Good Bye, Roma Blue
      11/30/2000:  Rick
I shook the bottle--a lot--and still got the very light gray-blue washed out color. Tried it with fine, medium and broad nibs, even used a paint brush: same color. I finally did the right thing--poured out all the Omas ink and kept the very nice bottle it came in. It is now sitting on my desk filled with Pelikan Brilliant Black.

Carene Pencil
      11/30/2000:  Steven
Reuben, They discontinued the pencil a few months back. Now they only make it in black, which really sucks. I have all three of the other pens in Amber Shimmer, but I didn't know that they discontinued the pencil untill a week or so ago. Now I am going crazy looking for one.

Pittsburgh Pens!
      11/29/2000:  Gary
Ron, For modern pens, there are a few options. 1. Colorado Pens at the Ross Park Mall (North of the City). 2. Weldin's, on Wood Street Downtown. 3. Signatures, in Squirrel Hill and the Airport. (There is also a MB shop at the Airport). (No bargains at these shops but fun to look). For vintage pens there are no real shops, but lots of antique stores. If you are looking for parts, and odds and ends, try Crown Antiques (not open on Saturday). The shop is chaos, but has boxes and boxes of pens and parts (all pretty well picked through, but you never know what you might find!)

Re: Waterman Serenite
      11/29/2000:  Richard
Before I'd invest in any fine pen, I'd want to write with it for more than a word or three. A good pen shop will let you dip (or will dip for you) a pen you're serious about. If it takes several dips, that's fine; I've had no problems getting re-dips. The Serenite, with its unusual curved shape, is a really special case that demands perhaps more care in selection - I adore my Bexley 5th Anniversary, which is an old-style, overweight, back-heavy cylindrical pen, and when I picked up a Serenite, it felt simply horrid. But that's ME, not YOU.

      11/29/2000:  Ron
This might be a dumb question - but does anyone know of a decent pen shop in the Pittsburgh area. We're going to be there in the near future, and I figure that if I have to go through a museum with the family, the least they can do is wait a bit while I drool in a pen shop.

I won't apologize for the description, but I will say that my intent would have been clearer had I placed the description in quotes, or had I used another term such as "artsy-craftsy" or "designer" or "second-tier" or "non-mainstream." I will try to remember to do so if the topic comes up again. No offense meant whatsoever to Italy; after all, my home- and business-defense tool is a Beretta 92, the standard military sidearm of the United States and arguably the most-reliable sidearm in current production. And then there are those nice Auroras and Omases and Deltas...

Waterman Serenite
      11/29/2000:  Aaron Weiss
I am considering purchasing a Waterman Serenite fountain pen. I have not owned a fine pen before, and the Serenite really caught my eye. I'm a patent attorney, and I think it is a compromise between the conservatism of a fountain pen and the relaxed feeling of the design. Any comments/suggestions? I'm thinking of getting a fine or extra fine nib for writing precision, but I'm open to warnings against that, if appropriate. I plan to carry my new pen in my shirt pocket - would that be a problem with the unique shape of the Serenite?

Inks-Solv-x, etc
      11/28/2000:  Sam - Pendemonium
Oh dear, here we go again on inks :-)

Since the 1930s, fountain pen inks have consisted of water, dye and surfuctant - once in a blue moon, ink manufacturers drop in mold inhibitors. No solvents in fountain pen inks!

It is rumored that Parker's cleaning agent, Solvx was a liquid detergent (aka surfuctant). Haven't the foggiest what Sheaffer's RC-35 was, but would wager it was also a surfuctant. These were introduced during wartime, probably more of a marketing ploy to get folks to buy these inks than anything else. Ink that was good for your pen meant you didn't have to try and find parts if needed which were scarce - Wartime materials came first, FP parts didn't rank very high on the War Department's list of necessities!

As far as currently produced inks, from time to time all of them have minor color differences, usually so minor that you would never know. Ink is mixed in batches, we're bound to end up with minor variations because human beings are doing the mixing.

Have fun with your inks, enjoy the different colors. If you think something is "off" in a bottle of ink you buy, return it to your dealer - at least then they can check their other stock and notify the manufacturer if something isn't right.

Inkily yours, Sam

Re: about inks--Solv"X" and others misteriousabout inks--Solv"X" and others misterious
      11/28/2000:  Richard
I think the reason for the lack of solvents in inks today is that these kinds of chemicals have a nasty tendency to eat the pen while they're cleaning it. And most fountain-pen users these days are afficionados, not casual writers with no other choice of writing instruments; this means that most fountain-pen users keep their pens pretty clean without the help of unknown noxious substances.

about inks--Solv"X" and others misterious
      11/28/2000:  real
I am searching about some components in fountainpens ink,Parker made its SUPERQUINK with Solv "X",this element clean your pen when you write,Sheaffer made its Fluid for writting with similar solvent called SC??,Montblanc, the same, etc,Is it true? What were this quimical elements with commercial names? Why the inksmaker do not included this solvents any more? Any idea, please,Tia.

Inks
      11/28/2000:  Kristi Keller
If someone really is interested in comparing inks they can purchase Greg Clarks book Fountain Pen Inks A Sampler which may be purchased from Pendemonium or the author. It is a most helpful volume and will either save someone the price of some inks or cause a surge in buying due to so many available beautiful colors.

re:re:Roma Blue
      11/28/2000:  Kyle Dening
I think we can take the comment from Wacko Johnny D about Italy, one of the cradles of civilisation, being a "third-world" country as a slip of the foot in mouth.Incidentally try giving the bottle of ink a shake & you may be surprised.

re: Roma Blue
      11/28/2000:  Waco Johnny D
Typical of third-world inks -- lack of consistency from one sample to the next. You are not the first to notice this with Roma 2000 and to mention it on a fp board, if that's any consolation.

Roma Blue
      11/28/2000:  Rick
I noted someone compared Omas Roma 2000 Blue ink to Penman. I bought a bottle of 2000 blue last week-unopened- and found it to be a very light, greyish-blue which looks washed out when used with fine and broad nibs. What gives?

