Re: Minneapolis Pen Hunter

I agree. Very few places to look at new pens any more in the Twin Cities. But you should call Mike Carter at the Fountain Pen Recyler in Crystal. Try out some of his vintage pens. The old pen are genuine bargains and many write better than new stock. Mike is a great guy and will help you find a great pen affordable pen or three. Cheers, Dave

Checkerboard Optima Pen
      1/31/2001:  Rachel
New to this site, but am looking for a pen that mirrors my hobby, open wheel racing. I had a great checkerboard Optima Signature Series Pen bought for the low price of about $7.00 at Target (somehow it made it's way from my purse) and now they don't carry it anymore. It is a chrome barrel pen, and it's end looks like a nail head. It is 5" long and has checkerboard toward the top of the clip and vanishing towards the tip of the pen. Any ideas for me, the novice, of where I can find another? Most appreciated. E-mail if you like.

re: Minneapolis pen hunter
      1/31/2001:  Jeff
It's a shame that a market as large and affluent as the Twin Cities does not have a pen store (with inventory) to speak of. CPC is having their problems; I haven't seen a new pen there since last spring. Thomas & Grayson closed down a while ago. You can find a nice selection of Waterman, MB, and Cross at Daytons, who quite often offer a 25-30% discount during sales. Other than that, I know of no reputable stationery store in the area. Jeff

re: montegrappa fountain pens
      1/31/2001:  Jeff
I'm not sure if Montegrappa changed their feeders, but I am sure that my Symphony does not lay down as smooth and consistent a line as my Eleganza. It's too bad, because I really love the look and feel of a 'grappa, but now I'm a little gun-shy about buying another one. Jeff

Sonnet air vent
      1/31/2001:  Mark
It's a fallacy that the vent needs to be sealed. The nib itself goes into a innercap and is not exposed to the air whereas the cap has a vent around this innercap. I have a Sonnet which can remain capped and unused for a week and write at the first stroke.

Sonnet air vent
      1/31/2001:  Basil
I know it has been discussed many times already, but we are here to help each other, right? Someone please send me inforamtion or a web link about sealing Parker Sonnet cap air vent. Will be very grateful.

Value of MB pens
      1/31/2001:  Stephen Lam
Mike, I guess if you want to know the market value of your find, you have to test the market by, for example, putting them on eBay and see how much collectors are prepared to pay for them. That way, you will know their market value at this point in time. You may of course refer to pen books and get some ball park values which are really not reliable as the condition of a pen affects its true market value thus making it difficult to quote a price, or even a narrow range of prices for a particular pen. Furthermore, my experience is that such "valuations" depend very much on who the author is, a collector or a dealer, and his/her market position. By the way, it is very difficult to assess the value of a pen purely by its brand and year of production.

Parker Star Clip
      1/30/2001:  Dick Schwinn
I've just come across a Parker Vacumatic star clip pen. It measures 135mm, so I believe it is a Maxima. It is a 3 ring beauty made in 1939. My question is - Were all star clips put on Maximas or is this pen even more rare than the normal star clip vac? Also it's color is a very light green - more of a tint than a color, not the bright green of later pens. Is this indeed a green vac or is some sort of discoloration? Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks, Dick Schwinn

eclipse pens
      1/29/2001:  einv
i know only two facts, both gleaned from the books i have: it was a canadian company that produced decent pens (but not the highest quality) in the early part of the century (20s and 30s). secondly, there are a few nice looking pens on pp.115-16 in paul erano's book on fountain pens made by eclipse. hope that's better than nothing!

Eclipse Pens
      1/29/2001:  John C
Charles: I can't answer your question, but I hope you don't mind if I ask one. Are the nibs on those eclipse flattops average sized or on the small side? Are they generally gold or plated? I have seen a few in books but none in the wild. I ask because I am interested in getting a couple of big old flattops and the flattops by the big four companies are frequently expensive. I was wondering if Eclipse flattops were perhaps a tad more affordable. TIA JC

Duofold Jr. for sale
      1/29/2001:  Charles
I have a circa 1928 Duofold Jr. in Mandarin Yellow that I am getting ready to send to eBay. I thought I would offer it here first. The pen is in VERY GOOD condition with light wear and a bit of brassing on the clip ball and one cap band. It has been professionally restored. All parts are correct. The Duofold nib is a medium stub by John Mottishaw. Asking $400 plus shipping and insurance.

re: Diplomat pen refills
      1/29/2001:  Waco Johnny D
I believe all Diplomats take standard "international" cartridges, e.g. the Pelikan TP6. They're everywhere: Staples, OfficeMax, CVS (honest!), and any other places that sell fountain pens.

If you want to mail order, try InkPalette (obvious URL). Last time I checked, their online ordering was NOT secure, but maybe that's changed by now. They give outstanding service.

Parker Jotter Ball Point
      1/29/2001:  john
I am looking for the all stainless steel Parker Jotter Point pen from the first few years (circa 1954 -56?). These are identifiable because they do not have the arrow clip, but the 'v' clip. They are slightly rectangular shaped with an indented "grove" that could be viewed as an indented "v". Does anyone know where I could find such a ball point pen?

re: Minneapolis pen hunter
      1/29/2001:  Tippi
Some helpful folks will probably be able to tell you where to look. But as a relative newcomer to pendom myself, I can say that the pen that fits best in your hand might not necessarily be a $2-300 pen. Unless that's just the amount you want to spend. I don't mean to try to dissuade you. :) But just for reference, my first fountain pen cost about $40 and all of my pens are in the $30-$120 range so far. All are smooth, good writers. There are Namikis, Omas pens, and some vintage Watermans I'd gladly spend more on if I had it, though!

Swan Pen
      1/29/2001:  Andy Hamnett
Hello. I would greatly appreciate any help in dating, naming and valuating a fountain pen in my posession. It is a swan with a 14k gold nib by mabie todd. The pen measures about 3 6/8" when closed and has the inscription "Swan Pen Made in USA" at the bottom. On the bottom of the Pen is the number 192 which is underlined, with the number 91 underneath that. The casing is a sort of orange color with cream stripes on the lid.The casing looks as if is made of many layers of plastic which create a sort of hologram effect when the pen is turned. The bladder is damaged and needs replacing, and there is no clip.I can send pictures of the pen via E-mail.Thanks Andy!

Minneapolis pen hunter
      1/29/2001:  kimberly
I recently started looking for my first fountain pen. The search has started to get frustrating as I am unable to find many resources in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. There is a Colorado Pen nearby, but they only had about 3 pens that I could try out because of the holidays and don't expect to get any others in for at least a month. I found a small store this weekend and the store owner wouldn't let me try out any of the fountain pens. My rationale is that if I'm going to spend between $200- $300 dollars I need to find the pen that is most comfortable for my hand. Am I crazy? Should I just resort to purchasing a random pen over the net? Am I missing obvious places that sell fountain pens? Help please, I would really appreciate any feedback.

FROM A BASIC COMPUTER USER: 1)If you are here on the bulletin board you will first need to hit the blue HOME button(left side of screen). When you get there hit the PEN TALK LIVE blue box on the left side of screen. This will take you to the PEN TALK LIVE page where you can enter. 2)Place mouse arrow on right side of screen (grey line) and drag down the screen so that the large white box appears in view at the bottom of the page. 3)Move mouse cursor to words "TYPE YOUR NAME" and hit left button on mouse.4) Press DELETE KEY on your keyboard until all of "TYPE YOUR NAME" words disappear from the white box.5) Now type in the name you want to use. 6)Now hit the ENTER button on your keyboard 7) Wait and you will be connected. 8) To enter a message or respond to someone on the screen all you have to do is type what you want on your keyboard. It will show up in the white box.You don't have to enter your name again it will do it automatically for you. When you are finished writing what you want to say you press the ENTER button on your keyboard and you will see your message come up on the bulletin board screen. 9)You can practice writing to yourself if nobody is there. You will find that people fly in and out of the board room very rapidly. Don't be insulted, you don't have bad breath. That is just the way some of our youth is today. Also don't be confused by some of the names people use or the spelling they present. It is all very enjoyable. It's like a big pot of ministrone soup. A mess to make but the conglomeration is delicious. They are all out there. HEAVEN HELP US!!!!!10) To leave just hit the grey LOGOUT button on right side of big white box. This will disconnect you. If this has helped I wish you well.

Esterbrook Cartridges
      1/27/2001:  Will Thorpe
Reference the Jan 18 post on cartridges for Esterbrooks. I did some highly scientific testing with various cartridges. Watermans were to long. Sheaffers are slightly to large in diameter. However standard (international) cartridges are they same length as the old Esterbrrok cartridges with the yellow ends. Both are tapered cartridges and the same diameter. The standard has a crimped neck, the Esterbrrok didn't. First pen tested was a metal cap Safari. This pen has a small well at the back of the section with a small metal protrusion down in the well. Standard cartridge went on by hand pressure just fine. Neck did not fill the well though. Second cartridge in the barrel keeps prssure on the punctured cartridge and I had no leaks. Second pen was a late model cartridge that has a plastic protrusion sticking out of the section. I touched up the protrusion with sandpaper to sharpen the edges a bit. I put on a standard cartridge by hand. Took a bit of a shove as you actually stretch the cartridge neck a bit to get it on. Barrel was to short to hold a spare cartridge. I cut a flexible Q-Tip shaft as a filler to keep pressure on the cartridge. Works just fine. I have carried and used both pens for several days incuding a couple of miles horseback. No leaks. End of report!

pens as investments
      1/26/2001:  einv
thought i'd throw in my opinion.. i feel good FPs in the 100-400 range can be viewed as investments, since a very good writer can be obtained for less than 100.in other words, if you go for an expensive fountain, you are not exactly going for its ability as a functional object. as for the MIB myth, i have always looked at such pens with suspicion. what is wrong with slight usage, iridium is a pretty hard material! and as for future value, these 'investments' pay off only if they have something delicate or rare in the workmanship itself (like filigree, etc). thus, on eBay for example, a defective waterman eyedropper with gold bands will fetch far more than a MIB waterman sky writer set even if they retailed for approx the same amount in the dollars of yesteryear.

