Hello all -- I have for sale a Pelikan 1000, green stripe model, with fine nib. The nib has been dipped, but the pen is otherwise brand new. Complete with box, instructions, and bottle of Pelikan ink. Reasonable offers. Thanks, Andy. |

Greetings:
Well the word is out that the New Parker Limited Edition due to arrive in the Spring is a Queen Elizabeth II coommemorating her Coronation in 1952.
Have been told that the pen is the size of a Duofold, with a rounded top and a matte gold overlay. Under 2,500 will be issued and the list on it is about $1000. I have not seen it yet, but pictures should be coming out soon.
Happy pen hunting. |

I am looking to purchase quality italic pen(s) with medium to fine nibs. I use these pens for everyday use. A nib the width of Parker Duofold, or so is ideal. New or used, make does not matter.
Please email me. |
| Mosaic
|
| |
1/31/2002: Esther |
|
Have you noticed that the Mosaic's are bringing premium prices on the auction block? We have been notified by Parker that our last order is in route. Therefore, we'll be able to offer you a number of fountain pens, bal-point pens, roller-ball pens, and pencils (yes, indeed). Our prices are, as always, very competitive. My personal opinion is that the Mosaic is STUNNING, and it is probably going to become a huge succes. Those who order a pen will be given first priority for purchasing pencils. Thank you for your business.

| Lou - you may mean the "floaty" pens
|
| |
1/30/2002: Len Provisor |
|
Lou, are you referring to the pens with fluid in the caps that have an object float up and down and sometimes change the imprint?
If so, they are the "floaty" image pens, very common and often sold on eBay. They are imported form either Denmark or China for advertising purposes. |

I did a search on the WWW using Lamy Persona as the key. "Titanium" Lamy Persona is described as being "titanium and gold plated". There is your answer. As a general rule, I doubt if we'll find pens at that price being made with solid titanium. For that matter, I doubt if there is a need for a pen to be made of solid titanium. |

First of all, I want to mention this is David Mason's idea.
Pen Club Directory
I’ve had several inquiries about creating a source of information for Pen Clubs in the U.S.
Clubs that already exist, and perhaps areas where there are two or more of you who are so inclined towards pen and ink, and who would like to form their own clubs.
I will volunteer to gather all the information anyone wishes to send me about existing clubs.
I will create a directory of sorts to provide the following information:
Name of Club, city and state.
Contact name, e-mail or phone/fax
This information can come from anywhere in the world.
I will list clubs by Country, and by state in the U.S.
This information can be used to post on any pen related web site.
Send me this information at your convenience.
One request, so I can immediately recognize the e-mail.
In the Subject area : indicate… Pen Club Info
Thanks,
Len Provisor

| Forming your local pen club
|
| |
1/28/2002: Len Provisor |
|
The local Chicago Pen Club has grown very nicely in just the last few months.
From a whim hoping to gather a few friends to meet from time to time, we now have 40 listed members, and the last meeting had 18 people cramming into Don Lavin’s office.
I’ve reported our progress and happenings on various chat sites, and I am really surprised that in just the last few days I have received many e-mails from pen folk that wish to start their own pen clubs also.
I’ll gladly pass on some tips that may be heplful.
First, join the PCA Pen Collectors of America. As a member you will receive a membership list from which you can make more contacts. Although some may wish to remain private, I assure you that anyone really interested in pens would be glad to meet with others to share the pleasures, compare pens and actually can learn a lot from one another.
Second, just keep asking for people to contact you. You can post on any of several very popular websites such as Pentrace, Penlovers, Zoss, 4pens and others.
Ask at your local pen shop if they would be interested to host or sponsor a pen club.
They would be thrilled to get their name in front of serious pen people, and be helpful to support your efforts.
Meeting sites can be at collector’s homes, a library, a local church, a member’s corporate office, after hours, and if you get that big, rent a meeting room at a local hotel.
Ask for nominal donations from pen shops (money, ink, stationery, blotters, anything with their name for advertising) or you can charge a small dues to cover donuts and expenses.
The reason this can be more successful than you may think is simple. Many pen fanciers are casual collectors, and may never be able to attend a pen show. Your local club would be the closest to a show, and the knowledge from others would be of enormous interest to new and vintage collectors.
Put up notices on a Bulletin Board at a local University book store, at the local Library, stationery store, greeting card gift shop, professional organizations such as legal, medical, literary organizations.
So, my friends, if you really need that pen fix between pen shows, try some of the above ideas.
At the very least, you will make new friends, and most importantly you will be uncovering a tremendous source of new pens from others that may wish to buy, sell, trade………you know the routine, you can never get enough of pens and inks.

