len Provisor | |
| Reminder : The next Chicago Pen Club meeting will be Nov. 19, Saturday 2pm at Borders bookstore in Deerfield, IL Located on the SE corner of Lake-Cook and Waukegan Roads. The veyr first meeting was held Oct 14, and nine of us appeared in competition with a great Bear's home game. Sandy Andina showed off her newest pens, and was surprised to learn that she was purchased for $75. at the NYC Pen Show auction. Sandy donated her musical talents for the winning bidder's wedding, Bar Mitzva or event of their choice. BTW, Sandy is the Chicago Pen Show Blues Bus Mom...get her new CD "Ghosts and Angels". Pentrace Snailee Herb Shulz brought some of his outstanding Pelikans, Roger Wooten drove all the way from Rockford, and Dan Zazove added some valuable insight into the incredible "51" collection that was brought by Ernesto Soler, who recently moved here from NJ. He must have heard there is good pen hunting in the IL area, and is already on a first namae basis with every antique dealer. Also attending was Mark Grimmenga, Rob Schueneman and Ken Smoot.Ken won't make the Ohio Show because he's racing sport cars in Baja Mexico somewhere. Ken, pack your meds. your Lamy Safari and don't drink the water. He's nuts. Guess what, next meeting at Borders we get 20% discount on books. Lok forward to see everyone. I'm packin' for Ohio and hitting the road early to do some 'tiquing on the way. Show report later. | |

| 10/31/2001: Waco Johnny D | |
| Go to their Web site and get their number and call them. Make sure you're
actually getting a stub and not an italic, if the former is actually what you want.
Sheaffer has a bad habit of calling their italics stubs; at least such is the case on the
Balance II series. WJD |

| Ohio Pen Show, Nov. 1-4 | |
| 10/25/2001: Terry Mawhorter | |
| If you are wondering whether or not a certain dealer or collector will be attending the show, please email me and we will let you know. Many who attend a pen show enjoy visiting with pen makers. We will have several present. First and foremost of course would be Howard Levy from Bexley Pen. He generally displays prototypes and archive pieces. Maybe we can convince him to make that pen/pencil combo! Also, Robert Rosenberg from the Conklin Pen Company will be at the show to talk with you about their products. L. Michael Fultz will also attend and be able to discuss his penline. Many of you may know Chris Thompson who is making "Duofolds" from new plastic but outfitted with some vintage parts. There will be others. Please email if you are not able to get the $87. pen show rate at the hotel. We are looking foward to a good show. Hope you can take advantage of all the hard work we are putting forth on your behalf to assemble a great group of pen lovers. | |
| Looking for a Parker 15 | |
| 10/25/2001: Shane | |
| Hey, everyone. I posted a message on 10/23/01 looking for a certain Parker pen. Well, I've found out that the model I'm looking for is a BP, Flighter, cap actuated, Parker 15. I spoke with Parker-UK and found out that particular model has been discontinued. But I also found a London company that may have one, but will only sell in large (wholesale) quantities. Can any of you tell me where I can find this Parker 15? | |

| NOS Conway Stewart hoard and more | |
| 10/24/2001: www.vintagepens.com (David Nishimura) | |
| We have just posted a small hoard of new old stock Conway Stewart fountain pens (and a few pencils) from the 1950s. Most are colorful casein, most have their original price bands, all have those wonderful 14K Conway Stewart nibs, and all have been resacked and are ready to write. Prices vary, but are in general less than half of the new Conway Stewart company's retro products! We have also begun to post some other items from our latest buying trip, including a scarce button-filling hard rubber Esterbrook Relief, with oblique 14K gold nib; and one of the finest Montblanc 644 pens we have ever handled, in green stripes and with a finely patterned gold filled cap. | |
| Glen Bowen Letter | |
| 10/24/2001: Allen Gross | |
| I just received an email from Mr. Bowen, stating that he has recinded his previous policy of no internet advertising. I'm sure this wasn't an easy decision to make and I am personally grateful. Pen World is very important to all of us that collect or deal in new pens and since Mr. Bowen has chosen to continue to allow us to advertise I will continue to support the magazine 100%. I again wish to thank everyone who wrote to Pen World on behalf of the internet dealers and trust we can all once again work together for the common good of the hobby. Thanks again Glen, Allen Gross / Pens Plus | |

| Just got a form letter e-mail from Glen Bowen announcing the recission of the advertising policy and with a very long explanation of why he tried to do it. I assume a lot of you have seen it by now, but if you haven't I'll copy and paste it in for you. | |
| german school pens | |
| 10/24/2001: Lisa | |
| I'm interested in getting several of the inexpensive "school pens" that German manufacturers usually make--Pelikan, Schneider, etc. Most I find come with medium nibs, but I'd prefer fine (or x-fine) if those are available. If anyone has these available, (medium or fine, and the sillier the colors, the better) please drop me a line. I'm also interested, if anyone can acquire these, in the new Pelikan needle point pens, which seem to be some sort of liquid rollerball office-type pen. Thanks. | |

| 10/23/2001: Chuck Swisher | |
| Fred Martin wrote: Speaking of combos, I have wished for some time that one of the current major pen companies would make a combo fountain pen and pencil. I for one use both of these regularly and would love to carry only one instrument. With all of the varieties that pen companies have now, surely someone can make one model of combo like this. If you want a large modern Combo, you might be interested in the Conway Stewart Fountain Pen/Ball Point Combo. It is one of Conway Stewarts new Limited Editions and is available in several colors. To see these pens, please visit our web site for Swisher Pens at www.swisherpens.com. Hope this helps. | |

| FS: Platinum music set, Namiki maki-e | |
| 10/23/2001: Nick | |
| I didn't get any interest in these pens the 1st time I posted this message, so I'll try again @ lower prices: 1) Green celluloid Platinum music nib set. Pen has #3776 14k music nib. I bought this set in July, 2000 from Douglas Vicary. He said he'd filled the pen once, & I've filled it twice. Pen shows no sign of use w/1 exception: I filled it w/Herbin myosotis blue ink, & a little bit seems to have gotten beneath the celluloid at the top of the section, giving it a slightly dark blueish tinge. Don't let that scare you off, though; this is still a pretty pen w/a great nib. Pencil is mint, unused (& presumably works). Comes w/box & papers. I paid $350, would like $225. 2) Namiki Traditions series maki-e pen: Mt. Fuji w/Dragon, 14k med. nib. Filled once, otherwise perfect. I probably have box & papers (such as they are). Paid $250, would like $200. Thanks for looking, & if those prices seem unreasonable, make an offer. Nick Dobson | |
| Parker Pens | |
| 10/23/2001: Shane | |
| I'm very new to the world of pen collecting. Nonetheless, I'm searching for a Parker model that I purchased in Brazil and misplaced. I remember it said it was made in the U.K. I've contacted Parker Pen and, from the description I gave them, they said the pen was most likely a Parker 25, 45, or 75. The pen is a ball point and is all stainless steel. It's cap actuated. The clip is either chrome or stainless steel as well (no gold at all). It resembles a pen found at www.pendemonium.com/images/pens/frenchparker.jpg except the pen I'm looking for is a ball point instead of the fountain pen that is shown in the picture. Can anyone give me any leads as to where I might find one? | |

| Just a report that we came through Heathrow, Chicago, and Tucson airports with pens on person and in carry on luggage with no questions asked. I had been curious how a Murex might be viewed since it could make an awesome dart or weapon....but was glad not to have trouble about it or a Senior which was also aboard. Travel was not difficult nor were airports as busy as in recent past. | |

| Tiffany Diplomat Pen | |
| 10/22/2001: Lindsay Smith | |
| I recently acquired a Tiffany Diplomat fountain pen and would like to get some information about it. How old it is, approx. value etc. It has a case that looks like a cherry burl wood grain, a gold band around the base of the cap engraved "Tiffany & Co" and in small leters "Diplomat", the clip is almost rectangular and is connected to the cap with a gold ring surrounding a dark brown button at the top, the nib is marked "Diplomat" 18K M, and the bottom of the case is rounded. I assume the pen was made for Tiffany by someone else, but whom? I have searched on the web and can't find any references. Thanks, Lindsay Smith quodlibets@hotmail.com | |

| Ohio Pen Show AKA Columbus Pen Show | |
| 10/22/2001: Terry Mawhorter | |
| I always like to point out that our show is referred to by several names: The Ohio Show, The Columbus Show, others I suppose. Exhibitors please note, we will have a vender present who can rent you a showcase for $15. for the weekend. Please email for details. Collectors may wonder are we a vintage show or a new pen show? The answer of course is both. Percentage wise it splits 15% new/85% vintage. Previously I mentioned some of our vintage exhibitors. Others include Jim Nahrwold, David Nishimura, the Zuckers, Tom Heath, Warren Granek, Dan Reppert(Mr. Sheaffer), Lisa Hanes(Ms. Esterbrook), the Kaplans, the Stillwells, Paul Sameth(Desk Sets), Jon Rosenbaum(Repro Catalogs), Berliner Pen, Howard Edelstein, Boris Rice, Rick Horne, Mike Conway, Mike Hansen, Dick Johnson(Mr. Parts), Ule Kruner and the Barstons. There will be others! As for new pens, the Zuckers carry Krone and the Kaplans carry Sheaffer++ Those specializing in new include Total Office Products(go-pens.com)Mont Blanc+++, Bertram's with Conway Stewart++, Bill Weakley with Parker++, Richard Shelby, Chris Thompson with his "Parker Duofolds", and Allen Gross, Pens Plus with Michel Perchin. Allen will be introducing at our show a new, exclusive limited edition fountain pen. There will be only 20 pieces in a mono edition, meaning each pen will be the same but with slight and suttle varitions. Each will be artist signed. I have seen it and it is very, very unusual!! | |
| PCA 2001 Pen | |
| 10/22/2001: Sam Fiorella | |
| Pen Collectors of America 2001 Limited Edition Pen The PCA 2001 Pen was designed to help celebrate the PCA's tenth anniversary. All proceeds from the sales of this pen go directly back into the PCA to fund ongoing projects and to help offset costs of publishing the PENnant, the PCA's award winning journal which is sent to members three times annually. The PCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to collecting & preserving vintage fountain pens throughout the world. Our membership is 1800 strong. The PCA, whose members primarily collect vintage pens, wanted to offer a pen that would be of similar design to a vintage pen and still have the convenience of today's modern pens. Thus, the taper cap design reminiscent of eyedropper filling pens from the early 1900s was chosen. As far as we know, there is no modern pen being made today that is of similar design. If you have not, we hope you'll take a look at the PCA 2001 Pen manufactured for us by the Bexley Pen Company. Excellent photos taken by member, Bill Riepl can be seen at www.PenLovers.net in the Stylophiles online section. The Pen Collectors of America 2001 Pen is limited to 188 pieces, each individually numbered. The pen is made of a brilliant red and black hard rubber and designed to be reminiscent of a turn of the century eyedropper pen. And indeed, the PCA pen can be used with the eyedropper included with it or filled by cartridge or convertor. Fitted with a solid 18KT two tone nib with a soft and responsive point - 4 nib sizes are available: fine, medium, broad and broad stub. Each pen comes with eyedropper, convertor and is housed in a custom box designed especially for the PCA. The pen is warranted by the Bexley Pen Company. The PCA 2001 pen is $325, S&H via priority insured mail in the US is $10. We have received a partial shipment of the pens and shipping has begun. All pens are expected to be completed by the end of October. Feel free to contact either myself or Dan Reppert (email: wasp1908@interl.net) for further information or to pre-reserve your pen. All orders should be accomapnied by check or money order in US dollars sent to: Pen Collectors of America Thanks for your support of the Pen Collectors of America - Sam Fiorella |

