| Sheaffer building | |

| polishing compound | |
| 2/28/2001: Randy | |
| I have consistently used automotive rubbing compound and polishing compound to polish my pen barrels. I always hand buff using soft damp cotton cloth. I would also be very careful about dremel tools as at higher RPM, you can do alot of damage quickly. If you are going to use a tool like this take some junkers and practice first. | |

| Will you help save a Sheaffer landmark? | |
| 2/27/2001: Sam Fiorella | |
| Fellow Pen Collectors: Rumors have abundantly been flowing around Fort Madison for the past couple of weeks that the oldest Sheaffer owned building on Ave. H may fall to the wrecking ball. The brick building has been shrouded beneath a steel wrap for over a decade and has not been used for other than storage in 20 years. It sits on Sheaffer property just west of the main plant. This is the building where many of the first Sheaffer pens were manufactured in 1914. When I came back from the LA Pen SHow late last week, much to my surprise, the steel wrap had been removed and the original building with its later facade is now in plain view surrounded by orange construction fencing, or perhaps better described - orange destruction fencing. I would like to think that there might be at least a glimmer of hope that the company might reconsider its position and proceed very slowly to determine if, indeed, the original 1914 (actually, even earlier) building is still there. If there, in view of the very dominate position Sheaffer held in the 20's and 30's this building is a very important structure indeed. What better place to house a collection of Sheaffer writing instruments and memorabilia. The City of Fort Madison just approved a bond for $70,000 (the cost of demolition?????) to Bic to assist them with consolidating the main Sheaffer facilities to two floors from the current three floors with the ultimate goal of keeping the plant open and Sheaffer jobs in Fort Madison. The fact that the City of Fort Madison is providing Bic (which I suspect has far more money than this small town!) with this financing could provide some leverage in donating the Sheaffer building. To Bic it would mean writing off a decaying old building, but to Fort Madison and pen collectors worldwide it would mean preserving an important part of history. I know each of you are busy and probably spread about as thin as I am right now!!!! An immediate email, and/or FAX on your letterhead to Sheaffer could make a difference and perhaps save a bit of pen collecting history. Contact info is below. I would suggest an immediate email to each. Robert Kuskowski, Operations Mgr., Ft. Madison Jack Teague Linda Blakesley, Adm. asst. Cheryl duBois Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to provide in this matter. Please
pass the word to your fellow pen collectors and urge them to contact Sheaffer! |

| buffing compound | |
| 2/27/2001: Ron | |
| In reply to Bruce's question - I have used a buffing compound designed for plastic for several years. It's has a fast cutting action, but is extremely fine, so that you get a wonderful shine to whatever you are polishing. Even though the compound is a light blue, I have found that it does NOT change the color of the pen that you are polishing. It is made by Divine Brothers Company, Utica NY 13503. One stick lasts a LONG time! Simicrome works well, but this takes things a little farther. | |

| Pen Parts for Sale/Trade | |
| 2/27/2001: Mason | |
| Hello, all! I haven't been here in well over two years, and it's good to see many familiar names. My, but the place has changed! It is also fun to see that there is still the occasional controversy that riffles the calm surface. It seems there are many strong personalities in this hobby and in my humble opinion the infrequent tempests only adds to the interest! The reason I am posting is that I spent a lot of time two to three years ago refurbishing pens and find that I no longer have the time or the inclination to do so. I have a lot of parts, tools and doodads out in the garage that are basically just in the way. I don't want to just toss this stuff out, so I thought I'd see if anyone is interested in it. I won't post a complete list here (in fact, I haven't typed one out yet), but I have, among other things, a tool for removing parker vacumatic fillers, a small ultrasonic cleaner, and a ton of pen bodies, caps, blind caps, and miscellaneous parts. Most of this stuff is Sheaffer, there are a few Parker Vac barrels, etc. Lot of vac-fill rods, end nuts, stiff washers etc. Miscellanous small tools for working on pens. If you're interested, drop me an email. | |

I tried Staples web site, but they could not provide me with any information. Can any one give me a lead on where I might purchase more of these pens, either on-line or in a traditional store? Thank you.

| Journals for Ron | |

| Pendemonium is a source of fountain pen friendly journals, notepads, writing paper, ink, etc. You need something for writing and Sam will probably have it. I bought notepads and a journal at the LA show and recommend the Pendemonium selection.Ron might want to clean his pens of the gook which coated papers and newspapers leave behind.I would also recommend reading Da Book and Franks advice on paper and pen cleaning. | |

| Chicago Pen Show Jam Session | |
| 2/25/2001: Len Provisor | |
| Not an official activity of the show, but several pen folk with Blues, Folk and Jazz in their blood will be bringing their guitars, harmonica and other talents to participate in a yet-to-be announced location where we can get down and dirty. Co-conspirator is guitar-dolcimer strummer and silken voice Sandina. We'll see if the hotel can allow something-somewhere, be sure to bring your fountain pen union card. I visited Sandina at her latest gig at a local coffeehouse Sat eve., and brought pens, just in case. We never met, but soon as I walked in she spotted the tell-tale pen clips in my pocket...she soon crooned out her newest ballad Ink & Pen. The crowd went wild, pen collectors appeared from nowhere, shouting their bids scrambling like a Chicago Pen Show feeding frenzy, State Police and National Guard were called, I slipped to the back and hid with my decaf and pile of inkblotters. Sandi is a Joan Baez, Buffy St. Marie and squint-a-bit Janis Joplin growed up. So plan on the big Chicago Show, this really may be the Daddy of 'em all. Bring bail money. | |

