Bulletin Board Format Change
      1/30/2003:  Dean Tweeddale
Hi everyone, I just wanted to let everyone know that this bulletin board will be shut down for posting messages on Thursday January 30th. The board will still be here for reading and then put into the Archive. It has been a long time coming and has been carefully considered, talked about, thought about, experimented with and placed on the back burner several times. But we have decided to change the bulletin boards look and format to a threaded board that should and will be easier to post to and to follow the messages on. To make the change over to the new board this one will have to be shut down and on February 1st the new board will be online for your use and enjoyment. We have tested the new board and believe that it will function much better than this the existing board. To kick this all off we will be having a grand re-opening of the Penlovers Bulletin Board with give-a-ways of pens, inks, and other pen related stuff each day for the entire month of February. Watch for the details on the new board February 1st. I’d like to thank everyone that used this board in the past for your continued support and look forward to welcoming you to the new Penlovers Bulletin Board. Dean

re: Sheaffer Repair
      1/29/2003:  Waco Johnny D
John's reply clued me that the pen in question might in fact be a plunger filler. If that is the case, the owner should be aware of two things. First, although I have enormous respect for Frank Dubiel and own both versions of his repair book, WRT plunger fillers his optional method of "plug stuffing" is incorrect. Don't do it, and don't let anyone who uses this method touch your pen. Demand that your repair man pull the original packing unit, rebuild it, and reinstall it. Second, since it appears you are new to these pens, NEVER draw back the plunger on a plunger-filler containing any ink. The proper way to empty a plunger-filler is to shake it dry or to let it sit point-down in a glass whose bottom is stuffed with a wadded-up paper towel. This is to avoid back-pressure on the rear packing unit. Has any plunger-filler suffered immediate death because someone emptied the pen by working the plunger? No, of course not, and no car ever died an immediate death by doing a second-gear burnout once a day either. But in both cases the service life will be greatly-reduced. Hope this helps. WJD.

re: Visconti Ragtime Black
      1/29/2003:  Waco Johnny D
  Hi Engi.

ENGI: It has written on the nib "14K 585 F"; does it mean that the nib is solid 14 k and the size of the nib is Fine?

Yup, that's it. 585/1000 = 14K/24K.

ENGI: Is a 14k nibe better of a 18k for a normal "user"?

Nope, gold content has absolutely nothing to do with "better" or "worse" with respect to general use.

ENGI: I noted that when I write, often the ink (I use Quink Parker) doesn't flow properly from the ink, I mean that when I'm writing, suddendly some letters are OK, while others (for example in the same word) reamin "blank", no ink. Which could be the problem?

This is typical of about half the Viscontis I've written with. Viscontis have problems, and that's fairly common knowledge. I recommend sending the pen to the manufacturer to be repaired. I consider Quink to be the best ink available, so we can rule that out as being a contributing factor. If you want to try a quick fix that may or may not work, try flushing the pen with a 50/50 mix of 409 cleaner and water, do NOT rinse the pen afterwards, then fill with Quink. This may help. 409 is a household cleaner common in the United States and contains wetting agents that help ink to flow more easily inside pens.

Hope this helps,
WJD

Sheaffer Repair
      1/29/2003:  John Maloney
Michael: Unless you have the proper tools, skills, and repair parts, I would not recommend trying to repair this pen yourself. See the current issue of Stylophiles available on this site for an article on Father Terry Koch, who is sort of the Yoda of Sheaffer plunger repairs. His charges are nominal, and his workmanship exceptional. For future reference, Frank Dubiel's repair manual is essential for gaining iinsight into the techniques used to repair these quirky pens. After reading Frank's book and working on numerous Sheaffer pens over the past eight years of collecting, I still run into a pen that will not yield to his or Father Terry's time-tested remedies. It is in the nature of the beast to be contrary, or as my friend Fred Krinke so succinctly says, "Sheaffer pens are over-engineered.". Amen.

Schaeffer won't drink

Visconti Ragtime Black
      1/29/2003:  Engi
Hello, I'm new to the fountai pen's world and I need your help. A couple of years ago I bought a Visconti Rabtime Black. It has written on the nib "14K 585 F"; does it mean that the nib is solid 14 k and the size of the nib is Fine ? Is a 14k nibe better of a 18k for a normal "user" ? I noted that when I write, often the ink (I use Quink Parker) doesn't flow properly from the ink, I mean that when I'm writing, suddendly some letters are OK, while others (for example in the same word) reamin "blank", no ink. Which could be the problem ? Which solution ? Thanks in advance for the attention and the time you may lose to answer to a neophyte. Bye Engi

Pelikan M805 and M405

Namiki Sansha Festival
      1/28/2003:  Gary
I have a Parker Blue Mosaic that I have filled but never used except to confirm that it's not going to be a daily pen for me. I am considering trading it, if it were for a Namiki Traditions Sansha Festival with medium nib, if someone out there has one. My wallet won't let me get a new one from Battersea. So it's maybe trade time. Second considerations might be a trade for an Aurora Optima, blue marble medium nib or the newest green or blue. Or the reissue of the 88. Sounds like I'm waffling. I am. It's guaranteed that the Namiki would have me jumping off and up and down.

Montblanc self-destruct
      1/27/2003:  DMJ
rob: You must have a new Montblanc. I have been carrying the same Meisterstuck around for the past 20 years. My two year old has tossed it across the room on numerous occasions since she was born, and aside from a bit of ink in the cap and a hairline crack in the cap, which I simply replaced, I've had no problem -- and we've got lots of hard tile floors here at home. Given your experience, no wonder the newer MB's have such a bad rep.

Montblanc integrity
      1/26/2003:  rob
I finally saw what happens when you accidentally drop a Montblanc onto a tile floor from a short height. A beautiful Meisterstuck . At least thirty pieces and some powdery residue. Surely there must be some work to be done on the chemical formula for this plastic wonder material. That is over 200 bucks down the the tube.

