"Movie Pens" Challenge
      7/31/2000:  Esther
How about starting a new "series" on this site? Here is the first entry. Can you identify the fountain pen used by Tippi Hedren in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds". There was a good closeup when she wrote a short note with it. Maybe, some of you could come up with more movies pen questions. Good luck! P.S. I am offering Waterman's Serenite FP for $345 plus shipping, while supply lasts.

Recife pens
      7/31/2000:  Mike Berman
Although I don't own a Blue Mystique I do have 2 Crystals - a Senior and a Baby. I love these pens, especially the fact that they are eyedropper fillers with clear acrylic resevoirs and a LARGE ink capacity. Both are well made, excellent writers and reasonably priced. On the somewhat limited basis of my experience with the Crystals I would, in good conscience, recommend Recife pens.

Golden King
      7/31/2000:  Kristi
Is anyone familiar with Golden King mechanical pencils? Made in USA is all I know and just received one as a gift. Had a great time at Las Vegas show and only lost $3.25 on the slots. Great to see Frank and Bernie and Susan and Sam and Frank and Boris et all who worked very hard to help us spend our money in the "write" places. Not every day where you get to handle a pen named for the locale and I believe several of the Omas Las Vegas pens were purchased!

Seeking info on Recife Blue Mystique
      7/31/2000:  J. Cullen
Hello: I would appreciate any comments anyone has on Recife FP's, especially the Blue Mystique. Are these well made pens? Do they write well etc... I'll say thanks now. JCC

fountain pens

Can anyone tell me anything about a Norton and Son pen with a very delicate, thin stem made of ivory or mother of pearl? The nip is gold color. Any info on this company, the age, possible value. Thank you from a real new collector.

Parker Maxima speedline filler
      7/30/2000:  Greg Miller
Don't have one to sell, but depending on when your pen was made, the plastic one could be original. All Vacumatics from about 1942 on, including Maximas, came with plastic fillers. Those cool metal ones were sacrificed to the war effort.

Grand Connaiseur
      7/29/2000:  Alan
Frank - In my opinion the Grand Connaiseur in tortoiseshell was the most beautiful pen Sheaffer ever made. They are somewhat difficult to locate and you may pay up to or perhaps more than list which was $410, I believe. There were several other colors made which are not quite as desireable and also a sterling and vermeil. I am not a Sheaffer collector but really do like the pens - I occasionaly use a tortoiseshell of mine and it writes well - although not as good as the new Legacy. At any rate I would get my hands on some if I were you as they will probably be hot items in the future. The laquer is Sheaffer's best.

Mike: On Esterbrooks
      7/29/2000:  Len Provisor
Mike, you are very right about Esterbrooks. A surge in new interest in the last few years, and prices are steadily climbing for these neat little workhorse pens. One nice feature I like in particular are the springy-flexy nibs, not found on higher priced pens. A friend of mine, David Mason, is doing a brisk business on grinding Esterbrook and Sheaffer steel nibs into wonderful stubs and italics, for a modest price that will give great performance. Remember when these puppies were $4. and $6. each?

Sheaffer Grand Connaiseur
      7/29/2000:  Frank Hurn
Is anyone familiar with the Sheaffer Grand Connaisseur Fountain Pen? What is your take on this pen and how hard are they to come by these days?

A little tribute to Esterbrook
      7/29/2000:  Mike
I feel inclined to say a few words about Esterbrook pens. I hear a lot of jokes pointed at these quasi-vintage babies, but I love em for several reasons. 1) These pens are about the most well-made I have seen. I can buy one at any local flea market, often getting a rarely used pen with no flaws, in working order. 2) They are simple, yet diverse. Esterbrooks-the "j" series-can range from black to pearlized to a wide range of pastel colors. I have even found that the desk pens are widely diverse; I have one desk model that is flat and round, pastel green ceramic with a pastel pen. Only seen a few of these 3) They are easily repaired. You can rebladder one of these babies or change out a point more easily than on about any other pen I have encountered. So think before you knock these princes among the workhorses. Estie lovers unite! :-) Mike

Ooops! Glitch on Inkblotters.com
      7/29/2000:  Len Provisor
As can happen, a glitch is preventing some pages from coming up on my new website www.inkblotters.com. Should be fxed soon. Be sure to take a peek at what does load, my Blotter Gallery, kind of an ink blotter "Hall of Fame", plus two pages of neat closeup photos of my 1928 Parker Duofold airplane. If you are going to the DC pen show, be sure to visit my table, FREE Duofold airplane ink blotters and Historical Airplane brochure. If you miss DC, OHIO is another great show in November. Local show, 120+ tables, huge attendance, it ain't a small town show anymore.

Parker Vest Pocket or Golf Pens and Pencils!
      7/29/2000:  Gary A. Eaton
1)Parker Streamline Duofold Deluxe Ringtop Vest Pocket Pearl and Black Pen. Usual ambering, barrel and cap. Slight oxidation to top and blind caps. Small-large-small cap ring configuration, no brassing on bands, inscribed on barrel "Leone King" in neat block letters, pen inscription weak but visible. Duofold Deluxe nib. $100 post paid. 2) Parker Streamline Duofold Deluxe Vest Pocket Ringtop Pearl and Green Pen. Small-large-small cap band configuration Usual Ambering, heavier on barrel. This pen would be worth a bit but the top has a very faint hairline crack going halfway around the top of the cap, about a quarter inch from the cap top, marked by a faint black line. Probably precludes the pen from being a daily user. Numbered Parker Deluxe Duofold nib. Good inscription, nice black blindcap, top piece and section. Losing money on this one $55.00 post paid. 3) Beautiful Lapis Blue Parker Ringtop Vest Pocket or Golf pencil. The blue on this is very bright - maybe 95%. There are some slight nicks on the cone of the pencil, and I have no lead for it, so can't guarantee it works, although the cone turns like it should. Does have some bite marks on the back of the pen and tassie. This is the best colored of my dozen or so Lapis Duofolds. $95 post paid. 4) Burgandy and Black Parker Duofold Clipped Vest Pocket Pencil, good inscription, cone brassed and has some marks. Color on this one is beautiful too with the burgandy still very bright, clip looks in excellent condition $100 postpaid. Money back guarantee on all pens, I pay shipping in the States. PayPal Accepted and immediate shipment, checks must clear first. By the way, would like to have one vest pocket pen-pencil set for my collection, so if anyone has a clipped vest pocket burgandy and black pen, or a ringtop Lapis vest pocket pen, or a ringtop vest pocket pearl and black pencil, might could talk trade!

Parkers for Sale!
      7/29/2000:  Gary A. Eaton
Time to thin out the collection! 1) Parker Pearl and Black Lucky Curve Senior flat-top Deluxe Imperial Duofold, inscribed Dr. C. C. Gibson in small block lettering. Doctors must have loved these because two of my four have "Dr." inscribed. Typical ambering of cap and barrel, clip brassed lightly at the bend, and 75% at the top of the ball, cap bands fine, oxidation of the blind cap and top piece. Top piece has a ¼" long cut and couple of smaller dents in one side. Huge Parker Duofold Made in USA nib, with #15 on it. May be a hairline on the base of the nib up to the U in USA, but really hard to see. Still an impressive pen. Has been sacked and ready to use. This was the rare transitional pen that came out in late 28-early 29 just before the change to the streamline model. One of my favorite Duofolds - $165.00 post paid 2) Black Senior Streamline Duofold, inscribed in small gold block letters "Domerick Tumolo". Imprint clear. Lower cap band 50% brassed, slight brassing on ball of clip, Nib - Parker Arrow U.S.A. pen. Not resacked, Nice pen! $95 post paid. 3) Jade Senior Streamline Duofold, barrel darkened to spinch color as most are. Cap shows band of the jade around cap bands and at top, but some spinaching around middle. Clip has some brassing on the letters and ball but pretty decent. Cap bands show no brassing. Parker Arrow nib. Some oxidation top piece, blind cap better. Has not been sacked. $90 post paid. 4) Depression era Parker, marbled gray-green color, blind cap same. No clip. This has the small-large-small band configuration of the '34 Streamline Dufolds, and the one year of Vacumatics. Has the little single step on the top of the cap and the blind cap. Marked Geo. S. Parker made in U.S.A., just over 5" capped. Unusual pen - has been resacked. $55 post paid. Vest Pocket Duofolds to follow. Money back guarantee, I pay shipping in the States. PayPal Accepted and immediate shipment, checks must clear first.

