Sheaffer Legacy Smooth Finish
      3/31/2001:  Maryann Zucker

The Sheaffer Legacy with a smooth finish was not sold in stores. Those are the original models made by Sheaffer who then custom designed them with a barley finish and in the case of Classic Pens, were subsequently made into the CP-4 series, the Washington and the Richmond. You will not find these pens being offered in the smooth finish at regular retailers, other than PenstopOnline and a few other dealers who were able to purchase them prior to their being customized.

Endura Nozac Symetrik
      3/31/2001:  Dave Glass
Ron: Conklin initially used the Symetrik term -essentially as an adjective - to refer to their rounded streamline pens in both lever filler (Endura) and piston filler (Nozac) versions. You can find all permutations of three terms among pens produced in 1931-1932. Conklin shortly settled on using just the Nozac name for the piston filler and Endura Symetrik (later just Symetrik) for the lever filler. All Nozacs are relatively scarce compared to Vacumatics or Balances, but none of the early round versions qualify as rare, IMO, on the basis of how they are marked. Repair procedures for all Conklin piston fillers are generally the same (although early Pat Pending models don't have readily removable twist knobs).

Pelikan M800 Nib - Trade M for F
      3/31/2001:  Bob Sachs
I have a super smooth, old style MEDIUM 18c nib on my Pelikan M800. It lays down a line that is somewhat too wet for my left handed writing and I am looking for some who has an old style, super smooth FINE or EF 18c nib for a Pelikan M800 who would be interested in trading. The M800 was one of the first pens I purchased a few years ago. It still sets the standard for smoothness, but I find that I use it for solely for signatures because of the wetness/left handedness issue. I'd like the narrower nib so I will end up using the pen more. I'm not really interested in the new style nib. Let me know back channel if there is any interest. Thanks. Bob Sachs

Conklin Endura Symetrik
      3/31/2001:  Ron
Bought a Conklin a couple weeks ago that I've never run across before. It's marked "Conklin Endura Symetrik." The nib is a large nib, also marked "Endura". Crscent above the clip, two cap bands, and the clip is the classic Conklin clip. But the filling system is like that found on a Nozac. I have several questions: 1] Is this a transition type of pen (i.e. they had the idea, but the Nozac name hadn't been introduced) 2] Rare, moderately rare, or what? I can't find it in any of my books. 3] Is the repair the same as a Nozac? Any tips? I've looked in "DA BOOK" - but want to be careful before I jump into this one, even though I've done a lot of repairs. The problem is that the piston is frozen into the barrel. I've run it through an ultrasonic cleaner, but it's still stuck. I don't want to crack the barrel, because the pen is in (otherwise) decent condition! Thanks folks!

Pelikan LE's For Sale
      3/31/2001:  Fritz Kopeinig
The following Pelikan Special Edition pens are available for sale: "Humankind" and "Wall Street." Both are MIB with all associated paperwork. Both have Medium nibs.

Sheaffer Legacy Sterling Silver
      3/31/2001:  Raza Zaidi
In 1997 I bought a Sheaffer Legacy Sterling Silver. This had a barley design sterling silver cap and barrel. I have recently purchased another of the Sheaffer Legacy in sterling silver from one of the on-line stores. But this time the pen I received had a plain cap and barrel. Can anyone tell me when this change took place, i.e. since when Sheaffer has changed the design of its sterling silver legacy from barley to plain.

Refilling cartridges
      3/31/2001:  Rod
Bill, I use a syringe that I got from a diabetic friend. But, what is the point? The advantage of cartridges is that they are convenient, because they are SEALED. Refilling a previously used cartridge from a bottle with a syringe is no different from refilling a converter - actually, the converter might be more convenient, since you do not also need the syringe. Sometimes I think that an old eye-dropper filled pen might be better, since you will fill it less often - most piston mechanisms consume about half (and often more) of the inside volume of a pen barrel. Then again, if this stuff was easy, then someone would have already designed and built the pen equivalent of a "better mousetrap."

Brown Ink
      3/31/2001:  Bill Stevens
I noticed at InkPalette.com that they sell a syringe that they say works well for refilling ink cartridges. This might be an answer to your brown ink dilemma. Go to InkPalette and then to "Related Items" at the end of the link list.

Waterman not Sheaffer
      3/31/2001:  Rod
Mike, thank you for the information, but Waterman and Sheaffer cartridges are shaped differently, neither cartridge conforms to the "international standard" and neither will fit in a pen of the opposite brand.

Brown Ink Cartridges
      3/31/2001:  Mike
Fahrney's catalog 1-800-624-PENS indicates that Sheaffer cartridges #96300 at 5 for $1.95 come in the brown color.I don't know if the color is exactly the Havana brown color but maybe it is. Maybe they will fit your pen as well. Good luck!!

Need some help please
      3/30/2001:  Allan
I stumbled across your link and hope someone can point me in the proper direction. Over the past 12 years a business associate from England has visited, one each occasion he has brought me gifts. I have the following in my possession and would like to determine their value and the best way to sell them. Each pen was purchased from Harrods and have the proper certificates, the Cartier pens have the Cartier certificates. The pens have never been used and are in the original setup boxes: Silver Alfred Dunhill Rollerball #EW3164 Cartier Diablo rollerball #ST180016 Cartier Diablo ballpoint # ST180010 Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks, Al

Havana Brown Cartridges
      3/30/2001:  Billy Bob
You're telling me pardner. I think I bought the last pack in the good ol U.S.A. Everybody write Waterman and grouse. However, ol Billy Bob here gets to ride on a big bird once in a while to strange and foreign places such as London. Guess what, they still sell the cartridges in Europa and they are fairly popular and expensive! However those old internationalcartridges in washable blue cost about $1.55 for a bag of 50 at Heathrow airport. Now if i could just get that Havana Brown out of my Levi's I'd be sitting tall n the saddle again.

