P.S. to my last post. The label on the Esterbrook reads, "J Holder only with Durachrome Pt. with Master Pt. Thanks!

Need info on Esterbrook Pen
      12/30/2002:  Mike
I just purchased a 1950s Esterbrook (blue mother of pearl) fountain pen with the original label. It is the J model and is in excellent condition. It has a small lever on the side, so I guess it is a lever-fill pen? On the nib it reads 9550. Can anyone tell me anything else about this pen. Value, exact date, etc. I'm just starting out and this is only my second pen I've purchased. Thank you and Happy New Year!

HERO 100 in stock -- His Nibs.com
      12/30/2002:  Norman Haase
Hello all! Just a quick note to let everyone know that I've gotten in a small number of the HERO 100 pens, which have been out-of-stock for some time. For those not familiar with them, this is Hero's single best-selling model worldwide. It's a hooded-nib pen, which draws its design elements from the famous Parker 51 and 61 pens. It sports a 14K nib, and while the majority of them are the usual Chinese fine, I actually received something entirely new in my experience with Hero: one green and one gray arrived with broad nibs!!!!! Unfortunately, this is not something I can specifically order through my source -- they actually came as a total surprise. As I write this, I have 6 black, 3 green (1 broad) and 4 gray (1 broad) left, after emailing customers who were on the waiting list for these, so act quickly if interested (first emails with a firm purchase commitment will be filled first). Click here to see all 3 colors available: http://www.hisnibs.com/'100'_series.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don't forget to take advantage of the December Special when ordering regular, non-sale pens! http://www.hisnibs.com/specials.htm HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL! re: Mont Blanc history, dating
      12/29/2002:  Len Provisor
When you see the marking W.Germany on a Mont Blanc pen, this indicates the manufacture being prior to the East and West German unification in 1990. I believe the stamping *Germany* followed on all products by all manufacturers very shortly after this event in 1990. So far as Mont Blanc products having the white triangle on top instead of the "snowflake" because it too closely resembled the Star of David, I've only heard rumors of this and do not know this as fact. BTW, pre-1990 resins used to produce Mont Blanc pens were better at this time and experienced fewer cracks or breakage.

Any info. on cheap brand.
      12/29/2002:  Jeff Goswick
Hi, everyone, I gave in to the "I ought to know better" temptation today and bought a seemingly cheaper brand Wels lever-fill demi. It appears to be celluloid, although it has cheaper components. I bought it to practice my skills from Frank Dubiel's repair book I bought this week. Thanks for anything anyone may know about it. I expect it is a cheaper knock-off brand, but I am still new to the hobby. Thanks!

RE: MontBlanc History
      12/29/2002:
For: Len Provisor. Thanking you For: Waco, some people have ......in the skull instead of something called Brain. For: Wayne R. Smith, Definitely It is, was not my intention to create controversy issue with my question. I was sincerely asked it after learning that montblanc pens with hexagonal star was not allowed for sell in Saudi Arabia. Instead they are making triangle on top tassies. This might be a rumors and that was the reason I asked this question. Still wanted to know the approximate date for Montblanc with W Germany

re: MontBlanc History
      12/29/2002:  Waco Johnny D
I thought the star referred to what lands on your head while you're in the park feeding the pigeons, wondering what the hell else can go wrong today while pondering the reasons for the fancy-ass yuppie pen you just bought at full list having just developed a hairline down its barrel for no apparent reason. On the other hand, I could be wrong. WJD.

Mont Blanc pens
      12/29/2002:  Richard
I have a MB Meisterstuck ballpoint pen. I believe its the real thing. I found it one day in a rental car. I tried to see if anyone reported it missing. No calls. Its been over two years now, so I guess its mine. I would like to see if its real. Can anyone tell me what to look for? If its real, I'll need a new barrel. Any reply would be appreciated. Thanks!, Richard

Montblanc star symbol
      12/29/2002:  Len Provisor
There have been many rumors about the origin of the "snowflake" or star symbol of Montblanc. I believe the most widely accepted answer is simply to represent the highest mountain in Europe, Mt Blanc at 4810 meters, and also the shape of the six valleys that surround the mountain. This number is also engraved on the nibs and also the limited edition number of some pen issues. The symbol does not and never was intended to represent the Jewish Star of David.

