Rudi's message looks (IMHO) to be in Finnish. Sorry, I might be able to recognize the language, but I can't translate it.

Looks like Japanese and ??? to me. If any Penlovers readers can communicate back in their native language, I'm sure Penlovers would be happy to have them join the discussion board, and graciously welcome them.

Chicago Pen Auction Update - 75s
      3/31/2002:  Don Lavin
Good morning Pen Lovers. First a healthy and happy Easter and Passover to one and all. Now on the pen front, there has been a lot of interest shown in the upcoming Chicago Pen Show auction so I will try to highlight some of the most interesting items to be offered, on a regular basis. As there is considerable interest in Parker 75s these days so I am pleased to announce that we are offering some of the rarest and most wonderful Parker 75s again this year. Models to be sold include: 1. unique, possibly model shop, WHITE gold filled, lined, with early flat top and bottom, section with metal threads and a stub nib; 2. Rare full rainbow FP; 3. Rare full rainbow 75 BP; 4. New, never used, 14 kt Presidential FP and BP awarded by Parker to an employee with 50 years of service from 1923 to 1973 with inscription on both pieces; 5. Nib only, experimental, ultra broad, left oblique, hand made and ground by Dean Hackbarth, Supervisor of the Parker gold nib dept. in the 70s; 6. Silver cross-hatch model with rare blue dark blue plastic section 7. 3 different NOS French 75s in white metal and gf metal with interesting patterns. In addition there are a number of other 75s in the action including RB, BP and FP and sets. Action on these lots should be hot and heavy.

Esterbrook
      3/31/2002:  Stefan Nilsson
Iam interested in knowing how an Esterbook plunger filler works. Is is a steel capped plastic pen on which you can unscrew the blind cap and then pump about 20 mm. Is is like the Sheaffers (pressing a bladder with the air or is it as old Onotoes some vac system. Common or more scarce. Stefan N

Looking for a stainless Vector
      3/30/2002:  John
I'm looking for a stainless steel Parker Vector fountain pen (I'm giving my plastic one a slow and painful death, I'm afraid). I'm having some pretty serious trouble locating such a thing in the USA. I have lately been told that the Vector has been discontinued, though I've seen several overseas websites which list it for sale. If you can come up with such a beast in good condition and for a reasonable price, please let me know. TIA

Venlo Pen Cases
      3/30/2002:  Marv
I am looking for a Venlo leather pen case that hold s 10 pens or something comparable at a decent price. Can anyone suggest places that sell them. Thanks

Duofold Orange Details
      3/30/2002:  Esther
This is a modern Parker Duofold Centennial flat-top in Orange. There is a Fountain Pen with a Fine nib, and a Pencil. They come in a grey "velvet" box with an outer black box. Both items seem to be mint. It looks as if the pen has never been inked, probably not even dipped. It has the golden paper sticker on the clip. The Orange color is very desireable and harder to find in this condition. Thank you and Happy Holiday!

Chicago Pen Club Meeting April 7, Sun 2pm
      3/29/2002:  Len Provisor
Our next meeting will be held Sunday April 7 at 2pm at the offices of member Rob Scheuneman's STUDIO NORTH. Located at 1616 Green Bay Road in North Chicago, IL 60064. Exit Route 120 from either Edens Hwy (41) or IL 294 Tri-State and go east to Green Bay Road, then south until you see the large metal SN sign on the right (west) side of street. You can put this address into www.mapquest.com for a printable map & directions. Bring anything pen/ink related for show-and-tell or discussion. Also feel free to bring anything you have that you wish to sell, trade or barter. This is our last meeting before the big Chicago Pen Show May 3-5 which is really going to be exciting this year with Parker - Waterman as sponsors, and also the attndance of Geoffrey and Steven Parker who will be exhibiting some personal family archive materials. The conference room we will be meeting in has a 24" x 36" plasma NEC monitor that gives an incredible image, so we may even cruise some interesting web sites. Don Lavin may have an update on the 300 piece pen auction for the show also, just maybe the auction will be printed so we can get an exclusive preview. Hope to see many of you there. Len Provisor

Condolences to the George Brown family
      3/29/2002:  Len Provisor
I am very sorry to hear of George's passing. I only knew him for the last 5 years or so, seeing him mostly at his home state Ohio and Chicago pen shows. George was a big guy, and when you shook hands with him your hand was lost in his meaty grip. He could probably stand close to William "The Fridge" Perry from the '85 Chicago Bears, but he was really more of a gentle bear. He may have looked intimidating at first glance, but everyone really enjoyed meeting him at any shows. George always had real neat "stuff", besides pens and I always anticipated finding something very different with a typical George Brown story attached. I'll long remember George and his humor, always in a manner that uniquely cut to the point of the matter, and ended with a laugh. I make it a practice at every pen show I attend, I walk the entire floor and say a cordial "hello" to everyone, and once again after the show bidding a safe trip home. This reminds me once again, what really matters in the end is how people feel and talk about you after you are gone.

Dr. Zwiren
      3/29/2002:  Richard Jarvis
I was saddened to hear of the death of Dr. Gerald Zwiren, the long-time organizer of the Atlanta Pen Show. I had helped him some with the show this year and just gotten to know him as he worked to improve the show along with Jimmy Dolive of Total Office Products. This year's show was one of the best ever and I know he was pleased about it. Prayers to his family during this time. Richard

Condolences to the Zwerin family
      3/28/2002:  Len Provisor
I am very sorry to hear of his passing. Dr. Zwiren was well known, highly respected and on a few occassions, I had the pleasure to share exhibit tables at several pen shows. He was one of the few men I've met with a special air about himself that was obvious, at least to me. An ever present smile, always soft spoken, when he spoke I listened carefully, and it just seemed right to always address him as Dr. Zwiren. I'm richer for having known him.

Pelikan Toledo M700
      3/28/2002:  Joni
Hi, Does anyone have a Pelikan Toledo M700? I cannot find out how big and heavy this pen is. Does anyone know? It sounds like it's between a M800 and a M600. Perhaps it's exactly M600 size? Also how heavy is the pen?

Suitable Black Ink
      3/28/2002:  Adrian Jones
Hi Folks, My place of work requires black ink. I have Sheaffer's red, green and blue Skrip inks - all work fine. However, the black ink bleeds badly on the paper we use (basic Xerox quality stuff. Has anyone come across a non-clogging, black ink that does not bleed? Many thanks for any suggestions as I am planning on doing a bunch of writing soon and I would like to use my fountain pen! Regards, Adrian

Death of Dr. Gerry Zwiren
      3/28/2002:  Lee Chait

Re: MB Boheme FP
      3/28/2002:  Samantha
There are two models of the Boheme FP. One is retractable as mentioned by "No One", and the other is fixed. The fixed FP uses a converter that you access by unscrewing the body. Then of course you just dip the nib in the ink and twist the bottom of the converter to draw the ink. Remember to release 4 drops of ink before you tighten the converter with nib pointing upward. Always use a lint free, oil free cloth to remove any excess ink from the nib. Do not rub the cloth on the feeder. If you would like our Customer Service Line it is 1800 995 4810. Hope this is helpful.

