| Parker 75 - Information Please
|
| |

|
I am looking for information on an unusual Made in U.S.A. Parker 75 - (unique?). It may have been a prototype and or very limited production item. I have not personally ever seen or heard of a pen like this and have not been able to identify it using any reference material or site. The metal content of the cap and barrel is as follows: Cu=65%; -Copper: Ni=18%; - Nickel: and Zn=17%. – Zinc. This alloy is called “Nickel Silver 65-18” and is further categorized as UNS C75200. The pen is a bit lighter than a sterling model (early or later) and the metal does somewhat resemble the older Nickel coin which was 75% copper and 25% Nickel. Detailed pictures are available on my server – will send the addresses upon request. Any information on the specific production of this pen would be very much appreciated…..thanks, RP. |

Yes, yes, yes, and yes. Light will
fade plastic pens and cause rubber
pens to turn brown/green. Sulfur
emission from sacs cause darkening.
Sulfur emits also from hard-rubber
inner caps of plastic pens and
causes caps to darken. Your best
bet is to keep your Jade in a cool
dark (but preferably not air-tight)
place, away from sources of sulfur
emissions such as other pens
especially hard-rubber ones. Take
out the sac to keep the body from
darkening, and remove the cap to
allow air flow around the inner
cap which is rubber. Some may say
this is overkill but you are
almost guaranteed your pen will not
change color if you follow these
instructions. If you want to use
the pen, so so but make sure the
sac is a couple of years old so all
the sulfur gas has left the rubber,
and use only inks known not to
stain, typically Sheaffer Skrip
Washable Blue and Parker Quink
Washable Blue. WJD |

What causes vintage pens to become discolored? Is it light, oils from your hand, the sac material, chemical breakdown with age, ink???I have a pristine Sheaffer Jade Flat top and want to keep it that way. |

Best thing to do would be to contact
Waterman directly. Your instruction
manual should have the phone number.
Many online pen sites will have the
numbers(s) of the various manufacturers' repair depots as well.
They may ask you to send the pen to
them, or they may just send you the
part you need. When you finally get the new part, coat the threads with a tiny amount of orange shellac and that will keep the part in place for good. WJD |

Hello, I do not collect pens, I write with them. I was given a new Waterman for Christmas 2000. The non-business end of the barrel has a little screwed on cap, finishing the end and retaining a gold decorative band. This female threaded cap is lost, and I would like to replace it. Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance, Steve Riffle |

| Parker 61-How to charge with Ink

You will need to force water or a 50/50 solution of water/409 cleaner (or similar) through the pen until it runs with NO ink color. I use a rubber ear bulb and fill it with very warm water or the cleaning solution. Also, I leave a newly acquired 61 pen soaking for at least over night first in the middle of the cleaning process. After it runs clear, force all the water out. The best way is to wad up paper towels over the end and sling it downward with your arm. FYI, Parker used a centrifuge to get the water or ink out of them. To refill, just dip the end of the filling unit in ink and it will draw the ink into the capillary filler. When I fill one, I usually dip, clean it off, then blow (by mouth) through the capillary filling end into a paper towel until ink comes out the nib. I then re-immerse the pen in ink again to fill the remainder of the filler. You should clean it out completely with water before storing it. |

I use wax crayons to fill the barrel rings on the Conklin Endura. The ones I use are an industrial grade used by the Council Parking Police here to mark car tyres. Conveniently, the manufacturer I scrounged them from had both red and yellow available. Childrens crayons would probably work just as well. |
| re: Edson Vs. Legacy?
|
| |
7/29/2002: Waco Johnny D |
|
If forced to choose between the two,
I'd choose the Sheaffer. The QC
problems plaguing the Balance II
family appear to have left the
Legacy II unmolested. The Edson
is WAY overpriced for what it is
(well actually so are most new
pens but this is an extreme case).
What you get is a not-too-smooth
nib and gold plating that wears off
quickly. Also the Edson starts
extremely slowly and reluctantly
when filled after being stored dry,
which may or may not concern you.
Once it's running it runs okay but
perhaps a little on the lean side.
I am a fan of neither pen but I'd
consider the Sheaffer marginally-superior.
You'll get more satisfaction from
either pen if you send it off to
Dick Binder (richardspens.com) for
proper nib shaping and smoothing
after you receive it) since neither
pen is anything to write home about
WRT nib perparation. Now, all that
being said, another alternative
would be to buy an (old) Sheaffer
PFM, the "real thing." There are
plenty available at reasonable
prices and they will hold their
value over the years. WJD |

My 500-pen cabinet was sold last week. I just received a quite nice "thanks" from zoss-list member Denis Deutsch, who didn't mind my quoting him..........................................................................................."David - the pen case arrived this evening and it is GREAT! The pictures
and description simply did not do it justice. The oak and workmanship is as
beautiful as almost any piece of furniture I've seen. While it holds almost
600 pens, it is small enough that it functions as an end table in our living
room as well. Thanks much!
Denis Deutsch"................................................................... I do hope to continue giving fair descriptions for items for sale. Soon i will be posting ads for slightly used *Reed& Barton* 66-pen case (?Mahogany) and a *Woodbin*/Martin Smith solid Cherry 52-pen. At that point i'll have no more wood cases save for the one monster case- which is, i guess, the idea :-) Regards. David |

Hi. I thought I would ask for some expert opinions on my next pen purchase. I have always wanted an Edson, dream of them no doubt, and was about to buy one until I noticed some great buys on the Sheaffer Legacy II. The nibs and general shape of the pens look, from a distance, similar. Is the Edson really worth the +/- $300? If so, why? |

Hello all... It's been great talking to
so many of you recently. I do trust that
all who have requested one, have received
the new Sailor Fine Writing Catalog...?
GOOD! Please let me know if I missed you.
Just a reminder to all; Mr. Nagahara and
we at Sailor are very excited as we grow
closer to the DC pen show dates!! I
wanted to confirm another opportunity to
meet Nagahara for everyone; he will be
performing a pen clinic at Bertram's
Ink Well at the White Flint Store in
Kensington, MD. 11301 Rockville Pike
on Thursday August 8th from 12pm-8pm.
He is absolutely beside himself to be
in our nations capital! We urge anyone
interested to come by. Bertram's has
been most gracious and would be very happy
for anyone to come by. Also, we're doing
all that we can to accommodate as many
as possible that plan to visit Mr. Nagahara
at the show. From your many emails and calls
it may become crowded so keep this in mind while
planning your visit. I look forward to meeting
everyone!! Please come by at the show or at
Bertram's, I'd love to put names with faces and
voices. We're all very excited for the opportunity.
See you there!!! Rob |

Hello all;;
I have a set of Parker 61 gold filled for sell. This is in very good condition. The set is 25 years old. The fountain pen has Original capillary filler convertor to fill the ink. The nib (point) write excellent. The cap and barrel of pen/pencil are gold filled and embosed on the bottom of cap (Parker 61 gold filled USA)No personal engraving or removed engraving. The set has a gray colour Double jewel tassies , look like mother of pearl but I am not sure.
Fountain pen does not have any dent or any kind of mark but pencil has two tiny dent, not a big deal. The pencil takes lead 0.7mm and a twist mechanism. the mechanism work perfectly. This is a used set with no box or case, no papers. I will sell it for $110.00 with no shipping cost to you. Thanks |