I also have a "Noir et Noir", identical to the Boheme except for the bands. I have used Pelikan cartridges, which are European standard short length, come in many colors, and are identical to the Montblanc cartridges, without a problem. My nib is medium and flexible.

Blue Ink
      11/27/2000:  Karmann
Jason, I, too, have been searching for a blue ink, as I'm down to my last 1/2 bottle of Penman Sapphire. Mont Blanc makes a nice dark blue-I have used it with a Waterman Fine Nib and have been pleased with the result, although I've not heard many good comments on Mont Blanc ink. It is a dark blue with a fairly dense color. I tried Pelikan blue with a Lamy Med. nib-the color is so washed out and watery that it looks like a pale lavender. Karmann

Mostly NOS pens FS - Reduced
      11/27/2000:  Scott Summerfield
Hi everyone...I have the following items left for sale with reduced prices, shipping included in US, 3-day no-questions-asked return policy in same condition as sold. 1) Pelikan M1000 green stripe w/black cap, inked once, flawless, as new, too big for me, awesome broad nib, $225; 2) Parker French-made FP's, model number may be 19, never sold in US, black plastic barrel, brushed chrome cap, polished chrome clip w/inset lacquer-filled arrow, medium semi-hooded steel nib, cartridge filler, great for Parker collectors, circa 1980's, new, never inked, $12 each (6 available); 3) Sheaffer Glideriter cartridge soft-tip pen, uses Sheaffer fp cartridges, new in unopened (but slightly shopworn) blister pack that includes two nearly evaporated cartridges, red w/chrome cap, great for Sheaffer collectors, $9.  Thanks!   Scott

Montblanc Bohème
      11/27/2000:  Michael R.
Mike, I can only give you my review of the Noir et Noir which is practically the same as the Bohème except the missing "noir et noir" imprint on the ring towards the pens end and the typical three Montblanc caprings now on the Bohèmes gripping section. To start with its a lot of money for a pen as long as the "Mozart" (you'll buy a 146 Legrand for less) but the pen looks and feels precious and nicely done (you may have your own opinion about MBs "precoius resin") especially with the artificial gems in the clip. The size makes it easy and comfortable to carry around. With the cap posted the pen is long enough and which is more important to me wide (in diameter) enough (thicker then the classique Meisterstück - 144); it is a pretty heavy pen due to the metall mechanism for the retractable nip and cartridge. You can only use MB cartridges so if you don't like the 6 avaiable colors you got to refill them with a stringe (which works great);I was told not to use standard int. cartridges because they differ in shape a little bit at the top part and may come loose and mess up your pen (but haven't tried it to proove it wrong or right). I have an EF nip which is very smooth and has good flow but is very stiff (like old Sheaffers maybe). I like this pen but still think its a little bit to expensive. In comparison to the Meisterstück 144 Classique the Bohème/Rouge-Noir et Noir definatly wins.

I must first admit that I am very new to using fountain pens. My question is should water soluble inks be used on legal documents? Can the ink be removed after it has dried? Thanks.

The first practical fountain pen
      11/26/2000:  David Nishimura
It is interesting that the Waterman company did not claim to have invented the first practical fountain pen until quite late in the game. I don't have my full research notes handy, but it was after L.E. Waterman's death, and possibly as late as the 1930s. The reason for this is clear: they simply couldn't have gotten away with such a bald-faced rewriting of history until enough time had passed and their market dominance had made such a claim plausible. The problem for us is now also a matter of semantics. The definition of "practical" as relates to the history of technology is notoriously fluid. Note that with pens, eyedroppers were denigrated as impossibly impractical as soon as penmakers embraced self-fillers, and a similar attempt to dismiss what came before accompanied the introduction of the modern plastic ink cartridge. Even if Waterman's first pens were a significant advance over earlier designs, that did not mean those earlier designs were not also "practical". If they had not been, they would not have been made and sold. Fountain pen sales increased dramatically during the last decades of the 19th and first decades of the 20th centuries, which in hindsight feeds the notion that this was because previous fountain pens just didn't cut it. But there are many reasons why a new (or not so new) technology becomes widely accepted at a given point in time, with pricing, marketing, consumer needs, and fashion being fully as important as how refined that technology happens to be.

Harris Pen
      11/26/2000:  Steve Pierce
It was indeed a Sheaffer. A "No-Nonsense" fountain pen. Quite appropriate considering the last couple of weeks! One of the other election officials was also using a Sheaffer, in this case a blue "cartridge pen" (uncapped).

Harris Pen

I noticed that Katherine Harris, the Florida Secretary of State used a fountain pen to certify the vote count in Florida. Someday that will be a very famous pen. I tried to identify it, but could not get a good look. Was anyone able to identify it? It was deep blue, and I originally thought it was a Shaeffer, but am uncertain.

Help Identify Pen
      11/26/2000:  Larry Shelton
In 1933 Parkers top of the line pen was the Vacumatic selling for $5 to $10. At the other end of their line was the budget Parkette. The pen was a lever filler and came in two models. The De Luxe (standard and slender) was fluted with a ball clip, three cap bands and sold for $1.75. The other Parkette was round with two cap bands and sold for $1.25 Colors were black, green marble, burgundy marble, and grey marble. In 1938 the pens were restyled. The Parkette Zephyr was introduced I believe in 1940.

      11/25/2000:  Timbo
I NEED HELP TO IDENTIFY A PEN THAT I RECENTLY PURCHASED AT A JUNK SHOP. IT IS MAROON WITH WHITE FLECKING, AND IT HAS "PARKETTE DELUXE, PARKER PEN CO., USA" ON THE BARREL. IT HAS AN IMPRINT ON THE NIB THAT SAYS" PARKETTE MADE IN USA 37". IT APPEARS TO BE A PARKER, BUT IT IS A LEVER FILLER, AND HAS A BALL ON THE CLIP, NOT AN ARROW. THE BODY IS NOT ROUND, IT IS MULTI-SIDED. IT HAS 3 GOLD CAP BANDS. ANY HELP. I WOULD APPRECIATE, THANKS, TIMBO

Aurora blue and Omas Roma 2000 are both excellent. The Omas is most like the penman in color in my opinion. I made the same switch because the Penman clogs some pens.