Montblanc History
      12/29/2002:  Wayne R. Smith
As far as I know the white symbol on top of Montblanc pens refers to the top of the Montblanc Mt. in the Alps. I can't tell if your question is asked with sincerety or you are trying to create controversy with your question. Wayne

MontBlanc History
      12/29/2002:
Can anyone provide information about Montblanc History. When they started to use serial number on clip ring? If a Sterling Silver 925 pen have serial number with "W Germany" how old this could be?? Does the white hexagonal star relates to jews symbol?? Posting on this board will be apreciated. Thanks

Waterman Mini Lady Cartridges
      12/29/2002:  Ray
One of the best places for ink is www.inkpalette.com. Only those 2 colors are shown there for the Mini Lady. That may be all that Waterman makes (that's true AFAIK for the short Universal carts).

Colibri Refill
      12/28/2002:  Jeremy

Parts request
      12/28/2002:  Howard Simms
Two parts requests. 1) A barrel and piston assembly for a Montblanc 342. 2) A cap jewel and clip for a '40's model (striped) duofold. Thanks!

re: WASP
      12/28/2002:  Ross
First: no relation to the other Ross. Second: WASP = Walter A Sheaffer Pen (Co). You were correct! It was a low-end line of Sheaffer pens during the 30s. However, some of them are very attractive. I particularly like the Clippers, with a metallic checkerboard pattern in silver, gold, green, or blue. The Addipoints were interchangeable. Nice article on the pens at http://www.penhero.com/PenGallery_SheafferWaspAddipoint.htm -- the other Ross

re: Filling my fountain pen
      12/28/2002:  Waco Johnny D
The gold nib and black feed are inserted as a pair into the bottom of the section, which is the part you hold with your fingertips as you write. When you fill the pen you must dip it deep enough into the bottle to immerse the bottom of the section. Some ink bottles or their ink level do not allow this depth of insertion; if yours is one of these then you will have to make the appropriate alternate arrangements (temporary transfer to another container just for filling, or buy more ink so you have a full bottle to dip into, or buy ink in a bottle more-suited to the filling requirements of your pen). It is possible the piston seals are so worn on your pen that it just won't pull ink up, but try the above first. In fact you may want to try just dipping half the pen into a glass of water and seeing if you can get water into the pen. This is also a good place to experiment to see exactly how deep the pen must be stuck into an ink bottle for liquide to be able to be drawn into the barrel. Finally you will probably want to read the fountain-pen FAQ at http://www.ccsneinc.com/bjanz/pens.htm. WJD.

Wasp pen
      12/27/2002:  Gary Ross
I recently was given a beautiful fountain pen about which I can find no information. It is a Wasp Addipoint made in Fort Madison, Iowa (possibly by Sheafer?). The nib reads "Wasp 232 Fine Made in USA". Can anyone give me any information about this pen or tell me where to look? Thanks, Ross.

Filling my fountain pen
      12/27/2002:  Mike
I've purchased a 1950s Mont Blanc fountain pen. It has 340/9 on the tip. The seller said it worked, but I can't get it to fill with ink. One end twists from left to right, and I can see a plunger type thing inside going up and down as I twist the end. I was told to dip the nib in ink and twist the end, but nothing happens. Any ideas? Thanks! This is my first fountain pen purchase.

Vintage Aurora
      12/26/2002:  Chris
Re vintage Aurora pens, Battersea Pen Home usually has a good selection & it is worth asking them if they have any models which are not listed yet.Mr Gray supplied me with a fabulous RA3 earlier this year with a super flexi original nib at a very reasonable price. Link: www.penhome.com

vintage Auroras
      12/26/2002:  Kristi
Get a copy of Letizia Jacopini's book The History of the Italian Fountain Pen 1900 - 1950 which is the best volume I'm aware of in that specific area of pen collecting. I have several vintage Aurora 88s and sometimes see them for sale at pen shows. Cost has risen quite a bit the last few years but they are great users, especially those with flexy nibs.