Visit my new website !!
      7/28/2000:  Len Provisor
Dean Tweeddale, pen collector and modest Webmaster has just totally revamped my website. Rush right over and take a peek at my Blotter Gallery, some great ink blotter designs from many of our pen friends and distributors. A new one from OMAS will knock your socks off. Try and get one quick, who knows if they will re-order or have any left. Also have two pages of close-up photos of my 1928 Parker Duofold airplane model. Also vintage photos. Some people actually did not think it was a real plane. It sure was, served for many years flying Parker customers. Today it rests somewhere in a reef between Cuba and Florida. As always, FREE blotter samples, and a Historical Brochure on the Parker Duofold airplane, FREE for the asking.

Hey, does anyone know a way to get a map for places to buy German Gelly Roll Pens??

Parco
      7/28/2000:  Ron Zorn
I answered Michael directly, but thought that I would post here as well. I think that Larry is right. Parco (as I understand it) was PArker pen COmpany. I read somewhere that the Parco was made by Parker, but the name was changed to disguise the manufacturer. Much the same as Sheaffer made the WASP (Walter A Sheaffer Pen)pens. Both are depression era pens. I have a Parco, and a Parkette that are exactly the same - shape, clip, bands. Color is different, but they both have the marbled plastic. Ron Zorn

converter for Schmidt pen
      7/28/2000:  Ron Zorn
Cathy, If I were to hazard a guess, I would say that you could use one of the universal converters. Try a Rotring. I had a case where the barrel was not long enough to accept a converter - so I cut off the end of the cartridge, and using cement (in my case shellac) attached a sac. To fill, I just squeeze the sac. Works just fine. Ron Zorn

Montblanc Rouge et Noir FP
      7/28/2000:  JiaXian
Hi, I have one rare Montblanc Rouge et Noir FP for sale. It is mint in box with papers. These pens were recalled by Montlanc due to some trademark infringement problems regarding the model name, hence they are incrasingly hard to find. Please email me for more details. Regards, JiaXian

Schmidt nib on pen
      7/28/2000:  Cathy
I have a purple-marbled fountain pen with the words "SCHMIDT IRIDIUM POINT" on the nib but no other markings or name on the pen. Would anyone have any information on this pen? I'd like to know what kind of converter would fit it. Thanks!

SF Pen Show Volunteers Needed!
      7/27/2000:  Scott Summerfield
Hi all...the third annual San Francisco Bay Area International Pen Show is slated for September 21-24 at the Oakland Marriott/Oakland Convention Center. The first two shows were a huge success by anyone's measurement, and here's a great way for you to be a part of it. We're looking for an outstanding team of volunteers who are willing to work at least one three or four hour shift in exchange for a free pass to the entire show (worth $60). Volunteers will primarily work at the registration table, and sufficient breaks will be provided so you can enjoy the show also. Shifts are available on Friday and Saturday from 9am-midnight and on Sunday from 9am-4pm. Shifts run from 9am-noon, noon-4pm, 4pm-8pm, and 8pm-midnight. If you would like more information, just email me; if you would like to volunteer, please respond with full contact information and your first and second choices for shifts. Thanks in advance for your interest in the show! Scott Summerfield

CNN Video on Krone Pen
      7/27/2000:  Max Hughey
Did anyone see the CNN.com Krone Pen video segment? I was very surprised to learn that the general public would be interested in a pen containing the genetic essence of Abraham Lincoln. Perhaps, it is the $1,600 price tag which intrigued them; however, I think it had more to do with the Jurassic Park parallel. The report was sure to mention that no one would be able to clone the 16th president.

DC Pen Show - Ohio Pen Show
      7/27/2000:  Len Provisor
If Chicago is the oldest and one of the biggest Pen Shows ever in the U.S., then DC is like the "Daddy of 'em all". In just another two weeks Bob Johnson is throwing a pen party you cannot miss. If you are anywhere in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by. I look forward to DC and about 200+ tables of stuff that "pen dreams" are made of in modern and vintage. Good thing my wife will be there also so I can join the hunt and occassional buyer's frenzy. Believe me, you 'aint a pen show vet until you jump into a pen frenzy, hot & sweaty, kneeing, elbowing, pushing to get close, no holds barred, survival of the skinniest and those with the longest arms. I'll have my 1928 Parker Duofold vintage airplane on display, be sure to stop by and pick up a FREE historical brochure and a new Duofold Airplane ink blotter, created by Pier Gustafson. Don't forget, airplane orders taken ONLY TO END OF THE YEAR. Then another in the Series. It's really neat. Order one. Another reason I like DC so much is because it's right around the corner from the OHIO Pen Show in Novemeber, another favorite and fast-growing show for so many because of one simple reason. Terry & Sonya Mawhorter are sooooo OHIO, a whole different atmosphere, a small town show with over 125 tables by now, driving distance from almost anywhere in middle U.S.A., and with the kind of unique characters found only in Ohio. Dick Johnson with his razor wit, tall tales and unbelievable pile of parts, Mike Hansen thinking he'll find another pen base he doesn't already have, and a real fun time. By the way, in next few days visit www.inkblotters.com to see a Gallery of Photos on the 1928 Duofold airplane, and also my Blotter Gallery of creative blotters from many of our friends in the pen business. As always...FREE samples on request, anywhere in the world. Website being developed by Dean Tweeddale.

Parco
      7/26/2000:  Larry Shelton
From what I've seen Parco was a budget pen produced by as you stated "the Parker Pen Company." I have a 1932 ad showing a Parco set being used as a promotional item. In a 1933 Parker catalog (no Parcos btw) the pen looks almost identical to the budget Parkette line. From the style of the pen down to the clip and lever. Any Parco collectors out there feel free to chime in.....

Parco pen
      7/26/2000:  Michael McKeehan
While cruising a local flea market, I came across a dark green mother of pearl effect, plastic lever filler. Marked on the barrel is Parco Made in USA PAT PEND. Parker pen Co. Janesville Wis. I've never encountered this particular make before and would really be grateful to learn something about the age of this pen and the company. It is very striking in appearence and writes beautifully with a 14k nib marked "14k PARCO made in USA.

Does anyone know the price or value for a brand new montblanc roller ball pen? Information is appreciated. Thank.

yellow curve
      7/23/2000:  Nathan Marolf
The value of a Yellow Parker Duofold Lucky Curve Pen with one crack in the cap is approx. double that of one with a crack in the barrel as well, but half that of one without any cracks at all. It could be argued that using the "Reichenbach Test Evaluation Principle" applied to the componential value of individual parts of a fountain pen you could arrive at a more accurate appraisal but somehow I doubt it .........then again you could cross- reference ebay results over 30 days and arrive at an average value or ask someone who wants to buy it off you how much you would have to pay them to take it off your hands, failing that maybe you could just claim on the insurance........