Pelikan "Styloscope", lim. edition
      1/25/2003:  Regina Martini
Pelikan latest limited edition, made for the famous watch company "Chronoswiss". Rare. Not sold by Pelikan. Limited edition of 999 pieces worldwide. Story behind that pen: Mr. Lang, owner of Chronoswiss, always falled in love with Pelikan pens. He used a Pelikan already since he went to school. Recently he signes all the certificates of his watches with a Pelikan 800 green demonstrator, which was produced for the american marked in 1994 only. Now he celebrate his 20th anniversary of Chronoswiss. He decide to introduce a pen: The "Styloscope". Of corse he choose Pelikan for a partnership. This pen is based on a 800 size pen. The quality is superb, even a Pelikan. This pen comes with a 18 carat 2-color Chronoswiss M nib. You get a nice zipper leather case with the pen...and now the best: you will get an additional nib in OB!! To switch the nibs is easy, you can screw out the complete nib section. If you like other nib sizes, you can use the standard 800 nib as well. All together a great writing instrument, which is unique! The trims are sterling silver. The design is typical Chronoswiss - the quality is Pelikan! We offer this pen for $750 incl. insured ship worldwide. A picture can be seen under: http://home.t-online.de/home/0220485509-0052/styloscope.jpg Thanks for looking.

His Nibs.com update
      1/25/2003:  Norman Haase
Hello all! Well, it's almost a week since returning from the Philadelphia Pen Show (sorry Eagles -- although not too sorry, as I'm a Giants fan!). It was a nice show, with a good turnout -- especially on Saturday, which apparently had as many visitors as both days last year. I decided to only bring a few Hero and Sheaffer models this year, with the biggest seller being the Hero 100. http://www.hisnibs.com/'100'_series.htm Instead, I focused more on the newer lines of Monteverde and Nettuno (since YAFA sponsored the show, it was the least I could do ). Surprisingly, at least to me, the Nettuno Dolphin that sells the best is the green (I always thought the orange would do better). http://www.hisnibs.com/dolphin.htm Of all the Monteverde pens I displayed, the most popular was the newest line, Practica, and in particular the Tiger Eye. http://www.hisnibs.com/practica.htm Squigglers are always good sellers at a pen show, even though no one believes me why I tell them that I was the model. http://www.hisnibs.com/squigglers.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Teresa and I both had a good time, although because she wasn't feeling that well on Saturday, we had to suffer through room service instead of going out to party! For those of you who've never been to one, a pen show is a terrific experience, where you'll see thousands of pens close-up, and meet plenty of folk who share our mutual addiction. Seeking Dittmer & Lehmann "Pelikan Schreibgerate"

Nib Scratchiness
      1/25/2003:  Lynn Brant
Other factors that cause nib scratchiness include super small debris between the irridium tips on the tines that cannot be seen even with a 10x loupe, and micro damage to the irridium surface itself. Fine nib smoothing paper can be a cure for both. One other cause of a scratchy nib... a nib that was just plain crappy to begin with and always will be .

BallPoint Differences
      1/25/2003:  Lynn Brant
Ink is not the only thing that differentiates ballpoints. The ball itself and the engineering of how the ball fits the socket that holds it as well as the ink all contribute to performance. The first Parker Jotters were not the "T-Ball" jotters that came later. The T ball was a reference to a new ball made of tungsten carbide. It was supposedly harder and smoother writing. Note too that rollerballs are really ballpoints as well. The difference is in the viscosity of the ink which is why (until recent capless rollerball refills) rollerballs had to be capped to prevent evaporation. The question on what differentiates fountain pen performance is too much to go into here. But it is interesting to remember that the fountain pen is an integration of many parts working together while the ballpoint is really just the refill - the rest of the pen is a mere holder.

re: Section Nipple Replacement
      1/25/2003:  Waco Johnny D
Ah, another chance to plug Frank Dubiel's repair book. Frank explains replacing sac nipples in his book, and it involves cementing a short length of tubing of some sort onto the section after first knocking out the nib and feed and making appropriate "real estate" available for the tubing to be inserted. "Da Book" is available online at many places, even from Martin up at Woodbin which also sells loupes and tools and sacs and so on. Da Book recommends preliminary seating with CA followed by a sealant, but my own preference is to use partially-evaporated orange shallac with the tube held into the section in the jaws of a small vise overnight. Whatever you feel comfortable with is fine, just keep in mind that CA is not waterproof and therefore not inkproof, and I'll wager that's why FD recommends the sealant over the CA. WJD.

re: nib scratchiness
      1/25/2003:  Waco Johnny D
Hi Dan. Yes, certain inks feel greasier than others, while at the other end some inks feel very "chalky." A greasy ink would be something like Private Reserve Tanzanite, while a chalky ink would be something like Pelikan Blue. But I would check the tine alignment on that scratchy nib before doing anything else. You will need a good 10x or higher-power loupe for this. Frank Dubiel's repair book has a decent section on nib adjustments, and the standard advice for newbies is to practice nib adjustments on pens you don't care about, before you attack those you value. There's a 99% chance your nib is scratchy because one tine is higher than the other, a simple 10-second fix for a practiced hand. WJD.

marlen pens
      1/24/2003:  Raj
Hi, I would like to get opinions on the new Maren 21 fountain pens.Any inputs? It looks great though!!

re, ballpoints
      1/24/2003:  Ben
Thankyou for your comments on ballpoints. One more question if I may. The ballpoints I've used, most of the above mentioned all have one thing in common, A ball? so, from your kind responces I take it that the ink is the only think that makes ballpoints behave differently? is that the same with fountain nibs, do they differ in performence with different ink viscousaties or types? (by performence I mean surface action or feel)

Section Nipple Replacement
      1/24/2003:  Mark
I was attempting to fix a pen before and in knocking out the feed I accidentally broke the nipple. How would I go about replacing it? I filed the broken nipple down to the section so it is flush. Hope it can be fixed, I really like the pen.

Waterman #7 color bands
      1/24/2003:  Len Provisor
To answer Jack's inquiry. Waterman #7 at $7.00 was introduced as a new selection of nibs around 1927, designated by color bands on the cap. The band colors indicatad : RED STANDARD a general correspondence nib, medium flex. GREEN RIGID a heavy manifold PURPLE STIFF-FINE for accountants PINK FLEXIBLE a fine tapered point ground for shading BLUE BLUNT an improved stub point YELLOW ROUNDED a ball shaped tip for a heavy line, and advertised as suitable for left handed writers. Also known was a GREY STUB for rapid italic writing The most desireable of these nibs today is the PINK which has a fantastic response for Copperplate and cursive shading. Some of these nibs are available from vintage dealers such as John Mottishaw or David Nishimura and can be fitted to any #7 pen.