| NOS Pelikans, Watermans, Montblanc and Vintage Stuff 4 Sale
|
| |
7/28/2002: Jon Rosenbaum |
|
NEW OLS STOCK STUFF: Found a couple of odd Pelikans amongst the stuff I have been selling from the closed stationary/pen store. A M200 (fine nib) and D200 ballpoint (clicker actuated) in Blue. This is a set in the older clamshell plastic box, complete with papers. The pen apparently was dipped but there is no evidence that it was ever filled. The BP is pristine: $65 takes the set. A NOS R800 in Black--a perfect mate to your M800 or M1000. This is the OLD STYLE with the GF insert on the top of the cap and a GF button insert on the barrel bottom, much much nicer than the newer version. I think Pely roller refills are the best! A very elegant roller in pristine, perfect condition with clamshell box and papers: $80 takes it. Still have following Pelikan 600's: one Black X/F nib $115, one Burgundy B $130, one Burgundy F $125. Montblanc 144 M complete in "Art of Writing" box with papers--if you like MB, this is a great one. $105 takes it. Waterman Patrician Cardinal Red BALLPOINT. This is an incredible pen! (One was just grabbed using BIN on ebay at $82.50 plus insurance, postage, etc.) You can have this one, compete with gorgeous box and all papers for $79. VINTAGE: Two Patker 51 Vac fillers. Both in dove grey with excellent plus barrels and hoods--no scratches dings or cracks, no personalization, etc. One has Blue Daimond GF cap with four lines & space pattern, three very small dings in cap, fine/xf nib in working condition. No brassing. The other has a frosty lusterloy cap with one very small micro ding. This is a 1948 transition pen without blue diamond clip. Will need a new diaphram. medium nib. Take 'em both for $55. Early Black Vacumatic set (three ring) double jewel standard size. This set has not been restored, but is in very nice shape with no brassing except high point ridge on the barrel tassie of the pen--hardly noticable even under magnification. Pen has excellent imprint, date code of "27", medium fine single tone nib--very smooth. No significant scratches, etc. A gentle polish and a new diaphram will bring this baby back to life. The matching pencil's date code is "45", it shows a tiny amount of brassing on one of the cap rings. Full working condition. This is a really nice early set. much more impressive than the latter single jewel vacs of the 40's. Its yours for $79. NOTE: ALL OF THE ABOVE INCLUDE DOMESTIC USA POSTAGE. Insurance is extra. $50-100 $2.20, $101-200 $3.20, $201-300 $4.20, etc. First confirming email gets 'em. Thanks! Jon R |

Yes, it's probably an Expert I.
Colors were solid (maroon,
black, hunter green, navy, maybe
others), nibs had a
cutout over the feed (can't recall
whether this was a locking tab,
too lazy to go into the gun safe
to check one of mine). The I was
a little lighter than the II.
Both were/are good reliable writers.
My only complaint is the clips
appear to me made of (cheap) pot
metal; if you accidentally bend it
outwards an inch or so, such as when you
get it caught on something, well,
good luck bending it back
w/o breaking it. I have 3 Is and
1 II, no complaints about any
save for the clip mishap which
was my fault (now I take cheap pens
with me when I work around horses).

| re: Button, lever or converter
|
| |
7/28/2002: Waco Johnny D |
|
I'd say cartridge/converter wins
that one, especially since your
question WRT how the various
systems work indicates you do not
do your own maintenance. With a C/C
pen the worst that can happen is
the converter might get loose and
have to be replaced ($5, big deal).
Every sac-based pen will fail
eventually and need to have the
sac replaced; if you don't do the
work yourself this will cost you
the price of 5-8 converters
depending on who you go to. For an
answer to the question about
filling systems, go to
Dick Binder's site
(richardspens.com), to the
reference section, to the link for
the filling systems. For someone
who fixes his own pens the choice
of filling system WRT long-term
reliability is meaningless since a
sac swap is a 5-minute affair at
most. WJD |

Can someone tell me which of the filling mechanisms is the most sturdy when one has to rinse out the pen often. Is it the button filler, the lever filler or the ordinary converter? I just bought a French Waterman Fountain Pen That I assumed was an Expert. The nib, although original, looks different to the Expert 11 pens I have seen. Also, the top of the cap is not two coloured just black and it is solid blue not the French Blue that is advertized. Was there an Expert 1 or a forerunner to the Expert 11. Waterman Service in Janesville deserves a big pat on the back for some recent service they provided me. I sent them a Waterman Le mans pencil that needed a replacement lead advance mechanism. The pencil was atleast 15 years old. Not only did they replace the mechanism and the barrel, but the engraving of my name on the cap had lost its gold fill over time, so they filled it. The cost: ZERO DOLLARS!!
New mechanism, new barrel, new engraving gold fill - all at no cost. Now that's customer service!

Greetings. Been packing for the "final move" to NY city during last couple days. Been behind on email. Anyway, after all the interesting chat about pen cases, the darn 500-pen Cabinet i listed here a couple-three days back did sell within 24 hours and should be at the new owner's home today courtesy of UPS ground shipping to Ohio. Some followup. I had advertised it as Oak, as i purchased it as oak (ironically enough, in Ohio and as noted below, probably with Joe Nameczyk nearby. And, it certainly, at worst, would have been as much "OAk" as most of the stuff i see at the Oak & Brass stores- meaning i was not sure about the inner wood, though i knew the outer wood was not laminated. When i arrived in Rochester (i'd advertised the sale from NYCity before heading out) i examined the case. Sure enough, every drawer runner, all the facing materials, even the support struts buried out of sight, are all solid oak. It is a great cabinet in any case, and now it has a new home. I still hope to hear about the far less expensive cases cited by one writer, which cost a mere fraction of the price i'd quoted for my cabinet. But i guess that is not meant to be. I do hope to continue posting the occasional pen sale at prices guaranteed to be either way too high, just right, or way to low :-) Best regards. David |

Hello all!
The two new Private Reserve colors, Black Cherry and Sonic Blue arrived this week, and all of the pre-orders have shipped out. Although the new price for all of the PR inks is now $7.60, I'm continuing to sell from current stock (including the new colors) at $7.00.
Now that I have the ink in hand to compare, I'd describe the Sonic Blue as a blue/black with a lighter blue component than that of Midnight Blues, whereas the Hero/Doctor blue/black (also on sale, at $4.00) tending much
more toward the black end.
Having always been partial to brown/sepia inks, I'm very impressed by the Black Cherry, which along with the Tanzanite and Plum, has quickly become one of my personal favorites among the Private Reserve inks. Although Copper Burst is more of a true brown, the Black Cherry has a much warmer feel to it, with its rich, red undertones. I predict that it will quickly become one of the best-sellers.

As they always seem to become hidden, due to the fact that they are several layers removed from the homepage of His Nibs, I want to once again highlight the hand-painted Hero '343' series of hooded-nib pens, which quickly become
favorites of those who purchase them:

i think a good bit of the hype surrounding

be good investments, or at any rate, will
begin to be perceived as good investments,
if they were made to star in movies.
however, even for an imaginative CGI

Thanks Bill. I thought it looked like a Cassiopea clip but couldn't find a color match on Ray Adam's web site. I wasn't looking closely enough; it's the "dark green veined" one. Unfortunately that makes at least 3 Cassiopeas I'd like to buy. |

Several years ago at a pen show auction, I don't remember the carpet pattern or color so I can't recall which show it was, Chicago or DC, maybe Ohio or LA...sumgai newbie antique dealer brings in an original LE Waterman office wall unit storage cabinet with a zillion drawers, guaranteed authentic, about 10 feet wide about 7 feet high weight of maybe a ton and had visions of thousands of dollars in his pocket at the end of the day. End of auction...not a single bid.
Great piece of historical artifact from Waterman but literally impossible to ship..or even get in the door. |

Hi Folks and Dave and Sally:
I was at the pen show when the builder of this 'very' nice case was showing it. I seriously thought of buying it. The material is solid wood. I have seen another example of this craftmans work. He has built custom inserts in desk drawers for writting instruments. The 'boss man' is highly respected in our community.

