| Big Red and a MB lever fill
|
| |
10/31/2000: Gary |
|
Today I picked up a Sr. Duofold with 1 band. The original nib was
cracked and the owner replaced it with a parker arrow nib. I have used
the pen all day and it is great, i wonder why I buy new and some LE's
when vintage is where it is at. What a classic and straightforward pen.
How big of deal is it if the nib/feed are not original and if i decide
to replace, what is the cost
Also picked up a MB lever filler #2 from 1922-1924 with org. nib ,
hard rubber and oxidized as you would expect. Here is the killer, it has
no cap.
Can i complete the deal - does anyone have a cap for this pen they would
like to sell?
I have not dipped the pen yet, but will do so soon. It has a flex nib
I may be through with new pens and only deal with vintage pens.

Thanks Steve and Stephen. Many new pen issues, LE's and regular production are beautiful works of art, but to me there is nothing more "enduring" than an "endurable" vintage design that can "endure" style and design variations over the years. Hmmm, can only guess whats down the road for Conklin.
How about that Conway-Stewart Churchill? Anyone get their hands on this pen? |

10/30/2000: Stephen Lam |

I am a Conklin nozac lover. On the alt.collecting pen-pencil newsgroup this subject was raised recently. You may wish to check the opinions expressed there. I am not really surprised to note that the new Nozac is made by Visconti as we also have the crescent resurrected by the same company. One good thing about such reissues is they will probably make pen collectors treasure the vintage versions they have more. |

New Conklins look great! It is Rob Rosenberg's baby and he has a great background in fountain pens. This appears to be just the start in bringing back a great brand in pen history. Rob acknowledges a lot more on the drawing board, but he would rather suprise us.
Rob will be at the Ohio Pen Show (late Saturday or Sunday) so stop by and say hello and take a look for yourself. |

| Nib Separation
|
| |
10/30/2000: Bob H. |
|
Mike,
I'm not sure I understand what is separating. If the tines of the nib move apart when pressure is applied and snap back together under no pressure, then you have a flexible pen nib. Its not only not broken, but very desirable to some collectors.
If the nib is separating from the section, or the tines are moving in some other way, I've got no idea.
While everyone seems to have a fascination with flex and super-flex nibs, my feeling is that most people, especially folks without some background with flexible nibs are much better off with rigid but smooth nibs. Flexible nibs are difficult to control. Getting them to flex is no trick; keeping them from flexing when you don't want extra line width is the trick. Its not a hard thing to do, but it seems to require sufficient practice.
If a downstroke with light pressure ( think ink on the paper, not ink in the paper) isn't noticabhly thinner than a downstroke with firm pressure (say the amount of pressure needed to get anything out of a BiC) then you may have sprung the nib with too much pressure.
Still, it sounds like a flex nib.
take Care,
Bob H. |

The NJ pen show was held in Somerset NJ this past weekend. Although Saturday was alittle slow, it gave all the dealers a good chance to buy , sell and trade with each other. Sunday drew the usual good attendance with an even flow of sales throughout the entire day. Bernie & Geoff proved as always to be excellent hosts for this event. The auction featured some great pens including a waterman 20 and prices seemed to be average to high. All in all, a great show and alot of fun !! |

Speaking of Esterbrooks, I will have a number of very rare Esterbrooks available at the Columbus Show. These will include rare colors from the early '30s, a '30s demonstrator of which only three are known, and two mint English "Relief" models, one with sticker. Also have more typical Esterbrooks, desk sets and nibs. Any unsold at the show will be available online later. |

First, Mr. Gnoza has again backedup my positive attitude about Esterbrook products. I wish I had one of the inkwells of which you speak, sir. I do have one Esterbrook desk set, kind of a rare one, round flat teal ceramic base with teal pen. Another thing...I am gaining more and more of these named no name pens. Like the Eastman I mentioned before. I have a Viceroy with a perfect clip and very detailed filler lever. I never hear about these in the pen books, which seem to only care about the fancy ones. Anyone know of a good book out there that would tell me aobut these odd but seemingly quality pens? |

| Re: First Practical Self-Filler
|
| |
10/29/2000: George. |
|
Dave wrote about the Conklin as the first practical self-filling fountain pen with a rubber sac or bladder, but there is an earlier self-filler that predates it. I'm not claiming that it is the first commercially successful self-filler, since most collectors would have heard of it if it were. But the first patent for a pen that specifies that it has a rubber sac is a patent from Sept 19, 1848, which states, in part, that it has "a bag or chamber . . . made of gum elastic", the current word then for "rubber". |

| Parker Slimfold, with 45-style cap.
|
| |
10/29/2000: Bruce Robinson |
|
I bought a dark-blue English Parker Slimfold yesterday, but it is not like the normal style pictured on the WWW. It is labelled "Slimfold" in faint white paint on the barrel, but has nothing stamped into the barrel. The cap lip has Parker, Made in England, and the arrow/ellipse logo.
The main difference is the cap. It has a GF-tassie with a conical dish, and a 7-chevron clip. Both appear identical to those on the Parker 45. The screw-on cap has a GF band forming a relatively bulky cap edge with a 45 degree champfer, not the flat band 5mm back from the edge as in the Slimfold's pictured on the web. I have seen one cap-edge like this on a plastic-cap English Parker 45. The pen's dimensions are: length capped 12.3 cm, barrel width max 1.0 cm, barrel to nib-tip 11.2 cm. The small nib is engraved "Parker, 14k, 585, England, 10"
Has anyone got any suggestions as to how to identify this "Slimfold". Thanks

| Visconti Traveling Inkpot vs. Pelikan Souveran 1000
|
| |
10/28/2000: Chuck Kim |
|
I'm wondering if anyone's had any experience using one of Visconti's Traveling Inkpots with the Pelikan Souveran 1000 series of pens.
I love my Traveling Inkpots and find that I use little else when filling... but I'm wondering if the 1000 will fit. I understand that it's got a larger barrel diameter than the 800 series (which I love and which fits quite well into my Traveling Inkpot) but haven't been able to find a shop with a 1000 in stock so that I could take a clean Inkpot to check for fit.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. |
| Pencil Leads for Parker 51