| Latest Vintage Pen Catalogue Repro Available! | |
| 2/25/2001: Jon Rosenbaum | |
| We have just introduced a new reproduction catalogue for you Sheaffer lovers! This is the 1937 catalogue, published in August of that year. The catalogue includes the first year "Crest" models, the Balance line, including the illusive Roseglow. Desk sets, pencils, pen and pencil sets, etc. are shown. The catalogue consists of 25 pages, seven in full color plus a reproduction in color of the original cover. As is our practice, this catalogue is comb bound on heavy coated paper for ease of use and durability. The price is $20 plus $2.00 shipping. However, if you order a copy of this and our 1941 Sheaffer catalogue (regularly $35 plus $2.00 shipping) together, we will provide both for just $50 and $3.50 priority mail. Due to reproduction and binding costs, we havn't been able to discount our catalogues in the past, but we felt it was time to stimulate interest in the Sheaffer brand. For a written discription of all catalogues currently available, go to http:members.aol.com/jonr529/catdscrp.jpg By the way, this new Sheaffer 1937 catalogue was a hit at the LA Pen Show. Thanks for your support. Jon R | |

| Atlanta Pen Show | |
| 2/24/2001: Sam - Pendemonium | |
| Hope to see many of you at the ATLANTA PEN SHOW on March 3-4! I know it's hard to pick and choose among the many pen shows these days, but don't rule some of these smaller shows off your list. Lots of active collectors in the Atlanta area and I'm always surprised at the pens and pen stuff that can turn up here. In fact as I think back, some of my favorite things in my collection came from Atlanta; a Watermans' autograph book, got a great Parker 22 red mottled in the auction one year and while it might not excite some of you - I love an original Carters Inx wood box that had been turned into a tool chest! It goes without saying that the folks in the Southeast Pen Collectors Club are the greatest and have that southern hospitality down to a science! Frank and I will have 3 tables full of pens, inks and other surprises for both days of the Atlanta Show. Hope you'll stop by, test out over 70 different inks, browse thru the books, scribble with some pens. If you have any special requests, drop us an email NLT Wed, we're heading for Atlanta on Thursday. Atlanta Pen Show, Holiday Inn Select - Dunwoody. Show info available from Gerald Zwiren - penchaser@aol.com See ya'll in Atlanta! Sam |

| .... And the Duofold Lives On! | |
| 2/23/2001: Andreas Lambrou | |
| Parker Duofold Celebration Weekend! The Parker Duofold series is, in my opinion, the most important and celebrated tradition in the history of the fountain pen and its industry. The Duofold was manufactured in many countries around the world, but in particular in America and later on in England. The Big Red of the 1920s is part of almost every serious fountain pen collection. And the CP5 Duofold of 1999, probably the last of this great line, has been heralded by Parker and many pen lovers as one of the best Duofolds ever made. It is the first time that the Duofold Centennial has been fully covered in sterling silver. The two forms offered, 'CP5 Vintage' and 'CP5 Modern' are adorned with exquisite guilloche engravings -- and the pen point is still offered in 14 different grades. Our Celebration offer this weekend is built round the CP5 Duofold for pen lovers who wish to acquire these exclusive pens for every day use and prefer to invest just in the pens themselves rather than the additional elaborate hand produced packaging and literature. And the pens still carry the Parker warranty and after sales service as well as the Classic Pens guarantee. We have taken the liberty of putting together a very attractive package for you to consider. The total cost is $950 delivered in the USA. The package is in four parts, you select your item from each part and like a menu, you have a choice in each of these parts. Furthermore, the cost of $950 can be divided into two easier payments of $475 each. We will deliver the goods to you once your first payment has been received and charge you for the second payment, 30 days thereafter. So enjoy selecting your items from the lists below. | Re: antique nibs - M. | |
| 2/23/2001: Richard | |
| How you clean them depends on what kind of ink they were used with. If it was ordinary fountain-pen ink, you can try undiluted Formula 409 to loosen up the crud, followed by a water flush and then a bath in Lift Off 3 to really get the ink off. (I've found that Lift Off 3 doesn't get a foothold on seriously dried crud as well as 409 does.) If it was India (draftsman's) ink, Ko-I-Noor makes a pen soak that works, and you can also try undiluted household ammonia. | |

| Wahl Desk Set | |
| 2/23/2001: Martyn | |
| I came across a Walh Eversharp single pen desk set at a country general store a couple of days ago. It's a lever fill and the sac is still intact. The pen is a mauve-ish marble with a black section and blind cap (the typical long tappered variety on desk sets). The holder matches. The nib is 14k. There is a slight gap between the section and the barrel (possibly due to a sac replacement?). Otherwise, the pen and stand are in good contition (no scratches, etc). I've no idea on the age, but it's obviously vintage. Asking price is $65.00 Canadian Funds. Is this something worth snapping up? What are these desk sets worth? How rare or collectable are they? Thanks in advance. Martyn | |