Gold Pen
      12/26/2002:  Bill R.
If it is a solid gold Sheaffer, it would be marked 14K on the parts (clip, cap, barrel) More likely it's gold fill, which is thicker than gold plate, and wears very well. Even gold plate can hold up pretty well if it's done right. Sheaffer made pens in all three varieties, although the solid gold versions are much less common than the gold filled or gold plated ones.

Gold Pen
      12/26/2002:  Richard
Hello all, I have just found an old pen in an old dresser drawer. Its a sheaffer lifetime, very good condition. The whole thing is gold, with long thin grooves up and downt he pen. The nib says "sheaffer's Lifetime 14K" Its a skrip cartridge system. I am wondering is it solid gold? I have been told that it must be, because gold plating would be wearing off it in some places due to its age. If anyone might have some information about it or could help me find out more about it, I would be ever so greatful. This pen has brought me into the wonderful world of pens!

Vintage Aurora
      12/25/2002:  Jack
Does any body know of a place to acquire vintage Aurora fountain pens? Or even just some information on them? I have been all over the internet looking for anything on vintage Auroras, with little luck. Thank you for your help! -JACK-

Ink Capacity
      12/25/2002:  Dane W
Merry Christmas! I am curious about the volume of a standard cartridge and that of a disposable pen. While I don't expect fountain pens to be the economical choice, I would like to know how the different options compare. Can any of you point me in the right direction?

Parker 51 Flighter GT Stainless
      12/24/2002:  Matthew Schmeer
I would like to repair a Parker 51 Flighter GT Stainless (Aeromatic filler) that I inherited a few yearts ago when my grandfather died. It is well used and missing exterior parts (cap bands, etc.). However, the primary problem is the filling mechanisim--it's shot. The bladder is soft, but the catheter that takes the ink into the nib is disconnected from the nib; ergo, no ink uptake. Still, I'd like to get it working for sentimental value. I have no idea how much the pen is worth, and so I don't know what's a resonable repair cost. How much would/should a repair like this cost, and where is a good place to get it repaired? I live in South Carolina, near Myrtle Beach. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out. I stumbled across this website doing a Google search for fountain pens, and judging from the posts I've read, you folks know your stuff.

Montblanc 75th Anniv. LE Silver Pinstripe RB

More waves?
      12/22/2002:  david i
Oy vey. Then we have Shadow Wave Desk Pens. Forgetting the typical lockdown era pens (simply made into deskpens by adding taper), there are at least two dedicated forms of Desk pen, found probably in Black, Silver, Golden, though thankfully each style is in one size only. The first looks somewhat like a lockdown-filler pen barrel, but with smooth (unmarked) Band encircling the barrel. Has (if i recall) a removable section and has threads, like the earlier Vac deskpens, but cannot convert to pocket pen due to band on the barrel. The later desk pen looks like the 1939+ dedicated parker vac desk pen, with dedicated non-threaded section and with barrel band, strangely enough done in the same style as a vac major, capband (///\\\\////) Well, i'm getting a headache. Signing off and going to sleep. regards david

shadowwave follow up
      12/22/2002:  david i
I suppose we can add a 7th and 8th form of the Shadowwave if we consider the 2nd gen larger (junior) and smaller (junior debutante) models with the "Jeweler's Band" too, in black/ silver, gold colors. Amazing how the spreado of vacs to collect just keeps growing.... david