Flea Market Find and Fried Pickles.
      3/29/2001:  Will Thorpe
Well, this morning, we just finished feeding 15 horses, 11 llamas, 2 alpacas, 1 guanaco, three dogs, one barn cat when I decided I'd had enough of this farmology. "Boys and girls it's the 30th, it's payday and we're a goin to town! Get on your smiley pocket shirts, starched blue jeans and load up your traveling pen, we're heading out." Mass scurry and we all line up to load into Moby Dick. Now Moby Dick is the big white ranch pickemuptruck. Four doors, smelly diesel engine, genuine after market dual air horns, CB antenna, FM antenna, TV antenna, cell phone antenna, big black cattle guard on the front, rear fenders that look like bathtubs, mud flaps the size of throw rugs, vertical exhausts that go SSSssshhhh when you let off the gas, two trailer hitches and a bumper sticker that says protected by Smith and Wesson. Your normal Texas Cadillac. I, Willie Boy, check everybody out as we load to make sure they are well equipped. Tina Belle has her Omas, Earl has his Parker Duofold, Gonzolo has his 1932 Sheaffer B&P with Mottishaw nib, I have my Univer, Bubba has his Esterbrook, and Billy Bob has his red marbled Waterman Phileas (which he refers to as Strawberry Roan since he's a bronc busting man). I say "Billy Bob that's a cartridge pen." He says he likes it for travel and always carries a spare pack of cartridges in his back pocket. Somewhere in the back of my mind I hear the Soggy Bottom Boys singing "Don't take your pens to town son, leave your pens at home Bill, don't take your pens to town" but I pay it no more heed than a passing roadrunner. We have a rip roaring good time in town. New shirts with black pearl snaps for all and I got new chaps, leather, batwings, mustard yellow in color (I prefer to think of them as Parker Mandarin). Gonzolo found a green pastel Esterbrook at the segunda (second hand store) for $5.00. A good day. We stop in the White Elephant saloon to wash down the trail dust, Corona's for all. I sign the check with my Univer. The waitress says she's never seen a pen like mine before. I tell her it's a fountain pen, the latest thing, environmentally friendly, ergonomically designed and that everybody who's anybody has one. Just like quick draw McGraw the whole crew whips out their traveling pens and begins to draw on napkins, autograph the menu and just generally show off. I can tell the barkeep girl is impressed and will no doubt be first in line when the local office supply store opens in the morning. We break out into a chorus of "I Saw the Light, I Saw the Light", for we know we have made another convert. However out of the corner of my squinty trail wise eye I notice that Billy Bob didn't unholster that strawberry roan Waterman Phileas cartridge pen (I hear a tune that sounds like "Don't take your pens to town Bill, leave your pens at home son"). Now I can usually smell a storm approaching but the sawdust on the floor must have dulled my senses cause I made no inquiries of the bronc busting Billy Bob. As the fading sun turned to a dusty red over Abilene we mounted up and rode for home. Feeling a need for grub we stopped at Catfish O'Harlies and proceeded to stuff ourselves on catfish, fried shrimp and hush puppies. The waitress mentioned dessert but we all declined as we're already putting too much weight in the stirrup as is. All except Bubba that is. He gleefully pointed at this little standup dessert menu on the table and announced "I'll have that!" However the waitress thought he was pointing at the appetizer menu which said "Fried Pickles." So Fried Pickles he got. They looked like chopped up pieces of roasted cactus floating in transmission fluid. Though Bubba had an odd look in his eye he hails from a place where men don't complain, cry or cook so he stuffed his mouth with Fried Pickles, dill pickles, salted, and spicy. Suddenly his expression gave a whole new meaning to bitter beer face. His cheeks sucked in and wrapped around his tonsils, his mouth puckered up like a newborn calf trying to nurse, tears ran down his cheeks like falling rain, his eyes bulged out like the headlights on a 1956 Buick. We got to laughing so hard Billy Bob fell off his chair and landed on his backside. We leaned over to inspect the damage and that's when we saw it. The huge stain slowly spreading across Billy Bob's faded but well starched Levi's. Then the aroma hit us like a runaway bull! The waitress froze, patrons quit chewing, the fans quit turning, the lights grew dim. We were embarrassed, we were humiliated, we shrunk back in fright, guttural screams of terror emitted from our paralyzed throats. Billy Bob had landed squarely on his rump and squashed that spare pack of Waterman's cartridges he carry's for that Strawberry Roan Phileas. And there it was for all the world to see, especially the hands over on the Matagoro, this unslightly smelly liquid pool, spreading across Billy Bobs jeans, Waterman Havana BROWN! AAAAAaaaaaagggghhh! Keep your cinch tight and don't squat on your spurs Buckaroos and Buckarettes.

Re: Shaeffer yellow dot (Mel)
      3/29/2001:  Richard
It means that the pen's White Dot is discolored, or possibly just dirty. Now then, what a White Dot means depends on when the pen was made. It originally meant that the entire pen was guaranteed free of defects in materials or workmanship for the life of the original owner. The scope of the guarantee has changed from time to time since the 1930s, and there was a period in the '40s and '50s when it was discontinued altogether.

Rare Vac
      3/28/2001:  Ron Ricketts
Finding a 1940's parker duofold in a antique shop was not a big deal. A green striped one at that. At home I discovered it had a Vacumatic gold clip and was inscribed by parker as a Parker Vacumatic 42. This is a rare find. Has anyone ever seen or heard of this pen. It is vac fill and a little shorter than the standard dufold. The clip is a demi size and the fill also a demi. It has the jewerers band with inital area(blank). Vac nib in fine. single jewel on tob in black. Normal dufold blind cap no jewel...Whats it worth?...Let me know back channel with any info...Member PCA...Thanks Ron

I was wondering what kind of engineering process is used to make such tubing as that of 'papermate' pens. I can't seem to distinguish if its some kind of injection molding because with the changing diameter sizes I can't see it being made through an extrusion process. Please email with comments(jrounsav@eden.rutgers.edu). thanks

Help in identifying Sheaffer set
      3/28/2001:  solomon varma
Hello friends, need some info badly. I have just been offered a Silver Sheaffer fountain pen and rollerball set that I need help in identification and pricing. I don’t own a scanner so will provide as detailed a description as possible. The set is contained in a black textured 4”x6” cardboard box with Sheaffer printed on the lower right hand corner. Inside is a beige coloured flock insert with depressions for two sliver plated hinged cases. The larger case holds the two pens. The pens are similar (but shorter and slimmer) compared to my Grand Connoisseur, with an etched floral design. Both pen caps have a small black rectangular sticker with the words “Sheaffer 802 fine”). The rims of the caps have the words “ Sheaffer sterling sliver 925 USA”. The fountain pen has a two toned 18k gold nib (smaller than my tortoiseshell Connoisseur) and a plastic ink cartridge. The smaller hinged case has 4 plastic ink cartridges. There is also a small black square in the flock insert with the words “ Imperial Silver Sheaffer”. Overall the items have light scratches due, I think, to handling. I have not been able to find anything about these pens in pen books or on the net, but the 75th anniversary model in gold looks similar. The pens are plastic and silver, with no brass barrels or fittings whatsoever. Please help as I rather like this set. Thank you. solomonvarma@hotmail.com

Sheaffer Snorkel-Statesman
      3/24/2001:  Mike
Greetings, sorry it has been a while since last I wrote! Question for the Sheaffer folks out there. I find a lot of Sheaffers, and today I found what I beleive to be a Statmensman snorkel. I have seen a lot of this type of Sheaffer in photos/ebay/internet, etc. I have never seen one of this color-beige. Is this rare? I know that an Esterbrook of the same era in this color is a rare one. I figured for $12 it was worth it! Also, how do I tell if it is an Admiral, Statesman, Crest, Sentinal, Saratoga? What I have derived is that Admiral is the one with has almost no capband and no dot, the Statesman has a white dot and wide gold band, the Crest is a bar filler with metal cap, the Sentinal has a 2-tone metal cap and white dot, and the Saratoga is like the Statesman but with a narrower band and nodot. It is aparently the same thing as a later version of the Admiral. Am I right? Why are there so darned many of these that are almost identical?!?

osmiroid cartridge pen
      3/24/2001:  einv
recently i won a 3 dollar cartridge pen with M nib and montblanc type cart inside. repeated flushings of the feed and nib did not make it free flowing, with skrip black in the cartridge. is there a special ink, say a drafting ink that one needs to use in these pens? the nib is semi hooded (like MBs nobelesse collection) and is marked soft medium. dipped in ink it writes very beautifully. i have seen many such cheapo osmi cart pens sold on ebay, i had in fact a choice of 3 bids.