Parker Duofold Lucky Curve Pen 4/25/11
      7/23/2000:  Skip Skipper

Need Nib
      7/22/2000:  Will Thorpe
Looking for a Nib. I have just finished restoring a Green & Gold Hard Rubber DIXIE lever filler flat top with black ends. The cap groove was worn smooth on the back side. Somebody really used this pen a lot. I recut the groove. No Nib! The only other DIXIE I have has a Parker Nib, about a #2. My calibrated eyeball thinks a Wahl #2 would fit just fine. Post or emmail if you have one. Thanks, Will

11928 Duofold airplane adventures
      7/22/2000:  Len Provisor
November 5th, 1928 Kenneth Parker signed a purchase order for this famous aircraft, at a cost of $ 13,672.50. Modern optional equipment included a Turn and Bank Indicator, just in case the ground or horizon was not visible, it was good to know you were changing directions towards or away from Janesville. Also, extra large landing lights mounted on the leading edge of the wings. Excellent idea just in case Ace Pilot LaParle had to find an emergency meadow at night that may contain a few sleeping cows. Can you imagine a Duofold called a Holstein or a Guernsey? We're so glad Mr. Parker fell in love with that Oriental Mandarin vase. By Feb. 1929 the Duofold airplane completed a Dixie Tour of most Southern States, visiting major dealers and distributors, giving rides to as many as 240 guests in one week. This plane was considered a "Giant" in size, holding four passengers, pilot and co-pilot,featuring a huge 410hp Wasp radial engine capable of a blazing 140 mph. Now the good news. First in a Series of Parker Historical Aircraft. This exact replica model can be yours. An exact solid wood construction, 18" wingspan, 30 coats of paint and exact hand lettered decoration, all mounted on a black wood base that will be hand signed by Geoffrey S. Parker, great grandson of George S. Parker. What a great piece of Parker history you can own and enjoy. Only $250. + frt from Illinois. Limited production to subscription orders only until end of this year...then there will be no more. First delivery Aug/Sept. 2000. Final production delivery approx. Feb.2001. E-mail provisorpro@earthlink.net for more information or vintage and model photos of this model. Next week visit my website www.inkblotters.com, I will have a Gallery of Photos of the Parker Duofold Airplane.

I also have a Waterman L'Etalon ball point. Black. Mint in box, never everything. $85. Finally, the outstanding Waterman Serenite (reminds me of a Japanese sword). Medium. New-in-box, never everything. $385!!! Thank you.

Hey Dean , any follow-up to the Miami show you were talking about ? I think we would all really appreciate some input after the build up, & I guess it's hard finding the time to keep up with all this stuff on top of everything else, but doggone-it you really whetted our appetites !!

3 pens and 1 pencil F/S
      7/21/2000:  J. L. Jones
Here's three pretty nice vac 51's and a nice big jade Shaeffer's pencil: 1. 51, blue, striped GF cap, no dents, date 6 + 3 dots 2. 51, gray, striped steel, gold trim cap, date 3 3. 51, gray, striped GF cap, date 6 + 3 dots, name engraved, still with gold in name These are nice clean pens; don't appear to have been used much. All are fine point, and are unrestored so I assume they need diaphragms and a good internal cleaning. All three have the blue diamond paint intact. 4. a very pretty big jade Shaeffer's pencil, excellent colour and undented. No brassing that I can see. Engraved with name. It works. I'm asking $65 each for the pens, including priority mail. $40 for the pencil, mostly because of the excellent condition. Usual terms: You send money, I send the pen (or pencil) and if you're unhappy, send it back reasonably promptly in unaltered condition and I'll refund your money. I've made a pretty good scan of all four. E-mail me if you'd like to see it. And as always, I'm open for trades. Mostly, I'm looking for OS and Maxima Vacumatics. Thanks, Larry Jones

Visconti's current line (as listed in the 2000 FPH catalog) includes a stylograph with the model name Copernicus. It's a crescent filler, a design mate to the 1996 limited-edition Copernicus fountain pens. Rotring also makes, or has recently made, a very inexpensive stylograph (see: http://www.stylophiles.com/rotringstylo.htm).

Your answer already appears in this frame. Send it to the repair shop listed but expect to be charged for the work. This is Mont Blanc's attitude and M.O. which, fortunately, is relatively-uncommon in the industry.

Waterford pen
      7/19/2000:  Larry Shelton
Scott, history lesson for Wednesday night, it's Waterman, not Waterford. It's not cup-cap but Clip-Cap. The cut outs you describe would make it what is commonly called a filigree. The "0" means the filigree is gold filled. If the "0" was absent the pen would be solid gold. The first "5" means gold cap and barrel. The second "5" means it is a lever filler. The "2" is the nib size. One in excellent conditon my guess value could be around $300 dollars. Dents or dings probably take off $100. Near mint New York price, around $495. Filigree/Overlay pens were made from the mid teens to the early 1930's. To bad it's not a Waterman #494 Bayleaf. If that was the case I would be happy to call it a Waterford and make you a generous offer!!!

waterford pen
      7/19/2000:  scott
Please help I am trying to get info on a pen that belonged to my grandfather. It was given to him in the 1930's by his rich uncle. It is a waterford pen that is black. There is a clip gold apparently on the cap. It says cup-cap and has a little baseball next to it. Inside the round circle it says ideal. It also states on the clip 18Kt filled. The very bottom of the pen has the numbers stamped 0552.As stated the pen is black but it is nearly covered in gold. It has little triangular patters cut out of the gold exposing the black. I wastold this is a waterford pen but have no idea. How much is it worth when was it made and any other info would be great. Thank you very much . I can be reached at sschlecter@aol.com

Vintage MB Markings
      7/19/2000:  Stephen Lam
Bob, I have a few old MBs myself but they do not have the first symbol you mentioned. However, if it is just an arrow, it could indicate the direction in which the blind cap should be turned !?

Vintage MB Markings
      7/19/2000:  Bob Sachs
This appears on the blind cap of my vintage MB 142: "M <----", only the < is only the top half of that and the horizontal line is solid. Does it mean anything other than a medium nib? The actual nib is an oblique. Also, on the back side of the clip (underneath the clip where you need a mirror to see it) are "XX". Anyone know what this might mean? Thanks for the help.

Parker 75
      7/18/2000:  Larry Shelton
Shlomo, the Parker 75 you refer to was called the Keepsake and was produced from 1967 t0 1968. It had a completely smooth finish done in sterling silver with the idea it could be engraved for gift giving. Tough pen to locate today and the price will be reflective of that. Last one I knew of was Berliner in NY. Also check out www.Parker75.com for a picture and more info.

Coronet Clip
      7/18/2000:  Bob Miller
I was very fortunate and stumbled across a gold filled Wahl-Eversharp Coronet in an antique shop in north Georgia. I wasn't familiar with this particular pen, but I could tell it was a quality writing instrument. I'm almost ashamed to say that I paid the princely sum of $6.42 for the pen. It wasn't until I got home and pulled some of my books out that I discovered just what I had. You could have knocked me over with a feather. Anyway, the gist of this story is that the pen is in very excellent condition except for the fact that the clip is missing. I have been told that locating a clip for this pen is almost impossible, but the clip from an Eversharp Pacemaker will fit. The Pacemaker clip will probably work, however, there are 2 different clip types. They both look the same, but one has 4 tabs while the other has only 2. The Coronet has four tab holes. It also has to be gold filled or plated at least). If anyone has a beat up Pacemaker that will work (or a Coronet cap) I would be very greatful. Thanks, Bob Miller

Red Dwarf
      7/18/2000:  David Less
I did try filling it but it seems to bleed a little at the threaded cap. I did not screw it in tight so I'll try Stephens method first. By the way the identical Kearney's Red Dwarf pen with the same imprint is on sale at the moment on the New York Vintage Pen Web Site, they also have the original box. David

David's Red Dwarf again
      7/18/2000:  Stephen Lam
I don't think it is necessary to apply any sealant on the screw thread after filling an eyedropper, any eyedropper including a stylo. These pens/stylos are designed to hold ink simply by screwing the section back in tight. Applying rubber cement makes the next filling more difficult than it should have been. Of course, if you only want to ink it once............