Perhaps our friend Dov from Israel will see this and comment also to verify my information.
I believe Katab pens were produced in Palestine starting in the late 1930. The company was set up by immigrants from European countries that were employed at pen factories. Katab was an inexpensive pen but well made, and are a popular collectible in Israel. |

There are two green ones in the Venlo ad.... My Nettuno Superba, a birthday gift from a couple years ago, and a gorgeous pen, I highly reccommend one if you can find it! The other is a Cesare Emiliano Cassiopea, another great pen, and much more affordable than a Superba! The Cassiopea is to the rear of the case, the Nettuno towards the front. |

Parker Duofold International-Pearl Grey with Black wavy lines--- This is the shorter model. It measures 5 1/8th" with the cap on. The nib says 18K and the number 750 is stamped on the right side at the base of the nib. Stamped on the bottom of the feed, in a circular depression ia the letter M.
It'a neat looking pen. Price is $175.00 with a converter. No box or papers. I'm looking for a "Sheaffer Clip" Sheaffer with a #8 nib, or a large "Sheaffer clip" pen

hi george and len and paula, et al. Yes, i quite agree that a semi-skilled craftsdude can outfit one of several sorts of cases to hold pens. Several plans have been posted over the years- including a neat pen coffee table with glass top. Part of the trick of course is how many human-hours of labor to devote to outfitting it. There is something to be said for convenience of getting something already done and working. But of course that is a personal call. Len's case sounds great, and of course i am a great proponent of Gary Lehrer's slotter tray/boxes, but i would point out that Gary's liners alone do retail around $3 per 10 pens stored, or about $750 for just the liners for Len's monster case. And to add to Paula's post, i would note that having seen and held the VENLO cases, they are truly spectacular, but do tend to run more than $1.60 per pen slot :-) regards david

| Storing Pens
|
| |
7/24/2002: Allan |
|
I would think that a safe would be the ideal place to store a large number of pens. If someone breaks in to your abode, it would be very easy to put all the pens in a pillow case or wrap them up in a sheet and there goes your pen collection.
It's easy to make trays that fit into a safe, or you couldbuy trays for the shelves. |
| pen cases

Leaving aside all the pointless vitriol, keep in mind that all sorts of furniture can be converted into pen cases. One might use the pre-made grooved inserts, cut to shape, or as one poster noted, fine results may be had using strips of thin wood from the hobby store, glued down and then covered with fabric. I believe there was a recent thread on Pentrace regarding inexpensive solid wood tool chests available at Sam's Club (perhaps it was another discount outlet, however), quite capacious and only $70 or so. And as Dr I has pointed out, the best solution for storing large numbers of pens is an antique wooden cabinet properly fitted out. |

Who would be able to help me get my father's Parker Vacumatic converted to use modern ink cartridges? I would like to be able to use it, and filling from a bottle is just too much fuss. It is a nice big pen, so I'm sure there will be room for the cartridge attachment. |

Nice case David, it looks very well made and I especially like what's init.
My pen display case is also solid white oak, antiqued and has a tilt up top so I can take out trays and ogle the contents. It actually is an artwork flat file that holds my vintage map and parchments collection. Using the pen box liners from Gary Lehrer's at only $5. each (including the box for transport) my case can hold about 2500 pens in 20 drawers each about one-inch height. I don't have 2500 pens, and may never have more than a few hundred perfect ones , but it's a beautiful companion for my pens, vintage pen ads, maps and documents. BTW, this thing weights about a ton and could not move even if I tried. The top is loaded with my desk bases and other accessories that tell my visitors "This guy is really nuts!" |

Poor sally. She doesn't know me well enough to know i'll happily argue with anyone about anything. I revel in that. Enjoy debate with those who have points to make. Just ask everyone. Have thanked folks who present meaningful and contrary info. You failed, though. In classic wussy "can't win a real argument" mode, you retreat into typical pseudo-psycholorgical sophistry. "Tsk Tsk, hit a nerve", does not compensate for failed argument. But it is entertaining. Don't delude yourself, though. Your phrasing merely makes your failure glare.. You contribute nothing. Your failure to address my utter destruction of your position speaks for itself. You fail to cite your imagined source of "less expensive" pen cases. You fail to address that for most pen cases the bulk of cost is in constructing individual liners, not in making the outer box. You Fail to cite why my pen case should be even a trifle less expensive, since most pen cases that hold 1/5 the pens cost as much. You fail to offer readers a better alternative for storage. In the context that no known oak pen case is this cheap-per-pen, you arument again fails, and your objections are silly. You hit no nerve my dear. I happily observe that despite your objections that the pen case mite not be perfect in some bizarre fashion, the case represents one of the best dollar values available. You have offered nothing contrary but nebulous whining. The couple folks interested might or might not buy the case. I routinely offer items for sale. Some don't sell first round. that is fine. But if you wish to object, then please show me some useful info. Otherwise you simply are a troll, though i respect your right to be one. Show me a lined pen case holding this many pens for even 50% MORE than this one. Show me your imaginary coin cases, lined with pen trays for the money you quote. I appreciate that you are bringing more publicity to my unique sale item, though. thanks much. David |

Tsk,tsk, poor old David I. seems to have lost it. Besides your case being a trifle expensive your anger could do with some management. Just because you overpaid for some tatty homemade cabinet there is no need to expect anyone else to do so. Leave it to the ignorant to critique what they have never seen and have never examined. Trifle expensive? Yah, sure. Better to buy the Farney 100 pen case for $700- much better deal, righ?. That one is far fancier of course and is very lovely and i am *NOT* knocking it, but this one holds 5x the number of pens for same ballpark price. I'll tell you what, "sally". Why don't you post a link to where i can get a similar 500 pen case for your farcical ballpark of $250 and i'll go order four of them myself. Make sure you post it to this list. I'd like to see you back up your crochity BS with some actual help to listmembers. If your coin collector cabinet builder can adapt it to pens for even $100 more I will order four of them.. Unlike *you*, i know the source for this case, and know the big retail pen store that happily bought the only other one available during the past three years. Since i can (without drawers) lift the antique solid wood Hamilton printer cabinet that can house 2000 pens and is four times the size of the case for sale (lift it with drawers out of course), that the case for sale can be lifted is no great surprise. Perhaps you are weak, in addition to being a bufoon. Ya know sally, i've never seen your name on this list before. I might have missed it of course. Have you ever contributed *anything* to the penchat here, other than to speak in ignorance. kindest regards. David |

Excuse me but if the observation "...Heavy? Surprisingly enough, not that heavy. I have picked it up, loaded, for short walks." (is that with or without a leash ?)is true, then surely the case is constructed of chip board with veneer and not solid natural wood which would make a price of around $800 seem a trifle expensive. You can pick up a decent coin collectors cabinet made from solid walnut for about $250. |

good questions. To clarify......... The pen case was moved to that part of carpet for photo (i didn't get around to correcting the image with photoshop or there would be no stains), so whether or not the case leaks is a separate issue. But, to answer that question, no the case does not leak. The case owner is responsible for that one. The case is a modern case, not antique, so lighting and wood variation accounts for drawer variation. Nothing has been replaced in the case. Heavy? Surprisingly enough, not that heavy. I have picked it up, loaded, for short walks. With drawers removed, it is easy to juggle. Trading a toyata. Well for a 99 landcruiser i suppose....

| ultimate pen case FS. Holds 500+ pens. Oak. $815
|

7/23/2002: david isaacson |

Hello.
With much regret, i am offering for sale a rather.... unusual.... pencase. PICS ARE ENCLOSED BELOW
Case is made of Oak.
Holds 500+ pens, in trays 25 slots wide, by 2 rows deep, with 10 narrow drawers, all taking up a footprint about the size of a two-big-drawer letter-size file cabinet. It is perfect size for an end-table to bed or couch.
Please see below for info on pen storage. Price of this cabinet is $815, including shipping.
It can hold more than 500 pens as there is usually room between the pens and the front/back of case to squeeze a couple extra pens.
Pen storage of course is a tricky business. From the most basic pen boxes to the fanciest calf-skin cases etc, prices seen to range from about 50 ¢ per pen slot on up to about $30 per pen. This furniture-finish piece prices out, i guess, around $1.60 per item.
I bought this case after following the typical painful path of starting with a 10-pen case, then a 66 pen case, then a couple of them, then those plus a bunch of traveling attaches, etc.
If you have a collection greater than 100 pens, and anticipate that collection growing, do consider investing in a case that will house the expanding collection for many years to come, and does so in a stylish manner.
Two pics included below. The first is HUGE, will take some time to load and will need scrolling to see whole thing

Hi Everyone,
I'm in seach of a nib and feed for a Waterman's "Red" nib, for a Waterman's #7 red ripple with a red band. The nib would be imprinted RED on the nib itself. The feed would be red and black mottled. I have for trade either a Waterman's "Hundred Year" nib standard size or a standard size "Emblem" nib. Both are flexy, and have medium width tips, i.e. .025 - .033 Please e-mail me backchannel if you have the parts I need and are interested in either of my parts. I can send you the diameter of the feed where it friction fits into the barrel and the O.D. of the actual barrels, if you are not sure what size pen you have.
Happy Ink Trailz!

