Just a few words about St. Nick and pens. My dear wife got me the new Stipula Etruria, absoluyely goreous, and writes very nicely. Minor complaint about the piston-fill adapter - the barrel is milled so that the adapter does not quite fit, and the pen barre; does not screw down flush with the section when the adapter is in place, and thus the cap tends to cross thread when screwed onto the barrel. I simply replaced the original with a Watermsn adapter, so the pen is AOK, though it loses the external piston fill capability. Also, before Christmas we went intoi NYC for a couple days of B'way and generally boosting the hard hit economy. That co-incided with the FPH show, and we got a few Conway Stewarts - Dinky, Dandy (both for her), and Churchill (for me). All A+ pens. The Churchill is a beauty. You know you have a solid chunk of pen in hand with this one. The real ebonite feeds do wet slowly, but it's worth waiting a couple of days for the nice wet feel. My wife loves the Dandy - fantastic writer, and very very pretty. Also got a nice Waterman 100 Year set - pen and pencil - in box with original 100 year guarantee paper. Cool. Writes OK but I'm not really an X-fine fan. Overall, Im happy with Mr. Claus. |

Dear pen experts (I am new at this). I wanted to ask the Conklin experts about the history of a small FP 4 in long (closed) w level fill (not crescent). On the barrel it says "Toledo, Ohio rolled gold". In the nib it has Conklin "STEN" Toledo. Thank to you all, happy holidays. Nellie |

| MB Dickens
|
| |
12/30/2001: jeff peirce |
|
The MB Dickens fountain pen lists at $750, and the ballpoint is, I recall, $350. I would look at one before serious consideration of a
purchase. The grossly oversized cap, and ugly gray color makes the Dickens fountain pen the least attractive LE Montjunk ever made. The ballpoint is a little more in proportion, and , therefore, more attractive. I would bet there will be many inexpensive Dickens for sale in the coming years. |
| Philadelphia pen show soon
|
| |
12/30/2001: david i |
|
hello.
The Philadelphia pen show is about three weeks away. Weekend of Jan 18.
For those who've never been to a penshow, this is a great one with which to start.
I'm happy i'll be able to get away from work to go to this show. It will be first pen show i've hit three
years running.
This is a nice sized show with plenty of dealers of new and vintage pens.
Geoff and Bernie from Berliner Pens are gracious hosts.
The auction has has very nice items the last two years- though i shouldn't mention that- don't want to
miss out on bargains.
Good lighting and nice atmosphere.
At least two well-known book authors from Pendom will be there.
There is no better opportunity for concentrated learning about pens than a pen show.
Hope to see some new faces from the lists there.
best

| Some stuff for sale, and re:stock splits
|
| |
12/30/2001: Pearce |
|
Hello to all, and I hope everyone has a wonderful new year. I have several pencils, as well as a few pens for sale. The pens include two Sheaffer Balance Senior's. One is in black, the other in jade green. Two or three parker 51's, (sorry no double jewel models), and some vacs. I also have several nice pencils, including some skyline moire pencils, and sheaffer balance pencils, and a couple of others from name brand companies. If you are interested email me back for scans, and prices. To answer someones question below a stock split is when the company takes one share, or several, and makes more. The owner of any share gets so many more, and by this the company will be able to get more money to expand, etc. For example if the stock split is 3/2 you would get three shares for every two you own. Hope that helps. |

12/29/2001: Norman Haase |
|
Hello all!
As I write this during the last few days of 2001, I just want to thank
everyone for the support you've shown to His Nibs.com during this past year.
It's been a year that none of us will forget, but one positive was certainly
the sense of community felt through our nation as a whole -- one which
echoes the camaraderie we've always experienced in the much smaller pen
community. I sincerely hope that sense of national unity can be carried
forth successfully through 2002 and beyond.
I look forward to seeing many of you at the Philadelphia Pen Show, January
18th -- 20th. It's been awhile since I've done a pen show, and it will be
fun to reconnect with everyone.
Please note that I'll be offline tonight and most of tomorrow, as I have a
table tennis tournament which begins at 8:00 AM Sunday morning (so much for
sleeping in!). Rest assured that I'll reply to your emails as soon as I can
move my body again .
Basically, this is a recapping of some of the limited quantity pens
mentioned just prior to Christmas -- minus those that have sold out
completely. Now that you have all of that Christmas cash burning a hole in
your pocket, I thought I'd tempt you again .
First up is a pen set (fountain pen and ballpoint), that I carried years
ago, sold out of quickly, and have only recently been able to get a few more

| FS Duofold Senior
|
| |
12/29/2001: Lou Kidder |
|
FOR SALE
A Parker Duofold I had for sale on my last list was just returned – I guess I hadn’t looked at it closely enough. Here’s the deal: This is a Parker Senior Duofold (~mid 1920s) in red permanite. The imprint is weak, but ‘Parker Duofold’ is readable. The cap band is good, but the clip is brassed a bit. The blind cap is sharp and black, the cap top is oxidized a bit. I can’t see any repairs to the body, but the cap has a couple of repaired, stable cracks (only noticeable under magnification). The nib (which appears correct for the pen) has a couple of pliers marks at the base. The nib is broad and writes very smoothly.
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe this is a $400 pen if in perfect condition. Would $100 be fair? This is a good user and looks very nice.
Scan available.
Thanks.