To Sam McAllister: I think those are just 0.9 mm leads which are still used by modern pencils, e.g Mont Blanc has put out new pencils using that kind of lead. I recently purchased a whole box of such leads made by Pentel and several Staedtler mechanical pencils using those leads. And I am living in a city with no pen shops, a real penlover's desert. So it should not be too difficult to find. |

| Dip pens and desk sets

|
My trusty Esterbrook DB427 twin inkwell deskset is used on a daily basis - loaded to the brim with 2 different inks that I change 3 or 4 times a year. The pens are Esterbrook Dip-less, one with a clear taper and one with a red taper. It's really a great set , as is the single well version the DB407. It's amazing the amount of ink the reservoirs hold and how long you can write with a single dip, as well as how nice they look sitting on a desk or sriting table. I have tried others but these Esterbrooks desksets are tough to beat. |

Want to thank everyone who answered me on the choise of ink...
Now to a new question. I'm new to BB's on the net, However I see a lot of discussion on Fountain pens. But, nothing on Dip Pens or the more modern Desk pen. I would be interested to hear anything anyone has to say on this subject.
I see some of the old dip pens are really beautiful. How do they write?
Are modern points (nibs) avilable to go with the old holders?
Enough for now.... I'll sit back and enjoy your comments |

10/27/2000: Steve Johnson |
|
On the 25th, I posted a question about "slow" pens. I have received one suggestion off channel and two others posted. I appreciate everyone's help. One of you asked if I was referring to new or old pens and I should have had the foresight to mention that it was new pens with which I have experienced this problem. A Krone Vintage Stretch was the most exasperating. Someone on Zoss suggested I place a drop of liquid detergent on a piece of paper and write through it for several minutes and that seemed to take care of them problem. The only thing strange now is that although the pen write immediately, the ink appears darker for the first few words. I suppose I'll have to live with that.
Again, thanks all. |

| Eastman Pen
|
| |
10/27/2000: Mike |
|
On Ebay about a year ago, I bought this simply hugiferous marbled green pen that is called an Eastman. It is the largest pen in my collection, bigger than the big Shaffer Balance I bought recently. It is a flat top. It easily took a big 20 bladder. The filler lever is actually marked "filler." I cannot write with it, though, as the nib is simply worn to death. Either that or it is the most flexible nib I have ever seen. Has anyone around here heard of the breand or even own one of these monsters? I would really like to know more about it. |

| First Practical Self Filler
|
| |
10/27/2000: Dave Glass |
|
Dave R. See p. 227 of the same Fishler & Schneider blue book
for confirmation that Conklin's crescent-filler indeed predates
the Waterman sleeve filler by at least a decade. I think you are
correct to infer that F&S was referring to the sleeve filler as just Waterman's
first sac pen and practical non-eyedropper. Incidentally the
Mch 17, 1891 patent date shown on early Conklin pens refers to a
sac filler, but one actually activated by a lever. The 1901 Conklin
patent describes the crescent-filler, which is widely recognized as
the first practical and commercially successful self filler, as you
note. Regards, Dave Glass (Crescentpens) |
| Comments
|
| |
10/26/2000: Dave Rossow |
|
In the "Blue Book", first edition, F&S state on page 18 that the Waterman sleeve filler was the "first practical non-eyedropper filled pen" and that production began in 1910. Perhaps I'm reading this wrong, but wasn't Conklin, and maybe others as well, making practical self-filling pens for at least a decade before this? Fischler and Schneider also mention that this marked the introduction of two items that were to become fountain pen standards: the ink sac and the pressure bar. Conklin was using ink sacs and had a pressure bar, though not a J-type (sprung bar) for years. Could it be that this marked Waterman's first use of these items rather than an absolute first, or could the dates listed be incorrect?
While I'm at it, I recently acquired a black standard Parker 51 pen and pencil set, but need a hood for the pen. If anyone has one available please let me know.
Thanks,
Dave |
| Slow Pen
|
| |
10/26/2000: Bill Stevens |
|
Michael is right that your slow pen is probably caused by something that is inhibiting the capillary action. He suggests that it might be due to slits cut improperly. Another possibility could be with the feed, ranging from dirt or dried ink causing a problem, to a feed that needs to be replaced or reworked. You didn't say if your pen is new or old, but in either case I would start by soaking the nib for a while in some water with a smidge of 409 in it to see if that does anything. Also try changing ink and see if that helps. Those are the two simplest first aid procedures. If they don't work, send it back to the manufacturer, or take it to a good repairman. I have been very happy with Jerry Trafford's work on getting feeds to flow just how I want. I hope that helps. -- Bill |
| Slow Pen
|
| |
10/25/2000: Michael |
|
The answer to you problem could one of sveral possible ones. However, most likely it is an improperly ground nib. The nib's slit must be parallel all the way to the very tip of the irridium. It seems that quite a few modern nibs' slits are not perfectly parallel right to the tip, causing the capillary action that causes ink to flow down the slit and onto the peper to stop. If your pen starts again with a mild shake or some additional pressure on the paper, that's the likely cause. The fix? Send it back to the manufacturer for a new nib. It is ever so likely that all the nib adjusting in the world won't cure that particular problem. ~Michael~ |

What causes a pen to be "slow" to start. I have experienced this problem with several pens, mostly with medium nibs. It happens on straight lines when I lift the pen from the paper. Once it starts, it will continue to write as long as I don't lift it.

Hello.
Don't post here often, but see many familiar names :-)
I had not expected to attend, but now it seems I mite be at the Ohio show.
I seek a "late" parker vac catalog to borrown/photocopy etc. The one I need (or several) should be from the 1942-1947 "single jewel vac" era. The material is for a pamphlet I'm putting together on this series of pen. Any help appreciated. "thank you" happily placed in the book and expenses paid. So far have over 100 pens nicely photographed fro the book. Slow progress, but fun project. And, of course, if folks have "interesting and scarce" vacumatics available at somewhat reasonable prices- I'd be interested.
Thanks much.