Sheaffer calligraphy nibs
      3/27/2002:  Laurent Hodges
Jim Landrum asked if the cheap Sheaffer calligraphy nibs could be used on a "nicer" pen. YES!!! They fit perfectly on the current Balance II and on the older Connaisseur and Grand Connaisseur pens, including the current Levenger "Seas" pens as well as the Royal Selangor Bamboo pen. The steel nibs look great on a Jade green Balance II, on the Royal Selangor, and on the sterling silver Grand Connaisseur. Their caps fit back on perfectly, too. (Save the old 14K or 18K nib, of course!) Instead of buying the cheap Sheaffer calligraphy pens one at a time, buy the 3-nib set. There is also a calligraphy set under $100 with several calligraphy nibs to fit Prelude pens instead; it comes with a Prelude but can be put on a nicer Prelude, if you prefer. Go to www.PenLovers.net and buy these from Pendemonium or probably other advertisers. Also remember that some of the current Sheaffers have italic nibs available (usually called "stub" by Sheaffer, but really italic nibs) - the Balance II (pretty good) and the Legacy II (a really great italic nib).

I think the boheme only takes cartigides. I don't have one but here's what I saw. It's real easy. The end of the pen is hinged. Retract the nib. Flip the end of the pen at the hinge and snap in a new cartigide. Retracting the nib will move the cartigide unit closer to the end of the barrel. If there's a MB

shaeffer pen
      3/26/2002:  Ed Cumings
dear all--Have an old snorkel filling shaeffer pen maybe 40 years old. Trouble filling it---all appears normal--bladder is sound. It wont draw ink and the pump action appears to have less 'pumping feel' than I recall. ifill it using a match to depress the bladder and an eye dropper at the snorkel. Does this pen have an 'o'ring or any special sealas part of the action? what typicaly are causes and cures for this? Pen is just fabulous otherwise. Just the snorkel filler not operating. Any help much appreciated.

A taste of Chicago Pen Show
      3/26/2002:  Len Provisor
The Chicago Pen Show has a reputation as a mecca for vintage pen trading, and with a huge attendance of new pen dealers as well. There will be over 200 tables wall to wall and overflowing into the halls on Sunday. This year the sponsor of the show is Parker - Waterman. Be prepared for some surprise announcements by Parker. Geoffrey S. Parker and his brother Steven will also be attending the show and will exhibit at a selection of artifacts from his personal family archives. Never shown before to the public, this will be a most anticipated presentation. Geoffrey and Steven look forward to meeting and talking with show exhibitors and guests. Dealers and collectors start getting their vintage pen fix as early as Wednesday with early arrivals, especially overseas visitors who like to get an early taste of Chicago sights. Lots to see downtown which is a quick cab or easy train ride from the Westin O'Hare airport location. Chicago Entertainment and restaurant info : http://metromix.com/top/1,1419,M-Metromix-Music-X!Front,00.html Trading rooms open up Thurs eve but if you stroll the lobby before you'll see groups huddled in lounge chairs peering into pen cases for early pickin's. If anything like last year a good crowd already assembles by Thurs eve, and Friday is dead serious scrambling by early buyers with a taste for vintage pen. It's always a polite, "Howdy, howudoin'what'sinthepencase?" and sometimes a good idea to just wear a badge that says "Don't trample, Just lookin'". If any Pentracers need an official bright yellow Snailee badge e-mail me I'll send you a few before the show. Friday nite is Blues Night with a trip to Buddy Guy's Legends Blues Club. Dinner and Blues for a real taste of Chicago. Hotel busses leave the lobby area promptly at 7pm, $20./person round trip, returning sometime after 12-1 or so. Guaranteed good time and a great Cajun, traditional or veggie dinner. Check the doin's and menu at www.buddyguys.com Saturday is a serious trading day and the anticipated Auction of over 300 lots of vintage pens and ephemera. Really my favorite event, I love the moans, the groans and the laughs as bidders fight for every item. Saturday night is the Amateur Jam Session, meeting 9-ish in the room where the auction will be held. We'll have stage, lights and sound, so if you pick a guitar, banjo or play harmonica or anything else, bring it and join the fun. Strictly amateur, and some not-so-amateur, lots of fun. Prizes and gifts for all performers. Sunday is show time...crowds come early and it's busy all day long with everything to see that even remotely related to pens, including papers, inks, journals, ephemera and even some vintage watches from some dealers. If you have not already made hotel reservations, pick up the phone now and do so, rooms are going fast. Click on show link on Home Page for more information. Look forward to seeing you all there.

Sorry for the "me too" post, but what the heck. Everyone chimes in on the bad stuff, why not the good, too? As Don notes, the websites of Jim Gaston and Bill Acker are quite the treasure trove of useful info. Bill's vac info is quite nice. Learned and learn tons from it. I would add a couple websites which, in addition to the usual pens-for-sale thing, offer great learning- these included the sites run by David Nishimura and by Tony Fischier. Regards, David.

Jim Gaston and Bill Acker
      3/25/2002:  Don Lavin
Rick mentioned the wealth of information he was able to obtain from Jim Gaston's web site. For those of you relatively new to pen collecting note that some long standing collectors have performed considerable services to the pen collecting community and go unnoticed for the most part. Bill Acker and Jim Gaston have been collecting pens for many years and both have stepped up to give the pen community time and effort and excellent and outstanding service. Both Jim and Bill for many years were and are the moderators of the Compuserve Pen Collecting Board. They encouraged new collectors and assisted everyone with good advice about collecting, repairs and anything pertaining to vintage pens and collecting. Then both Bill and Jim produced very high quality web sites, not only offering pens for sale, but great information. Jim's site in particular is sensational and his vintage advertising section is a treasure trove of information for all collectors. Jim's web site is www.jimgaston.com and Bill's is www.billspens.com. Try them - you'l like them. Don

those by osmiroid are the best. the body looks even worse than sheaffer, but the nib is splendid. it is so thin that thick vs thin contrasts are emphasized for even the smallest nib widths. sheaffer is OK, but osmiroid RULES! you can still find some british made (by sanford co.) osmies at www.paperinkarts.com/ ask for their paper catalog. (BTW, osmiroid is now a chinese company, and their pens are reputed to stink.)

Chicago Pen Show Auction Report
      3/25/2002:  Don Lavin
Hello Penlovers. Time for the first of a number of reports on the biggest and best pen auction in the U.S. The estimated 300 lot live pen auction this year will again, be exceptional and will once again be conducted by Roberta from Susanin’s Auctions. Roberta is a wonderful professional auctioneer who has entertained our crowd several times in the past and who is in demand. More pens and ephemera and an emphasis on rare and beautiful. Color catalogs will be available for purchase several weeks before the show. Lots in various price ranges will be featured, with some very high quality and rare items as well. The auction web page will be updated very soon. PFM collectors take note. We have a number of very fine PFM items on consignment for the auction including a very scarce gray PFM III, a PFM nib test box with 3 PFM IIIs, 2 different PFM IIs and a PFM II pencil. We are also awaiting a blue PFM IV. Most of the pens are in mint condition with the original white labeling on the barrels. For Pen World collectors we have also received a consignment of the complete Vols. 1 and 2 which means you now have an opportunity to obtain the first 8 issues!