Colleagues, this is a big stab in the dark, but I might as well try.
I am looking for a Sailor 80th Anniversary limited edition set that came as a fountain pen and matching ballpen. Available around 10 years ago. I think it came as dark or light briarwood. If anyone has one they care to part with (gently used is just fine) and would like to sell, I would be eternally grateful.

One STUB @$80, one DOUBLE BROAD (looks like a wide stub!) @$80, and one extra fine (looks more like fine to me and is very, very smooth!) @$75. These pens are brand new in their orginal boxes and outer slip cases, they are equiped with 14k white gold nibs. Unfortunately, there are no instructions for these man-sized twist piston fillers, why I don't know. Price includes USA domestic postage, insurance is $2.20 extra. Greetings Stylophiles!
Have been off line for a little bit and couldn't help but reading all the nonsense about Mr. Goodwin and his tragic loss!(?) Battersea Pen Home has an impeccable reputation and you know what, all's fair in love and auctions. The World would not be complete without someone complaining about something!
Back to pens now: I have a giant A.A. Waterman hard rubber (burnt orange) fountain pen with a #12 American Ftn. Pen nib and the "Not Connected With L.E. Waterman Co." imprint on the barrel. The cap is a slip-cap with no pocket clip. My question is: Has anybody ever seen another one of these and are there any original catalogs that show this pen (Patent date Aug. 31st 1915)?
Last Question: I have a Platinum Pen Co. 70th Anniversary Arabesque Filigree Ftn Pen in solid Platinum--it is marked "PT 950"--I have the Sterling and the 18KT versions and they are marked accordingly and were listed in the company info, but the Platinum version is nowhere to be found--even our domestic Platinum website has no info on the pen. Anybody out there have any info on this pen--somebody in Japan or the Famous Platinum Pen collector I've heard about in Korea?
This is what this bulletin board is all about--the exchange of info and ideas on pen collecting and related items--not a forum for complaining about e-Bay auctions. If there is a fraud stealing our hard-earned money on e-Bay, GREAT, let us know, but not if you lost a pen in an on-line auction!
Have fun with your pen collecting!!!
PEACE! DOCTOR NIB |

|
Hello all!
As most of you already know, Private Reserve has just released two new ink colors to their wonderful selection, Black Cherry and Sonic Blue. You may not be aware that they've also raised their retail price to $7.60. I will be keeping my price at $7.00 for the immediate future -- for the ink I have in stock, as well as for pre-orders of the two new colors (I expect my shipment to arrive this week), so please email me now if you'd like to reserve any of the 'Reserve' .
Although I've not yet seen the new colors myself yet (the folks at Private Reserve dropped the ball on notifying all dealers simultaneously of its shipping availability), Black Cherry has been described by others as a warm tone, somewhere between brown and burgundy, and the Sonic Blue as a blue-black with a bit of gray. Follow the link to take a look for yourselves:

Auction-wise, for eBay, please click on the following link and then type in
"palace" (without the quotes) in the Single Seller box to see what's closing

Ok, so you can sit in your underwear watching an auction on eBay...finger over a mouse ready to bid on a pen at 72 dpi, but nothing can replace being at a pen show. You can touch it, smell it, talk, learn, meet e-mail buddies, non-stop pen fun worth a heck of a lot more than winning a pen and not really knowing what you get.
For the time of your life, try to make one of the big FIVE shows : NY, LA, Chicago, DC, Ohio or maybe Philly, Boston, Miami, San Francisco, Atlanta, Michigan, Houston, or if you're in the neighborhood...Melbourne Australia or the JIPC - Jerusalem International Pen Show in 2004. |

sort of empathize with him. having watched
the auction over several days, and then being
sniped (by bidding software, perhaps)
has to feel awful. i too, had several such
experiences. initially, i thought the
snipers ungentlemanly, in not announcing
their "intentions" beforehand.
but ebay is a game with several variables
added to the usual live auction situation.
one of those variables is the great
freedom that comes with all things internet.
thus, one sees weird phenomena like shills,
trolls, deadbeats, snipes, etc. none of whom
would have a chance in a live, respectably
conducted auction. the rules are different,
and the game is different as well.
tried sniping a couple times myself: got the
rush, but felt miserably guilty later. after
a while, ebay got on my nerves, and now i loathe it. |

The inside scoop: The meeting was a great success, and we can expect the takeover to begin any day now. As far as we know, the only current hold up is in getting the black helicopters with the snowcap insignia into the country, they'll probably be smuggled in through Canada. Then there will be the shut down of the internet, using the Worldcom scandal as a pretext. Then, with those pesky internet only retailers out of the way, and the enforcement arm ready, the future of fine pen retail will be forever secured! |

Hey, does anyone know what went on at the secret Pen World Summit meeting sometime the last week or so in Houston? I heard that it happened and that no Internet dealers were invited but those that were there were being asked to form some sort of consortium of dealers and manufacturers. I wonder if this has anything to do with Parker trying to price fix the upcoming new 51 releases. I heard that they have threatened to cut off any dealer that sells the pen at a discount. I’m not sure if any of this is good for our hobby, but does anyone have the inside scoop. Jon |

I would suggest flushing the pen with ammonia. "Pure" ammonia (without detergent, or lemon scent, etc..), probably 50/50 with water.
If it's the bad Pelikan black, the problem is mold. I have seen reports of people who had their pen contaminated with this, only to have mold re-grow when the pen was refilled with another ink. The relatively concentrated ammonia rinse can sterilize the pen.
When I washed one of my problem pens out with water, I could see pieces of crud floating in the water. If you see this, its probably a good sign that you are having the same problem. I got a few reports of mold in the bottle bad enough to have a white layer growing on the top of the ink in the bottle, but I haven't seen anything like that. The very fact that its black ink makes it hard to see the contamination in the bottle.
As to not using "designer" ink... Pelikan black is a great ink - and will be again when this problem is fixed. Chartpak has said the problem is resolved and current production should be ok. Probably true, but I am going to wait awhile. But eventually it will be fine.
If you want a similarly warm toned, very black ink with good flow, try Aurora - a similar ink.

Again, thanks to everyone, and if you haven't visited or bought from us, check out the testimonials page. Already we have several repeat customers.

Donald's right, the Pelikan ink
has probably gummed up the works.
Flush the pen with half 409 cleaner
and half water until the contents
are almost clear, do NOT rinse the
pen afterwards, but immediately
fill with Parker Quink black or Sheaffer
black. Reliability/consistency of ANY pen can
be improved by avoiding ink
reputed to have QC problems and by
avoiding "designer" ink. WJD |

Pelikan black ink has been reported in long threads on Zoss and acpp to cause serious problems on occasions. Considering the many of reports on bad Pelikan black its reasonable to assume you may have got a bad bottle as well. Try another ink after a very complete flush of the pen. Some people have reported the ink was very hard to flush out and the pen continued to skip for quite a while after being filled with Pelikan. Hard to say how much of their ink is bad. One out of 100 bottles? More? Less? |

Have been using my new M800 only with black ink for a year now.
I recently noticed that ink was not flowing properly. Each time I need to unscrew to get some ink to write.
I cleaned all the parts several times. I was using Pelikan 4001 inks although my new test with Caran d'Ache did not work either.
Should we not expect the ink to flow without any unscrewing? Is my experience normal?
All comments will be appreciated. Thanks,

holy moly. James loses a pen auction on ebay the way everyone does- he bid too low and he bid early. He lost the way everyone loses when he loses on ebay- he lost to a bidder who bid a better price at a later time. The real-world rules of ebay were followed perfectly, and instead of viewing this as a chance to learn how to negotiate the maze that is ebay, he lets loose a vituperative tirade against one of pendom's best dealers, all because they actually played the ebay game as it is meant to be played. I must be missing something here. David |