Eye Dropper Fillers
      7/17/2000:  Paul
Dave, When you fill your stylograph pen be sure to coat the threads with a sealant to prevent leaking. Some recommend wax, some teflon tape, and others prefer silicon grease. I have found that rubber cement provides a good seal and is easy to open up latr. Lots of luck, Paul.

Pelikan Level flex nib
      7/17/2000:  Bruce Robinson
Kyle's recent posting of a Pelikan Level L5 for sale inspired me to check again if the nibs on the Level L5 can be interchanged with those from the cheaper L65 model. The reason is that the cheaper model has a much more flexible nib, which I prefer. Transcontinental advice today from Nicole Jathe in Pelikan in Hannover said the nibs pull out, and are interchangable. Apart from very sore fingers from removing and replacing two nibs, the interchange has been very successful. I am sure the purists would not call the L65 nib "flexible", but it is much nicer to use than the stiff nib on the more expensive Level. My guess is that the L65 steel nib is better IMHO even than the gold nibs in the top range L5 pens, but I have not checked.

Red Dwarf and Stylos
      7/16/2000:  Michael Pantano
The Red Dwarf (et al) being discussed are stylographic pens. INdeed, the design in some ways predates the modern fountain pen. The MacKinnon pen, made in Canada, was one of the first successful ones. It dates back to the 1880's or 90's (not sure as I sit here writing this). Many other companies made similar pens at about this same time. I said they predate, in some ways, the fountain pen. What they did early on was provide a way to store ink in the pen and control its flow onto paper ..... unlike the dip pen, which did not store ink onboard. The fountain pen had to wait until the feed was developed, some years after the first stylos were already out there. Stylos were more common in later years, mainly in the Ink-o-Graph pens. But other manufacturers made them, too. I have a Jade flat top Good Service stylo I'd guess to be late 1920's. Nice pen. Lever filled with a conventional sac. Architects continued to use stylos as "technical pens" (Kohinoor, Rapidograph, etc) right through the 1980's and they are probably still made (CAD drafting notwithstanding). As to value and collectibility, the early stylos are certainly collectible, but not as prized as some of the similarly style/similar age open nib pens. Any of the recognized pen books have more details on this history. ~Michael~

I have a red stylographic pen that could be a twin of the Kearney Red Dwarf. It's called the Red National in pencil and it was made in Denver, Co. I have another one in black called the Independent. From what I've seen of these stylos, the seem to come from around the late 1800s' and turn of the century.

David's pen is a stylographic pen. I have quite a few of them and they are easily available in UK flea markets. Having said that, a stylo in red hard rubber is I suppose rarer than one in black or mottled materials.

Red Dwarf
      7/15/2000:  David Less
I recently bought an old box of dip pens and found among the various pens and nibs a strange looking object I assume is a pen. It the same colour as the Parker Big Red but it is only 4 inches long. The mechanism is really odd,at least to me, There is a very thin needle like wire that is attached to a spring, this wire sticks out from a small hole in the tip of the front housing, it writes by depressing the wire into the housing, in doing it releases the ink. It was produced by J.KEARNEY & Co. LIVERPOOL and is called "KEARNEY'S RED DWARF". The pens in the box were from the 20s or 30s and if this pen dates that far back, it may be an early attempt at producing a pen to compete with the fountain pen. On the other hand it may just be a later pen design that never made it. I am curious to know if anyone has any knowledge of such a pen. It can be viewed at http://www3.telus.net/dosher/KEARNEY3.JPG As always any help would be appreciated. David Less

Mystery pen
      7/13/2000:  Richard Binder
I have a smallish (4 1/2") no-name fountain pen that the folks at FPH couldn't identify any better than I can. There's a pic of it on my Web site: http://www.mv.com/ipusers/binder/pens/ Click on "Vintage Pens" - scroll to the bottom of page 1 and click "more>" - the pen is the first one on page 2. I recently saw an auction on eBay for a pen with repousse metal overlay, with a clip that appeared identical to the clip on my pen, with the same beveled V shape at the top and the same diamond-shaped face. The rounded black top of the cap also looked to be a match. The seller identified his pen as a "Zephyr," but it's not a Parker Zephyr. Anyone want to take a shot at identifying my pen? No prize except a warm thank-you... Please respond via email - I don't have very many chances to visit PenLovers.

Thought I'd share a scan of a very unusual Parker. Believed to be a prototype that did not make it to production. Side by side with a Parkette DeLuxe you can see that they used the same machining for the faceting (both use 12 sides) They are about the same size and can be interchanged barrel/cap. Main difference is that the Parker is a button fill. Note the art deco band and the swirl pattern. The Parkette is turquoise (not green) and has the 2 tone nib. For a view of the scan, go to:members.aol.com/Ksmoot27/pkproto.jpg

Pilot Fountainpen
      7/12/2000:  Rob M.
I have a Pilot Fp. It's black and a leverfiller. The cap has a chrome clip and band, and two tiny holes in it. It's 13 mm thick and 59 mm long. The barrel is 112 mm long and 11 mm thick. It is marked "PILOT" then "the pilot pen","MFG.CO.LTD" then "made in japan. The nib is chrome i think and is engraved: best in the world, pilot, made in japan, (2). I'd like to know when it was made and of what material. It is a bit dirty and i'd like to clean it. Also the rubber sac ( if that's what's holding the ink ) doesn't function anymore. Could i repare this? Thanks, Rob

Well were back after twelve hours of being in technical cyberspace. Yup, pushed some wrong buttons around 2 in the morning and the server didn't like it much. Needless to say were back on the web. I've archived the June Bulletin Board posts, you will find them in the Bulletin Board Archive. By archiving more frequently (once a month) this helps the Bulletin board to load faster. We'll try to keep everything running smoothly now. Dean

Cartridge Ink Clogging?
      7/11/2000:  James Marshall
Hi, I have a small problem and I was wondering if anyone here has had similar problems and/or knows how to solve it. The ink in the cartridge for my Waterman Phileas fountain pen seems to have a tendency to clog up. The first time it happened, I just cleaned out the nib and put in a new cartridge. Recently though I noticed it again. The ink is thickening up inside the cartridge or something. When the ink gets into the nib it flows OK, but it takes longer to get the ink there and it doesn't appear to move freely within the cartridge. I also have a Namiki Vanishing Point fountain pen and I use it about as often as the Waterman. They're both exposed to the same weather, environment, etc., because I carry them around together. The Namiki ink seems to be fine. I don't always use them regularly, but usually when I use one I try to make sure I also pick up the other and use it a bit so that I keep ink flowing through both pens. I'm using the brand name ink in each pen, BTW. Does anyone know why the Waterman ink tends to clog in the cartridge while the Namiki ink seems to be just fine or have any solutions for avoiding the clogging? I'd appreciate replies by e-mail because I can forget to check web message boards. :) Thanks in advance, any help would be appreciated. (P.S. -- apologies if this appears twice; my connection got dropped as I tried to send it so I'm sending it again. I don't see the first attempt, so hopefully this will only appear once.)