About a month ago I posted a message saying that I would be offering a number of high quality pens (mainly Wahl and Carter duplicates from my collection) and that these would soon be pictured on a web page. I also said that I would have those that remained unsold available at the Columbus show. The response to that was tremendous (many emails). However, In my effort to support the Columbus show, I have decided to reverse that plan and offer everything at the show first, and the remnants online later. Also a note to cookie monsters... for the last three years, as PenLovers, I have had superb homemade (not by me) cookies at the show Sat. am. Penlovers is doing the pizza party this year but I will, as an individual, do the cookie thing again. See you all there! |

Raymond, as the condensation is inside the ink bottle, why don't you shake the bottle to mix it with the rest of the ink. That should make sure the consistency will be, eh "consistent". If you put your ink bottle indoors and away from the sun, I don't think you need to worry about evaporation and thickening.

I've checked the schedule this time: no readings or cooking demonstrations are planned! Time will be 3:00 - like usual - and let's try bringing the prettiest plastic pens you own. Who cares if they write like un-polished nails? For this event, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, as opposed to the writer. And if you have something new you want to brag about, bring it along, too.

| Old Ink
|
| |
10/23/2000: Raymond Wong |
|
While we are talking about old ink. I noticed that there is water condensed on the cap of ink bottles after sitting for a while. This I supposed would make the ink thick. I sometimes put distilled water to dilute it again but the result is not good. The ink got watery and has to sit for a long time before getting back to normal. Should I just forget about diluting it? Any thoughts? |
| Old Ink - Parker

10/23/2000: Stephen Lam |

I have a number of large bottles of Parker ink in the rather sexy tall bottles. I bought them about 15 years ago after they languish in the bottle drawer of a stationery store. I have been using them since. The turquoise colour is exquisite. |

Allan - Many old inks are very safe to use. Skrip seems to have survived the years well.
Check it for odd odors, make sure there isn't sediment in the bottom of the bottle or anything else
floating around in there that shouldn't be! Sometimes the color of old inks will "turn", so if your black ink is
sort of grey-ish or not as black as it should be, keep it in the bottle. I use old inks all the time, some 75 years old and have never had a problem, but I'm sure to check them first. == Sam |

Allan, I hear that vintage Sheaffer inks are fine to use, I have a 32oz next to me, tip over to look at the bottom of the bottle, no sentiments, I mean sediments, :) use it in any pens. Frank Dubiel swears by Sheaffer inks, never had a problem. If you ever see muck, sludge or thick coatings on the bottom of sides of bottle, dump it. |

10/22/2000: Will Thorpe |
|
Hong Kong, 25 years ago, after dark, I bought a Pelikan from a dealer. Not want the box and not wanting to carry a bag I stuck the pen in my pocket. On seeing that the dealer wanted to know if I'd like to fill the pen. Sure I said. He pulls out this cadboard box that must have had two dozen bottles of different color of Carter's ink, all in the art deco boxes, from the 1920's or 30's I guess. Yes, I filled the pen, no I never thought for a second about buying the ink. I'm a lot smarter now though! |

I've kind of hesitated to jump in here, ink is the kind of personal thing that starts arguements. First I agree with Sam. Experiment. I have no expertise in ink but I have been using ink for over 47 years. I wrote for a living, daily, for over 20 years, and I used a lot of ink. I still write daily and I still use ink. The ink, the pen, the nib, the paper, ink consistency, and the pressure you apply all have a bearing on your like and dislike for ink. I just bought some Bexley Lapis Blue from Sam at the last show. In an Omas medium nib wet writer it flowed like a fire hose. However in my 1932 Sheaffer fine point it flows a lot less, and it comes in a nice art deco bottle. Absolutely great color, has a touch of purple to it. Some inks, especially black, feel rough to me. I hardly touch the paper with a pen so the lighter colors don't always suit me. I'm partial to brown such as Waterman's Havana and especially like Pelikan brown. Pelken ink feels very slick to me. I like the way Pelikan flows. I also like OMAS Blue but can't stand the bottle design. I bought some purple from Colorado Pen Company (store label) that is pretty vivid and doesn't lay down a weak line. OK, so what I've said, for what it's worth, is experiment, try several colors, be bold. I've never had a pen damaged from ink but for vintage pens be careful. Red hard rubber can stain with ease. |
| Ink Experiment

10/22/2000: Raymond Wong |
|
Thanks to all the comments about ink. I once did an experiment with ball point inks. I wrote them on a sheet of paper and taped it on my office window for maximum exposure to sunlight. After weeks some of the writing totally disappeared due to exposure. I have not tried with fountain pen ink because I cannot get too many different brands. Perhaps someone can try and let us know. |

I agree with Waco Johnny D that most modern pen parts will stand up to any ink. The only hesitations I would have are using extremely intense ink, like purple, in a light colored pen, like an OMAS Biblioteque; and also some people say that you should use only OMAS ink in their "vegetal resin" pens because other inks will cause it to break down over time. I don't know if I buy that or not, but I do use OMAS ink in OMAS pens. |

Raymond,
Don't sweat it. Today's FP
components, including the sacs,
which are now
made of latex (i.e. man-made) rubber, will stand up
to just about anything. The only
situation that would warrant concern,
IMHO, would be the use of old
valuable dip-pen nibs made of
NON-stainless steel. |

With all the choices of ink brands
and ink colors now available,
choosing a favorite ink (if you're
so inclined to choose only one!)
has become a very personal thing.
My favorite blue may not be be appealing to you
. Further, not all inks perform the
same way in all pens. Even narrowing it down more, different colors of inks made by the same manufacturer can flow totally different.
It takes a bit of experimenting
to find out which of your pens
writes best with which ink. Pen collectors who are on the internet and frequent the pen discussion boards seem to have a big influence on what
your favorite ink might be! If you polled this group today on their favorite blue ink, I'd wager that the overwhelmeing answers would be OMAS Roma 2000 or Bexley Ocean Blue. But if you had polled them a year ago, the overwhelming choice would have been Aurora blue! And to further complicate and influence this is the demise of Penman Sapphire which has sent blue users scurrying for a comparable blue! Just remember that not all inks are created equally and you'll have to find the "perfect" colors for you! ===Sam

