| FS: Fossilized Mammoth Ivory FP/BP set Pelikan Components by Grayson Tighe

|
Well, colleagues, here is a nice set of writing instruments you don't see very often. Constructed of Pelikan components by master craftsman Grayson Tighe, this fountain pen and ballpen set (M800 size) is made of fossilized mammoth ivory. Legal for export and construction, these writing instruments have terrific craftsmanship. The ivory is cream colored with subtle variegations and striations that don't show up well in the picture. Check out Grayson's website for more info (http://tigheknives.com/CustomPens.html). Per h is website, an ivory M1000 FP alone goes for $900. My pair (FP and the BP) is out the door for $975, including delivery by Fedex (basically the ballpen is just about free!). The set is perfect; FP filled just once - wrote less than two pages. Comes with Pelikan 18K medium nib.
Check out my set at:

Any questions, lemme know!

I putted over 20 Pelikan pens in, incl. 800`s and 1000`s. All these pens
camed back from a shop, does means they are mint, but maybe tested and
dipped. Unbelivable prices on these. Ask for mint pieces if you prefer
"fresh and untouched" pens! Thanks for looking.

Craig, this pen is not a button filler. First of all, don't try to twist the end cap if there is resistance. The end cap is supposed to twist only about one half turn, which rotates a bent wire inside the barrel that depresses the rubber sac, which is likely hardened with age. About one inch above the end cap you will see a metal metal "dot" on each side, which is the retaining wire that runs through the pen to secure the pressure wire and holds the whole thing togethor. It is best to have this restored professionally. Security pens in mottled hard rubber are especially rare and valuable, you can e-mail me and I will recommend a few reliable restorers. |

I bought Security Pen at an antique store the other day, you know the one with the little perforation wheels concealed beneath the top cap for embossing signatures. Well, the filling mechanism seems to short a few pieces and I was wondering if any of knew how the thing was intended to fill in the first place. Looks like it could have been a buton filler. Hi, I'm Richard and I'll be your waiter this weekend. We have the following specials:
1. Pelikan 590 Celebry -- This model is not imported into the U.S. Features a gold-plated cap, 14K nib and a satin finished gold colored section. Pen is a nice weight with metal section and brass barrel with lacquer finish in green or blue marble. I also have a roller ball in the blue if you would like to inquire about it. I only have a few of these -- returns from another pen shop. A few have been dipped, but all are new. Only one broad nib available, by the way. Other choices are fine and medium. Price $109. Retail on this was $200 or $225 U.S. Great looking pen.
2. Pelikan 100 FP/BP set. This is another non-U.S. Pelikan selection. Pens are white with black trim and the nib on the fountain pen is also finished in black. A neat little piston-filler at a great price. $52.50
Check these deals out at:

Also, if you're interested in a Platinum music nib pen, I will add those to the site this weekend. Contact me by e-mail for pricing in advance on those and the Armour and Workhorse pens.

I recieved a ST Dupont pen. It is in the box with all of the papers that probably came with it. On the end of the box is: 455279 BILLE/MINE FIDELIO LAQUE CORAIL
The pen looks silver with gold trim and is heavy for a pen. I don't think that the pen has ever been used. The silver is tarnished a little. I would like the age, value, and any other information that you may be able to give me. I don't collect pens, so your honesty could be rewarded |

6/28/2002: Michael |

I work at a pen store now (summer job) and I know that the prices for MB writer's series are doubled, but the 4810 series are tripled. On top of that the owner will not sell any of the 4810 for less than triple cost because he believes that they are increasing in value so much. What I'm trying to say is that some people really won't sell on thin margins because theyy believe the prices are just going to keep rising and eventually someone will drop $3000 on a Karl the Great. Michael. |

We have the Pelikan refillable roller ball pens along with refills in black and blue using the special "roller ink." The ever adventurous crew at Stylophiles reports that ordinary long international cartridges will also work in this unusual pens. This pen makes a good writer and would be good to carry in a purse or leave in your desk drawer in addition to just a nice pen to have in meetings when the sloth next to you asks to borrow a pen and you have no intention of giving him that Waterman No. 5 with the stub nib to use.
Special is as follows:
Buy all four colors (wine, turquoise, lemon and apple) for $28 (retail is $8.99 each). Drop me an e-mail to buy these cool pens. Also, don't forget to ask about refills -- either the ones made for this pen or regular long Pelikan refills.
If you want to have a look, go to:

Also, don't forget about the Magic Pencil. We have received a new shipment. Everyone just loves these things. Give one to somebody and they just can't help coloring with it. We have these at $1.79 each or three for $5.

| vintage pen pricing
|
| |
6/27/2002: isaacson |
|
Vintage and Modern pen pricing are apples vs oranges. Vintage pens were made (mostly) as fancy utilitarian items, that became worthless after depreciating much as does a new automobile. Vintage pens have value today only due to creation of a secondary market as hobbyists began to seek out these "worthless" items. Certainly, still have a retail-wholesale spread (though ebay etc have blurred that a bit for both vintage and moedern), but it is a different market from that of any modern item in which a manufacturer attempts to set and hold a fixed price. |
| pens as "investment"
|
| |
6/27/2002: david isaacson |
|
Fancy LE pens indeed are beautiful works of art. They inspire our writing (for those with the gut to ink 'em up), and are source of admiration and enjoyment. I even own a couple. But investments??!! In most hobbies, modern LE's generally provide not-so-hot returns, whether Proof Coins or LE pens. Probably 75% of all LE's since 1990 retail for much less than original price. And for the wee lil' collector, one must then figure that wholesale price is 50% or less of retail. To make money one must have the one-in-however many pen that doubles in price just to get you to breakeven. I have couple LE's. I really like them. If you like the artistry of a Rossi or Tighe, then by all means buy a great pen, but be vewwy vewwy careful about assuming it is a path to riches. |
| Investing in pens
|
| |
6/27/2002: Stephen Lam |
|
I believe new pens are very poor investment vehicles. You probably end up losing money in the long run. Dealers are making a living selling new pens because of the margin. I have been collecting pens for almost 20 years but I have yet to see fellow collectors (not dealers) making a profit hording new pens. Occasionally, with vintage pens, successful flea market frequenters may chance on bargains and make profits out of them. Generally speaking, however, I will only suggest to my worse enemies to buy pen (vintage or new) as an investment. The early Montblanc LEs were a few exceptions but even those have in my opinion reached prices that most collectors with more sense than dollars should keep away from. The other "very limited" limited editions, because of the small numbers involved, are subject to easy price manipulation. For those, even auction house prices are not reliable, in my opinion. I buy and sell pens for fun and that is the operative word for me. |

In case anyone is wondering, that's all it takes in average annual return to turn 3k into 5k in 20 years. 3k stuffed in a mattress today proably won't be worth 5k in 20 years, but i almost certainly will come closer than the LE. |

Rick, if you ever want to replace that cap with a correct ripple pattern, the #52 size is one of the most common and easiest to find for replacement, and not very expensive either. You should someday attempt to attend one of the larger pen shows where you will very likely find what you need. You would have to eyeball the cap to match the degree of perfection of fading to match the pen barrel. To see a very nice Waterman woodgrain, go to this Penlover's Home Page and look at the very bottom right side for the giant #20 Waterman woodgrain pen. Then go to Pen Collections, click on the Swisher Collection, as you scroll down you will see pens made in ripple hard rubber, it's a Swisher, not Waterman, but almost identical to Waterman ripple.
Penlovers is working on a future Stylophile's article and Pen Collections covering Waterman pens, and the hard rubber materials will be included for identification. |