Ink Flow- on OMAS 360
      7/11/2000:  Jay Lamba
I have purchased an OMAS 360 with an EF nib. The problem is the flow is so heavy the line width is closer to a medium and I would like it to be sharper? How does one reduce flow? I have never taken an Omas apart. I am ordering OMAS ink to see if it is thicker. I would appreciate any suggestions and where I could get pen diagrams to work on the pen. (without breaking it!) thanks for any suggestions- Jay

Some while ago I posted a description of a different clip cap on a Parker Duofold Red Senior and it was suggested that I compare the cap top with another Duofold Senior. My question is, does anyone know of any other manufacturer that made a clip cap with the identical internal design as the Duofold. David

Flea market report & Parker history trivia
      7/9/2000:  Len Provisor
6:00 am at the gate with a pocket of cash and high hopes for early-bird treasures. Walk briskly while trying to look nonchalant to my favorite "pickers" got me a .4. grey vac "51" lined sterling cap in remarkably nice shape, a '47 Demi with a perfect lined GF cap, a "ho-hum" Demi set but in a great fabric "51" shell box with the gold seal and purple ribbon. A Duofold Sr. red plastic, reasonable good shape, and a real neat clear demo "Ink O' Guard" 1930's, looks like a Vacumatic but has more clear cap/barrrel and narrower striped black laminations, piston filler and the nib/section unscrews. The best find was a "51" Flighter set without the gold metal band on the cap. No dings, unused clear sac, excellent shape and "reasonable", since one pen alone recently sold for $500. Perhaps a prototype or very low production from 1948 or after. That made my day. I was just as excited to find a book Howard Pyle's (famous American artist and illustrator, teacher to Andrew Wyeth)Book of the American Spirit. Early American history, as i flipped thru the illustrations, I came across the description of the Colonist's first fight at Lexington April 19th, 1775 where "38 Minutemen, under Capt. Parker, who said to his men, "Don't fire unless fired upon: but if they want war, it may as well begin here." Seven killed, nine wounded...but we eventually won the war. The Parker family, of Parker Pen fame, has a long and distinguished history. William Parker arrived in 1635, one of the original settlers of Hartford, CT. The home he built in 1645 is still standing near Old Saybrook. I'm looking for a book on Parker-family history, "Family records Parker-Pond-Peck 1636 - 1892" written by Edwin Pond Parker. Now you are all the wiser on Parker history than before. Off to take a nap.

Re: o ring replacement

Hi Mike McKeehan! I'm also am new at fixing snorks and did my first one just a few days ago. The old o ring was easy enough to remove with a safety pin, and I put a new one back in with a toothpick. No special tools were required. I did find it handy to have an inspection light to see what kind of screwdriver I needed to get an the gasket underneath the blind cap. I got one at ace hardware for about ten bucks. It attached to the end of a maglight. Hope this helps.

Question about Mont Blanc Pen
      7/9/2000:  Stephen Lam
Nice pen. You should be able to find out the list price from any decent pen shop, or the stationery section of a large department store. If you are considering selling it, please note that many pen collectors can get good discounts off the list price, some up to 50%. The 18K nib is not much different, in terms of price from a 14K.

Question about Mont Blanc Pen
      7/9/2000:  George
I own a brand new Gold colored Mont Blanc Meisterstuck No.146 w/18k nib that I am considering selling. I have been researching online and have not been able to find any information about this particular pen. All 146 pens that I've seen are either Black or Burgundy in color and come with 14k nibs. This pen is gold in color and has a "roughed" pattern (as opposed to the gold "pin-striped" versions. Is there anyone out there that might provide any information as to the model and/or worth of this pen? Please refer to URL to view : http://www.geocities.com/cgg12/Mont_Blanc.html Thank you for any assistance.

Waterman Refills
      7/8/2000:  Mike
Try the Pilot G-2 Gel refills. They come in XF(0.5), F(0.7) and M(1.0). I use them exclusively in my Waterman Phileas Rollerball and I think they're the best rollerball refills available. They are also made of clear plastic so you can always tell how much ink is left. I get the XF from Levenger's but the F an M are available at your local Wallmart or equivalent. I use mine everyday, all day and get about 1 month per refill. Give them a try - they're good and cheap.

Waterman refills
      7/8/2000:  Mark Anderle
I've always been disapointed by how little time Watermen rollerball refills last and switched to pelikan refills. Another good subsitute is Eversharp rollerball refills, they last and have a good deep color.

While I'm on the subject of Cliff Lawrence
      7/8/2000:  Larry Shelton
Several months back I needed a nib for a beautiful old A. A. Waterman filigree I recently had acquired. I must have called at least a dozen folks around the country but nobody had it or in the size I needed. A phone call to Judy Lawrence and three days later I had my nib.

Sheaffer and Parker Repair Manuals
      7/8/2000:  Larry Shelton
Several folks have inquired or commented on reparing Sheaffer pens. Can't help with the repair but I might be able to steer you toward an expert in the field with three books to his credit. Cliff Lawrence of the Pen Fanciers Club down in Dunedin, Florida has been in the hobby since around 1977. His Sheaffer Manual covers 50 years of pens. From lever fillers to Snorkels with 200 illustrations, 58 pages. Parker Manual 1 covers Parker repair up to the 51, 180 illustrations and 58 pages. Parker Manual 2 covers later model 51's up to the 75, 150 illustrations and 58 pages. Manuals are $9.95 postpaid. Cliff produces 4 times a year the Pen Trading Post which is a listing of vintage pens for sale. Membership is $20 a year. I'm not sure he'll sell you the manuals without membership but a phone call or email couldn't hurt. Actually $20 might be well spent. Cliff does from time to time offer parts for sale. The last issue of the Trading Post offered Duofold clips, sections, blind caps, and inner caps for various models. How about 36 Wahl feeds in mint condition. Cliff or Judy at 727-734-4742 or email penfanc@aol.com.

decadence
      7/8/2000:  scaupaug@aol.com
No pens are out except MB. << http://www.clearsail.net/~forrest/>> I collect pens with complete abandon. My daily writing pens are almost always Sheaffer's, but I'm guilty of collecting just about every brand, price level, era from the 1870's to the 1990's, and regions (USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, Russia, England, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Turkey, Israel, India, China, Arabia, South Africa, Brazil, Korea, any place where pens are made or once were made!) :-)

bfuld@aol.com
      7/8/2000:  Sheaffer Nibs & Feeds
A point of information--I have a number of early Sheaffer Lifetime Pens. I noticed that there are at least four types of nibs, and three types of feeds. The early nibs say "Sheaffers Lifetime Pen" These nibs come with the non serrated feed. The next nibs say "Sheaffers Lifetime" with "Reg U.S.Pat. Off" in small letters at the base of the nib. These come with the non serrated feed, and the flat serrated feed. Then come the numbered nibs. These nis seem to have two different size stampings. On the later model flattops the feed changes to a triangular shaped bottom with serrated lines running from side to side. Please don't take this as fact. It's only my personal observation. These are generalities. Sheaffer assembled pens, not collectors items, so anything can be correct. Also, pens were repaired and parts were changed at that time. Allan

re: Testing New Pens
      7/8/2000:  Waco Johnny D
On the point about poor performance with the first cartridge, God only knows what slime the manufacturing process leaves behind in the guts of a new pen. Standard procedure should be a thorough rinse with a EXTREMELY-weak solution of soap and water (say, a drop of liquid laundry detergent to a pint of water) that is forced though the guts of the pen with the converter. Then the nib and section should be dried off, and only then a cartridge fitted. Not only does this clean out any crap from the factory, it also leaves behind traces of soap which will assist the ink in wetting the new feed. I realize this isn't possible in a retail brick-and-mortar venue, but nevertheless it often is required to get an accurate impression of how the pen will behave after the break-in period.

re: Testing New Pens
      7/8/2000:  Waco Johnny D
Before testing ANY new pen, whether dipping or filling, the very first thing that should be done by the prospective purchaser is an examination of tine alignment with a loupe. A significant percentage of today's new pens come from the factory with misaligned tines and there is no reason to assume that a retail dealer is going to align every unit that comes through his place, or that someone who's handled the pen before you hasn't done something to cause a misalignment.

In summary, don't ever discount a pen just because a particular sample isn't smooth; it may involve only a 30-second fix.