| Very interesting Chilton Pen | |
| 10/22/2001: John | |
| I need some insights to this Chilton pen that I just bought yesterday. I know that this company has heen shut down long time ago, but it's pen legacy still continues. Up till now I don't own any chilton pens (just not many to find in Canada). I guess was lucky this time. One of the pen is Black hard rubber but covered with looks like crocodile skin. the cap has 3 gold filled rings towards the top and a single ring towards the opening of the cap. The length of the pen is 5". Much appreciative is someone can shed some info about this pen. e.g. rarity, production dates, and etc... Thanks. | |

| combos | |
| 10/22/2001: Fred Martin | |
| Speaking of combos, I have wished for some time that one of the current major pen companies would make a combo fountain pen and pencil. I for one use both of these regularly and would love to carry only one instrument. With all of the varieties that pen companies have now, surely someone can make one model of combo like this. | |
| The Dodo and PWI advertising policy | |
| 10/22/2001: DovR | |
| As an overseas collector and occasional PWI purchaser and reader, I must say that I was quite surprised to read the multifarious and unanimously negative thread about Glen Bowen's Pen World internet advertising ban. Not by the thread, but PWI's strange advertising ban. Fear of unknown competition. Mom and pop internet operations with less overheads. Instead of moving with the times and joining the bandwagon, it is a clear sign of technophobia and a panic knee jerk response to IT and ecommerce competitition. I encountered it when I was appointed director of the dying Israel-South Africa chamber of commerce in order to resuscitate the dying organization which had become an old boys club. All the old fogies who had been on the executive for donkey's years refused to accept notifications and updates by email claiming it was not as reliable as the mail and telephone. ^Thus I emailed, had to send envelopes and afterwards phone to make sure they had received. Gad, what a business. My successor tells me he still has to do the phone rounds but that today they are all resigned to the fact that email is the way of communication. I had another hell of a row with them when they scrapped the website as they considered it not current nor dignified enough. People who are entrenched in their ways have difficulty meeting the present and future. It's unsettling. This is probably not the case with PWI. More likely trying to stem the online competition which is pretty near impossible in this wired day and age. Actually Bowen and his book was my first ebay purchase. Since then many dogs and I have advanced to the more reputable online folks, including acquiring some good friends along the way. PWI cannot be like the ostrich who keeps it's head buried, otherwise it too will go the way of the dinosaur and dodo. I imagine that the editors and owners of PWI have been getting all the correspondence and non renewals. This should speak to them. However, if as suspected, MB is a secret and major shareholder, it will continue, but without the zest and dynamism of the net. It will be reduced to a glossy and self touted dealer and lounge table mag. More the pity. You cannot stop the wheel or technological progress. My 2c for what it's worth. | |

| 10/22/2001: betty | |
| To pen friend Glenn still don't get throught to you with the e-mail address you gave me. I doubt that you have a converter small like three and seven sixteenth inches long..I paid $150.00 in 1992 for my Waterman Lady Diamond D fountain pen and the the company stopped making converters for it two yrs. ago.I wish we would have a Fountain Pen show out here in Phoenix. Has there ever been one here? Does anyone on the bulletin have the converter that I need.? Just call me desperate in Phoenix. | |
| combos | |
| 10/21/2001: einv | |
| see the stylophiles articles on combo pens. combos are common, cheap, and generally of poor quality. but you might just find an occassional well made conklin. enjoy your pen! it sure causes a stir amongst my friends, who think a FP is strange as it were. . . a combo weirds them out positively. as collectors' items though, they are not worth much, unless you collect combos through the ages and nothing else!! | |

| Ohio ! Cool caps and Parker planes | |
| 10/20/2001: Len Provisor | |
| Twelve days and I'm ready to jump in my trusty Volvo and head SE to Columbus. If you can make this pen show, it is worth the trip. Air fares are a bargain everywhere, and it's an easy drive from almost anywhere in the Midwest. Terry and Sonya really make this a special show with lots of state-wide advertising to be sure the public come in droves. Starting Thurs. there is plenty of time for vintage dealers and collectors to twist arms, coerce and step on toes to find a real bargain, parts or ephemera. I especially like the "feeding frenzy" when someone walks in with lots of big boxes. One friend last year found a "red thread 51" for $60. Maybe Terry/Sonya must think the best way to a pen collectors heart is thru their stomach, the pizza and desert party should not be considered unfair business practices, just the same, come and eat! Maryann and Steve Zucker are bringing some of the very cool Krone caps from the NYC Pen Show, they are only $15.99 and also available from their website penstoponline.com/html/hats/html I sent one to a friend in Japan, who went to a local pen clinic in Tokyo. Caps in Japan are almost a religion, and this one ROCKS! I still have some of the Parker "51" Beechcraft airplanes that are numbered, I will bring one for display also along with my Parker airplane photo archives. So folks, if you are driving in, start early because I think every vintage pen at antique malls along the way are about to be sucked up. You may hear the old story, "Oh yeah, Sumgai was just here and bought all those old ones with the funny crescent thing on the side, and that giant one from Parker, all for a hundred bucks!". | |

Any advice on an exceptional qualityhevier weight, large size FP to consider? Many thanks.

| HR vs plastic | |
| 10/18/2001: einv | |
| dunno about that theory. i have HR feeds from parts pens sitting outside for ages, and they do not show the kind of discoloration that my hard rubber pens do although i keep them in a dark (though not airtight) box, and write with them only in artificial light. i guess i shall lay out some HR feeds in the bright texas sun and see what happens in the extreme case. | |

| Ebay German advantage | |
| 10/18/2001: Dr.Bhandari | |
| There is a real imbalance of fairness against ebay as used by the rest of the world & Germany. If a seller in Germany wants to bid up his/her own item with another german ebay i.d. there is no way I can see if the i.d has a history of bidding up the sellers items, which I can see here in the US, due to the unique german privacy laws which Ebay has allowed them to get away with. I think to show fairness Ebay should suspend the ability of any german registered ebayer to search the activity of any non-german ebay user. | |

| Jim - aqua, which I suspect it the peacock blue color (bright turquoise color), sits on the list of "harder to find" Snorkel colors. Just don't see lots of them ... along with pink, tangerine, fiesta red, periwinkel and a couple others that don't come to mind at the moment! Sam | |
| Wanted: Sheaffer Snorkel Set - Clipper and Sentinel TM | |
| 10/17/2001: Jim Mamoulides | |
| I've been spending time collecting pen ads and I have a really really big interest in getting a few Sheaffer TM Snorkels. What I would particularly like is a complete pen, pencil and ballpoint Sentinel or Clipper set in aqua. Grey would be my second choice. If someone had a complete set of one and the pen of the other, that would be nice. Complete with the box would be nice, but not necessary. I really do want the ballpoint. I am looking for working / restored pens and in excellent to near mint condition. I do not have an interest in paying a premium for mint, with stickers, etc. I use my pens, so these would wind up in the rotation. I may consider a more user grade, provided they aren't beat up. I have not had good luck finding these, especially aqua, which surprises me a bit. Please reply back channel. Cheers, Jim Mamoulides | |

| HR versus plastic | |
| 10/17/2001: David Nishimura | |
| The reason why hard rubber feeds do not fade when dipped in water is because feeds are seldom exposed to bright light for any significant length of time. While HR will often discolor on exposure to water, this is generally only after its surface structure has already been broken down by exposure to light. This and many other things are explained in our website's FAQ pages: www.vintagepens.com/FAQ.htm | |

| HR versus plastic | |
| 10/16/2001: einv | |
| i know the feeling, i have a ringtop AA waterman that is pitch black, and which was dunked by me in the pre alcohol lamp days in water, in order to loosen the section. the darn section would not budge, but then neither did the pen lose its perfect black. those AA watermen folks knew some HR magic, because the pen, being pre 1920 (i think they went bankrupt during that year, half a decade before the first plastic pen) has to be hard rubber and yet, sun or soak did nothing to remove its mint color. after alcohol lamp became a part of my repair toolkit, i was able to open it up and resac it, etc. a HR pen can take a lot of heat without distortion. mild heat gives off a rubber smell. sometimes rubbing vigorously will do. friction produces the same smell. also, it has a certain warmth and density (by tapping with fingernail) that makes it eventually easy to distinguish from plastic, radite, celluloid, acrylic, bakelite, etc. soaking most HR pens leads unfortunately to irreversible and instantaneous oxidation. although how this is spared the black HR feeds of most vintage pens is a mystery that i have not seen resolved by pen pundits anywhere! | |