The bidding debate has been done over and over, year after year. It is an oldie but a goodie. Every so long a bidder comes along upset because his "bargain" was either lost to a more serious bidder, or was driven up to more realist level by a late bidder. Usually this complaining occurs by kind and decent folks who have no insight as to how ebay works, who do not understand why sniping is the "generally" best strategy for anyone who wishes to bid on a pen, and that no one should ever ever enter a maximum bid that is more than he would be content to pay for the item. |

Sharon, simple task to clean nibs.
I'd suggest fill a cup with cool water with a few drops or 12 of a dishwasher, or 409, or 1 oz of ammonia or any good soapy solution.
Place pens in cup with exposed nibs down. Let soak overnight. Scrub with old toothbrush next day until clean. Hint, keep nibs and brush deep in sink to avoid spraying everything in sight. Let more stubborn caked ink soak another night. When clean, flush all the pens internally, same method as filling with ink with soapy solution to clean the innards.
Good luck, any questions ask the Board anytime. |

Mr Goodwhine is going to ignore remarks that get personal after the insults, name calling, and other remarks he made about a well respected and long time pen collector and dealer who did the same as the majority of ebay buyers did and won an auction fair and square. I've lost many ebay auctions in the last few seconds, and won many as well. I never got upset at the winner if I loose. I then blame myself for not bidding higher. So, General Goodwhine, I'd like to give you a well earned salute. With one finger. |

Sellers are sure to love the all-new GoodwinBay(TM) auction site!
Especially after their auctions close, and they are told, "sorry, we know X was the high bidder on your item, but you'll have to accept Jim's bid instead, because he was the high bidder for longer."
Or, ". . . you'll have to accept Jim's bid instead because he really, really, really wants to win, and X is some stupid foreigner anyway."
Or, ". . . you'll have to accept Jim's bid instead, because Jim is more sincere and X probably is just a shill who didn't intend to win, even though he's a professional auction buyer and his bid was twice as high as Jim's." |

7/18/2002: James Goodwin |

Ok guys, apart from ignoring your comments that get personal, I want to tell you that I understand how an auction works as I have played it for years. I was trying to draw a distinction. You would have an auction to clear out all the things in your home or factory, you hire auctioneer, advertise and prepare the site and allow people to check out the stuff before it begins. The auction starts and is over in a hour or so. You have a finite crowd limited to whoever comes in that day. It is there where you can find the bargains and get it for a good price On the other hand, EBAY is a continuous 7 to 10 day based auction with an infinite audience of people worldwide. Sometimes you will find bargains and sometimes you won't. The auction does not stop until the clock shuts off and it is like you had the auctioneer on duty the full 7 to 10 days! My point was that in both venues, you still run the risk of shills or not serious bidders. Retail selling - you have to be competitive and generate the cash to stay into business otherwise you will be in bankruptcy court and subject to an auction to dispose of your things for creditors. You can check both retail and auctions and select the best for your needs. Another point I brought up was the bidding strategy which generated personal comments on my character and sanity. My point was why bid high early and leave yourself the risk of others jumping in and jacking up their bids until they quit to leave you the winner. Bid accordingly and bid wisely. That can mean bidding at a time close to the end or when you sense that interest has been lost. It is a poker game and you call their bluff without getting bluffed or outsmarted or conned into overbidding. That is what I was saying. All that about realtors, car dealers and auction houses is true - they want to ensure that people are serious before they do business with you. Time wasted is time lost. That concludes my piece on the subject and may each of us go their separeate ways. |

Goodwin,
I don't know anything about you besides what you have written in your responses. From that I can't help but conclude that you don't understand and are incapable of comprehending the logistics and rules of an auction. Perhaps you are just plain stubborn and don't want to admit you're wrong. Either way I don't see a point in arguing with you anymore.

<< The thing is that we have not been able to devise an auction system that will reward the person who has the bid for the item the longest time while penalzing the one who just bids to jack up the ultimate price >>>
You've got to be kidding with that comment! You want preference because you were fool enough to waste your bidding energy on early stairstep bidding??!! In any auction (live, internet, or otherwise), as long as I pre-register, I can wait until right before the gavel and place whatever bid I want. If you REALLY want the item, you're going to have to pay more. Now wheter I'm a shill to raise the price or a legit buyer, that's for you to decide. It's like poker, unfortunately.
If you want everything on an even keel, you should buy from a retailer and pay retail. Otherwise, deal with the auction paradigm and its limitations.
And if you think that house sales, car sales, and the beyond-reproach, convicted of bid-rigging, Sothbys or Christies don't have shill and false bidding, you are really wet-behind-the-ears.
If you want something bad enough, pay for it. If you can't play the same snipe-bidding game, TOUGH.

Jason, let me finish this factual conversation. Before you can tour an exclusive house, you are prequalified by the realtor to see if you have the means to afford the house. Car dealers can quckly weed out the lookers from the pretenders by the skillful use of body language -that is why people like to shop for cars on Sunday. Sothbys requires bidders to preregister with a financial deposit to prove that they are serious bidders. Since Ebay is not Sothbys and accepts all comers, we run the risk of those less than serious jacking up the prices to close to what we are willing to pay and then stopping bidding. That happens and is a risk to those of us who play. People who want to get their price will set a reserve price, thus ensuring perpetual relisting of the item until they find a bidder willing to buy at the reserve price - they are protected from taking a loss. People who want to ensure that their items are sold will have a "Buy it now" feature and give the bidder the chance to buy now at a fair price to end the auction. Since I know my prices, I have found items at a fair price by exercising my buy it now option. The idea is to move the stuff you want to sell. It works either way - you will get your price with a crowd of bidders and maybe more or you will get a fraction of this if one bidder is the only one willing to bid. Finally, throughout this series of debates, I have stuck with the facts. Whiners do not have the facts to stick with and end up whining. |

I've auctioned a number of pens and other items on ebay and Love to watch the price of my item go up in the last seconds. It's quite fun and there's nothing wrong with it. It's the nature of auctions. If you don't like it don't participate. If you want to buy pens at riduclously low prices you need another method. Auctioned items will generally sell near an items actual value (What someone is willing to pay). If you wanted to only pay $10 than bid $10. If you bid $200 than you should be quite pleased that the item went for $177.50. You paid $22.50 less than what you were willing to. That should make you happy. Moral of the story. Just bid what you would be willing and happy to pay. If you bid more you're just plain stupid. It would also be pretty sad for a seller who's $177.50 item went for only $10. I'm sure you're hypothetical bidder of $175 would have been happy to pay $175 for the item if you only bid $172.50. Stop your whining. |

After reading your posts, I have decided to apologize for my choice of words used to describe Battersea Pen house. But my concerns about this incident are still there.
Soame of you have said, bid higher. Consider this - suppose you bid $200 on an article that is currently priced at $10. Seven days go by and it is still $10 until the last few minutes when a bidder bids up the price to say $175 and then quits, leaving me the victor at $177.50. (I want to pay $10, not $177.50!) That has me wondering about his sincerity to outbid me or just to jack up the price that I will have to ultimately pay. So, you must be cautious in placing a long term bid and bid accordingly to the situation.
Another thing, Ebay will deny it, but there are shills out there who jack up the prices that we will pay for the things we want. It is not just pen collectors and I am not accusing anyone in thei group. The thing is that we have not been able to devise an auction system that will reward the person who has the bid for the item the longest time while penalzing the one who just bids to jack up the ultimate price. If we had such a system, I am sure everybody would be happy.
Sniper system or just a person who stays up late in the night to make the last second bid - they earn that right if is is what they do.
Finally, I bid according to a value based system and never overbid or overpay for something. And I always pay when I win which is something some people do not do.
Based on a production run of 10,000 units, there must be between 8 and 9,000 units gathering dust in peoples places. One day, I will get one when it comes to me at a good price.
I may be sorry for my choice of words, but I am not sorry for possessing a very sharp focus on the issues of life that matter most to me other than pen collecting. Winners do not feel sorry for wanting to win. That is me and will always be so. No hard feelings toward Battersea pen. |