Sheaffer O-ring question
      7/8/2000:  Ross McKinney
Since Frank Dubiel isn't here, I'll say what many of us know. The answer on how to change the O-rings is in his book on fountain pen repair. The best source for the book is probably to buy it from Pendemonium.com, who might also have the O-rings. If Sam doesn't have rings at Pendemonium, O rings are available from Nathan Tardif (scaupaug@aol.com). Tool wise, I use dental picks to get out the rings. Another good source for all things Sheaffer is Father Terry Koch, who has a nice small manual of Sheaffer repairs as well (fatherterry@usanet.com, I think). Good luck!

Collection focus
      7/8/2000:  David Kaplan
It's hard for me to keep to the focus. It's similar to trying to control the addiction. But, I'm being good. I like the idea of a major focus and a minor focus (how's that for a cop out). I think for me the major focus would be the vacs, red ripples, dorics (and other Wahl deco types). But I've yet to define the minor focus. I try to be sure I can write with all of them unles they are very rare or MIB. I do have about 6 modern pens which I really like but vintage is definitely it for me.

Scheaffer Snorkle O-ring replacement
      7/8/2000:  Mike McKeehan
Being a novice collector and obsessive tinkerer, I have tried to figure out the techniques and or tools required for replacing the O-rings and gaskets in the Scheaffer snorkle filler system.I would very much appreciate any knowledge anyone would be willing to share.

Variety
      7/8/2000:  Don Anderson
I've got Parkers, Watermans, Sheaffers etc, but what excites me the most? I like the well made odd and unusual. If no one has heard of it before and It's not junk, I love it. My favorite oddity is miniature pens. National made some beauties in colors that rival anything I've seen from any other manufacturer. Lapis, Coral, Jade, you name it the minis have it. My favorite daily user is a 1940's lever fill Sheaffer 1750 with Triumph nib, a Parker Flighter, and a Namiki Vanishing Point.

Collecting focus
      7/8/2000:  Bill Riepl
Well, I guess I'm trying toride both sides of the fence! If that isn't stretching the metaphor too far..... I have two main foci for my "collecting", piston filler MB pens, and any Parker Vacumatic made in the Gold Pearl color celluloid. Of course, there IS the third arm of the triumverate, the "user" pens. These are those pens that I buy primarily to use, and don't really fit into any catagory, although I am finding that stub and OB nibs tend to predominate, mainly for the beneficial effects on my humble handwriting. Some pens in this group include such widely diverse creatures as a GF cap and barrel Skyline, Visconti Titanic, Montegrappa Cosmopolitan Baroque, Delta Nautilus, Yellow Visconti Kaleido, Parker Burgundy Vac three band lockdown filler, Large OMAS Ogiva, and the most recent additions, thanks to a great deal offered by a fellow collector, a Waterman #7 Ripple, and a Sheaffer OS Balance in basic black. So, this way, I can have my cake, and eat it too. With a "focused and disciplined" collection, and then a big happy bunch of pens that are just plain great to write with.

Testing New Pens
      7/7/2000:  Will Thorpe
I went to Colorado Pen Company to look at the new Parker Millenium. Nice looking. Flat Top with chased herringbone pattern, medium nib. They said "would you like to dip it?" I did and it was smooth. I said "can I try it with a cartridge" (I remembered the previous posts here about testing new pens and what dealers wold and would not do). They stuck in a cartridge and I proceeded to write. The pen skipped, had trouble starting, changed to a different color ink, same problems, changed paper, same problems. Nope, I didn't buy the pen. I had looked at a Cartier medium nib black ribbed resin earlier and they asked if I'd like to try it with a cartridge. I did, great flow, slightly wet writer, pretty smooth (but not as smooth as an OMAS medium IMHO, nor is the line as thick). Fairly heavy pen but not as heavy as the gold ones, which are really heavy. I guess the point is ask if you can try the pen, especially cartridge pens. Some dealers will some won't.

Domestic Pens
      7/7/2000:  Michael Pantano
Like most that have posted on this topic so far, I also collect US pens almost exclusively. I expect that's largely a matter of availability, in that I live in the US. Even whn I travel abroad, I tend to find a lot of old US pens. The exception was in Singapore, where there were pens from everywhere. My collection (as opposed to my accumulatta) has a few different focuses (focii?). I collect pen and pencil sets of the larger sizes or more significant pens. This crosses the manufacturer lines, but I find I have more Parkers and Sheaffer's than anything else. - availability and sheer numbers, no doubt. I also collect 51's and Wahl Eversharp metal pens (flat tops, Skylines, and even Venturas). ~Michael~

U.S. Pen Collecting
      7/7/2000:  Will Thorpe
Frank, (remember Frank?) always said "collect what you like." I do. I collect Esterbrooks. I also collect Wearever Fairy Gold (sometimes called Merlins as in the magic wand), the ones with the metallic threads in the plastic. I probably have a dozen or so Sheaffer Juniors. a few Wahls, a DIXIE or two, UNIVER, CRAIG, WASP, Diamond, etc. I prefer lever fillers. oddly enough the only Parker I have is a 1942 Debutante.

US Pen Collecting
      7/7/2000:  David Kaplan
Interesting. I find myself leaning heavily toward Parkers because I love Vacs. But, I also love Waterman ripples and Wahl Dorics and Gold Seals. Quite the opposite, with one exception I don't collect Sheaffers.

Oddball "WTB"
      7/7/2000:  Michael Pantano
Okay, here's one for ya ..... Does anyone have a J-clip with the name "Johnson" on it that they might wish to part with? I bought the pen in hopes of restoring it for my step-daughter, who's last name is Johnson. Alas, the clip was just this side of powder and is now a broken stump in the cap. Too bad, because it is a gorgeous, clean, clear oversize Jade flatop with a large Warranted 8 nib. Can anyone help me? E-mail back channel if you can. Thanks! ~Michael~

US Pen Collecting
      7/7/2000:  Ross McKnney
I suspect the issue is modern vs. vintage. I collect vintage Moore Pens - born in Boston. Most of my new pens are imported - the exceptions are a Bexley, a Sheaffer Balance, a Chuck Swisher - and the rest are imported (including a Parker Sonnet). The industry overseas seems to be more alive.

US pens (besides Parker)
      7/7/2000:  Andy Rothman
Allan -- I collect many brands other than Parker, including Sheaffer, National Pen products (Gold Bond, Diamond Medal, etc.), Conklin and Wahl. Interestingly, when I started collecting, I tried for brands other than Parker, but my collection somehow wound up with lots of Parkers anyway. Seems there are just more of them out there, although I still look primarily for other brands.

us pens (besides parkers)
      7/7/2000:  sherman barnes
The majority of my collection (as opposed to my accumulation - I have both) is sheaffers. I have other u.s. brands but sheaffers are my mainstay. So, yes, maybe most are lurkers like me but I actually prefer sheaffers.

Domestic (US) Pen Lovers

Japanese lacquer pens
      7/6/2000:  scaupaug@aol.com
Aaron said: "Yes I can buy a knockoff or even a economical model, but it doesn't substitute the real thing. " If you want to pay $800 and more for the same thing, be my guest. The pens being produced today in the higher range are identical to the Japanese versions of the 1930's, only those from the 1930's are far less common today due to the passage of time. Many Nara and Tokyo pen manufacturers from the 1930's are no longer in business today, but that makes their Japanese lacquer production no less genuine. Some of the pricing of the intricate models is justified, but the plain colored lacquer models I have seen priced in the hundreds to thousands are simply overpriced. The pens listed for sale in the same genre, and being VINTAGE was meant to prove that. Some are still available.

Japanese lacquer pens
      7/6/2000:  Aaron Forbes
" They are not all in the $1,500-$60,000 range!!!" ....Well yes..you get what you pays for. Japanese lacquer does not only constitute a type of pen painted in black lacquer or daubed with simplistic images a chimp could muster, but a highly developed art form that defies belief when you understand the skill , time and techniques that go into it. Yes I can buy a knockoff or even a economical model, but it doesn't substitute the real thing.