Fountain Pen History
      1/24/2003:  Lynn Brant
I just read "Fountain Pen History" in the Stylophiles section. An interesting read although it seems more a history of writing styles than the fountain pen per se. For those of you that have not seen the Fountain Pen History page in the Resources section, take a look. I wrote and compiled this when I first launched PenLovers. Few people know what a long history the fountain pen really has, believing it came about only a hundred years ago or so.

ballpoints
      1/24/2003:  Mort
I always used ballpoints for work. the main reason is for the ease, and I write on carbon alot. But I became discontented with ball pens after I got into fountain pens. For years I used a 164 Mont Blanc, but hated the consistancy of the ink flow. Another thing I was not too crazy about was most ballpens seemed boring compaired to fountains, especially when it came to size and materials used. Thats why I always stuck with MB. My opinion has changed alot since the parker gel refil came out. I have them in all three MBs. And I just bought a Ancora Perla Ballpen that uses parker refils, at the same time I bought a Perla fountain. I think ballpen technology will continue to get better, especially since more companies in the fountain pen markets keep making nicer ballpens. Mort

Ballpoints

I collect only limited edition ball point pens. My main reason for this is that you can pick up a limited edition ball point for a fraction of what a fountain pen cost but the ball point will the same quality. There are so many awesome ball points on the market today. Montblanc, Montegrappa, Yard-O-Led, Parker, Visconti, Delta just to name a few and they all write excellent.

Re: Ballpoints
      1/24/2003:  Dean
The Parker Gel refills are really nice. Very smooth writing and I haven't had any that have leaked or dried out (until empty). Keep in mind though that they use gel ink technology which is much more free flowing ink than paste type ballpoints. You will be using these refills at the rate of about 4 to 1 compared to a regular ballpoint refill. That said, after using the gel type refill I replaced all of my ballpoint refills with them. Dean

I agree with what Lynn has written about them as I am a passionate ball point man like he is. I love to write with any of my stash of Parker bp's as like Lynn pointed out, all you need is a hand to write and just grab one to jot down your thoughts. Touche! I like my Parker bp refills and have yet to try the gell based ones.If I do, will I run the risk of gel based refill staining inside my bp or shirt? Jim

nib scratchiness
      1/23/2003:  Dan
Okay, new pen owner (first timer)here. I bought myself a Pelikan 250 (14C nib, fine)for my birthday. Meanwhile, my sister surprised me with a Levenger True Writer (steel nib, fine). The True Writer with the Levenger ink writes very smoothly and it feels great. The Pelikan 250, with a presumably better nib, seems a bit scratchy in comparison. I filled it with the Pelikan Brilliant Red ink (to be used to decimate students' papers!). The red ink seems watery compared to the black Levenger ink. On the page it seems thin. Do you (the royal you, meaning anyone who cares to respond) think the ink is causing the feeling of scratchiness? I suppose I should try the Levenger ink in the Pelikan. To do that, do I just empty out the red, then run cold water through it (by filling and releasing)? Thanks for your help.

re: ballpoint

There is a HUGE variation in ballpoint performance, from absolute junk refills containing what appears to be gray wheel-bearing grease mixed with sand, to outstanding refills such as Pilot/Namiki. I think some folks damn ballpoints based on a too-narrow and therefore unrepresentative sample. I use ballpoints a lot, for the same reasons LB does, plus I am trying to use up my gel pens of which I have accumulated quite the stash. WJD.

ballpoints
      1/23/2003:  Lynn Brant
Ballpoints have come a long way. They aren't nearly as "draggy" as they used to be. I think one of the main reasons most ballpoints "seem" harder to write with is that they are too damn thin for a man's hand. I have a fat Bexley ballpoint that is just as effortless to write with as a fountain pen. Maybe it has something to do with evolving through stages too. After many years in fountain pens I no longer care that much about writing with them. Truth is, if I have more than a few lines to write I'll be doing it with a computer. Ballpoints are easy to grab and uh... "jot" with. You only need one hand. And since there are many cool vintage ones with some penache, the rap on ballpoints seems less fair than it used to.

      1/23/2003:  steve L.
Ballpoints aren't "hard to use" in the sense of difficult, or requiring skill - they are hard to use the way a dull knife is hard to use, i.e. requiring a great deal of effort to use. Though they have improved over the years, the thick viscous (sticky) ink in a ballpoint requires pressure to produce a line, unlike a properly adjusted fountain pen, which will write just gliding over the paper. Hence, writing with a ballpoint produces tired hands. Rollerball pens, with smooth flowing liquid or gel ink, do not require the effort, hence less, or no, fatigue. But they don't give the same feel as a fountain pen, so they are less interesting to use than a fountain pen, but easier than a regular ballpoint.

re: Skyline Questions
      1/21/2003:  Lynn Brant
Almost all the Skyline pens were made with gold filled derbys. Gold filled derbys are found with caps of solid color plastic, striped caps, and moire caps. A pen might be worth $10 more with a gold filled derby as opposed to a plastic derby. But make sure the gold filled derby has no dings, they were prone to that. The rarest Skylines are those with plastic caps with horizontal grooves in them, and those with rare metal caps. The latter include stainless and sterling silver. I know of one with an aluminum cap. There is also one known white Skyline. The owner turned down an offer of $2,000 for it several years ago. Executives are worth more than standard pens, the solid black is by far the rarest executive. A few years ago a few Skyline collectors began a project to log and document every variation. We abandoned the project when the number approached 400.

re: Hard Rubber Repair
      1/21/2003:  Lynn Brant
You have the right idea in practicing with a pen you don't care too much about. But before you start you should decide whether you want this one broken or not. Old hard rubber is very brittle, much moreso than plastic. That's not to say you can't do it without breaking it, but the chances of breaking it are higher than they might be with another test subject. Consider picking up a few junky old no name plastic pens to practice on. But to answer your question, begin by soaking it overnight in plain water. Then use a section pliers (which you can make yourself) and something to get a good grip on the barrel with. Try twisting the section out slowly without rocking it laterally (that's what will break it). If you still can't get it out try some more soaking and if that doesn't work, you have a stuck section which can be gotten out but its not one to begin with. Worry about the discoloration when you get it fixed.