| On September eleventh, two thousand and one Our daily comfort and security was gone; New York City, the Jewel of the world Was violated by an enemy faceless and cold. Arriving from a distant, foreign place, This cowardly monster desecrated our City's lovely face. Our mighty Towers,so strong, so tall, Started to shatter, crumble and fall. The City's fearless, finest and brave Ran tovard the Towers hoping to save... Sadly, however, many the finest, many the brave Helping others their lives they gave. The Statue of Liberty, guarding our gates Watched in horror the citizen's fates. Holding her torch high toward the sky, The lady of freedom starred to cry.- | |

| Sheaffer Targa Clip Tightening | |
| 10/16/2001: Bruce Pasarow | |
| I have a Sheaffer Targa fountain pen with a loose pocket clip. Inside of the cap is a screw that appears to hold the tassie and clip in place. However, there is also a clear plastic inner cap or liner which allows me to see the screw, but not reach it with a Phillips screwdriver. How can I get access to the screw, and will reaching it help me to remove and tighten the clip? Is there a way to remove the plactic inner cap for access, or is it necessary to perform "surgery"? Thank you for your help, Bruce | |

| PWI | |
| 10/16/2001: jeff peirce | |
| Ron makes some great points. We do not need PWI to enjoy pens. We do not need the permission of Glen Bowen to buy a pen off the internet. We can also avoid a Montblanc boutique, and still get pens--usually, of much higher quality. Oddly, I would like to have PWI survive. It is fun to have a pen magazine around, and fun to get it. I still look forward to the " new pen "issue. Its fun to see what is coming out. Lately, PWI has lost its interest. The worship of celebrities, the reprinting of old articles, and the bizarre influence of certain pen companies has hurt the magazine. One wonders who runs it. It is surely not Mr. Bowen. I wish he could turn it around, and get his magazine back from the hijackers. He could even make it interesting again. | |
| Pen World | |
| 10/16/2001: Ron | |
| Pen World's decision not to allow internet advertising simply reinforces my decision not to renew my subscription a while back. My interest in the magazine began to fall with the "celebrity" interviews, with people who (maybe) owned a fountain pen. Was this just a ploy to get to interview someone famous? Then I encountered a destinct LACK of response to a letter complaining about an issue that had a bad binding. I mean really bad! Since I save my copies, I wanted a replacement. I wrote to them and asked for another copy, even offering to send the bad one back to them. NO response. Well I figured, I could get the same magazine, at the same price, some times BEFORE it would arrive in the mail, AND have the option of inspecting the copy for condition and content, so why subscribe? Even their offer of "Penspeak" hasn't moved me. NOW they want to try to control the sources for my pens? Idiots! I don't NEED their magazine to shop for pens! A quick internet search, and a lot of options pop up! We'll find pen information in places other than Pen World. We did before they existed. I've gotta wonder how much Glen Bowen owes to folks like Montblanc? | |
| PWI | |
| 10/16/2001: James Goodwin | |
| Bethehem Steel just filed for bankruptcy. Polaroid is going to liquidate. Lechners is closing 315 stores that sell kitchen stuffs. Now I am wondering who among the Pen companies will not survive this economic tailspin. As one of our posters said that fewer pen manufacturers are advertising in PWI, this is not a good sign. Parker pen lost its dominance because it chose not to advertise its products in the 1980's when other manufacturers such as Nike advertise all over the place without regard to cost. People do like to have a good pen clipped to their shirts and do enjoy writing like they make a good cup of latte in the morning which is one of life's pleasurers. Lets hope that PWI sees the coffee and changes its editorial policy against internet retailers and also that the pen companies keep the faith by investing in research and development of new products and generously advertise in media. | |
| Pen World is itself an e-commerce site | |
| 10/15/2001: Tim | |
| Pen World sells PW merchindise over its own internet site as well as back issues of its magazine. I guess purchusing such items through their site would not be an acceptable "luxury experience". Over the past few years I have noticed that fewer and fewer Manufactures and very few retailers advertisng in this publication. Their revenue is from a small select group of advertisers who in return for advertising in each monthly catalog, receive editorial coverage. Mr. Bowen "Wake up and smell the coffee". Your readers have had enough. | |

| It looks like I can save my money for buying Pen World International from now on. I agree with all the posts against Pen World's ban on ad's from internet sellers. I find buying on internet the best way to go. For whatever reason, Pen World is making a very bad move this time. | |

| Duofold scarlet tanager figurine | |
| 10/15/2001: Shel | |
| I would like to find a point-of-sale ceramic figurine that Parker used for their Duofold display. It was a scarlet tanager bird like one in an old print ad. There was one on ebay recently but it went for much more than The figurine base had two grooves in it for the Duofold to rest in. If anyone would like to sell one please email me direct. Thanks in advance. | |
| Pen World | |
| 10/15/2001: Gerald | |
| I reside in a small community in British Columbia. If I am to purchase fountain pens, it is by mailorder. The internet is an extension of mailorder. One of the reasons I purchase a magazine such as Pen World is because of the advertising by companies that do mailorder over the internet. If I cannot access such advertising companies then there is no point in purchasing the magazine. End of story. | |

| Pen World | |
| 10/15/2001: Stephen Lam | |
| I am saddened but not surprised to read about Penworld's recent decision to ban internet advertising. This decision is probably forced upon them for business reasons, probably the same commercial forces that changed it into nothing but a coffee table book for doctors' and dentists' surgeries.I was among the original subscribers to Penworld when it was a magazine on pen collecting. I decided not to renew my subscription last year. I don't think the ban will work. E-commerce is here to stay and those who want to buy via the internet will be able to do so through forums such as Penlovers. | |
| Ohio Pen Show in Columbus, November 1-4 | |
| 10/15/2001: Terry Mawhorter | |
| We are under three weeks to go and there is much work to be done to be ready for the show. Those who plan on staying at the Marriott, $87.per night/single or double, should call 1-800-228-3429 by the cut off date of midnight, October 17(we may get some wiggle room). There also are about 10 other hotels within a mile or so. Email for the names. The auction is shaping up nicely and we should have some photos up on the website by this weekend, check out www.ohiopenshow.com Just got word this am from a dealer who will attend with a 300 pen collection that has never been on the market. Forgot to mention that along with our wine/cheese, pizza and desert parties we will also serve you coffee each morning courtesy of Total Office Products/go-pens.com, The Conklin Pen Company and The Bexley Pen Company. By the way, the limited edition Multi-Max that Howard Levy is making to benefit the NY Firefighters Fund, will be sold by Howard's retailers. As to testing hard rubber pens, try rubbing the pen with some simichrome. If color, orange or black comes off on the cloth, it is probably hard rubber. | |
| PWI adversising policy | |
| 10/15/2001: James Goodwin | |
| Seems that PWI is under pressure from pen manufacturers to limit access to internet sellers to protect mfgr suggested retail price lists from internet discounters. That is the same PWI which discontinued its bulletin board for fear of criticism from users on certain pen brands. They do not have the guts to stand up and be independent and are totally dependent on advertisement revenue, plus the free pens given to them for glowing editorial reviews. | |
| PWI's Advertising Policy | |
| 10/15/2001: Hank | |
| Here's the e-mail I sent to PWI: Just read about your new advertising policy on PenLovers Forum. Have you gone mad? With more and more business being done on the internet how did you regress to the first half of the 20th century and back? Since the buck stops at Mr. Bowen's desk, he must have approved this. I'd really be interested in hearing the reason for a move like this considering that this letter is going to you through the internet. Is it fair to assume that PenWorld will be cancelleing its web site and all of your e-mail addresses will be deleted as well? Yours, Henry T. Field | |

| PWI's Advertising Policy | |
| 10/14/2001: jeff peirce | |
| It is interesting to note the change in the PWI advertising policy, and fun to speculate who is actually behind it. There has to be pressure for PWI to adopt such a stupid and harmful policy. The policy hurts the very pen collectors the magazine can no longer claim to serve. I suspect there is a boutique mentality at work here. Not just "bricks and mortar." This seems to be more along the lines of arrogance and viciousness, low quality and high prices. People should cancel their subscriptions to the magazine. Why pay to get a magazine which works against the people it laughably claims to serve? | |

| PEN WORLD AD POLICY | |
| 10/14/2001: Allen Gross | |
| Over the past 2 days I've received numerous responses to my last post, thankyou all. Pen World magazine has decided to no longer accept advertising from all internet dealers. If fact, those dealer with "brick and mortar" stores can no longer list their websites in advertising either. For those of you that are in rural areas and rely on the internet to buy pens versus driving to the closest major cityknow that this policy is wrong. I urge all of you that agree to send emails of protest to: ads@penworld.com and make your voice heard. Also, please tell your pen friends to do the same, thanks Allen | |
| re:dating vacs | |
| 10/14/2001: david i | |
| just peeked at a few canadian vacs from 1939-1940. Figured they had "dots" but now wondered. Fortunately, spotted dots aplenty. Another interesting thing about 1939 Canadian vacs. Many appear to have been made "correctly", "originally" or whatever with Non-"lifetime" clips on lifetime pens, even dating after the murky transition zone of early 1939 where high line pens classically evolved from feather clip to star clip to parker-BD clip. One can find Maximas with Maxima-size clips with "plain parker style. Never apparently made for usa pens. Neat stuff those canadian vacs. Not to mention the nice 9k presentation bands or the unusual cap-ring styles found on the repeater pens. david | |
| BHR vs Plastic | |
| 10/14/2001: Bill R. | |
| BHR, old thing, BHR. The nasty brown streak upon soaking is a sure sign. If it's dark enough, and shiny enough, BHR looks pretty close to plastic. Some say that if you rub the BHR hard and smell it, you candetect a smell of rubber, but I personally have never been able to do so, and besides, the chaps at the club tend to look askance at one when one starts rubbing ones writing equipment and sniffing it. Now, to take your mind off the discolored Diamond Point, I suggest you go find a nice fountain, and check it carefully for newts. | |