ShadowWave Question/Answer
      12/22/2002:  David I
Ken has found an interesting Shadow Wave and asks some good questions. Shadow Wave vacs come in *4* commonly recognized models, really representing a "larger" and "smaller" version of two general eras of Vac-dom. The pen Ken has found is a funkier later variant ( found in a larger and smaller form two, thus representing a discrete *5th* and *6th* form of the Wave). The pen can be found as "JUNIOR" and "SLENDER JUNIOR" lockdown variants, each double jewel, lockfiller, two thin cap-bands. Once the vacs were switched to the so-called "speedline filler" era with non-locking metal-filler pens that at least still appear to be double jewel, you can find a "JUNIOR" (now longer overall than the lockdown filler, but a bit thinner at the gripping section) and in "JUNIOR DEBUTANTE" form, which has a debutante >>==<< type cap-band. Catalogs show these at latest(best i can tell) in the 1939 catalog, but it is apparent these were built through 1941 as well. However, 1942 is a neat year for Vac-dom. Besides the switch to plastic filler and loss of the bottom jewel, several variants were introduced with a medium-fat single capband (not as fat as the earlier "jeweler's band") that had horizontal lines running all around. Regular equivelents to the "major" and "deb" can be found like this. Also vacs done in "duofold" type plastic. And, yes.... also shadowwaves. So far i have seen them in black, silver, golden, and green (i wish i had not seen green, but that is another tale). These appear in the 5" standard/junior size and in the deb size, thinner and around 4 5/8 long. I have several in my collection but not all of them. I would be interested to discuss trade for a larger-size GREEN and for a smaller-size BROWN. Please feel free to back channel me with other info/questions. Regards. David

syracuse pen dinner monday dec 23 with special guest
      12/22/2002:  david i
Yes. The Syracuse Random Smattering of Folks What Collect Pens will indeed meet for Dinner. And we have special guest. We will meet at 7pm at Appleby's Restaurant on Eerie Blvd at 7pm, Monday Dec 23. Directions and phone number for Applebies will be provided way below. We also are very lucky to have a special guest. Every so often, a figure well-known in Pendom happens by coincidence to be passing through Upstate NY just about the time we plan to get together for pen shmooze. Couple years ago, Joel Hamilton and Sherrell Tyree looped through Rochester en route to the DC show, when we were having a Rochester pen collector's meeting. This time, we are very lucky to have a well-known expert in all things "51" visiting Syracuse from the Chicago Area. You've seen his articles in the odd pen mag, teaching about the 51. If you've had chance to meet him at pen shows you've had chance to look at folder after folder of exotic and neat Parker 51's. If you join us for dinner tomorrow you can say "hi" in person. Undoubtedly he is at last as into the 51 as some other fellow is into the Parker Vacumatic. If you have any questions after the info below, please email me early-ish tomorrow. LEave phone number. I will email or call you back before evening. At least if the hospital isn't too nuts tomorrow. Anyway, Dinner is at 7pm. Dec 23 Monday. Appleby's restaurant phone number (if you get lost) is 315-445-7000 We picked it as it has better lighting than last dinner spot. To get to appleby's take the NY state throughway to EXIT 35 Carrier Circle. This is east (toward albany) on the throughway, if you are coming down route 81 from Canada- as route 81 hits the throughway at exit 36. So, exit onto the Carrier Circle Exit and get onto Thompson ROad which parallels the Carrier Plant (as the toll guy how to get onto Thompson road if unsure). Take Thompson Road a mile or two?? to a big intersection and make a Left onto Erie Blvd. On Erie blvd, get in left lane. You will see a HECHINGERS PLAZA on left for an old out of business Hechingers store. You can (rumor has it) either turn left into HECHINGERS PLAZA or do a U-Turn just past it, then once turned around can turn into the PLAZA. Applebies is in the Plaza. All told, about 5 minutes from the Thruway. we should have a few folks there. Regards david isaacson

Shadow wave
      12/22/2002:  Ken Smoot
Did Parker make the shadow wave in full size?. I thought that shadow waves came only in junior sizes, two cap bands, the more stocky cap and all feather clips. Came across a standard size, streamline (definetly different from the jr shadow waves) wider single cap band that has "Parker" on the clip. Has a "2" (1942?) on the barrel, vacumatic and made in USA with the plastic filler. Hadn't seen this before so naturally curious. Thoughts from vac cognoscenti? Thank you. Regards, Ken

I am having two account problems, and I would appreciate ideas from the group. One is Ashford. OK, I read all the "feeding frenzy" posts, passed up on the event, and finally decided to go for it, after all. But 1)my account info is not up-to-date; 2)I cannot change it; and 3)Ashford either responds with "boilerplate" e-mails or not at all. Not that crucial, as this is all discretionary and I am probably better off without it. But I am wondering what recourse I have when the website does not allow meaccess to my account, their phone line is useless--over 20 minutes wait--and their e-mails do not address the situation. The other one is PayPal, which is near and dear to many of us, and much more crucial. I have money in my account, but cannot get it out. Again, their website does not allow me to interact with my account, and their e-mails are either boilerplate, or non-existent. In this case *they have my money* so it is not discretionary. I am sorry to bother the group with this, but I do not know where to go from here. Thanks for any ideas.