PREEEETenTious!
      3/24/2001:  Will Thorpe
Well we're just sitting around the ranch house this morning, me, Bubba, Earl, Gonzolo and Tina Belle listening to the Soggy Bottom Boys sing Big Rock Candy Mountain. We're trying to dry out after feeding the livestock in another Texas monsoon and debating if we want to saddle up and ride fence or examine Earls new Duofold. When all of a sudden Billy Bob comes wheeling up in his 1959 Chevrolet dual exhaust straight stick Apache pickemuptruck (that's one word in Texas). He comes sauntering in, throws his genuine K-Mart $29.99 Stetson hat at the rack, and announces "Willie Boy, you know that brown bird ink (meaning Pelikan) you use is PREEEEEtentious." "It says so right thar on the bulletin board." Golly, we never knew Billy Bob could read! Gonzolo hollars Ay Carramba figuring we're about to fight. Earl says Billy Bob, this is Saturday and you know you can't use words like that in the ranch house, you got to wait till Monday when we're building some more of those NASA rockets. I immediately check the Funk & Wrangles for PREEEETentious figuring it has someting to do with stretching bob wire. Everybody else shoves the empty Pearl long necks out of the way and fires up the PC. Yep, there it is, for the whole world to see. Worse yet the hands over on the Matagoro will see this and I'll never hear the end of their coyote howls. Realizing the error of my ways I ain't going to dip snuff or brown ink anymore. I'm going to cigars and Bexley Lapis Blue ink so I can sit tall in the saddle again and hold my head high. I have to say there was a lot of disagreement over those lapis vs purple. One thing we do agree on is that if you want a nib like you want then you need to contact John Mottishaw. Wonder if ol John ever thought about that parrot sitting on his shoulder as PREEEETentious!? Keep your cinch tight and don't squat on your spurs Buckarooos and Buckarettes.

Osmiroid-like nib and pen
      3/24/2001:  R. Shroyer
An English friend introduced me to Osmiroid pens many years ago when we were students, and I have used Osmiroid pens equipped with medium italic oblique nibs since that time. Periodically, I've tried or been given "better" pens with similar nibs (Mont Blanc, Schaeffer, etc.), but however handsome and smooth-flowing, these pens have never had the sharp edge and exact angle of the Osmiroid. I suspect that the Osmiroid suits me because it is cheaply-made and therefore has little or no precious metal on the nib. Better pens are too "round" for my taste, probably because of the addition of precious metal. In any event, I can no longer find Osmiroid pens or the medium italic oblique nibs I favour, and need a substitute. Calligraphic pens without the "fountain" properties would, I suppose, have medium-italic oblique nibs, but I'm really after a better-quality pen with effective (non-leaking) storage mechanism. One last point I raise without quite knowing why. I use brown ink (pretentious, but somehow satisfying) and therefore do not want a cartridge pen. Your website is (good) news to me, though I'm always surprised to find that pen-lovers and pen-makers seem preoccupied with the appearance of pens rather than the variety of points and flow-mechanisms. I'd like more on the kinds of nibs, their technical and practical (touch-and-feel) characteristics, the availability of custom-made nibs, etc. Above all, I'd like someone who could make me an Osmiroid-like pen with a slightly more durable medium italic oblique nib and a reliable storage mechanism. Best wishes, Richard Shroyer

wahl to wahl
      3/23/2001:  Lynn Brant
Since I seldom see real Wahls that interest me anymore, I've turned attention to Wahl Oxfords. I have quite a few including some quite rare ones. I'm interested in corresponding with other Oxford collectors to get a picture of what the range of styles and colors in the line really was. If you have unusual Oxfords please drop me an email (if you're interested in selling that's ok too). I have some nice Wahl pens (not Oxfords), duplicates from my collection that I'm selling. These include some rare color Dorics. Email if there are Wahls you need to climb.

Wahl Silver RingTop

In the last post I forgot to mention the pen is about vintage 1920's

Wahl Silver RingTop
      3/23/2001:  RodC56
I am seeking a value for a pen I have been offered. It is a Wahl sterling silver overlay "ring top" with engraved vine pattern. The nib is in good condition - 14K Gold and marked "Signature". The pen is a lever filler about 3 5/8" long. The Body seems to have been been squashed a little - as though by a heavy weight but looks as if it could be repaired with care. The cap is in good condition. Any advice will be appreciated

Safety Pen
      3/23/2001:  Stephen Lam
Just following this line of discussion. Many "collectors" I believe collect pens as investments. There is nothing wrong with this approach. However, these people's choice will always be influenced by the "market". It is easier to sell a Watermans 100 yr pen or a Maxima Vacumatic, as most collectors know what they are. For an unknown brand, how do you persuade others of its worth, given that most people like to know the "market price" before buying anything, for fear of being ripped off. People who collect pens solely for the love of them (I don't believe I have met many in this category) will not care about the brand name or "market value". He/she will buy it just for its outlook, writing quality etc, provided it is affordable.

Chicago Pen Show Blues Night
      3/22/2001:  Len Provisor
It's official, Blues Night at the Chicago Pen Show is FRIDAY night. 6:30 sharp in the Hotel Lobby, we get Westin O'Hare shuttle buses to ferry us downtown to Buddy Guy's world-famous Legends Blues bar/restaurant. Bus fare is $20/person round-trip, 1/2 the cab rate, faster, safer and door-to-door, even if the return trip is (gasp) 3am.!! Pay the driver cash, he doesn't take pens. No reservations at Legends, so we have to be there by 7-7:30 to get tables, seating 115, but standing room for 300 plus. Grreat Chicago Soul Food and Blues, and Chicago micro-brewskis...I guarantee you you will never forget this Chicago Pen Show. How about anyone interested in attending e-mail me, just to give me an idea of number of bodies I should be counting for the return trip. No obligations at this time, just getting an idea. If you want an official Buddy Guy's Legends Bluesletter magazine, showing menu, performers and Blues History, e-mail me, I'l be happy to mail one to you. If you want a peek at their website, it's simply: buddyguys.com Check out the Chicago Pen Show website listed on this site, just click on Pen Shows on the Home Page.

safety pen
      3/22/2001:  einv
if you like it, then buy it. IMO, it is what really matters. why is it that a brand name pen can be as defective as we please gets immediate respect, while a no namer has to prove itself in order to be accepted? we pen lovers or collectors could do well to be a little more egaliterian towards anonyme pens, in fact any pen that takes our fancy and writes well.