Thanks Rick
      3/25/2002:  Don Lavin
I want to thank Rick for his kind words and to remind Penlovers that there are a number of veteran collectors who review this board from time to time and who are willing to assist anyone with questions about vintage pens. Whereas I would like to be able to assist collectors on newer pens and on inks and the like, the fact is, I cannot keep up with all of the new products and frankly I am still in awe of vintage pens. They have given me great pleasure over the years and are responsible for my meeting and befriending a great group of people from many countrys. Besides, when it comes to inks, I use anything, old, new whatever. Assorted colors to match the pens, makes little difference to me. Just remember to flush your pens out from time to time. So if anyone has questions about vintage pens, or collecting, feel free to keep the posts coming and e-mail me in addition in case I miss the post. Don

Why DEan Tweeddale is my HERO today !!
      3/25/2002:  Len Provisor
Maybe no one noticed over the weekend, but my website www.inkblotters.com was lost without any hope of reconstruction on Saturday. It took a few years of work to compile all the imagery of my custom ink blotters, and a huge amount of work on the part of Dean Tweeddale to construct the pages on my vintage Parker Duofold and Beechcraft airplane models. Dean even took all incredible photos of the plane models that are so stunning and lifelike. When I realized the site was gone I was totally crushed, I called Dean immediately and he calmly told me he has a back up. Dean was not my host, it was not his responsibility to create a total back up of my site, it was a consideration he had for me, his customer, even though he was only doing a part of the work. I am incredibly grateful for his forethought and professional manner. My good friend Donal Higgins from Pentrace.com has also offered to "mirror" my website so I have a double back insurance. If any of you have a website, don't think for a minute the impossible can not happen. Make a back up for insurance, and if you happen to be lucky enough to work with Dean Tweeddale, you are in GOOD hands. Thank you Dean, may you never ever have another gall stone.

Calligraphy pens
      3/25/2002:  Jim Landrum
Does anyone know: I have yet to find a better, smoother-writing, simpler calligraphy pen than the "cheapie" made by Shaeffer - abt $4.00. But it would be great to take that point and put it on a larger, "nicer" body. I have tried a dozen other calligraphy pens, all much more expensive, and NONE of them measure up to the Shaeffer. Any comments?

Pelikan question
      3/25/2002:  Mark Sutherland
Hi: I am a new FP enthusiast. I bought a Pelikan 800 with a medium nib. I wonder if it's normal. The pen leaves a blob of ink every time I stop moving my hand. I've never used this pen before. Is this what I should expect?

Re: What Brand of Bottle Ink?
      3/25/2002:  Skip Williams
Paper will make the biggest difference. A nice, coated paper will reduce the bleed. Recycled crap and copier paper will be the worst. Black inks vary by surface tension and by color. The "thinner" inks typically flow faster through the pens as they wet the feed better are are drawn out into the paper fibers quicker. Pelikan is very black and would be a good first choice. Relatively "thick". Private Reserve Velvet Black will be "thinner" but almost as black. Waterman and Sheaffer are thin and somewhat grey Aurora Black is nice, black, and very permanent Parker Quink Black is thinner There are probably about 10 others. I'd start with Peilian (or Cross, they're the same ink), PR, and Aurora. But it depends on what you can find. Greg Clark is a good reference. See the internet for his Fountain Pen Sampler. I think he's at chirocycle@aol.com Skip

I'm always leary of people who are afraid to leave a real name, but are anxious for you to contact them with orders for merchandise. This one wants you to believe he's soliciting for a montblanc boutique, sounds alittle unkosher to me. If you like paying retail you can do it in person at any boutique.

Waterman help
      3/25/2002:  Rick Kalamaya
My profuse gratitude to Don Lavin for his kind response to my question about Waterman Ripple pens. And his suggestion to go to Jim Gaston's site to look up ads was a real winner! I have bought a pen from Jim Gaston who must be one of the finest people around, or at least it appears so on the surface. And I have been to his site using the same fountain pen links on Bill's Fountain Pen page I use to get here. But I had no idea what a resource that was. I went there this morning and was amazed at all the old ads you can access and how much information can be had from the old ads. Thanks again, Don. Rick

What brand of bottle ink?
      3/25/2002:  Dani
I will be getting a new Pelikan M600 and will be needing bottled ink for it. I have an extra fine nib and write slowly. What brand of black ink should I use? I guess I like fairly dark black and I don't hate it when the ink bleeds. Any suggestions?

Updates to the FILCAO website
      3/24/2002:  Giovanni Abrate
Many new updates have been added to the FILCAO website http://abrax.isiline.it/pens/ New pictures, a company profile in German with some nice photographs, the story of FILCAO in English and Italian (pictures in the Italian version) and new photos of pens in the catalog and through the website. Click on the thumbnails to see enlarged pictures of the pens. Some of these new articles can be accessed from the Home Page, some from the Catalog page. For those interested in pen history, there are also articles on the pen makers of Settimo, the center of pen manufacturing in Italy and many historical pictures of pens, factories and pen making tools (this part of the site is unchanged). Enjoy. Giovanni

Waterman 7 on Ebay
      3/23/2002:  Don Lavin
Just after I posted my response to Rick's inquiry about Waterman 7 I found this on Ebay - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1086097774 Rob's description is pretty accurate. Unfortunately this particular pen does not have "gray" marked on the nib. I have the gray cap and have been looking for the gray marked nib for years. Don

Waterman Ripple Assistance
      3/23/2002:  Don Lavin
Rick. The Waterman Ripple is indeed a classic. The #7 Ripple is just one of many many models produced by Waterman in Ripple hard rubber. It is a very popular pen, a very desireable and affordable collectible and the right one can be a wonderful daily user. First, there are different generations of Ripple 7s. Earliest models have the color band on the cap without the white separators. When the white disks were added it set off the color of the cap band. Same with the cap trim. Earlier models came without the gold filled band. Waterman came to realize that this exposed the cap lips to cracking so the band actually protects the cap. I prefer the later models with the white bands and the gold filled cap band because I feel that these pens are more attractive but that is personal. They certainly do not write any better than the other versions. The 7s are also popular because one is supposed to be able to identify the writing characteristics of the nib by the color of the band and the corresponding color impressed on the nib. The most common and one of the best writers is the Red model. More or less a standard writing nib. My favorite is the Blue - stub nib. Great writer! For me at least. But alas, the blue models are more costly , often selling for over $300. The purple models have very stiff nibs. Others are very flexible or have "ball" points. Any Waterman 7 ad will tell you about the characteristics of the pen. See Jim Gaston's web site for pen ads. I forgot his url but I can forward it to you if you do not know of it. Jim is a great asset to the pen collecting world and his web site has many vintage ads so I am sure that the 7 will be shown. Finally, do not overlook the ripple 52, 54 and 55s which come up from time to time. Again, fine writing instruments. And if you really get carried away, get the 94 series from the 30s in blue ripple, olive ripple and the very costly but gorgeous, rose ripple. Good luck and contact me if you need any info. I once tried to acquire all 7s but gave up when I could not find the very rare "gray" model or the beyond rare "black" model not to mention the ultra rare 7 with Toledo work from the 30s.