| BHR Vs. Plastic ? | |
| 10/13/2001: Gussie Fink Nottle | |
| What Ho chaps! I'm looking at a Diamond Point (clipless) eye-dropper pen. I thought eyedroppers were made before the invention of plastic - yet it looks all the world to me like it is made from black plastic. When I soaked it overnight in water, it developed a very nasty brown streak down the side. Is this how you tell it is rubber - or is there a better method - short of setting it on fire and smelling the fumes. Regards, Gussie | |

| Duck and Write | |
| 10/12/2001: rbruce | |
| Writing a column called "Of Wildlife and Conservation" in the November 17, 1958 issue of Linn's, a stamp-collector's newspaper, Thomas L. Lloyd discussed "duck stamps," part of a duck hunter's license documents and traditionally an example of duck-related art: "Duck stamps are easy to get...by persons interested in them. All one has to do, usually, is to ask a duck shooter, after the season is closed, if he will give his duck stamp to him. Since the stamp has no further use to the hunter, he usually complies willingly. But it nearly always has his name signed across the face of it, and usually is creased. "If the stamp happens to be from a good friend, or a well known person, the signature might make it more highly treasured, or more valuable. It is illegal for a person to hunt without his signature on the stamp. "I never signed mine, but always carrying [sic] a fountain pen, and if I saw a game warden, I quickly signed it. This happened only three times, in the 24 years during which we have been required to have them." So much for the theories that (1) fountain pens are ill suited to outdoor use and (2) impossible to wield quickly. | |

| 30 DAYS OUT | |
| 10/11/2001: Terry Mawhorter | |
| It has now been one month since we all stared in disbelief at what was happening in New York City. Our emotions ran high and they still do. There is much uncertainity about the future. Of this I am certain, America will survive this crisis and we will be an even better nation. A few weeks ago Sonya and I decided to donate 50% of the Ohio Pen Show proceeds to NYC/Washington disaster relief. We have selected the NY Firefighters Fund to receive the donation. We will have several raffles during the show to raise more money for this fund. As many of you know, Howard Levy, President of Bexley Pen has been involved with the Ohio Show from day one. Howard has decided to make a limited edition Multi-Max convertible. He is making only 88 and they will sell for $88. The piece will be in a woodgrain hard rubber with goldplate trim. These will be available in Columbus at the show Nov. 1-4. ALL NET PROCEEDS WILL BE GIVEN TO THE NY FIREFIGHTERS FUND. | |
| Pkr 51 with brown, swirl patterned barrel | |
| 10/11/2001: Michael R. | |
| There were possibly made in the 70's... by an argentinian company that bought the machines from Parker to produce the barrels. They comy in lots of colors (have seen purple/blue, red/pink, and beige/gold on white. They look quite appealing but as far as I know Parker didn't make the barrels but are made with Parker machines. Production is now stopped for those in Argentinia, too. | |
| Re: Pkr 51 with brown, swirl patterned barrel | |
| 10/11/2001: Dean | |
| Chances are good that the barrel is an after market one made by Bexley Pen Company. Howard has made these from many different materials including swirly ebonite, acrylic, and the one that I missed buying out of what looked like vacumatic rod stock. These are crafted very well and have a very nice look. They are not original Parker, but do use all the original Parker 51 guts. For you 51 fans that need to use a rollerball sometimes Bexley also makes a 51 rollerball conversion which again is done very nice. At most any pen show Howard will have 10-15 different barrel styles on hand. Dean | |

| CANADIAN PEN SHOW! | |
| 10/10/2001: Pearce Jarvis | |
| To anyone who has not looked to see when the next pen show is, here is an update. The next pen show is in Toronto Ontario, Canada. It is the only show in Canada, and is well worth attending. With the way the US currency compares to the Canadian, (I think the last time I checked every $1 US is worth about $1.55 Canadian), it gives many US buyers the opportunity to pick up some great deals at this show. For any more info you can check the link to pen shows on this site, or email me, or one of the others that are listed on the add. I hope to see some of you there! | |
| Thank you, one and all for supporting the NYC Pen Show | |
| 10/10/2001: Maryann and Steve at Penstop | |
| First, I am sorry that it has taken me so long to post to this list.
We have been in the state of confusion since the end of the New York City Pen Show. As you all know the show was a success in spite of all that has happened here in New York. We had the greatest bunch of people in the world supporting this show both those with their physical presence and and those with their emotional support and we are very grateful to all of you. The post show reports have been written and there is not much that I could add to any of them. Dean's article in Stylophiles was awesome and complete. Plenty of pictures were taken and posted on the various pen sites so by now you all have a good idea of who is who in the community. The auction for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was a huge success with the final figure of $35,100 being presented to the organization in the last hours of the show. This was only possible through the efforts of you, the fountain pen community. Without your help it could not have happened and again we are sincerely grateful. We are starting to plan next year's show. If we can bring a show to New York in a time when there is so much uncertainty, think what it could be like next year. Again, THANK YOU ONE AND ALL WITHOUT YOU IT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE. Maryann and Steve Zucker P.S. An update to the NYC Pen Show will be posted in the coming weeks and I will notify you when it is ready. |

| Pen prices in recession | |
| 10/9/2001: James Goodwin | |
| Like everything else, discretionary spending takes a hit once a recession hits. Pen prices do drop or remain stagnant. Two years ago on ebay, a Parker jotter flighter (1954) went to $242 in the last hour of bidding from $70 between two buyers. Will the buyer get back his $242 he paid on the pen? Probably not, but that was the harbinger of impulsive spending. Bargains are still there if you know where to look. Regards Jim | |

| I posted a comment replying to this question a couple of weeks ago. I checked the FAA web site, AND called airport office here in Syracuse, AND talked to someone at the security check point manned by one of the airlines. The answer is that fountain pens are allowed through. The FAA site mentions knives in particular as their concern. They might want to inspect the pen, (I would expect this to be the case with metal pens in particular) but they are allowed through. | |
| Dating Vacs | |
| 10/9/2001: Stephen Lam | |
| I have been collecting vacumatics for some time and there are a few in my pen box. Nothing fancy but I like them and their rather complicated filling mechanism. I have however never had the patience to study the imprints and the date codes in detail. Michael's comments aroused my interest. Whereupon I started to examine the imprints. Yes some have up to 3 dots around the date code. All except 2 of my Canadian vacs did not have any dot. I guess it might indicate that Canadian vacs made in the last quarter of the year (was it financial year or calendar year?) had better survival rates. Just out of curiosity, why did Parker use this method to indicate the production quarter ? Does it mean that on the last day of every quarter, all the stamps used in all the Parker factories all over the world were worked on to remove one dot, just to help the inventory people and the quality assurance guys to keep track of merchandise and maybe other people too, for who knows what reason ? This is really interesting. Is there any documentation detailing this procedure and explaining why it was done ? Please help. | |
| Dating Vacs | |
| 10/9/2001: Michael R. | |
| David, the number imprinted in the barrel gives you the production date in your case 1936 ( 6 ), because you say it looks like a thirties Vac (it could also be made in 1946 - there would be no difference in the number indicating a production date of '36 or '46, both would just have the 6). The dot(s) indicate(s) the quarter of the year it was produced in. As far as I know they started with three dots around the year digit at the beginning(first quarter), and than ground/file away one dot for each following quarter from the mould, leaving two for the second, one for the third (like yours) and none for the last quarter. I've heard of different theories, with starting with four dots, but I think the above is th correct one. Hope this helps | |
| Ebay bidding | |
| 10/8/2001: Frankie | |
| My personal view is that there is nothing wrong by trying to buy a pen at a lower price by bidding at he last minute. Obviously, if I really "must have" that pen,I will bid the maximum I can, well ahead of the auction closing time. With sniping the risk of not getting a pen is high, compensated somehow by the possibility that one may get a pen for a lower price. The lower the price you want to pay for the pen, the higher is the risk you're not going to get it. Nobody finds money on trees (do they?), so if I can save a buck legally, why not do it. Cheers | |
| Pen prices in these recessionary times | |
| 10/8/2001: Len Provisor | |
| Comic books, baseball cards and old beer cans, maybe. Pens, no. If someone has been "hit" by this recession and needs to let some pens go at a bargain for ready cash, don't think for a minute this is a harbinger of values in the pen collecting trade. Unless you've heard otherwise, the really good vintage ones are not being made anymore and are not any easier to find. The NYC Pen Show auction had some bargains only because of the limited number of people in the room, but recall also that one new pen did sell for a U.S. record $12,000. and clean Esterbrooks continue to be snapped up. | |
| Pen Prices, Recessionary times | |
| 10/8/2001: Dov | |
| In these recessionary economic times, stock market slump, burst of the hi tech and start-up baloon; would vintage and modern fp prices adjust accordingly. A lot of pens had become outrageously high. Of course there's the law of supply and demand as well. But if, as it seems, people have less money to spend on luxury and recreation goods, which is basically what this hobby/obsession is about, it's logical that prices will drop accordingly. Judging by ebay, dealers catalogues, even specials, this does not seem to be the case. The recent pen-bid NY charity auction did reflect these trends somewhat. People are generally wary to spend and tend to save for a rainy day - it's already here. Have any of you encountered drops in prices as a result of the current crisis and nervous economy. Just wondering. | |
| Dorics | |
| 10/8/2001: Don Lavin | |
| For many years I have asserted that the Dorics were my favorite vintage pen and the best design ever. Years ago, when people were curious about vintage pens, I would take the top pens from the early 30s and place them side by side and ask people to choose their favorite. I would use a Duofold Sr., Patrician, oversize Sheaffer Balance and a Doric. The Doric was always selected. I mean always selected and the best looking and most interesting pen by non pen collectors. And further proof can be shown by Omas's continued success using the Doric design to this day. The Doric was eons ahead of its time with faceted celluloid, roller clips, personal points that screwed in and out easily, and a drop dead gorgeous design. They were manufacturered for almost 10 years with beautiful colors and wonderful cap bands. The only drawback to the Doric line is the instability of certain, not all, of the colors which do degrade easily. | |
| Dorics | |
| 10/8/2001: Rick | |
| Interesting discussions of eBay. I just bought a Doric on eBay but it had cracks not emphasized in the description so the seller very kindly told me he would refund my money. But it has gotten me juiced up about Dorics. I think they are the coolest vintage pens going. The ones I have written with just glide over the page. And the design is superior. I actually think they are better to look at than the Patrician!! What is the concensus on this observation. | |