Safety pen
      3/22/2001:  Bob S.
I recently came across a lever filler FP in a shop, had what appeared to be gold trim over a rubber or plastic body, and the word "Safety" on the lever, no other ID. The merchant did not know enough about the brand to price it, she had just acquired it. I know nothing about such a brand, could not find any info in reference works in my possession. Can any collectors out there enlighten me as to the brand, and price range? (I didn't get to look at it much, it does write nicely when dipped and appears to be able to take in ink when tested with water.) I keep thinking it might be a Waterman, but has no obvious insignia or ID. Perhaps the filigree was done after purchase and accidentally covered the ID? Or is it a nice no-name pen of the "Safety" type? Please help assembled stylophiles. Thanks.

swap
      3/21/2001:  Adrian Mirvish
I have a Montblanc No. 149 fountain pen with a wide, 18k nib that I'd be interested in swapping. S/n "KC107757" and "Germany" are etched on the top gold ring and "Meisterstuck No 149 Montblanc" on middle ring. The pen is in absolutely mint condition, and has only been used it once when the previous owner wrote his name. (No box or papers.) The pen is wonderfully balanced but it just does not fit my hand well; I'm an academic and make much use of use a pen as well as a computer! I'm fond of pens in silver so if you have such a used, silver item of equivalent quality - one that is however in really good shape - (Montegrappa, Caran d'Ache, etc.) I'd be interested in doing/negotiating a swap. MEXTERBROOKS
      3/20/2001:  Bruce Gebhardt
A year ago, I asked for information on mid-50s Esterbrook fountain pens made in Mexico. A number of people replied, and Dr. David Glassman really answered the question for my purposes. He provided material indicating that the company had already been acquired by a bigger one. It was my intention to provide a report. I'm about ready to send out Dr. Glassman's information together with material contributed by others. It occurred to me that after a whole year, others may have new information to contribute. In the spirit of collecting such further information, and as an excuse for further procrastination, it might be timely to ask once more if anyone has more information. Therefore, could Estie collectors survey their collections and report if any-especially SJ, J, and LJ pens, and the subsequent models called icicles or stripers-bear "Hecho in Mexico" impressions. Also, in particular reference to icicles, how many and what kinds do not. Provide information on the model if known, size, and color. I only recently learned that icicle pens came in the SJ length (4.75") as well as the LJ length (5.25"). Please include length info in reporting on icicles. Thanks.

Source for Diplomat pens?
      3/20/2001:  Eric Doore
Does anyone here have any information on contacting the company that makes Diplomat pens? In lieu of contacting them, does anyone have an address for a supplier of such pens? I had a Diplomat Spacetec AL-1 which I used at work. I have to write all day on uneven surfaces and it was very handy. Unfortunately, a customer apparently took a liking to its unusual styling and decided she had to take it when I wasn't paying attention. I wasn't able to regain my pen from the customer and I can't seem to find it anywhere locally. Anyone got any suggestions? I've looked at the Fisher space pens, but they're a little aesthetically unpleasing...

Duofold
      3/18/2001:  Andy Rothman
Ron -- sounds like you have a striped Parker Duofold from 1941, with a vacumatic filler. These are somewhat common pens and came in various colors and sizes. Some are vacumatic filled, like yours, and others came with button fillers. Some came with the Parker "victory" nib which has a "V" design. Some of the models came with Parker's blue diamond clip, signifying a lifetime guarantee to the original owner. Less common are the double-jewel models. If anyone is interested, I have a few of these pens for sale, including some sets and double jewel models. Contact me off-list if interested. Regards, Andy.

Brause Pen
      3/17/2001:  David
At a Garage Sale today I bought a Fountain Pen that I was told was made in Germany in the late 1940s. The name on the pen barrel is BRAUSE ISERLOHN and the name BRAUSE is also on the clip. I have never heard of this pen before. It has a pump filling mechanism very much like the Pelikan with a similar see through section that holds the ink. It is a very well made pen and I am curious to find out more about it. If any one out there can help, it would be appreciated. David

re: pilot double broad refill
      3/16/2001:  Waco Johnny D
Yup, and I agree with you. Nothing comes close except perhaps the Uniball Gel Impact, and even that loses its smoothness at severe angles, while the Pilot BP does not. I can't remember where I got my stash of refills -- either FPH or Inkpalette.

pilot double broad refill
      3/15/2001:  Andrew
has anyone used the pilot double broad ball pen refill? It seems that virtually no one knows about or has them. they fit the Impressions ball pens by Namiki. the refill is the smoothest I've ever used, including rollerballs and I think I have tried them all. Also, I keep hearing rumors that Namiki is not supporting the US. Comments?

osmiroid
      3/15/2001:  Joshua Sasmor
As for the person asking about osmiroid - the company was bought by Sanford UK, which discontinued the line in 1999. I have both a B4 nib and a B2 nib which are rather broad - are you looking to trade or replace?

Osmiroid pens/nibs
      3/15/2001:  Joshua Sasmor
Hey everyone - I have an old Osmiroid 65 lever-filling pen with a music-writing nib (size B4 - very broad). The nib is designed to screw in to the section and I am looking for any other nibs for this pen. I have tried to use Esterbrook nibs, but the section is too narrow for the body of the nib (below the threads). So if anyone fas any Osmiroid nibs or Osmiroid pens with threaded nibs that they are wiling to part with, drop me a line please! Thanks

Namiki or Pilot?
      3/13/2001:  leslie
Beginner's question here. I was recently given a mint Pilot fountain pen, maki-e lacquer cap and barrel, 14K M nib, with Pilot engraved on the nib and clip. It came in plain unfinished japanese wood presentation box with instruction sheet (mostly in japanese) and spare ink cartridge.(It currently features a push the lever, plunger-style converter.) It looks a dead ringer for the Namiki Tradition series maki-e "Flowers of the Plumtree," however, and is signed by the artist. Is the Namiki brand marketed as Pilot in Japan? Or is this just an older Pilot series fountain pen that was later updated as a Namiki (different nib and clip?) Also, should there be any appreciable difference in their performance and feel? Thanks for any information you can offer!

Chris Thompson's replicas
      3/13/2001:  Ken Smoot
Just got my second duofold replica from Chris. A Black flat top senior with a yellow swirl. They are GREAT. A bit of the old (nib, feed, section, clip, etc.) a bit of the new (in colors that weren't available in the "old days") IMHO, a practical, usable and fascinating blend of old and new. When you consider what prices they want for new quality pens, you can't beat the tried and true. Check him out. Regards.

A report I have just heard on the radio mentions the demise of the Aussie Dollar. At apparently its lowest ever level A$1.00 currently costs US$0.5048 (less than 51 cents). If you want to see what that buys in vintage pens, look at http://www.vintagepens.com.au

Caran D'Ache repairs
      3/12/2001:  Ron
I ended up rooting around and finding the answer to my own question this morning. Fahrney's has a contact number for Caran D'Ashe in the US of (212) 689-3590. Mailing address : Caran d'Ache, Repair Dept, 3852 43rd St, Long Island City, NY 11101. I was told that there would be no charge for the repair (I'm still waiting to see if this is indeed true) - I'll report back on what they did when I get the pen back. Ron

PCA Benefit Auction
      3/12/2001:  PCA
Greetings -

As many of you already know, the Pen Collectors of America has been trying to raise some much needed funds for camera and related equipment so we can proceed with the Web Museum Project - a place where one day you'll be able to view and identify vintage fountain pens.

Saul Kitchener, a director of the PCA, long time pen collector and former co-organizer of the SF Pen Show will be posting a number of pens donated to the PCA to be auctioned off to raise funds for the Web Museum. You can search for these pens on ebay under "pca" or Saul's ebay id "just4halibut" I've listed the ebay link and description of a beautiful Swan pen currently up for bids below.