Hard Rubber Repair
      1/21/2003:  JACK
I have an old Wahl black hard rubber fountain pen, and in the interest of delving into the hobby of pen repair I figured that this can be my first one. I have an ink sack, and the sealant. I just don't know how to get the section off. As hard as I try the section wont budge and is preventing me from getting into the insides. So, does anybody out there know a simple and easy way of getting the section separated from the barrel? Also, as would be expected, my pen is pretty discolored. Is it possible to return the hard rubber to its original state? Thank you for your help. -JACK-

Re: New Parker 51
      1/21/2003:  Dean
Here’s my two cents on the new Parker 51. Both pens are very nice and have the same writing characteristics so there isn’t a need to compare quality that way. They are a remake of a classic style, the vintage Parker 51. Though they are not an exact replica, nor do I believe they were intended to be one. If I were to only get one of them I guess it would have to be the black one simply because the cap has the gold vermeil on it. That does not in my opinion make it more collectable though. If indeed there were less of the blue ones sold on the market then 50 years from now the blue would be scarcer and thus probably more collectable. These are good pens but not classics like the original ones; they are remakes using modern pen technology. I wouldn’t expect them to “increase in value” if at all for many years. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be in your collection, I have both in mine, but I have many vintage Parker 51’s also so I felt that they fit. Shop around and I’m sure you can still get a good buy on them. Then ink them up and if you still are using them at least once in a while five years from now, they were good to add to your collection. That’s my 2 cents. Dean

Waterman leaking
      1/20/2003:  Dave
I got a nice looking recent (2 years ago) Waterman that oozes and spits. It oozes around the entire rim of the nib, meaning that anytime my fingers go forward they are ink stained. It also spits ink into the cap when left alone, used frequently, lying down, point up, point down. It will sometimes go days without doing so, but sooner or later it spits. The Tombows with Rotring converters bought at the same time also leaked. The convertors had a molded ridge that prevented the sealing ring from seating - easily dealt with using CA. However, the same is not true of the Waterman. Any hints??

If they owed you money as a consignor, you may want to contact Sloan's, their attorneys, Linowes and Blocher in Silver Spring Maryland, or the US Bankruptcy Court District of Maryland (Greenbelt). There was an interesting long article on the Sloan's situation in the Washington Post Business section back in December that will give you a good reading on their history and problems. Good luck.

Dear Bulletin Board: I am attempting to find affordable paper of a suitable weight for writing with a fountain pen. I would use this paper as an everyday writing surface, to take notes, etc. It must be 8 1/2 by 11 inches, lined, and if possible perforated (two or three ring binder holes.) So far, I have only been able to find stationary paper, highly unsuited for my purposes. Any ideas? thank you for the help.

Hi, everybody. I'd like to known if someone can help me. I'm a new pen collector, and I've seen and enjoyed both models of the New Parker 51 (Black and Blue), but I'm still in doubt about them. I mean which one is more 'collectable', or significative for a collection? Is it true that the Blue one was launched in a smaller quantity? The Vermeil in the black model make it more interesting for collection? Since now, my thanks.

Philly Pen Show
      1/19/2003:  James Goodwin
Gentlemen LEt's start our engines! How was the Philly Pen show? I attended the Saturday pen show with my wife and 12 year old daughter who attended for the first time to see why Daddy collects pens. Got my daughter a Hero FP from Frank Dubiel and thanks for his patience. We got the ink at another vendor. Michelle loves writing with the new FP and I told her to keep it away from the dogs! My wife learned a lot of things such as the meaning of LE's. She was totally amazed that some LE's can cost as much as $5,000! Both of them learned how different nib sizes write differently and how dealers organize their sales to show pens from one era to another. That was a good teaching tool for me to use in explaining the various vintages of Parker Pens and the differences among them. For many of the show goers, it was the only time they do their pen shopping and satisfy their needs as it is harder to find what you want in the limited number of pen shops in the area. May the Philly Pen show prosper for many years to come at the Wyndham Franklin hotel in the city of Brotherly love. Jim As for me, I found a 1963 chrome plated Parker 45 Jotter BP for the bargain price of $20. THese are tough to find than the 1954 Jotters!

Nice Pens For SALE!!

Here's 5 items that should be interesting to someone out there in penland: 1) Parker Golden Vacumatic, Major 5" model, wonderful smooth medium-fine nib, diaphram replaced by former owner, no brassing, but some tarnish that simichrome or wenol will take right off, some teeth marks in the blind cap, but the plastic pattern hides them fairly well, and a couple of scratches. This will make a great user for one who wants to experience what these wonderful Vacumatics are all about. $42. 2) Sheaffer Gold Filled Lined Targa, no scratches or dents, fine 14 k nib, complete with convertor. $40, 3) Parker 75 Cisele, minor tarnishing will polish up nicely, proper medium nib, dimpled ended, with convertor, has one small ding next to clip point, a bargin at $66 4) Parker 51 Cedar Blue GF converging line cap, a few small cap dings, nothing major, the areometric filler is the early chrome style and it is flaking and somewhat corroded, the little black plastic end piece on the end or the unit is missing. No scratches on barrel or shell. The pen fills and writes nicely with a wet medium nib. $40. 5) Parker aerometric teal blue? Lusterloy cap, debutante medium nib, one small ding in cap. No scratches on barrel or shell. Fills and writes nicely. $32. All prices include domestic USA shipping. Insurance extra. First confirming email expressing intent to buy wins. re: 409 Primer for newbies
      1/19/2003:  Waco Johnny D
Dave, I never use 409 routinely, only if there's something wrong with a pen. 99% of the time I use it as a wetting agent to help break in new cartridge-filler pens equipped with those ^#@%! stupid little converters, which often are of such small diameter than ink won't move inside them properly without a 409-and-water rinse beforehand. When I DO use 409 it's usually half diluted with water. I would keep 409 and other household cleaners, especially those that cut grease, out of piston fillers, since piston fillers need a little slickness on the wall for the piston to move freely; on other boards' archives you may read about the occasional necessity to get silicone onto the walls of Pelikans whose pistons have begun to drag. In the vast majority of cases, pens clean out just fine with water only. If quality ink is used in a pen, and if the pen is used and stored properly, even plain-water flushes should be a relatively-infrequent requirement. Hope this helps. WJD.

409 Primer for newbies
      1/19/2003:  Dave
OK I know we can use 409 solution to clean nibs and feeds but I'd like to get some groundrules first. What's the recommended solution strength for modern pens ? When cleaning piston fillers do you just soak the nib/feed in the stuff or draw into the reservoir too ? How long do you leave it in there if so ? Or how long do you leave the whole section soaking if a cartridge filler ? How many repititions are necessary ? How many flushes to remove the stuff before refilling ? Thanks !