Please be careful when attempting to purchase items from this person. The item you want will probably be "already sold" but "we have another, how much would you like to pay for it ?" When you make a offer the person replies he will consider your offer & get back to you. By doing this to a quantity of persons the seller establishes a mean average value & asks for more !
Then if you finally agree on a price please don't be holding your breath very long waiting for item & don't be surprised if same item is damaged if you recieve it. |

| Waterman #12
|
| |
12/27/2001: Ron |
|
I have a Waterman #12 pen. Reasonable condition, but I'm wondering about the cap and clip. The scan www.dreamscape.com/ronzorn/12.jpg will show you what I mean. The pen has gold bands, the cap a chrome plated clip cap. The fading on the barrel pretty well matches where the cap stops, which leads me to think that the cap is original. Has anyone run across this before? Is this normal for this vintage Waterman? TIA |
| Rob's Sterling Cisele Duofold
|
| |
12/27/2001: Esther |
|
This sounds like a winner. I beleive that they did have some Duofold's in sterling silver, but not in the Cisele pattern. A large Duofold in that design would be great. All we need to do now is convince Parker (or Sanford). Incidently, talking about sterling, the Waterman L'Etalon in that metal is really stunning. |

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This beholder thinks the Mosaic is not particularly attractive.
Besides the appearance, what is with this "one size fits all" approach to the medium nib and producing
the pen in only one size? Is this the Henry Ford approach to car color applied to premium pen production? |

| Parker Mosaic
|
| |
12/27/2001: Esther |
|
I thought that the following information, coming directly from the product manager at Sanford, is worthwhile posting; especially when so much "speculative" stuff has been said.
"The mosaic is made from three different finishes. One piece is the same as the Pearl & Grey Duofold finish; one piece is the same as the Pearl & Black Duofold finish; and one piece is a new blue finish. These are all new pieces that are shaped specifically for the Duofold Mosaic. Scraps are
never used. Since the process is almost completely done by hand, no two Mosaics will ever be the same. The fusion process used is quite unique in order to give the seamless look that the final product has. After fusion,
the Mosaic goes through the same rigorous hand polishing that every Parker Duofold must go through before it is deemed the quality that Parker demands".
Happy New Year!

| Authentic Montblanc?
|
| |
12/26/2001: Josh |
|
My wife just purchased a MontBlanc MeisterStuck Classique ballpoint pen and 0.7mm pencil (black + gold) but I am wondering about the authenticity.
On the engraved band around the barrel, besides the embossed "Montblanc - Meisterstuck" there also appears the word "Pix" (or so it looks to my eye) in cursive script, possibly followed by a superscript "TM" for trademark(?).
My own Meisterstuck, which is older, does not have this "Pix" script on the band around the barrel.
Her new pen does have "Germany" and a serial number engraved on the clips.
Any advise here as to this "Pix script? Is this a new thing? Is this pen authentic? Also, any info relating to what are 'valid' serial numbers, if any codes, etc. are known and can be applied?
Thanks in advance folks! |

I recently touted my fountain pen collection to a banker friend of mine. Then his wife indicated she wanted me to get a pen she could give him for their upcoming anniversary. Her parameters were pretty difficult. She liked the Waterman pens in the catalogue I loaned her. But she didn't want to spend more than $100. This is tough because I would like to see him get a gold nib. I am currently bidding on a Waterman Lehman 200 but I don't know anything about this pen. It looks nice. Maybe the bid will jump way over $100 - hard to tell. But I would very much appreciate suggestions here and even offers to sell me a pen which fit the bill. Rick |

Yep. Let emphasize Jon's point. No doubt some dealers might have legit reason (they'd been burned) etc to say "no return, use your knowledge, etc", or "returns only if i misdescribed it". That last one is nasty. Since descriptions largely are subjective or at best incomplete- just how does one enforce such a retunr?? The net effect of such dealer's decent or not-so-decent intent is to put the buyer greatly at risk. There is no way to "bid with my knowledge" if the seller does not know how to identify cracks, or chooses not to post knowledge of suc h flaws. While i am rarely perfect in following my own "edicts", i just don't bid on any "no return" item. What happens if the prototypce vintage duofold you are bidding on has a modern-manufactured cap on it? What happens if the pen is trashed? What happens if the "mint because i have never used it" 50 year old pen is full of ink?? One must extend courtesy and good ethics to dealers when bidding, but one must also be vewwy vewwy careful. Ebay can be dangerous. best