And of course, pens and monetary contributions are always welcomed! Email Melissa Lowry for details - mylowry@ix.netcom.com

Thanks for reading and thanks for helping the Web Museum project become a reality!

SWAN #3260 SELF-FILLER,BROAD FLEX NIB pca
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1121644163

Offered for bids with no reserve is a black Swan #3260 self-filler fountain pen with a Broad flexible nib made in England. Pen has been used and there is plating wear on the lever(surprise, surprise)and the ball of the clip. 5" in length pen is otherwise in good condition with no cracks, bite marks or scratches and would be an excellent writer for someone with a penchant for a nib that not only lays down a variable line, but a lot of ink as well. This is another pen I am selling for the benefit of the Pen Collector's of America(PCA). The entire selling price will go to the PCA as I am donating all ebay fees. If you're not a member write me for a brochure. This is the only organization working for the pen collector. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!! Empower yourself by joining.

RE: Montblanc Nibs?
      3/10/2001:  Reuben
I don't know where you can get a finer nib without paying a pretty penny. However, you can log on to , the website of John Mottishaw. He grinds and adjusts nibs, as well as repairs damaged ones. I have a Parker Duofold Centennial there now, getting a stub grind. He is the recognized expert in the country and is totally honest. I think the charge will be a $15.00 pen handling charge plus $35.00 to grind the nib for a total of $50.00. That is what he is charging me to turn a standard fine into a stub.I don't think you eill do much better than this price for a new nib, and John's work is the best in the country. Good luck with it.

Beginner's Question
      3/10/2001:  nex
Hi everyone, I am in the market of buying a fountain pen - in hope that it would get me somewhere in taking up pen collection hobby. I am looking for a pen that writes smoothly and is relatively easy to maintain. I have come across the MONTEGRAPPA and found them to be ecstatically beautiful... Would I go very wrong with these models (Historia, Classica and Extra) as a starter? Also are they too heavy for extensive writing? Would appreciate your opinion and other suggestions as well.

Montblanc Nibs?

Does anyone have a a Montblanc ballpoint pen they want to sell?

Tamara, Ideal, Centaur
      3/10/2001:  Veerle
Hello, I bought 3 fountain pens on a flea market today. I think they are American in origin but I can't find information about them on the internet. I am hoping Bulletin Board readers can help. The first is a simple black pen with >>Tamara u.s.a.<< written on the barrel(spelled exactly like that) . The nib is 14ct gold and has a mark in the shape of a shining sun with rays only on the left side. The second pen is black and blue/green marbled and has CENTAUR written on the barrel. The last pen is striped red/black (a bit like some early pelicans for example a pelican 100) and has IDEAL written on the barrel. All bits of information about these pens are very wellcome. Best wishes from Belgium, Veerle

Can one recommend a non-skipping pen?
      3/10/2001:  Yevgeniy Makarov
Hello, I am not very experienced in fountain pens but the thing I value most is that a pen writes steadily on all (reasonable)types of paper, especially smooth ones. Can somebody recommend what I should pay attention to when choosing a pen (or some model, below $50) so that it always starts and does not skip? For example, I have a Parker Frontier with "Dimonite Z nib" and it seems to be too stiff. It slides too easily and I don't really feel the necessary friction. And indeed, it starts skipping after half and hour or so of writing. Thanks a lot, Yevgeniy

Caran D'Ache repair

I have a silver Ecridore ball point that I need to have repaired - I can't get the button off of the back to replace the refill. Any suggestions on how to do this without sending it back? An address for repair in the US maybe? How is their service department? (I hope it's not like MB!)

aluminum bean pen
      3/10/2001:  Sarah Dudley
Two years ago I bought a great aluminum pen in the shape of a bean pod and I can't find the refill cartridges anywhere. The company is called Copyrite and seems to be Swiss-based, but the pen was actually made in Italy. I have found nothing on the net either. Does anyone know where I can either get refills or how to contact this company or their distributor?

Sheaffer Legacy Sterling Silver
      3/10/2001:  Raza Zaidi
I know that Sheaffer have discontinued production of the Legacy Sterling Silver. However recently I was able to get one through the internet from penstoponline. I notice that the pen which was mint in the box has a plain barrel and cap. This is different from the one I bought 3 years back from Selfridges of England which has a engraved barley design cap and barrel (Sterling Silvber) Can anyone help in identifying when this change took place that sheaffer started manufacturing the legacy sterling silver in plain design barrel and cap instead of the engraved. Thank you very much for your help.

Chicago Pen Show at Westin O'Hare Hotel
      3/10/2001:  Len Provisor
Only seven and a half weeks to go. May 4-6 for the Grandaddy of 'em all. 200-some tables, new pens and tons of vintage make this a pen hunters paradise. Here is where I find the parts I need from all those flea market finds, vintage bargains and great deals on new pens from some of the biggest names in the pen business. Collectors and dealers have been starting to come in earlier every year, some arriving on Tues or Wed, for casual and informal get-togethors in the cushy nooks of the lobby and restaurants. Let me tell you, Chicago is a great show. The auction in particular is exceptional, having many ultra-rare items, yet also many easily affordable pens and ephemera. If you are anywhere in the neigborhood that week, be sure to stop by. If you plan to fly in, call immediately for reservations because only a certain number of rooms are reserved at reduced rates. Various sponsors of the show have plenty of FREE giveaways on Sunday, and many donated prize drawings of great fountain pens and other gifts...like FREE ink blotters, of course :) Click on Pen Shows on this Home Page for more details. Now...for the Blues and Jazz inclined, an impromtu get-togethor is being arranged for a Chicago Jam Session. Not an official function of the show, but contact me if you play anything smaller than a church organ that you can bring with, like harmonica, guitars will be passed around, so practise if you have a tune you want to yodel or croon. More details later, but we plan one nite to visit Buddy Guy's famous Legends. Take a peek at www.buddyguys.com I guarantee you that your visit to the Chicago Pen Show will be the most memorable pen event of the year.

      3/9/2001:  Richard
For O-rings, try Father Terry Koch, P.O. Box 128, Los Gatos, CA 95031-0128. To receive his catalog of tools and parts, send him a large envelope with two stamps on it. Be sure, if you ask just for O-rings, to tell him it's a Snorkel.

O rings

I just bought a Sheaffer Sentinel Snorkel. It won't take ink. I think the problem is the O ring. Can someone tell me where to get O rings. I found a place in the UK but getting them to Philadelphia would cost more than the pen. Thanks

RE: Bad Luck w/ eBay
      3/8/2001:  Cliff
eBay cannot protect a buyer. It does not claim to protect a buyer. It will, however, if you sign up for that Billpoint thing, but that's only when using that service. They can't verify everyone on their site. That's just unreasonable. I am sorry you got burned, but it is pretty rare. eBay is always a risk! A risk I've taken dozens of times and have sent thousands of dollars to unknown sellers. It is pretty damn safe as far as I'm concerned. At least as safe as it could be considering all the factors...