| Parker Refills, etc. | |
| 2/22/2001: Dean Tweeddale | |
| Speaking of Parker rollerball refills, Ive made a find that I like. While shopping at the local Rite Aid drug store yesterday I explored the office supplies to see what the rest of the world writes with. I picked up a Pilot G2 gel ink roller ball for $1.99, Ive heard about these and felt the need to try one. Must say for a rollerball they are very nice, laying down a silky smooth line. The cat loves the new plastic pen toy as I took out the cartridge and put it in a Pelikan rollerball. Also found a new Parker rollerball cartridge that uses the gel ink technology, this is a genuine Parker refill and again is much better than the traditional rollerball refill. Again it writes smooth as silk with no skipping and as I read the product information is fade resistant, water resistant, and archival safe because it is acid free. Now if someone could please make a capless version that is the same size (length and diameter) as the standard Parker ballpoint refill in fine, medium, broad, extra broad, stub, and italic (the last two might be pushing it a little) I would convert any ballpoint that I have. | Research Triangle Pen Club (NC) - This Sunday at 3 - New location | |
| 2/22/2001: Ross | |
| We're getting our just desserts, for a chance. Well, all they offer at Francesca's, where we'll be meeting, are desserts. And coffee. Meeting time is 3:00 this Sunday. Bring pens with flex or nibs other than fine/medium so that we can compare characteristics. I'll have paper, ink, and the usual repair kit. Francesca's is located on 9th Street in Durham, very close to the Regulator (half block South) where we used to meet (before they changed the seating arrangements). Any questions? E-mail. C'y'all there- | |

| Agree wholeheartedly with Len Provisor's nice description of the LA penshow. What i want to know, though, is what sort of pen collector would be simply stupid enough to misplace couple boxes of irreplaceable weird vacs. Oy. | |

| More on LA Pen Show | |
| 2/22/2001: Len Provisor | |
| Lately it takes me a few more days to recover from a pen show, not because I'm getting older, I'm just playing harder. LA show was intense, non-stop action and I was trying to go in several directions at one time. I sat with Andy Lambrou and Paul Rossi as we reviewed a series of stunning sterling overlays created by Paul, which incorporate more techniques of workmanship than ever seen on a single pen. Watch for this soon on Stylophiles. Sterling has always been a favorite with me, and Bill Weakley ("the guy in the Tux with the long grey hair") also has an LE that Paul is working on for him. He's calling it "Dozen Roses", his exclusive distribution, made by Bexley in pink 18K over a Mandarin Duofold/M600-size button filler. Bill's often quoted motto is "A pen is nothing more than a controlled leak." I bought a Bexley "51" barrel and section, in a delicious burgundy marbled material, I'm such a pushover for "51"s, especially Howard Levy's creations. Mauricio from Argentina and Ariel from Brazil brought some sterling engraved "51" caps, a few of Mauricio's with a brilliant cold enamel overlay featuring a micro-hand painted scenery with gardens and nudes. Rates a double "Wow" in my book. Mauricio is an antique dealer with a great talent, ask for him at most larger pen shows. Word is that the Michigan Pen Show is going to be sponsored by the local Montblanc Boutique, where Sean has contacts. About time MB drops some profits to support a pen show, this would be a first, and don't forget that Detroit is really Conklin country. (Can't wait to see what Rob "the guy in the suit behind the table" Rosenberg of the new Conklin Pen Co. will bring to cross swords with MB). I can't get over the beautiful mile-wide smiles from the PenFairy Maryann Zucker, such is the warm feeling when everyone says "you're crazy, it can't be done in NY", her NYC Show is going to be the event of the year. Finally, guess what? I can't believe I'm up to almost 70 of my 1946 Parker "51" Beechcraft airplane models already sold after the first 3 days. First 100 only will be numbered, all will be signed by Geoffrey Parker. if you want a #'d model...hurry. Visit inkblotters.com to see this model. Big thanks to Boris Rice, Chris Odgers and Stan Pfeiffer for an outstanding LA Pen Show. | |
| Parker Refills | |
| 2/21/2001: Barry Manovich | |
| Lately I have been having difficulty with the parker roller ball 0.5 (fine) refill in black, they seem to vary in performance from one to the other. Does anyone know if Parker is in the process of upgrading just as they have for the 0.7? Does any one know where I can get a 2001 catalogue for Parker pens? Thanks for your assistance. | |
| GREAT NEW PENS/GREAT LOW PRICES | |
| 2/21/2001: bruce g | |
| PARKER DUOFOLD: Centennial, gray, fine (f) & medium (m), $254; International, black, f&m, jade m., gray f&m, $214. WATERMAN: Carene Deluxe, blue f&m, $139. Rhapsody SETS (fountain & ball), blue, green (my favorite, but green's always my favorite), red, $269/set. L'etalon, black f&m, $205. AURORA: Talentum black-and-gold, f&m, $169 (cartridges/converter-the gold-nib Aurora that travels!); Mare, m., $329; Primavera, italic nib, $279. SHEAFFER Balance II, amber f., blue m., red f&m, $119. CROSS Pinnacle, burgundy, m., 18K-nib; magnificent lacquer, $175. VISCONTI, Kaleido, all colors but green, f&m, these are extremely impressive for fans of large pens, much more so than any photos I've seen, $229. (Photo comment probably true for most pens!). Ask about anything else you're looking for, incl. WATERMAN Phileas, Preface, Liaison, Deluxe, Initial; AURORA Ipsilon, Idea; SHEAFFER Prelude; NAMIKI Ecrino; CROSS Classic (Ebony, Forest), Twin Sterling Silver, Gold. Ballpoints & Rollerballs may be available, e.g., AURORA green-marble Optima BP, $115; Primavera BP, $120; these pens also look immensely better than their photos. Add $5 s&h/order. Pa. residents add 6% tax. | |
| sheaffer/eversharp | |
| 2/21/2001: Don S. Leigh | |
| I have a very old deskset, fountain pen w/quartz(?)base & quartz paper clip w/metal elephant, that i would like to find info on. On the nib is: Sheaffer Lifetime - made in usa - pat pend - 5808529. On the barrel: made in usa by makers of eversharp pat. 1.596.811. it is black with (it looks like) gold and/or silver or mother of pearl lines. To fill it has a small knob inside that says 'to fill 5 turns'. Quartz base is bone color with streaks of dark orange and off-white. The elephant is cast metal, black with 2 long screw-posts attached to 2 legs entendin through base. Does this sound remotely familiar to anyone? Thanks | |