NEXT DYRACUSE PEN DINNER
      12/19/2002:  david i
Hello list. Been busy up in Syracuse. Nice (!) housing courtesy of St. Joes Hospital. Soon i shall have enough Hilton Points to fly somewhere warm. It isn't warm in Syracuse. Miss NYC but will be back there soon for a bit. Anyway, couple of us are getting the bug for another Syracuse Pen Dinner. I have but a few vacs with me, and haven't had time to post even about the very funky ebay find from last week- a black Duofold 1939 "toothbrush" pen (of course with no toothbrushes as it is black) with Jeweler's band and an early 1940 imprint, though definitely a 1939 style pen. Anyway, i fershure am getting early withdrawal symptoms being so far away from the collection Ron emailed me and suggested Monday Nite Dec 23 for another pen gathering. The last one was much fun. If anyone else is interested please lemme know so i can figure the details, though likely the "details" will be very similar to last time around. Carousel Mall. Table. Food. Beverage. That sorta thing. regards david i.

Fake Montblancs
      12/16/2002:  Stephen Lam
During my recent overseas trip, I came across practically thousands of fake Montblancs. They came in all forms and sizes but are mostly ballpoints and rollerballs. I guess it is too difficult to produce nibs that resemble the real thing. I would recommend to anyone who wants to buy Montblancs to exercise caution. Where "special" designs are offered, it will be wise to check the Montblanc website to see if there is actually such a model.

I NEED HELP ID'ING A PEN
      12/15/2002:  Mike
Hello Pen Friends: A friend has ask that I identify a pen and value it. Quite frankly after studying this pen I have no clue. The pen has the most incredible full overlay I have seen. It is deeply engraved. The workmanship is very precise and very finely done. The pattern is art nouveau. It has 5 pedaled flowers and very fancy art nouveau vines and leaves. The spaces between the flowers and vines contain the usual vertical lines and are also hand hammered. The pen is rolled gold over black hard rubber. The lower end is covered. The section is uncovered. The nib is marked warranted in an arc and USA just above the section. The nib is very broad across the shoulders and is shaped something like a playing card's spade suit. The breather hole is a simple round hole. The feed looks like a Grieshaber's thin rectangular type. It is 5.25" long capped. It's diameter is in between a Waterman's 052 and 052 1/2. It is a lever filler and on the lever there is an artists pallet, with a thumb hole. Within the palette is the word 'ART' in block letters. There is a 'L' type clip that I beleive is a replacement or was added as it is silver in color and is marked 'FAICHNEY.' I can send a scan. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. Mike

FS--Omas Club orange/red Paragon FP
      12/15/2002:  Nick Dobson
I joined the Club to get the Arlecchino, so I'm selling this year's Club pen. It's the full-size Paragon (I believe) in an orange/red color w/ 3 gold cap bands & an 18k F nib. Uninked, w/box & warranty card. I believe the MSRP on this model, if it were a standard production model, would be $350. I'd like $200 + shipping. If that's too high, then make me an offer. A pic of the pen can be found on the Omas Club webpage, whose URL is given below. Thanks, Nick Link: http://www.comune.bologna.it/iperbole/clubisas/membpen.htm