Harold.....inks are now half the fun of using fountain pens these days. A few years ago your choices were very limited. Suddenly there is an explosion of colors available, and certainly some precautions with a few intense colors and reactions to WHITE pens, CLEAR ink vue sections or demonstartors. You can find perhaps a dozen shades of blue from brilliant to subtle, and many inks can even be altered to your own custom colors by adding a drop or two (always write down your lab procedures). Be sure to visit Avalon (see ad banners here)and Pendemonium for some of the most elaborate ink choices you've ever seen. |

Harold, I have used Parker, Sheaffers, Pelikan, Montlanc, Cross, Hero and a few other brands over the last 20 years. I think there is not much difference unless you prefer certain colours offered only by certain manufacturers. I now go for the most easily available ink in my neighbourhood. My experience tells me that ink is colour water. Some may have proprietory additives (which most of us don't understand anyway) but at the end of the day, the most important factors are colours and availability. |

| 1928 Parker Duofold Monoplane
|

10/21/2000: Len Provisor |
|
The Ohio Pen Show is the last show of the year for me to display this great replica model. Next and final delivery of these models won't be until approx. Feb. after 12/31/00 deadline for final orders.
First shipment is due in a few more days, and deliveries will be starting shortly.
To give you an idea of how big and powerful this Monoplane was back in 1928, here's a comparison to another Parker aircraft in 1946.
The 410 hp Duofold airspeed was 140 mph, the '46 aircraft with twin 450 hp engines cruised at 150 mph, max speed of 219 mph. Duofold range was 900 miles, the '46 model 1,140. Duofold maximum altitude was 19,500', the '46 model was 18,200. Main reason: the Duofold was metal tubing, wood and canvas, weighing in at only several hundred pounds. The '46 model with same wingspan of about 50' was 9,300 pounds. The 1946 model is likely to be my next aircraft in the Series of Vintage Parker Aircraft. Very few people have seen this plane since the 1950's, and I can tell you it had an incredible Deco Parker decoration. Sorry, don't ask.....introduction pictures not until January. Come see the Duofold Fairchild FC2W2 Monoplane at the Ohio Pen Show. |

Hi fellow Penlovers some great pen shows coming up soon in rapid succession. First up is the National Pen show in Somerset, N.J. October 27-29, 2000 this promises to be a great show with lots of tables of pens and a great auction. Some of the auction items are posted on the National Pen show site for preview. I will unfortunately not be able to attend this show as I will be in the middle of a cross country move from Cleveland, OH to the Seattle area of Washington. All of my email and contact information will be changing soon but I will be sure to post it here when it happens. The next show next show up is the 6th Annual Ohio Pen Show, November 2-5, 2000 in Columbus, Ohio. The Ohio show will be another show that you won’t want to miss, tons of dealers both vintage and modern, a great pizza party on Friday night sponsored by Penlovers, the desert party on Saturday night that show organizers Terry and Sonya put on, plus an auction and various seminars throughout the weekend make this show a great event. Penlovers will have a table at the Ohio show so come on by, say Hi, and grab one of the new Penlovers blotters. You can find more information on these and other shows by clicking the Pen shows button to the left and following the links to their sites. |

Some fountain pen repairs require you heat the instrument - mainly to get glued, shellaced or stubborn sections out of a barrel. The old timers prefer an open flame - what a pretty flame is give off by a celluloid pen when it catches fire !!!
I use a Wagner Power Stripper Plus Hot Air Paint Removal Tool that I
bought refurbished for $20 from http://www.heartlandamerica.com/site.asp
It has a heat control knob that lets you adjust the heat from 350F to
1000F degrees and it has a wire stand that lets you rest it upright so
you can hold the pen over it with both hands.

| Merlin Pen Information
|
| |
10/18/2000: Penstop |
|
Hi Bob:
I hope this information helps you. After the end of World War II most of Europe having been ravaged by the war, most countries could not produce their own fountain pens. This small company, Merlin, was a prime example of this plight. The pen was marketed to the Benelux community. It was produced in Germany, as were 20 other bands marketed in that part of the world following the end of the war. As to which company produced this pen, no one can really put a handle on that. The characteristics of these pens included their great colors, blends of color, reliablity and most importantly pricing. As for the flexibility of the nib, I generally need to put some pressure to achieve a varied line thickness using a flex nib. Great little pen. |

Marcus, Sometimes it helps if you can find a wood dowel the exact same size as the
barrel and insert it further into the barrel as it starts to
straighten - the dowel has to be a tight fit so the barrel does not
warp. |

To quote Cranky Frankie " what a dumb question - it's all in "da Book"....LOL. Markus what I do is heat the barrel with a paint stripping gun ( same one I use to loosen sections when they are glued or shellaced into the barrel ). While it's warm roll it on a flat surface - a workbench with a smooth mat on it to prevent it from getting "dented" from being rolled on a textured surface ( the bare wood of the work bench). I have probably done 5 pens using this method over the past year and it's worked everytime without fail. The secret is not to get the barrel hot - warm will do - it does not take much heat at all. Good luck |

What is going on with Parker? I have noticed what seems to me to be some steep discounting in the prices of the Duofold line and even some rebates offered. And it seems that the Sonnet line has been severely curtailed. Parker has reworked their logo an their recent product editions are the low cost Reflex and the mid range Inflection. Contrast this with Parker's Gillette/Newell Rubbermaid stablemate Waterman, which has recently introduced the high end Liason and Serenite. Is Parker going to stay in the high-end pen business? |

Marcus.....you have a Duofold, Jr. Banana, even if it is not Mandarin.
Not much you can do except find a replacement barrel. With much thinner barrel pens that mnay be warped, there is a process. |

I bought one of these pens on Ebay last year because I thought they were interesting. They are very common. They are not connected with Rolex and they are not sterling silver. They do look like silver and do tarnish. I understand they are manufactured in Israel. You should not pay more than $15 for one. GOOD LUCK. |

going on. If someone would like to share their technique...