Who invented fountain pen ?
      11/25/2000:  Stephen Lam
As a collector of fountain pens, I like to find, admire and possibly own quality vintage pens. As a user of fountain pens, I want my collection of pens to be practical and useful. For these reasons, I don't think it matters who owned the first patent on fountain pens. It is the people who produced practical and useable pens that interest me. My first book on pen collecting was Cliff Lawrence's little handbook in which he listed a number of really early examples and patents. They were interesting to read and I suppose whoever owned those patents should be credited with their contributions towards the eventual production of practical fountain pens. However, I think few should dispute that prior to Watermans, Sheaffers, Parkers, Swan (Mabie Todd) and maybe Onoto (the Pelican), dip pens ruled. It is perhaps more accurate to credit Watermans for the "production and marketing" of the first practical fountain pen. That is my understanding and to me that is all that matters.

I have the following colours available, Burgundy M nib and Blue B nib. All pens are mint in box with papers. EMS-Speedpost shipping (3-6 days) to the US is $28, insurance is another $7. FOUNTAIN PEN Invention
      11/24/2000:  Bernie, stylophile
May I put my two-cents worth on this matter? I researched on this subject in the Federal Patent Office in Canada and found a number of patents for the FOUNTAIN PEN dated way before that of Waterman. I believe that Mr. Waterman was falsely credited for inventing the FOUNTAIN PEN because he is the only one that described the workings of in on paper. This includes the capilary attraction and all. I happen to have a copy of his patent letters here and if anyone wants a copy (within reason) I will send one. Thanks. Bernie, stylophile

Pen choices
      11/24/2000:  Fran
When I have been off work for a while and have not had to carry a few pens with me, I usually gravitate to my S.T. DuPonts or my Delta 365. These pens are all nice and solid feeling pens and they are large pens, too. I like a nice hefty pen when I am writing. The nibs are all fine nibs and write very smoothly. I guess that my favorite ink is the Yard-O-Lead blue-black. A very nice shade.

Parker/Waterman repair: Address Correction
      11/24/2000:  Len Provisor
The 1400 Parker Drive building sits dark and vacant, a bitter symbol of Gillette's careless regard to the pride of Janesville and the world. Mr. Sheaffer, the City Manager recently told me the people of Janesville will never forgive Gillette for this travesty of their disregard for their valued history. The new facility, located nearby which continues repair services and decoration of writing instruments for the Stationery Products Division, is located at 2200 Foster Ave., Janesville, WI 53545 800/523-2486 As of this date, the purchase of this Division by Newell/Ruubbermaid is still in question since the recent resignation of the President of Newell, citing his disappointment of marketing performance of certain brands, and the "recent acquisitions are in question". It seems that Newell as a parent may be no better or even worse than that of Gillette. Let's all hold our collective breath and hope for the best for this treasured American icon.

      11/23/2000:  Dean Tweeddale
Well here it is Thanksgiving day and we all have lots to be thankful for. Well at least I hope we do. Today was the first chance I’ve had in over a month since the move to Seattle and all to pick out some pens and ink them. So what did I pick? Here goes… First was a Parker 51 vac with the custom sterling silver snake cap that I picked up at the Columbus show. Fine nib inked with Sheaffer Skrip black ink, writes great! Second was my trusted Omas Arco with its 14kt fine flexible nib. A fun and dependable pen to write with, inked with Bexley turquoise. Next was an old Sailor pen don’t know the model but has one of the smoothest 14kt nibs that I’ve ever written with. This one I used Campo Marzio Blu ink in, a very nice shade of blue. Forth was another Parker 51 this one a aerometric filler with a Duofold orange barrel and hood that Howard Levy of Bexley Pen was kind enough to sell me. I inked this with the special Omas red “Return to the Motherland” ink, but interestingly the color that it writes is almost exactly the color of the pen, Duofold orange. Next was a Conway Stewart which I inked with of all things Conway Stewart ink. Don’t know the name of the ink cause the label is gone but it again is a nice shade of blue. And finally I used Aurora Black ink in my 51 Flighter which has a nib that I got from John M. at the Columbus show. As you can see I like the 51’s, but these all are dependable and great writing pens. I of course have lots of pens and inks to choose from, did I choose some good ones (pens or inks)? What pens would you choose out of your collection after being with almost no ink for over a month? Which ink would be your first choice? Hope all Penlovers have a Happy and safe Thanksgiving Day and enjoy this Holiday season. Good to be back in the ink... Dean

Sensa Pens Wanted
      11/23/2000:  Barbara Van Sant
Hello I am looking for a source to buy Sensa pens at discounted prices. I know there must be someone who does this as many people are selling them at auction and the reserve prices are low but the bidders go crazy for them. I really need them as my hands are pretty much ruined for writing and the plasma grip on the Sensa pens seems to be the only kind that help. Thanks to anyone who can help me. Feel free to respond to my email address. barbaravs@pcisys.net Happy Holiday to all.

Le Pen
      11/22/2000:  jbhyde
I apologize for asking such a undignified question of this group, but I am unable to locate my wife's favorite "soft tip" , slim pen by the name of, "LePen", by a Japanese company, Marvy. It is cheap ($1.29), but she loves them and is taking a new job...commuter frim San F. to LA...and I would love to give he a gross for her new job. The local store in San Jose that sold them is going out of business. I appreciate any leads or online sites to purchase. Many thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Send emails instead
      11/22/2000:  Stephen Lam
I hope Len will not be offended if I suggest that instead of cards and letters, we send emails to keep in touch with our friends and folks, if only to save some trees. You can use your beloved pens to write a note, then scan it into a file which can be sent through emails many times over. This is quicker, safer and less costly too !!

Happy Holidays ! Write a card or letter !!
      11/22/2000:  Len Provisor
best wishes to everyone for a great Holiday Season. It is the time of the year when, if you have not already, send a written card, note or letter to your friends and families for best wishes of the season. After all, we all have pens and nothing captures the moment than the expression of your own written words. Have a safe and healthy Holiday.