Ohio Pen Show
      3/8/2001:  Len Provisor
Yup, soon as spring starts poking it's nose around, and we still have some time, I starting thinking of one of my favorite pen shows. Terry and Sonya Mawhorter throw a fantastic show, now one of the largest in the U.S., and it's because they pay attention to every detail, and spend serious money on advertising to get the crowd in on Sunday. Real good mix of vintage and new pens, and best of all...this is Conklin country. Lots of Conklins at this show. Lots of free ink blotters, too :). Great pizza party also, collectors scarfed down 40-some in about 65 minutes. Dessert party the next night..."Forget about it!!" Which means "incredible". Just watch grown men and ladies scramble for those sweets. The pizza delivery man was "attacked" when he came in the door. Plan your calender, make Ohio a must on your show schedule. You will not be disappointed, especially when you see the incredible new Conklin pens from Rob Rosenberg.

Capella pens
      3/8/2001:  Greg
I have a 1992 catalog from the Pen and the Sword ltd., which illustrates several pages of Capella pens. Recently I have become interested in collecting ballpoint pens and while searching the internet, including several pen sellers, I could not find any reference to this pen brand, other than several pens for sale on ebay. Is Capella still in business? If so, are their pens available in the US? If still manufactured, but not available in the US, are they available in Europe? Where are/were they manufactured? I am going to Italy next month (Rome, Florence and Milan). Are there sources in these cities I should check out? I particularly liked the Firenza Series ballpoint pens.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my inquiry about the Edson. I ordered one from Fahrney's today with a medium nib so I am excited about that and will tell you all how it is since you were so thoughtful with your advice. Thanks again!!

thanks, kevin for the edson info.
      3/8/2001:  einv
appreciate your candor in reporting your views on the edson. i had long been considering it as a must own pen, based on the oh wow reports from all owners. i guess it takes real guts to admit that one's big investment was not perfect... i have had a chance to do that in the past, and while the admission was painful, i felt a lot better about it later. even like that "blunder" now. hope you get to feel the same way. pen therapy for ya..

Edson
      3/8/2001:  Craig Nelson
I have five. At the under-$400 sale prices, they are the pen deal of the year. Rod and Kevin are right in that results vary; one of my nibs squeaks - but not in a way that bothers me; my MB LeGrand makes the ame whisper - while the others are silent. That said, of all the pens I own - Parker, Pelikan, Waterman, MB - the Edsons write the most consistently, and with the lightest touch.

Bad Story about Ebay

I paid for a Item in Ebay,Calligraphy set .The item was offered by an "Excelent" Seller from Canada,a lot of stars in his Ebay profile. After 18 emails the item have not arrived, the auction ended 3 months ago,He have not refund my money,in fact He will not Because I left a negative feedback in his profile and Ebay do not answer my complain,so Ebay do not protect Buyers.Unfortunately I am outside USA and I lost finally my money.Be careful with Ebay.Good Luck!

Waterman Edson
      3/7/2001:  Rod
Misty, I agree with Kevin that you may or may not get your money's worth. I have had a Green Edson Fine for nine months and not only is it beautiful and well made, but it is also a superb writer (but, as Kevin's experience shows: your mileage may vary). While mine writes very well, it also has what is referred to as a "singing nib" in that it squeaks as it moves across the paper. At first it was a little annoying, but after a while you do not notice it anymore - of course, the person sitting next to you in a class or a meeting might notice it though . Is it worth $795? Maybe not - I can think of numerous pens for which I would pay that amount, but not the Edson. Is it worth $399 to $500 (I paid FPH $475 for mine and mine is serial number 00262)? Maybe - mine is worth at least that much to me. My first 18 fountain pens were Watermans, since then I have tried four other brands and can tell you that there are a lot of wonderful pens available for $400 or less - some are better than others and some people like pens that other people do not (this is pretty subjective stuff). If you have a particular conumdrum, then please tell us explicitely why you are thinking of buying an Edson and we (the PenLovers readers) may be able to give you better information/advice.

Edson
      3/7/2001:  Kevin
I have had a Edson for about 5 months now and am not sure if I like it or not. I don't think there is a more beautiful pen made and the quality if good but I have a Parker Frontier ($30) that write better. Because the tip of the nib is a distance away from the feed, it tends to dry out when taking notes and I have spent a lot of time trying to get a nib that writes smoothly from the Waterman service center. Don't think that because of the high price you are getting a better writing pen, it does not seen to make any difference. If you like the looks go for it, if you are looking for an exceptional writing pen for the price you may get it you may not

Ebay Honesty
      3/7/2001:  Carlos
At this year's L.A. pen show I took some duplicate vintage pens and also all my Ebay mistake pens. I appreciate and recommend pen shows because they allow you to see an item before purchasing. You can consult with reputable collectors before purchasing. As for my full disclosure sales, I sold them for what I could get. I let the knowledgeable collectors tell me what they are worth to them. They are happy and I am happy. Did I pay for my mistakes? Heck Yes. There is definitelt a learning curve in pen collecting. This curve involves some missed opportunities, misrepresentation, and mostly education. In the end we become more knowledgeable collectors who enjoy the hobby more each year.

      3/6/2001:  david
interesting thread about ebay. Thoughts. 1) Ebay really is the greatest opportunity for daily easy pen hunting- if not quite the sorts of bargains found in the recently finished "golden age of pen hunting". 2) To me he word "may" is indicative of disingenous and gutless sellers. Yes, this word ("might" being the grammatically correct term) can be honest enough. But "May need repair, may have crack" invariably means "needs repair" or "is cracked". I hold much more respect for the seller who says "i have NO CLUE if this works so figure it doesn't. If it does, you can be happily surprised". I bid more on items sold by honest people, not sneaky people. "may"= sneaky, far as i'm concerned. Of course, maybe many people are suckered by it . Dishonesty would not persist if it didn't work, i suppose. (yes, now someone will point out where i once said "may"- yeep!) 3) Any buyer on ebay should ask key questions of sellers before bidding 4) Yes, ignorance can be used as a tool- as in a blurry picture and minimalist verbiage from an "amateur antiques shop " that turns out to be a front for well known pen collector. But that is the risk in any horse-trading arena. 5) Ebay has served to drop prices on new retail pens by opening a world market. Good? Bad? depends. 6) Ebay has expanded the market for nice vintage pens by introducing many people to the hobby who might otherwise be put off by the overall LACK of vintage pen dealers throughout the country and the relative dearth of pen shows. Think i'm wrong? Well, look in any urban yellow pages for "coin shops". Compare to listings for "old pen shops". Or consider that rare coin shows/auctions of some sort occur on weekly basis. Many people would not have found vintage pens if not for ebay. 7) clearly ebay is "buyer beware". But as noted by others, dealers with "no hassle " return policies offer good place to start. A plethora of good feedback helps a bit but realize feedback is mostly useless. Most people are afraid to give bad feedback. I can tell you that the few sources of garbage pens I've encountered on ebay have mostly good feedback. No guarantees. 8) most sellers will work with you if you find a real problem not listed in ad (like a cap crack). I've received fair partial refunds on several pens over the years. This is also a reason NEVER to bid from anyone who declines return privilege- even if pen sold "as is". I'd rather know what is ok or not with pen and have return option. You can email anyone who does not post either way about his return option. Use his answer to decide whether or not to bid. 9) realize you are always taking a chance bidding sight-unseen for items sold by amateurs, even from honest amateurs. 10) ebay provides the best chance in history for the little guy collector to have some chance at getting near-retail price for nice items. Lets us play much more in our hobby. 11) decide if you have the emotional stamina to accept losing items you wanted to win and winning items that turn out to be problems. Careful bidding on ebay is a remarkably fun and rewarding pastime, if one learns the ropes carefully. Ebay is a remarkable satisfactory place to sell items. Guess I like ebay. Fun tirade. thanks.