LIMITED EDITION VALUATIONS
      1/24/2001:  Mike
Limited editions pens do have a reasonable place in our collections because they give it that extra panache that you have something that only a limited number of others may have.It gives us a good feeling when we use it or keep it sealed. We feel proud to own it and take pride in the acquisition. But to anticipate that it may have a value far in excess of its actual retail price may be slightly far too optomistic. The actual worth comes with the provenance, that special someone or something that places the pen in the middle of a situation or activity which receives great recognition.IE., A peace treaty Mont Blanc or Visconti pen that sealed a government deal. A pen that was held by the hand a woman or man involed in a tragic love affair(if they found a pen in Diana's bag, they would assume it was used to write love letters to her boyfriend or a pen from Madonna, who knows where that one was at any time)or N'sync with their crowd of hysterical fans(just to know that Justin touched it).Or even JFK, the last pen he touched in his pocket before the assassination.I believe these are the types of things which bring a pen out of the ordinary and place it on Sothby's auction table with an elevated price. If I had an unused Krone in my pocket they would probably say what the heck is this, who uses fountain pens in the 21st century. What a Dork!!But maybe there is hope!!(let's not forget that they sold the sheets the Beatles slept on in a hotel room for $10 a sqaure inch.Anyone want to buy my sheets? Real cheap $.50 a square inch. Now don't all rush at the same time!!!)

Pens as investments
      1/24/2001:  Bob S
It could well be that "collectable" LE pens will be the gold and plastic Beanie Babies of the future. I am often surprised at how much they cost compared to really fine vintage pens. I think it is important to remain aware of a pen's possible resale value, in case one wants to free up cash and space for new acquisitions, but buying them as investments the same as a mutual fund could be foolish. Pens, like homes, have value as possessions as well as investments. Would you simply sell your home because its value increased greatly? Similarly, you use but don't abuse your home, because you want to be able to continue to enjoy it and in the event of sale to gain a profit. This also applies to pens. I think use/no use is mostly a continuum, some pens I carry with me only for special occassions, some never leave the house at all.

Collecting pens as Investments
      1/24/2001:  Lee
I was recently bought a few MontBlancs meant for collections and putting them into my showcase. Those expensive pens, never used, dipped or inked is hard to start filling in the ink into those fine writing instruments. Initially, we're worry the pens will decrease in value. According to pen collectors, once you dipped the pen with ink, the value will drop 10% of the price. Worst if you use it, drop 40%. Since I have quite a number of MontBlancs, I started to write using them for my daily writing. All of the MB pens write beautifully and smooth!. Now I started using them and don't really bother about retaining their value! My point is, use these babies and you will fall in love with them! They will become your sentimental value in years to come!. Enjoy the best of the best!.

George Bush's Inauaguration pen
      1/24/2001:  James Goodwin
The pen George Bush used to sign inauguaration documents is a blue lacquer Cross Townsend selectip roller ball. It came with his signature affixed on the cap. I think that it will become his official bill signing pen for the next four years as Parker's Insignia is no longer being produced as they closed the Janesville Plant and now make all their products in England. It would not make sense for the Government to buy a Parker pen made in a foreign country over a domestically made pen made in Rhode Island by Cross.

Pelikan 120 Repair
      1/24/2001:  Wayne Smith
I have a Pelikan 120 that leaks at the barrel end, at the margin between the barrel and piston nob. The pen also does not siphon ink reliably. As far as I can tell, the problem lies in an degraded gasket on the piston stem--not tight enough against the barrel wall. Hence it doesn't draw ink well, and it lets ink ooze past to leak out. My question: Any suggestions for repair? Disassembling the pen proves fairly easy--no difficulty there. And it looks like the gasketing material is actually part of the piston stem itself. Is that correct? Otherwise, is it possible to add a rubber or silicon gasket over the stem? Or is my only option to replace the stem? Thanks. Wayne Smith pensmith@flash.net

New Pen World January issue (red cover)
      1/24/2001:  Susanna

WES Writing Equipment Society (UK) News
      1/24/2001:  Len Provisor
I've been reading the WES Journal for a while now, I really enjoy this magazine with a very wide range of subject matter that covers many interests from modern and vintage pens, and almost every kind of ephemera in between from nibs, inkwells, stationery and much more. I am a member, and ordered the 20th Anniversary LE pen made by Conway Stewart, which is the ebonite Churchill model but with a beautiful black chased finish and 18L trim. Only 200 made, about 100 sold so far. Just received news of a bit of a delay in delivery because, as stated by Don Yendle, Managing Director of Conway Stewart, "due to environmental issues in Europe relating to the production of Ebonite/Hard Rubber, all of the current makers had to cease production temporarily until clarification of the rules regarding manufacturing of this material." The anticipated delay is minor, deliveries should start again in March. WES LE, Worth the wait. Join WES, worth the read. For membership, contact Nigel Harrison at nigel@writesociety.freeserve.co.uk or see me or Sam Fiorella of Pendemonium at any upcoming Pen Shows for more info and back issues of this great publication.

Too much ink
      1/23/2001:  Raymond Wong
Bob DUNKLEY: I saw people correct the problem of excess ink flow by twisting the nib point. This can be done by holding the nib point between the nails of your thumb and index finger and twist it one way until one tine gets above the other, then twist it the other way again to balance the effect. (I think the word "tine" refers to the split part at the tip of the nib. Please correct me if I am wrong.)This usually does the trick and I just did that to my newly acquired Parker 51. Just be careful and don't twist it too hard. You may have to play around to get it the way you want it. Hope this helps.

Great new FP's, low prices
      1/23/2001:  Bruce G.
Some additions, some price reductions since last ad (couple ups too). PARKER DUOFOLD: Centennial, gray, fine (f) & medium (m), $254; International, black, f&m, jade m., gray f&m, $214. WATERMAN: Carene Deluxe, blue f&m, $139. Rhapsody SETS (fountain & ball), blue, green (my favorite, but green's always my favorite), red, $269/set. L'etalon, black f&m, $205. AURORA: Talentum black-and-gold, f&m, $169 (cartridges/converter-the 14K-nib Aurora that travels!); Mare, m., $329; Primavera, italic nib, $279. SHEAFFER Balance II, amber f., blue m., red f&m, $119. CROSS Pinnacle, burgundy, m., a handsome gold-nibbed FP from a company that seems to be backing away from gold; magnificent burgundy finish, $175. VISCONTI, Kaleido, all colors but green, f&m, these are extremely impressive for fans of large pens, much more so than any photos I've seen, $229. (Photo comment probably true for most pens!). Ask about anything else you're looking for. Ballpoints & Rollerballs may be available, e.g., AURORA green-marble Optima BP, $115; Primavera BP, $120; these pens also look immensely better than their photos. Add $5 s&h/order. Pa. residents add 6% tax.

Mike's apology
      1/23/2001:  Vicki
I accept your apology, too, Mike. LOL It was very nice and gracious and I'm sure your intent was not to come across quite so "harshly" any way. I apolgize to YOU if I chastised you too "harshly." No harm done on this best of all pen boards?

No worries :)
      1/23/2001:  Rachel
No hard feelings--I apologize for any indiscretion I may have showed in my post. I wasn't trying to have a little pity party for myself, and I will try not to post in such a candid manner if it creates tension. Thank you to all who responded to my query--I feel much more informed about purchasing my first fountain pen than I did yesterday :)

Fountain Pens As Investments
      1/23/2001:  Allan Fuld
If you think you can collect fountain pens as an investment, you would be better off going to a casino and playing the slot machines. First of all, consider the time taken in finding pens that you consider investing in. Time is money. Next, how long do you keep them before selling them? What about the expense that is incured acquiring the pens? Last, but not least; How can you get any enjoyment from all this?

APOLOGY TO RACHEL
      1/23/2001:  Mike
Rachel: Before the roof comes caving in on me from my pen lover associates I would like to take this opportunity to publicly apologize and repent for criticisms and words that may have been harsh including also an insensitivity to your situation. It could be that the true outside world is not as bright and rosy as it may appear to me at times.I am sorry if I have offended you in any way. Apology accepted, I will be more sensitive in the future.

My goodness, Mike!
      1/23/2001:  Vicki
Rachel seemed to pluck your last nerve this morning! You seemed a bit harsh (although you did soften as your post went along). Do you really find it so impossible that a person with good spelling skills and is reasonably articulate might not have a high-paying job? And should be able to immediately go out and get one? (I wish!) I certainly didn't think she "was putting on a show" or "bringing in her personal business of distress." She was merely doing what most of us do here: asking knowledgeable pen people a reasonable question, one that many nice folks here can answer for her. How is this "not for real"? It's good, for her first time visit, that she did, indeed, get some pleasant responses.