Thanks to all who took the time to answer my question, either here or privately, about the inventor of the fountain pen. This has been a great review of the history of our beloved treasures for me. Thanks to all who took the time to answer me.

Early Fountain Pens
      11/22/2000:  Larry Shelton
Pierre Haury and Jean-Pierre Lacroux in their book "A Passion for Pens" sort of give the Egyptians credit for the first fountain pen. Seems the early reed pens were filled with dry ink. Sounds creditable but no patents back then.... They go on to say that in 1905 James Maginnis made a list that was published in the "Journal of the Society of Arts" filling 50 pages on patents for early fountain pens. In 1657 reservoir pens (fountain pens) were in use. One of the earliest credited pens was by Folsch in 1809. In the US, Holland was given credit for his first pen in 1869, Paul Wirt in1878, Warren Lancaster in1879, Laughlin in 1880, Mabie Todd in 1884. Waterman invented the first successful fountain pen in 1884. Everybody understands the concept of capillary attraction, right? By the 1890's numerous other companys, some already in existence others new to the field were cashing in on the growing popularity of the fountain pen; Parker, Carey, Aikin Lambert, American Fountain Pen Co. (Moore), Boston Pen Co., Caw's, Conklin, Eagle Pencil Co., etc. were patenting and manufacturing their own versions. Happy Thanksgiving to all.....

Happy Thanksgiving

Myrna and I want to wish each Dean and every one of Pen Lover's readers a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday. It's a great time to enjoy family, to overeat, and to think about all the wonderful friends with whom we share our pen collecting and enjoy so much. Have a happy holiday!

Fountain pen inventor
      11/21/2000:  Donald Lavin
The posts on the inventor of the fountain pen are interesting however it should be pointed out that what we refer to as a fountain pen had been invented long before 1890. The reason why L.E. Waterman is considered the inventor of the fountain pen is that his fountain pen was the first successful enterprise. There are numerous patents for earlier fountain pens however, they were not successful so only collectors of old writing instruments seem to have an interest in their history. I am not familiar with Mr. Purvis however what he probably invented was another fountain pen with some unique internal mechanism not the first fountain pen. By 1890 L.E. Waterman & Co. was well established and had already moved into larger quarters in N.Y city. Mabie, Todd & Bard also held earlier patents as did Caw's etc. Don Lavin

Patent #419,065
      11/21/2000:  John King Tarpinian
Did some research after Fran asked the question about a black man having invented the fountain pen and I came up with the following information from www.blackinventors.com - W. B. Purvis realized how much of an inconvenience it was to have to carry around a bottle of ink whenever you needed to sign a contract or fill out legal papers. He therefore decided to do something about it. On January 7, 1890, Purvis received a patent for the fountain pen. The pen eliminated the need for an ink bottle by storing ink within a reservoir within the pen which is then fed to the pen's tip. Of his accomplishment, Purvis said, "the object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive construction of a fountain pen adapted to general use and which may be carried in the pocket." The creation of the fountain pen has made office work cleaner and less expensive for businesses all over the world.

Origin of the fountain pen
      11/21/2000:  Fran
I know that this subject has been done to death, but I was watching a talk show a couple of weeks ago and at the end the hostess mentioned a number of items that were invented by African-Americans and among them was the fountain pen. Is this accurate? If it is, then I think that we need add him/her to the list of people that we celebrate during February--Black History month.

Early Mabie Todd history - Help needed!
      11/21/2000:  Terry
I'm doing some research about the early history of the Mabie Todd company. I'm now focusing on two questions: when did Mabie Todd introduce their first fountain pens and when did they introduce the SWAN brand? I've had access to British documents mostly and would be happy to hear from any collector who has early US advertising, catalog or other document or information dating from the 1880 - 1892 period. At the moment, the earliest mention I found of a Mabie Todd fountain pen is 1880 (the "Calligraphic" pen) and I can trace the use by MT of the SWAN brand back to 1893. Regarding the latter, I'm quite certain that it was used before that, but unfortunately I couldn't find any document at all for the 1885 to 1892 period...

OMAS Pens
      11/20/2000:  Alan
I would say to those of you asking that OMAS is the best modern pen. I own over fifty of them but the best writing one is an Arco Celluloid which John Mottishaw did for me with a fine nib. It is the best writing pen I own, by far. Check his site out (www.nibs.com) and it will tell you a lot about the OMAS pens and their nibs. The T2 is a really awesome pen as well but mine has been in Boston for three months awaiting its nib.

Mont Blanc 75th Anniv & Parker Pen Set

You guys operate at a stratospheric level of scribnosophistacated esoterica that I can only stand back and admire, but I hope you'll be able to help me with two pedestrian problems; 1) I need a 75th anniversay MontBlanc limited edition roller ball rose color with diamond and 2) on an even more prosaic level I need to replace the two pens from a Parker M23 desk set (for sentimental reasons). Any help?

Paragon and Optima
      11/19/2000:  Will Thorpe
I have several OMAS celluloids (fine and medium nib) and one Optima (Broad nib). The Optima is just a little shorter than the Omas and a little fatter. The Optima fits in the pocket nicely. The Optima has no blind cap since the end of the cap seals against the barell. I never get any excess ink in the Optima cap nor does ink seep out around the feed. I really like the Optima cap system. The Optima has about 5,000 miles on airplanes with no problems (never have any problems on airplanes with my Omas pens either). The Optima broad nib is smooth (I wish it was a medium though) and the Omas celluloid 18kt nibs are smooth, the edge going to Omas. I've never had a Paragon but I wrote with one in a store that had a Fine nib which I believe was 14kt. That Paragon wasn't as smooth as the Optima. I've changed color of ink in my Optima several times, they flush out just fine but you have to do it a few times.