If anyhone is a SOB its James Goodwin and I suspect this idiot and his shamfull crybaby post proves it to everyone. He was fairly and simply out bid and that is only his own fault for not bidding high enough. I would never sell a pen nor deal with Mr. Goodwin based on his silly post. Millions of people bid in the last seconds at auctions. On ebay its a sport and losing in a sport is part of the game. There are also several companies that automate the last second bidding process and its perfectly fair to use them if one wants. So its very possible no one stayed up to bid other than a compiuter. Although there is nothing wrong with staying up. Mr. Goodwin has provided the best laugh I've seen on this site for some time and it does show how wacked out some poele can be when they don't get their way. Its one thing to be upset about losing an auction. Thats human nature even though a semi-sane person would blame themselves and get on with life. Its another to post about it and call the winner names. Mr. Goodwin needs the help of a good physc doctor I suspect, and if he posts many thigs like that, he may soon need a good lawyer as well. |

Whoa, pardner! This here's a family website. Reckon myself that it wasn't the Brit who had the h***-on for the pen, if you know what I mean.
Anyway, thanks for a laugh. When I read "it meant a lot to me to own something at a reasonable price only to have it stolen at the very last second" I can't help but see it as "I really wanted to get it cheap cuz I'm not about to pay what it's worth, and now I'm blaming the Limey cuz he was willing to pay a fair price". Maybe y'all should contact the seller and see if he feels the same way about it all.
P.S. If yer really short of scratch and y'all are really in Philly, why not get a piece of Independence Hall and put it in a pen yourself? Reckon its a big ol' thing, they wouldn't mind if you carved a sliver or two off it. And y'all could always explain how important it is to you, I'm sure they'd understand. |

Now, now, now, James, just because you got beat in an auction you shouldn’t resort to name-calling. The folks at Battersea Pen are great people and well known in the pen collecting community. They did not steal your pen, like any other auction whether online or otherwise, you were simply outbid. Weather it be six seconds before the end of the auction or six hours when its “once, twice, sold, time” in an auction or in this case the time runs out those with the high bid in win. That’s why it’s called an auction, the high bidder wins when the auction is over. The folks at Battersea are fine people and to publicly call them names just isn’t right over losing the auction you though you might win. You never know maybe this was a final piece for them to complete an area in their collection and they were prepared to pay up to $500 for the pen. They obviously were ready to pay more than you had decided the pen was worth to you. Just my 2 cents worth. |

NOTICE OF AUCTION FOR VINTAGE FOUNTAIN PENS
To all interested parties:
There will be an auction of vintage fountain pens, mechanical pencils, boxed sets, desk sets, and other items including accessories on September 1, 2002 at Schott’s Auction House in Alexandria, Indiana. I have attached the auction broadside with all information pertinent to the above sale.
Have also attached an order form if you should wish to order a catalog of all Lot Numbers. Any catalog order must be submitted before August 15th in order to arrive in time for the sale. Since this is a one-time sale of my personal collection I would prefer to receive a Money Order to pay for either the CD or printed catalogs.
The prices are $15 for the COLOR CD (alphabetical with lot/catalog #) and $20 (numerical with lot/catalog #) for a printed BLACK & WHITE copy in binder. There are 84 pages of photos and documents. Shipping and handling will be by U. S. Mail and is included in this price unless you request special handling or shipping. You will be notified of these extra charges when the order is filled. The order(s) will be shipped immediately upon arrival of the form. If an order is received after August 15th I will promptly return the order form and Money Order, so be sure to clearly print your name and address on the order form.
If you chose to order the CD you will need a computer with a CD Rom drive and at least 4-X speed. These personally scanned photos and documents are in the standard JPEG format and were used with the Windows 98 and Windows Me (Update) operating systems. Every picture or document should be easily viewed by using the Kodak Imaging program, which is included with Windows. They can then be viewed at close range and printed out, if wanted. Since I’ve used the JPEG format, you should also be able to import them into your own photo or graphic programs easily for editing.
If you are concerned about viruses during the opening of these documents, you need not worry since every item was generated using my scanner and CD-RW drive. There are no imported documents. I have McAfee Clinic On Line Virus Scan, which is updated regularly and used religiously and do not have any known viruses. If you have any questions regarding the attached items you can contact me at the following e-mail address. Also I will not compile a mailing list for any reason and will not distribute same.
penauction9-1-02@juno.com (this address will be deleted after the sale).
If you need directions to the sale or any other information about the sale, please contact the auctioneer, Mike Schott as shown on the broadside. Thank you for your interest!

Last night I found a Parker Bicentennial Pen on auction. The reserve was $100 and the current selling price was $109.75. I put a bid for $150 and was the highest bidder until the close of the auction at 9:41 pm est. Battersea Pen stole the pen from me with six seconds remaining on a bid that topped out my bid of $150 with a final bid of $152.50. I checked out the commpany and found that they were from London, England. A well established pen seller and buyer business. I feel that it was a below the belt bid by some pervert who stayed up the night with a raging hard on for this pen and put the bid at 241 am in the morning, London time! Being from Philadlephia with the pen having fragments from Independence Hall it meant a lot to me to own something at a reasonable price only to have it stolen at the very last second. Shame on Battersea Pen for stealing something from me that used to belong from Independence Hall as the British have to resort to such means since they lost the Revolutionary war in 1776! Such bastards from battersea pen we have! |

Hi,
I was surfing a couple of nights ago, looking for vintage fountain pens (preferably Sheaffer or Parker). I ran across a nice site that had a lot of vintage pens. The site showed each individual pen with cap off and both cap and staff were diagonal on the screen. The site was very well done and had one of the better selection of fountain pens I've seen so far. The unfortunate part is that I can't remember the site address...if someone knows what I'm trying to find by the above description, please email me. I'm in the market for a '20's Sheaffer or Parker, black with a fine nib. Thanks.

Both Sonic Blue and Black Chery dried instantly, with no waiting. I had a bottle of Sherwood Green that dried instantly when I bought it but after the bottle sat for about a year and a half on my shelf, the ink became very slow drying. My new bottle of Sherwood Green which I received a few days ago also dries quickly. Now I'm wondering if something happens to the ink over time... Anyway, now that I'm using them with dip pens, they won't be sitting on the shelf for a year and a half. |

Our shipment of the two new PR colors, Black Cherry and Sonic Blue arrived this morning (Tuesday). Sonic Blue is a bluish-black with greyish undertones, sort of a slate blue color. Black Cherry is well ... black cherry, not burgundy, this has a bit more brown in it, so a deep dark red.
Always nice to see new ink colors, not makeovers over of old ink colors! We'll get samples up on the website soon.
We're ready to start shipping the new colors now! Just drop us an emailto order.

Now I know why my ears were burning! I come over here and find my name mentioned twice!
Anyway, last night I tried out these two new colors in a very flexible dip pen in my pen and ink sample journal. Of course, flex dip pens make a very dark, saturated line than your average fountain pen, so keep that in mind.
The Private Sonic Blue turns out to be a wonderful blue black. I am a big blue black fan, and this one really excited me when I tried it. It has more of a warm hue than Midnight Blues, but it's just as dark. While Midnight Blues is a very dark blue, this Sonic Blue is closer in hue to blue black. It's like Waterman blue black on steroids; very rich and vibrant.
The Black cherry is exactly what you would expect; a very, very dark red. Red with dignity! Easy to read, and yet no mistaking that this is red. Now I can write a letter in red without being accused of taking a walk on the wild side.
As for famous PR "laxative" qualities, these two are on the same side of the fence as most of the others and not on the Tanzanite/Plum side.
Congratulations to Private Reserve inks on two very useful colors!