Thanks to Don Lavin and Len Provisor for the commentary about my ill-fated ripple purchase. The pen was displayed in the auction and I should have seen it was mismatched. So I will live with my mistake. I guess it is the old Catholic school education manifesting itself in my guilt over being so foolish. But as I tell my clients all the time, sometimes the mistake you make is worth more than the money you lost in the current transaction. I am much more cautious now in bidding on eBay. It is amazing how accommodating people are when you ask questions. And the discussion on this board is great. I agree that limited editions are not that big a deal. This is the same in the book world. The way it is described is that the item was made to be collected which takes away from the fun of acquiring a true collectible which is an item, here a pen, which over the years has EARNED its collectibility. For one thing it is likely to be hard to come by. I have decided to put together a modest pen collection with some of the highlights of the great pens such as Dorics, Ripples and Vacumatics. Rick |

My two cents on ltd editions is that they should be bought to be used, as I do. Personally a MB ltd edition to 25 000 pieces is not exactly limited to me, and I don't think these pens will rise in value extraordinarily, simply because people will eventually realize that their is a ton of supply out there...enough to meet their demand. That's not to say they shouldn't be bought... I love using my Bach and Dickens pens, but I'm just not going to buy them and keep them in a box for 20 years. Michael. |

| LE Value
|
| |
6/27/2002: Donald |
|
With all respect. The people hawking the value of LE's are usually the people selling them. The average collector probably thinks LE's are 90% overblown hype and even the few good ones usually make terrible investments. Very few LE's have risen in value far above the inflation rate, and even then its usually if only kept mint, never inked in their maybe still sealed box. To say what any pen "is going for" begs the questions "to whom, when and where? and is it one buyer with big money and a desire for one pen or are they many ready and willing buyers available for several of those pens at that price? " Ebay with enough hype and fancy descriptions maybe there are a few. At the average pen show with people who know pens better I doubt it. |
| The Economics of Limited Editions
|
| |
6/27/2002: Lynn Brant |
|
If, as Alan says, a pen worth 3000 to 3500 today will be worth 5000 in 20 years, that is a horrid investment. It would no doubt be a significant loss in real dollars even with 20 years of low inflation. Pens are a good investment in fun and joy and in many other ways, but they are a lousy financial investment. |

Hal, I must argue your point. If you've ever heard or seen the work of pen makers such as Paul Rossi, Paul DuClos, Kane Boutry, David Oscarson or Michel Perchin I think you'd sing a different tune. Their work continues to go up in price almost on a yearly basis and is highly sought our by collectors worldwide. Last year I sold Rossi's for 2500.00, today the same basic pen is 3000.00 to 3500.00. Twenty years from now these same pens will bring over 5000.00. The average Rossi edition is 10 to 12 pens. |

(relatively) old sheaffer
pen that I thought I had
lost 10 years ago. I always
had trouble finding refills
even when it was new but
now I can't even find out
what model of pen it is! I
seem to remember it being
called "Slim Executive"
or something to that effect.
I am almost certain that it
had the word slim in the name.
It's a pretty thin pen (looks
about the same width as the
targa models, but I only paid
about $30-50 for it at the time
(1991) so that seems unlikely.
If anyone could point me in
the right direction, it would
be greatly appreciated!

Mort---Don't start filing on that nib! Why not call Parker and do a nib exchange and see if the new nib is better? Also, the sonnet nib is a bit soft----unlike the duofold and aurora nibs--- and if you have a heavy hand you might be spreading the tines too much and causing the nib to catch on the paper. I am no pen expert but filing down a nib is not that easy, though you can learn how to do it. John |

I just bought a new Parker Sonnett with a medium nib. After I inked it I wrote with it some. I noticed it seemed scratchy. The ink flow was great, but it seems to drag especially on up strokes. A couple of months ago a bought a new Duofold and it was smooth as silk. Same with my Aurora I got afew months ago. Is there a way I can get the nib smoother? Or does it just take time it break in. I have wondered if people file on the nibs to make the smooth. I bought this sonnett new on line.I would like to hear any feedback on this.

Hi all Penlovers:
Time to tidy up those matching sets now. We have a few Pelikan
rollerball and ballpoint pens in stock in the translucent green and red. The ballpoints are especially cool because you can see all the inner workings and because they will accept the new Parker gel refills.
Here's the link to see the pens:

Don't, however, order from there. Instead order via e-mail for our
special pricing. The ballpoints we are offering at $34 and the
rollerballs we are offering at $39. These prices are plus shipping.
Also, we have a Pelikan 250 rollerball that came in as a special order that a customer changed their mind on in blue/black that we are also offering at $39.
First firm e-mails get the pens.

I think there is another side to looking at LE's, the manufacturers are really only interested in retailing their product & what happens after that i.e. the secondary market or pre-owned market is too small to worry about. So because it is a small market the smaller names have as good a chance as the bigger names in appealing to niche collectors & the probability that artists proofs of small run pens will find their level too. |

Allan Gross wrote " The smaller the edition size the greater the demand." This could be true for say Parker, MontBlanc, Namiki etc. but for smaller obscure makers it's irrelevant as the appeal is minimal. You only have to see the long term results on ebay to see the laughable results attained by the "exclusive" high retail jewelry-based limited editions by unknown brands that represent the worst kind of investment. |

I am sure that you will hear many different honest opinions, all of which may reflect different experiences, personal preferences, etc. I have been using several Parker 51's, all of which were in excellent condition when acquired. They are half a century old. Nibs range from fine to bold. I find the 51's to be the smoothest pens of all fountain pens that I have ever used. |

I have a question similar to the one mentioned below. My question is: what are considered by a good number of people to be the best writing pens/nibs of the vintage FPs? I mean 1910s to 1960. I'm excluding in this question specialty nibs (obliques, stubs, and extra flex). I'm wondering about a real SMOOTH writer with nice flow...
I'd also appreciate any direction on where someone may have written on the topic. Thanks all. |

Hi Lynn. Great to hear from you especially since I have not seen you for quite a while. Your advice is always welcome and your new ebook sounds really great. | Vintage pens to buy
|
| |
6/25/2002: Don Lavin |
|
Michael, As a collector of vintage pens for over 30 years I can honestly say that all pens are different and each nib is a one of a kind object. I suggest that you consider buying a Wahl Eversharp pen from the late 20's with personal point nibs as they can be changed readily by screwing them in and out like Esterbrooks. Wahl provided a wide range of nibs many with exc. flex. Parker Duofolds from the 20s and 30s tend to have little or no flex as do the Sheaffers from the 20s. Watermans from the 20s and 30s and 40s also can be found with nice large flexible nibs. I sugggest the ripple series in sizes 52, 54 or 55. The 56s are great but will cost more money. The 58s are quite expensive. Waterman Patricians from the 30s are very expensive and do not have any flexible nibs to speak of. There are 1,000s of exc. vintage pens that can possibly suit you however, without trying the nib first, it is a pot shot. At pen shows, many collectors who are also users try out potential purchases extensively before buying and some dealers, like Susan Wirth, actually arrange their displays according to the style of nib. Good luck. If you have any further questions you can always contact me back channel. Don |

Rick: Over the years, others have posted mentioning problems with capping the pen. Someone on another board told me he got one of the new abalone ones and the cap posted well. Hi. I have purchased several vintage pens lately, all disappointing me in the feel and writing quality. If possible could someone suggest a couple of vintage pens with , medium to large flexible nibs and a little bit of weight to them. Nothing too narrow either. Thanks a lot in advance. Your help truly is appreciated as I continue to learn about and appreciate pens more. Michael. |

We would like to express our thanks to the owners of this board for providing a public open source of information and a vehicle for trading, buying and selling pens. The fact that this is a broad medium, offering a free forum to all is the most important aspect of it. Rather than push one's interests or agenda, whether they consist of vintage pens, modern ones, or whatever, we should be glad to have an opportunity to employ this board in the first place. Furthermore, not only is it free to all, but the effort that goes into maintaining it should be appreciated by one and all. The truth of the matter is that a fairly significant number of people visit this forum on a regular basis, indicating how important and successful it really is. As a last note, just think about what will happen if this board will suddenly disappear. Thank you. |
| Artist Proof / Limited Editions