Waterman Ripple
      3/22/2002:  Rick
Hello: I have always received such kind advice on this board and I am once again requesting help from experts who have put hours into this hobby. I have a notion that a vintage pen most desirable for my modest collection is the Waterman Ripple. This pen is clearly a classic. And it appears that a number 7 is sort of a standard. What does one look for in the nib on these pens? Are the colored stripes a really big deal? I have seen some pens with GF cap bands and some without. Is the band a big deal? If I were going to add one of these pens to my collection, what would you advise? Just one. Rick

Parker mystery pen
      3/22/2002:  Paul
I found a very strange pen recently: it's a lot like a Parker 51, but with a Vacumatic filler and a regular nib. It has a cap just like my Flighter. What is this pen? Is the cap correct or is it a Flighter cap? Any information gratefully received. Photo available at: http://www.boomspeed.com/plemay/parker.jpg

Re: What's that thing called?
      3/22/2002:  Floaty
Everybody names their “things” differently but I believe that the name of the pen you are describing is a “Floaty pen”. Thousands of different ones made from the “X rated” ones to advertising ones and everything in between. Most I think, were or are made in Denmark.

Chicago Pen Show Update
      3/21/2002:  Don Lavin
I previously announced that Sailor Corporation will be presenting nib designer, Mr. Nagahara and his son at the show. I have now learned more about Mr. Nagahara, who is also known in Japan as “the Nib Doctor”. Along with being the Senior Nib Designer for Sailor, he also does his “Pen Doctor” program in pen shops and at pen shows in Japan. Mr. Nagahara’s son will accompany him and assist him during the show. Mr. Nagahara will be doing his “Pen Doctor” show at Chicago where he will adjust and personalize nibs for anyone who would like this done to their own personal fountain pens! For obvious reasons, his repairs and adjustments will be limited to those nibs he can do immediately. He will not be bringing work back to Japan. And he will be working on non-Sailor pens as well as Sailor pens. He will also be bringing examples of his unique nibs for display purposes. On another front, the one and only Judd Perlson has graciously offered to sponsor the Thursday night Pizza and Cola party on the 12th floor. Judd is a close friend of ours and he really loves the camaraderie of fellow pen collectors. To show his thanks this will be the second year he has offered to do a pizza party and if is anything like last year’s feast, early attendees will have an enjoyable treat.

Any assistance in locating such a site is appreciated. Thanks, -Karlly

Montblanc Boheme Ballpoint Noir
      3/18/2002:  Dan
You folks seem to know a lot about pens, so I ask you: How in the world can I find a montblanc boheme noir ballpoint (black/platinum), THE EARLY VERSION, which had only one platinum ring (where the name is) not the current model that has 3 rings. I received one as a gift, treasured it, and lost it. Need to replace, but seems to be unavailable. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. DM

travel inkpots
      3/18/2002:  Jocelyn
Can anyone tell me whether there is a travel inkpot that can be used with a level-filler pen? I'm disgusted, having spent some time looking @ Visconti's models, which say you CANNOT use them with a rubber bladder, level-filler, button-filler, etc., but which costs around $42 for the "Classic" model, and then spending nearly an hour on the phone with Levenger's (the only other seller of travel inkpots I can find), who says yes, they sell the "older" model "Classic" from Visconti (under their name), and it CAN be used with a level-filler, BUT it costs $70 after 30% sale discount!. Sorry for the vent. I really would like to have a convenient way to carry ink, but don't want to be ripped off or have to pay postage to send it back because it won't fill my 1929 Swan. Thanks!

M-B Fountain Pen
      3/18/2002:  Mort E
I am new to using a fountain pen. Over the years I have always had Mont Blanc ball pens. So when I decided to by a fountain pen I bought a 75th aniversary Mont Blanc 149. I am having a hard time using it. At the last pen show I went to I had the nib adjusted, because it skippped. It helped alot. The problem is I dont know if I use too much pressure when I write or if the pen is too big for my hand. After I write a few pages my hand is real tired.I was told it is supposed to be easier to write with a fountain pen than a ball or roller. Does anyone else have this problem with their fountain pen?

re: Aurora nib

Nope, Aurora is known for quality nib work. You probably have a simple tine misalignment, very easy to fix. You can get one of the legion of pen repair men to do it for you (IMHO a waste of money and a waste of their time) or do it yourself. Start with Frank Dubiel's "Guide to Fountain Repair and Restoration" available directly from him. He's at FDubiel@aol.com. While you're waiting for delivery of "Da Book" get yourself a few cheap pens to practice on (Arcamax usually has cheap Sheaffers for sale) as well as a good 10x loupe (available from various places on the Web).

re: ink drying
      3/18/2002:  Waco Johnny D
If the ink is drying when the cap is off, then just put the cap back on until you're ready to write again, or go to a dip pen/nib. As for using a FP to cure yourself of pressing too hard, if you can do it with a FP then you can do it with a RB or gel. If your writing habits/preferences preclude your slipping a cap on and off frequently and you don't want to press down hard, then there is no reason whatsoever you shouldn't move to a RB or gel pen today and for good. No reason to beat yourself up, after all. There's no law that says you have to use a FP! ;-)

Parker 51 date codes
      3/17/2002:  Len Provisor
David, thanks for the correction. I assure you that was a typo on my part, I know that a "6-er" on a 51-er is really a "46-er", even 'tho da fin-ger did a slip-per.

Aurora nib
      3/17/2002:  Charles I
I'm relatively new to limited edition fps and my first Aurora is a Jubilaem with a fine nib. The nib performs terribly. It literally scratches across the page. I've sent the pen back to Aurora for an unrelated problem and when it returned the nib seemed even worse. Does Aurora have a history of nib problems? Any suggestions out there?

Parker 51 date code
      3/17/2002:  David Nishimura
Sorry Len, have to correct you: that's the code for 1946, not '56. The single-digit-with-dots code was used up until 1949; from 1950, the code was 50, 51, etc. (though Canadian pens are a bit different). The latest US date code I recall seeing on a 51 is something like 54. Please note that a full discussion of the Parker date code is available on our website, www.vintagepens.com, under the FAQ section.