Cleaning an Old Pen
      1/17/2003:  Randy C
Most of these sheaffer cartridge pens will flush out fairly easily, but you may have to force some flushing water through. I have used an old cartridge filled with water/409 and then squeezed it forcing ink through the channel. I have also used an 'ear" syringe, used for cleaning childrens ears, or a turkey baster etc.

re: Cleaning an Old Pen
      1/17/2003:  Waco Johnny D
David, you're doing the right thing. Let the thing soak for a week in a dish. Change the water once a day. Use cool water only, not warm and definitely not hot. Patience is key when it comes to flushing improperly-stored pens. Now, if you get to the point where the water is clear the next day after a soak, and the pen still doesn't work, you are going to have to take it apart. If it's a cartridge pen, what could be tough because of the way Sheaffer cartridge pens are put together: TIGHT! Frequently I can't pull these pens apart without wrecking the feed combs, and I've been fixing pens since '95. In any case, it may be worth buying Frank Dubiel's fountain pen repair book from one of the online pen sellers (pendemonium, fountainpenhospital, and so on) just so you have a basic idea about how fountain pens work as well as some of the pitfalls of maintaining the buggers. I like to say that "Da Book" (as it is called amongst us) will pay for itself with the first pen you DON'T break because of something you learned from reading it. Hope this helps, WJD.

Cleaning an Old Pen
      1/17/2003:  David
I'm new to this board, so please forgive any newbie mistakes. I have an old Shaeffer's fountain pen that was part of a desk set. It's brown and looks to be in reasonable shape. However, it doesn't work when I put a new cartridge in. I have run lots of water through it, thinking there is some gunk in the works. But it seems like there is too much gunk (dried ink, I guess) that still remains in the inner workings of the pen. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, though I've never before taken apart an antique Fountain Pen. I love the feel of this pen and would love to get it to working. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!!

Rick asked about the MB Fitzgerald. I don't have one, but have used one (and also the others in the writer series). Typically, MB's limited edition pens write more smoothly and with fewer problems than their production lines, I think. The Fitzgerald is one of only three or four of this series that I think really reflects the writer's period and/or personality. If you're a FSF collector generally, I'd think this pen would fit nicely into your collection.

Valentines Cards (a little O/T)
      1/16/2003:  Saul
I am requesting help from the group. Some years ago, I had a list of special romantically named post offices that if you sent them your Valentines card inside of another envelope with the postage on the card they would give it a very special postmark and send it along to your sweetie. The list had about a dozen, including "Romance" and "Kissimee". Tragically, however, I can no longer find this list. I am not sure where I found it in the first place, but it *was* published somewhere in a newspaper. If anyone could point me there, I would be ever so appreciative! Thanks in advance.

His Nibs.com update
      1/16/2003:  Norman Haase
Hello all! Just a brief note, as I pack and prepare for the upcoming Philly Pen Show this weekend. I'll be electronically incommunicado for the next few days, so please understand if I don't reply to your inquiries or orders until the beginning of next week. Several of you who will be there have asked if I'll have any of the Hero 100s with me, and the answer is yes. I have about 20 fine-nibbed pens I'll be bringing, in assorted colors (black, green, gray and burgundy), so hopefully everyone who wants one will leave satisfied. http://www.hisnibs.com/'100'_series.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'll also be bringing a selection of NOS (new, old stock) Sheaffer Imperials. http://www.hisnibs.com/imperials.htm and the ever-popular Ivory Preludes: http://www.hisnibs.com/prelude1.htm and assorted Sheaffer Calligraphy products http://www.hisnibs.com/calligraphy.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'll have the full range of Monteverde pens, as well as the Nettuno Dolphin: http://www.hisnibs.com/monteverde.htm http://www.hisnibs.com/dolphin.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Squigglers and glue sticks will also be making their usual appearance: http://www.hisnibs.com/squigglers.htm http://www.hisnibs.com/sealing_wax.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So, I hope to see old friends, and meet some of you for the first time! Skylines
      1/15/2003:  Rick Kalamaya
One wonders how Emily, looking for Valentines, ended up here. I suppose that is more comforting than some clown looking for porn and ending up at a pen site. Thanks Waco Johhny D for your response. I also like a generous flow from my pens and will go ahead and install the bladder. And I have another question. I began my collecting career with rare books, specifically the work of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Now that MD has a Fitzgerald model in its author series, I am always interested in comments about the pen, its value and availability and so forth. So far I do not have a MB pen in my fountain pen collection just because it had become so trendy. But how do people like this pen? Rick

Aurora nibs
      1/15/2003:  David Kitching
Could someone point me to an online or UK outlet where I can buy a broader nib for the new Aurora fountain pen that I was recently given please? Thanks.

Parker Red Mosaic
      1/15/2003:  Esther
We have received another shipment of roller-ball pens, which we thought we'll never see again. As always, we have excellent prices on these, and on all other Red Mosaic items. We still have a few Special Edition 51's at a special price. Thank you.

Nichro nib
      1/15/2003:  Keith
Is there anyone out there with information on a "Nichro Tip 5" nib? I have one in a Waterman's #52 I just bought. I was going to replace it with the appropriate Waterman's nib but I dipped it and it writes like a dream! Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

re: Skyline questions
      1/15/2003:  Waco Johnny D
First of all, thank you for supporting Frank and buying Da Book. The breather tube is not required on this pen. The flow will increase a little bit without the tube, but there is no reason the pen can't be used that way. One of my favorite Skylines in my collection is a beat-up blue-striped one with a cracked derby and *without* a breather tube. I get a good thick wet line out of it which is how I like all my pens to write. Regarding gold derbys/caps, of course the more gold, the higher the value. Coupled with oddball colors, even higher. I am not aware of any Skylines that were made with plastic caps and gold derbys, but who's to say that the factory didn't make an occasional pen that way from time to time when they were running out of parts or sweeping the floor of dropped parts, or a repair man didn't assemble a gold derby from a crushed gold cap onto a plastic cap with a cracked plastic derby. Anything's possible. There were countless trim variants in the Skyline series, even solid-gold ones. The Executive series commands the highest price (as usual, the larger the pen, the bigger the $$). Skylines go from $35 at shows (working users with crazed derbys and loose-fitting sections) to several hundred. Hope this helps. WJD.

re: Montblanc Friedrich II
      1/15/2003:  Waco Johnny D
Your pen was made in 1999 and is a member of the "Patron of the Arts" series. It appears to be part of the "4810" version, which is slightly plainer than the "888" version. In unused/uninked condition you can expect to get somewhere in the vicinity of $2,000 for the pen, perhaps more if you auction it and let people fight over it, but if you do, be sure to set a minimum below which the pen will not be sold (there is an auction term for this but I don't do auctions so I don't know what it is). By all means do NOT fill the pen or you will instantly devalue it. MB limited editions are known for holding their value well and even increasing in value as long as they remain pristine. Regarding insurance, check with your insurance company, which may already cover you for some amount of "personal belongings," but ask them if a picture of the pen is required to make a claim. If you are not covered by your regular homeowners policy, see if you can purchase a rider that will cover you. If not, check with one of the many collectibles-insurance agencies which usually provide cheap coverage, some not even requiring formal inventories. Hope this helps. WJD.