eBay
      3/6/2001:  Stephen Lam
The only people who have reasons to complain about eBay are perhaps those who have made bad deals via eBay, and pen sellers whose businesses have been adversely affected by people buying and selling via eBay. If you belong to the first group, my advice is that you should be careful when you buy or sell things over eBay. If you are an inexperienced pen collector. find out more about the item you want to bid on. Ask the seller questions until you are satisfied. If you don't have confidence to bid on eBay items, you should stay away from it. If you are a seller and afraid of selling pens below its usual market value, describe your item fully, providing clear pictures of your item. Market forces will ensure that your item will not be sold at as ridiculously low a price as the example given by Allan. If you are a pen dealer and complain because eBay is taking your business away, you should perhaps realise that eBay is popular because it gives buyers a new marketplace, with lots of varieties and choices, as well as the potential of buying something cheaper than from a dealer. As an occasional buyer/seller, whilst I realise I need to exercise caution when I deal via eBay, I appreciate the convenience and opportunities it offers me. I will continue to use it.

eBay Honesty
      3/5/2001:  Dean
I agree with what Jon and others have said. Check the return policy and if it is not stated within the auction, email and ask. Also check the feedback a dealer that is credible will have a great feedback track record. Keep in mind that it is possible to start a new identity at any time so a dealer with a bad rap can start over with a new identity. However a dealer or individual that has been around on eBay for a while will have a long string of positive feedback. Also you can tell how long the seller has been around because the feedback comments are dated. Plus you can feel out the seller by sending an email question and see what type of response you get. Not in all cases, but in most cases phrases like “ may need ……………..” you should translate into “will need …………”. I do feel that eBay and other auction sites are a good place to shop and add to your collection, with care though. That being said Pen Shows are great places to shop and add to your collection. Plus you get to meet face to face others like yourself. Dean

there was one lady who posted this incredible snap of a 51 with cap on and barrel unscrewed, saying: 'gee, is this supposed to be a pen or what? i don't see any nib, unscrewing it gave me what you see on the photo.' too good to believe? well, try this. i wrote her, saying that she should screw the barrel back on and PULL the cap off. she was awfully nice about this new piece of knowledge, but by then the auction was over.

Re: Hallmark Pen Refills

Lance, Hallmark no longer makes the refills. However, you are not out of luck. If you send an e-mail to "info@hallmark.com" they will send you an adapter that allows you to use Cross refills in the Hallmark wooden ballpoints. I just did this, and a nice lady named Jan e-mailed me today to tell me that my adapter is on the way. There is no charge.

Ebay and honesty
      3/5/2001:  Jon Rosenbaum
The easiest way to avoid disappointments is not to bid at all. However, that is not a practical solution, especially if you are addicted, as most of us are. However, practice "safe" pen collecting through this simple dictum: Always ask the seller what his return policy is. If it is "no questions asked" as mine is, you are probably going to have little or no trouble. Of course, nothing is risk free, but my rule is never to bid on anything I don't have advance permission to return.

Lambrou Rossi Collection
      3/5/2001:  Andreas Lambrou
Dear The March issue of Stylophiles carries a report on a new collection of pen designs, Paul Rossi and I have worked over the last year. These designs were hand crafted by Paul as sterling silver overlays on the Centennial Duofold. You can see the article and pens by clicking on the hyperlink below. Click here: Stylophiles_March 2001_LA Show http://www.PenLovers.net/stylophiles/1jan2001/mar_2001_cp_rossi.htm Only 10 pieces of each design are being produced, every one being a little different to the rest. It takes Paul about 90 hours to hand craft the overlay for one pen and these designs are produced exclusively for Classic Pens. We will be pleased to receive your inquiries and can furnish you details concerning availability and price. Demand for these very exclusive pens is high, we urge you to act now to avoid disappointment. Yours sincerely, Andreas Lambrou

I don't believe that anyone would say that all Ebayrs are dishonest. Some may even mean well. Just be sure of what you bet on. Bernie, stylophile

ebay
      3/5/2001:  Vicki
I am a sometime collector of fountain pens and also occasionally sell them on ebay. In defense of sellers, those of us who say "may need new bladder" etc. do so to let the buyer know that it may need a new bladder. There is no devious or dishonest agenda; quite the contrary: we want to describe as accurately as we can. As I am a seller with integrity but I am not a repairer of pens, I do not know what a pen may or may not need. It seems correct to state that in the description. I have also immediately refunded money to the buyer if he/she is disappointed for any reason. I realize that I cannot speak for all ebay sellers, but for those of us (and I am sure there are many) who truly do not know all about pens and who also are not "hiding behind" this lack of knowledge to hoodwink the buyers. There are, indeed, two sides here.

Re: Ignorance
      3/4/2001:  Richard
Feigned ignorance is, as you say, a very real phenomenon on eBay. I've discussed it with sellers who are quite open (back channel) about playing dumb. It draws bids from buyers who are themselves more-or-less ignorant but don't admit it even to themselves. These buyers think they're going to get a bargain because the seller doesn't know what he or she has. Well, sometimes you do get a bargain, but I'd say that the odds aren't in the buyer's favor. Cliff's solution, refusing to buy unless you know exactly what you're getting, isn't feasible; the only time you can KNOW exactly what you're getting is when you buy an item that is sold as NRFB, i.e., Never Removed From Box - and then, only if the box is still sealed with a provably priginal factory seal. (Yup, there are unethical folks out there who repackage used goods and apply their own "factory" shrink wrap.) The only entirely successful way to buy on eBay is to go into every deal with "Caveat Emptor" firmly uppermost in your mind. If you're prepared to get stung once in a while, you can come away with some pretty deals.

RE: Ignorance
      3/4/2001:  Cliff
One simple solution: If you don't know exactly what you are buying, don't bid....

Ignorance
      3/4/2001:  Bernie, stylophile
If you look at the pens-for-sale posts in Ebay, you will find how ignorant people are about fountain pens, or at least they pretend. This is obviously a ploy. One must be absolutely certain of what (s)he buys on Ebay. Dealing with all those "ignorant persons" one can get jipped pretty quick with no recourse. Such phrases as I don't know if it works, I haven't opened it, seems to be OK, can't move the pistion but should be OK, probably the sac needs to be replaced, nib is bent but probably can be straightened to write well, color is faded but I am sure that it can be fixed, thread is partially stripped but closes fine, one tiny crack in the barrel but it will not affect the way it writes and skips at times but I am sure that it needs a good cleaning, are all phrases that you read in Ebay. I bet that most of the time, the damage to these is irreversable and you have no recourse because you have been told about it under the disguise of "I don't know anything/much about fountain pens", often from antique dealers. Who are they trying to kid? Please be careful! Bernie, stylophile

Help - Correction
      3/4/2001:  Maggie
I messed up the spelling of my pen name. I put the wrong accent over the wrong letter. The correct spelling is "Modèle Recife déposé". It's exactly as I have it in quotes with the first two words capitalized and the last not. I also want to mention that it is either a roller ball or ball point pen.