I guess that everyone has their own "intelligence resources". Anyhow, I just spoke with my Waterman representative, who re-confirmed, for the third time, that all Waterman Edson models have been discontinued. For those who want a special nib (stub, etc.) Waterman does offer an exchange within 30 days after purchase, if you are unhappy with the nib that came with the pen; as long as, it is not damaged. I have a handful of Edson's left (Blue: 3 FP, Ruby Red: 10 FP, 2 RB, Green: 1 RB, 1BP). |

Hi,
I just asked a dealer friend, and he said that the 20 ct. nib was due to a demand for "softer" nibs. I don't know how much difference there is between a 18 and 20 ct. nib though. Anyhow, both types are correct and factory original nibs.

I have a Toledo M900 and indeed the nib is 20ct two tone. I will let the more experienced and well researched collectors to comment on whether that is what the pen should come with. In the real world of retail business, it is quite possible for some M900 toledos to be sold with 18ct two tone nibs. They are of the same size and outlook and totally interchangeable. If the manufacturer or the dealer, wishing to make use of whatever materials/spare parts available, put together a M900 Toledo with a 18ct two tone nib, I will consider it a sensible move. I doubt if anybody can say, with authority, whether what you have is a marriage or a non-genuine M900 Toledo. |

Hi,
I believe the 20 ct. nib was made only for certain markets, Asia I think. You might also see 12 ct. nibs for the smaller pens. Production of these seems to have stopped now though.

Pen loving people .... I have a mystery to be solved. I recently purchased a Pelikan M900 Gold Toledo from a very respectful dealer. The nib in the pen was an 18K two-tone. Yet when I research this same pen in the book "FOUNTAIN PENS - History & Design" by Giorgio Dragoni & Giuseppe Fichera (Big Sheaffer Nib on Cover) I find on Page 164 they state the nib unique to this pen should be a 20C two-tone nib. They further reference this nib as one of the unique features of the Toledo. Pelikan experts please advise ... is the book right and the dealer wrong; or is the dealer correct and the book wrong?? |

The Ohio Show is now just a few weeks away. As of today we have filled all 102 tables in the grand ballroom on Sunday. Like last year, we have begun assigning tables in the foyer and so far have four exhibitors out there. If you have never attended our show you might wonder what the "mix" is between vintage and modern. As of this moment it's 80% vintage and 20%modern. If your looking for new pens, don't worry they will be there piled high and at great prices. Our auction is coming along and we will have some photos up on our website www.ohiopenshow.com in a few days. The Marriott has added some rooms to our block and will accept your reservations at the pen show rate of $87 up to the 19th. Call 1-800-228-3429. Call me at 740-454-2314 or email with questions. |

Several people have been looking for my missing discount Waterman pen site. A friend of mine was hosting the site
on his server. However, his server fees recently doubled (actually nearly
tripled), and he chose to discontinue his server subscription.
Unfortunately, he forgot to download a complete copy of the site before
cancelling his subscription -- and forgot to make a back-up before upgrading
his computer system. Aaarrrggghhh! I am now in the process of learning
HTML (in my copious free time), and am redoing all the pics and scans to
create a new site. When eventually I have it done (hopefully 3-4 weeks), it
will be at the following URL: www.aflane.com. |

If you happen to be in Southern California on November 10th or 11th you may want to pay a visit to The Fountain Pen Shop and its ***SEVENTY-NINTH*** Pen Fair. That’s right, this store has been around for 79 years and has the 3rd generation owner, Fred Krinke, at the helm. Fred’s display of vintage pens is worth a visit when you are in the area, not to mention his inventory of pen parts. Meet representatives from the major pen companies and test-out their new wares. Many vintage pen collectors will be in attendance and will have pens for sale, too.
This event will be on Friday the 10th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday the 11th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The store is at 2640 South Myrtle Avenue #12, Monrovia, CA. Oh yes, here will be drawings for door prizes. I will have some of the PCA lapel pens for sale, at $5 each while I’m there.

Fred is a PenLovers' member and will probably post more information as we come closer to the event. |

On 11/17/00 between 11am-4pm, TOTAL OFFICE PRODUCTS at 2740 Cumberland Parkway, Smyrna Ga. will host its annual Pen Fair. 770-434-8677 or 1-888-867-7367
Jimmy Dolive sells many lines of pens (Aurora, Conway Stewart, Delta, Krone, Montegrappa, Namiki, Omas, Parker, Pelikan, Sheaffer, Viconti, and Waterman among others) and representatives from most or all of them will be present to show off new pens; answer questions; share knowledge and experience.
I have therefore made an executive decision and changed the date of the Southeast Pen Collectors' Club Meeting for Nov. to the 17th. It was previously scheduled for the 5th of Nov. which was the same weekend as the Ohio Pen Show.
As Jimmy Dolive/James Wong and many others were attending the Show we would have had to change our meeting location. There wil be a short meeting at 3pm at the TOP Pen Fair. The 12/3 meeting and auction remain unchanged and will also be at TOP at 2pm on 12/3. |

It is not possible to "remove" discoloration. If you break a
discolored barrel into two, you will find that the discoloration goes deep into the
material. Any surface applied material will not be able to reverse the discoloration
process. Don't buy a discolored pen and hope to restore it to its original glory. |

Feed store and vet supply stores sell needles and syringes. Just punch in
things like horse wormer, vet supply, farrier products, equine vaccine on an internet
serch and all kinds of dealers will pop up. You're talking less than a dollar for a
syringe and a couple of needles. Size 18, 20 or 22 works fine, get 1.5 inch needles so
they reach to the bottom of the bottle. Please recognize that when you push the plunger on
the syringe the ink comes out with a lot of force and fills a cartridge real quick (read
this again). |

Inks are such a personal thing, and lots of electrons get burned on this
board and others giving contrasting opinions. I will give my choices, for what they are
worth: Black: Aurora (only kind I buy); Blue - lots of options. Quink is my favorite, but
I also use Omas Roma 2000 (feathers) and Aurora (never dries). Red: Sheaffer or Delta, but
I only use it to edit papers. The other advice is that you can get a sampler from sam at
www.Pendemonium.com or (I think) from AnneMarie at www.inkpalette.com Good luck! Ross |

If one is on friendly terms with one's Doc one can get the syringes for
free. I sand off the sharp tip (make it blunt) with 220 grit sandpaper to prevent a clumsy
movement from being an "ouch, now I have a spot tatoo moment". FYI-needle gauge
sizing-smaller # bigger diameter opening/ bigger # smaller diameter opening. I found that
16,18 or 20 gauge needles fill the syringe quickly with little effort. |