Are You For Real?
      1/23/2001:  Mike is Concerned !!
Rachael: Unlike the other respondents to your writing I don't believe many of the words that you have written. No person with your expressive writing skills(and your spelling is excellent too!) could be in such a miserable position where claims of poverty prevail and yet you are writing with fountain pens, presumably on your job, and looking to move to a higher pen class.I would think that other items would be a first priority!!!As far as the brass inkwell you probably saw it in the Colorado pen catalog.Using Grandma's money for this purchase is a very noble thought indeed and for that I will give you credit. Also your caring of the gift your husband gave you was very touching. So you see I don't think evertything is all negative. However, judging from the responses you got, you can see that we are basically a nice group of people who don't have to put on a show for anyone or bring in our personal business of distress(unless it is with our purchases or selection of pens). With this in mind I'm glad you found this site and welcome as a participant!May I also suggest you look around for a position which will utilize your high level writing and verbal skills and probably increase your personal success. Good Luck with you new pen acquisition whatever you decide upon.(I am a participant to this web site as well, so you can say that this is only one man's opinion)

Fountain Pens as Investments
      1/23/2001:  Jim Mamoulides
Ok, here's a fire starter. There are reasons to buy / collect / hoard fine pens. In my experience collecting both new and vintage pens, most pens bought at market or retail aren't appreciating much or especially with new pens, are depreciating, principally as discounts are available. Vintage pens certainly have increased in value over time, but in real terms? Probably not as much as say, the stock market. And don't forget, many older collectors have stories from the not too distant past where they were buying pens literally by the box full. The current strength of the pen market, in my humble opinion, seems to be running in parallel with the strength of the economy, which is greasing a lot of luxury purchases and, given a downturn, could sink a lot of the current interest in fine pens. Not to put down LEs, but frankly, the risk is that they will carry long term value any better than Franklin Mint LEs. Also, there is no guarantee that the valuation of todays pens will hold. Look at the collapse of the baseball card market as a example. So my point (after all that) is: buy what you like and enjoy it. Don't worry about future values. If you are buying fine pens as an investment, pick something else.

Re: A.T. Cross Townsend F.P.
      1/23/2001:  Jim Mamoulides
I have several Cross fountain pens, and currently two Townsends, the Medalist and the Lapis. First, please try out the pen before you buy it. If you can't dip it, at least dry write with it to get a sense of weight and balance. The Townsend is a very large and heavy pen and is not suited for every hand. With that out of the way, let me sing the praises of the Townsend. If you are concerned about price, the good news is that for about US $100, the lower end Townsends are a real value. The pens use Pelikan made nibs that are silky smooth, somewhat flexible, and put down a nice, even and wet line. In spite of their weight, they post securely with a gasket snap (a great idea!), and are well balanced. I have a lot of expensive pens and my Townsend Medalist gets in my regular rotation very frequently. It starts up consistently and without a lot of ink discoloration even after sitting for weeks. As to finishes, some Cross finishes fare better under use than others. The highly polished finishes, in my experience, hold up really well, except that they are very prone to light scratches, so take care where you set these pens down. The painted and sterling finishes seem to be a bit less fussy. With any really nice pen, you will find that treating them well and taking heed of how they are handled are the best ways to keep them as close to new looking as possible. I think the Townsend is an excellent choice. I hope you enjoy yours.

Parker puts too much ink on page
      1/23/2001:  Bob Dunkley
I have a Parker 51 (UK Manufacture) and a Parker 65 Consort. Both of these seem to put too much ink on the page. Is it possible to remedy this without turning the pens over to a repairer? TIR Bob Dunkley Leeds UK

Schwan-STABILiner 808
      1/23/2001:  SK Bitner
While I love my fountain pens, on occasion I do need to use a ball point. Unfortunately, I'm down to my last 2 Schwan-STABILiner 808's. I tried the German company via the net and they said that the pen has been discontined. It is a whitish plastic stick pen with the most wonderful ink. Can anyone help me find a supply? My efforts with US companies have drawn a blank. In the alternative, perhaps someone can help me track down the ink supplier. I know, this is a real nerdy request. But pen freaks must know what I'm going through! All the best.

Can't Find Information
      1/22/2001:  Louie
Help. I recently acquired a Fountain Pen that is marked Patd. on clip and DELACO - Gold Filled Patd. Pend. on Barrel. I can't find any information on this company or when this fountain pen was made. It has a lever fill and the sac seems to be pliable. Cap screws on. Nib reads Warranted 14K. Send me an email if you have any information, Any help would be appreciated.

Cross Pens
      1/22/2001:  John
According to a news release today by Cross (check Yahoo finance news) the pens Pres. Bush used to sign the documents shortly after his inauguration were special edition blue Townsends. Re Townsend fountain pens -- I have one, a black laquer, and it writes well; my only complaint is that it is a big and heavy pen. It is about an half inch longer than the Radiance, and, to me, at least, obviously heavier. Rachel, before you buy one you might want to see if you can try one in person to make sure you like it.

Re-sacing a 51
      1/22/2001:  Stephen Lam
I think before Rick invests in a copy of Dubiel's book and the necessary tools to do a good sac replacement, he should consider whether that is going to be the first of many sac replacements that he is going to make. To do a good job of it, you need at least a vacumatic tool which costs up to $50. Add that to the cost of the book. If Rick is not going to resac another 51 or vacumatic for years to come, then it is more sensible to send it to a repairperson who may be able to do it a lot cheaper. Another point to remember is that one may damage quite a few pens before one perfects the skills of re-sacing.

Sac the 51 with Da Book
      1/22/2001:  Dean
Rick, here goes some raw commercialism. First where to get the sacs was covered a few posts down so you can scroll down for that info. If you would like to do this repair/restoration yourself, and you certainly can without too much effort, you should get a copy of “Da Book” by Frank Dubiel. You can get this from Pendemonium or Fountain Pen Hospital by clicking on their banners on Penlovers. Da Book will give you all the information on how to fix your Parker 51 as well as many other pens, probably for less $$ than you have invested in the 51. As for heat to loosen the pen in the past I’ve used a cigarette lighter, candle, stovetop burner, kerosene lamp, and heat gun, with the kerosene lamp being your best choice. So spend the $25 bucks on “Da Book”, Both FPH and Pendemonium will know what you are talking about, and let us know the results. To everyone whom has seen this commercialism before, Sorry but I couldn't resist this time (LOL),Dean

Parker 51 new sac
      1/22/2001:  Rick Kalamaya
I noticed on this board recently that the Parker 51 was voted the best vintage pen. Relying on this and the fact that they were being made when I was born (1945) I got a nice one in an auction. And I have noticed that in the pen sites I have visited one needs to heat the pen to get it apart to replace the sac. The sac in my pen seems to be history so I was wondering if some of you have replaced the sac yourselves? Is it risky to do so? And if you do your own work, how do you do it and where do you get the sac? The pen does write nicely and it would be nice to have it with me. Thanks

A.T. Cross Townsend F.P.
      1/22/2001:  Rachel
Hi :) I was wondering if anyone uses a Cross townsend pen on a regular basis...I am not really a collector, (too poor!), just an enthusiast. My fiance gave me my first fountain pen for Christmas last year, a Cross Radiance, and it has served as a wonderful introduction to fountain pens. I'd like to get a slightly more expensive pen for heavy use (I'd like to pamper my first one, since it was a special gift) The pen I'm planning on buying is a Cross Townsend...but I have a few questions before I spend so much money (for me anyways--I'm sure you collectors spend many times that without much thought ;) I think I read somewhere that the finish on the titanium pen tends to wear off with heavy use--has anyone experienced this? I expect it to show some signs of wear, but I don't want it to look really bad after only a year or two--I likely won't be able to afford to replace it for five or six years. For a heavy-use pen, is a laquer finish better than a metal coating? Also, a little side question, does any one know of a company that makes modern inkwells? I'm not really interested in buying an antique ($$$) ...just a nice basic inkwell. I saw a beautiful brass one in a pen catalogue before Christmas, but the catalogue has dissapeared without a trace :( I thought it might be neat to use my grandparents christmas money towards that, so I'd have something special to remember them by after they are gone. Thanks for the help--I was so excited to discover this site! :)

President's Pen
      1/22/2001:  Mike
I thought I caught a glimpse of the white MB star on top of the blue pen with the engraving on the barrel. MB makes a nib which is only used for signatures. It is either the BB or the OBB(this one writes on an angle)The line is enormous. It's the one Trump uses when you see that massive wide signature in the ads.Rest assured it's future worth will be higher than any profit I could make if I held a pen 50 years. Is someone familiar with signature nibs and can add information? We would all appreciate it.

re: George W's pen
      1/22/2001:  Waco Johnny D
I could've sworn those pens were made by Cross. I didn't even know they made fiber tips but I can't see anything else laying down such a wide line. On my crummy TV they looked blue (PLEEEEZE don't anyone tell me they were those nice Lapis pens).