6/25/2002: Allen Gross |
|
Simply put, an "artist proof" is generally the artist's proof item, be it a painting , sculpture or a pen ,that is offered to the publisher for the purpose of producing a limited edition. Value might increase for that item ONLY if the proof varies from that of the actual numbered edition. Ofcourse, rarity becomes a factor as well. The smaller the edition size the greater the demand. |

I pretty much never post here anymore and, honestly, scan messages only about once a month. But I can't help responding to Dudley (whom I don't know) especially since he mentioned my name. I frankly think the board is doing a pretty good job and I imagine any new/vintage bias reflected on the board is a function of the reality in the hobby itself rather than anyone's plan. I miss the good old days of this board (we used to get 30 - 40 posts a day) but I also miss the good old days of pen collecting in general..... it does seem to have changed a lot. But again, what's on a bulletin board reflects the collective minds of its users and isn't good or bad. Congrats to those who keep plugging away especially those who take time to respond to inquiries from newer collectors. My major pen thing right now is doing a small book. I think it will be an ebook with lots of pictures and my plan is to give it away. It will be my take on the Wahl "blood red" color, its history, and what I know for sure about it plus a lot of what is my best guess. There will be pictures of every blood piece in my opwn collection of over 30, plus a few from other collections. As such it will show and discuss every known model and variation in this color, bring a little clarity to what is often confusion - and hopefully even flush a few more blood pens out of the bushes! Now all I have to do is stop planning it and actually do it. Regards, Lynn |

| Hard rubber woodgrains, ripples and mottled
|
| |
6/25/2002: Len Provisor |
|
Rick's comments reminds me that many people just do not recognize the difference among these black/red hard rubber patterns.
Once recognized, it is pretty obvious. Mottled is a very random pattern of red "splotches" which is added to black hard rubber. This was the most common form of red/black hard rubber. Ripple pattern I beleve was exclusive to Waterman, and appears as a uniform pattern to simulate a "spray" of red lines in black hard rubber. Woodgrain was also used by Waterman, and as the name implies, it appears like a woodgrain pattern of red mixed in black hard rubber. Waterman also made ripple patterned pens in olive/black, blue/black and green/black, I believe almost exclusive to their #94 pens. I have seen a rippled HR Waterman Patrician (experimental), and a great variety of other patterns of red/black, but the most common is the random mottled pattern. Wahl Eversharp pens in mottled are quite attractive, and a rare olive colored mottle was used on some ovesize Personal Point pens and desk sets.
European mottled patterns are distinctly different from American made mottled pens, and I have seen a variety of experimental red/black/yellow/orange/white combinations as well as many other colors in swirls, ripples, and mottled patterns. I'll try to find an image source for these variations and advise later. |

| Mismatched ripples
|
| |
6/24/2002: Don Lavin |
|
Sorry to advise you Rick but Ripple pens had matching ripple caps and woodgrain pens had matching woodgrain caps. All too often we find these marriages resulting from damage which occurred many years ago. It seems that whatever fit was used whether the cap and barrel matched or not. It is possible that the dealer did not recognize the difference and sold the pen as he or she found it. A recognized pen dealer would know the difference. Did you check the feedback of the seller and check to see if he or she was selling pens? If so, I would ask for a refund based on the marriage and the misrepresentation. Good luck. Let us know what happens. Don |

| Waterman Ripple Oddity
|
| |
6/24/2002: Rick Kalamaya |
|
I suspect most who participate on this board have, like myself, had some ups and down on eBay. Not long ago I bought my first Waterman Ripple, a 52, from this dealer in England. The pen didn't write as represented, the sac had been installed poorly and the feed was all gunked up. But I fixed those problems and decided to keep the pen. I cost me less than $100 and I really like the looks of these pens. But several weeks down the road and much too late to return the pen I noticed an anomoly that passed me by at first. The pen itself is clearly a ripple pattern with nickel lever and the 52 marked on the end of the barrel. But the cap really looks like that wood grain pattern which I have come to understand was a different design than the ripple pattern. The clip is also nickel and the cap does not have a cap band. I have understood that the earlier ripples didn't have the cap band. And the cap fits nicely on the pen. Is it possible the pen is all original? Can a ripple pattern have a wood grain cap? Any insight would be appreciated.

| Artist proofs on limited editions

Re the posting by N.O'Body; probably the same criteria apply as to the quality, desirability,& proprietary name of the maker in determining the relative values for artists proofs.
In the future it is not evident that rush-to-market unheard-of-brand expensive limited edition pens will fare any better than the ill-conceived Leboeuf relaunch or dubious other attempts at trying to wring a buck out of decades-old names.Only quality should survive on a value basis, & history seems to confirm this. If you had a proof from let's say the Waterman Edson Boucheron it would not be unreasonable to imagine it's heightened value to collectors in the future, however a proof of one of the innumerable small limited edition producers could well be virtually worthless. |

| THANK YOU Sam, Rick, PCA and PENnant
|

6/24/2002: david isaacson |
|
This vintage pen collector owes a heartfelt "Thank you!" to Sam Fiorella, Rick Propas and the PENnant magazine. Rick is doing a terrific job with the magazine, and Sam was kind enough to invite me to place a classified ad in the most recent issue.
I think back to that moment when Sam approached me back at the LA show in February. With a mischievous gleam in her eye she said, "So, David. Perhaps you would like to contribute $25?". This question had the flavor of a very matter of fact statement. Having learned that it is usually a good idea to listen when Sam makes an...err...suggestion, i said, "Sure, why not. But...ummm. what am i contributing to?"
Realize that I enjoy vintage pendom and collect casually a number of series of pens. But my focus of course is on the Parker Vacumatic and its progressively more scarce predecessors, the Parker Vacuum-Filler and Parker Golden-Arrow.
Sam went on to explain that the PCA was raising funds and the next issue of PENnant would institute a page of short, sweet classified ads to let collectors easy broadcast buy/sell interests. Would i perhaps wish to advertise my interest in the Parker Vacumatic?
Well, i forked over the cash, but i concede that i had doubts. We live in the internet age. Everyone is connected. Anyone can put pens for sale on numerous newsgroups, on webpages or on internet auction sites. The days of hunting pens in "the wild" are fading fast for the average collector, and most hobbyists do not have an extensive network of pen-source connections. What were the odds that my little ad expressing interest in "interesting Parker Vacumatic, Parker Vacuum-Filler, and Parker Golden-Arrow pens", buried on page of such ads, would yield any results? I figured the odds were poor. But still, the cause was good, and I hate saying "no" to Sam
Who would have figured?
One week or so after the spring issue of the PENnant completed distribution, i received an email from a pen collector in Europe. This email was accompanied by pictures. This nice collector noted that he had seen my ad in PENnant, happened to have a spare Parker Golden-Arrow in very nice shape, and wondered if perhaps i might wish to purchase the pen?
The upshot of this is that this somewhat...well... uncommon pre-Vacumatic pen was in great shape. The price he asked was quite fair. Certainly no super-bargain (nor should it have been in a collector-to-collector trade), it certainly provided a great pen in great shape at a good price.
The pen arrived today. It is a crisp silver-pearl example, with excellent imprint, in the very nifty Stubby size that is appreciated by collectors of early Vacs. Indeed, the only other Golden Arrow pen in my collection was one passed my way by a nice collector at the Houston Show last year. Naturally it was another PCA member who introduced us at that show. So, i suppose i owe the PCA thanks for both the Golden-Arrow pens in the collection.
Here is the pen, in a shrunken pic for the web
http://www.vacumania.com/penteach/GoldenArrowRawSharpfram.jpg
Thanks to Sam, the PCA, Rick and the PENnant, i have been lucky to find a couple of the most significant pens in my relatively new vintage pen collection. Everyone should join the PCA. Talk about bang for the buck.
Best regards
David Isaacson