Montblanc 12 repair
      3/3/2001:  Stephen Lam
For Bruce :The piston assembly of a Montblanc 12 can be wriggled out of the piston end. It takes a bit of practice and a lot of care. If the piston is leaking, you may need replacement parts. It appears you are not an experienced repairer. If this pen has high sentimental value, perhaps you should have it repaired by Montblanc or a professional repairer.

Montblanc 12 piston repair
      3/3/2001:  Bruce Robinson
A friend has entrusted me with her 1961 Mont Blanc Meisterstück No.12, a gift from her late father. The piston-filler is leaking, and a lot of ink comes out the blind-cap piston control. I would like to know how it may be disassembled for repair, please. I have unscrewed the section and shell off the top of the piston chamber, but I do not know how to get the blind-cap end apart. The Meisterstück 12 has a semi-hooded nib like the modern Generation model, and an unusual variable-width double-triangle cap-band. I have reread "Da Book", but my copy does not discuss modern pens or Mont Blancs. Any hints would be most welcome. Thanks,

Modern Duofold Nib Codes
      3/2/2001:  Simon C.
Modern Parker Duofold nib code 83 refers to a normal medium nib. It means the same for both Centennial and International size.

Sheaffer Legacy 2
      3/2/2001:  David R.
I noticed somebody was asking about the Legacy 2. I have one with the platinum with gold trim. It is about as smooth as you'll get in a nib. It has generous ink flow. It is, however, heavy and feels like a bullet in the hands. I'd say it's a good pen overall.

Sheaffer bldg: some corrections
      3/2/2001:  David Nishimura
Thanks for the info, Sam. In that I've been immersed in Sheaffer's early history lately, preparing a series of articles based upon the original Sheaffer patent litigation of c. 1914-16, may I offer the following comments? Sheaffer was registered as a company in January of 1913, the same month the move to the Hesse building took place. Sheaffer's first lever-filler patent was issued in 1908, but no pen production took place until 1912. I don't have all the notes in front of me at the moment, but it is clear that the official Sheaffer history is less than accurate in many respects. Keep an eye out for the articles in the next few PENnants.

Sheaffer bldg - reply

Sam, is that the Hesse building being threatened with demolition? Or the building that Sheaffer moved to immediately thereafter? Sheaffer production moved to the Hesse building in January of 1913.

The Hesse Building on the corner of Ave G and 7th St is fully restored, now offices, 2 private loft residences and the Ivy Bakery on street level. WA had an office on the second story of this bldg, also, another building in 600 block on Ave G, now a jewelry store that was WA's first location in Ft Madison is intact.

The building up against the wrecking ball is on current Sheaffer property at 401 Avenue H, it is surrounded by an un-used parking lot and is just west of the main Sheaffer facilities at 301 Avenue H. This buidling was originally a creamery, and while I don't have notes with me, I believe was purchased by Sheaffer in 1913 and production started there in 1914. Sheaffer notes in their company history that even though WA patented the lever fill in 1908, and pens were produced at that time, Sheaffer Pen was technically registered as a company in 1914.

Another glorious summer weekend in Melbourne.
      3/2/2001:  Peter Ford
Which weekend you may well ask. Well last weekend actually. The weekend before that was the bi-annual Australian Air Show (missed that, I was at The LA Pen Show), and this weekend is the Australian Grand-Prix (missing this, I’m catching up on sleep). Last weekend was The Third Melbourne Pen Show, and I think we have found a workable format. The pen community here is too small and widespread to sustain the two and a half day show we tried previously. This time we fitted it into a long day (Sunday), but with a small and social get-together for table holders on the Saturday afternoon (followed by a well attended dinner). Sunday morning started at 6.30am with our sponsors (the more committed major importer/distributors) given extra time to set-up. This extra time of course was also taken up by our eager table-holders and much trading was done between them before the early-entrant brigade arrived about 8am. The public were allowed in from 10.30am to 5pm, and they never stopped coming, helped on by the addition of radio advertising this year. With vintage pen dealers from around Australia and one from England (John & Greta Haynes, their second Melbourne Pen Show), there was quality, quantity and bargains in vintage pens, as well as other writing equipment, watches, knives and vintage Leica cameras. New pens were of course displayed by the sponsors and purveyed by the local pen specialist retailer. Collectors came from around Australia, Hong Kong and the Czech Republic (that’s what he entered on the questionaire), and they took away door gifts (pen with Melbourne Pen Show logo), door prizes and plenty of purchases. They attended mini-seminars and took part in Surprise Auctions (no surprise at all, they were scheduled). The end result – Success. All the feedback so far has been positive, and so we can safely say, “See you all next February for the 4th Melbourne Pen Show”.

Announcing the new look of my Parker 75 website
      3/1/2001:  Lih-Tah Wong
Hi Parker 75 fans.

After much delay that missed one month's installment, I have finally updated the Parker 75 website. I hope you like the new sections I added.

The original site is still there, but under the 'Reference' section. In that regard, the news here is that I believe I have deciphered the date codes found on some French-made Parker 75s.

Also in the news are the results of a recent Bonhams auction. I believe we now have a new record for the highest price ever paid for a Parker 75. I won't spoil it by telling you in this note; go and check out the website! :-)

Regards,
Lih-Tah

PS: As always, I welcome your feedback.

Parker 51 Nib Question
      3/1/2001:  joel_ellingson
I am considering purchasing a Parker 51 with a "ball point" nib. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with using this nib. I am a lefty who is looking for a very smooth writing broad nib. Any comments concerning the thickness, the wetness or the consistency of the line width would be appreciated. Thanks

Modern Duofold Nib Codes?
      3/1/2001:  Bruce Pasarow
Does anyone know what a nib code of "83" means on a Parker Duofold Centennial pen from the late 1980's-early 1990's? Are there other codes for Centennial nibs besides the usual markings of F, M, B, etc? Does anyone have any experience with how one marked 83 feels and writes? Does the same apply for Duofold International pens? Thanks for your help. Bruce Pasarow

51st Anniversary for the Parker "51" Flighter
      3/1/2001:  Len Provisor
Fifty-one years ago yesterday, on February 28, 1950 Parker held an Annual Stockholders Meeting and made offer of their new "airplane-ized" "51" fountain pen. It was offered at that meeting for $29.75 to stockholders. A prior introduction, possibly the first print illustrating this Flighter pen, was shown in the Parker Sales catalog dated Oct. 1949. The finished design of this "airplane-ized" fountain pen was greatly influenced by Mr. Kenneth Parker's corporate aircraft purchased in 1946. This was the sleek and powerful silver twin-engine Beechcraft D18S. The Parker "51" was first introduced in 1941, and was named after Parker's 51st Anniversary commemorating the year the pen came out of research. Very likely more popular now than ever in it's 60 year history, "KP", as affectionately called by Janesville employees, must be very pleased. Visit WWW.INKBLOTTERS.COM to read the story of this aircraft and the development of the "51" Flighter.