MB 149 clip "serial number"
      1/22/2001:  Stephen Lam
I don't think that is a serial number. More likely, it is a patent number or a part number. Of the MB149s I have owned, some have numbers on their clips while others don't. I have not paid enough attention to it to find a pattern of their occurrence. In any case, what is the worth of such a number when the part itself can be easily interchanged !!

George W.
      1/21/2001:  Mike Rosen
According to something I read, George W. favors felt tip pens. I saw him signing some executive orders on the news today, using a separate pen for each order. (He seemed to concentrate more on the pen than the paper he was signing.) I could not tell the brand though. They appeared to be somewhat slender. Maybe they are 'Flairs' left over from the 70's, collected during his formative years.

Cheers.

Mont Blanc 149 Serial #

I'm not sure but I think the serial # on a Mont Blanc is on the gold band on the cap or on a gold band some where.

Mont Blanc 149
      1/21/2001:  Bob A.
Hello, I just discovered this site and I have a question. I purchased a Mont Blanc 149 about 5 years ago. It has been my daily writer for much of that time and I have not experienced any problems whatsoever-no leaks, etc. The pen writes beautifully! However, in searching the internet for pen info I noticed that authorized dealers make a big deal about serial numbers in the clip. My pen has none. Does this mean its a fake? When did they start using serial numbers. If it is a fake, I've been spared the problems noted in many of these postings. Thanks for any info, Bob A.

Re: Esterbrook sacs

Unless you really need sacs that actually have "Esterbrook" printed on them, send mail to PenSacs@aol.com - plastic Esterbrooks take a standard no. 16 straight sac.

Limited Editions
      1/20/2001:  Jeff
The Limited Edition scam is the smartest thing pen manufacturers have done since the quill. Imagine, a MB Proust fountain for upwards near $550, and there were ONLY 22,000 made! The MB Voltaire FP was limited to ONLY 15,000. Then I have to laugh at a pen that you can buy anywhere (ebay: $170 tops), the Visconti Kaliedo. Gee, they only made 500 in each color. Who did the counting? And then there's the "rare, hard-to-find" Retro 51 Abbondanza 2000 with only 351 Pens worldwide. Its price? Just $139. As far as using them, I say ink 'em up and enjoy. You probably paid too much, so you might as well use it.

Limited Editions
      1/20/2001:  Richard Engel
The issue of using limited editions brings up another question that has been on my mind. I find it upsetting that many limited edition pens have little that is special about them aside from being produced in small numbers. They are often not made of any more precious materials or with greater craftsmanship than pens of unlimited production, yet because there are few of them, mark-up is out of this world. Take for example the Pelikan Green Demonstrator or Blue Ocean. Maybe a different color of plastic is used but are these not the exact same pens as normal Pelikan M800's? And for this we pay five or ten times more. If the reverse were true, and the Blue Ocean and Green Demonstrator were the normal production pens and the normal green stripe was produced and marketed as a special limited edition, the prices would be reversed as well and the green stripe would somehow be the more exciting pen to own. But would it not look and write the same? And would it not cost Pelikan the same twelve dollars or whatever to produce? This sort of thing makes me feel like we are poor saps at the mercy of pen company marketing.

Be daring! Use your fountain pen to do the Crossword Puzzle.

LE pens as investment
      1/20/2001:  Stephen Lam
As a subject related to the question whether a LE pen should be used, I like to make the observation that buying LE pens as investment is not a smart move, unless you have a hugely discounted source of such pens. Of the Montblanc LEs, I believe only the Hemingway FP and the Medici, which have appreciated quite a bit and which are still attracting buyers regularly. The others, even the other Montblancs, are not doing so well. If you have money to invest and expect it to grow, I would stay away from LEs, especially brands turning out LEs continuously.

Pentalk Live!

“Pentalk Live!” is up and running, but I have been down and offline for the last few days. How about we try to congregate in the chat room tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon say around 2:00 PST or 5:00 EST, I’ll do my best to be around for a couple of hours. Could also be available later in the evening. If you haven’t been to the chat room it is lots of fun and quite lively when there are several folks in there, just click on “Pentalk Live” on Penlovers home page. Dean

Looking for Conway Stewart clip
      1/20/2001:  Bruce
I recently acquired an old 20's mottled hard rubber Conway Stewart, but missing the clip. Hoping someone may have one. This pen is 5 3/8" long, 9/16" wide at cap. There are two horizontal slits for the clip. Picture can be seen at http://www.netcom.com/~brunoh/CS.jpg. If anyone knows a model number or any other info on this pen, it would be appreciated. There is no visible imprint (may be worn off). The nib is DURO. Thanks!

Using Your LE Pen
      1/20/2001:  Dean
I agree with what appears to be the consensus of the group that yes you should use the Limited Edition pen you received as a gift. The pen was given to you to enjoy out of the goodness of another persons heart. Looking at it as an investment that is another issue that could prompt me to do a piece for the next Stylophiles, “Investing in Pens, is it Possible?”. One further thought, yes use the expensive LE that you received but that does not mean abuse it. This is not a pen to throw in the bottom of your briefcase. Dean

Using LE pens
      1/20/2001:  Ron
OF COURSE you should use it! You did, and I say "good for you!" Look at it this way.....did the person who gave it to you do so thinking of your financial future, or did they do so to give you a pen that would please you and be a delight to use? Some might say that I'm nuts, but if I won't use a pen, I won't buy it or keep it.

Who Clinton Forgot to Pardon!
      1/20/2001:  Mike
1) All the Mont Blanc assembly line workers who didn't do their job correctly causing undue stress with non functioning pens. 2) The nib grinders who should have worn their glasses but didn't. 3)Ink companies whose consistencies were never equal. 4)pen sellers who misrepresented their wares and left the buyer holding the box. 5)All those who thought their bargains were "out of sight". 6)AND FINAllY, for all of us who fight the establishment and try to hold on to the grace and charm of yesteryear, by signing our documents with a fine writing instrument, for us Mr. President no pardon is necessary.

Using vintage MB 149
      1/20/2001:  Bill Riepl
The 149 is a fine pen, nothing wrong with 'em at all. I have one about five years old that I use regularly at work, and a very early production from the 50s. While I don't use the vintage one every day, mainly because it's one of the centerpieces of my collection, and my job can be a bit rough, I see no reason why it wouldn not be agreat choice as an everyday pen. Sturdy construction, holds a ton of ink, and has a wonderful flex nib. Nothing wrong with that! The only real problem with them is the price, expect to pay around $600 or more for one in good condition.

I will be out of town for a few days, so you might e-mail Sam first, you'll get a quicker reply. Looking forward to seeing a lot of you in LA -- Melissa

MB149 as a user pen
      1/20/2001:  Stephen Lam
I have been using a MB149 for over twenty years now. It is the one with two silver and one gold cap band, and the two tone nib with the gold in between the silver. Anyway, just to let you know the kind of pen I am talking about. It is a well-built and very reliable piece of writing instrument which has not given me any problem. However, whether you will find MB149 as a good daily user depends on your liking for a pen of such girth. If you have a small hand, you may find it a chore to write with this pen, as many of my colleagues have pointed out. If however the size fits you, a vintage MB149 is a good choice.

Seeking Your Advice
      1/19/2001:  Bernie
Feedback received from my post of 18 Jan indicates that a vintage MB 149 may not be as wise a selection for everyday use as certain other makes. Would anyone experienced with a vintage MB 149 mind commenting on its reliability, quality of construction and value? I would also appreciate any recommendations you might have in lieu of the MB 149. Much appreciation for your thoughts.

Using Limited Edition Pens
      1/19/2001:  Will Thorpe
Oh my gosh! You used an Omas Lucens! What a foolish thing to do. I'm sure it has absolutely no value at all now. Do you realize that the whle world is laughng at you and whispering behind your back "he used an Omas Lucens LE". I want to help you avoid any future embarrassment and to restore your reputation. So I will generously offer to take the worthless thing off your hands for $100. Email me immediately with your address and I'll send you a certified check. Just think in a couple of days you'll start to sleep better having overcome such a social blunder just because I came to your rescue. Pay no attention to other comments or offers to help, only I have the real healing power. No thanks needed, I'm just here to help.

Using a Limited Edition Pen

The value of some things is in their use. Fountain pens are such. No use, no value.

LE Pens
      1/19/2001:  Willis Brown
Pens are meant to be used. If you get pleasure from it and take good care of it, don't worry. I can understand buying and holding stocks as an investment. I just don't understand holding pens as an investment.

Using a limited edition pen
      1/19/2001:  Bill Brenner
I received an Omas Extra Lucens pen for Christmas. I was delighted, and filled it up and began using it. Subsequently, people have told me that it is foolish to do this, and that I should have kept the pen as an investment. Have I been a fool?