What I have done to stop ink from leaking through the PFM shell or hood, is to remove the shell and point, and to swab the inside with shellac on a "Q" tip. Shellac can be thinned with denatured alcohol to make it flow more easily into crevices. Father Terry |

| PFM nib leak
|
| |
6/21/2002: Joyce Levy |
|
As a PFM fan, I have encountered this problem in more than one pen. Father Terry Koch, the Sheaffer expert, has helped me by putting a sealer on the leaking area from the inside. (Don't know how - I'm not that technically savvy.) He also says (and I think this was the cause in my case) to follow the original filling instructions: just dip the snorkel. If you dip the whole nib, it will collect ink inside that will last a while, and make you think it is leaking. Hope this helps. |
| PFM nib leak- solution?
|
| |
6/21/2002: Mo |
|
I've encountered various PFM pens which allows ink to seep through between the edge where the metal nib and plastic mate around the 'diamond' area. This then stains the finger.
I've seen a few which did this so this is not an isolated case.
It seems obvious that there is some separation between the metal nib and the plastic body, allowing ink to wick through. (Am I making sense?)
Is there an easy solution to this problem? I was wondering if one can remove all the innards, leaving just the nib shell and then putting very liquid (low viscosity) super glue on the seam and flexing it a little and then alowing the super glue to wick in and seal/glue the seam. Sounds like a plan?
Any thoughts from you pros?
Thanks in advance,
Mo |

Nancy, when I purchased my 61 fountain pen in January 1962, I also purchased a bottle of Quink black; it was cobalt and diamond-shaped bottle. In the late seventies, I noticed that the ink was packaged in the little black plastic bottles. I am sure that the cobalt bottles came about before 1962. With my 61 and 51 pens, I still use the Quink ink. I do hope that this helped. I do search for these bottles too. |

1. Aurora Style ballpoint -- black and chrome. Works great and looks cool with that Parker gel refill. In fact, if you order one before this weekend at our price of $27.25 (Retail $35), I'll throw in a gel refill for free. How's that?
2. Aurora Style Fountain Pen -- black and chrome. Nib choices are fine and medium. Our price is $41.25 (Retail $55) Buy it before this weekend and I'll toss in a Magic Pencil. Go to www.penspiration.com and click on "fun stuff" and you'll see what I mean.
3. Aurora Ipsilon De Luxe with 14K Italic Nib. Pen comes in black or blue (check out the Aurora page on the website) Order before this weekend at $73 and I'll toss in a bottle of blue or black Aurora ink --your choice. (Other nib choices are available, let me know what you like)

Anyway, we're away from the shop this week for vacation (nyahh, nyahh), so send me an e-mail if you're interested and I'll make you great price on this (How about $7.50 and if you buy more than one, I'll pick up the shipping?) and I'll ship them when we return. Hi,
I bought an Omas 1930 FP. It's a small FP that looks like a Paragon.
Anyway I'm having some problems with it.
When I carry it around, I notice there's
in on the nib and in the cap. On investigation,
it seems if you shake it ink will splash out

this normal on an Omas? If not, what is the
the problem? An air leak?
Can I send it back to Omas for repair?
I kinda like this pen.

It just occurs to me you may already
know how to fix these pens and I may
have underestimated your current
ability. Sorry 'bout that. At any
rate, I'd give 'er a good soak
overnight upside-down in a glass of
water with a few drops of
hand-dishwashing detergent mixed in,
then try again. Also you will
probably have to use heat either as
Frank describes in his book or
directly on the pen body itself in
the thread area. And finally, don't
overlook the slight possibility
that some moron actually glued
(epoxied or CA'd/Super Glued) the
filler threads to the pen body. I
have no solution for that one. WJD |

Could be dried ink or whatever was used to seal the threads
when the pen was assembled last. At any rate, judicious
application of heat should do the trick. Details (tools
and procedures and cautions) too many to get into here
but they're available in Frank Dubiel's Guide to Fountain
Pen Repair; send Frank mail at FDubiel@aol.com and he'll

I'm looking for Very Small Pens. If you have some of these tiny little things (3.5" or less) clogging up your pen displays and need room for bigger stuff, let me know what you have. I might even trade something big for it. For me, bigger is not always better. If you are a collector of small pens, let's compare notes. thanks, Don

I have a Waterman Phileas (sp?) pen with a rollerball tip. I have found that, using this pen regularly (daily journaling), I get about one week of good, dark, consistent ink on the page. After that, I get one to two weeks of very thin, irregular, and inconsistent writing quality. Is this normal?
Thanks for your help-

On the subject of my little tirade.... Some public thanks for some of the folks who have contributed on vintage Pen subjects: David Isaacson did a great piece on the Slender Maxima debate, and coming up next month, we're very pleased to have an article on a couple of rare Parker 75s, from who else but Lih-Tah Wong!
Not to mention some thanks to Don Lavin who arranged for us to shoot some great rare pens at the Chicago show. Bill R. |

Hey Dudley! Sorry that the site is full of "useless crap".... Guess I can stop wasting my time with Stylophiles, right? You know, if you feel there's too much emphasis on "new pen issues", you could always contribute an article or two on your favorite vintage pen. It's always tough to find good vintage pen content, it's easy enough to review a modern pen, but to find someone willing to put the time into researching and writing about a vintage pen or company is much tougher. We're always happy to receive contributions on vintage pens. We'll work out a way to do the illustrations, and we've got a great editor lady who will be happy to put in all the commas and so forth, so please feel free to contribute if you have a favorite vintage subject! | Rare Parker #47 (Pregnant Parker - c.1910) for auction
|
| |
6/20/2002: Jim Griffiths |
|
Hello all,
Roger and Victor at Penopoly (www.penopoly.com) have asked me to handle the auctioning of several rare and valuable fountain pens. Tonight I began an auction for an extremely rare Parker #47. This model, with its mother-of-pearl body, is famous for the bulge in its barrel which gives it the nickname "The Pregnant Parker" (see Lambrou's "Fountain Pens of the World" page 63 for a picture of a similar model).
This pen has an extremely interesting history, which is mentioned in the auction description, and detailed in the article "The Great Parker Find" in Stylophiles (May 2002). The URL of the article is:
http://www.PenLovers.net/stylophiles/may02/05pkr.htm
The URL for the auction is:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2114853635
You can search by my eBay ID (gryff) to see the other auctions which I have created for Penopoly.
Thanks!

It seems "allen" and his other personas have, by coincidence of course, managed to vent spleen and "chastise" Classic Pens on at least three penboards with near simultaneity. I am awed by the power or randomness in our society. Most of allan's complaints were pretty well debunked on Pentrace, which is fine. Fact is, most penlists encourage and to degree depend upon on-list sales as mechansim to maintain interest. Those of us who mostly buy pens are exposed to modern and vintage pens, often at sub-retail levels, through this mechanism. It encourages us to keep looking. More to point, whatever *we* might think the lists "depend on" or are "intended for", it really isn't our call, other than by voting with our feet. The lists are structured by their owners and moderators. It is a tad presumptious for any of us to chastise just one seller amongst many who sell similarly, for having the chutzpa to use the list in a way that is wholly acceptable to those who own the list. Dude- if'n ya are a sad enough case that none of Andy's pens appeal to you in any way, then just...like... ya' know..... skip the fershlugginer post. Of course that is only a suggestion. I would never "tell" you what to do. Best regards. David |

We are tring to help a customer sell a 20-pen case by Venlo, which he received as a gift. This is the "Sicily" model made of calfskin leather of the highest quality. This black case is beautifully designed, handcrafted, and is very elegant. Made in Italy, from where some of the best leather goods come, it usually sells for retail price; even at internet auctions. List price is $429. If you wish, please make an offer. Thank you. |