| FPs & airport security | |
| 10/8/2001: Saul | |
| I don't have any authoritative knowledge on the subject. But just the same, I am planning on only bringing a couple of my "lesser" pens on my next flight, and I will have a self-addressed, postage-paid bubblelope ready in case I need to ditch them. | |

| FPs & airport security | |
| 10/8/2001: chris | |
| No problems at all with fountain pens, just knives etc.. after all once you get thru security you can buy pens at the shops before the gates anyway.Currently security staff are doing the "smear" test for explosives & drugs & pens are not on the new restricted items lists. | |
| FPs & airport security | |
| 10/8/2001: Jim Greenberg | |
| Has anyone gotten through airport security lately with a fountain pen? I was thinking that it is a sharply pointed object and that we might run the risk of having a cherished FP confiscated and tossed. Comments? Thanks. Jim | |
| Ebay practices | |
| 10/8/2001: ron | |
| There's a good reason why someone doesn't want to bid until the last moment(s) - they don't want to have to pay any more than is necessary for the item! This is sure to raise a lot of dandruff, (OK, dander, but the other is a lot more fun) - but I'll say it anyhow. There is a natural tension between the seller and the buyer. The one wants to get as much as possible, the other wants the item for as little as possible. The only real advantage to a longer auction is exposure - more people are likely to notice the item. But a buyer may not bid until the last moment because he doesn't want to push the price up, which happens when you bid early in the auction. You bid, and if an earlier bidder wants the item enough, they will bid against you, and they now know that you are interested too. Maybe someone bids, you still outbid them, they try a second or third time and decide that things have gone too far, so they back out - with you now sitting at a much higher price! MAYBE they really wanted to buy the item, maybe it was just casual bidding. But if you wait, there is the chance that nobody will be watching at the end! It's happened to me (as has the earlier scenario) Like I said, there is a natural tension between buyer and the seller. That's part of the fun, and the risk in auctions. | |
| Ebay Practices | |
| 10/8/2001: Stephen Lam | |
| I really don't see what the fuss is all about. If a buyer puts in a bid which is the maximum amount he/she is prepared to pay for the item, how can any sniping alter the outcome of the sale, as far as that particular buyer is concerned ?? If someone else is prepared to pay a higher price for the item, then naturally that someone will win, regardless of when the last bid is made. If on the other hand one simply enter a low bid hoping one will get lucky, why can't other people outbid you, again irrespective of the timing of the last bid ?? | |
| Re; Ebay Practices | |
| 10/8/2001: Bruce | |
| Other Internet auctions have a policy that the end time of an auction is extended by some fixed time (e.g. 15 minutes) past the last bid. I don't know why eBay has never taken that approach. It would prevent "sniping". It would be a better auction with perhaps more meaningful association of the item with its value. | |
| Ebay Practices | |
| 10/8/2001: Mike | |
| Here is a scenario I had play out in a 3-day Ebay auction. Not for a pen, but I tell this to illustrate buyer practices. The last 1 minute 30 seconds of the auction, I refreshed the page every 30 seconds or so. A couple of bids had already been placed. Well, each time I refreshed the page in that last minute and a half, another person had sniped the last. The price of my item had doubled in 90 seconds in what I term a "snipe fest." I hate this practice. I think that it is low-down. I also wonder why 3, 5, 7, and 10 day auctions are needed when most of the bidding happens in the very last minutes of an auction. It would certainly save me a lot of time if they would simply make 1 hour auctions!! | |
| Dating Vacumatic | |

| I just acquired a small Parker Vacumatic that has 6. after the name. It looks like a mid-1930s pen based on what I can learn from Paul Erano's book. The pen has the arrow clip and a single gold band on the cap. Anybody able to deciper the date code? | |
| Mont Blanc Pens | |
| 10/8/2001: Bill | |
| On a recent trip to Germany, I was looking for several models of Mont Blanc pens. All the prices I found were higher than prices I have seen on eBay. Shouldn't the prices be better there? I'm going back soon, and would appreciate any info. Will be in Frankfurt. Thanks. | |

| natural inks | |
| 10/7/2001: rbruce | |
| The amusing exchange on mollusk "inks" brings up perhaps more rational possibilities: plant inks. There are a couple plants known as "inkberries," principally the pokeweed. It produces spikes of purplish berries about now. There are probably other plant inks that have been used, i.e., in colonial times. Does anyone have any (credible) information on the manufacture of inks from natural U.S. plant sources? | |

I need to replace and local price is $120+ Before I spend so much I want some help from the ng. I remember seeing somewhere at $79 or thereabouts. Can anyone please advise me where I can find the VP at reduced price. I have the old model but am not particularly enamoured by it. I am prepared to buy excellent used if anyone wants to sell. Thanks Dov R

| Inquiry | |
| 10/7/2001: P.Ross | |
| This isnt strictly a collecting question, but I hope some collectors might be able to help me. Im putting together a documentary on the participation of American companies in espionage and other covert action during WW2, with emphasis on government-commissioned applications of cutting-edge technologies by manufacturing firms with no previous experience of military or police work. As you probably are aware, pens and watches have long been favorite means of concealing other devices. I am currently trying to track down information on certain Parker pens specially adapted to carry microfilm. This has been a long-term project, and unfortunately some of our elderly sources have passed away since research began. One had mentioned in an interview that a certain East Coast pen collector named John Quevas had two of these pens, striped Vacumatics. At the time I did not pursue the matter in any detail, so it is not clear if there was a secret compartment or if the microfilm was actually incorporated in the material of the pens. Parker seems to have kept no record of their secret defense work, and so far government sources have, for whatever reasons, not been very helpful. Would any of you be able to add anything to this picture, or to help us locate Mr. Quevas? Please feel free to repost this note on other boards where pen collectors congregate, as I am sure there are others besides this newsgroup. Thanks! | |

| looking for Levenger sterling silver pen | |
| 10/6/2001: =^..^= | |
| I purchased a sterling silver pen from Levenger a few years ago and it has broken where the pen screws onto the barrel. Levenger no longer sells the model and cannot tell me who made it for them. It has a Sterling silver barrel & cap and is thin & weighty. Does anyone know what pen I am talking about and where I can find another? If not, where can I find another like it? My requirements are Sterling Silver with a thin barrel. Also, if anyone knows of a place I could have it repaired. Thanks for any help anyone can offer. | |
| squids and ink | |
| 10/6/2001: Richard | |
| The "ink" from an octopus or squid is not suitable for use in a fountain pen. This substance, called sepia, derives its color from suspended granules of melanin (the same brownish pigment that is found in human skin and hair). Fountain pen inks should be solutions, not suspensions, to avoid clogging the pen. Furthermore, sepia is not lightfast; it will fade. You can use it in dip pens or brushes for calligraphy or art, but find a nice brown commercial fountain-pen ink for your writing instruments. :-) | |
| re: ink question | |
| 10/6/2001: Squidward | |
| yes, you can use the ink from an octopus right from its ink sack. be sure to use it only in very expensive limited edition pens, though. the ink does stink, but then if you've used waterman ink this should pose no serious problems for you. good luck and keep fishing. squidward | |

| A question for experienced fountain pen users. | |
| 10/6/2001: Karl | |
| I maintain a journal, send many letters, and do a lot of record keeping. With all this I have decided to venture into the world of fountain pens, but I being a novice on the subject need help. Ive learned that these Pens can get expensive and I will hold off on those until I am more knowledgeable, but Ive found an inexpensive pen. I would like to know if its a good pen for a beginner. Its by a company called Patrick Edition Pens, and costs $20. The pen is metal, and med weight to light. It comes with a standard nib and a cartridge that I would like to replace with a converter for bottled ink. The pen is advertised at this addressàhttp://www.cajunpen.com/html/economy_pens.html. Also, is there any good converter for this pen or are they all pretty standard. I would really appreciate any other suggestions on fountain pens for beginners, something that would last for a few years until I am ready for a more expensive pen. I am also looking for good ink. I came across a nice six-pack set by Levenger in their catalogue, but some people say Levenger ink clogs pens. Does anyone know about that or have any suggestions? Thanks an advanced. You can email me directly at Bently4K@aol.com | |

| Mystery Pen Identified! | |
| 10/6/2001: Bill R. | |
| Well, we should have known it wouldn't take long, it was just under a day before the correct answers came pouring in! We actually have three winners, since this is a complicated pen, we might have figured as much. Kurt Hammerbeck was first in,identifying it as a Visconti, followed in very short order by Michael Richter, who identified it as a "Tropen Celluloid Kolbenfüllhalter", made by Schroder GmbH in Germany. Then, to cap it off, we received a note from Doug Vicary, who pointed us to the official Visconti website, www.visconti.it, where the Mystery pen is shown to be the Visconti Replica, made in 1989! So, Kurt and Doug win, of course, but Michael does as well, as it seems that Visconti made the pens for Tropen, or the other way around. The Mystery pen does indeed have a nib marked "Tropen Iridium Nichroma", which matches his description of the Tropen version. Thanks to everyone for your guesses, and also to our winners for the wealth of info they have provided on this unusual pen! Bill | |