Spencerian Script
      1/19/2001:  Karmann
Michael-Spencerian Script generally requires an Oblique nib holder (as in the Speedball dip pen variety). The nib is off set at a 45* angle. You can go to just about any art store and get a Speedball Textbook, and it will have an example of Spencerian Script. If you can't find one, let me know and I'll scan some and send it to you. Regards, Karmann

Spencarian Handwriting/52-degree nib
      1/19/2001:  Michael Demeyer
Stipula indicates that they have a 52-degree nib that is stated as being ideal for 'Spencarian' handwriting technique. I have looked high and low to find more info on this technique, but came up empty. Anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Seeking Vintage MB 149
      1/18/2001:  Bernie
I am seeking to acquire a vintage MB 149 in top condition. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thank You Dr.NIB
      1/18/2001:  Mike
Your explanation of MB's service policy was excellent and greatly appreciated. It is a trade off between discount pricing with no service and full price with 1 year of service. Hopefully nothing will happen during the first year so your discount price will be your gain and money in your pocket. After one year it doesn't matter because you pay for service under either condition of purchase. Thanks again for your clarification. I'll keep my pens bright and shiny and hope they reward me with at least one year of good service before going nuts. After all I gave them a better home then being locked inside a box!!!

old pens!!!
      1/18/2001:  Shawn
I recently purchased two, five gallon buckets of old pens from a man that was 84 years old and had collected these pens most of his life. Most of these pens look very unique to me, there are fountain pens, advertising pens, pens shaped like objects(ladies leg, guns etc.) and I am looking for someone to tell me how I can find out the value of them.

tassie
      1/18/2001:  fred kozub
I recently acquired a very nice Parker 51-dark green, brushed SS cap, standard size but alas, no jewel or tassie. I believe this pen takes a grey-pearlish one. Does anyone have one that I might purchase? I look forward to hearing from you. FJK

Esterbrook ink cartridges
      1/18/2001:  Doug Isokait
I have a mid-1950's Esterbrook cartrige pen, the kind accommodating two small cartridges in the barrell. Is there a source for these cartridges or currently manufactured ones that will fit this pen?

Italian Pen
      1/18/2001:  Will Thorpe
Recently acquired an Italian Flat Top celluloid (dark blue and cream swirl). Pen is button filler (pressure bar) and marked UTENSILI BPB Torino with VIA ARTISTI 15 - TEL. 82546 on the second line. Nib marked ASTURA IIOVA IRIDIUM 3. Nib was plated or gold wasshed at one time. Cap has three bands at lip. Clip is a big (that's as in BIG)gold Feather clip obviously designed to make you think this is a Parker. I cleaned it up, new sac, smoothed the nib, and it writes beautifully. Any ideas on the age? My guess is the 1930's. Pretty nice advertising product!

MB 149 repair
      1/18/2001:  Michael R.
Dear Raymond, I don't know any MB repair adresses outside of Germany (sorry), but try to get in contact with John Mottishaw, he might help you if you don't want to bother the MB factory service. (I've heard only positive comments about him yet). I think it's not easy to rewmove a Meisterstück nip (144,146,149,...) because I've heard that MB uses a speacial tool (no idea what it looks like) to remove the nip units; I've heart too that even they (the MB people) break a pen once in a while replacing nip? (only a rumor???). I had similar problems with the piston leaking on some older style 60's MB and heard of this problem a lot but don't know exactly what causes this problems. ( I got it repaired but it only worked on one pen! the other still leaks) Good luck

MB piston repair

Chicago Pen Show Tables
      1/17/2001:  Don Lavin
It appears that many of our exhibitors from the West coast have not received their invitation for exhibitor's tables for the upcoming show in May. If any subscriber exhibited at our show last year and has not yet received his or her table invitation please get back to me at this time as I have a waiting list for tables and we are planning on assigning tables to new exhibitors in early February. While I am on the subject of the Chicago Pen Show, let it be known that our auctions consignments are pouring in and we are now assured of another fine and interesting auction. If any subscriber is interested in making a consignment please contact me or Mike Fultz at this time so that we can evaluate your request. We try to avoid duplicates in the auction and we attempt to obtain a good cross section of material from all eras and in all price ranges so we are not necessarily looking for the biggest and best pens (although we do enjoy receiving them). We really like good vintage pens in exc. condition from fine makers preferably in working condition. Don

cleaning pens
      1/17/2001:  Kristi
Dean, I always flush out my pens with distilled water. Tap water here is practically rocky so it is usable for exterior rinsing. But I use the bottled stuff for flushing and final exterior clean up.

Pentalk Live!
      1/16/2001:  Dean
This is a response to Mike and others that have been in the Pentalk Live chat room. At this point in time I have chosen to leave the room open at all times, because of how this is hosted on my web server it shares space with other chatrooms. And I guess like all chatrooms people jump from one room to another not knowing what type of room it is. Most will leave when they realize that you are talking about a subject that they are not interested in. Or you can choose to “ignore them by hi-lighting their name and clicking the “Ignore User” button. I am looking into having the chatroom on a non-public server and will let you know of the progress. Also I’ll be adding some information on the Pentalk Live page explaining how some of the features work. Another thought is to have times announced in advance when there will be a Pentalk Live chat session so that others will know when they can find a group of Penlovers in the chatroom. Your thoughts are welcome and will be considered. Dean

Cleaning Pens for Storage?
      1/16/2001:  Dean
My last post brings me to the subject of this post. When you decide to take a pen out of your rotation say for several months. What do you do in terms of cleaning etc., before that pen goes into storage in your pen box, cabinet, display case, closet, etc.? I usually, and this goes for vintage and modern pens, completely flush all ink out with water. Then I disassemble the pen as much as possible for further cleaning, and then either dry or air dry the parts before reassembly. Is this all necessary? I’ve heard that in some cases it would be wise to remove the sac if the pen has one. Any thoughts? Dean

Lamy Service
      1/16/2001:  Dean
My hats off to Hampton-Haddon Marketing Corp. the US distributor of Lamy Pens. I have a couple of Lamy 2000 fountain pens and while flushing/cleaning one of them I lost down the drain the little cap retaining ring. After disassembling the P-trap in the sink and realizing that the thing went to the sewers and several cuss word and band aids later. I decided to call Hampton-Haddon and see if I could get an replacement. I talked with their repair department and explained that the sink had tried to eat my pen but was only able to get the little cap retaining ring. They said no problem that they would mail me a replacement at no cost, how lucky I was. And today not only did I receive the new retaining ring but they sent me three of them, they must know that I will at some time wash another one away. Dean

Removing Pelikan Nib
      1/16/2001:  Hay
Tom, The nib and feed are screwed into the section. Removing is therefore simply by unscrewing. Disassembly of the nib and feed will require use of "section block" and punch to pop the feed out of the threaded retaining ring. The gold alloy nib is then free. HTH Haywood

Removing Pelikan Nib
      1/16/2001:  Tom
This is probably a dumb question--I dropped my old Pelikan 140 and the body shattered. I now would like to salvage the very nice M 14C/.585 nib--how do I remove it? If it just pulls out, it takes more wrestling than I'm willing to do without knowing for sure what I'm doing! :-o Thanks in advance for any advice! - Tom

Pen Talk LIVE
      1/16/2001:  Mike
DEAN: I've visited your new site quite a few times and the connection is good. However I have spoken about-auto racing, weather, cigarette taxes, the oval office, monica, pizza, and almost everything else imaginable. One person had a BIC pen, one thought that MB SS 146 was a secret code. There was one person at the beginning who came from Switzerland and considered my mechanical gilded bird cage with over a 1000 parts to be typical of a tourist purchase, indicating it may have been a low class acquisition. After all besides watches and medical instruments do the Swiss have a monumental impact on the economy besides being a storage vault for the world's money?I am hoping that eventually the site will narrow in. But for now I am learning much from the youth of the world. They do have something to offer.

re: MB refills
      1/15/2001:  Waco Johnny D
Another vote for the Namiki refill, which beats everything I've tried with a rolling ball for smoothness, including the 1.0mm UniBall gel refill, which is no mean feat. It's a world apart from everything I've ever used. If, however, you require some rolling resistance for your handwriting to "work right," this may not be the refill for you since it has almost none. I was brought up on Paper Mates (ugh) and the Namaki sure took some getting used to.

MB refills
      1/13/2001:  Liz Moore
My favorite ballpoint refill is the Namiki double broad ballpoint. It writes like a dream. Blows MB out of the water! I adapt them to my MBs and some other pens by cutting the back of a parker refill off and sticking a wire or nail in the middle of it to go into the hole in the back of the Namiki refill. You can also do this with a piece of dowel that is the same width as the refill. Just cut it to the right length. You may need to take the spring out of a parker jotter to get the whole thing to wrk right. Good luck! You have got to try Namikis!

15 years ago, I bought a Pilot Pen Hi-tecpoint rollerball pen in Singapore. This should not be confused with the hi-tecpoint being sold nowadays in Europe. It's signficantly higher end. I still have refills for the pen BXS-5T. Unfortunately, I lost the pen. If anyone knows where I could find/purchase one, I would really appreciate it If he/she could let me know. Thanks. Alex

Waterman swap
      1/13/2001:  Wayne Hayes
I have a Waterman Carene Deluxe FP in silver and black with a medium nib, new in box with papers. I need to find someone willing to swap it for a Carene ball point in any of its colors or variants. I don't care if it is a deluxe or not. It just needs to be in very good to excellent condition. Anyone interested please contact. Thanks.

Selling Pens
      1/13/2001:  Ken
I'm new to this and have 2 pens I'm interested in selling. I've check out ebay and penbid and will use them if they're my only alternative but would like to see if I can interest someone on this list first or get some suggestions from the other members about where or how to best sell the pens. The 2 pens are: 1. Namiki Bald Eagle. #500 of 700. Complete with cases and papers Never used. Asking $1300. 2. Montegrappa Historia Parchment. #175 of 1000. Complete with box and Montegrappa History book. Never used. Asking $350. I have pictures of both for anyone who's interested. Like I said, I'm new at this, and this is my first attempt at selling pens, and I hope I get some feedback (or even a buyer). Thanks for listening. Ken.