| LA Pen Show | |
| 2/21/2001: Len Provisor | |
| First LA show for me, it was far better than I imagined. The people, the atmosphere, the weather. Trading room was huge, wide aisles and great lighting, and coffee right outside the door. Actually slept with my room windows wide open. From Thurs. pm on it was busy with dealers and collectors arriving, quickly dropping their bags and plunging right into it. By Friday it was close to 100 dealers, a good crowd so early, and by Saturday it was almost shoulder-to-shoulder. Chris Thompson's display of replica Duofold Seniors was a show stopper, even his home-made display cases were magnificent. The array of Duofolds were grabbed by the handful, by those lucky to get to him as he was unpacking....and yes, he did have the look of a deer caught in headlights. he was very pleased with the show. Bertram's Inkwell had one Conway Stewart Churchill in a new brilliant blue, and promises that shipments were coming soon. Delta was the sponsor, the Theme pen was the Alolphe Sax pen, so a pretty young girl was strolling the show aisles softly playing tunes on a saxaphone to remind everyone who the sponsor was. Clever. Delta showed a new "mini" pen, barely one-inch long, and actually functional. One collector was selling his "extras" of Waterman 58's, you would pale at the sight, seeing as many as 30 near-mint 58's at one time. At the auction a very rare Parker "51" with a 14K gold Heritage cap was sold for $3,500., possibly a new record for this pen. Other memorable sights was Alan Gross' display case brimming with Michel Perchins, Gary Lehrer's pens perfectly restored and all arranged in rows, as if they were still in Catholic school, Maryann and Steve Zucker's Penstop display is a virtual time-warp of beautiful pens, and they were glowing because the NYC Pen Show is already a whopping success with so many early bookings. Sam and Frank at Pendemonium had tons of ink to dip, books, stationery, and oodles of things you just gotta have, and her ink table tablecloth is now a work of art, called stained neo-Iowa impressionism, not to be confused with Susan Wirth's tablecloth, called neo-Milwaukee impressionism. Dean Tweeddale and Bill Reipl were busy like a pair of squirrels taking pictures, non-stop interviewing and writing more stories for Stylophiles Magazine. My replica Parker "51" Beechcraft airplane was a huge success, selling over 62 planes of the first 100 numbered in this issue. I was amazed. Perhaps it was the Benny Goodman Big Band music I had playing in the background to help set the mood. One collector, busy talking with a trader, misplaced two boxes of very rare and expensive Vacumatics, asking everyone to keep an eye out, as his knees were shaking. Next day a dealer found the two boxes on top of his own, right where he had placed them. He was very lucky. Sunday ended with 157 tables and almost 1,000 public visitors, the hum of the crowd is the best sound dealers like to hear on a Sunday. Not only busy, it was actually tough getting thru the aisles. Loved every minute, can hardly wait 'til next year. | |
| What type of pen is this? | |

| What type of pen is this? | |
| 2/20/2001: Debbie | |
| I purchase a Royal LD85 calculator from Walmart approx 03/01/01. There is a free executive pen as a bonus when you purchase this calculator. I have called Royal and Walmart several times. No one can tell me what the brand of the pen is or what black refill will fit it. The only thing engraved on the clip of the pen is Taiwan. I am running out of places to search and thought someone here could help me. | |