Why am I not surprised? A Mr. Kiowatha posted on 1/17 that this vehicle was at a certain vintage car dealer. In case you are wondering, I made many calls to tract down this rumor, it is totally false. Oh well, anyway, if anyone has a photo or image of this actual working 1934 novelty Parker VacMobile, please send me a copy, I'd be very appreciative. Thanks. |

It is yet to be determined the damage it can cause to celluloid, Hard rubber or God Forbid Maki-e.

I've just returned from India with 8 different Pilot convertor pens--all with 14k gold nibs. Almost all are in very good shape. | Lamy Persona
|
| |
1/28/2002: Ron |
|
Looking through books and old catalogs, I'm getting conflicting information about the titanium Lamy Persona. The catalogs from around the time it was released say that it is solid titanium (of course, not referring to the black titanium oxide coated version) - and the one that I have (an earlier version) certainly looks like it is solid titanium. But a number of books refer to it as "titanium plated". Solid or not? I assume that it is possible (or likely) that someone goofed, and the authors have simply passed on the goof in each new book. Anyone know for sure? |

| Our Chicago Pen Club meeting today
|
| |
1/26/2002: Len Provisor |
|
Considering we just started a few months ago, I’m really impressed we now have 39 members on the list, and today 18 pen collectors who can’t get enough of this stuff showed up to squeeze into the office of Don Lavin.
My point is, I think that no matter where you are, except maybe the ice fields of Antarctica, all you have to do is mention “Let’s start a Pen Club!” and closet doors will start creaking. Most of our members are familiar faces, and I’m still getting e-mails and calls asking about the meetings, and as we build it, they will come.
My friend Sid Sharma in Ann Arbor, MI announced his intent to start a local club, and I’ll bet he’ll soon have many knocking on his door.
Susan Wirth, Ross Makie and his wife drove in from Milwaukee, that’s about 80 miles. Susan showed her amazing collection of Parker “wannabies”, Parker pen copies and other goodies.
Roger Wooten came in from Rockford, as did Jerry Adair from Freeport, IL (yup, home of Newell/Rubbermaid).
Jerry Adair brought an incredible vintage #7 S.S.CROCKER in mottled hard rubber, and also the elusive Triad pen.
Jim Ryan attended, retired and incredibly, he has NO computer. Think of it, NO computer. He’s happy. Very happy touring mid America at his whim with his wife, ‘teeking and looking for pens and just doing what pleases him. He casually mentioned he bought the entire inventory of the old Dur-O-Lite pencil factory, including all their sales kits a few years ago. Located in a suburb of Chicago, no one ever thought to call and ask about this “old suff”. Jim did. He’s pretty happy.
What did I bring? My collection of vintage Parker and Pelikan ink blotters, a mere smidget of my collection. Also pictures of the next Parker airplane models, the 1954 and 1957 DC3’s.
Herb Schulz brought a nice surprise. His wife surprised him for Xmas by framing some of my ink blotters. Especially beautiful was the new Pelikan blotter, framed with an imprinted Pelikan quill. Herb is our resident Pelikan expert, and always has a pocket full to brag about.
One new member who came with his young son, who brought his own pen collection also. I’ll bet he will bring some friends for the next meeting.
Don Lavin announced that Parker-Waterman (Sanford Corp) will be the official sponsor of the Chicago Pen Show in May. Sanford will also unveil their new LE fountain pen, limited to 1,952 pens world wide. Further details on this to follow soon.
Oh yes, at the Chicago Pen Show 2002, there WILL be another Friday night Blues Night, and also a Jam Session on Saturday night. More details to follow.
So, we had a great time and now we need to find a small convention hall for our next meeting.
Remember, if you are so inclined, just mention the words…..pen club, and you can start your own.

We have a Sanford Dealer demo kit consisting of two leather-like cases. Each case holds engraved demo pens, pencils, and markers. The large one holds some forty items. The small one, which can be put inside the large case, holds some twenty four items. Some of the pens are high quality Parker, Waterman, and Rotring barnds. Others are Papermate, Parker, UniBall, and similar. This is a useful tool for a dealer, but it is a unique collectible that will appreciate in time. In addition to the collection of pens, one can use the lined cases to store and show a pen collection. Thank you. |