Pen Investments
      1/12/2001:  Mike
MARTIN ROBERTS: Since there are only 2000 Mont Blanc "Carl The Great" Pens available, a sellout would put the pen at a premium and thus afford you the opportunity to make a substantial profit. Most LE fountain pens have a basic value and in this case if you have more than 2000 customers who want your product - BINGO- you make a profit.Sometimes it takes quite a period of time for total distribution to take place. You can check with various sellers and find out if the pen has sold out or is selling slowly. Since this pen is new its appreciation will be relative to demand.

mystery pen
      1/12/2001:  kahlaree
I need some help. My boss is wanting me to find out what kind of pen he purchased from a shop in London that had Japanese writing on it. It's made of a translucent plastic with liquid black ink. It's a rollerball. He said it was relatively inexpensive, and I just wondered if anyone had any insight as to where I could find some info about this pen. Thank you!

RHR Duo FS
      1/12/2001:  Bill Riepl
OK, OK..... I hate to do it, especially since it just got back, but.... I have a medium imprint red hard rubber Duofold senior for sale. Basically, if I want to BOTH get to the LA show, and sleep in a hotel room, I have to sell a few pens. Budgets are a terrible thing, I think I should have been a government! In what I would call very good condition, just short of excellent. Did I say just back? That's as in "just back from the masterful hands of Hal Arnold" who has done a superb job of restoring this pen. So, if you want a Duofold Big Red that's not only a cut above the rest in terms of the model (medium imprints are much tougher to find than the later small imprint models, although not as desireable as the earliest large imprint models) but also a cut above the rest in terms of quality (anyone who's seen Hal's work can attest to this!) email now! $300, includes shipping.

Typhoo pen

I was given a pen that was given away as a promotional item by the Typhoo tea company in the late 1920s.It is a plastic type, with a 14carat gold medium nib, and came in an orange box with the typhoo logo in black. The pen is a mottled brown/red colour. Can anybody give me any more information about it?. Thanks ken

The newest feature on Penlovers will be online this weekend, “Pentalk Live”. This is a live chat room where you can meet up and chat with your pen friends online. A few of us tested the software last night and the consensus was that it worked great. Look for the “Pentalk Live” link on Penlovers homepage, click it and then log into the chat room, simple as that. I will post details here when I expect the link to be working and the chat room to debut. Dean

Looking for parts (in all the wrong places)
      1/11/2001:  Custar
I am looking for some parts. If you have them, please respond to custar@telepath.com so we can discuss money. I am looking for the following: 1) Whole blind cap or just the blind cap tassie for a pre-war full-size vacumatic. I need the tassie to be gold-filled, not nickel-plated. I don't care about the color or condition of the blind cap so long as the tassie is GF and unbrassed. I should add that this it to complete a speedline filler, not a lockdown filler (which would probably have a larger diameter tassie). 2) Whole cap or complete clip assembly for post-war silver pearl debutante size vacumatic. I have a silver pearl deb in working order, but the entire clip assembly is missing. Therefore, the clip needs to be in the nickel finish, not GF. I would prefer a clip with a blue diamond, but that is not totally necessary. 3) Cap for silver pearl striped Sheaffer Balance 1250. This pen has a conical nib and measures just about 5 inches, so it is not one of the original Balances. Rather, it dates to the mid- to late 40's. To help identification, all these pens had a cap band that extended to the bottom of the cap, and the cap threads on the cap and on the barrel were metal. If you have an entire pen that matches the description but does not work, I would be glad to talk about buying the entire pen. One fully working pen is better than two that don't work. 4) Moore Maniflex nib, size 5, so long as the iridium is present on both tines. Any help would be appreciated. Custar

Line Density and Hue
      1/11/2001:  Mike
MARK: I have the Sterling Mozart with the Medium nib and I find that it lays down a very dense, heavier line of ink,not necessarily thicker or wider but just more ink in the same width. This gives the appearance of a dark rich color. I happen to use Florida blue Waterman ink.As you expand the width of the line with the broad point you spread the ink thinner in the same area which will give the appearance of a lighter color and tend to make it look less intense and possibly give a paler hue. When people do calligraphy the special point lays down an equal quantity of ink regardless of how the point is turned. That is why the letters are so striking whether coming down or curving at the top and bottom. I hope this response has some merit, I am sure there is a more scientific explanation which will be forthcoming.

bold nib writes differently
      1/11/2001:  Tippi
I have one broad nib pen (all the rest are medium or medium-fine). I noticed that the broad nib made my Waterman blue ink paler than the other pens in which I use the same ink. It's nothing wrong with the nib, I just need to use different ink with it. I don't know yet what that ink will be, but it's fun to experiment!

Pelikan ballpoint

bold nib writes differently 2
      1/11/2001:  Mark
BTW, the nib size is not the only difference between the two pens. The new one with the bold nib is an ST Dupont Fidelio where as the one I already had with the med nib is a MontBlanc Meisterstuck Mozart. Could this be something particular to the Fidelio nibs? Thanks.

bold nib writes differently?
      1/11/2001:  Mark
Hello, I recently purchased a pen with a bold nib. What I'm noticing is that when I write with this pen with black ink, the ink on the page looks more like it is grey (the identical ink cartridge in another pen with a medium nib looks just fine). The only other difference between the pens is that the older one I have with the med nib was a store model and was a bit broken in. So is this greyish looking ink a result of the pen not being broken in or the nib being bold rather than medium? Or is it probably an indication that the nib is bad or damaged in some way??? Thanks!

I have nothing against "Modern Pens", but I think that we who collect vintage pens have an advantage. Not only do we amass a collection, but we also get to use all of the pens we collect. By the way, I just happen to have a few Flattop Sheaffers and Two Gregg Sheaffers on my trading pile.

Henry Simpole in London
      1/10/2001:  Raymond Wong
KRISTI: If you are in London over a Saturday, don't forget to visit the Portobello Street antigue fair. And before you buy any pens, don't forget to visit Henry Simpole (Henry the Pen Man). His price is good and he loves pens. He booth is inside the Admiral Vernon Arcade. His phone/fax number is 020-85303277. (Fax him for a map if necessary) When I was there last summer, I spent a full hours with him and I would have spent longer if I could.

I'm looking for 3 or 4 of you that would like to help me test the new feature that will soon be on Penlovers. "Pentalk Live" this will be a live chatroom where folks can get together and talk pens. Looking at doing the test around 8:30 PST so if you'd like to help out please send me an email offline and I'll send you the link and information.

PCA Web Museum Project Needs Your Help!
      1/10/2001:  Melissa Lowry
Imagine accessing an online resource containing images and information about thousands of vintage writing instruments. Imagine being able to research your pen finds on a searchable photographic database. Imagine seeing the jewels of some of the pen world’s greatest collections from your computer. As many of you PCA members already know, the establishment of a Web Museum for the preservation of pen images and information is a project that has been in the works for some time. There has been great interest in offering pens for inclusion in this enormous undertaking. But creating a Web Museum of this size and scope will require financial assistance as well. PCA is in need of its own camera and equipment, in order set up a photo operation at every pen show. I have volunteered to spearhead a campaign to fund the purchase of digital camera equipment for the Web Museum Project. One of our first fund raising projects will be a silent auction at the Los Angeles Pen Show on Sunday, February 18, 2001. We are seeking donations of writing instruments, ephemera and memorabilia. If you would like to provide an item for the auction, or make a cash donation to the Web Museum Project, please e-mail me. I would like to invite everyone take part in this effort to get the Web Museum Project moving forward. PCA is a non-profit organization which depends on members and friends for support, and if you have not yet joined, please take time to check out the PCA web site at www.pencollectors.com to see what you’re missing! Thanks to all who have already offered to help in this phase of building the Web Museum! Melissa

Parker Frontier Demonstrator
      1/10/2001:  Sheldon
I have a pen which has a transparent barrel and is a cartridge/converter fill with a steel cap with gold colored clip. It is a Parker with a Parker nib but on the rim of the clip, directly below the tip of the Parker arrow, it is marked "Parker Frontier" along with the Parker logo. On the other side of the cap, at the bottom it says "Made in USA" and the number 111E. In all my reference books, I can't find any mention of a Parker Frontier. Can anyone give me any info on this pen? Thanks in advance for your help.

Mixing inks - now why would anybody want to do that ??
      1/9/2001:  Stephen Lam
Mixing inks to get unique colours is an interesting idea. I use Parker inks (boring), sometimes Skrip and on occasions Omas, Pelikan and Montblanc (blue black, turquoise and royal blue) without actually rinsing my pen before changing colour or brand. Fortunately, they have not suffered any clogging. I guess, if you really want to play it safe, you can mix your ink in a test-tube (or something similar), allow it to stand for a couple of days and see if there is any precipitate. If it stays clear, you should be able to use it without fear of cloggin.

Mixing Inks
      1/9/2001:  Raymond Wong
I would like to play around with mixing inks. Is there any danger of creating something that would clog up a pen more easily than the original inks?