Also have some of the older colors including terracotta, Aspen, arctic blue, hard rubber brown/black swirl, etc. Hope to have jpeg available by tomorrow if you are interested. Price is $100 per set delivered within the US. These require full size aerometric 51 mechanism and cap. They make a stunning pen. Feel free to email me with jpeg requests. Thanks...Howard Levy

| I bought a Parker-Jotter and tried to use it and the cap just shot up in the air. Replaced it and it did it again about 6 wks later. The quality of the $5.00 Jotter is poor at the present time. I guess I should get the $15.00 one and see if it is of good quality. | |

| Corrected: Pen to Write on CDs | |
| 2/18/2001: Rod Ragner | |
| Woops!!! The Faber-Castell Permanent/Erasable pens are the "SMOOTH ANNOTATOR SET", not the "Document Pen." Sorry! They are $19.95 for a set of four (each a different color). | |
| Pen to Write on CDs | |
| 2/18/2001: Rod Ragner | |
| Kimberly, Levenger sells a the Faber-Castell "Document Pens" for $8.95 per pair - available in three colors. These, oddly, are "Permanent Markers" which can be erased (with the special supplied eraser). I find these particularly handy for writing on CD-RW media, especially if I erase the CD-RW and record something completely different on it. Otherwise, an inexpensive Sanford Sharpie (available at Staples and other office supply stores) work just fine, if you never make a mistake, your handwriting is always legible, and you only use CD-R (and never CD-RW) media. I hope that this answers your question... | |

| 2/18/2001: Ron Meloche | |
| I went to my first pen show on Saturday. Made the trip up to Manhattan Beach fron San Diego. To say I was overwhelmed and dizzy and drooling and envious are all an understatement. I dropped two pens off for repair with Father Terry Koch. bought a couple of Esterbrok pens and a couple of Esterbrook pencils 2 nibs some ink and a Parker 51. I had a great time I think I learned a few things and also bought a couple of books Frank Dubiel's repair book and a book about Esterbrook pens. All i can say is it next year yet I am ready for another show. Frank was the helpfull person who took the time to explain the diferences between the parker 51 and 21 plus the differences in each. I bought my 51 from him all the pens and pencils I bought yesterday seem to work fine. Thanks to all I talked to and did business with Ron | |

| Esterbrook Pen | |
| 2/15/2001: Ron Meloche | |
| I have a blue Esterbrook that fills by squeezing the filler sac between spring metal. I can not get the point out of it. So I soaked it in water several times for many hours. The nib would not screw out.The sac thus far did take in liquid. After that did not work I thought if I put it in pen cleaner from Dick Smith then that might free the point. After soaking the tip overnight not only does the nib still not come out but now the filler sac will not take in fluid. When squeezed it stays squeezed. What happened? Is there any way to fix the original problem of loosening the nib, and the caused problem of the sac not pulling in the ink by opening up. Thank you Ron | |

| Agatha Christie | |
| 2/14/2001: Dean | |
| MB did not make a Agatha Christie rollerball so I will assume that you are referring to the ballpoint. They range in price from $300 and up depending on condition, and if you have all the boxes and documentation. I have seen a factory sealed new mint one sell for $750 on auction. Dean | |
| Hemingway Ballpoint | |
| 2/14/2001: Dean | |
| Price range on the MB Hemingway ballpoint in new mint condition is between $350 and $450. Last year the market was flooded with these sending the price plummting down. I haven't seen any of them offered used so cannot attest to the price of a used one. I have one that is new mint in the upper third of that price range. Dean | |

| sheaffer desk set | |
| 2/13/2001: randy hartsell | |
| Hi, I recently purchased a sheaffer desk set at a estate sale. It has a green marble base, 5"x10", a small brass calendar on the left and 2 brass pin holders and fountain pins on the right. The pins and the base have a white dot on them. The pins have a blue "see thru" band about 1" from the nib.Would greatly appreciate info on date of manufacture and approximate value. Also any interest in purchasing this item. Thanks Randy | |

| Pen Study Group | |
| 2/12/2001: Scott Summerfield | |
| I think Lynn's idea is a great one...count me in. I'd love to learn more about the nuances of certain pen lines, such as Vacs, Wahl/Eversharp, Esterbrooks, etc. I'm on the West Coast, so time availability may be different than folks in other time zones, but this could be worked out. Read in this morning's USA Today (on the road again) about some new technologies that allow groups to easily work together on the net, so this could be an ideal application. Go for it Lynn! | |

| Multimedia Vintage Pen Study Group | |
| 2/12/2001: Lynn Brant | |
| Greetings all. What does multimedia vintage pen study group mean? I'm not exactly sure but am requesting some help in figuring it out. Here's the basics (picture this): about 20 people on a live conference call. There will be four of these calls, one a week for four weeks. Each call will have a theme and an expert guest. Ideas for themes revolve around aspects of vintage pens that are hard to learn from the books but very important. Things like what nuances within a line make certain pens, models, colors etc rare, and how to find and identify them. Things like which nibs and clips are correct on which pens, and how to spot good finds at shows or on ebay that others pass over. Picture the calls proceeding by referring to photos and diagrams that have been placed on a website for download. "Class handouts" are distributed this way before each session. Everyone is seeing the same thing at the same time, asking questions and engaging in discussion. There is much to be taught and learned in this way, I think. I'm looking for some more folks to help design this idea which I intend to host, and to participate in the beta run. If interested, email me. Oh, and happy valenpens day! | |