Winter sale
      1/15/2003:  Susanna
Some Stipula Castoni still available on sale at WWW.PENS.IT , in the SALE section. Also some Etruria Sets - one of them is perfect for a Valentine's gift, with etched initials. Thank you for your visit! Susanna

Skyline questions
      1/14/2003:  Rick Kalamaya
I have two questions about Skylines. I have a pen which I have taken apart to install a fresh bladder. But the breather tube, a rather brittle item, came off. Can I just ignore it and put a new bladder on with good results from the pen without the tube? Or is there some magic way I can replace the breather tube. I don't see this in Dubiel's book. Secondly, I have the vague idea that Skylines with gold derbys are more valuable. Does this apply to ANY Skylines with gold derbys or to specific models? And how much more are they worth. Rick Kalamaya

I'm new at this and am having a problem. I bought a Waterman fountain pen refill converter to add to my Ici et La pen. It works OK, but I cannot srew the back end of the pen back on. re: bible pen refill
      1/14/2003:  Waco Johnny D
You could try to match the refill to what's listed at http://store.yahoo.com/yafapen/refills.html, or you might try asking Annemarie at inkpalette.com for assistance. Be prepared to provide *exact* refill measurements, preferably with a reasonably-good caliper, as you should always do when asking for assistance of this type. Annemarie may ask you to send her the dead refill so she can have a better shot at matching it. WJD.

Syracuse Pen Dinner. Tuesday 1/14/03 630pm Directions
      1/14/2003:  David I
Hi. We are on for dinner Tuesday nite 1/14/02 in Syracuse NY. Address provided below by Jerry Fine, but note that the turn onto Eerie BLVD, has much bigger signs as "ROUTE 5" than it does for Eerie blvd, which is a bit hidden. We meet at 630 pm. Bring pens. Bring Stories. I have some show and tell scheduled to head with me to Philly show later in the week. Appleby's. It's located on the North side of Erie Blvd. just before Heckinger Plaza in Dewitt, New York. Coming from the NY State Thruway, take Exit #35 to get off at; go around the traffic circle which is Carrier Circle and exit the circle at Thompson Road Southbound. (EDITOR COMMENT- DON"T GET ON THE FIRST THOMPSON ROAD EXIT WHICH IS THOMPSON ROAD NORTH- THat's a dead end. I went there last time by accident) Continue until you pass Bristol Labs on your left side-go over the next over pass and take the left at the next set of traffic lights. This is Erie Blvd. (Editor note- i recall several red lites until hitting ROUTE-5/Erie BLVD) East. Go up two lights, make a "u"turn and you'll see Appleby's on your right just after a MacDonalds and a Floorcovering store. (NOTE- if you spot the restaurant before overshooting, you can go into hechingers plaza before the restaurant and skip the U-turn) Good Luck-It's Really very easy and can be easily be seen from the street. J.Fine The phone for Appleby's is: 315- 4457000

Celluloid?
      1/13/2003:  Robert
Can anyone tell me where I can obtain raw celluloid or pen blanks? There is one large US maker but the minimums are far to high. I understand this is still available in Italy, but I can't confirm it. Regards, and PLEASE... I do NOT sell pens I make, so please do not ask. Besides, all of my pens leak, so there. Cheers Bob

re: Fountain pen desk sets

There are tons of vintage Sheaffer desk sets available and I'll bet they are a lot cheaper than new ones.

Fountain pen desk sets
      1/13/2003:  Randy Martin
We have several Sheaffer fountain pen desk sets at work, with no cap, the pens just fit snuggly in their holders. The boss wants a few more and Sheaffer no longer makes them. Do any of the pen companies still make this type of desk set? I have been unable to find any on the web.

golden le tigre
      1/13/2003:  inge
Could anyone help me? I have for some years an old 18K golden pen, in his original leather soft case. The pen is marked " le tigre 18k", +- 3 1/2" long, and looks similar to the gold Sheaffer pens from 1923 that I found in this site. As this seems to be the site with the pen experts, can anyone help me with more info about this " le tigre" and does anyone has an idea of the value of this pen? I can send jpg's if necessary... Most gratefull, Inge ( from Belgium )

Pen World -- Ninth Annual Readers Choice Awards
      1/13/2003:  Andreas Lambrou
  Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted that Pen World International nominated the Lambrou-Sunami Ichimatsu hand crafted pen, along with three other very notable fountain pens for the BEST ART PEN -- THE MOST NOTABLE ART-INSPRIED PENS OF 2002.

The December/January Pen World magazine has more details on the above and the nominations in the other groups of pens.

The pearl inlay is a special art of Maki-E, first introduced by Platinum in the 1930s. In fact, it is more difficult and requires a higher level of skill than many other forms of hand painted Maki-E work. The particular design of Ichimatsu, created through the fruitful cooperation of the artist, Tatsuya Todo and Classic Pens requires 528 different pieces of blue pearl and white pearl as well as pieces of coral and gold, all accurately cut by hand to the required length, width and thickness. They are hand crafted on a Duofold Centennial to form the specific design and many layers of lacquer are applied during the process of creating Ichimatsu. Every pen in the series of 15 caries the Red Seal signature of the craftsman, Tatsuya Todo.

Please e-mail us if you would like to view images of this beautiful fountain pen. We will be happy to send you a hyperlink.