Zeppelin FPs For Sale
      1/9/2001:  Alan S. Hirsch
Here is an excellent opportunity to get an everyday pen at a great price. These Zeppelins are MIB. Silver plate, with enamelled cap (mostly black and a few blues). Nibs are rhodium plated stainless steel with excellent irridium tip. All have M nibs...softly they write F-M; medium pressure a true M; and press down and you have a broad. Nice and spongey. These are long (about 5 3/4" capped); and hefty. A great buy at $75 delivered to any U.S. address. I believe that once these are gone I won't be able to get any more, so act quickly. Thanks, Alan

Mylar Disks - Nib Smoothing
      1/9/2001:  Will Thorpe
OK, remember our December discussions regarding smoothing nibs with 2000 grit and 2500 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Bruce encouraged me to spend the $25.00 and get the Mylar Disks from David Nishimura. So I did. So I got them yesterday. They are about the size of a big pancake, bigger than I expected anyway. I put one to the test last night. My assessment after spending $25 plus shipping is thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU VERY MUCH BRUCE AND DAVID! They are wonderful. I worked over one 1932 Sheaffer, a 1920's DIXIE with original nib, a 1927 Whal with #2 nib, an OMAS fine point, a Cartier fine point, an Aurora Optima Broad nib. You can feel the difference, with some even hear the difference. The ultimate test was an OMAS with a Medium 18kt nib. I consider this particular pen to be one of the smoothest I've ever seen. It is now smoother. As always approach nib smoothing with caution and a delicate touch.

Esterbrook Gold Nibs
      1/8/2001:  Will Thorpe
I have never seen a Gold Renew Point (screw in) nib but I believe Paul Hoban in his book "The Fountain Pens of Esterbrook" mentions them. I also believe the 8000 series was a palladium alloy (I have no idea what palladium is). I have had a couple of 8000 series nibs and they were nice and shiney like chrome! I have one Esterbrook renew point that has an opening in the section that covers the base of the nib. This opening appears to be factory made and the base of the nib is gold. The nib that sticks out of the screw in base is steel. My guess is that it was gold plated and has worn off. The other option is that it was a gold nib plated with something (palladium?) and that has also worn off. Could this opening have been there to show that it was a gold nib? Esterbrook did make gold plated nibs for dip pens. Esterbrook also adapted some of its steel dip pen nibs into renew points and may have done the same with some gold plated nibs. I have a renew point marked Esterbrook 2312 ITALIC, the only one I've ever seen. Just some thoughts and credit given to Paul Hoban and his book.

RE Esterbrook gold-plated nibs
      1/8/2001:  Mike
I am primarily an Esterbook collector, and have only heard of these gold-plated nibs. Esterbrook is a fascinating company! I would like to know more about these nibs too. Were they specially made, i.e. commemorative, limited edition, etc?

Schmidt refill
      1/8/2001:  Sean Steeds
I would like a ball point pen refill for a "Hanae Mori " Pen. The type is as follows; SCHMIDT rolling silver 669 Grossraum made in Germany Metallspitze F Either fine or medium will do. Anyone got any ideas where I might get one in UK, Netherlands, Belgium or Germany please. I've tried the internet pen sites

Esterbrook gold-plated nibs
      1/8/2001:  Joe Lischka
About 20 years ago, I bought a bookstore's remaining stock of Esterbrook Renew points. Four of these were Esterbrook gold-plated No. 8440 superfine nibs made in the U.S.A. I've looked in a number of Esterbrook references and have never seen a gold-plated Renew point mentioned nor the 8440. Are there any Esterbrook experts here who know when these were made and how common they are?

      1/8/2001:  Bud Fitz
Where can I find a LARGE rocker blotter, and a source of appropriate blotter paper?

Parker T-1's
      1/8/2001:  Dean Tweeddale
You can easily find Parker T-1's at most any pen show. At the Columbus Show for example I saw 10-12 of them. One dealer had 6 or 7 from good condition to perfect and the prices varied based on the condition. This would be a great reason to attend one of the shows, especially one of the larger ones. Dean

Parker T-1
      1/8/2001:  James Goodwin
Parker T-1's are tough to find. You have to keep on looking on EBAY for one to turn up. Avg price of ballpoint T-1 is $400 and up. There is a rollerball model and it is tougher to find. Only 1 T-1 rollerball was ever sold on EBAY and I was able to buy it for $110 which is a steal of a deal. Good luck and happy hunting.

Father Terry??
      1/8/2001:  John

re: Recife Pens
      1/8/2001:  Waco Jphnny D
See my comments re. the Crystal at alt.collecting.pens-pencils. I have 3 Press Master-type Recifes. They're large, reliable, unspectacular, and overpriced. The 2 I didn't mention at a.c.p-p are the rubber-covered models which are very heavy (built on brass bases) and on which, although physically possible, posting the caps would be ludicrous in terms of balance.

Parker T-1 Pen
      1/7/2001:  ron goelman
Can anyone tell me more about this interesting set? I have the FP and am looking for the Ball point. Where should I look and what should I pay for one in decent shape? I have had no luck on EBAY. Also, was there a rollerball available in the series? Thank you.

Dupont pens
      1/7/2001:  Richard Engel
I just finished reading Dean's summary of the voting results for the best pens of the year (Great idea Dean!). It seems that Dupont pens did not get many votes and I was curious why. I find these to be some of the best pens around, but they never seem to get much attention. Do people disagree with me? Of course, it didn't help that I never got around to voting myself.

shows and trading

i am desperate to find collectors of ball point pens to trade discussions, trade pens, and find out where locations are to display your pens--like in a show? anyone please le me know anything.

my book arrived!
      1/6/2001:  Craig Nelson
I won the Pen of the Year drawing sponsored by Dean Tweeddale, and so received Andreas Lambrou’s Fountain Pens: US + UK, from Sam at Pendemonium this afternoon. This book is so terrific I dropped everything and sat down and read it cover-to-cover. Any penlover who hasn’t seen this must get one ASAP - besides a great accounting of history, the gorgeous pictures make it the Playboy magazine of writing instruments -- you’ll drool till you drop. I couldn’t wait to recover from my holiday hangover and soar on another shopping spree after gandering the CP Pushkin, Waterman 402 Cable Twist, Parker Jack-Knife Sterling, T-1 Titanium, and Sheaffer PFM 3 Snorkel. Hubba Hubba ... Now, back to making some money to support my cravenous addiction . . . Thanks so much Sam + Dean!

superglue
      1/5/2001:  Ron
I have to agree with Richard's views on using supeglue for feeds. Superglue, when exposed to moisture WILL break down and let go. I have found that even high humidity can eventually cause the glue to let go. A few years ago I looked into using "Black Max" - a super glue for rubber - to repair a feed. The local vendor let me look at the published data on the glue, along with the Hazmat data. The way that you remove super glue from eyes, fingers, any place where you DON'T want it, is to immerse it or flood it with water. I decided against using it since a feed is always wet with a water based material. It's bound to let go, unless you never intend to use the pen! You also have to be careful in selecting an epoxy cement - some are better in wet applications than others. (check the package and instructions) I would try plastic welder epoxy (water resistant, reasonably fast set), a two ton epoxy, or my favorite, J. B. Weld. The latter takes quite a while to set, but will hold forever, under all kinds of environments. A THIN application is all that is needed -one assumes that the surfaces should mesh, since they were once one piece! All that you need is enough glue to fill the small gap.

Hot Dog! Superglue War!!
      1/5/2001:  Will Thorpe
Actually for the most part I've had pretty good luck with superglue, better luck on plastic than hard rubber. I've never done a feed with superglue but have done a few sectons. I've used different brands and some seem to work better than others even though I've been told all superglue is the same stuff! Obviously all plastics aren't the same and the same can be said for rubber. So experiment. I have a dental pick that I honed down to a fine blade ad it will clean anything out of ink channels. In fact I've even re-grooved some threads with it. The only broken section I've "glued" back together was rubber and I used two part gold bond weld epoxy. I drilled a very small hole into each broken end, and I mean small. I then cut a straight pin for a plug to give the two pieces an internal brace. The epoxy squeezed out all over the feed when I pressed them together. Eventually, after drying, it took several hours to cut/sand away the excess and clean out the channels but it is definitely "glued" together.

Esterbrook, and inks
      1/5/2001:  Bob
Glad to see so many posters with a good word about the vintage Esterbrooks. I think they have high utility/cost and elegance/cost ratios. As for inks, I also like Private Reserve Copper Burst. Have tried Herbin's Olive Green, it has particulate matter in it, clogs. Might be pigment. I mixed Sheaffer Black and Waterman Green (bad smell in the latter, but nice), and got a combination that wrote noticeably smoother than either alone.

Stylophiles
      1/5/2001:  Dean Tweeddale

We have also archived the Oct 2000 issue for your continued viewing. We will also be working to archive the past issues in the comming months. Hope you enjoy, Dean

I would like to have my husband's Parker fountain pen repaired, but the only site I can find is in the UK and does not accept pens from other countries. Does anyone have an address in the US for Parker pen repairs? Thanks.

Repairing an Aurora 88
      1/5/2001:  Deak Nabers
The plastic cap one turns to load ink has become disattached from my large Aurora 88. It seems as though it might be easily repaired, but I can't figure out how to do it. Do any of you know how I might reattach it to the pen without sending the pen off to a repair shop?