His Nibs.com update
      12/15/2002:  Norman Haase
Hello all! This update is partially a repeat, except for this first section, as pens that I've ordered have been very slow in arriving during this busy time of year. Expect a new update in a couple of days, hopefully. The two new pens I'm carrying (for me, at least) are both Sheaffers. Both are NOS (new, old stock) models: First up is the Sheaffer Prelude, but this is with the older (and nicer I think), two-toned nib with engraved scrollwork. Neatest of all -- it's purple! Purple is an under-represented color in fountain pens, and hence always seems to be very popular. These were a special run production, designed for college bookstores. Read more about the Purple Prelude here: http://www.hisnibs.com/prelude1.htm Second up is an Imperial. This one is all black, which I've not carried before. Take a look at all of the Imperial here: http://www.hisnibs.com/imperials.htm ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- I've obtained a few of the Sheaffer Holly Special Edition fountain pens with fine nibs. Read more about them here: http://www.hisnibs.com/holly.htm ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- A neat cigar pen has been added to The Palace, but I only have a few in stock at the moment: http://www.hisnibs.com/the_palace.htm ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Also, my first order of Gellisimo gel refills have arrived: See them all here: http://www.hisnibs.com/ink_refills.htm ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Don't forget to take advantage of the December Special when ordering regular, non-sale pens! http://www.hisnibs.com/specials.htm Regards, Norman Haase His Nibs.com www.hisnibs.com For holiday gift ideas: www.hisnibs.com/the_palace.htm http://www.giftlift.vstoregifts.com/

Looking for Waterman Phileas, Grey Marble
      12/14/2002:  Hank
I am searching for a Grey Marble Waterman Phileas fountain pen with a medium nib. I had one for several years and had become quite attached to it. In a recent military move this favorite pen was lost. I have searched everything I own several times to no avail. If you have one and would be willing to part with it, please contact me at hjfusmc@earthlink,net, Thanks, Hank

Paper Mate FP
      12/13/2002:  Scott
The PaperMate FP takes standard international cartridges, which are readily available. There is speculation the pen was made by MontBlanc,as the converter is virtually identical to an MB and the pen was made in Germany.

Pelican 800
      12/13/2002:  Dave
I bought a Pelican 800 ballpoint with a vermeil cap at Ashford's 1/2 price sale. The site said that the suggested retail price was $300. (I paid $113.) Does $300 sound right. They had the same pen in the 300 line for the same price.

Repair of Paper Mate Capri
      12/13/2002:  Biggguy
I collect old Paper Mate pens, and I have a whole handful- must be at least ten of them- of the original "Capri" (some refer to it as a Capri Mk III- came out circa 1955) where the retractors no longer "catch" to extend the point. As I understand this is a rather common problem with this model. Does anyone out there know of a fix for this? Thanks in advance!

Info needed- Paper Mate FP
      12/13/2002:  Biggguy
Hello, I recently came into possession of a Paper Mate fountain pen- never knew they made such a beast- which seems to be of West German manufacture. I'd like to try it, and it seems to be of the cartridge type, with a bottle converter. As I'm not inclined to mess around with ink bottles, can anyone tell me what cartridge this kid uses? I asked the guy I got it from, and he didn't know. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello, looking to buy a Parker 51
      12/12/2002:  Carl E
Hi, all. I am new to this board, and to fine pen buying in general. I bought a Pelikan 800 roller ball a few months ago, but have decided to "move up" to a fountain pen. As I looked around, I thought I would start with an older, vintage pen rather than another new pen. Anyway, what I want to start with is one of the later Parker 51s with the aerometric filler. In particular, a black one with a gold filled cap. I am not looking for one that is mint, but one that is in reasonable condition (with a reasonable price) to use on an everyday basis rather than for a collection. Any tips or suggestions? I know from other hobbies that auctions like eBay are risky and that a lot of junk ends up there so I am looking for something more reliable as a starting point. Thanks for any help you all can give!

re: SHEAFFER BALANCE
      12/12/2002:  Waco Johnny D
ISTR that the pen was shipped only with a M nib. Thus a nib other than that would indicate a swap from original and devalue the pen. This is the lever filler you're referring to, correct?