Aurora ink flow
      1/13/2003:  Michael Dao
Help! I just purchased an Aurora Optima with medium nib. After a couple of days, the ink flow dwindled and then diminished, with a full barrell of ink inside. I kind of anticipated this problem, because I have had 3-4 other Aurora Optimas which ended up with the same problem. Please give suggestions as far as what I need to do. I have tried to flush with 401 mix, refill the ink (Private Reserve Black Cherry), and spreading the tynes with a razor blade--ink flow is heavy now when it decides to flow, but mostly there is no flow. Thanks, Michael Dao

It shows a pen and pencil. Is it desirable for collectors? What is it worth? I'll send you a 100 kb picture if you mail me: ulfeldt@selle16.com

Vacumatic Imperial
      1/11/2003:  Ken Smoot
Not being an aficionado of vacumatics (sorry) I have a black Imperial that I will probably put out for sale. Okay, I know they are quite rare but don't really know what the fair going price is. Barrel is black with the treads just below the nib, very clear barrel, may need a sac. Gold filled, lined pattern cap with initials. Cap is excellent, no dings, no cracks, no brassing, nib is two-tone but scratchy. Any advise would be welcome. Thanks. Regards, Ken

Flushing/filling Esterbrooks
      1/10/2003:  rbruce
Hold the pen under the running water, then try to work the lever to intake and flush, but also work in standing water, whether a pan, cup, or the sink; that's how you can get a slug of water in there for sure. Just keep doing stuff in no particular order. There should be time when the nib is soaked overnight, and the pen is left full of mostly water. Then you can stand the pen in such a way that the point is in tissue or toilet paper. Some color will probably leach out onto the paper. Then you have to flush, etc. I rarely even separate nib from pen, but I guess it makes sense to do so. Even active flushing won't dislodge crud that's been in there for ages. It's not unusual for it to still tint your new ink, even after you figure you've done everything possible. Yes, Esterbrook points unscrew counterclockwise. Sometimes they get stuck, usually because there's ink caked in there. Try soaking in warm but not hot water. Soak a while. Then figure a way to exert torque that will not harm the point, like a rubber gripping surface, and try again.

White Levenger True Writer Fountain Pen
      1/9/2003:  Bonnie
I have a small collection of fountain pens, however, the one's I find myself using most on a daily basis are my Levenger True Writers. At this point, I have their entire color spectrum EXCEPT for the illusive white, which I believe was one of the original colors when Levenger first put this very reasonably-priced line out. Does anyone have one of these white Levenger's in a medium or fine nib they would like to part with? Many thanks!

Hello all! This is just a brief re-stocking update. After quickly selling out of the first shipment of Hero 100s, I've restocked on the steel cap black, green, gray and burgundy (only 1). These all have fine nibs. What I have now is it, probably for about another month. I still haven't had any luck in getting more of the version with the Golden Waves patterned cap. Questions about flushing/filling
      1/9/2003:  Mike
Hello all! I'm new to fountain pen collecting and have a couple of basic questions. First, how do I go about emptying a fountain pen of the ink inside? I have a couple of 1950s Esterbrooks that I would like to replace the ink in. Second, in order to flush the pen with cold water, should I simply hold the nib under a running faucet, draw water into the pen with the lever (after I figure out how to empty it), or is there another way. Third, on the Esterbrooks, does the nib simply screw off counterclockwise? Thanks for the info...More questions to come, I'm sure. Thanks, again! Mike

nice stylophiles
      1/8/2003:  david i
hi Bill. Nice issue, indeed- even at first perusal. Only gripe is that on my 56k modem, yes, the darn articles are not quick to load. The new CP7 looks like it will be a winner, understated yet elegant. Color/Colour coordinating a collection? Surely not! Before ya know it i'd have to have a drawer full of red stripes and a drawer full of blue stripes and.... oh wait. Never mind. Our Resident Lefty's article (and no, i do not know which hand he uses to write) about pen and writing history was a pleasant diversion from the usual "what month did the clip change to.....?" and watches, to boot..... regards david

Mabie Todd
      1/7/2003:  James Pickering
How wonderful it is for me to find this site! I have had a love affair with fountain pens for 63 years. I was born (1929) -- and grew up -- in Northern England. As a boy during the great Depression and World War II I cherished my first fountain pen given to me by an uncle -- a used black Swan. Being a calligrapher (since the age of ten) I re-ground the nib to a chisel edge and used it (generally) in preference to a quill. I still use a Rotring calligraphic fountain pen every day -- and have now started collecting vintage Swan/Blackbird pens from sheer love and nostalgia. You can see some exemplars of my Italic calligraphy at: http://www.jp29.org/cait.htm James

Northern California pen club meeting this Saturday
      1/6/2003:  Jim Griffiths
Just a quick note that this Saturday (the 11th) is the next Pan-Pacific Pen Club (of Northern California) meeting. We are holding it in Sonoma, which is in the heart of the Sonoma Valley, and minutes away from the Napa Valley. That means that after the meeting concludes at 2:00pm, I will be wine tasting by 2:30pm. Sounds like a REALLY good Saturday to me. In any case, if you are in or visiting Northern California, and would like to attend. Please email me if you are not a member and would like information on attending the meeting. Best, Jim Griffiths Secretary, Pan-Pacific Pen Club

Dunhill Pens - Fakes?
      1/6/2003:  Dr James
When talking about fakes, most people seem to focus on MB pens. Has anyone out there heard of, or seen, fake Dunhill pens? I'm asking because I've been seeing quite a few Dunhill pens on ebay for what appear to be quite reasonable prices. What makes me suspicious is that most of the sellers are located in Hong Kong. Thanks!

re: Mont Blanc Ink
      1/6/2003:  Waco Johnny D
Jean, the larger issue is warranty repair. If something happens to the pen and they ask you if you've used any other ink, AND you've been forewarned not to do so, you're on your own unless you choose to lie about it. But that subject aside, and in direct response to your question, it is a sales ploy and blatantly-false and -misleading, and such a statement on the part of a supposed pen expert who is in the business may be legally-actionable if you choose to pursue it. All inks contain lubricants of some sort, and of all the inks I have tried, MB ink has pleased me the least and has always manifested behavior typically associated with LOW lubricant content, actually refusing to flow at all in some pens, and when it does, feeling dry and chalky on the nib.

Another aspect to what ink you are going to put in the pen is the timing of when you were informed of the (supposed) ink requirement. If it was after you completed the transaction, even five seconds after, you are relieved from having to adhere to the policy. A contract can not be changed by one party after its completion, and being able to use any widely-available ink in any fountain pen easily passes the legal test of "reasonableness." Attempting to restrict ink selection AFTER the transaction is like being told on your way off the lot with a just-purchaed new automobile that you must use Sunoco gas exclusively. Hope this helps. WJD.