Dave Isaacson has quite an erudite reply. I've not seen zoss yet but maybe it's there as well. Perhaps Allan has a bone to pick with CP and Lambrou. Surely it's not purely an altruistic matter of principle.
Andy is as Lambrou does. It's the general opinion of posters here that he should advertise and help support the pen boards we all frequent. Maybe he cannot affoerd it. I do not know.
In any event there was a clarification by management about one ad posted per week.

| Latest Lambrou-Sunami design
|
| |
6/17/2002: Classic Pens |
|
With respect to the latest Artist Proof #6, this comprises inlay of blue and white pearl along with pure gold and coral. Many pen lovers who have seen the pen at the recent Miami show were simply outstanded with its beauty and workmanship. It is a little more costly than previous Lambrou-Sunami fountain pens, white pearl is fairly thick and a special company have to cut the stripes to the exact length, width, and thickness that is required for the pen. More so, while there are 44 stripes of pearl (blue or white) round the pen body, since the cap, barrel and blind cap have decreasing circumferance, the width of the pearl stripes is accordingly reduced so that the rectangles (checker board design) match perfectly.

| J pen spacer
|
| |
6/17/2002: David Nishimura |
|
If you remove the spacer in order to put in a larger sac, you will also have to modify the lever. Otherwise I don't think the new, larger sac will be fully compressed.
And having a sac that starts out only partially filled with ink is not the best way to avoid the blobbing and increased flow that results when a sac has too much air and not enough ink inside. |
| re: Esterbrook J Pen
|
| |
6/17/2002: Waco Johnny D |
|
That's not bad for an Esterbrook, especially if is has the special
sac adapter/shim that allowed the company to use one size (small)
sac across the entire product line. When I repair these pens I
usually remove the adapter and install a larger sac which allows a
longer write-out. Of course write-out depends also on nib type,
flow adjustment, ink selection, and proper build/restoration. You
may not get the final answer to your question until you pull your
pen apart. Hope this helps. WJD.

| Pens For Sale
|

6/15/2002: Doug Vicary |
|
I have a bunch of pens for sale. I can provide pics if you're interested. 1. Marlen Euro Special Edition, blue, 18k medium nib, piston filler- This is an attractive Marlen special edition fountain pen. It's a beautiful blue resin with gold sparkling highlights. The pen is smooth and unadorned, but the clip is sterling and vermeil, and has 11 stars in vermeil, representing the countries distributing the Euro. There is also a great sculpted sterling band at the secion with a map of the countried in the EU. The pen has a smooth writing medium nib, and is a piston filler. It is in new condition, but has been inked once. No box or papers, sorry. $275 2. Sheaffer Legacy ballpoint, sterling silver- This is an unused Sheaffer sterling silver Legacy ballpoint, with the engraved pattern. I'm breaking up a set, I love the fountain pen but haven't touched the ballpen. New and unmarked. Retail would have been $225, I'd like $90. 3. Omas Senna Speed, yellow, broad steel nib, cartridge filler- This is an Omas Senna Speed fountain pen, yellow barrel with aluminum cap. Cool and sleek looking pen. This one has a smooth writing broad nib, and fills with Omas's cartridge system, which is like the one of the MB 147- it takes only cartridges, no converter can be used. This one has been used, but looks brand new. It has box and papers. $90 4. Marlen Chagall, blue, 18k broad nib, c/c filler- This is a beautiful fountain pen, a nice swirly blue resin. It has a sterling silver clip and cap band, and a platinum plated broad nib. The nib is great on this pen, slightly flexible and gives great character to the line. This one has been inked a few times, looks new (of course!) and comes with box and papers. $90
5. Waterman Preface, red, 18k stub nib, c/c filler- This is a striking bright scarlet Waterman Preface fountain pen with a new 18k stub nib. It has been inked once before the stub conversion (carried out by Waterman) and once since. Just too thin for me. Nice nib. Box and papers included. For all intents and purposes a new pen, and looks it. $90 6. Two Pilot Pens- I have a pair of Pilot fountain pens. One is a more traditional design, the other is sort of a Parker 51 style, with a semi hooded nib. They're both about 51 sized, too. The teal one has a gold plated
cap and end button, and a gold plated inlaid nib in fine size. The burgundy model has a traditional open nib, gold plated and medium in width. Both fill by cartridge or squeeze type converter. Both are new, though I think they were dipped at the pen counter. Nice pens in any case. I'd like $50 for the teal, $45 for the burgundy. 7. Waterman Facette, chrome, 18k medium nib, c/c filler- This is a late
60s/early 70s model Waterman. It's a slick little number, with a sparkling
faceted barrel and cap- 20 facets, I believe. It's all chrome plated,
including the clip. The section is black plastic and the nib is 18k yellow
gold. It's a bit on the small side, at 5 1/8" long, nearly 6" with the cap
posted. Doesn't have a converter, but I assume it takes the modern style of
cartridge and Waterman converter, not the old C/F cartridges. I believe
there's a picture of this in the big Lambrou book, in the French Waterman
section. $70 8. Aurora Ipsilon, yellow, gp medium nib, c/c filler- This is a nice yellow Ipsilon with a smooth writing medium nib. Has been inked, but is in new condition. Box and papers included. $45 9. Dani Brilliante LE, white/abalone, 18k medium nib, c/c filler- This is a very attractive Dani Brilliante fountain pen in an attractive ivory white resin with inlaid abalone shells on the barrel. It's very striking, much more attractive than the plain black model. This is number 37 of 300. The 18k gold nib is smooth and slightly flexible. Great writer. New condition, has been inked though. No box or papers. $125
10. Cross Townsend, Jade green, 14k broad nib, c/c filler- Very attractive Jade green Townsend fp with a smooth broad nib. Has been inked, but in new condition. Includes box, papers, and bottle of ink. $130
Please add $6 for insured shipping. Feel free to email with any questions: vicaryd@hotmail.com

Hi. I had a quick question about the ink capacity of an Esterbrook J pen. I just got it and filled it with ink, but by the netx day (about 8 pages of writing) the ink was all used up. Is that a normal amount of writing to finish all the ink? Did I not fill it all the way? Any help would be appreciated. Also, on the pen is a nib size 2668. How are the nib codes defined (EF, F, M, etc). Thanks in advance. |

Hey guys, this is my first post here. I'm new to the whole pen world. I recently found a few Mont Blanc pens in my closet, that have been untouched. (Don't ask me how lol). Anyway I've been trying to dig up info on these, but to no avail. If anyone could provide me with some candid insight on the value, rarity, and any other additional information, that would be great!!
This is the list of pens
1. Mont Blanc Edgar Allen Poe Ballpoint Pen, it is # 09815/15000.
2.Mont Blanc Noblesse. This pen has an 18kt gold tip and says "750" on the tip as well. On the outside of the pen, it says "M" and then Germany below it. The outside also looks as if it's 18kt gold as well. The date of purchase on this pen was back in 1993, according to the warrenty card. This is a fountain pen.
3. Mont Blanc Meisterstuck Ramses II pen. The pen has a green cap and the outisde part is gold. The outside also has the numbers "950" on it. This pen is a rollerball.
4. Mont Blanc Meisterstuck Solitaire pen. This pen is gold and is a ballpoint. The outside cover says "Ag 925" which I'm assuming pertains to the gold.
Thanks!