Hello all!
It was terrific to see those of you who braved the snowstorm to venture out to the Philadelphia Pen Show this past weekend. Even with the inclement weather, I think it was a successful show. Driving back to Allentown Saturday night through the teeth of the storm was no picnic however. It took us almost 2-1/2 hours. Returning Sunday morning, although taking only half the time, we had to battle sun glare and a constantly salt-encrusted windshield. I vote for June next year!
I'm running a 30% off sale on the Hero '58' series through the end-of-day on Sunday, the 27th. Here's a good opportunity to fill out your collection with all five finishes, or to try one for the first time: The January Special does *not* apply to these sale pens -- you'll have to purchase something else as well to qualify if you haven't already taken advantage this month.
http://www.hisnibs.com/'58'_series.htm
http://www.hisnibs.com/specials.htm
We brought our new line of sealing 'wax' to the show to give everyone a chance to see the amazing selection of colors available:
http://hisnibs.com/sealing_wax.htm
The Squigglers always do well at shows, as people can look at them 'in the flesh', so to speak (yes, even fountain pen collectors purchase Squigglers ):
http://www.hisnibs.com/squigglers.htm
Surprisingly, the single biggest selling fountain pen for us was not a new model, but rather the Sheaffer Amber Glow Balance II. I have no idea why that should be so, but I'm glad I thought to bring them with me at the last moment!:
http://www.hisnibs.com/balance_ii.htm
Anyway, enjoy what promises to be an exciting football playoff weekend -- at least for some of us. The Giants are still in it, aren't they?

Norman Haase

I have picked up a few good pieces of information from this bulletin board and a few have even given me advice directly. Consequently I have deduced that vintage pens generally have the advantage forf reliability. I agree with this point. Then I was looking at the vintage pen I thought was the coolest - the Wahl-Eversharp Doric and got some great advice from someone on this board. I ended up with my favorite, a Doric in the Moracco color with the roller clip. But the really neat thing about this great looking pen is the nib. It is a large and impressive Stub and it writes like a dream. The ONLY problem with the pen is that because I got a deal on a pen with some bite marks at the ends, I lightly sanded and polished most of them out and I end up with a pen I cannot post. Maybe I don't need to post but is there a way to put something in the cap to hold the now smaller diameter pen? |

I have a Nardi mechanical pencil. It's fairly long and a dull orange or umber color. It holds 4 seperates leads at one time. I would like to refill
all four chambers in it with lead, the way it used to be many years ago. Problem, the lead is larger than 1.1mm and I don't know where to find it. I
know Faber sells 1.4mm lead but is that the correct size? Also, I'd like to get lead for it in 4 different colors, including red, blue and green,
again in an attempt to restore it to the way it used to be not necessarily to use it.

FS: regular edition Adriatic Stone celluloid FP, w/ matte gold trim, 14k M nib. W/ box & papers.
I bought this pen last fall from Scription, the Gman net-dealer. Frau Huebener explained that the pen had been purchased from a Visconti distributor & may have been a demo pen. It looks perfect to me, w/ the exception of a very small scratch on the blind cap, possibly from posting. I've filled it once, & it writes fine. I don't post my pens, so the blemish must've been there when I bought it. I've since acquired an LE Adriatic Stone pen, hence the sale of this 1. Paid $110, so that's what I'm asking + shipping (USPS Priority w/ insurance).
Thanks for looking,

| Need Blind Cap for Parker Vac

Hello, this is my first posting here, so here goes.
I need a blind cap for my 1937 Parker Vacumatic. It is the big one. Same size thread on the blind cap screws as a Doufold Senior.
Color is alternating black and greenish silver bands. Clip screw jewel is striped, section is striped and the blind cap should be striped with a striped jewel.
Trim is chrome, cap has three narrow bands.
I hope I have described this pen adequately.
Thanks. |

Pens For Sale
I posted a FS list some time ago - thought I'd try the following again. All have been inked and are in excellent condition
unless indicated. Additional info and/or scans available on request.

sharp. White metal tim. Wonderful flexible med nib. $125

Waterman L'Etalon; blue lacquer w/ gp trim. Large med nib. $100
Waterman 452 sterling overlay (pansy pattern); slip on replacement sterling
clip. Sterling pattern a bit worn, but still looks nice. HR is black.
Flexible med nib. $125
Lamy 2000; black resin w/brushed steel trim; piston fill, med/broad nib.
Matching 0.7mm pencil. $75
Lamy 30 year anniversary wood ballpoint; silver plated trim. $40
Sheaffer Legacy II; gunmetal w gp trim. Med nib. $75
Sheaffer Legacy ballpoint, black w/brushed goldplated cap. $40

Montblanc Noblesse (c.1980s) fp (med nib) and bp; silver plate. $75
Parker Senior Duofold (~mid 1920s) in red permanite. The imprint is weak, but ‘Parker Duofold’ is readable. The cap band is good, but the clip is brassed a bit. The blind cap is sharp and black, the cap top is oxidized a bit. I can’t see any repairs to the body, but the cap has a couple of repaired, stable cracks (only noticeable under magnification). The nib (which appears correct for the pen) has a couple of pliers marks at the base. The nib is broad and writes very smoothly. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe this is a $300 pen if in perfect condition. $100.
Pelikan 350 Fountain Pen; black w/ vermeil (gold over sterling) cap, Broad nib. $100
Stipula Duetto; Blue, white trim. Very smooth stub nib. In box. $125.