Parker 51date codes
      3/17/2002:  Len Provisor
Paul, your Parker 51 was made in 1956. Take another look and see if you can spot any dots before, after or below the #6. First quarter of year: ... with 6 over middle dot Second quarter of year: .6. They knock off the bottom dot. Third quarter of year: 6. Left dot is knocked off. Fourth quarter of year: 6 No dots. This method was used from 1941 up to I believe 1950, whewn date codes were dropped. Someone correct me if I am mistaken, thanks.

ink drying
      3/17/2002:  Steve
hi:i am a southpaw and long time fountain pen user. i started using fountain pens cos i have a bad habit of pressing down too hard on the pen, which leads to writer's cramp, thus i can write longer and in less pain with a fountain pen nib. i usually clean my nibs once every few months with a 10% ammonia solution or higgins' cleaner, whatever i have at the time. being a lefty, i usually use parker quink ink, as anything that is more brilliant (pelikan), takes longer to dry and smudges more readily. my main problem with the quink is that it seems to dry TOO quickly, even inside the pen! whenever i take a pause to think while writing, i have to start dipping the nib in water to get it going again. i've been told that bottled ink goes bad after two years and should be disposed of, how true is this? i was thinking about adding a few drops of glycerin to the parker ink. will this work, or will it simply gum up the works? any info will be greatly appreciated, as i'm already a partial rollerbal gel convert :O but i am not quite ready to give up on my fountain pens. thanks in advance, steve

Weekend find
      3/16/2002:  Paul LeMay
I haven't found a decent pen in ages at my local flea markets. Today I stumbled across an old set, Parker 51 pen with pencil. It is a double jeweled model with a 16k G/F cap. Not bad for one dollar. It has a plastic filler button and the inscription is near the clutch ring, says Parker 51 6. Any idea what year this was made? Thanks. Hope you all had a nice weekend too.

Namiki Falcon leaking
      3/16/2002:  Bobcat
I have bought two Namiki Falcon pen and both leak ink from the nib to the point where my fingers and hand get stained with ink. One of them I had returned for repair and it still leaked ink. I sent it to LA for repair and it still leaked. I just returned it for warranty repair again. Unfortunately I bought another Falcon and that one leaks too. Is this common or I am just unlucky. I am a fan of Namiki pens but this is quite a disappointment.

Fun events planned for Chicago Pen Show
      3/14/2002:  Len Provisor
More fun at Chicago Pen Show Besides a terrific pen show, Chicago has some terrific fun and entertainment lined up for the weekend. My fellow instigator is Sandy “Blues Babe Bus Mom” Andina and we’ve arranged an evening taste of Chicago Blues and some unforgettable food. Chicago is world famous for it’s Blues clubs and restaurants. Get ready for a real treat. Friday night Blues Night. We meet in the hotel lobby to leave at 7:00 sharp to travel via hotel buses ($20. round trip/person) to Buddy Guy’s Legend’s Club WWW.BUDDYGUYS.COM Here the Blues entertainment is hot and the Cajun and Soul food is even hotter. Mild food is an option, the music is not. Last year we were incredibly lucky to see John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers on their world tour. We had a great time, super seating, and we all ended up with CD’s, posters and caps. And I can’t believe I actually talked to John Mayall and Buddy Guy, they also signed our CD’s and posters. No reservations needed, just show up at 7pm in hotel lobby with an appetite for great Blues and hot soul food. Great menu, lots of Veggie choices, too. Visit the Buddy Guy website to see the menu and review the entertainment. Buddy Guy has also donated prizes for the Saturday Night Jam Session at the hotel, which will be located in the hotel Auction Room Forum, starting around 9-ish. We invite any person attending the show to visit the Jam Session and we’ll be passing the guitars. We are really semi-pro’s, but we have lights, stage, sound and screaming fans. Very informal, amateur and some not-so-amateur friends will perform. Some friends such as Jake “Hot Lips” Engel from FPH on harp, Detlef Bittner on bass, John Woo from Hawaii who never leaves home without his pick and he’s pretty good, Sandy Andina has already cut a CD and she's pretty good. Mitch Lavin may also come with his band. You just gotta see this. More hype on these fun pen show events later.

Chicago Pen Show Update
      3/14/2002:  Don Lavin
Another major attraction for our show again this year is the attendance of Roger Cromwell and Victor Chen of Penoply. Roger and Victor will be set up throughout the weekend to provide on-site pen repairs. This is a very important for dealers and collectors at a show. In some instances worried buyers can have Roger evaluate a pen and give a repair estimate before completing their purchase. In other instances dealers can have Roger do a quick repair to help make a sale. It is a win-win situation for dealers and buyers alike. And if that were not enough Roger does sell fine vintage pens as well as performing first rate repairs. As in the past, the show this year is a very concerted effort to gather well known vintage and modern dealers and manufacturers. The estimated 200 table blend is about 65% vintage and 35% new. Familiar retailers such as FPH of New York, Total Office Supply, Bittner, Airline International, Bertram’s Inkwell, and The Franklin Co. will again be in attendance together with a number of manufacturers such as Bexley, Aurora, Retro 51, Platinum, Yafa and Delta. There are always “Show Specials” and bargains will be everywhere. Besides pens, many accessories such as books, inks, papers, nibs, parts and ephemera will be available. And of course, FREE ink blotters from many exhibitors. We look forward to seeing you all here in May.

Old Waterman gold filigree ftn pen
      3/12/2002:  Ed Nash
Looking thru the postings here, I see nothing at all re any early 20th century Waterman fountain pens, especially like mine that has scrolling gold filigree around it (I will email image). I am willing to sell it, but have not established a mkt value as yet - maybe somebody can help. The end of the pen has the number 0512 on it. This gorgeous treasure was bought new by my great uncle, whose elaborate initials are in the cartouche, and it has been in the family, unused for many, many years, ever since. It is in fine condition, and I have not attempted to polish the filigree, but it still glows. Is it alive?

20 place hand made English pen cases from Classic Pens
      3/12/2002:  Andreas Lambrou
Dear Colleagues, For those of you who frequent pen shows, you are most probably aware of our English hand made 20 place pen cases, which are in a book format. The cases are hand crafted out of solid wood. The tray holding the pens (20 places) is again carved by hand and then lined with a sulphur free velvet. The external covering of these beautiful cases is of the highest quality and there is a choice of colors and designs. The velvet lining always compliments the external cover. These cases can hold pen sizes from fairly small to the very large Waterman 58 size and of course modern large pens, such as Pelikan 1000, Montblanc 149. I am pleased to advise that we have just received a shipment from England of 20 cases. Please contact us back channel for colors available and pricing. We accept payment by credit card, personal check, money order and Paypal. Regards, Andy Lambrou E-mail: ClasPenInc@aol.com Tel: 1-323-658-7367.... Fax: 1-323-658-8886

Need a Section
      3/12/2002:  Mike Cameron
I need to replace a clear plastic (yeah, it's a little weird) section for an old Diamond Point fountain pen. Anybody have one?