Interesting Parker Duofold Pencil Find
      11/19/2000:  Jon Rosenbaum
Today at the local flea market I found a very interesting and quite unique Parker Sr. Duofold jade pencil. What makes it unique is the incription: "With the complements of Geo. S. Parker." The name is in script and is easily recognizable as the founder's. First time I've ever run into anything like this. Any one else seen Parker pens or pencils of the 20's with a similar inscription? Normally I do not like this old style pencil, but in this case its a keeper!

Sheaffer Nib Markings

Paragon and Optima
      11/19/2000:  Stephen Lam
Omas Paragon is a good user pen, light enough to hold for hours on end but substantial enough to give you the feeling that you are not using a cheapie. The elegant faceted body gives it a timeless look. Beware however of plating wear, especially the gold plated trim near the section. The filling system is reliable. I have been using one for 15 years and it has not failed me. Mine is a medium nib, quite flexible but of course you should choose the size you like. My Optima was among the first crop some 10 years ago. It is solid and reliable. The reserve ink filling system, although more of a gimmick, has some practical use, although you will have a lot of problems if you try to empty one. My Optima, in blue marble colour, has slight material deformation in the cap, around the inner cap (I assume there is one). As mine was among the first crop, maybe the current models do not have this problem and of course mine could be a one off sample. As a person with a reasonably large hand, I prefer the Paragon as a day to day user. I also like its styling.Omas has in fact made a large number of models based on the Paragon design including some limited editions. In my opinion, if you have to have one Omas, it should be a Paragon.

PEN FAIR 11/17/00
      11/17/2000:  Lee Chait
The Fair has ended and a good time was had by all. I arrived about 1045 and there was already a good number of people there. Traffic continued till the 4PM close of the Fair. A brisk business was done by Jimmy and his staff with many closeouts and bargains to be had. Several vintage sellers were also present. Door prizes were given every hour and at 4PM the Grand Prize: a Mont Blanc Schiller LE was won by a very deserving individual. Among those present was Scott Woodside of Platinum Pens. One of the most impressive items at the Fair was Scott's new pencil which allows you to write as hard as you want with no breakage of .5 mm lead. Also available were several of the Duofold Airplanes in Yellow or Orange (no response necessary from Len) and I understand some of these changed hands. The new Visconti Dragon was available as were an almost unlimited number of pens from a few dollars to many thousands of dollars. Refreshments were served and by any standard the event was a success.

Ink on shirt
      11/15/2000:  Raymond Wong
Well, Mr. Will Thorpe. This is the story: It was a Sheaffer Balance Classic, Royal Blue Quink ink. The pen was full, as always. It was on a jet to Toronto. I think there was ink in the cap, and some condensation as well. It was the ink in the cap that got through the hole for attaching the clip and onto my shirt. I figure there must be some ink that got behind the inner cap. So strictly speaking, it was not from the ink in the converter. So the lesson for me was, clean the cap before getting on a plane.

Pen Shows
      11/14/2000:  Dean Tweeddale
Been a week since I returned home from the Ohio Pen Show, we’ll have a show review up on the site soon. My take was the show overall was one of the best of the year with lots of community spirit among the collectors. Also lots of recognition given out during the show, including to Lynn Brant the creator of Penlovers. This show just seems to have that down home feeling about it. I’ve also never seen so many pizzas eaten (inhaled) in such a short time, but what a lot of fun. Look for the full review on Penlovers soon.

Of other show news most have heard of the sale of the New Jersey National Pen Show to Maryann and Steve Zucker of Penstop Online fame. I’ve had some great conversations with both of them about the impending move of the show to New York. They have some great ideas for the show which come from their attending most of the major shows in the past. They are also open to listening to all of the pen community for our input on what would help to make another great show. If you have ideas, comments, etc. send them a quick email at Info@penstoponline.com. Be watching here for updates as their progress goes forward. Dean

Re: Raymond Wong, Ink on Shirt
      11/13/2000:  Richard
Dyeing a shirt black or applying scissirs are both pretty drastic approaches. I suggest trying Amodex. Fabulous ink stain remover, so long as the shirt is white or colorfast (test on edge of shirttail). I recently used it to disappear a stain of Private Vintage Tanzanite on a pair of khaki-colored 60/40 cotton/poly twill trousers - not a trace remains! You can buy Amodex from many of the major dealers, such as Colorado Pen, Fountain Pen Hospital, Pendemonium, and others.

New York Pen Show
      11/13/2000:  Jon Rosenbaum
I must take exception to Bob's comments about holding a NYC pen show at the Pierre or the Plaza. In order to attract the largest number of people, especially the vintage collector/dealers, the cost must be kept down. Shows are expensive. Airfares are high and continue to rise, as do table rates and hotels. Maryann and Steve's challenge will be to find a hotel in the New York area not too far from Kennedy that will not charge an arm and a leg. As a hobbyist, I do not feel that pen collecting need be thought of as "luxuary goods." In order for a pen show to be successful (see LA, Chicago, DC and especially Columbus) it needs to be promoted properly, easy to get to and not prohibitively expensive. Just my $0.02 worth.

New York Pen Show

Would'nt it be great if the new organisers decided to seize the moment & go upmarket a little bit ? why don't they try the Plaza Hotel or the Pierre ? Who cares if you have to pay a little more, it's a small price to pay for dragging the pen community kicking & screaming into the 21st century where luxury goods are bought & sold in an appropriate environment.

Laban
      11/12/2000:  brian
I have the tortoise shell with the silver cap. It is on the small side. I was quite impressed with how well it is made and the way that it writes. It is truly a bargain at $40! I have thrown out their catalog, I regret that now, but they have a huge selection of pens. Some are quite cheesy looking and some are rather impressive.

Does anyone know anything about Laban pens? I've seen them advertised in catalogs. They seem to be an interesting line of inexpensive pens. Are they good writers?