The philly show indeed was very nice. Posted a longer review elsewhere, but it would look odd formatted for penlovers. As Terry notes, there were fershure nice pens to be found. But the dinners, lounge-chat, and poker games amongst fellow collectors- the chance to learn about our hobby- is perhaps what makes the penshow milieu particularly special. I had a great time at this show. best regards. david |

I recently decided to awaken my Parker 180 pen from hibernation only to find that the rubber sac within the autoconverter had hardened and one squeeze did not suck ink in exactly where it should have done!
I posted messages to every pen repair company I could find on the web and received an almost immediate reply from Battersea Pen Home.
They could provide me with the new plunger type plastic insert but I wanted the real thing (yes I know...idiot you say!).
They advised me that they had some in stock about 20 years old and could not say that these were leak proof but would pop one in the post for me.
When I enquired how much this would be they advised me that this would be free of charge...! The converter appeared days later in a padded bag with a compliments slip and they even paid the postage.
I am posting this message to say thank you SIRS you are scholars and gentlemen....in an age which is all too ready to grab grab grab.
My hope that their generosity will be repaid by readers using them for sales and repairs in the future as their customer service is indeed second to none!

I have to agree with Terry about one's preference in spending his/her money. I have a friend who is a real estate developer and builds office parks in Conshohocken. Recently, after telling him about my pen collection, I asked him what kind of pen he uses to sign contracts. His answer "Flair markers!". That comes from a guy who spends thousands on legal and professional fees and writes with a flair pen! To each his own. As for myself, I love collecting and do love finding a good bargain to add to my pen collection. And, being a ball point man, I do love choosing what kind of Parker ballpoint - be it a Sonnet, Premiere, Flighter, T-1, 75 Sterling, Insignia and the Jotters which range from the simple to the vintage - this is like choosing a tie to wear with your shirt for the work day. Philadelphia is a wonderful place to hold a pen show and we must do all we can to find people interesting in coming to the 2003 show next January - that means we must do a better job of publicizing the event through media coverage. |

I just attended the 13th annual Philly show. This was my 13th. Philly show. Seems hard to belive! Congrats to Berliner pen for taking the time to provide us with another pen show opportunity!!! I arrived Friday for the preshow activities about 4 hours after the show began. I was tired from the trip so I never put anything out on a table. I did meet with 2 dealer/collectors and sold some pens and a fair number of parts. This resulted in about 75% of my total sales for the weekend. My sales were slow on Sat and Sun. This was a disappoint but considering the weather predictions of 4-8 inches of snow for Sat. it's not hard to understand why some folks did not make the show. I thought the crowd was good on both days. Maybe I didn't have what they wanted or maybe folks are still being conservative in spending. I know some "heavy weight" pens changed hands. One person bought a Parker 45, corrugated MOP barrel eyedropper as well as a baby ringtop Parker red bakelite barrel eyedropper. I also heard of some heavy weight limited editions changing hands. I am sure there were others that I did not hear about. It was nice to see my pen collecting friends again. I went out to dinner with several folks Sat night and we had a lively discusion about what else, pen shows. The subject of vintage versus
limited editions came up. Folks I am hear to tell you that whether you spend $1700 on a limited edition or I spend $1700 on vintage pen, our non pen collecting pen friends think we are both nuts. While on that subject, with all of the people in the world or even just a big city like Philly, why don't thousands and thousands come to a pen show??? Guess maybe they just aren't interested in pens like we are. I am a big believer in live and let live. You can sign your name to a letter with myrid of writing instruments from a uniball to $5000 limited edition but either one gets the job done. It's all a matter of personal preference, not a matter of the size of of your pocket book but what you want to do with what is in it. What gives you personal satisfaction. |

Now the Philly Pen Show is over, it is time for reviews to roll in. I went there Saturdy and in spite of the snow storm that followed in the afternoon, I did not see many people like what I saw two years ago when I last went there. Perhaps the recession or post Sept 11 blues. My suggestion is to improve next year's show attendance by having media attention focused on it - a newspaper article on pen collecting would be nice with a tie in to the show. Secone thought, I feel many sellers should focus more on pens that people can buy than on trying to sell LE's of assorted brands. Nevertheless, let's keep the Philly pen show for next year and make it even better to attract more people. Jim |

My "real" pen is a Pelikan. But I have a few old, basic, Shaeffer pens that were sold in stores for years. They use the Skripp cartridges. I'd like to find a supplier to replace a couple of these. If not the pens then at least the nibs. They came with different colored barrels.
I found a supplier for the cartridges, but I cannot locate a supplier of those simple fountain pens.