| Website, Ohio Pen Show | |
| 10/6/2001: Terry Mawhorter | |
| Ok, the website now conforms with our advertising, the letters we have been sending you and the flyers that we have out in some 200 antique shops and malls throughout Ohio and the six surrounding states. The flyer on the show, which we put out in Chicago, did not talk about a two show to the public, Saturday and Sunday. That decision was made after the Chicago show. Email with questions. Enough of that. Drove to a Dayton area show yesterday. Picked up a double jewel 51 with aluminum end jewels, dark blue barrel and a flighter style cap. Date coded near the clutch ring "8" but marked "Made in USA Parker 51" on the blind cap, plastic filler. Comments from you 51 experts. Also heard a "tall" story about a "Big Red" going to $8000. on Ebay. Finally figured out it must have been a Parker Red Giant. I was told the pen did not sell. Can anyone confirm that such a pen was listed on Ebay and add to the story? | |
| Shill bids and unethical conduct | |
| 10/6/2001: Don Lavin | |
| Shill bidding is not permitted on ebay but go discover it and then see what,if any, action Ebay will take. I have discovered lots of shill bidding on ebay going back for 4 years. It occurred with domestic and with foreign sellers. The patterns became obvious when you investigated each item the sellers were offering and who was bidding on what. As for certain unethical bidding, last summer I discovered a practice being used on ebay and which an unscrupulous buyer could easily utilize. Two bidders could conspire to get a pen by having the first buyer make the first or then highest bid and then place additional maximum bids which are not registered on ebay. Then the friend makes a very high or outrageous bid early in the auction. Viewers of the item become discouraged by the high bid and don't bid on it. Then with less than an hour to go the high bidder retracts his or her bid for some invalid reason. The bidding reverts back to the first bid by the underbidder, not his highest maximum bid and voila, the duo could score a nice pen for very little. That is why numerous sellers will place the following statement in their descriptions "Seller reserves the right to withdraw the items or stop the auction in the event that the high bid is retracted on the last day of the auction." This makes a lot of sense. | |
| My biding | |
| 10/6/2001: Don Lavin | |
| Unbelieveable. I make one post about a pen I wanted and all this crap is posted. By bid it up I meant that I left a maximum bid I was willing to pay and which I believed to be the value of the pen. That bid was on the high side. There was only one other bidder and he decided to overbid me at the end which was his or her perogative. When I placed my maximum bid the pen was only selling at around $50.00. Instead of sitting on the computer for days and at the last hour, I bid it up to its value. Instead of playing the leap frog game which so many buyers tend to do, I like to follow the lead of several of my friends and just place the maximum bid and then see what happens. When I referred to the fact that I did not want to see the pen "stolen" I wanted to make sure that if I got distracted on the final day of the auction (which happens all too often) that I would not feel remorse about not having placed my high bid. Was I upset over having to pay my highest bid? Not at all. I love that pen and I use it along with its brothers - similar model, different color. By the way, the pen was advertised as "coral" but it was actually a rich purple snakeskin model. | |
| Stylophiles Update | |
| 10/6/2001: Dean Tweeddale | |
| Sorry for the delay but finally we have finished the October Stylophiles including the New York Show reviews and a bonus piece on the live Maki-e exhibit/demonstration that Platinum Pen brought to the show. This issue of Stylophiles marks the first year anniversary that Stylophiles Online Magazine has been on Penlovers. I must say that in that year we have come a long way. This issue alone has 140+ images and is packed with articles and information. It has been terrific working with Bill Riepl on each issue or update as we strive to bring more and better content to you. We of course hope that you enjoy reading and viewing each issue and as always we are open to questions, comments, and suggestions to create a better site. Dean Tweeddale | |
| Wahl Deco bands...to die for | |
| 10/6/2001: Len Provisor | |
| Hey folks! Let's get back to pens. Have you seen the Pen Collections on the Home Page? Check out the Wahl Deco Bands in particular. Being from the Chicago area, home of Wahl Eversharp, now converted to luxury yuppy townhome apartments and condos, you would think it easy to find them like Estys. Not quite. In twenty years I've found a handful, so I concentrate on my "51"s, more plentiful and some of the best I've found have been at pen shows, except for the 14K yellow/green Empire a friend gave me that he found inside his couch as he was about to throw it in the garbage!!! Did find some Wahl prototypes a few years ago, a red-black-yellow ripple (a keeper), a all clear demo that was a combo screw piston-pump AND a snorkel..and it actually worked. Sorry, sold it at Chicago auction a few years ago. I had an oversize olive/black ripple I really did not want to sell, olive/black was only used for some desk holders, so the oversize pen was quite rare. Well, was showing to a friend at Chicago this year, and after a few hundred "No, no, no it's not for sale." He finally got me weak in the knees with a exceptional offer I could not refuse. Ever been there? Know the feeling? Well, I kissed that sweet one good bye, and all that was left was another Sumgai story, all I paid for that one was a few dollars at the flea. BTW, did I ever tell you about that "funny clown pen" (Waterman 20) slipcap pretty clean, light imprint w/perfect nib I found at the same flea for $3. Them were the days. If you have some killer Wahls or other neat pens you should send it to Dean for addition to the Pen Collection series. This is a great feature of Penlovers, and I will be sending some of my more unusual "51"s to share with Penlover readers. | |
| Anonymous | |
| 10/6/2001: Rod | |
| Actually, I thought that "Dona" was a typographical error; it was a POSSIBLE reason, therefore, not stupid. I do NOT condone any tampering with the fairness of auctions. I do not approve of any unethical behavior of any kind - aks anyone who knows me and they will tell you that I am an ethical and honorable person. But, I also do not like anonymity in this setting. If someone disagrees with me, then I would prefer to discuss our difference on an equal and fair footing. Again, there are numerous people on this board with whom I have argued about one topic or another; many times they are able to logically convince me that there is a great deal of validity to their opinion and I always accept that someone has the right to an opinion different from mine. I meant no harm toward you - whoever you are. | |

| after going cold turkey on ebay for some months, i had begun to consider another swing at the old virtual dockyard, but the posts below have done their job. . i don't think i can stomach all that weird psychology again. my question: what if all the snipe bidders are using TURBOBID (TM)? that software apparently is guarenteed against refund to let you sneak a last minute bid. well, i guess the highest 'turbid' bidder wins! | |

| "Dona" was a typo, of course. What a stupid assumption that I tried to imply some "femininity". I am not a coward. The only nasty thing here is Don's behavior , and you protecting him. | |

| 10/5/2001: Richard | |
| I have just cleverly managed to split the section on a 1933/34 OVERSIZE Balance. This is the longer of the oversize sections; the visible portion when assembled is .570" (14.48 mm) long. Does anyone out there have a replacement part for sale? | |
| HELP! Cleaning Colibri Fountain Pen | |
| 10/5/2001: George | |
| I have a Colibri fountain pen with which I have been using MontBlanc Cartridges. It stopped writing after several weeks' disuse and I find that neither ink nor water can be flushed through the nib. Several days' soaking is water or water & detergent has not dissolved whatever is blocking the nib. Has anyone any suggestions on a better cleaning procedure or dissassembly of the nib so individual components can be cleaned? Thanks! | |