Here in Iowa (but apparently not everywhere) you can go to a pharmacy and
buy (very cheaply) disposable plastic hypodermic needles intended for use by diabetics, I

to last years. |

Speaking as a dealer who exhibits at most of the shows, what we don't
need is another show ! Most of the shows this year were not sucessful for the exhibitors
or the promoters. To put on a modest show means signing on the dotted line for about
20,000.00. If the show fails, your losses are quite high. I worked on the Orlando show and
believe me most promoters get less than minimum wage for the hours put in. PS, the
Colorado Pen scare was just that, a rumor. That doesn't mean they're not in trouble, but
the bankruptcy scare was nothing more than a rumor. Goodnight pen pals, Allen Gross |

I found the cute girly behind the counter nice to look at, the knowledge of the staff is
definitely less than a pen specialist owned by the operator. I live in Atlanta and find
the people at Artlite, and The Franklin Co up in Ellijay to be the best around. Both their
shops are very nice, and the staffs are friendly. I wanted to ask if anyone can recommend
a good shop in Chicago? I will be down town in a week and would like to check out
something new. K.C. |

Len, thanks for the suggestions and advice. I tend to agree that we can
not do a national show at this stage of the game. THere are enough out there right now and
folks are complaining about the numbers dropping for each of the big shows. I would hope
that we could in the future. I also agree that timing is everything! I don't want to add
another show that is going to line up against another and add one more show that folks are
unable to attend. However, the American Contract Bridge League believed, using similar
reasons, that a National event would not be well attended if held in NM. It was held, it
had a VERY respectable drawing. NOpe, it did not top CHicago or Denver or LA, but we did
had 10,000 tables at the event. Any event takes a good deal of planning, strong
sponsorship and commitment from the community to attend. I think we can do it and I think
we can do it with NM style and flare. They don't call it "The Land of
Enchantment" for nothing! I just don't believe that Arizona is a better location and
I would like to try one here. Perhaps "The Rocky Mountain Regional Pen Show".
Don't miss out on an opportunitity to get in on the ground floor! :-) We have your table
reserved, Len! |

Elaine asked on 10/8 about finding cartridges in her favorite colors. One
strategy is to buy bottled ink in your favorite color, which is often easier to find, and
refill the empty cartridges using an eye dropper or a hypodermic. I've found that ink is
cheaper by the bottle. I recommend fountain pens, especially the older ones with the
flexible nibs, to those of us who suffer wrist problems due to computer use. It is much
easier to produce a dark, readable line without bearing down using a FP. (Any excuse to
buy a vintage pen!) PS, I love this site! |

Ok ok ok ok ok . Albuquerque or Santa Fe is a no brainer drop-dead
gorgeous place to be in the springtime. Or anytime for that matter. I'm from Illinois, I
visited a few years ago, I'll go back in the drop of a Santa Fe taco. But remember, you
can build a local show, don't think for a minute you'll get traffic enough to draw a
national show. Somewhere in the middle Rocky Mountain area is room for a good local show.
Dallas' recent local show, I hear from Sam F. was a great show, The Las Vegas event I hear
is nice, but is awkwardly timed with other national shows. Between Denver, AZ and TX you
can do it. Albq. would be the logical place as a convenient fly-in, with a mandatory side
trip to Neal and Violet Frank's Santa Fe Pens on the high plateau, who, I bet would be
more than happy to host an open house with lots of free food, gifts, samples and
entertainment. Problem is, once there it would be very very difficult to leave. Yes, a
local show in Albq/Santa Fe would be a great idea. I'd go in a minute. But pick your
timing very carefully. |

Chuck and Dean, I live in So. California and have done business with two
branches of the Colorado Pen Company. After buying a few pens from them, at retail prices,
I discovered Fountain Pen Hospital, The Fountain Pen Shop, and Swisher Pens. I happened to
mention to the manager of the CPC Costa Mesa store that I was buying pens at MUCH BETTER
PRICES than CPC offerred, they said they would match the prices. They couldn't even come
close to Swisher prices! They told me to buy my Edson from Swisher, which I did. I was in
the CPC store last Friday and saw a really nice Dupont. When they began to pressure me to
buy it, I said I'd have to check the prices elsewhere--I knew I could get AT LEAST 20%
off. CPC offerred me 10% if I "bought it today." No way! |

Allan, you live in Albuquerque! IS there some thing wrong with this state
that makes you want to travel several hundred miles, not be able to find a hotel room at a
reasonable rate and send both money and traffic there. I think some might disagree, I am
one of those! I would certainly be willing to help organize an event in NM where we have
both the space, some VERY knowledgeable collectors, significant help from the Chamber, the
Tourist Department (I know the Cabinet Secretary), good entertainment, the BEST MEXCIAN
FOOD in the US, skiing, Native Americans, less traffic, the Balloon Fiesta (ok, so it's
not in February), Santa Fe, and did I mention the BEST MEXICAN FOOD NORTH OF THE BORDER!
Golf. And, if you don't like ALbuquerque, then we can do Las Cruces! |

Bruce, I'm sorry to hear this about the Colorado Pen store in Norfolk.
However, to be honest I'm really a little surprised they have lasted this long. Since we
already had one good pen store in downtown Norfolk (Norfolk Stationery) that offers at
least some discounts on most of the same writing instruments carry, it was beyond me how
CPC thought they could sell everything at list price and survive in this area. Granted, I
don't get down to the mall very much, but both times I visited this store I was very
disapointed to find a very limited number of fountain pens available. The manager
explained to me that there is very little demand for fountain pens in this city and that
most of his customers are looking for MontBlanc ball points (this may explain why we get
so many calls for these pens :-). If they do go under (which I hope is only a rumour), you
should be able to find a decent selection of inks at Norfolk Stationery on Granby St (down
by the Waterfront). If not, give us a call and we will make arrangements to have some
delivered. Best regards, Chuck Swisher at cspens@mindspring.com Swisher Pens, Inc.