Parker Duofold Aircraft
      11/12/2000:  Donal
My Parker Duofold model aircraft (#5 0f 100) arrived on Friday from Len Provisor, what a beauty! It really is a pleasure to see such fine attention to detail in this age of sketchy quality control; the finish, presentation and packaging all impeccable. If this man ever decides to produce an LE pen jump at the chance, it will be PERFECT! And the plane? Let's just say that I'm off to order the next in the series, a Beechcraft! Donal

Well this is the pen to get for the holidays! It looks like that Sheaffer had no idea how popular is pen was going to be. Looks like the Play Station 2 of pens. MANDARIN Duofold Airplane model
      11/11/2000:  Len Provisor
Several customers have asked for the 1928 Parker Duofold Monoplane in Mandarin. I have made them in Mandarin, same price as the red. I brought one to show at the Ohio Pen Show, it was literally sold in a few minutes time. Close your eyes, picture a Mandarin Duofold, picture the plane....absolutely stunning. The plane is not anatomically correct in this color, but sure looks terrific. It's only 6 weeks to Xmas, are you tempted? Next and final shipment of models will not be until sometime in February, but if orders are placed in next 5 days, Xmas MAY BE possible for an extra $50. plus Air Express. Otherwise, a nice brochure will have to do until February. Visit www.inkblotters.com for close-up pictures of this stunning model.

FIFTY-DOLLAR CELLULOID FOUNTAIN PENS
      11/10/2000:  John King Tarpinian
I was at The Fountain Pen Shop’s Pen Fair today. There were two items that I have to tell people about. - The first was a new gel pen by Cross, the ION. Hard to describe but the Cross web site does them justice. It is a stubby capless pull-action pen that comes with a ringtop cap. (Sounds like a contradiction but that is the best was to describe it). The five gel colors are very vibrant. I bought two, as gifts, one for a friend in retail sales and another for a stewardess. Perfect pens for their respective lines of work. http://www.crossusa.com/cross/ - The second pens were FIFTY-DOLLAR CELLULOID FOUNTAIN PENS. The brand is Asian and is called Acura. They had a basic steel iridium made in Germany nib and wrote OK. It was the celluloid that was the treat. They came in white, amber, blue and red. Not to say these pens copied OMAS/Visconti but they sure do invoke the style of an OMAS/Visconti. The unique feature was that the caps posted on the threaded end cap. These pens are a bargain at $50. There was also a metal and celluloid model that invoked the image of Montegrappa pens, too. These pens were priced at $70. If anybody is interested, I can post a scan of the sales brochure on Monday. - Also, both John Mottishaw and Jon Rosenbaum were present, selling vintage pens. There were a couple hundred being shown between the two of them. Tomorrow, John Maloney and Chris Odgers will have their vintage wares on display and for sale. - The fair is open from 10 to 3 on Saturday. If you are in the area you must drop in and bring your wallet. Being Veteran’s Day you’ll need to buy a vintage pen with a military clip… - The Fountain Pen Shop’s web site is: http://www.fountainpenshop.com Fred’s email address is: Fredspen@yahoolcom

Loose Nibs
      11/10/2000:  Gary Lehrer
Ron: You were asking about heating the inside of the hard rubber section of your Duofold Jr. in order to expand the section where it has been compressed by the nib. You're on the right track, but what you actually want to do is compress the section so the nib and feed will be tighter. Heat the section and then rub it between your thumb and forefunger to compress it and make the hole a bit smaller. It will work!

New York Pen Show

We've been talking about it for years... and it looks like it may finally happen! Congratulations to Maryann & Steve Zucker of the New Jersey Pen Show and planned move to a New York location. I'll be there!

Sheaffer Vac filler

Ohio Show
      11/10/2000:  Lynn Brant
Exhaustion from a great show was followed by more exhaustion over the election. Thanks to all who attended the show and a special heartfelt thanks for the tribute given me at the show as the creator of PenLovers. This came in the form of a plaque mounted on a wood presentation box containing a new Bexley fp and rb set. I'm still not sure what these new pens are called, but they are a superb addition to the Bexley line. As for the pens I was selling, many are gone but many remain. I will be offering these online a few at a time as soon as I recover. Thanks to Terry and Sonya for again giving the best show in the country!

Sheaffer Vac filler

Ohio Pen Show 2000
      11/9/2000:  Melinda Adams
I just want to add my kudos to all the others concerning the Ohio Pen Show. I thought this show was one of the best I have attended all year. OK, I am prejudiced---I have known the Mawhorters for many years---but this show, while not a monster show, was large enough to attract a wealth of beautiful pens and wonderful dealers, yet intimate enough to feel like old home week. I met with old friends and new, and everyone, even members of the public, was unfailingly friendly and gracious. Terry and Sonya worked tirelessly on this show to make it run smoothly, and as a staff member, I know what a daunting task that is. While very little created a panic among us, we now know what to do (or not do) next year. But that is the beauty of "next year." I don't think any other pen show could be as user-friendly, in terms of the appreciation Terry and Sonya have for the dealers and buyers. The tributes to Abe Schwartz, Lynn Brandt, and Dick Johnson were especially moving because they were heartfelt. Terry and Sonya are nothing if not generous and loyal. That sums it for me. I hope to see you all again next year in Ohio, and perhaps at some other show in the future. I'm still reeling from all the great stuff I saw but DIDN'T buy. There's always a next time. (And I forgive Bert Heiserman for bidding a great Parker counter-top display case right out from under me!) Best!

The "Pen Fairy" cometh
      11/8/2000:  Len Provisor
Yup, Maryann "The Pen Fairy" and Steve, the "Prince of Pens" Zucker are going to attempt to revive the NJ Pen Show into a NY location and make it better than ever. This is a delicate operation, show dates and locations are critical for obvious reasons, and the Zuckers are very professional and aware of what it takes to make a show successful. So when a final date and location is eventually disclosed, take a good hard look, it should be a great show. Congrats to the Pen Fairy and her Prince!

Congrats !!!