Japanese lacquer pens
      7/6/2000:  scaupaug@aol.com
The classic Japanese pen design, and I see more people discovering it. Just in case they are overpriced elsewhere, note that some are available from the vintage era by a variety of manufacturers from Nara, Kobe, Tokyo, etc... Anyone can afford one. They are not all in the "$1,500-$60,000" range!!! Safety ink shutoff mechanisms, eyedropper filled (same design found in the modern Namiki Emperor pens, lacquer ebonite pens made before the war, working and restored/shine. Same streamlined shape as the Namiki Emperor pens sold today. $65 each, eyedropper and shipping included. Earlier Japanese ebonite pens also available (over-under feeds, safeties, Onoto mimic pens from 1900-1920 as well as some later piston filled models - all in the $25 to $75 range, all ebonite). Other Japanese pens are also available - just ask for info. I even have another murex FS (like the Parker T-1).

1928....that was state-of-the-art construction for the Parker Duofold Corporate airplane. This was the pride of Geo. S. Parker, ex WW I Naval Pilot and a huge fan of flying machines. A huge 410 hp Wasp radial engine propelled this orange canvas-covered monoplane to a blazing 140 mph, able to leap mountains no more than 19,500 ft. Capacity was eight foolhearty or brave Parker employees, dealers or customers. This actual model aircraft is now available in perfect detailed reproduction. With an 18" wingspan, solid wood construction, over 30 coats of paint and hand detailed lettering. Two years research from actual model blueprints, and Parker family photo archives. Spinning wood prop and a satin black mounting base, where you can mount your own vintage Duofold desk pen. Best of all, the bases will be personally signed by Geoffrey S. Parker, great grandson of George S. Parker. What a great piece of Parker ephemera this add to your collection, not to mention the investment potential. This model will be shown at the August Washington, D.C. and November Ohio Pen Shows. SUBSCRIPTION ORDERS ONLY, no mass production. Manufacture is limited strictly to the year 2000. Namiki book
      7/5/2000:  Diane Luther
I just found this review on Namiki;the art of japanese lacquer pens posted on a website : By David Nishimura Pen collecting has come a long way since its beginnings some twenty years ago. Perhaps the greatest advance from then to now is the availability of books, magazines, and reprinted source material, making generally accessible the knowledge essential to appreciation and informed acquisition. Nonetheless, there remain areas where information is hard to come by, one of the most prominent being Japanese lacquer pens - among the rarest, most prized, yet least understood of collectible writing instruments. A newly-published monograph, Namiki: The Art of Japanese Lacquer Pens, should remedy this situation. The fruit of over two years' research and many more years' worth of experience, the book was written by Julia Hutt, assistant curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum and a respected expert in Japanese lacquerwork, along with Stephen Overbury, one of but a handful of international dealers specializing in high-end Namiki pens. Such a collaboration was essential, for decorated lacquer pens cannot be appraised in the same way as ordinary mass-produced writing instruments. Although some decorative schemes do recur, variations in interpretation and execution mandate that these pens be approached as one might a painting: connoisseurship is vital, as is a certain level of essential technical knowledge. As one would expect, the volume is heavily illustrated, with nearly 250 top-notch color photographs, including many finely rendered detail shots. Spectacular though they are - the "Masterpieces" section is truly stunning - they are also carefully chosen to educate the eye. Particularly useful is the clarification of the grading systems used by Dunhill and Namiki, a picture further filled out by the sections devoted to the Namiki workshop system. The range of pieces depicted is impressive, with many items from pen company archives and private collections published here for the first time. The artists and their techniques are also discussed in unprecedented depth. Many pen collectors will be surprised at the amount of time and labor lacquer decoration requires, not to mention the years of training - typically 30 years to achieve the mastery needed to execute a grade "A" piece. Biographical profiles of artists add another dimension to our appreciation of their work. The book is itself dedicated to one of the greatest of modern lacquer masters, Genroku Matsuda (1896-1986) - one of Japan's "Living National Treasures" - whose impact at Namiki as head artist and workshop master was second to none. The treatment of the companies and their founders is equally thorough. The authors were given full access to the records of Dunhill in London and Pilot/Namiki in Japan. All original contracts were examined, along with catalogues, advertising material, and internal company records. Among other things, this primary research has revealed that production of top-grade Namikis was limited indeed, with no more than 1500 such pieces made between 1925 and 1937. The assistance of the Pilot/Namiki firm was also vital for one of the most difficult and time-consuming areas of investigation: decipherment and identification of the lacquer artists' signatures. The resulting chapter will be the standard reference for the forseeable future, and for many collectors will be reason enough in itself to buy the book. Only 2000 copies have been printed. Although I understand why the publishers chose such a small run - a fine hardback produced to art book standards is an expensive production - I suspect that they may have underestimated the number of potential buyers. While the volume is not cheap at $175, serious collectors have always appreciated how quickly good reference books pay for themselves. Given the price level of fine vintage Namikis - upwards of $100,000 for the very best examples - the information that this book contains is an unqualified bargain. There is also bound to be significant interest from the many collectors of modern limited edition lacquer Namikis; not surprisingly, Alfred Dunhill has reserved a good part of the press run for its own clients, and much of the rest has already been spoken for by individual collectors, all without any extensive efforts at promotion to date. David Nishimura is an internationally-known figure in the world of pen collecting. An art historian by training, he is a former director of the PCA and a regular contributor to its journal, The PENnant. His website, www.vintagepens.com, has been a leading online reference for pen collectors since 1997.

japanese lacquer pens
      7/5/2000:  David Less
I read Bob Frank's post about Jananese Lacquer Pens and I have a question. As I often point out I am just learning about pens and I really enjoy all the help I get on Penlovers. I have a beautiful desk set in a brownish metallic lacquer, lever filler. All it says on the nib is "FERME" made in Japan. There are no other markings or names anywhere else on the pen. On the box there is a logo which consists of a small circle with a "W" in the middle and the words "The Ferme Pen - Stand". Any help is appreciated. David

re: Ink Jets/Fax Machines/Cartidges/et al
      7/5/2000:  Waco Johnny D
That explains the performance I'm seeing. Results were ok in the Sheaffer cartridge except over several hours the ink's ability to wet the cartridge walls actually got worse rather than better (I'm used to seeing the latter with FP ink). This morning I am seeing the same thing in a Waterman cartridge I refilled last night with the stuff. I had rinsed the cartridge fairly thoroughly about a week ago -- it had contained a 50/50 mix of Bexley green and water. The cartridge, however, still had a faint green tint from ink staining. When I filled it with the Dataproducts ink it looked as though the ink was doing a good job of wetting, but now, this morning, I can see there is almost no wetting at all, and if it were not for the little ball inside the cartridge I would have to shake the pen before writing to get the ink mass down to the section of the Laureat in which the cartridge is installed. So far I'm not impressed and will hang it up after the ink is gone from this cartridge.

WRT refilling inkjet tanks, I've been doing that for years with HP InkJets. Generally I get a quality level about 75% of a fresh ink tank which is fine for rough drafts and for stuff that isn't going to publication, which is the vast majority of what I print. Michael's explanation of the presence of more surfactants in FP ink aligns exactly with my experience of inkjet ink in FPs and FP ink in inkjet tanks, the latter which I tried only once because of the enormous mess it made (dripping from the tank as he said and then just refusing to drop ink with any consistency at all during printing).