Just this week these new PR inks are being delivered to your favorite ink dealers.
Both are exceptionally unique in color and richness, unlike anything I can compare to others in this color range.
By coincidence I sent some to the #1 PR Fan Russ Stutler in Japan, which incredibly arrived in almost exactly 50 hours from Illinois, in spite of a growing typhoon approaching Tokyo today.
To me...the Sonic Blue looks like an old Fender guitar I once knew, and the Black Cherry looks like......real Black Cherry.
So call your favorite ink dealer, fill up your favorite pen and let's discuss.

| Warehouse Find! NOS Pelikan M400's and 600's OLD STYLE!
|

7/14/2002: Jon Rosenbaum |
|
Have aquired some terrific new old stock Pelikan 400's and 600's (some pens marked "W. Germany") from a long closed pen and stationary store. The pens come in the neat black plastic clamshell cases complete with papers and outer cardboard slip box. The 400's are equiped with 14k gold nibs (single color), have nicer trim than the newer versions, I believe. The 600's are the same size as the 400's but have additional GP trim ring on the barrel near at the piston knob and a second GF cap ring and are equiped with 18k single color nibs. Here's what's available: M400 Green OM flexy nib $110, M400 Green XF nib $100, TORTISE (gorgeous!) B Flex nib $135. Black M600's--one each B flex nib and OM flex $115 ea; F and XF $110 ea. BURGUNDY M600's--2 B flex nibs @ $125 ea, one F nib and 2 XF nibs @ $120 ea. Add $7.00 for insured priority mail for domestic USA shipment. Multiple pens shipping cost will be determined based on total number. Checks OK, money orders preferred. First confirming email gets 'em. Thanks Jon R |

Hello all!
From now until end-of-day Monday, July 15th, the Sheaffer School *ballpoints* are all 50% off of the listed price. These sale pens are not eligible for the Monthly Special:
http://www.hisnibs.com/school.htm
I've made a permanent reduction in price to $4.00 per bottle for the Doctor Blue/Black ink, as those that remain all have ink-stained bottles and/or boxes as a result of spillage from other bottles during shipment from China:
http://www.hisnibs.com/ink.htm
Auction-wise, for eBay, please click on the following link and then type in "palace" (without the quotes) in the Single Seller box to see what's closing in the next few days:
http://pages.ebay.com/search/items/search_seller.html
For Penbid, it's also "palace" in the Search By Seller box:
http://pen.luxbid.com/Auction/XcAPSearch.asp
Don't forget to take advantage of the July Special when ordering non-sale
items from the website:

| No Mention Anywhere Of...
|
| |
7/14/2002: Christopher |
|
I just ordered three bottles of Fahrney's Plum, three bottles of Fahrney's Forrest Green and three bottles of Fahrney's Blue (based upon the examples shown in Gregg Clark's very fine The Ink Sampler). I have seen absolutely no mention of these colors on any alt.collecting.pens-pencils postings either good or bad except one that claimed that it is made by Bexley. I was told by the people at Private Reserve that the ink under the Bexley label is their ink (Private Reserve ink) which Bexley puts his own label on. Why are the Fahrney inks and colors so conspicuously absent from any mention? Is it possible that no
one else has used the above three colors? If anyone out there has used these specific colors and/or has had experience with other Fahrney colors please e-mail me directly at christopherfrank@att.net
Thank you in advance for your time and attention.

| NYC Pen Show coming soon
|
| |
7/13/2002: Len Provisor |
|
Quickly following the DC show will be Steve and Maryann Zucker's NYC Pen Show.
Last year was the very first NYC pen show, and it was a memorable event. This year the show promises to be even more exceptional, since Maryann never does anything less than grand.
With about 7 million people within walking distance to this show, you can be sure there will be a good attendance.
Already over 120 tables are booked, the show is being held at The Helmsley and an entire floor is reserved for wall-to-wall pens.
If you have plans to come in to attend, make your reservations now while rooms are still available.
This year a pen auction will again be featured, and Maryann is now taking pens for this auction...both vintage and new.
Seminars, repairs, tons of ink and papers and of course...it's NEW YORK, it just doesn't get any better.
See the Pen Show links for more info and take a look at the photo journal from the 2001 NYC Pen Show.
Maryann will post more info as it becomes available.

|
The Washington, DC pen show is coming up quickly Aug 8-11 and I look forward to seeing many Pentracers, Zossers and Penlovers.
Richard Binder and Don Fluckinger will have a table filled with many surprises, including some of his magic nibs which we can actually test befoe purchase. I suggest all Pentracers and Penlovers who attend descend on his table immediately on Saturday for first pickin's. I promise they will not last long.
Private Reserve Inks has a surprise giveaway at the door also, probably the most beautiful ink blotter I ever made, and it was totally created by humble Russ Stutler. This design will also be made into a poster which will plaster the walls. Terry will also release two new inks, so be sure to see your favorite ink dealer.
Mr Nagahara from Sailor pen will continue to "Wow" the crowd with his very unusual nibs. This is one exhibit that is a must see.
Delta, the show sponsor is giving away about 500 commemorative ink bottles at the door, so be sure to get there early the day you attend. The Delta exhibit is usually at the entrance in the Foyer along with most of the new pen dealers.
Fountain Pen Hospital and the "boys" always have 3 or 4 tables loaded with eye candy..be sure to get your 2002 catalogs and they may have their famous calenders left also.
For some really prime vintage pens be sure to see Steve and Maryann Zucker at PENSTOP, who also carry many new pens such as Krone, Delta, Conklin and the amazing LOIMINCHAY, including a Mandarin to die for.
Ahem...I'll have some nice toy airplanes. The two Parker DC3s will be the last in the series of Parker corporate aircraft.
Geoffrey Parker will also attend, he looks forward to meeting Pentracers and Penlovers...so Pentracers, be sure to wear your bright yellow Snailee badges.
Miroslav Tischler, author of the Penkala pens book will be attending, this is his first visit to the U.S. and is very excited. His famous book on Penkala pens will be available as a show special for only $50.
Dov Randel will also visit from Israel, he is one of the founders of the new Israel Pen Club. This is his first visit and you can imagine his excitement. Dov is a Pentracer, he'll love to meet you.
Pentrace will be represented at my table with free ink blotters.
Many other dealers will have ink blotters also, so time to load up on free samples...be sure to ask for them.
Dean Tweeddale of Penlovers will be on hand with free pens for kids donated by Chartpak/Pelikan.
I'll have plenty of those bright yellow Snailee Pentrace badges at my table, but you can write, call or e-mail me I will be happy to send some to you before.
BTW, some rooms are still available at the Marriott nearby at the same show rate of $79. You can e-mail Bob Johnson to inquire.

| I will be at the Washington, D.C., show
|
| |
7/12/2002: Richard |
|
In case you were wondering (or even if you weren't), the answer is yes! I will be at the Washington, D.C., show in August. Together with Don Fluckinger, I will have a table at the show. We will have a few pens, post cards, anatomy posters, vintage pen ads, and handmade Northern Woods pen rests for sale.
I will have a supply of custom-ground Pelikan M200 nibs in crisp and cusive italic, crisp and cursive left- and right-footed oblique, and stub, for sale for $35.00 each. These nibs fit M200, M2520, M400, and M600 pens. I will have demonstrator pens available for you to test nibs and decide your preference. After you've purchased your choice, you can get instant gratification by dropping over to the Swisher Pens table, where Chuck and Chun will be offering for sale Pelikan pens that will accept these nibs.
I will also be regrinding nibs for walk-up customers, for $30.00 each. I can grind any of the above shapes, with modifications particularly suited to your unique way of holding a pen. Most dramatic results can be obtained if I start from a broad nib, but I need at least a medium nib to produce an italic or oblique. (I can also regrind a standard nib to make it smaller, such as converting a medium to a fine.)
I look forward to seeing familiar faces and to meeting some new ones. See you in August! |

This is a very serious test
Go to my website WWW.INKBLOTTERS.COM
As soon as you access the site you should hear the sound of four Parker Pen Co DC3s flying over your desk, assuming you have speakers and they are cranked up a bit...for best results
Not everyone will hear this...I am interested to hear from those who do NOT hear this sound. It is a MP3 sound wave, and should be audible to anyone with Internet Explorer V.4 or better.
My purpose is to see if this will work, unfortunately for some reason I do not hear this. Supposedly 85% or more of all computers should be able to hear this.
Images of the new Parker DC3 models will be loaded on the site shortly, tickets for free rides will be available
Thanks for your help.