Pen Trading Etiquette
      12/9/2002:  Shawn R.
Can someone describe the procedures/etiquette involved in trading pens? I've been trading on eBay for quite some time now, but am at a loss about how to enact a trade. I see that quite a few trades (or trade offers) being discussed here. How is the "trust" factor dealt with? I am interested in trading a Montblanc LeGrande Platinum Trim Fountain Pen (BOLD) in absolute Mint condition (reservoir filled once), and am interested in other Montblanc's or Parker Duofolds. Would greatly appreciate anyone's input on the procedure! Thanks!!

Getting started
      12/9/2002:  Steve
So, I go to the mall one day to buy a simple bullet pen because it looks convenient, and I wander into Paradise Pen. I don't know what happened, but I bought the bullet pen as well as a Waterman Carene (ballpoint). I had never spent more than $2 on a pen until that day. Now, I find myself looking at all kinds of fountain pens, as well as the vintage fountain pens. I would like to start somewhere with fountain pens, but I don't know where. Can someone suggest some pens (new and old) that I could buy to start out with? Also, is there a cure for this sickness? ;-) Thanks!

Omas Fountain Pen
      12/9/2002:  Beverly
Hey everyone, I was just given an Omas Fountain Pen, Model 8201C, the type with the Advanced Cartridge System. Can somebody explain to me how to get into the pen? I have tried unscrewing the top and it unscrews so far and just stops. It won't pull or push, will only screw back on. Is there some trick? Thanks all.

Wanted: Montblanc Noblesse #1922
      12/8/2002:  naomi
Can someone direct me to how I can find this pen. It was my friend's all time favorite pen & unfortunately when I picked his brain to find out what I could about it, I didn't even know what questions to ask. So all I know is that the one he owned was goldish/goldplated? - but I don't know if it comes in different finishes (the finish not really being important). I don't even know if it's a ballpoint or roller - I'm assuming it's not a fountain pen. And does the style # determine all that info? I also believe he said that it's smaller than most Montblancs. I think he lost it in the 80's, just to help place it in time. Can anyone please help me find one and/or educate me a little, so I can know what I'm looking for and maybe even find something close. I just bought a Noblesse on ebay from '69 w/ only the hopes that it could be IT, or something similar, (which I can't keep doing randomly). I've already heard that any current Noblesses are nothing like this one. I'd be very happy if I could see a photo, find a catalogue, get specs, learn more, etc. I'm determined and would be very appreciative. Also, I'm assuming it's not particularly highly sought after or valuable, correct? So what might be a fair price to pay w/out getting ripped off? Close to what I paid for the one on ebay?

Big Ben green marbled for trade
      12/8/2002:  Steffen Munkvad
I have an excellent to near mint green marbled Big Ben fountain pen from around the 1930`es to 1940`es. A few superficial scratches on the cap are the flaws I can see. It is an push button filler needing a new sac. I have no pictures to send you but see Stylophiles July 2001 on Big Bens. Right under the name Mike Stevens is a row of pens and mine looks most like number 5 from the left but is green marbled and the end knob is black. Original 14 karat gold nib, size 2, engraved "Big Ben". I would like a Parker 75 Sterling Silver Cisele ball pen in near mint/unused condition. I am willing to put some dollars with my Big Ben if I also get the corresponding Parker 75 fountain pen in an excellent/near mint condition and with a medium or broad nib. Best regards from Denmark (Big Ben and Penol country) Steffen

Buying Montblanc
      12/8/2002:  John
First time poster here. I would like to ask you pros a question. I am a fairly new Montblanc collector. I would really like to buy a E.A. Poe FP. But it seems the Pen from "official dealers" are about $200 more than some pens from some sellers on Ebay. But then again, how safe are the Montblancs on Ebay? Is a totally box-sealed Montblanc guaranteed to be authentic? A more general question: just how wide-spread are Montblanc knockoffs? How can you tell? Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

His Nibs.com update

Hello all! There's a new Stylophiles review of the Monteverde Black Tie Invincia and the Charisma in turquoise which you might like to take a look at here: http://www.PenLovers.net/stylophiles/dec02/12mv.htm Both are now out-of-stock for me, but I'll be re-ordering on Monday. Silver Pens
      12/7/2002:  Andrey Baron
Hello every one! I have a few silver pens like montblanc proust and others. My question is how you clean silver pens since the surface is not completely smooth therefore a silver cloth won’t do the job. It bothers me when I see those black spots of oxidation. Does anybody has the same problem and what is the best way to solve this dilemma.