In reading Richard Rosen's piece on internet photography, he refers to Parker75.com, a great site for learning about P75's. The Hall of Shame is particularly interesting and points up one important fact. Do not bid on anything on ebay or elsewhere unless the seller is willing to take the item back. I follow this religiously and many times I really really want to bid on something, but seller has an "as is" or "no returns" policy. Occassionally I will try to convince them otherwise, because they are doing the buyer and themselves a disservice. Bidding will always be lower, because the price must reflect the risk of a dud pen. Most sellers don't get it. Unless you can return it...don't bid. |

Really enjoyed reading about Lih-Tah Wong's experience in the "Hall of Shame" on his web site regarding his eBay
experience on the purchase of a Parker GPDiamante. I was envious of his ability to take sharp close-up pictures of the
defects on this pen. I've been trying to take close-up photos with a Sony Mavica 75 that I purchased for this purpose. It
has a 10x optical zoom. I can get really close ( 1") but when I finally get my photo on the internet it's never as sharp as
the kind of photo I often see.. Am I missing the picture? (pun intended)

| Duofold Mosaic
|
| |
12/23/2001: Alan |
|
I think the Mosaic is one stunning pen and really don't care if it was made out of "scraps" or not. If it was, well that was just being resourceful on Parker's part. Moreover, the pen certainly has a modernist flair and it is indeed hard to believe that the same people that produced the pearl and black and the Rockwell made this pen! Still, the new lapis Pelikan 1935 is the best new Holiday pen in my opinion. In closing I will second what Scott said about the Hemingway: just becasue a pen (or car, watch, etc) increases in value does not mean it increases in aesthetic appeal, although money often has an unusual ability to aestheticize even the most banal objects. If we want to complain about pens lets move on to the MB Boheme! |
| FS Parker Duofold LE Magritte
|
| |
12/23/2001: Silviu |
|
FS mint, boxed (outer white cardboard and inner wood cupboard shaped
presentation box) with original papers.
The pen was issued in 1998 (300 pcs. to the Belgian market only, with
an original price of approx. 600$) to comemorate 100 years from the
birth of surealist painter Rene Magritte.
The pen comes with a signed certificate with number 077 (from 300 pens
in this edition).
The pen is a Duofold Centenial size Lapis Luzuli color. It has
Magritte signature on cap and features the flying dove symbol (that
appears in many of Magritte's paintings) on the captop (instead of the
Duofold symbol).
In addition, the presentation box includes a bronze paperweight in the
shape of a masked apple (inspired by Magrrite painting "The married
priest").

12/22/2001: Lih-Tah Wong |
|
Happy holiday greetings, Penlovers!
I am pleased to announce that I have updated my Parker 75 website with new material in the reference section. The highlights in this update includes:
- More special 75 packaging destined for the Italian market
- A better picture of the Atlas booster rocket 75 from the
Parker family archives
You will also find other interesting items such as Parker key chain with the grid pattern made famous by the 75, a wallet calendar, etc.
Also, as a holiday bonus, I have made arrangements with Andreas Lambrou to sell his book "Fountain Pens of the World" and the Classic Pens CP5 Duofold fountain pens at special prices. Mr. Lambrou is willing to autograph the book and place a personal dedication so it makes a wonderful holiday gift.
Please come take a look if you have a moment.
Enjoy the holiday season and my best wishes to you all for a new year full of good health, happiness, and lots of 75s!
Regards,

My vote is that its a lovely pen. If it were made from residual materials of other Duofolds I think that adds to its charm and ultimate value down the road.
Can anyone recommend a site that helps identify Sheaffer fountains made in the last ten years?I was given a nice corporate logoed black resin bodied fp with 18 k nib in traditional style. Any guesses what thee model was called? |

|
| |
12/21/2001: Doctor Nib |
|
I agree with Len Provisor, the Parker Duofold Mosaic is a work of art and is most certainly not made of scraps. I've sold thru almost every Mosaic pen in my shop and have had nothing but rave reviews on color, design and writing quality of this model. With several more days til Xmas, I will sell out of the Mosaic regardless of the "premium" price--the bottom line is that my customers love it!!Also, Esther is right, take this pen out in the sunlight or under a halogen light and watch it glisten as you rotate it in your hand. What we need are more pens that don't look like Montblancs! Parker has a long way to go to get back where it was before Gillete took over and almost killed it, and the Duofold Mosaic is a great start!
Happy Holidays from Doctor Nib in sunny Arizona!