Ink Jets/Fax Machines/Cartidges/et al
      7/4/2000:  Michael Pantano
Ink jet ink is very much like fountain pen ink. Indeed, I've heard tell that some of it is, in fact, fountain pen ink (Scrip is what I had heard) sold by the barrel to ink jet refiller companies. That's what I heard, but in some ways it smacks of "urban legend" to me. The difference (apart from viscosities, etc.), as has already been said here, is surfacants. Just as fountain pens need them in ink in ***minute*** quantities, they are anathama to ink jet printers. First, the ink may well tend to .... uh .... dribble from the cartridge, leaving a horrible mess on your printer's innards. Next, they may run or bleed when you try to print - particularly color printing, which is, in effect, mixing ink right there on the paper. It has been warned for testing ink jet ink in fountain pens, and that same warning applies in reverse to trying fountain pen ink in ink jet cartridges .... use an old printer that you can afford to screw up. ~Michael~

      7/4/2000:  Charlie
I apologize if I wasn't clear with my posting the other day. What I wanted to know was if any of you have refilled your inkjet cartridge, vs just putting in a new one. They sell kits that include ink and a syringe, so you can refill the cartridge used by a fax machine. This has nothing to do with fountain pens, I'm talking about refilling a cartridge for a FAX machine. You know, the cartridge that takes a liquid ink of some sort. Thanks a lot, Charlie

Ink-Jet ink in pens
      7/4/2000:  Bruce Robinson
My experience with ink-jet printer ink is that it needs a very small amount of surfactant (that's a fancy name for detergent) to work well in a fountain pen. Ink-jet droplets are designed not to spread on the paper, (to get the 300 dots/inch or whatever), but fountain pens write much broader by comparison, and the ink needs to flow through the feed and nib. So fountain pen inks have some detergent. A fraction of a drop of very diluted liquid detergent is plenty to add to ink-jet printer ink. One major advantage of ink-jet ink is that one can ideally create any colour, by mixing magenta, yellow and cyan. These are the three colours used in colour ink-jet printers, to make the 64 thousand colours or whatever they claim. I used some magenta ink from an obsolete ink-jet printer, and it worked well after the addition of a smidgin of detergent. Don't add very much at all, or the ink will run more than expected on the paper. Yes, I used an unloved pen for the trials.

re: Ink
      7/3/2000:  Waco Johnny D
Well, you piqued my interest so I went ahead and filled a Skrip cartridge with the stuff from Dataproducts (for an HP Deskjet). I assume you meant the liquid to refill inkjet tanks rather than powdered toner. I've been using the stuff for a couple of hours in a Sheaffer Student pen. It flows very well but doesn't appear to wet the inside of the cartridge as well as standard FP ink; however with the large diameter of the Skrip cartridge this doesn't appear to be much of a problem. I'll keep using the stuff until it runs out or until the feed dissolves and will report back here at that time.

By the way, don't even THINK of putting the stuff into a pen you don't want to risk being stained. It's nasty and I have the blackened fingers from an ink-transfer accident to prove it. It won't be out of my skin for days.

What ads? What banners?
      7/3/2000:  Laurent Hodges
The discussion about ads and banners baffles me. I have yet to see a single ad or banner on Penlovers Bulletin Board. I'm using the same link I always used. I don't really wants ads or banners, but I am intrigued: What are the rest of you doing to see them?

Advertising F pens.

I have a red mottled hard rubber pen which looks like it could have been made by Mabie todd since it looks so much like a Swan Swallow. Quality is very good with mottled section and feed. Imprint reads Made in England and also Drink tyFoo tea for indigestion. Probably an early advertising pen. Anyone can give me any info. on this pen? Thanks.

Railroad pens
      7/2/2000:  Sheldon Crook
I would like to find any fountain pens (no ball points, please), working or not, that carry the name, logo or insignia of any railroad, US or foreign. I don't know if they even made any of these but with the plethora of advertising ball points, I would think that some lines had their names put on fountain pens before ball points were invented. Thanks to all in advance for any info you can shed. Sheldon

My understanding is that Platignum pens were produced by the British company Mentmore as a budget line. Production started around 1927. Your's sounds like one of the early flat top models. Possible they're still around today. Anyone know the answer to that one?

You guys are so cool

Platignum
      7/1/2000:  David Less
Does anybody out there know anything about Platignum Pens from England. I have one with a stipe pattern on the barrel and a herringbone pattern on the cap. The bottom of the barrel is threaded so that the cap can be screwed onto the barrel when in use. It is a slim pen and resembles a waterman 52. I am retired and have only recently found Penlovers, I am a complete novice trying to learn as much as I can about my pen collection and I really enjoy all the chatter on the board, Ads or no ads, and greatly appreciate the help the experts freely give to beginners like me. Canadian Parker Challenger
      7/1/2000:  David Kaplan
Now that is has become a kinder and gentler board I have a question (I also posted to Zoss and iKonTalk so please just consider this seeking second opinions) I'm about to "do a deal" involving my Canadian Parker Challenger and I want to get my facts straight. 1. Does anyone know when Parker was producing the Challenger in Canada? This will allow me to date the pen accurately. 2. The pen I have is royal blue. The blind cap is black. The band, clip and "jewel" (or clip nut perhaps) is gold color. Is this a standard color for Canadian Parker Challengers, or is it somewhat rare? 3. If the pen were in excellent condition, what do you think the market price of the pen would be? I appreciate your patience. Happy 4th, David

PenLovers Bulletin Board
      7/1/2000:  Dean Tweeddale
It has been asked of me by many fellow Penlovers over the last few days to moderate and edit this boards content more strictly. Up to this point in time I haven’t done that as I felt that everyone deserves to be heard. However when the topics stray and get into attacking the character of people, enough is enough. I have been in contact with Frank and others off-line and even though we differ in opinions we have agreed that we can still get along and be friends. We all know that everybody has their opinion and is free to express it. However this is a Pen discussion board not a board to flame any persons character. I once went to a seminar to hear a very wise, wealthy, and aging businessman speak. One thing that I remember him saying and I’ll paraphrase here was the following: “All of our times to pass will come. Before you speak or act out against something or someone think about what you’d like your tombstone to say about your own character or actions. Then choose your words and actions carefully.” From this point forward lets keep the discussion on pens and pen related topics. You can email me and other’s offline your comments on other subjects. I will be removing any comments that I consider to not be relevant to the use of this board. Also repetitive commercial advertising will be edited from the board. Hope everyone has a great Holiday weekend, stays safe, and finds the one that could have gotten away. Dean

Snorkel O-ring
      7/1/2000:  Michael Pantano
Darrel, Terry Koch used to carry these, among lots of other items. I don't know his current address (no e-mail and he recently moved). Surely someone has his current address. By the way, in addition tot he o-ring, you'll probably need a point gasket for that snork. Non-working snorks are usually the result of a bad o-ring, but bad point gaskets can cause it, too. Change them both. The total cost for parts will be about a buck or two. Fr. Koch has those, too. One note of caution ... don't use the red rubber plugs he offers for Sheaffer's vac fillers. They deteriorate very, very quickly and are bother than help. ~Michael~

Help, I'm drowning and I need a Snorkel!
      7/1/2000:  darrell
My heart would go "thump thump" if I could find out where to get an O ring for the rear seal of a snorkel thin model. Is there some modern replacement available, or is it something I have to get from a specialist? If anyone could tell me where to get one I would appreciate it. Thanks!

RHR Filigree #20

I saw the picture of that pen on eBay, my heart went "thump!" I'm very near Chicago, I go to auctions and flea markets all the time....how close that may have been. My last heart "thump" was a few years ago at a local flea market when I picked up a Waterman BHR #20....for $3.00 !! "Thump ! Thump!"

RHR #20 Filigree
      7/1/2000:  Michael Pantano
I had some communication with the seller of that red 20 overlay. The reserve was $350. The seller found the pen in the drawer of some furniture he bought as a lot at an estate sale. Were it not for the internet, that would have been a real sumgai pen. From what I was able to determine, it was in quite good shape, too. ~Michael~