Pens Under $100
      11/8/2000:  John Odom
There are multitudes of good pens out there for under $100. The cheaper models of the Sheaffer Prelude are well within that range. You can get a brand-new Parker 45 for $25 at Staples, and used ones are even cheaper. There are specials running on the Web for Sheaffer Balance II's for well under $100. Vintage: they are hard to find (no one is willing to turn them loose), but Sheaffer Targas can be had in your range. Esterbrook J's are available for under $50, as are Balances and various Touchdown-fillers and Snorkels. This is only a sampling. I have bought several pens from folks on other bulletin boards, and there are some good websites out there. Good luck!

re: loose nibs
      11/8/2000:  Waco Johnny D
Hi Ron,

You are on the right path with the shellac trick, but I would suggest rather than using it as an adhesive you use it instead to increase the thickness of the base of the nib. Apply 1 coat, let it dry, apply a 2nd, let it dry, apply a 3rd, let it dry. Then try the nib fit again. With enough coats the nib should be thick enough to remain in place. You can probably accomplish the same with successive coats of enamel or acrylic. Obviously you coat the top of the base of the nib rather than the underside (in case a repair newbie is reading this I thought I ought to mention that).

I would discourage any operation that risks rendering the section hole anything else than round. Out-of-round section holes can be a pain to troubleshoot. As FD says in "Da Book," some pens wear in that way from long use, but I wouldn't do anything to exacerbate the problem.

WJD

loose nibs
      11/8/2000:  Ron
I have a Parker Duofold Jr. that has a loose nib. I've encountered this with other pens, and have never found a really satisfactory way to repair the problem. With some of the Sheaffers, there is a sholder in the section that prevents puthing the nib in farther to get it tight enough. In this case, I CAN push the nib and feed in farther, to get it "tight" but then the nib sits in too far. In the past I have used a dab of shelac to hold things in place, but don't find that to be quite satisfactory. The Duofold section is hard rubber, as is the feed. I wonder if heating the inside of the section to expand the section where it has been compressed by the nib would do the trick? Maybe heating back part of the feed too? Has anyone had any success repairing this problem that they might like to share? Email direct if you want to, but I suspect that others have encountered this too, and would benifit from your suggestions! Many thanks!

Ohio Pen Show
      11/7/2000:  Len Provisor
Well, there you have it, the Ohio Pen Show is now solidly entrenched as one of the premier events of the year. This was one of the busiest from the start on Thurs. with half the main ballroom filled with sellers and early buyers. Friday was just as busy, with a few "frenzies" when new sellers arrived with cases and boxes filled with new treasures. Friday night pen lovers gulped down 50 pizzas, a new world record for a pen show. The Saturday Auction was very successful with over 100 lots, only 3 or 4 were not sold. A Parker 51 first year with a rare smooth sterling cap went for $500., a 51 Nassau Green double jewel went for $350., #74V Rose Gold Holland hatchet filler for $475., a #71 Sterling Filigre Holland hatchet filler went for $600., and a Conklin fancy gold filled filigree crescent filler with original box went down for $900. By Sunday there was a constant traffic from the public and I heard from many that this was their first pen show, telling me that advertising works. About 120 tables were brimming with new pens from many dealers. The surprise honored guest was Mr. Dante Del Vecchio, President of Visconti, bringing the new L.E. Dragon pen, about 800 world-wide with about 200 for he U.S. The pen is a Milliniem Arc with a beautiful airbrush hand painting of a Dragon, also featuring a new metal piston filler with an ink view window in the piston body. Rob Rosenberg was showing the new Conklin Nozac, and I found it to be true to the style, more hefty in girth and having all the appearance of a classic. I was impressed, and I would make this a recommended buy for beauty and quality. Unfortunately the Conway Stewart Churchill didn't make it in time for the show. Other international exhibitors were from Italy, Belgium, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, France, UK, some I may have missed. I had delivered an orange and a Mandarin Parker Duofold airplane model to Bill Weakley of Power Pens, they were sold in a matter of minutes. Dick Johnson had a parts "blow-out" sale, a rare event in itself. Like I said before, if you're anywhere in flying or driving distance to Columbus next year, make it a point to be there.

Pens Stolen
      11/7/2000:  Frank Crescioni
Just got back form the Columbus Pen Show and it was a great show. Good people and a multitude of pens. Unfortunately on the trip back home, my car was broken into and I lost all my pens (~300)plus cases and display items. My pens consisted of predominantly British pens: Mabie Todd, Conway Stewart, Onoto, Croxley, etc. There were only a few readily identifible pens: a Swan 4 size Leverless in iridescent green snakeskin engraved Gwendolen (sp), a large Ford's Safety pen with a nib with very small tines and large blob of iridium, a Parker 51 with a repoussed silver cap in snake motif (South American), and a large sterling pen and pencil set in a Mappin and Webb box. Mike Carter was also travelling with me and he also lost everything including a gold Hamilton Flight wristwatch. This occurred in Lafayette, IN. The Lafayette police case number is 2000-1454. I would appreciate hearing about it if anyone is offered a large quantity of British pens. Thanks, -frank

New Fountain Pens etc. for Sale
      11/7/2000:  Bruce
Brand-new pens at great prices, some reduced since 10/16 ad. Waterman Carene, most colors, $125; Aurora Primavera (brilliant marble green) w/italic nib, $299 (cut from $325); Visconti Kaleido, $215 (cut from $215), Parker Duofold Centennial, med., $275, Internationals, $255. Rollerballs & ballpoints: Aurora Primavera RB, $225 (cut from $240); dark green marble Aurora Optima BP, $110; 5 Parker Duofold Centennial RBs, gray pearl, $168. State preferences for nibs, colors. Ask about other pens you're interested in. The ad policy urges sellers to advance enthusiasm for the hobby. No problem, since I'm a hobbyist who just happened to stumble on some pens I could offer at very low prices. I lose pens at an awful "clip." More attention should be given to "loss-resistance." Orange stands out like no other color amid piles of paper. That's why i love the Coral Red Waterman Carene.