Email me for directions if you're in the Atlanta area and you can come to
our Club meeting 11/5 2pm at Jimmy Dolive's Total Office Products near the Cumberland Mall
at I-285 and Hwy 41. About 10-15 us wil bein Colmbus fo rhte Ohio show that day but there
will be about 20-30 people to make you feel welcome (and eventually get some dues out of
your for a yearly membership). One of the top repair people in the country, Rick Horne, is
generally at every meeting. I've just got a solid gold Presidential 75 that looks like it
just came out of the box back from him after havng several dents taken out and hte tassies
changed. We have a Club auction on December 3. Next to going to a pen show you can't beat
the information you'll obtain at the meetings from both long time pen collectors and also
beginners who started in the past year or two as you are. I myself started in 8/98. I
started buying every Parker in sight but then started narrowing my focus to limited areas
and have settled in on the Parker 75's and most recently the Premiers; Modern Duofolds;
Dispoaly cases and Parker advertising items- sales kits; individual advetising pens any
vintage; signs; ephemera; etc. I have a few vacs left for sale and some early duofolds but
generally stick to my specific areas of interest. I'll look for a LL refill for you in
Columbus but few of them are still writing. Good Luck. |

Ken, fountain pens can be a fascinating hobby. First, ask youself what is
it about pens that have caught your attention. Most collectors have a focus that appeals
to them, be it vintage pens in certain colors, brands or periods of manufacture such as
the deco period of the 1920's, Wahl Dorics with their disctinctive barrel shapes and
colors. Perhaps it is just the end result of using a fountain pen, such as creating a nice
script in calligraphy, seeing the form and shape of italics from a broad oblique stub nib,
or even a vintage Copperplate typestyle. I would suggest...attend as many pen shows as you
are able, look at everything of interest, ask a million questions, scour the web for pen
links that can give you invaluable information. Look for other pen collectors in your area
to share your hobby. Most pen sites such as Penlovers, has a source link page, visit as
many as you can. Fountain Pen Hospital is a good source for many books on fountain pens.
Once you have an idea of direction, go to a pen show and start chasing those treasures.
Remember, foutain pens are also made to be used, restore them and enjoy the pleasures of
letter writing. have fun hunting, and let us know how you fare. |

Why not develop a pen show in Tucson in March or April? The city is less

The major problem with a Phoenix Show in Feb. would be a hotel at a
reasonable rate. While I can stay at the Marriott Camelback Resort for under $100 at
various times of the year, the price is triple that in Feb. which is a peak time in the
Phoenix area. There already is the very successful LA Show in Feb. and another western
show in the same month would increase travel and other expenses considerably for the
majority of the dealers who would be coming from the east. Fine with me though if someone
wants to undertake the task. I have several friends out there I'd like to see more often
that I do now. |

Krisi, I have worked on quite a few vintage Conway Stewarts made from
casien plastic. It is actually harder than some other plastics, and I have yet to see a
broken or cracked pen. One thing you cannot do with a casein pen is soak it in water. It
is made from a milk byproduct and, will distort or disolve in water, if exposed to it for
a long enough period of time. So, I wouldn't stir my coffee with a Conway ;-) Conway makes
some of the most beautiful plastics out there. I wouldn't be at all worried about the
durability of these pens. I'm not too familiar with the new pens, but the old ones
generally have wonderfully smooth nibs. |

for in case you may bring them along, let me know. Unusual cap "51"s, barrel/cap
cut-outs and demonstrator pens, old advertising ink blotters with nice graphics, any
subject, ink blotter catalogs from blotter companies, Parker pen advertising ephemera, and
literature, vintage Americana writing equipment or accessories, especially wood cased ink
travelers from any ink or pen company. Early Americana soapstone carved inkwells, they
look like grey/blue soft stone, usually 2 1/2 - 3" square, crude hand cut. If you are
into old advertising ink blotters, let me know, I happen to have a few thousand for trade
or sale. What a fetish!! |

Hi all. I like fountain pens and I've got two of them, a Waterman Phileas
and the original Namiki Vanishing Point, both of which I ordered from Levenger. Their
catalog and web site have quite a variety of fountain pens by different manufacturers and
I like seeing what they have. Some companies I recognize, some I don't. I'm curious to
know how good Levenger brand fountain pens are, if any of you happen to know. A few
Levenger pen descriptions mention collaborations with other makers, so they apparently
don't make all of their pens by themselves. But they do have some at good prices, so I'm
interested in knowing how good they are. If you have comments about Levenger brand pens or
would like to suggest other names to look at, please let me know (preferably by e-mail
since I tend to forget to check web message boards). Thanks a lot. :) |

I have a fun Friday anecdote for everyone. The other day here at work, we
had a staff meeting and I had with me a little Sheaffer Fine Line, pink with a brass cap
to write with. It was really a cheapy I picked up as a set w/ a pencil, that I restored
myself. The older folks at the meeting just raved about it, how interesting and neat that
was that I wrote with a fountain pen. It carried them down memory lane as they recounted
using them in school back in the 50's. Amazing what even a cheap little pen like that
Fineline can do in the right place at the right time. |

Isn't that the same stuff Parker used for its pastel pens, the stuff
through which ink would bleed if you had a sac leak? I can't remember where I read it, but
I seem to recall that "through-the-material" discoloration was one of the
disadvantages. Maybe CS has overcome this (unless it was only folklore to begin with). |

| Ball point pen crack repair |
| |
10/5/2000: Will Thorpe |
|
I cracked the barrel of a Mont Blanc ball point in 1986. I couldn't
believe the cost of a new barrel, which I paid. I proceeded to crack the second barrel in
the same place, near the tip. I put about one quarter inch of two part epoxy down the
barrel. Drilled it out after it hardened. Cleaned it up with some polish. Crack now really
hard to see. The gold tip no longer screws off but the pen has worked fine for 14 years! |

Hi, Yesterday evening during a break at my night class someone showed me
a pen that belonged to her grandfather. She had learned I collect pens and wanted me to
help identify them. She also told me that there were many others she didn't bring with
her. Patricians maybe? The pen I have questions about is a red Waterman Ripple marked 32½
with Nickel trim. I didn't know such a pen existed. Does anyone have any info on it. It
was made in Canada. Thanks JF Ouellette Montréal , Canada |