| 2/12/2001: tim | |
| I would like to purchase the Anniversary Cross Century ballpoint. It was out a few years back. I can't remember what year the anniversary was. The Century ballpoint was gold plated with a unique "ball" on the pocket clip. Please email if anyone has any information. timothyyoung@mindspring.com | |

| San Diego pen Collectors | |
| 2/12/2001: Ron Meloche | |
| I am new to pen collecting and thus far have 3Esterbrook J models, 2 vectors an old shaffer pen and pencil set, a watterman Harley Davidson a Montblanc, two cross pens. I am interested in finding out if there are any clubs or collecters in the greater San Diego area.I would appreciate any help. I intend on going to the pen show at the Mariot in Manhatten beach this coming weekend. As regards to the Montblonc it has always started writing late one or two characters after trying to start writing. No problems with any of my other pens along this line but then they do not have the advertising budget or Montblanc. Thanks Ron | |
| Need shirt pocket clip supplier | |
| 2/12/2001: Doug Hicks | |
| I am looking for a supplier of shirt pocket clips. These would slip onto my small round plastic product so the product could then be put into a shirt pocket and stay there. In the old days they were made of metal, had a round springy top and the shirt pocket clip extended downward. Although metal is preferable plastic would do. If you know of a supplier PLEASE put me in contact. You assistance will be deeply appreciated. Doug Hicks Cigarette Savers International, Inc. Largo, FL 727.586.6689 Doug@cigsnuffer.com | |

| The POWER of PenLovers.net advertising | |
| 2/10/2001: Len Provisor | |
| Dean put up a note on "What's New" for a free PenLovers.net ink blotter, linked to me and artist Pier Gustafson. I am "blown away" by the response. Over 125 since yesterday!! So to all you good penlovers sending your request, a little patience until I can mail 'em all. I do have a day job that keeps me busy, but I'll get them all out as soon as I can train my cat to lick envelopes. Thank you Dean, this proves that PenLovers.net advertising really pulls in the results. | |

| Briarwood Waterman LeMan BP | |
| 2/10/2001: Bradford Burling | |
| I am on the search for a Waterman LeMan Briarwood ball point pen. I received the fountain pen as a college graduation gift from my dad back in '94. As it turns out, The LeMan briarwood series has long since discontinued. Thus, I'm hoping that if I'm fortunate enough, there might be a penlover among you who owns this beauty among your collection and would be willing to part with it. It would be well cared for... Thanks for your time, folks. Brad | |

| Fountain Pen Hospital Hospital | |
| 2/9/2001: Hob | |
| I've always thought that you can't put a price on service, but the folks at the Fountainpen Hospital in New York apparently have. I bought a Mont Blanc limited edition last year and received very friendly service. A few months ago I bought a Sensa pen, and got handed-off to one of the new guys, who had little to say. Last week, I went in just to buy a copy of Pen World. I'm not sure, but I think the owner who waited on me grunted. | |
| Parker Pen Logo | |
| 2/9/2001: Bruce Pasarow | |
| Can anyone tell me when the Parker Pen Company first began using the arrow-in-the-oval logo for advertising and on their products. I belive it may have been in the late 1950's, but perhaps some of you know an exact date. An answer posted here on the bulletin board would be appreciated. I won't have access to my e-mail account today. | |

| 1946 Parker "51" Beechcraft Airplane | |
| 2/9/2001: Len Provisor | |
| Please pay a visit to my website WWW.INKBLOTTERS.COM (or click on my ad on the Home Page) for an outstanding treat!! See the airplane that inspired Kenneth Parker to produce the first "51" Flighter fountain pen. Dean Tweeddale, my magical WebMaster, has taken some incredible photos of the first prototype of this outstanding replica model. You will see actual vintage photos of the 1946 Beechcraft, just to prove that this airplane actually existed. This model is a limited production, by subscription only for the year 2001 only. This means I only make as many as ordered, no more. The first 100 only will be numbered, all the bases will be personally signed by Geoffrey S. Parker. This model is the ultimate DECO aircraft I have ever seen, with golden feather wings trailing off the nose and engine cowlings, golden Parker Arrows up the fuselage. This WILL become a very desireable and highly prized piece of Parker Pen Co. ephemera. I will display this model at the following pen shows: LA Chicago Washington, DC and Ohio. Free Beechcraft inkblotter and historical brochure when you visit the website. ....and please, I'd love to hear your comments on this model. Thank you. | |