I have obtained a couple very early Parker 51 sets but no boxes. Does anyone have any or no where I could find a Parker 51 case from around 1941 to 1945 for a decent price? 1941 is preferred. I also had a question for anyone out there. I recently saw a Parker 51 set on ebay with aluminum jewels that was not a first year set. It had a later date code at the base of the barrel and the plastic plunger. Anyone ever seen one of these before?
Thanks for your help. |

Hi Dean and thanks for all your publicity on our show. I'm looking forward to seeing a review on it but from my point of view it was wildly successful. In 2003 we go back to our July slot which will be July 11-13. Next year Friday will be a full day. This year we opened to the public at noon and closed at 6 and just about 200 came through the doors and the ballroom was full of dealers, so next year three full days..Yippee. Our sponsor Conway Stewart had giveaways all three days so the public went away happy. Thanks again,

| Silly new Gel pen
|
| |
6/12/2002: Rob Cole |
|
anj119, Usually when a gel pen "sticks"
its due to air getting into the refill
cavity... Most, if not all, gel pens
are very fickle, in the sense that
they contain a very viscous type of
ink. Gel inks are very thick due to
the formulas needed to produce the
colors that make them so popular. If
air gets inside the refill, usually
through the gelatin plug at the end
of the refill, if it tears, or is
not properly fitted, it will stop the
gravity-feed process of the ink flow,
thus, "sticking". Now; a shameless plug...
Sailor makes a unique "nibless" pen
called the Gel Innovation, 1mm roller
ball (new section in Stylophiles; May 2002)
Take a look.. It's a hybrid gel that won't
dry out.. Yes, I mean it. Hope I was helpful...

Hello all!
After a hiatus of several months, I'm happy to report that I am once again stocked with the Hero '329', always one of the most popular of the Hero pens, and my own first exposure to the brand:
http://www.hisnibs.com/'329'_series.htm
The pen comes in one of three barrel colors: Jet Black, Burgundy or Dark Green. For those not familiar with the pen, here's a link to a review which appeared in Stylophiles online magazine last year, on the www.PenLovers.net site: http://www.PenLovers.net/stylophiles/2april2001/june_2001_hero.htm, as well as an earlier one from 1999 (the photos, of the Hero Dragon & Phoenix shell pen are obviously a mistake, explained here: http://www.hisnibs.com/reviews.htm).
Although a number of the '343' hand-painted models sold out again this weekend, here's a link to the styles that are still left:
http://www.hisnibs.com/'343'_series.htm
Don't forget to take advantage of the June Special when ordering from the
website:

i browsed your bulletin board and i get the feeling this question may be a bit (ok, very) low-brow for this forum, but here i go anyway....
does anyone know how to "unstick" a "frozen" gel pen? i have tried many different brands, but it seems to be a problem throughout the industry. i have tried all the tricks i know, and short of buying a new set everytime i get stuck (which is highly cost prohibitive for me given the rate at which this occurs) i have "run dry" of ideas. (you will please excuse my lame attempt at humor.)
any suggestions?

| Cartier/Montegrappa
|
| |
6/10/2002: F. Pinc |
|
I wanted to say thank you to all the pen dealers who came to Miami/Fort Lauderdale for the 9th Annual Pen Show. It is always a pleasure seeing old friends and meeting new ones. However, I wanted to express my disgust with Cartier/Montegrappa with their current position on Pen Shows.
From what I have been told, Cartier/Montegrappa will not allow pen dealers to bring Montegrappa pens to any pen show. If a dealer is caught selling a Montegrappa pen and has an account with Cartier/Montegrappa, the dealer will lose the account. (Microsoft tried the same thing and the justice department came down on them.)
Basically Cartier is saying that since they are so big, they have the ability to stop a dealer from trying to make a living. However, the last time I looked, once you buy a pen you are the owner and the past owner has no say in who or where you sell the pen.
Cartier/Montegrappa's position is a restraint on trade but also strangles both the public and dealers who attend pen shows. This position also limits the visibility of Montegrappa at pen shows. The next thing Cartier/Montegrappa will say is that you cannot list the pens on the internet or you cannot sell a pen unless the customer physically comes to your store.
I know that some of you are saying that if you don't like it, don't sell the pens, but why don't we then all stick our heads in the sand and hope the problem just goes away. It won't happen.
Cartier/Montegrappa's position is wrong. If they wanted to "protect the price" then make the pens even more limited, but do not intimitate dealers by using threats of the possibility of losing a supplier. The last time I looked, this hobby/business was supposed to be fun, and Cartier/Montegrappa's monopolistic tactics went out 80 years ago. |

I am liquidating a fellow collector's vintage pen hoard and have two groups listed below for sale as lots only. These pens are all quite clean and while unrestored, the collector did polish them gently. Unless specified, none have any cracks, scratches, dings, engravings, etc., all have correct nibs. The first lot consists of the following 40's Duofolds: 1 brown and green striped 4 3/4' L BD clip, appears to work, a few teeth marks in the blind cap, slight bulge where filler resides. Smooth medium "V" nib, little brassing. #2, 3. 5"L brown and green striped 2 cap ring model with matching working pencil. Speedline filler, fine flex smooth nib. A few teethmarks in blind cap. Not working. #4. 5" L pink striped 2 band cap model, rough clip, irridium gone on nib, may work, good transparency. #5. 5" L Button fil black with jewelers band (never seen before on this model). Fine nib. See scans at http://members.aol.com/jonr529/duo4051.jpg and duo4052.jpg $105 including postage for all. Insurance extra.
The second lot consists of the following Sheaffers: #1. 5 1/4" LT Flat top B&P with initials on cap top, cap band and barrel. One cap crack at edge. Heavy brassing on clip ball and band--great smooth m-f LT nib. This will make a great user. #2. 4 1/2" LT B&P FT better than average color, brassed clip ball, none elsewhere. nice LT nib, needing minor adjustment (tines spread a bit-easy fix) #3. 4 1/2" LT jade (hardly any discoloration) RT extrafine LT nib, small initials engraved on barrel, tiny 1/32" cap crack at edge. #4. 5 1/4" L black 3-25 model, fine-medium 3-25 nib, clip ball brassed, no other problems--a clean pen. #5. I am looking for an ST Dupont Orpheo/Olympio Black Lacquer fountain pen (large size) with a medium nib. I saw Pengallery.com in Malayasia has them for $304.00. Does anyone know if this is a reputable dealer? If not, does anyone have one for sale?
Thanks. |

Hello all,
I am looking for a few parts. If anyone has one or all, please contact me back channel with price and
condition.
The first is an aluminum cap jewel for a "First Year" 51. I have a nice smooth silver capped pen that someone
actually took a saw to and cut a screw slot in the cap jewel! I never cease to be amazed at the indignities pens
suffer over the years!
I am also looking for a non-adjustable nib and matching feed from a standard sized Wahl Eversharp Doric or
Coronet. I'm hoping to find one in a medium or fine/medium. I want to put it into a Coronet that has the
world's crappiest writing extra fine Eversharp adjustable nib. I need the matching feed because my nib is set
onto a feed marked "ExF". That just won't give proper ink flow with a broader nib.
I've adjusted, set, readjusted, reset, fiddled, cajoled, smoothed, finagled, cussed at, opened, closed,
readjusted, re-reset, refiddle, etc, this $%^&$%$ nib way too many times for my now jangled nerves.
H E L P !
Thanks in advance,
Michael |