| Two new inks -- Midnight Blues (a true blue-black) and Gray Flannel (a velvety dark gray) are now available from Private Reserve Ink, and can be seen at www.privatereserveink.com. Contact your favorite ink dealer to order. Also, Baby Lips Pink has been discontinued. | |
| Dear annonymous | |
| 10/5/2001: Rod | |
| While "getting you friends to bid, to get a higher final value" is unethical, I doubt that it is illegal. Referring to Don as Dona (implying the feminine Donna) was not very nice - or was it just a typographical error. I usually ignore annonymous postings, but if your aim was to be nasty and not take responsibility for your actions, then you are a coward. | |
| Don Lavin's bidding experience | |
| 10/5/2001: Stephen Lam | |
| Don, in a similar situation, I would ask the seller to disregard alll the bids made by the "high bidder" which would then come up with a final bid that would have been reached had the overseas bidder not entered into the equation. Of course, it could end up being the same level but sometimes some sellers ask friends to put bids hoping to alter the final outcome. When this is overdone, the high bidder will of course like to withdraw, allowing the underbider to buy the item. As a regular seller/bidder, I will bid on an item that I consider of merchandise value if the bidding level is below what I perceive to be the market value. If I win the bid, so be it. If I lose, that is OK too. | |
| Ohio Pen Show | |
| 10/5/2001: Terry Mawhorter | |
| Calling all frustrated Ebayers: maybe it's time to take out some "cheap" insurance - attend a pen show where you can see it, touch it, feel it, get a second opinion, haggle, pay by cash or check on the spot and start writing with it. Oh yea, no shipping fees. Hey I know pen shows are not cheap to attend: hotel room, airfare or gas, admission fee. I have always said and will always say, education is not free. You will also learn a lot and network at a show. Think about the Ohio Show: early admission begins on Thursday, November 1 at 10am and runs through 9am Saturday, November 3, when we open to the general public till 3pm at $5. per head (again on Sunday, 10am till 4pm). Gas is down to $1.07, jump in the car and head our way. This is show number 7. NEW FEATURE on Thursday, a wine and cheese welcome party; Friday, return of the Pizza Party courtesy of PenLovers.net and PENDEMONIUM(thank you, thank you!); Saturday your hosts Terry and Sonya will provide some the best deserts you have seen! Email with your snailmail address and we will rush out a flyer or visit the website www.ohiopenshow.com By the way, the flyer was printed before we went to the two day public show and I need to update the website. | |
| Chicago Pen Club Meeting Oct 14 | |
| 10/4/2001: Len Provisor | |
| This is the revised date for our very first Chicago Pen Club meeting. Sunday Oct 14 2pm at Borders bookstore in Deerfield, IL SE corner of Lake-Cook and Waukegan Roads. In the coffee shop on first floor, crowds should be light, management knows we're coming. No rules, no dues. Just bring anything pen/ink related for show and tell, discussion, trading or selling. I'll bring pictures from the NYC Pen Show and my vintage Parker aircraft photos, and maybe some "51"s, too. Call your friends, amazingly at least one pen collector friend of mine does not have a computer. Remember what that was like? | |
| Bidding up The Pen | |
| 10/4/2001: Allan | |
| There is nothing wrong about doing this. What you are doing is putting a high price on a pen, hoping that no one else will go that high. I recently bid a very high price on a pen, and then had to increase my bid because someone else outbid what I thought was my very high price. Thats how bidding wars start. I saw a Sheaffer Secretary Pen in a box go for over $1800. Now that is a sample of overbidding. | |
| Don Lavin | |
| 10/4/2001: | |
| What do you mean by "I had bid the pen up as I did not want anyone to steal it if I could not get it". Sounds low mean and disgusting. | |
| Ebay Descriptions | |
| 10/4/2001: Don Lavin | |
| Some very interesting comments made. I have one interesting story. Last summer a beautiful Carter pen was offered for sale by a non-pen dealer. Bad description and bad photo but I wanted the pen so I bid on it. As it turns out I was outbid at the end so I thought that it was all over but the shouting. 2 days later I receive an e-mail from the seller asking me if I was still interested in the pen. I wrote back that I was the underbidder. The dealer advised me that in her description she stated "Only U.S. bidder" and the high bidder was from the far east. She advised the high bidder that she would not sell the pen to him so she offered it to me at my underbid. I had bid the pen up as I did not want anyone to steal it if I could not get it so all of a sudden I am now the buyer. Thankfully the seller followed my instructions and examined the pen carefully and answered all of my questions. I bought the pen and it turned out to be in even better condition than I could have imagined and in a color I did not have and have never seen before or since. So I lucked out and the overseas bidder did not. Don | |
| Dealer Kit | |
| 10/4/2001: Esther | |
| Some of the most valuable collectibles are dealer demo kits and other dealer items. Today's kits are going to become tomorrow's highly desireable and hard to find items. I am offering the following kit: The Sanford Sample Kit is a product which only authorized dealers can purchase. The kit consists of two leather-like high quality vinyl attaché cases. The large one contains some 45 samples of "Promotional Products" items from Paper Mate, Parker, Uni-Ball, Sharpie, Expo, Accent, and more. All of the items have engraved logos of various companies. Inside that attaché case is a smaller case with 23 pens from the "Gift Line" by Waterman, Parker and Rotring. Again, these are engraved samples. We have added the 24th pen (an Ellipse BP). Finally, there are two catalogs, the Sanford "Business-To-Business", and the "2001 Source Book". The cases have elastic loops to hold the pens, and they can be used for diplaying or storing your collection. As such, they are worth a pretty buck. The retail value of these products is $1,200 (per Sanford). We have a single kit for sale at $250. Thank you. | |
| re: ebay gripes | |
| 10/4/2001: david i | |
| i can agree with many of the gripes noted below and have experienced most of them from either side of the aisle. In my earliest days in the hobby, i groused about the scammery put forth by irresponsible or even frankly fraudulent sellers. Later in my selling days, i've groused about the irresponsible buyers. heh. But some food for thought. Ebay is, remember, a forum that lends retail access to the amateurs and hack-amateur-newbies amongst us. Few years ago, we did not have access to 7000 pens listed each week, or have opportunity to pretend to be retailers without shelling out the cost of a storefront business. Now, with ebay, we have all that. Certainly some of the transactions are rough at the edges. And, it has taken some effort to "optimize" giant pen pics so i can load three pics and keep it under 100k, but even 100k is too long for some bidders to wait, but what can one do. On other hand, i've been hosed as a seller, too. Try my latest one. I've now listed twice a neat Rolex Datejust Oysterquartz gold (18k) and steel watch needing meaningful work. Think these "retail" mint around 4-5 thousand bucks. This one reserved around 900 and once BIN's around 900 bucks. Both times, some shleps with zero feedback "won" the pen and then quit ebay. Do you know what a pain it is to get ebay to credit an account??! Anyway, on the next listing, i will post as politely as possible that no one with 3 neg feedback or less than 20 total will have bid honored. I will not use BIN as that lets idiots bid then vanish in first day of auction. BUT i will ship to anyone in any country and all bidders are always welcome to my lil' auctions. regards. david | |
| Yafa service kudos | |
| 10/4/2001: Steve | |
| Great service experience with an unfortunate mishap that deserves notice. Shortly after acquiring a Delta Republic of the Seas LE fountain pen, I dropped it nib first of course, on to the kitchen floor. I took it back to the dealer from where I purchased the pen for advice, and they were kind enough to do an on the spot repair to keep the ink flowing for no charge. The nib lost some of the platinum and was still pretty ugly. I then decided to contact Delta (YAFA) for advice. I spoke with Marty to set up the repair and braced myself for a few months wait. I sent the pen in on 10/01/01 and recieved a call today (10/04/01) that it was done, and ready to ship back. Folks, that's same day turn arround. The cost was extremely reasonable and they (YAFA) have a definite fan looking for my next Delta (Lugdunum more than likely). Good people to deal with! | |
| ebay descriptions | |
| 10/4/2001: Vicki | |
| Right-on, Ron! From those of us who really try hard to meet the demands of serious collectors in our descriptions, we are cognizant of the problems. Sooooo many times, I have said "US only" and then a foreign bidder wins the bid. As Ron said, "what are ya gonna do?" They haven't bothered to follow "the rules." But, like Ron, I go through the complicated process of shipping wherever the buyer is. AND yes, almost ALL of the electronic payment methods are costly or problematic for the seller; don't bid/buy if you don't like the payment method. I always offer to refund immediately if not exactly as described. Ron and I can't speak for the others, but we sellers who really try to photograph and describe our pens as well and completely as possible resent ALWAYS being lumped in with the rotten apples. | |
| ebay descriptions | |
| 10/4/2001: Stephen Lam | |
| So there are eBayers who are less than careful/professional with their descriptions. Their pictures are not up to your high standards and probably are too large for your modem speed. I guess their punishment will be that many prospective buyers will ignore these items. I do and I would suggest that do likewise, unless of course the pen is too interesting to pass. | |
| ebay descriptions | |
| 10/4/2001: Ron | |
| So Martin - regarding your pet peeve #2. If I say "US bidders only," and put it in the description, then what if a Canadian buyer bids anyhow, AND wins the auction. Now what do I do? I want to sell the item because I need or want the cash but the buyer has not respected my terms. I, as the SELLER am stuck. Selling to Canadian buyers is more difficult, more expensive and can take a lot longer because Canada Post is rather slow. I don't like it, but I do it. I have ended up modifying my listings saying that paymend has to be in USD, and the buyer HAS to pay for Global Priority mail - at about $7 US. It's a royal pain. r.e Item #5. I don't operate a business. PayPal and it's cousins can be a real pain at times. I prefer money order or check - both buying and selling. As the seller, that's my choice. Don't like it? Don't bid. Having said that, I do try to be flexable, but that works both ways! | |
| ebay descriptions | |
| 10/4/2001: Martin Smith | |
| Besides the crappy descriptions, here are a couple of my pet peeves. 1. Sellers who click "will sell to U.S. only" then to find further down in their info that international bids accepted. 2. Sellers who click "will sell to U.S. only" then if you ask them the reply is - sure we ship to Canada. 3. Pictures that are not optomized or cropped, waiting a couple minutes to see someones carpet or table top with a tiny pen on it. 4. Those stupid "click to see image" or click to enlarge (that don't work). 5. No description concerning the pen at all just a picture and shipping info. 6. Not offering any electronic payment method. I'm sure there are a couple more I've missed but it's still early in the morning. Cheers Martin | |
| October Stylophiles Online! | |
| 10/4/2001: Dean Tweeddale | |
| Just wanted to let everyone know that the October Stylophiles Magazine is now online. Well almost there are a couple more pieces coming in the next day or so but we didnt want to keep the rest from you. Sorry its a bit late but traveling to and from the New York Show (which by the way was the first trip that Ive taken to a pen show where all the flights left and arrived on time) got in the way of finishing the coding a bit. This is an entirely new issue with lots of great articles, reviews, and more. Hope you enjoy and Ill give another message when the last pieces are done. Dean | |
| ebay descriptions | |
| 10/4/2001: Cory | |
| One of the most irritating aspects of ebay title descriptions is the necessity some sellers have to waste our time & deliberately mislead. Classic case in point is "RaRe 1920 Swan Gold Overlay Pen" which would somehow lead you to imagine a fully overlaid eyedropper or at least an overlaid leverfiller. The reality when your slow non-broadband download finally reveals the whole lot in all its glory is exquisitely annoying - "This is a 1920 Swan pen which has a overlay gold filled band on the pen and marked Patent Jan. 19 1915 on the clip." Well excuse me but if I wanted to search for a black pen with a gold-filled band I would expect at least an indication of it in the title. This is just the tip of the iceburg as it seems countless braindead sellers are confusing gold & silver with brass & aluminum every day - "Fair enough" you might say- most of the sellers are amateurs who just don't know. Well for this buyer it's not fair enough it's downright maddening when I consider the time wasted with such junk. Does anyone have an idea either for a program that can bypass this or for something ebay can do - and I'm maily moaning at the dealers who are deliberately being disingenuous. | |
| Porsche Design Pens again | |
| 10/4/2001: rebecca | |
| A few days ago, I posted a query about a discontinued arc-clip porsche design pen (gunmetal blue or black) (not the hose model). Thanks to 2 responses leading me to Paradise Pens in Colorado and NJ, I have succeeded in landing a fountain pen in that sleek design. (Thanks!) Am still looking for the ballpoint in the arc-clip design. But Paradise Pens says that those are long gone, and none of their stores in America has ballpoint stock remaining. So, if anyone has such a porsche design ballpoint they'd like to sell, I'm interested. | |
| Beautiful Pocket Knife to Accompany a Pen | |
| 10/4/2001: Esther | |
| If you have on your desk or in the box a black pen with a Chinese Lacquer finish, or any nice black pen, such as a Duofold, you may want to add this little jewel to it. This is a rare Wenger Swiss Army small classic-style knife with a clip blade, nail file, and scissors. The knife has Chinese lacquer scales, and a gold plate trim of 24K or 22K (I am not sure). This is a long discontinued item. It comes with a velvet-lined box, with an outside cardboard sleeve for protection. It also has a small velvet pouch to carry in, so that it does not scratch. The knife is mint new-old-stock. Never used or carried. When it was availabe, the retail price was $110. I am offering it for $65 plus shipping. Pictures available if you have a high-speed interenet connection. This is not just a Gentleman's knife, it is as much a Gentlewoman's knife. Thank you. | |
| Ohio Pen Show Nov 1-4 | |
| 10/4/2001: Len Provisor | |
| My Volvo it's almost time to make a bee-line down Interstate 94 to Columbus in just four more weeks. One of my favorite pen shows, and a great fall drive through the Midwest. Good antiquing along the way, too. Terry and Sonya Mawhorter are having a two day show open to the public this year, so you know there is going to be some healthy traffic for both new and vintage dealers. I heard talk of some Blues and Bluegrass entertainment sites that are really hot for Fri or Sat nite, would be a good idea to get a group togethor for a real Jam. Since I'm driving I'm hauling a whole load of really nice vintage "stuff" so be sure to see me early for the best pickin's. Going to be a fattening weekend, pizza party, desert party, Dean's Penlovers famous cookies, yum! | |