Superglue or no supergule, that is the question
      1/5/2001:  Stephen Lam
I suggested using superglue with hard rubber and plastic based on the many (and I mean many) repairs I have done. If anybody has experience indicating that is not a good choice. That is fine. I have no problem with that. There is no need to reply to this post.

Re : gluing broken feed : Stephen Lam
      1/5/2001:  Richard
At the risk of starting a war here :-) I recommend strongly against superglue. First, it's very "wet" and will find its way into cracks and crevices--meaning that if it comes close to feed channels it can and will migrate into them. Second, and perhaps more troublesome, is the fact that superglues are members of a family called cyanoacrylate adhesives. They set up not by drying in the normal sense but rather by means of a chemical reaction when they are exposed to the water vapor in the air. Once set, they are strongly hygroscopic; they absorb water. And, absorbing water, they gradually come unstuck. Ink, being largely water, is an ideal solvent; I've had superglues come apart after only a few weeks of exposure.

Re : gluing broken feed
      1/4/2001:  Stephen Lam
If you can find a replacement, do so. If not, use superglue for both plastic and hard rubber feeds. Apply sparingly. The good thing about superglue is that it does not clog your ink channel.

Pens and Pencils
      1/4/2001:  Penny
My grandfather has left me his collection of pens and pencils. It it an extensive collection ranging from 13 very old fountain pens; a Sheaffer Pen & Pencil set in a case; and 76 very old ink pens. One is in the shape of a cigar and another has a carved naked lady in fluid. There are also 22 ink pens with the same advertising. The pencil collection includes 22 pencils in various shapes and forms (beer bottle, liquor bottle, baseball bat, bowling pin, milk jug, and bullets). Two of the pencils have a knife on the opposite end. Another pencil is a 4 1/2" rifle with the pencil in the barrel and a sharpener in the stock end. There is also a variety of 81 pencils plus two boxed sets of colored pencils. One set features Felix the Cat and has 8 School Crayons and the other is a set of 6 Sunset colored pencils. Does anyone have any information as to where and how I could sell these and what the values may be? Please contact Penny at Xenos7@aol.com

Re: glue for broken nib feed?
      1/4/2001:  Richard
I've used five-minute epoxy with good success. The process requires extreme care to avoid getting the glue into the feed channels; I apply the epoxy with a toothpick, leaving a clear area around the channels. Example: I recently repaired a Sheaffer Touchdown whose owner had snapped the comb feed in half right where it enters the section. (Don't ask!) Here's the process for that pen: Drive the feed out of the section, and make sure the parts fit properly - check the alignment of the curved extension channel. Apply a u-shaped "bed" of epoxy sparingly, surrounding the "hole" through which the curved extension passes, making sure not to get epoxy into, or right next to, the "hole." Assemble the parts by positioning them in a V relative to each other with the feed-channel edge together, then "unfold" the V, pushing the parts together into a straight alignment and squeezing any excess epoxy out toward the exposed surface of the feed, not toward the surface that mates with the nib. Hold the assembly IN YOUR FINGERS for the five minutes that the epoxy takes to set.

glue for broken nib feed?
      1/3/2001:  einv
Is there any special glue that you would recommend to piece together broken feeds? the two pieces mesh pretty well without any bits missing. what i am afraid of is having excess glue ruin the feed channels... any suggestions?

Addendum to WTB

No personalized engraving, please.

WTB: Early Sheaffer Balance
      1/3/2001:  Richard
I'm in search of a chimera. I want a near-mint Lifetime Senior Balance (approx. 5-3/8" capped), not an oversize monster, good clear Marine Green color with little or no perceptible discoloration, with a short humped roundball clip (made 1933-'34), smooth medium nib, no brassing (or as close as possible short of replating). My intent here is to replace the Marine Green Balance in my collection (http://www.virtualcrate.com/pens/images/bal_03.jpg) with a better one of the same vintage and color. If you have such a pen for sale, please offer your best price in your first email (to avoid scaring me off).

      1/3/2001:  Leigh Swain
Just received Nathan Tardif's latest creation, a Flighter with a smooth Triumph med stub nib. It's fabulous--the design is amazing, the nib shaped and stainless body complement each other wonderfully. Workmanship is Mr. Tardif's usual highest standards and great service to boot. Please seriously consider this pen.

Sheaffer Snorkel
      1/3/2001:  Bill Marciniak
Hi, Could use your help. I have a Sheaffer Snorkel fountain pen that needs repair. Looking for a reputable repair facility. A phone number would be appreciated. Thanks, Bill Marciniak mmarciniak@ainop.com

Yard-O-Led
      1/3/2001:  Steve
Vicki, I use the Med. nib which is pretty wide, but I prefer it. If you write very small, the EF might be OK. You could order a ctalog from Filofax USA (parent company) and that will surely wet your appetite. I purchased mine from Fountain Pen Hospital.Good luck.

Sheaffer PFM
      1/3/2001:  Kasia
Hello, I am looking for a vintage Sheaffer PFM (models IV or V) in an excelent or near mint condition. The pen should have an F or M nib. Please, contact me with if you have such an item for sale. Best regards, Kasia Leijten.

Congrats Craig!
      1/2/2001:  Sam - Pendemonium
Inky Greetings!

Wanted to thank everyone for participating in the Pen of the Year postings, throughly enjoyed reading everyone's picks and will look forward to reading Dean's analysis of the votes in an upcoming issue of Stylophiles. Congratulations to Craig, random winner of the book, Fountain Pens US & UK by Andy Lambrou. We'll be getting this great book out to Craig shortly.

Peace, Good Health and Prosperity to each of you in the New Year. Hope to see many of you at the Philadelphia Pen Show this weekend.

Good Collecting! Sam

Pens of the Year Results
      1/2/2001:  Dean Tweeddale
With the Penlovers “Pen(s) of the Year” voting done I took to task the counting process. Somehow next year I will make this easier at least for me to count. We had over 70 individuals voting in the five categories: Best vintage pen, New pen under $100, New pen over $100 not an LE, New pen Limited Edition, and Worst pen.

I am going to give the quick results here to save time and space, but will try to give a more in depth evaluation possibly in the January Issue of Stylophiles that will be up soon. Holidays slowed us a little bit but it should be ready in a few days. You’ll see an announcement here on the bulletin board.

Vintage Category:
The Parker 51 won this category hands down, receiving half of all the votes placed in this category.
Runner up was the Parker Vintage Parker Duofolds (combining all the vintage Duofold votes)

New Pen Under $100:
Winner is the Namiki Vanishing Point capturing a little over a fourth of the votes in the category.
Runner up is the Waterman Phileas just five votes behind.

New Pen Over $100 not a Limited Edition:
First place goes to the new Sheaffer Intrigue this was a surprise to me as this pen is just over $100. But maybe that’s a message to manufactures, to make us decent affordable pens.
Runner up is a tie between the Modern Parker Duofolds and Stipula’s Saturno.

New Limited Edition:
Lots of different votes here but the winner by a slight margin was the Aurora Mare.
Runner up was again a tie with the Omas T2 and the Waterman Serenite.

Worst Pen:
Lots of pens named here, Krones, Lepine Cybergraph, Wearever Skylines, but the pen most mentioned as the worst was the Modern Montblanc’s especially the 144 series.

Now for the question of who is the lucky person that won the drawing of the book, "Fountain Pens US and UK" by Andreas Lambrou, donated by Sam of Pendemonium. First while the drums are rolling I'd like to thank Sam for donating this book and all of you fellow pen lovers that participated in the Penlovers Pen(s) of the Year. It was lots of fun and we'll do it again this year as well as some other things we have planned. Now the name please…… and the winner is….. Craig Nelson.

Thanks again to all those who submitted their pen of the year. Dean Tweeddale

Steve : Yard-O-Led
      1/2/2001:  Vicki
Thanks, Steve, for that info. That's exactly what I wanted to know. What size nib do you use? and do you think EF would be as smooth? I think, now, perhaps I will consider the Viceroy (not the Grand) because I don't want "a real big pen." These pens are so beautiful; I was taken with the picture in the latest PenWorld of TWO of them! Thanks, Steve.

Yard-O-Led
      1/2/2001:  Steve
Vicki, I own the Viceroy "Grand" Barley, and would recommend the "Barley" beacause of the fingerprinting problems with the smooth or lined versions. It is a fabulous fountain pen, and I consider it my everyday pen. I prefer to write w/o the cap posted because it is a REAL BIG pen. The nib was buttery smooth right out of the box, no skipping either. I also own a Regent Pencil and Vieroy Roller. The roller feels really small after using the "Grand". Highly recommend the YOL product.

Counting Votes
      1/1/2001:  Dean
Just to let everyone know...
I am in the midst of counting all the votes for Pen(s) of the Year and will post the results soon. The drawing for the book will be done tomorrow. Happy New Year!! Dean

Recife Crystal II and Levenger Seas
      1/1/2001:  Gerald
I am looking to purchase a Levenger Seas translucent fountain pen or a Recife Crystal II fountain pen. Would be with a fine nib. Could I get some advice on either of these pens. I am looking to purchase a demonstrator style fountain pen to my collection, so any other comments on demonstrators would be appreciated. Gerald

Ink of the Year

Waterman Havana Brown -- it never dries out, always writes and looks great. Second favorite: Waterman Black.