| Atlanta Pen Show 3/8-10
|
| |
1/19/2002: Lee Chait |
|
This is a bad news-good news deal.
The Show the last two years, in my opinion, has been dismal. This is its 8th year.
I was President of the Southeast Pen Collectors' Club from 1999-2001, with almost 100 members based in Atlanta. Prior to 1998, which is the beginning of my interest in pens, there had been a falling out between the show promoter and various members of the local pen community and the Club was not involved in the Show.
The good news is that since November 2001 Jimmy Dolive has taken an active role in sponsoring and promoting the Show.
The Southeast Pen Collectors' Club has Jimmy himself who operates Total Office Products; Mike Conway; Sam Fiorella of Pendemonium; Scott Franklin of the Franklin Pen Company; Rick Horne; John Mottishaw; Scott Woodside of Platinum Pen; and Susan Wirth as members, as well as many others in the pen community who regularly attend the Pen Shows.
The Show will be much better this year and with continuing changes in the operation of the Show, it will continue to improve.
There is no reason to believe the Atlanta Show can't rival LA or DC as one of the premier Shows.
The transportation to and from Atlanta is readily available; the hotel is very nice and relatively inexpensive; and the Club will be behind Jimmy in a maximum effort to bring to Atlanta a Show that we in the pen community can
all enjoy and benefit from.
Please contact me if you have any questions.

My favorite pen is MB 149. Why? In terms of appearance it is the prototype of a fountain pen. It looks like a european vintage pen. It has rounded ends. It skips a little but most new pens skip! However, I don't carry this pen outside of my house because it is too big and attracts too much attention. I also like my Pelikan M400. It is small and does not attract much attention. Thus, I can use it on a daily basis. Again it looks like a vintage pen. I would prefer it to have rounded ends though. Lots of people like M800 but again it is too big. I don't want to be the center of attention and I don't want the attracted public to try my pens. I think different countries have different ideas of the best pen. For example, I have never seen a vintage duofold in my country (Turkey). Thus, I have no feelings associated with similar looking pens. German pens and Parker 51s are the fountain pens for most of us. Italien and French pens don't look like fountain pens to me. I fountain pen should be black and ugly; like a MB149! |

Help
I am looking for any information as to the history & whereabouts of a Japanese Pen company called "Newman".
I have a 60's or 70's era roller ball pen, called the "Newman Rotary Pen". It is black (Bakelite or similar resin) with Gold filled trim. It has a clasp and a stylized "N" in Gold on the outer barrel. It is two piece and uses "osmiroid" type or "Parker" type ink cartridges as refills. Two came with the original.
It is packaged in a simple cardbord box (yellow) with the name "Newman" printed on the face and "Made in Japan" on the back. Inside is a foam insert holding the Pen itself & two refill cartridges with the words "Newman Rotary Spare Ink" embossed in white letters on the plastic cartridges.
The printed instructions that came with the pen are in both French and English. The caption reads "An Epochal Product", not a fountain pen but an entirely new, creative writer with a soft, pleasant and dreamy touch."
Apparently it has a special alloy tip and a "ruby-ball" point roller.
This is an extremely interesting, albeit probably a low-end rip -off of the Toshiro Nakata rollerball "autopen" circa 1966.
Anyone with information on these pens and the "Newman" company, please contact me. |

Don't make me chosse one. Modern? I guess that I would pick either my Dunhill AD2000 Carbon Fiber. Thompson Titanium Duofold (FI nib), or Dupont Vertigo Olympia. They all write like dreams. Vintage? My Waterman 56 ripple w/medium flex nib, PFM I, or a 51. |

Simple enough. My favorite pen is a Montblanc 139, in a full sterling silver overlay, barley pattern, with an OBB nib. Of course, I don't actually happen to HAVE such a pen, but one of these days, I intend to have one made! For noe, it's a tough call, modern, would be the Nettuno Superba for it's wonderful celluloid, or the CP4 for it's engraved sterling silver. Vintage it's between the MB 139 and the '53 149. |

Hello all!
Just a reminder that Teresa and I will be at the Philadelphia pen show, which runs from the 18th-20th. We hope to see many of you there! Because of the show, I'll be offline from Thursday night to Monday night, but please know that I'll respond to your orders and inquiries as quickly as possible upon my return.