I am a student the upper school. I have a sensa ballpoint which I am in
love with already but I would like to purchase a new fountain pen becuase they look pretty
cool and sophistacated. I saw a cheap pen in the Colorado Pen Company catalog and would
like to know if I should purchase this pen. The pen is the 2002 INOXCROM fountain pen.
Should I get it? Please e-mail me to let me know as I don't go on this board at all.

| Conways Casein |
| |
10/5/2000: Dean Tweeddale |
|
Kristi, I believe that is correct that the casein is not quite as durable
however in normal use I dont think that you have anything to worry about. The new
Conways are designed well and if Im not mistaken the cap rings are solid gold
so that you will never have a brassing problem there. I dont think that any other
pen manufacturer does that. I have one of the casein ones and see absolutely no wear to it
after four months of use. The acrylics are really great pens in terms of color but the
casein ones are beautiful with much added depth of color. Mine has not melted or turned to
milk so I wouldnt hesitate on the casein. Just my opinion of course but maybe one of
the Conway guys will come on and give you more facts to go on. Dean |

|
I have been repairing Duofold pencils, flat top. I cleans and polish the
crown and the cone. Clean and polish the barrel, removed any dirt or stains as much as
possible. Clean the mechanism, remove any lead, and established the mechanism to prevent
spillage, that is when there is a crack in the metal barrel, that happens in 90 % of the
pencils I see. If any will need these pencils repair let me know. Thank You Sincerely M.S.

|
Just enjoyed reading Stylophiles and now have a question. Mike Stevens
wrote about the new Conway Stewarts and said that the casein pen material is "not as
durable as some plastics". Am I to understand that casein is weaker or inferior or
not destined for a hundred years from now? The casein Conway I have feels great in hand
and somewhat "cool" in Arizona's hot summer weather. |

its feed to prevent leaking. really? please comment. |

Clague's Antiques and Collectibles. Just wanted to share a wonderful find
with everyone. I have this lovely burgundy vacumatic with a striped section. Unfotunately
the section must have been seriously glued into the barrel because it would not come out.
The section even broke unfortunately, so I was stuck with a gorgeous pen and no way to
fix. I tried every trick that I could but still couldn't get this boken piece to budge. I
decided to send the pen barrel to HAL ARNOLD - PEN RESTORATION SERVICES, LTD. - Hal
assured me that he had successfully done this type of repair and could assist me. He also
tried several of his tricks and was not successful as well. Fortunately, he has the
capability to use a special lathe. So he milled out the remaining section piece without
harming the threads, then was able to clean out the threads and replace with another
section. I received the pen today and the pen barrel is beautiful. Highly recommended
service that I will use again!! A++++++ :-) |

| Parker T1 Fountain Pen |

10/1/2000: Paul |

Hello, I was going through an old desk and found a Parker T1 fountain pen
that I received as a gift in high school. I used it during the school year and and on
during the subsequent years. I noticed that now when I put an ink cartridge in, ink leaks
from a hairline crack in the plastic under the nib. Does anyone know if it could be
repaired? I remember writing to Parker Pen Co. about 12 years ago and they couldn't help
me. Thanks. Paul |

1. 14kt (solid, not gf) Skyline set, near mint, standard size, no
engraving, the FP cap is very tight as is common with these pens, all-metal 14kt pen and
pencil, $325......2. Eversharp Envoy all gf set in box, lever filler, strong EX condition
but small wear spots on nib end of barrel where cap slips on, not a common set,
$50......3. Parker T-1 ballpoint, mint and perfect except that a close examination reveals
that the cap has slightly rubbed the barrel from being clicked a few times, the finest
example I have ever seen of one of these pens, $400....4. Parker T-1 rollerball/felt-tip,
cupped cap end, red-jewelled barrel end, white dummy marker is still in pen, mint and
absolutely perfect in every way, they don't get better than this one, $450........5.
Parker T-1 FP, this one is used and very nice, ring mark on barrel from cap being posted,
no dents or significant scratches, red jewels on both ends, I found this one seperate from
the mint pair, $350.......NOTE: The BP and Rollerball/Felt tip were found together and are
somewhat darker and less shiny than the FP. I know what T-1's are and these all 3 are
T-1's. First email, $3.20 plus actual cost of insurance (if desired, no questions asked
money-back satisfaction guarantee-same condition, smsmith007@aol.com, Thanks, Steve |

for you. If not Henry Gostony and Stuart Schneider wrote the fabulous book "The

Henry Gostony was former president of the United States Ball Point Collectors Club. No
guarantees since your's sounds like a pen more modern then vintage but he may be able

About six months ago I bought a pair of ball-pens of an unusual design
from an art-materials shop (in Harpenden, England) which no longer exists. I found them
very attractive and had expected to go on using them (one for black and one for blue ink)
for the rest of my life, but unfortunately one of them has now lost a screw-on piece from
off the end. I am trying to find out who manufactured these pens so I can contact the
company and get a spare part, or if necessary a whole new pen. I'd be grateful if anybody
on this list could either tell me who made these pens or direct me to a forum for ball
pens. (I know that there is an alt.collecting.pens-pencils newsgroup but I can't get it
through my ISP.) The pens consist of a transparent, coloured plastic barrel finished at
the ink-end with a silvered-plastic piece shaped a bit like a cartoon pirate's wooden leg
(long narrow straight bit which suddenly widens into a cup-shape where it screws onto the
barrel), and at the other end with another silvered-plastic piece shaped a bit like a
chess pawn (it is this bit which has gone missing). A thick white-metal wire is wrapped
3½ times round the barrel and then bent downwards towards the ink-end to form a wavy
clip, terminating in a ball. There is no maker's mark on the pens, but they fit a Parker
DIN 16 554/2 Ball Pen Refill. I have placed a scan of the surviving intact pen up on my
website. I know the bulletin board doesn't like to have live hot-links in it, so I am
going to give the URL here broken up with spaces, so anybody who wants to look can
reconstruct it. It's at http: // members . madasafish . com / ~cj_whitehound / pen.htm
Thanks. |