Hello all!
I'm happy to announce that I have more stock of the Hero '343' hand-painted
pens in stock, but they are, as usual, selling out fast:
http://www.hisnibs.com/'343'_series.htm
I have several rather interesting auctions closing on eBay tomorrow,
starting with one of 5 of the Sheaffer Imperial *ballpoints*, in various
colors,
including the Special Edition Holly. The bidding starts at $9.99:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2109532751
The brushed steel 'flighter' version of the Hero '200', which is a Parker 75
homage -- so much so that parts are interchangeable between the two pens:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2109522744
And 3 mint Sheaffer Imperials:
Hunter Green:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2109532819
White, with brushed steel cap:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2109532863
Emerald:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2109533530
Finally, I came across a neat site dealing with all things paper, which has
a timeline of the history of papermaking which is quite interesting:

| Weekend Pelikan Specials at Penspiration
|
| |
6/7/2002: Richard Jarvis |
|
Hi all Penlovers:
We have some cool things this weekend -- Pelikans straight from the home country. We have a limited number of Pelikan 200s in the Magenta Marbled and Tortoise striped colors. These are cool-looking pens and different from the usual 200 series pens. I have several nib widths available, but act now because I only have a few in stock for quick delivery. If you miss out this weekend, I can get more if they are available, however.
Also see the Red and Black Pelikan 150 Pen and Pencil Set we have also gotten from Europe. This is a neat looking set and the color is nice on this pen and makes it quite distinctive from your usual Pelikan 150.
As always, you can only find these deals by following the link below:
http://www.penspiration.com/specials_weekend_new_items.html
I would also like to add that we are stocked up (temporarily at least) on the ever popular $1 and $1.50 Dover pockeet-sized notebooks with the covers featuring well known art works and posters. You can see them at the following link:
http://www.penspiration.com/dover_notebooks.html
Also, make sure you click the stationery button to see the great deals we have on Pineider papers.
Thanks again,
Richard Jarvis

| Parker 51 Raised Band Cap
|
| |
6/6/2002: John Maloney |
|
The current issue of the PENNANT has as it's focus the Parker 51. Much useful information, but I have a question
relating to a 51 cap which is not mentioned in any of the articles. I overheard a dealer at the LA Pen Show explaining to a prospective buyer
that the Parker 51 with the blue diamond silver clip on the Lustraloy cap with the raised bands is only correct on the 1944 pen. This individual
went on to say that these caps were very rare, and his example was for sale for $300.00. Can anyone comment on the accuracy (or lack thereof) of this
statement as to the 1944 date? His explanation was that these caps were wartime production only, but following that reasoning a 1943 or 1945 date code would
also seem appropriate. Is the elevated price he quoted for this pen anywhere close to reality? Thanks. |

I think probably the majority of vintage collectors prefer pens that have not been engraved, but there are some who actually like engraved pens better because the engraving gtives them some real history, a connection to a recognizable (even if not famous) individual. I don't really care one way or t'other; if I want the pen, engraving won't drive me away. |

I made the coolest discovery when picking out books for the website this week. We have the newly published in English "Collectible Fountain Pens" by Juan Manuel Clark. Just in time for Father's Day, this wonderful, fat little tome is a gorgeous full-color book filled with wonderful pictures and concise factual descriptions of hundreds of pens. This 384-page book makes a great addition to you pen reference collection because it features such pristine versions of the vintage pens pictured. The Waterman Patrician is breathtaking in its mintiness!
Best of all is the price: $14.95 plus shipping. Order by this weekend and you'll have it for
Father's Day. Great gift for any pen nut.

Also, take a look at the Margaret Shepherd book -- we are getting good reviews back from those who have already purchased this neat little book on writing letters and notes.

Hello,
I hope you can help me. I am obsessed with trying to find a pen. I bought it a year ago at Staples, and now it seems it and the company that made it have vanished into thin air.
It is a gel ink pen with bits of silver flecks in the ink. It has PENTECH on the bottom with the copyright symbol. It's in a clear case with a black grip pad near the top. The top case is also clear and the clip is black and says "ICE-Gel Ink Roller. It is the best pen I have ever used and I want a least a box of them...I am anxious for any information you can get for me. If you don't have the pen, do you know who PENTECH is? Or, where they are?
Thanks in advance, Nikki B. (eightnotramp@hotmail.com)

| Sailor Pens & Nagahara Nibs
|
| |
6/5/2002: Chuck Swisher |
|
We met with the President of Sailor USA (Mr. Dick Egolf) on Monday and was afforded an opportunity to see and test several of the Nagahara nibs that we've been hearing about so much about lately. We also got a chance to preview most of the writing instruments that Sailor will be offering as regular line items to their U.S. dealers later this year. Mr. Egolf left several of these pens with us to give us an opportunity to get scans for our web site. For now, we only have pictures of these pens on our web site and will only be taking orders by e-mail or telephone. Once Sailor USA has the pens in stock, we will move them over to our shopping cart. Please
understand, most of these pens shown on this page will need to be made before they can be delivered. We have been told to expect a minimum (possibly longer) of 90 days for delivery from the time you place your order. The prices of some of these pens will vary, depending on which nib you order for your pen. To keep this e-mail somewhat short, please visit Stylophile's Online Magazine for several excellent articles written about these pens and the various Nagahara nibs in this month's issue. For now, if you would like to see scans of some of these pens, please use the link provided below. I would like to mention one of the pens on this page will probably not be available for long. It is the second one down from the top of the page and it is called "Birds On A River Bank". This may be the only one of these pens remaining and when it is sold there will be no more of this particular Maki-e produced (the artist that painted this pen has since passed away). This pen is somewhat expensive, but if you're looking for a unique gift for a special person (perhaps an Anniversary gift ;-), this might just be the pen for you. The retail price for this particular pen is $3,500.00, but please e-mail Chun Lee at chun@swisherpens.com for our special price on this pen and any of the other Sailor pens shown on this page of our web site.
http://www.swisherpens.com/Specials/Sailor_Special_Order.html
If you have any questions about these pens or the Nagahara nibs, please let us know (If we don't have the answers, we will try to get one for you). Also, Mr. Nobuyoshi Nagahara is planning to attend the DC Pen Show in
August and will be available to adjust the nibs on any Sailor pen purchased prior to, or during the Show. We hope to have a good selection of these and other Sailor pens available at the DC Show.
Thank you, we appreciate your business.
Best wishes,
Chuck Swisher at chuck@swisherpens.com

Kevin, did you say “stainless steel”?? Many great Parker Flighters out there in stainless steel. From the vintage ones all the way to the modern ones, which include the Frontier on the inexpensive side and the Sonnet, costing somewhat more. All great writers and durable yet not too heavy. You may also want to consider the all-stainless Aurora Style, this pen is Parker 51 in size, and it’s in your price range and is a very nice writing pen. And finally one that is not stainless steel but you may want to consider the all aluminum Lamy Safari a really great pen for around $30 and very light weight and durable. Dean |
| Crescent Filler
|
| |
6/4/2002: Dave Glass |
|
Michael - You didn't specify exactly what you wanted, but getting a Crescent Filler is always a great idea. They are frequently found with wonderfully flexible nibs (some of the best around). Ebay prices on crescent fillers are very reasonable right now, especially the BCHR models with #2 or #3 size nibs. These are designated by model numbers like 2NL, 3NL, 20, 30, 25p, etc. Crescent fillers were also made in larger sizes, with #4-#8 nibs, but these are less common and more expensive. You should be able to find a clean 2 or 3 size with good color for $50-100, You can pick one up for even less if you are willing to put in a sac (very easy) and will settle for worn chasing and less than perfect black color. Neither of these conditions effect writing ability, but certainly make the pens sell for less. If, rather than a writer, you want a prime specimen for a collection, go for a larger size with excellent+ color and near-mint condition, and expect to pay more, natch. Contact me back channel if you have questions -happy hunting! Dave Glass |
| Platinum Armor
|
| |
6/4/2002: Richard Jarvis |
|
Kevin,
The Armor is not a heavy pen for its construction, but it is heavier than a similar pen in acrylic. The Aurora Ipsilon is a good pen with a gold nib that beats the $120 price point you describe. I also think we could beat that price on the Armor as well if you like. The pen might be heavier than you want, but it is not a heavy pen in absolute terms.