The new 'faux' sealing wax and glue guns have been going gangbusters on the site since I introduced them this weekend. I'll be bringing them to the show, but if you're not attending, please take a look here:

We have two Parker "Special Edition Orange" pens. One with a medium nib, and the other with a fine nib. New-in-the-box. A similar pen was sold on e-bay for over $360, just a few days ago. We are offering those as part of our inventory reduction sale for $350 each. We also have Mosaic pens in stock, and expect to get a few more pencils (yes!). Four Centennial 1988 pens, and many other items. Once we reduce inventory to the level we seek, prices will go back to normal. |

Wanted: I think it might be a #770 Triumph. My grandparents bought it for me new in 1974. I think it cost $15. It was just before the Targas were introduced. The pen was a cartridge/converter type, with a gold fine point. It had a black, plastic, squared off barrell, and a gold filled squared off cap. I sent it to Scheaffer, and they kept it. Can someone help me find a replacement?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Hello.
Philadelphia pen show is this weekend. Great show. Nice pens. Nice people. Highly recommended to
anyone who likes pen shows and to anyone who has never had the rush of spending a day surrounded by
thousands of vintage pens.
i plan to be there friday morning. Friday lunch is always fun. Friday is a more relaxed day at pen shows
and people enjoy chatting over pretty decent hotel food.
Besides hunting for weird and elusive Parker Vacumatics off the bell-curve for typically seen models, i hope
to bring a bunch of weird show-and-tell stuff. Figure one case of 30 different vac pens and pencils all with
the funky "jeweler" extra-fat capband, amongst others. Happy to chat with anyone with particular interest
in vacs.
Also hope to have couple "junk boxes" full of Parker 51 and Skyline pens/parts for sale as well as few nice
vacs.
Do consider coming to this show if you live anywhere accessible.

|

1/14/2002: Len Provisor |

VacMan, this is a done deal soon as I find more detailed photos and literature that may exist out there for the best possible details on this model. I have a few images that are poor quality reproductions, but give me a good idea of the model. I would like to make an appeal to any pen collectors that may have photos or literature showing this model. Once I have the fine details down to the hub caps, consider this a done deal. This model VacMobile was likely introduced around 1934, and I believe it was made not by Parker Pen Co., but rather an very ambitious Parker dealer. It was an actual functioning small size automobile, the body competely in the shape of a Vacumatic pen, capped, and it was a convertible one-seater.
Another fun project from Provisor Promotions. Just wait 'til you hear about the stuff I really have under wraps!!! |

1/13/2002: Len Provisor |
|
I am pleased to announce the next model of vintage Parker Pen Co. aircraft,
the Third and Fourth in a Series.
Parker actually had two DC3's.
First was a 1954 with aircraft code N51A to honor the Parker "51" fountain
pen.
Second was a 1957 DC3 with aircraft code N61A to honor their next pen the
"61"
Both models have a beautiful decoration and we actually could not decide if
one was nicer than the other, so Geoffrey Parker and I decided we would
produce both models.
This will be an open production limited to calendar year 2002 only.
This means we will number each one as they are produced, and as in the past,
production will cease at the end of the year.
The first pre-production samples will be ready in about another week.
If all is correct I will have my master aero-photographer Dean Tweeddale of
PenLovers.net take the photos and put the images up on my website
www.inkblotters.com along with the history of these aircraft.
Orders are now being taken, with reservations for the LE numbers being held
for prior customers unless othewise advised.
Models will be the same highly detailed construction as prior models in
authentic detail, working from actual aircraft blueprints and photos from
the Parker family photo archives.
Eighteen-inch wingspan, solid wood construction and each base will be
personally signed by Geoffrey S. Parker, the great grandson of George S.
Parker.
If you would like to see preview images, e-mail me for art rendering images
of these pre- production models.
Price: $250. each plus freight from IL Unconditionally guaranteed
VISA MC Persoanl checks (drawn on U.S. banks)
The 2001 1946 Parker "51" Beechcraft : Please note, I have only seven of
the LE numbered models left of the Beechcraft Parker "51", which are in
production as we speak. These will be available in about 6-8 weeks.

optimally, i tend to attribute it to
its age, and believe if restored
'properly', it ought to write fine. as
in the post below, even new vintage
pens need not have performed flawlessly
(hence parker wanting to repair ere
selling). true, since they were commonly
used, they had to be reliable for the
most part (like cars today), but my
feeling is that we do not fault the
vintage pen's manufacture at all. modern
pens, if they work well, are regarded
as borderline exceptions, and we expect
them to croak anytime, thereby confirming
our low opinion of them. |