Re: parker and sheaffer old fountain pens (vincegreco)
      3/12/2002:  Richard
More information is required before any identification can be attempted. Here are a whole bunch of questions to which the answers would be useful. Does the Parker have a gold nib or a steel one? Does it have a little gold arrow embedded above the nib? How long is it, measured with the cap on? Does the Sheaffer have a metal cap or a plastic one? Does the cap have a white dot above the clip? If metal, is the cap gold or silver colored, and if silver, does it have a gold band at the edge? If plastic, how wide is the cap band? Is the nib a conical wraparound nib or a standard "open" nib? Is the nib gold, two-tone, or silver colored? How long is the pen? The very best information would be scans or good photos of the pens, posted somewhere on the Web for people to look at. Good luck.

Carmen Rivera has generously placed a scan of the New England Pen Show brochure on the web. Here's the link: http://www.riverapens.com/PenShows/BostonFlier02.PDF You can still get the discounted Registratant price of $45 regularly $50)until March 20, and there are still tables and special rate rooms available for those of you who are thinking of attending. And the April 14-15 weekend will be a great time to be in Boston: not only will there be beautiful weather (well, we hope!), but you can also witness the 106th running of the Boston Marathon on Monday the 15th. Tiffany Sterling Meisterstuck Fountain Pen Set
      3/12/2002:  bruce slawinski
For Sale: Mont Blanc Meisterstuck Tiffany and Company 925 Sterling Silver Fountain Pen Set in the Barley pattern. It includes both the fountain pen and the mechanical pencil. The set without the Tiffany Engraving probably retailed for about $1,400 originally. I received it from a friend as a gift and while it is not brand new,the fountain pen has never been filled, dipped, or used. It comes in a suede Tiffany & Co presentation box with the logo on the inside. It has gold bands around the middle with Meisterstuck in gold. The top of the pen has the familiar Mont Blanc black and white emblem. The nib has both gold and silver colors and the lettering 4810 / 18K / 750. The mechanical pencil is a Barley pattern match for the fountain pen and has 5mm lead. Both the fountain pen and the mechanical pencil have a gold clip with the lettering "TIFFANY & CO" engraved on them. The pen is approximately 5 1/4" long and the pencil is approximately 5 1/2" long. Both are 1/2" in diameter. There is a package of lead and a package of 10 black ink cartridges below the velvet pen holder. Please contact offline: bss@iname.com if interested.

Pelikan 596 Celebry
      3/11/2002:  Ron
I recently bought a Pelikan P 596 (gold plated version) Celebry FP and pencil from Regina Martini, and really like the set. But she doesn't have any of the matching ballpoints. With the new Parker jotter RB refills, I wouldn't mind having the matching BP for those rare occasions when you have to carry one. Does anyone know where I might find one? The pen should be new or nearly new.

New Re: Pen Haven/Bert Heiserman
      3/10/2002:  Bernadette Landolf
Hiya folks, Bert wanted me to let y'all know that he's taking a bit of a vacation at Shadygrove Hospital courtesy of his gallbladder. The shop was closed this weekend, and, unfortunately, the humorless folks at Shadygrove won't let him work on pens in his room (What! No heatguns allowed!? No lathes?!) So, if you've sent pens to Bert for repair/restoration, or if he has a pen of yours for some other reason, be patient while he's a patient. K? And if you were planning on stopping by Pen Haven, please do so. Some Pen Haven regulars ... Normie, Cliff, Fraser, and Lilith will run the place while Bert's getting some R&R. Cheers! Bernadette

Excellent comments from everyone. I would have assumed that a 51 could be made better today for cheaper but it sounds as if that might not be the case.

Re: dream pens -- an opposing view
      3/10/2002:  Richard
I hate to disagree with those who have expressed the opinion that a revival of the Parker "51" would be a dream pen, but I would go out of my way to avoid such a pen. The modern Duofold, while a successful and attractive pen, is not really a revival of the old Duofold. It is a modern pen from its iridium to its converter, and it doesn't really look like an old Duofold any more than the modern Volkswagen Bug looks like the classic old Beetle. The closest we are likely to see to a "revival" of the "51" would be a lesser-quality remake of the cartridge/converter "51" that was marketed to a dismal reception about 40 years ago. Parker/Waterman surely doesn't want to return to the "bad old days" of the complicated and expensive Vacumatic filler, or probably even to the hand-assembly days of the aerometric filler, when it can simply purchase a premanufactured converter to stick in the box. And I doubt even more whether the company wants to invest in recreating the precision tooling that went into the manufacture of the collector, when it can produce or purchase a much less critical feed for a pen that already sells well at a hefty price. The "51" went on sale in 1941 for $12.50. In today's dollars, that's $150.68 (according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Minnesota). Would $150.00 cover a really honest "51" today? Not on your life; I'd bet more on the order of $450.00, or probably $1000.00 for a limited edition. Why would anyone in his or her right mind throw that kind of money at a modern imitation when the real thing is widely available, with myriad cap styles and finishes, for much less? I certainly wouldn't.

Pens in the Pocket
      3/10/2002:  Bill R.
Stylophiles is looking for a few good writers.... Well, actually, we've got the Pens in the Pocket column, and we'd like to get the experiences of some of you folks! The length has to be just 750-1000 words or so, and we'll take care of the photos. The subject? Well, the pens in YOUR pocket. Just tell us all about whatever pens it might be that you are actually using on a daily basis. Sort of like the "what are you using" threads, but slightly more detail. To make it interesting, we've decided to put everyone whose entry is run as a column into a drawing for $75 worth of nib work by John Mottishaw. This is a great chance to have a broken nib fixed, or a good nib made great through a custom re-tipping or grinding. Since Dean doesn't count, it's a one in eleven chance to win! Entries may be submitted to: stylophile@earthlink.com Bill R.

Dream Pens You'd Like to See Manufactured
      3/10/2002:  Dean Tweeddale
I agree 100% a remanufactured Parker 51 oversize pen would defiantly be a hit. This pen is obviously one of the most collected and used of the vintage pens and is still today one of the most reliable writers in all pendom. Parker could bring it back as a new flagship pen, marketing first the $500-$1000 LE version, and then bringing out an open edition in the $300 list price range. I believe the pen would sell itself and Parkers problem would be keeping up with demand. Are they listening…? I wouldn’t count on it. But what about all the other custom pen-makers out there? Howard, Chris, Grayson, David, Brad, and you others, are you listening, we’ve seen you can produce and there are plenty of 51 parts on the market, just ask Roger. I’ll get in line for several oversized 51’s, anybody else? Actually at the LA show I think it was Ernesto (sorry if I am wrong about this) that had a scaled drawing he had made of an oversize 51. It was very interesting and proved that it would work. My opinion is that the first to execute an oversized 51 properly will have a steady income for quite some time. Dean

Dream Pens You'd Like to See Manufactured
      3/10/2002:  Hank
A remake of the Parker '51 (I'd like to see it a little larger) would be a huge success. Parker/Waterman has stubbornly refused to remake the pen as they did the Duofold. They have been asked numerous times over the years. Of course, if they did make it, it would cost about ten thousand dollars!