I wanted to swap the medium nib on
my Montegrappa symphony for a fine,
so I called Cartier, who is now handling
American Montegrappa issues. I talked
with Lydia and Diane, both of whom
were quite friendly and helpful. (It
probably helped that I didn't lunge
into a tantrum about the delay.) I
was told that they are having some
difficulty getting supplies from
the "mother ship" in Italy, and asked
my patience--could be months. They
said that this was not due to any
intransigence by Montegrappa, but
was because of transit issues that
are totally out of their hands. (Don't
even know that bribes would help,
these days.) They indicated that they
are trying to get a substantial supply
of the most commonly needed parts, like
nibs for swaps and replacements so that
they are not as vulnerable to shipping
problems. They also said that they are
working on getting out the new information
(since taking over Montegrappa handling from
Reminiscences). Their contact number
is 1-888-537-6878. I said that there are
many pen entusiastists here who carefully watch
when others of "the family" share their customer
service joys and horror stories and they said that
I may post all this information here, so that all
will know. |

Maybe if Dustin Hoffman had had a nice fountan pen he wouldn't have gotten tangled up with Mrs. Robinson ... or he could have at written her a nice thank-you note ...
Oh well, graduation time is here and we have a little special at Penspiration:
Graduation gift package: Margaret Shepherd's wonderful book, "The Art of the Handwritten Note: A Guide to Reclaiming Civilized Communication" could make a wonderful difference in the life of any grad who wants to succeed and stand out in the world. She advocates using fountain pens to write notes, so we have a few package deals available. Send me an e-mail for the following specials and I'll send you a PayPal invoice.
Book and Ipsilon Deluxe $87 (list price would be $111)
Book and Pelikan M150 $46 (list price would be $61). Choice of medium and broad nibs only.
Book and Pelikan Pharo $36.95 (list price would be $45) Medium nib only
Make your own deal: Send e-mail to ask for specific package deals on pens we carry.

| Web site hosting problems and the London Pen Show
|
| |
6/1/2002: Simon Gray |
|
I'm afraid that we are experiencing a few problems as we change the hosting service for our website. If anyone wants to visit the Battersea Pen Home site, the URL www.penhome.co.uk is functioning okay.
The URL www.penhome.com is not working at all at present and probably won't work until the middle of next week as we have two public holidays on Monday and Tuesday for the Queen's jubilee.
Email is also adrift. Pleae use info@penhome.co.uk if you need to email us.
Despite these technical problems, we have posted new information on our home page about the 2002 London Pen Show. In particular, we are happy to announce that Alexander Crum Ewing (formerly of Bonhams) has a new central London auction base and will be running the London Pen Show auction on Friday 4th October which is expected to have around 1000 lots of pens and pencils.
Many thanks
Simon Gray

| It's time for a change of life!

To those who know me as little more than a name, allow me to introduce myself a little more. I repair and restore vintage pens, and I sell a few pens as well, mostly vintage but with a few affordable modern pens whose nibs I've reground to make them more interesting. I also have opinions on practically everything. I'm currently 55 and soon to be "retired" from the corporate world; my "day" job is in the Tru64 UNIX group at what is now The New HP. (Early retirement is the alternative to a highly probable layoff as HP runs a Lawn Boy through the place.) As a new old folk, I'm looking forward to having lots more time on my hands; I hope to fill part of it with consulting work so that I can eat, but I'll definitely have more time to work on pens! :-) I also, together with my son-in-law Don Fluckinger, publish a free email newsletter once a month, with a couple of articles we think are interesting and a listing of recent for-sale additions to the pages on my Web site - http://www.virtualcrate.com/pens/ -- Anybody have any favorite places to find pens (even parts pens) in the Winston-Salem and Louisville areas? Oh, and Buffalo. I'll be making a circle, my last vacation as a corporate nebbish, in about two weeks; but I won't have time to do fleas. |

If you have a user grade 51 with a busted nib - and the nib is gold - I'll exchange it free for a perfect octanium nib (market value for these seems to float at $10 to $15 retail here on PL), installed and adjusted. That way you have a nice user and I get another 51 nib to experiment with. ;-) Some of you have already taken advantage of this service and were pleased, so I decided it was time to make it more known.
-------
Also offering above gold market rates or $3 per nib for ANY gold nib missing iridium you might have in your scrap box (whichever is higher for you) - or will trade nib retipping in exchange for busted nibs with a 2 week turn or I'll pay YOU $5 per nib extra for each week beyond that point up to 3 weeks. You can also buy anything on my pages using busted gold nibs as currency instead of dollars - or things offline as well (ask).
----
Best to all,

Firstly a very happy birthday Dean. You have given this writer and all the other penlover/stylophile readers and contributors much pleasure and PENlucidation. I always check into penlovers whenever I do my mail. Become like a second home ;-)
It is a bummer to put it mildly losing all your data. Crash or virus? I suppose no back up. Vitally important btw, something a lot of us neglect and one day, Kabob, it's all gone :-(( In any event what's done is done, and no use crying over spilt milk crashed comp. May your new year (till 120 but feel like 20 according to that old Jewish blessing) be one of health, happiness, peace and contentment. Money in the bank certainly helps too ;-) You have many PENfriends and we all join hands in wishing you a good one!

| Parker "51" Beechcraft planes are SOLD OUT
|
| |
5/31/2002: Len Provisor |
|
I made exactly 107 of the Parker "51 Beechcraft models, which is my favorite Parker aircraft not only because of it's good looks, but also it's rich aviation history and it's relation with Kenneth Parker. This was the aircraft that inspired Kenneth Parker for the design of the "51" Flighter in steel and gold trim. If anyone still wants one of these models, a few may be available from various dealers that placed quantity orders with me. Let me know and I will refer you to those dealers. Some of these dealers also have the first model I made, the 1928 Fairchild FC2W2 "Duofold", the famous big red one which was Parker Pen Company's first corporate aircraft. One of these dealers has a very "rare" model of the FC2 "Duofold" that was special ordered in all Mandarin, with exact same decoration. Mandarin planes never existed, but it is very cool looking. These original models can be seen on my website www.inkblotters.com My next models are late coming in, but very soon I will introduce the 1954 and the 1960 Parker DC-3 models, each having a great "51" and a "61" decoration. Images will be up soon on my website. Same price as all previous models. Visit www.inkblotters.com for images of actual aircraft and replica models. |
| Happy Birthday Dean

| The most exquisite writing accessory
|
| |
5/31/2002: Andreas Lambrou |
|
Dear Colleagues,
We acquired a few pieces of the Sheaffer Nostalgia Sterling Silver Rocker Ink Blotters -- Sheaffer's remaining stock.
It is simply exquisite. Mint, in the original red and gray Sheaffer gift box. The sterling silver base measures 108 mm x 48 mm x 5 mm. It has a beautiful 1920s Art Deco design crafted out of .925 hall marked sterling silver.
The moment we took a couple out of their packaging, both Mary and I decided to keep one each for ourselves! This piece will enhance any writing desk, at home or in the office, whatever fountain pen you use, a Montblanc, a Pelikan, an Aurora, a Parker and so on. And especially a Sheaffer.
There are further details and an image of the blotter in our Internet store in our 'Steal of a Deal' department.
http://stores.andale.com/ClassicPens
These pieces are long discontinued and extremely difficult to source. They were the 'creme de la creme' in the Sheaffer's range, in my view in any Company's range.
Retail was $600, our Steal of a Deal offer is a mere $200 plus S&H -- offering over 66% discount!
Please visit our store or contact us back channel for further details.
This offer is available until stocks last.
Thank you for your time, we look forward to being of service to you.
Regards,
Andy Lambrou Tel: 1-323-658-7367

| Bulletin Board Crash
|
| |
5/31/2002: Dean |
|
Well well well, Happy Birthday to me. Yep you guessed it for the first time in over two years the bulletin board had a complete meltdown and crashed. Of course we lost everything on the board and it is not recoverable. And yes this also happened just as I was getting ready to go out and celebrate my B-day. How nice, so we start again and see where it takes us. I have been working on a new board that has many more and nice features and will let everyone give it a try as it comes closer to being finished. But for now we will see if this jump-start gets the board going again. Also June’s Stylophiles is just about finished and should be online late tomorrow. Happy Collecting, Dean |