| Re: Nib problems: Montblanc 149 and Marlen Chagall
|

|
Most damaged or improperly ground nibs are repairable. Depending on how badly the Montblanc's nib is damaged, it might be only a minor tweak, or it might be more extensive. The Marlen Chagall is almost certainly easy to fix; the reluctance to start is most usually due to an improper tip shape that the manufacturer applied in an attempt to make the nib super smooth. I am one of several nib workers who can deal with these problems; please visit my site: http://www.richardspens.com/ |

I received a marlen chagall as a birthday present. 18k nib, medium point. Skips alot and difficult to initiate inkflow at the beginning of a word. | Damaged Montblanc Meisterstück 149
|

7/8/2002: Ken Schechter |

My son won a Montblanc Meisterstück 149 pen about 5 years ago. Upon opening the box for the first time, he dropped the pen on the kithcen floor and damaged the nib. The nib appeared to to be separated more than it should so I attempted to gently squeeze the nib back together again. Any advice on getting this repaired? Can nibs be adjusted or do they need to be replaced. It does write but doesn't look quite right. Thanks. |

Prashant,
If you found a P/B Centennial Duofold
that is not in diminished condition
for $210, that is about as low as I
would think you'll find one. Of course,
if you keep looking, you *could* find
one for less. How much time and energy
and passage of time is another $10 in
savings worth to you?

| ST Dupont nibs

7/8/2002: Johan |
|
Hi,
Does anyone else have an ST Dupont?
There is an Stylophiles article on the
Statue of Liberty which say the Dupont
nib is very smooth.
I myself have a Orpheo with a fine nib.
I'm having problems with it. It skips
and the ink flow seems a bit inconsistent,
perhaps it's the flex to the nib?
I also find it a bit scrathcy and when I
write at a good pace, I can actually
hear the nib scratching the paper.
Is this normal? Do you think ST Dupont
can make any adjustments to this?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks. |

Hi all:
We have one each of the Berlin and Stockholm pens with medium nibs available for immediate shipping. Respond to this e-mail and get an additional five percent discount for a final price of $208 plus shipping. First firm e-mails get the pens. Buy now before these are completely gone as Pelikan is tooling up for the next pens in this series -- San Francisco/Madrid. (By the way, we will accept advance orders for these pens as well)
Also, we have the new model Platinum Music Pen, which is based on a different, slimmer model of pen than the older version featured in this month's issue of Stylophiles. This pen has a nice feel in the hand and writes beautifully and would be perfect for those who like a slimmer pen. Our price: $189 plus shipping. Go to the following link for a better look:
http://www.penspiration.com/platinum_pens.html
By the way, we also have the cool Hobbit Journal featured in the picture of the Music Pen available now as well. Price: Only $5.95 plus shipping. For a better look, go to:

| Pelikan Rollerball Refills?
|
| |
7/6/2002: Daniel |

Does anyone know of a good rollerball refill that can be used in the Pelikan M600 Rollerball? I have a Pelikan M600 Fountain Pen & Rollerball. I love both except for one thing, the Rollerball Refill (338M) is a real disappointment. One, Pelikan doesnt' have a fine point available. Two, and most important, the ink doesn't flow uniformly and only flows if the tip is down. I'm a therapist is use my pen for notes when with clients. PROBLEM: if I hold a tablet in my lap, the ink "dries out" and I have to shake the pen or return to a flat position with the tip down. Haven't had that problem with the Quill refills, but even though Quill says their refill will work with Pelikan, it won't with the M600. |

| Parker "51" Beechcraft airplane models
|
| |
7/4/2002: Len Provisor |
|
The Parker corporate aircraft models I have produced, starting with the famous 1928 "Duofold" Fairchild has been a fun project.
My friend Dan Zazove ecouraged me with the original idea, and the generous help of Geoffrey S. Parker who provided much of the technical materials and his personal family archive photos. The Parker Pen Co. had several other aircraft in their fleet over the years, but frankly, we can only make so many planes as this really is a specialized interest to collectors. I would suggest that if you have any inkling to purchase any one of these models it would be wise to secure one now. Yeas from now they will be in high demand and total production was very limited. Duofolds, only 137...and a few were made by special request in a gorgeous Mandarin yellow. Maryann Zucker of PENSTOP has at least one available for sale. The Parker "51" Beechcrafts only 107 models were made, and the current and LAST corporate models are two Douglas DC3's. One from 1954 the N51A, and the 1960 N61A. Images can be seen at : http://www.inkblotters.com/len.htm
I think the most gorgeous decoration is on the 1946 Beechraft model. The Parker Pen Co. has chosen to order this model Beechcraft in a smaller 12" wingspan version as a dealer store display gift to promote the new Parker "51" fountain pen due to be released in October. So if you really like Parker pen ephemera of a very limited nature, any of these models would be an obvious investment for years of pleasure.
These models are numbered and personally signed by Geoffrey S. Parker. There just are not that many around. The DC3 models will be the last ones in the Parker corporate aircraft sales. However, I do have some more surprises for 2003 already in the works.
Visit : http://www.inkblotters.com/len.htm to see the new DC3 models. Visit www.inkblotters.com to see the other models of the "Duofold" and the Beechcraft aircraft. Only a few dealers have extras of prior models, including Lee Chait.

Dear Fellow Pen Collectors:
A few weeks ago I listed 83 very nice working pens. I sold 20 of them and thus have 63 left. My wife feels that I overpriced the rest of the pens and that is the reason why they did not sell. She based that opinion on the fact that fountain pens, let alone working restored fountain pens, are very scarce at flea markets, antique shows, etc. (in the wild). Although some of the pens on ebay might appear to be cheaper, they really are not, when you add in the cost of repair, the breaking of the pen during your own repair attempt, or the hassle of returning the pen; because the seller "knew nothing about pens" when he took the picture of the pen with the hole facing away from the camera; my prices appeared to be correct. My no hassle return policy should have taken care of any insecurity from anyone who has not dealt with me before.
I sent my list of pens to over 125 people all over the world. Dealing with a world market, one would assume there was a pen for every person.
THEREFORE, I, AM HAVING A 'YOU SET THE PRICE SALE'. If I can live with your price (assuming it isn't too much less than I paid for the pen) WE HAVE A DEAL.
Please email me for a list of the 63 pens for sale. All pens are guaranteed. All pens are in good+ to excellent condition, restored and working. Buyer pays actual postage. The first email wins.
GOOD LUCK.
Thank you for reading all of this.

I had signed up for the Show at the first opportunity back in January or February. Having seen a post about the rooms in DC and having accumulatd over 500,000 Marriot points I can tell you it is much easier to make reservations early and cancel them if you can't make it than it is to try and get something at the last minute. | HELP WITH ESTIE NIB
|
| |
7/1/2002: Mike Krut |
|
Hi Guys:
I picked up an Estie today with a nib I have never seen before. The nib looks like a 9000 series, made of steel(?). it's silver in color with a gold shield which starts just below the breather hole and continues down the face to about 3/16" from the bottom, there are lines which begins at the bottom and proceed upward in long curving lines which curves away from the nib, the nib reads: "ESTERBROOK/RELIEF MED/OSMIRIDIUIUMTIP/MADE IN U.S.A. The feed is of the older variety, flat on the bottom and semi-round on the top.
If anyone knows anything about this nib, please advise.
TIA,
Mike Krut |

Hello there ...
I came across this pen at an estate sale. Etched in the center band is Meisterstuck 12 ...well, I think it’s a 12 ...the one is highly stylized and may be a 7 ...so this could be a Meisterstuck 72.
At first blush I thought that the 12 was for 12k gold ...but there isn’t a “k”.
I’ve been looking all over the web for pictures to properly identify this pen...even went to the library with no luck.
Can someone please direct me to web page with pictures and information of vintage Meisterstucks?
Thanks!