| MB ballpoint refills | |
| 2/8/2001: Bob S. | |
| Bob Goodwillie asked about replacements for the MB ballpoint on 2/7. Eversharp (I don't know if this firm is a remnant of the Wahl-Eversharp company) makes an aftermarket cartridge that costs about $2.50, which is about half what MB cartridges go for. It's a dead ringer for the MB, and writes just as well. The Pilot Dr. Grip cartridge, 50 cents each, while much slimmer than the MB cartridge, writes more smoothly and fits in the MB. There might be others, I have experimented with almost everything to see if I could find a replacement for the disappointing Mont Blanc cartridge. The trick is finding a cartridge whose tip will not jam in the suddenly narrowing end of the MB ballpoint. | |

| Platinum Ltd. Edition | |
| 2/7/2001: Doctor Nib | |
| I'm looking for info on a limited edition by Platinum Pen Co. It is their 70th anniversary Arabesque pattern filigree fountain pen. They made it in both Sterling Silver and 18kt Gold, but here's the kicker, this one is made out of solid platinum (marked PT950). The pen is numbered as #60 and I'm guessing that they made 70 pieces since it was their 70th anniversary. I'm trying to find how many were actually made out of solid platinum and what the current value might be. I've tried Scott at the Platinum web-site and checked out other resources, but have come up empty for any reference or info. If there are any Platinum Pen Fanatics out there that can help me, then please e-mail me or post info on the Bulletin Board. Many Thanks!!! DOCTOR NIB | |

| Modern Pen Recommendations? ($200-$300) | |
| 2/6/2001: Jim Mamoulides | |
| For that kind of money, the Pelikan 800 is a really good choice, if you like a large pen. You could also take a completely different turn and pick up two pens, such as the Sheaffer Intrigue and a restored Parker 51 (wetinc.com has lots of them) or a Waterman Carene and a Parker Vacumatic. Then you'd wind up with two interesting pens for the same money! Cheers, Jim Mamoulides | |

| New Parker Duofold | |
| 2/6/2001: Raymond Wong | |
| RICK: I love the new Parker Duofolds. I just bought a Centennial and I may buy another one later. It is nice and well made. Like you, I have used many Parkers, 21, 45, 51, 75, 61, Premier, Vacumatics, VP etc. And I love the Duofold best. I think a modern Duofold can probably last forever, considering there is nothing that can go wrong with it. The only moving part is the converter which costs $5.50 each. The nib is very smooth too. | |
| Hey, Bernie... | |
| 2/6/2001: Len Provisor | |
| ...I USED to have close to 1,000 fountain pens also, then I woke up one day, went to the next few pen shows and sold most of them, finally settling for about 150 of the finest examples of each species that I could afford. I write with almost every one, but my everyday users thrown about my office are Sheaffer NoNonsense with David Mason-ized italics ground to stubs, a Rotring Core and some humble 51's. | |

(the 'new' ones have two ring bands). i love them both! the centennial especially balances beautifully. the international is easy to write fast with. a fine duofold will write like a medium so beware! a broad nib is not very broad and must be considered if you use cotton paper a lot. on it, you get plenty of line width variation using the B-nib. they are both convertor filled, so you might miss the older more capacious pens of parker. they come with nib exchange, and a lot of other benefits. it is possible to find them new under 200, often for as little as 150. so do not pay full dealer price, but take the time to shop around, esp in ebay or on the specials page in many online shops.
| #7 Feathertouch nib | |

| #5 Feathertouch nibs are common; #7 are quite another matter. Most oversize Balance pens were Lifetimes, and carried the relatively common large Lifetime nib. | |

| Hi. I need some help from you Sheaffer collectors. I have an oversize red vein gray Balance that needs a replacement #7 feathertouch nib. I've been told that this is not an uncommon nib but I have had no luck in finding one. I bought a 7-30 thinking that it would be an acceptable replacement but this looks like a huge #8 and I doubt it's going to fit. So, anyone want to trade a spare #7 feathertouch in excellent conditon for an excellent 7-30? Thanks. | |

| New Parker Duofold | |
| 2/5/2001: Rick | |
| I visited this site a few weeks ago and received some kind comments and respect the experience of people who commonly visit. So I have another question. What is your opinion of the new Parker Duofold pen, Centennial size? I have always uses Parker pens, 75 fountain pen, 51 fountain pen and T-ball Jotter. So I am basically well-disposed to the name. Thoughts? | |
| PENS that write well! | |
| 2/5/2001: Bernie | |
| I am always amazed as to how different person like different PENS. For all it's worth, I can tell you what I like. I have well over 1000 FOUNTAIN PENS and I write with a Hero which I paid 50 cents new. Writes as well as any. May not FLASH or look as good, but it writes nice enough for me. I even have a solid 14K PENS, barrel, section, cap, nib and all and I still like that Hero. Oh well! Bernie, stylophile | |