Eker makes some interesting points with regard to modern vs. vintage pens. As I seldom post, few know of my general apathy toward modern pens. While many are nice to look at, I regularly hear complaints that fall into one of two categories: the pen does not write or body integrity. Frankly I have serious concerns about writing instruments which cost hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars that fail to properly perform their basic function which is to write. I often wonder what the impact would have been on a comapny that had similar performance problems with its products when the pen was the primary writing tool of business and the public? Most of us are familiar with the story of L.E.Waterman's motivation to produce a better quality pen. Similarly, George Parker, then a teacher of telegraphy and seller of pens made by some one else, felt an obligation to repair those pens he sold and decided that he could make a better pen. Walter SHeaffer believed that the pen would be improved significantly if it had a self-filling mechanism that was not obtrusive in the pocket. While marketing played a key role in the success of pen manufacturers, and we have no records (at least I am not aware of any) indciating the number of returns or problems experienced with the pens of 1900 through the onset of regular use of cartridge supplied pens, I would hazard a guess that the major manufacturers had a fairly small failure rate. If one could obtain the numbers today, (I don;t think that most of the manufacturers would release the information) we might find that the failure rate is as high as 20%, perhaps even higher! Aside from the public sector human service agencies (and this is not a shot at the public sector) businesses that survive don;t have those number of returns. Eker's concerns about modern pens seem to be more the rule than the exception. In talking with a person who is considering making some pens, the question of what should be used for feed and filling systems came up. After thinking about it for a while and considering the comments and complaints about modern pens as well as my own personal experience, it was hard for me to recommend systems from many of the modern pen manufacturers. Admittedly I have a bias in that I repair and sell vintage pens, but I hear fewer complaints about the performance of vintage pens than about those made today. The vintage pens still seem to perform better, once restored, than do the modern version. Parker, Sheaffer and Waterman (and others) made very good pens that, I believe, were intended to last for the lifetime of the owner. They had to, the pen was a major expense and was expected to perform. The focus of today's manufacturer seems to be to make an instant collectible or status symbol. Admittedly, many are beautiful and the materials are expected to last far longer and without the deterioration of yesterday's celluloids and hard rubbers. But, what good is a shell if the primary function is not met. Seems to me it is akin to buying a Mercedes without an engine! Looks great, will last a long time, but you can't drive it any where. For me, the pre-1950 made pen is still superior to the pen of today. Perhaps not always as convenient, but then, we have all these other items like lap tops and palm pilots that we can record notes with while in our important meetings. When I want to write, I pick up a 51, a Vacumatic, an Esterbrook, a Snorkel, a Wahl, an old Duofold and even some no names that tend to write when I put the nib on the paper. Just my two cents. |

i wish to concur with Mr. Mawhorter's missive. Philly show is a warm friendly show. Great pens. Nice people. Awesome auction. Dealers, collectors, authors in abundance. This'll be my third run to this show- first one i'll have hit three times. The show reminds me much of the down-to-earth flavor of another nearby show in Ohio run by some guy over that way. By all means bring along some weird Vacumatics. Those are pens, if'n you've not seen one before. Best David |

I am looking foward to the Philly pen show weekend after next, Jan. 19 and 20. I have attended every show they have had going back to the first one at the engineers club. Geoff and Bernie will open the show to the public for two days this year. I have already started getting my parts ready as well as pens of course. I am also bringing a "store stock" buy out of lead, ballpoint refills, roller ball refills, etc. By the way if you are not a member of PCA, you should consider joining. Congrats to Rick Propas and his crew on the last issue of the PCA "rag" the PENnant. A great magazine for pen collectors!!! And I will admit I am partial to Mabie Todd pens! Thanks for featuring them. Has anyone heard if there will be a Boston show this year? |

| PEN PROBLEM
|
| |
1/7/2002: Bill R. |
|
Skipping is a common, maybe too common problem among modern pens. Fortunately, it's almost always easily curable with either a good cleaning, and flush with a very dilute soap and water solution to get rid of grease, oil, or crud left from the manufacturing process, or maybe with a change in ink type. Try Sheaffer, or Parker Quink and see how it goes. One thing I have noticed about OMAS pens is that they can be very picky about ink used. I've had good luck lately with Private Reserve Tanzanite and Lace Placid blue, it seems to flow very nicely. Good luck, I love the looks of those OMAS Celluloids! Bill |

| PEN PROBLEM
|
| |
1/6/2002: Joe |
|
I just purchased an Omas Extra Celluloid. It is an excellent pen. I like it very much. I just have one problem. But before I get into that, I just want to point out that I am a novice to the fountain pen world, and this is my first really top of the line fountain pen. I just have one problem with the pen. Every time I write with the pen, on the downstroke, on a letter like an "I" or a "T", the pen does not initially write. No ink comes out, until about 1/2 down the downstorke of the letter. Even sometime on other letters this same problem happens. The pen is completely full. So it is not a problem on ink. So can anyone help me? Is this just a startup problem with my pen? Or is something really wrong with my pen?
THANK YOU!!!