Atlanta Show Update
      3/9/2002:  Maryann at PenstopOnline

The Atlanta Pen Show officially opened to the public this morning and it was a great opening. By mid-morning the room was full and there was a buzz everywhere. People seemed to be very excited about the show and well prepared with lists of things they were looking for.

We had the pleasure of meeting a good number of our southeast customers and it is always a pleasure to put the name with a face. Tomorrow is expected to bring out more folks to the show and we are looking forward to it. There were door prizes all day and the winners were really pleased with their new pens. The owner of Ancora, Giovanni Santini was present and is a pleasure to speak with. Ancora has introduced some new and exciting pens and they will be available for sale shortly. Visit our website at www.penstoponline.com for updates in our Ancora section.

Anyone within driving distance to the Holiday Inn Select on Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Atlanta, Ga. should head on over tomorrow and enjoy a day at the show.

I will post more tomorrow.

Parker "51" Empire Help Needed
      3/9/2002:  Don Lavin
Here is a test for my pen friends in cyberland. Anyone who has seen a Parker "51" with the commonly referred to "Empire" cap in 14kt gold, knows how gorgeous the pen looks. Recently I was asked to provide an ad or catalog reference for this pen and to my shock not only did I not have any ads or catalog references other than in repair manuals with replacement parts listed, but my dear friend and major Parker collector Dan Zazove could not find anything either in his extensive collection of paper material. We were blown away. By the way, the material we did uncover from Parker referred to the replacement caps as "Heirloom" caps in 14kt with pictures showing more than one "Heirloom" design including the famous "Empire" or "Icicle" pattern. Does anyone out there have a Parker ad or catalog page reference to this pen? Please let me know. And thanks.

Great shopping experience
      3/9/2002:  Jeff Paul
Just a quick note to the rest of us pen lovers out there. I just paid my first visit to the Paradise Pen Company since they changed names last year. I HAD A GREAT VISIT with the store manager (Houston Galleria). She mentioned they will be expanding their limited selection this year, and their in-store selection (non-limited) was really good. Glad I stopped by.

Ballpoint refills
      3/9/2002:  Raymond Wong
I have the same feeling about ballpoint refills as Ray McKenzie. I don't understand why an expensive ballpoint does not write as well as the cheap BIC or papermates. My worst experience is with MontBlanc. And these are expensive ballpoints. I am anxiously waiting to try the new Parker gel refills to see if they are any better.

FS: Mint Parker 21 set + others

First email gets it. Thanks. Still have more Ashford Visconti FPs for $65 each and some vintage Parker 45s left, too! at my website: www.pointythings.com

Special Edition Metal BIC Ballpoint
      3/7/2002:  Jim
I remember some years ago reading about a special edition version of the BIC Crystal (Orange in Europe) ballpoint pen. It was identical to the regular cheap plastic ones, except that it was constructed in metal with a chrome finish. Does anyone know of such a pen? Or even if someone has an example for sale? Thanks in advance, Jim

ballpoint refills
      3/7/2002:  Ray McKenzie
I have been disappointed several times after buying a nice ballpoint pen refill( eg Waterman and Lamy ). Both were black and neither wrote nearly as well ( smooth, solid, bold lines) as Papermate refills I have used in cheaper pens. Among the nicer ballpoints Cross and Shaefer were slightly behind the Papermate , followed by Parker , Waterman and Lamy in that order. Is this consistent with anyone else's experience or have I just gotten some bad (or old) refills? It is a shame for a nice pen not to perform as well as a disposable Bic or Papermate.

Sheaffer Skyboy logo
      3/6/2002:  Mary
Hi, this is my second attempt to find out if anyone knows of a source for a copy of the logo that was on top of the box for Sheaffer's Skyboy pen, released in the 1940,s (I think). I have a Skyboy fountain pen and pencil set in Carmine and the box they came in. There is an indentation in the top of the box that had a wing shaped logo in it. The logo is missing. I have restored the pen and pencil, and would like to restore the box as well. Any copies or other information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Mary

Chicago Pen Show Update
      3/5/2002:  Donald Lavin
We are once again pleased to announce that the Chicago Pen Show will be honored to have The Parker Pen Company and the Waterman Pen Company as the major sponsors of this year’s show. As of this date they are planning on bringing an exhibit of current production pieces and prototypes of the new limited edition Accession pens to be introduced and we welcome their strong support. Parker Pen also plans on passing out free samples of their popular gel ink refills. We are also pleased to announce that we will have some honored guests at this year’s show, who have not attended in the past. I have been advised by the Sailor Corporation of America that not only will it be attending our show but that they will be accompanied by its nib master, Mr. Nagahara. You can expect to see a sensational array of their fine pens. Also accompanying Sailor is a group of Japanese pen collectors which marks a first for our show. In addition, Geoffrey S. Parker, the great grandson of the founder of the Parker Pen Co. George S. Parker, has agreed to attend the show and graciously to set up an exhibit of some personal Parker family archive materials for display. Geoffrey is quite a pen fancier and the Chicago Pen Show proved too tempting to miss. When not running around the tables looking for pens, he will be happy to greet any visitors at his table to chat and discuss some of his favorite topics, Parker pens and Parker vintage aircraft. I intend to keep posting updates on a regular basis because the show is so exciting and there is so much to report. Stay tuned for auction news, sponsor news, special events planned and updates on hotel space, tables, exhibitors etc. Don

Rotring 600 Fountain Pen
      3/5/2002:  Larry L. Land
Hello All: Has anyone here had problems with ink flow in the Rotring 600 fountain pen? I purchased a Levenger co-branded Rotring 600 with a medium nib, and I found the ink flow to be poor. I returned the pen to Levenger, and they replaced it with a new one. The new one wrote in the same manner. I returned the pen to the Parker/Rotring service center, and they exchanged the nib with a broad nib. After filling the pen, it writes wonderfully. After half of a page, though, the ink flow is only about 1/2 of the freshly inked amount. In addition, the ink stops flowing if five or ten seconds pass between uses. I have to make several strokes on a scratch piece of paper to get the pan writing again. Is there anyway to adjust the ink flow? I have already soaked the nib in warm water. Thanks, Larry

March Stylophiles, and other ramblings.
      3/5/2002:  Dean Tweeddale
  Hi fellow Penlovers,
I just wanted to let everyone know that I’m still alive and kicking. Thank you everyone, for all the emails that poured in last month when I (or my body I should say) decided visit the hospitals ER three times within 7 days for three separate things. Wasn’t a fun week nor was the week following but things are somewhat back together now. I will be going in for gall bladder surgery sometime in the next week or so and hope after that everything will get back to normal. Thank you for all the patience and understanding on the updates to the site as some of them have come a bit late. We have coded and uploaded the March issue of Stylophiles and it is another winner. Bill has done another great job in assembling all of the material, photos, etc. into another great issue. I’ll let you discover everything covered in this issue for yourself (Just click on Stylophiles over there on the left). We have much more planned to give to you including some more great pen collections in our “Pen Collections Gallery”, many pen reviews upcoming in Stylophiles, plus some surprises. We’ll of course keep you posted as it all happens. Dean Tweeddale