| nibs with a lot of flex (this is the politically correct (!) way to say 'flexible nibs') are not all that convenient to control in my experience with waterman ideals. anyhow, if you want a good modern pen that writes well, and in that price range, you cannot do better than a pelikan souveran M800, or aurora 88 series, both available at pengallery.com for a little under. | |
| Modern Pen Recommendations? ($200-$300) | |
| 2/5/2001: James Marshall | |
| Hi all. I was looking through a recent Levenger catalog at some of the fountain pens. I have two, but they're rather inexpensive ones as far as fountain pens go. I'm hoping to get a decent tax refund this year, I usually do, and was considering using this money to buy a more expensive pen. It's still up in the air, but I also wanted to get some suggestions from users as to which pens would be good buys. I'm not really into collecting, I'd rather have something nice that I can use if I want to. One pen that looked interesting was the Levenger-Omas Articula. The brief description basically says that the nib is so flexible that you can get fine, medium, or broad lines depending on the pressure applied. OK, I'm sure you get some variation with almost any pen, but this is really supposed to act like different width nibs. Does anyone have any experience with this pen in particular? I don't want to spend huge amounts of money, so any recommendations of pens in the area of $200-$300 would be appreciated. You can either post replies here (I'll be checking since I asked a question) or send them directly by e-mail if you'd prefer. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. | |

| Bulletin Board Mistake | |
| 2/4/2001: Dean | |
| Sorry everyone, late last night I made a mistake in editing the bulletin board and inadvertently lost some of the recent messages. I have restored as much as I could from backups. I know that there was an announcement about the upcoming Melbourne Pen Show, which is only a few weeks after the LA Show. The link for full details is http://www.vintagepens.com.au/show_hom.htm, and there is other information in Penlovers Pen Show area. Also Stylophiles Online Magazine has been updated for February including a New York Pen Show Update, Inoxcrom pens, Chris Thompsons custom made stainless steel Duofold, new color Waterman Carene, etc., check out the latest by clicking the Stylophiles buttons. I think that I lost about a half dozen other messages so if yours was one of them please repost and accept my apologies. Dean | |

| 2/2/2001: Saul Kitchener | |
| For Sergio and anyone else looking for pens in San Francisco be aware that they are a number of shops with some even selling vintage as well as new. Often overlooked, but with a knowledgeable manager is University Art, 128 Spear St.(just off lower Market St.). 415 974-1444. Ask for Doug Hildebrand. Golden Gate Pen Shop is the traditional San Francisco Pen Shop. Has some vintage pens, too. 260 Stockton St.,5th Floor, across from Union Square. Ask for Jenny Wang. 415 781-4809. Flax Art & Design, 1699 Market St., 415 552-2355, ask for Bjorn. Amsterdam Art in Berkeley has the best selection of fully restored vintage pens in the area. | Music nib pens | |
| 2/2/2001: Bill Stevens | |
| As Kristi wrote, the most obvious place to find a music pen is from someone who sells Platinum products. Note that Platinum made a smaller music pen, and then only for a very short time made a larger pen with a much larger nib, then discontinued music pens completely. I consider the larger pen to be superior to the smaller. The pen currently being offered on that auction site is the smaller one. | |

| starclips and maximas | |
| 2/2/2001: david | |
| Hello: Dick Schawann asked couple parker vac starclip questions after finding 135mm three band starclip pen in "lightly tinted green". He asked if all starclips were put on maximas. And if lightly tinted green was normal color or discoloration.... This could take awhile.... First. STarclips were put on all size pens and can be found on debs, shadowwave juniors, three band standards (late standards with speedline filler, just as long as Majors- 135mm and 1/2" thick cap- starting to sound familiar, perhaps?), Majors and Maximas. Your "three band" is giveaway. All lockdown-filler (short blindcap) three band pens ended around early 1938. Oversize three band pens likely in early 1937. Always possible a replacement factory clip was done as a 1939 starclip, but my guess is your pen is not that, but rather a three band "late standard" which comes in starclip mode. If your pen is not full 9/16ths wide at capopening, that is the giveaway. Anyway, mythology centers around (timing supports this) idea that starclip was an attempt at lifetime symbol, replaced by the more visible blue diamond month or two after starclip was tried. Conflicting with this is the observation that starclips can be found readily on shadowwaves and **three band 135mm late standards**, neither of which would ever carry a blue diamond and were never lifetime guaranteed. Oh well. the starclip is still of interest and value.A tentative observvation I've made (will expand on it in my vac book) is that while the obvious "lifetime pens" (majors, Maximas, debs) which show up with starclips have early 1939 date codes, the NON-lifetime pens with it (late three band pens like yours, and shadowwave juniors) seem to have the starclip on pens dated a quarter or two later in 1939. My speculation is that the starclip indeed was targeted as lifetime symbol, but once replaced by the much-advertise Blue Diamond, parker was left with extra starclips (never advertised as lifetime) so used them up on other pens. Guess this is like trying to extrapolate draughts from tree ring size. Heh. Anyway, your pen likely is the three ring late standard. As to the lite green tint. Clearly parker vacs can vary a bit in color from one batch to another of celluloid. Similarly pens can of course discolor. Silver pearl sometimes discolors to lite green (usually more toward brown). If the pen has nickel-tone trim, you have a discolored silver pen. If it has goldfill trim, probably is a green pen. Starclips add value to pen of course. Amount is variable and depends on multitudinous market forces. Probably say $30-50 extra on the retail front. Maybe less wholesale. I have this model pen in starclip in silver and golden pearl. If this is a true green pearl, i mite be interested in taking it off your hands- if you are so inclined. | |