I dropped my Diplomat Classic Collection pen and damaged the nib. However, I really like the pen and don’t want to replace it. I am looking for the contact information for Diplomat factory or its service dealers to get the damaged nib replaced. I would appreciate it if someone could give me a pointer to Diplomat website. Thanks, Roger

MOnt Blanc Knockoffs
      12/6/2002:  steve
Well, if you got a knockoff, you most likely wound up with a better pen than a real MB. The fakes are made of better plastic and perform much more reliably than the crappy real ones.

Identifying Mont Blanc Knockoff

Can anyone direct me to a checklist for identifying counterfeit Mon Blanc pen knockoffs. I believe that I got stung from an Ebay sale. Has anyone else been taken this way?

Authenticity
      12/4/2002:  Fred
Read books, study the pens and learn. Go to shows and dealers see what the pens are like, learn to identify the characteristics of each model and its variations, learn which nib goes with which model, which filler system, and what the overall pen design is like. Once you acquire the basics then you might have a sense of "composite pens", fakes and the like. It will take work, effort and committment--but if you care and don't want to fritter money away you will do this. It will not be easy and there are no shortcuts. Buy the books on MB's and read the periodicals--yes, back issues too--and have it in your head! I am amazed that folks will spend $$$$ money on pens without knowing what they're buying and without doing any background research. This is not the kind of stuff that comes by intuition! Get to know someone who knows about MB's and learn from them. Good Luck!

I'm just getting into collecting and enjoy the "basic" mont blanc meisterstuck series. However, with all the clones and fakes how do I know I'm not getting or gotten burned? Any and all help is appreciated.

sheaffer white dot pen
      12/3/2002:  einv
you most likely have a sheaffer 'targa', if the nib is shaped like a dolphin, or a sheaffer 'fashion', if the nib is shaped like a normal nib. in the latter case, you may find replacements at www.arcamax.com (under 'office products' section) where such pens are selling for half price, with free shipping, or if you want to pay closer to retail (but get great service in the process) norman hasse at hisnibs.com has them also.

Shaffer White Dot Slim Fountain
      12/3/2002:  Michael M
Hi - I have a black Shaeffer white dot slim fountain pen, black metal with gold accents and nib. I love it for its balance and shape. Unfortunately, it was damaged when the ink in the cartridge dried out and glued to the barrel. The barrel had to be unscrewed with pliers. I would like more information on when this pen was manufactured and where I might find another one. Thanks - Michael

Old Esterbrook Display Case and ...
      12/2/2002:  Rob
Just took posession of something that's been in the family for a long time. Our family business was a, among other things, a business supply store that started probably around the 1910's to 20's and that's where it came from. Anyway, it's a display case for fountain pen tips that was meant to sit on top of something. About two feet wide, angeled from back to front at it's highest poing around 5 or 6 inches high. Two glass doors that open and are held open away from each other. Red paing along the top with white letters saying Esterbrook PENS. Total of 32 compartments for tips (is that the correct reference?) with a drawer out the back. Little plaques with the names of tips that were supposed to reside within. There must be a couple thousand of the tips because there are so many of some of the small ones ... obiously never used and in perfect condition. Some simple silver tubes, some gold and blue with moving tops. A little instruction booklet in the cae talke about square nib style lettering pins amonst others and all are represented. I'm not looking to sell .. just have always liked this thing and the contents but am completely ignorant about it them and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction for info. Please email directly rob@rlc.net. Thanks for any help.

where art thou vanishing point?
      12/2/2002:  +d
any leads on where i can track down an OLD style namiki vanishing point??? i've recently lost mine and was heartbroken to find that they have been redesigned (for the worse in my opinion, if i wanted a bulbous cliche of a fountain pen i'd just order one out of the next inflight magazine i thumb through!) i saw one for sale on ebay, but it was the wrong color... so if any one knows of a (actually i'd buy 2) black/silver or black/black that's available please oh please let me know.