| I am getting tired of pens!
|
| |
1/6/2002: Eker |
|
This is from Turkey. Let me share my experiences with pens. I would like to share my experience during the pst 25 years and perticularly the recent five years.
The reason that prompted me to write this is that I am getting tired of serious problems in almost all of my pens. I do not have many pens. Around 20 new ones and about 15 "vintage" (mostly junks!). First the new ones: Since I bought my Parker 75 flighter in 1975 its cap kept fallinf. It did not post either. I pinched the cap with a plier and dented it so that it remained on the pen! Back then I was not interested in appearances, I was just using it. In 1980s I bought a M4400. After 4-5 yars the mechanism became so stiff an sticky that every time ý wanted to fill in with ink I had to take off the nib and pour in some water to lubricate it (I flush my pens with water before storing). The piston mechanism also developed a play inside the barrel. The tortoisshell body lost its shine and in fact started to peel off where it touched my hand as if there was a thin outer layer. A Pelikan 150(I think) still remains perfect! And the m400 still got the best F nib among my pens. Smooth and with a shade of flex.MB149 looks great but skips. Duofold Centennial (pearl grey)was my dream for a while. But it has the worst nib. Scratchy. The tines were not parallel.I adjusted them with only my finger nails. They became perfectly parallel but the problem became even worse! From then on no adjustment improved the situation. With disgust I threw it into some drawer not to see it or to remember the mony I lost on this pen. The Sonnets have soft but very very scratchy nibs. Like writing wit a sharp pin. A sheaffer crest have a crooked "iridium".The tines were apparently cut while the iridium was attached in a crooked position. But the nib is very smooth!A Faber-Castell skips. A Delta 365 I bought in Italy have a wide sterlin silver cap band (overlay) which has an intricate design but broken at several places. The steel nib is like a nail but very smotth. MB144? A very cheap looking barrel with a flaking gold plated ring on it. Now the good ones: M800, some skipping but good in general. Cross Classic Century pens? Stiff but smooth and no problems. I dropped one. It hit several sharp places before it landed on the floor. Nothing happened! The other one? I forgot it in my shirt pcket. A friens tried to write on a plastic covered menu. The other one writed on a paper napkin. And the third one dropped it on the floor! All within 2 minutes. Nothing happened. There is God!Waterman Carene? No problem. Now the vintage: All the German brands (Kaweco,Tropen, MB, Pelikan120) are cracked or crack! The American brands have no cracks. The Parkers (21, 45, aerometric 51s)have almost no problems. After flushing they write immediately and are very smooth.Coclusion: I have other hobbies but I have never seen such quality problems with them (photography, astronomy, aquariums). So, do not buy expensive pens especially if you do not have aftersales service in the country. Buy a Parker 45 (still made in UK), flighter if possible-very durable.Or buy a vintage 21 or 51. Battered pens look like brasses black Nikons or Canons or prewashed jeans-Look classy! This is the end. If you want to respond or share please write to the board instead of personally. This was long, sorry if a had any spelling errors.

We have discovered three NOS TOMBOW ZOOM pens. These are VERY slim pens, which makes them unique, elegant, and interesting. We have one red/black in a plastic case (it "floats" in mid air), one white/black in a metal case, and one stainless/gold in a metal case and an outer cardboard sleeve. These are hard to find. They are great collectibles, as well as, excellent writers. When you use this pen, there is no doubt that someone will ask to "borrow" it. We have a picture of the red/black one, which we can e-mail. Thank you. |

Greetings Stylophiles!
There have been a few people asking about who will be the new Lamy distributor since Hampton-Haddon dropped the line. According to my now ex-rep, Filofax will take over distribution this month. As some of you may know, Filofax is also the U.S. distributor for Yard-O-Led writing instruments. We'll miss Hampton-Haddon as they did a great job in promoting Lamy pens. As for Filofax, they know organizers and agendas, but writing instruments...?
We shall see!!!

For those of you who have not seen the new PENnant, there is an article ("A Tale of Two Pencils") which finally corrects the widespread misconception that the Eversharp pencil was a Japanese invention. In fact, it was invented by Charles Keeran of Bloomington, IL. Wahl managed to wrest control of the Eversharp company from Keeran, leaving him with almost nothing.
The article is also posted (with typos corrected) at:

With the January issue behind us we will begin working on the February issue….Yes we have made the decision/leap to producing a monthly issue of Stylophiles for your reading/viewing pleasure. We of course are always looking for more content to include in Stylophiles so if you’re so inclined send us an idea for an article. Or, better yet write one for us and now since the debut of the “Pens in Your Pocket” column you can write a quick page about the pen(s) that you are actually carrying around and writing with. Again I hope that you continue to enjoy the site and wish all of you a Happy, Healthy, Safe, Prosperous, and Peaceful 2002. Dean Tweeddale |

I'm seriously considering purchasing a sterling silver Faber-Castell rollerball pen from the Graf von Faber-Castell Collection. It really looks great, but for the price dealers are asking, I'm just wondering if it's worth the price. Does anybody out there in the pen world have any experience with this pen? What do you think about it? Thanks |