| New York Cookie Boy | |
| 10/3/2001: Allen Gross | |
| Some of you that attended the New York show may have noticed that a new cookie boy was present. It was our own Bert Heiserman. What Bert lacked in bustline he made up for with lighting speed ! Nobody passes out cookie's faster than Bert Heiserman !! Thanks Bert for keeping up the cookie girl tradition. | |
| Ooohh, I'm jealous! | |
| 10/3/2001: Bruce | |
| I really wish I could have attended the NYC Pen Show, but I am on the west coast and was not in a position at this time to afford the time and expense for my hobby. But I was in NYC in May and my wife and I also split a corned beef sandwich at the Carnegie Deli. As a matter of fact, we had to go back the next night to split a cheesecake. I've been reading all the postings and hope I will be able to go to a future NYC show. For now, perhaps Steve and Maryann can clone themselves in San Francisco. We have a beautiful city and great Dungeness Crab, as well as a terrific bunch of collectors in the area and lots who would come out here again. Just need a show. | |
| THANK YOU Steve & Maryann for a great NYC Pen Show | |
| 10/3/2001: Len Provisor | |
| I second that motion! I went to NY with certain expectations, under the circumstances, and was not disappointed. Huge thanks are due not only to our hosts the Zuckers, but also to every dealer and exhibitor that attended. Their presence showed support to the Show and also to the people of New York. Attending were visitors from Australia, Canada, UK, Spain and other points far and wide. Being a newbie to NY I was incredibly impressed with the service and the courtesy of anyone we meet that learned we came to a trade show...and we were spending MONEY. I have to admit, that Carnegie Deli corn beef on rye was so huge, it was the first time in my life I split one, and the splitee was Charles Harles. BTW, the Carnegie Deli is owned by Milton Parker and his son Jeffrey....no relation. Folks, make it a point to be at the NYC Pen Show next year. It's not only the Show, it's New York. Oh, Marv...NJ Pen Show no longer exists...it is now the NYC Pen Show. Thanks again to the Zuckers, our Pen Fairy Maryann and Steve "you ain't seen nothin' yet!" Zucker. | |
| Thanks to Steve and Maryann | |
| 10/3/2001: Charlie Harles | |
| I can't thank Steve and Maryann enough for putting on the NYC Pen Show under difficult circumstances. If you were not able to go you missed: great pen dealers, great pen deals, the BEST pastrami sandwich at Carnagie Deli, strolling through Times Square, and oogling the 'bunnies' at Hef's roast. Only thing missing was Dean's 'cookie lady'. I'm ready to make my reservations for 2002! | |

| Waterman "Night and Day" for sale | |
| 10/2/2001: Northwest Pen Works | |
| Waterman "Night and Day" in gold plated overlay, and black. It is Mint In Box. I am told this special edition Waterman was discontinued in 1997. The nib is a medium in 18K, but is fat for a medium, and looks more like a broad to me. This is a really cool pen, even the box is cool looking, it's dark blue and textured like a 1930's vintage box might be. The lid is curved and has a neat art deco strap/flap that snaps down on top of the lid. Inside the box on the upper tray is the pen and a booklet telling about the Night and Day. On the lower tray is a full box of cartridges, and the instruction booklet with warrantee card is also hinding down there. The converter is missing. I am selling the pen for less than the original sticker price. The first firm e-mail stating I want the Night and Day gets the pen for $350.00 plus shipping with insurance, and deliv. conf. http://home.teleport.com/~mmcneil/WatNDinbx.jpg http://home.teleport.com/~mmcneil/WatNDbxtp.jpg http://home.teleport.com/~mmcneil/WatNDnib.jpg http://home.teleport.com/~mmcneil/WatNDco.jpg http://home.teleport.com/~mmcneil/WatNDco2.jpg http://home.teleport.com/~mmcneil/WatNDuc2.jpg Types of payment accepted PAYPAL, Money Orders, Checks, BidPay, U.S. Cash Currency. Yes, I actually got a new pen, but it's red and black hard rubber!! If you want a pen that has nice balance, weight, that organic feel of hard rubber, I highly recommend the Liaison. | Help! Need to identify pen | |
| 10/2/2001: Jinx | |
| I would like to buy my sister a pen like the one a visitor to our office was using, but I have no idea who manufactures it. It was a beautiful, sleek silvery, pearly pen with an unusual feature: The grip was smushy, almost gel-like, maybe even silicone. Ihe grip was so comfortable and comforting to hold; almost sensual. And the pen itself is so aesthetically pleasing. If anyone knows the manufacturer of the pen I've described, as well as where it can be purchased, I would be very thankful. | |

| Parker 51 sets FS | |
| 10/1/2001: rick propas | |
| I shall soon begin selling pens both on e-Bay and on my own site. I'd like to start off with three sets that are not perfect, but may be of interest as "special" users. First: 1944 Parker 51 Double Jewel Pen and Pencil in buckskin, one of the rarest colors. Thus color is not to be confused with the later tan or cocoa in the aerometric. For every buckskin you see you will see ten mustards and two or three nassaus. The caps are also uncommon, the evenly lined gold fill. The set is fully reconditioned and ready to write with a new diaphragm, fresh leads and original, fresh eraser. All restoration work is done by me to the highest standards and is guaranteed for two years. The set does have two minor issues which make it a user rather than a cornerstone of your 51 collection. The pen barrel is slightly faded below the cap line and the set was previously owned by E. LeGuyader. The owner imprint is small, professionally done, but there. For these reasons, the set is priced at $450.00, insured priority shipping included. Next: 1945 Parker 51 Double Jewel Pen and Pencil in yellowstone (more commonly mustard). Again, fully reconditioned and ready to write. The pen cap is the usual lined and spaced style and is flawless. The pen does have one very minor issue, but one that must be mentioned, around the hood, at the clutch are a seried of miniscule hairlines that are only barely visible when the pen is inked. They are stable and minor, but there. The pencil cap shows two very minor scratch points, more like rubs. This set is $550.00 Finally: 1942 Parker 51 single jewel Pen and Pencil in cedar (blue), near mint. What is special about this set is the caps. They are the scalloped and line first year caps with the correct imprint at the top of the cap. Gray plastic jewels, unfortunately. These caps are flawless. This set may be too nice to use, but it is fully reconditioned and ready to go to work. The set, $250.00. The usual applies, first firm commitment takes it. | |
| Southeast Pen Collectors' Club-NYC Pen Show | |
| 10/1/2001: Lee Chait | |
| The NYC Pen Show was a major event under less than ideal conditions. Sponsored by Krone, a large number of other manufacturers were also present. The highlights of the Show included a great Krone exhibit of historical pens and their owners; the Platinum sponsored Maki-e-Urushi artists from Japan; and the Juvenile Diabetes auction which raised over $35,000. Club member Scott Woodside, Platinum Pens reported a sellout of items available for sale. Several pieces that were done at the Show were auctioned off and contributed to the final total. These same artists will be at Bertram's in the DC area and at our own Jimmy Dolive's Total Office Products later this week. If you have the chance you should certainly try and see these fine artists do their work. By in large the Show was a sellout. Cancellations and no shows were few. The NY Show is not cheap but you can certainly enjoy yourself and take advantage of the enormous amount of entertainment; sightseeing and fine dining that is readily available. The attendance was acceptable under the circumstances. Having lived in NY for 25+ years I can tell you that vacant parking lots on Friday and Saturday evening as well as no lines at the finer restaurants is unheard of but that is what we saw. People simply aren't ready to resume their normal lives despite the urging of the Mayor and others. We did what we could for the economy before, during and after the Show. The auction was very well done by Allen Gross and conducted more professionally than many others I've attended over the past 3 years. There were some good buys to be had and it was all for a good cause. I bought four items: ate one (a $100 gift certificate for $70); sold one (a B&E Blue Ice pen bought for $150); and kept 2 which was one each of the Parker Duofold and 51 airplanes bought for an average of $210. My sales were limited to pens under $200. My purchases were limited but included 3 of the T-1 pieces; a 75 BP with an opal; a 75 Ecorse BP; an early NIB 75 Sterling. I opted to stay at a nearby Marriott some 400 feet from the Hilton. The pricing at the Hilton was about as well as you're going to do in NYC. As some of the exhibitors found out you can sacrifice your safety and well-being by cutting your lodging costs too much. Mr. Robert Kronenberger of Krone Pens reportedly has given the ok to start planning for the 2002 Show based on what he personally saw and liked this year. We all came away with some great hats compliments of the sponsor. Maryann and Steve undertook a great task but managed to survive. They deserve a lot of credit for their efforts. Next up for me is Columbus and Terry Mawhorter was present at NY and is expecting another fine show. | |

| Not LE pens, but I think they made them for a few years only. In both gold palte, and silver. I think the retail was around $350 or so. Nice pens, and I might have bought a silver one, but they are on the small side for my taste. Bill | |

| Hey folks, I'm trying to find a porsche design ballpoint and rb (by farber castell) that went out of production a few years ago. I'm looking either for a black or gunmetal blue (they're buffed looking). Distinctive trait is an arched clip. Thanks! rebecca | |

| I would like some information on the modern Waterman "Day and Night" pens. I have a fountain pen in gold filled (gold plated?). Were these pens made in limited edition? What was the original list price, and how long were they made? Any info would be most appreciated. | |