Parker Pen Repair
      11/6/2000:  Stephen Lam
James, it will not be possible for fellow posters to respond to your post unless you tell us what's wrong with the cap. Furthermore, do you want someone to help you repair it and would like to find out how much it costs ? Or do you want someone to suggest the market value of such a pen ? Either way, more info is needed.

re: Bexley Inks
      11/6/2000:  Waco Johnny D
The only caution I'd advise is with respect to staining. Watch out for light-colored pens, pens that are porous, and transparent or semi-transparent piston/plunger-fill pens and pens with "ink-view" windows. If you are concerned about staining clear-plastic feeds/collectors then here also you should be concerned. Of the colors I have (the dark blue, the plum, the dark green, and the orange) the last is especially-nasty in this regard.

By the way, the red and orange have a stench that'll knock you right into next week, and I don't mean the nice sweet Waterman or Doctor smell either.

have junkers, parts pens you don't want? Here is an alternative.
      11/5/2000:  scaupaug@aol.com
I'll trade something mint and working for items that are old and not working. Perfect timing for the holidays. E-mail for links and pics of what I have to offer for sheaffer's and other imperfect parts pens you might want to turn into a gift item for the holidays....turn those parts sitting about into something of greater possible use to you. e-mail>>> scaupaug@aol.com

Columbus Pen Show
      11/5/2000:  Donald Lavin
I keep telling collectors that nothing beats a pen show. Dealers were selling off large quantities of parts which enabled me to complete some great projects I had going. I found numerous desk sets and desk set parts which required me to hire a bearer to get to the airport. The comoraderie this weekend was outstanding with a great mix of local and foreign collectors and dealers and a large number of collectors from all over the U.S. Lots of trading going on and prices keep fluctuating as the dynamics of the show keeps changing. Lots of ephemera and old inks available. Lots of ads, old letterheads, blotters, you name it. And meeting old friends is always a great pleasure as well as meeting new collectors so try to get out and support pen shows especially your local shows, if you are lucky enough to be in an area which has a pen show once a year. I can safely say that you will be able to feed your "addition".

Wow! What a show. Great pens and great pen pals. Very busy from Thurs eve, Friday was the busiest Friday I've ever seen at a pen show. So far the hit of the show was meeting Mr. Dante Delvecchio from Visconti, introducing his magnificent hand painted "Dragon" pens, which are painted on the Millineum Arc, Off to the auction, more to report later, thanks to Dean for bringing his laptop for this on-site report.

Digital camera and others
      11/4/2000:  Stephen Lam
Richard, I have used several digital cameras. My current one is a 3.34 megapixel model. If you want a camera to take pictures for eBay purposes, it is important for you to select one with a macro mode, to take close ups of imprints and nibs. For such purposes, a 1 mega pixel model is good enough. If you want to use it for family snapshots and you like to make reasonably large prints, you need to get more megapixels to get better details. With your budget, I think you have a good numbers of models to choose from in the 1 to 2 megapixel range. Incidentally, I find my flatbed scanner also a very good tool to make pictures of pens for eBay purposes. With a good photo editing software, you can get very good results using even a basic flatbed scanner.

Digital cameras
      11/4/2000:  Richard Rosen
Thanks Andrew for the info on your new digital camera. I've been shopping for a Mavica 73. It's a large bulky camera because it stores the images on a floppy. I understand it's so popular because of its ease of use. It's supposed to be great for close-ups and the cost is now about $475. Any comments, from anyone?

Bohler Pen
      11/3/2000:  Dave
I've got an interesting vest-pocket fountain pen I'm trying to get some more info on. Its a duofold copy, with a pattern in the plastic that looks something like the Parker "televisor" It is a button filler, with a black blind cap. It reads "original Bohler" on the cap, and has a stylized HZ enameled onto the cap tassie. Any ideas? Thanks.

Digital cameras and pens
      11/3/2000:  Andrew J. Gnoza, III
I just purchased a new Sony Cyber Shot DSC-S70. This is my 3rd digital camera in 5 years ( AGFA e307 and Mavica 7 ) and by far the best of the lot. The S70 is equipped with a 3x, 7 to 21mm Carl Zeiss, Vario-Sonnar lens (equivalent to a 34 to 102mm lens on a 35mm camera). Zeiss optics are noted for their sharpness, and the lens is a significant feature of the camera. Focus can be automatically or manually controlled, with a number of preset distances for you to choose from. A 2x digital telephoto function can be turned on and off through the Record menu and increases the S70's zoom capabilities to 6x. The S70 performs excellent in macro mode as well, with distances ranging from 1.62 inches (4cm) to 8 inches (20cm) - GREAT for taking pictures of pens, nibs and markings in superb detail. Images can be saved as uncompressed TIFF, JPEGs, MPEG1s or GIFs depending on the record mode and are stored on a Memory Stick - with the ability to store close to 1000 images on a 64MB stick! With a price of $629 from www.chaseshop.com it's something to consider. Dr. I's image of a Parker Vac using the S70 at: http://www.gulftel.com/~gnoza/redbox.jpg

The Pelikan book has been out of print for a while now. They appear on eBay every once in a while, and forsale at other places. You have a slight chance ordering it through a foreign bookdealer. This is how I bought mine, but I did this about two years ago.

I've Moved, Going to the Ohio Show
      11/1/2000:  Dean Tweeddale
Hi fellow Penlovers… well I’ve done it and have moved across the United States from Cleveland, Ohio to the Seattle, Washington area. Wasn’t an entirely easy task and had to be offline and away from cyberspace for about a week and a half. Now have reconnected and have a whole houseful of moving boxes (486 to be exact). Despite all of that I will be leaving tomorrow for the Ohio Pen Show, this show promises to be one of the best of the year. Lots of great reasons to get to this show even if you have to make last minute plans to get there. Tables are all sold out with collectors and dealers coming from everywhere. A great show to get some of your early Christmas shopping done or to help you make your wish list. PenLovers.net will be online at the show so stop by the table say hi and post a message to those that couldn’t be at the show. Don’t forget to bring your appetites to the Friday night Pizza party brought to you by PenLovers.net. But leave room for the Desert party on Saturday night brought to you by show organizers Terry and Sonya Mawhorter. See all at the Ohio Show. One final note my email address has changed so if applicable please make a note of it. deant@seanet.com . I will be changing the email links on Penlovers site ASAP. Dean Tweeddale