Mont Blanc Ink
      1/6/2003:  Jean Bass
I have recently purchased a Mont Blanc Fountain Pen. The shop told me that I had to use Mont Blanc Ink as it contained a lubricant. No other ink was suitable as it would destroy the pens' seals. I don't like the ink. Does anyone know if this is really the case or just a sales ploy?

Shaeffer Ball Pen

January PENguins
      1/6/2003:  Rick Propas
Almost on time this month we have The PENguin update with some fairly uncommon pens. In no particular order there are a number of Pelikan 400s, including a cased set. I just can’t seem to keep them in stock, so get them while they’re here. Also some nice new 100s. For fans of the Parker 51 there is a pristine example (cedar, gold filled) in the box with price sticker. Also a nice boxed and complete dished top 75. Finally the less common star clip Vacumatic, this one a slender Maxima in burgundy. The most spectacular item is one I’ve been working on getting for months, the "Bay Leaf" Waterman’s 494. In very good condition. This may not be posted until midday Monday, but if you want first dibs, let us know. It is $750.00. Come visit us and order now. We’ll post the notice on the site later this week, but The PENguin is taking some time off, spending a long week catching up with friends and family in Antartica. We’ll be gone January 9th to 20th.

Parker 51 jewel
      1/6/2003:  Leslie Rose
I am looking for a jewel and it's holder to replace the one that got lost from my husband's Parker 51 double jewel pen when I was foolishly carrying it in the neck of my sweatshirt. It was a grayish color. The part of the barrel that screws off so you can fill it now has only a threaded hole where the jewel was. Does anyone have such a thing or know where I can get one?

OT - Yahoo PayDirect for Pen Purchase?
      1/5/2003:  Robin
Sorry for the OT post, but it is about buying pens, so isn't totally OT, sort of... An online seller who has always accepted checks is requesting the use of Yahoo PayDirect in the future, saying it is easier to track than dealing with checks, etc. I'd never heard of it before. I told him that I was going to ask around about it, and he requested that I not post his name. Anyone use Yahoo PayDirect? Comments good and/or bad appreciated. Thanks!

re: 1st time pen

That last post was for Dan. WJD.

      1/4/2003:  Waco Johnny D
I like to joke that if you ask that same question of 10 pen nuts you'll get 11 different answers. It truly is a personal thing. But I'll put in my two cents anyway, and the following is just my own opinion. I consider the Pelikan 200 series to be without par when it comes to someone's first fountain pen. Pelikans usually come through properly-adjusted, they are self-fillers, meaning you fill from a bottle and thus avoid all the problems associated with those horrible little converters that are used in the cartridge pens, and they are tough. If you wreck the nib you can buy another for well under $20. They aren't very fancy but they're good and reliable, and with proper care will work for a lifetime. I have been "doing pens" since '94, and the Pelikan 200 is the pen I always, without exception, give to people who are just starting out. Finally, do yourself a favor and buy Parker Quink ink; it is my own current personal favorite and, like Pelikan pens, has never let me down. I'm not saying other ink is bad, just that you'll be dealing with enough crap while you begin to learn about the peculiarities of fountain pens without having ink selection possibly throwing you a curve ball. Hope this helps. Oh, before I forget, there are two FAQs you should read: Duc Le's at http://pw1.netcom.com/~danhle/home.html and Burt Janz's at http://www.ccsneinc.com/bjanz/fpfaq.htm. Good luck & welcome to the hobby. WJD.

re: Parker sonnet repair
      1/2/2003:  Waco Johnny D
Common problem with Parkers -- it's happened to me on a few. Sure, you could use glue, but I generally use thickened (i.e. partially-dried and highly-viscous) orange shellac or clear nail polish for this type of repair because that makes it reversible (with heat applied judiciously). Check out in the garage or with your wife/girlfriend. I'd pick the shellac over the nail polish for this particular repair but that's almost splitting hairs in this case. Go easy on the quantity; you don't want any oozing into areas where ink's supposed to be. WJD.

Parker sonnet repair
      1/1/2003:  Edwin
I have a Parker black lacquer sonnet on which the forward body which slides over the nib and the "gold" ring that tops it off have come off. It looks as though I could glue them back on. Is this correct? If so, what kind of glue should I use, and if not, where's a resonable craftsman who could repair it? Thanks for any advise you can offer, Ed.

Mike's Esterbrook Reply
      1/1/2003:  Mike
Thanks for the reply...I filled it yesterday and will use it (though I haven't taken the label off yet, but most likely will). A couple of additional questions, if you don't mind. First, where would be a good place to purchase a broader point? Second, does the point simply screw off, or is there another way it detaches? Third, how much of a price difference is there in the 1551, 2668, and 9668? Thanks, again, for the info. Happy New Years! Mike

Mike's Esterbrook
      1/1/2003:  rbruce
Mike, those pens were current in 1949-1955, and maybe a little later, assuming you have the model with little black knobs or "jewels" on both ends. Some earlier models had one flat end. They were still being sold in stationery stores (there's a relic for you) in the 60s. I've been looking for one of them myself recently! The 9550 nib was labeled Firm, Extra Fine on the point boxes I have. A relative used that point on desk pens in his accounting business. Before computers, he used large sheets of analysis paper with fine divisions. A J in excellent condition might run between $30 and $45; the fact that it was a new, unused pen in cherry condition might justify more. Some people would keep the labels on and enshrine the pen. That's up to you. You might want to get another Esterbrook as a user. The opposing philosophy is that pens are to be used. I have yanked stickers off some, and inked them, myself, but, feeling guilty, I have retained them on others and not used them. Your call. Whether as a collection piece or a working instrument, it's a great pen. Sometimes an old pen requires a new sac, but this is an inexpensive or not terribly complicated repair to make. One doesn't have a right to demand a solid sac after 50 years dry, but some of them remain whole. If you would like a slightly broader point (Medium), you might look for a 1551, 2668, or 9668, in ascending order of price, sometimes, and alleged quality, but in fact they are all satisfactory. Best of luck. It would be interesting for us to know what you decide to do--preserve it or use it!

This update is long overdue so I am happy to announce that I finally published my end-of-year update to the reference section of my Parker 75 website last night. This update includes:

- a Parker 75 knife
- several new patterns sold under the Boucheron name: zebra, bark, and waves
- several prototype patterns

And more!

Come take a look if you have any interest in the 75s. I think you will agree that the variety of this family in patterns and finishes is just amazing!