Melbourne Pen Show
      3/3/2002:  Rick Preston
Just received report from Australia about the Melbourne Pen Show. Sounds like everyone had a great time & there were plenty of bargains to be had. The most amazing thing I heard was that a lot of Aussies don't use rubber pensacs for repairing their old lever-fill pens, they use ...wait for it... a member of the glo-worm family. Oddly these little critters can be squeezed right outta their skins like a ripe banana, leaving behind a skin which retains its elastic properties due to a high density of oils which don't intefere with ink when they are used as sacs. The other amazing thing about these worms is they come in all different sizes and the guys who sell them charge about 10cents apiece making them a real alternative to the rubber sac. Can't wait to go there myself next

seeking Carene (logos on pens?)
      3/2/2002:  Dov
Is a fancy high end pen with a company logo worth less than un-logoed model. I have seen Pelikan 800's like this and once bought a vintage 400 pen+pencil set. I bought to write and this serves the purpose admirably. But what about resale value, if ever the need arises. Recently I have been checking out Waterman Carenes. They go anything from $60-120. Mostly in between. Last night I bid $50 (went for $56) on a nice looking Waterman Carene mib made for for top Enron officials and their high rolling guests. Part of the empire that was Enron. The final price was quite a bit under the regular enbay results for this pen. That's why I thought a logo decreases the selling price. Is this assumption correct? BTW if anyone on the list is thinking of parting with their Carene in good condition, I am interested. Dov who wants to buy himself something small for his upcoming 5

Hello all! I'm running a 30% off sale on the Hero '900' series through the end-of-day on Sunday, the 3rd. These pens are a bit unique for Hero -- and Asian pens in general -- in that the nibs are medium points, as opposed the usual fine or x-fine. The March Special does *not* apply to these sale pens. The series comprises the Palladium & Gold, 22k Gold, Celluloid, and the Flower FP & BP set (only one left in stock as I write this). Please take a look an read a bit more about them here: http://www.hisnibs.com/'900'_series.htm Well, I'm starting to get back letters with seals from customers now , as they play with their new glue guns, and here's what the they're using: http://www.hisnibs.com/sealing_wax.htm If there's enough interest, I'll probably be adding mini glue guns and sticks in the coming weeks. When ordering from the regular selection of pens, don't forget to take advantage of the March Special: http://www.hisnibs.com/specials.htm Thanks for looking! Re: 21repair???
      3/2/2002:
This appears to be a post by Da Frank Dubiel the author of Da Book, which tells most all about pen repairs. Anyone want to bet on that?? Either way what he says about the Parker 21 is right on. But don’t send the 21 out for the $50 repair, instead buy 5 or 6 21’s and a copy of Da Book and go to it. You’ll not only learn something but you’ll have fun doing it.

Re: Incurable Collector segment on A&E
      3/2/2002:  Andreas Lambrou
Dear Colleagues, A few months ago we were contacted one evening by A&E saying the following morning they were shooting at the Santa Monica antique center, a new series called, 'The Incurable Collector'. And they asked if we could supply them with some vintage and modern pens. They also said that John Larroquette would be involved, and that he is a pen collector. One of his favorite pens was a Sheaffer Snorkel. John is known in the pen fraternity as there was an article about him in Pen World by Nancy. Mary and I put together about two dozen pens and the following morning we took them to the shooting location. All the crew and John were simply fantastic, they all loved the pens and it was obvious they put their heart into their work which included not only fountain pens but also other collectibles. Both Mary and I were impressed with the morning's shooting. The two pens in the program were a Sheaffer Snorkel (it reminded John of his own pen that he loved) the Platinum Oiran artist proof that Classic Pens created with Platinum, Japan. Apparently the allocated time did not allow for more exposure on fountain pens. While there may be a possibility for more exposure in the future, it appears that we could help as a group to advise A & E in a positive way, the importance of fountain pens and the following they have in the pen fraternity. Best regards, Andy Lambrou

21 repair?
      3/2/2002:
You can buy a complete and working 21 at a pen show for $5 to $10. A replacement nib would cost at least that and probably more. Cheaper to replace the pen. Or at least replace the screw in section with nib into your current barrel and cap. Finally if you insist on repair, still cheaper to get another 21 and swap out its nib for yours which isn't hard following Da Book. To have the nib professionally repaired would cost around $50.

Broken Nib - Worth repairing?
      3/2/2002:  Pete
Recently I broke the nib on my Parker 21 fountain pen. It's one with a blue barrel, a satin steel cap and a bladder compressing clip inside the barrel. To be honest I've never been a fountain pen collector. Actually, my father gave that pen to me when I was young. But it's by no means an display-only heirloom. (which most people I know tend associate fountain pens with). In fact, I used the Parker on a regular basis, and loved the way it wrote. The oval point had been broken cleanly off one side of the nib, so the entire nib needs replacement. Do you think it's going to be economical for me to have the pen repaired, considering the likely cost of the repair and the actual value of the pen? (which, from what I gathered, wasn't exactly a top-of-the-line model!) I know of no local pen-repair shops, which means I'll probably have to send the pen off overseas. Can you recommend any particular outfits? Alternatively, would it be more attractive costwise for me to procure a nib and install it myself? I've long pursued the hobby of precision metalworking and modelling. Also I've fixed some pretty delicate mechanisms. So, ss long as I have accurate information regarding the pen's dissambly, I believe I am up to the job. However, I'd like to know where to procure the nib. Thanks in advance for your advice

College pens
      3/1/2002:  gary
Let me suggest some vintage pens: Parker 45. Go to Karl Barndt's site listed below. 45's are bullet proof, come in lots of variations and will clip on your tee shirt collar. Go up market a little and get a steel capped 51. Bullet proof, get and forget it. The Safari listed is great: for an extra $10 from Rotring customer service you can order and experiment with an italic nib. Go high tech and get the shiny Al star Safari. Try scaupaug@aol.com for the Snorkel: amaze your friends as the tube descends into the ink and sucks up a snootful. You have a ton of choices. If you have to fill out multi-part forms you may want a roller ball, but I'll leave that recommendation (or for a gel fill) to the experts. Good luck on college. Gary

A Gaggle of Vacs repaired by Richard Binder
      3/1/2002:  Len Provisor
I know, a gaggle are turkeys and Richard just returned five Vacumatics that were turkeys that are now so minty and transparent I can see through them all the way to Sunday!! A few weeks ago I found some Vacs at a flea market, including a 1936 Golden Web. I sent them all off to Richard, including another I had that he converted to a super cursive italic. Italics are not known for speedy writing, but once "Binderized" they are just as speedy as David Mason's steel nibbed Sheaffer italic stubs. Out with the better stationery and the Snailee list for long overdue notes and letters. Visit Richard's website at www.virtualcrate.com/pens Thank you Richard Binder.