Re the previous post...I gave my impression of the pen - it's ugly. Don't know what you mean about "best negative rhetoric". Re the Mosaic scraps...is it just coincidence that the bulk of the plastic pieces are from Duofolds that have been discontinued? The Hemingway was ugly when it was first released, and it's still ugly. It's just worth a lot more now. What's your point? |
| Parker Mosaic
|
| |
12/21/2001: Len Provisor |
|
You can give your impressions of a pen, but you really should reserve your best negative rhetoric for other things more deserving.
I was not impressed either when first seen in print, but was very impressed seeing it in real life.
I consider this a beautiful and well made pen. Remember what many said of the Hemingway when first released? Now we're choking on our words.
The Parker Mosaic materials are not made from left over scraps. |
| Parker Mosaic
|
| |
12/21/2001: Scott |

I've seen it, and it is as ugly in real life as in the pictures. Gotta give Parker credit though for charging a premium price for items made up of leftover scraps from discontinued Duofold colors. Kinda sad to see Parker reduced to releasing junk like this. Scott |
| About Mosaic
|
| |
12/21/2001: Esther |
|
A few words about the Parker Mosaic. Since this pen has been badmouthed before anybody has actually seen one, let me set the record straight. This is a beautiful pen! Yes, I know, it is a matter of personal taste. Well, I am willing to bet that this one is going to become a classic. The beautiful, yet simple mosaic pattern is stunning. Spin the pen next to a bright light, and you bring to life the hidden lights of that pattern. The pen comes in a nice big satin lined box, with a booklet which describes the history of "mosaic". Included is a silver polishing cloth, to keep the pen clean and shiny. Great product, great packaging. We should ask (demand from?) Parker to continue and surprise us this way. |
| 1946 Parker "51" airplane model
|
| |
12/21/2001: Len Provisor |
|
Special gift from Geoffrey S. Parker
Only 10 days left to place your order for this replica model of the 1946 Parker “51” Beechcraft D18S airplane.
This is the aircraft and it’s design that inspired Kenneth Parker to produce the first Parker “51” Flighter fountain pen, that was “airplane-ized” to be leak proof at high altitude.
This limited production model is produced only for this calendar year 2001.
No more orders will be taken after Dec. 31, 2001.
Visit my web site www.inkblotters.com to view vintage photos and actual model images of this professional quality hand made model.
Eighteen inch wingspan, made of solid wood construction and completely hand painted details.
Actual aircraft blueprints and Parker family photo archives used to guarantee authenticity of this model.
The first 100 models only are personally signed on the base by Geoffrey S. Parker, the great grandson of George S. Parker.
A few of the numbered models are still available
A personal gift will be enclosed with each model, an 8 ½” x 11” vintage photo reproduction of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Parker standing in front of this aircraft, taken in 1948 at the Janesville airport. Perfect for framing and display with your Parker “51” Beechcraft model.
This photo will be personally signed by Geoffrey S. Parker as a “Thank You” for your appreciation of the Parker Pen Company.
Very likely only 100 of these models will be produced for worldwide distribution, making this an extremely low production and valuable Parker ephemera collectible. As with last year’s model, the 1928 “Duofold” Fairchild FC2W2 model, after market value has substantially increased.
Visit www.inkblotters.com for the full story and order information.
Shipping safely worldwide. Unconditionally guaranteed.
$250. Plus $10. UPS anywhere in the U.S.A. Approx. $35. – 45. Worldwide USPS.

Hi everyone -- Up for sale is a rare, oversize, J.G. Rider eyedropper pen in red/black mottled hard rubber. This pen has a slip cap, with the distinctive Rider "piano wire" long over-the-top clip. Huge (looks like a No. 10 size) 14K Rider nib. No chips or cracks. Really great condition. Pen fills by pulling out the entire feed and nib, filling with an eyedropper, and replacing the feed/nib. A very high quality, uncommon pen. Reasonable offers. Thanks for looking. |

I have one good fountain pen, a sterling silver Sheaffer my husband gave me for Christmas about 15 years ago. It's beartiful and I use it every day, but now find it needs some servicing, because the nib is getting "scratchy." the problem is, I have to ship it cross country for servicing, and need to insure it, but have no idea as to its worth. I think it is a Sheaffer Targa - at least it seems to match the pictures of this pen I have found on the web. Any suggestions about what I should insure my beautiful pen for, when I do ship it?

Hello all -- I have for sale a rare striped Pilot Murex pen in fine point. For those not familiar with the Murex, it is one of the best writing pens around, with an integral nib.section like the Parker T-1. See the June, 2001 Stylophiles article on the Murex. The striped model is pictured on the cover. The model I have for sale has a very shallow ding near the top of the cap, to the right of the clip, but it is otherwise in great shape. Really a terrific pen and writer, not easily found. Comes with convertor. Reasonable offers. Thanks. |

Hey all,
Need to sell (if there's any interest) some pens (to pay for more pens ;-)). As everyone always says, first e-mail, yadda, yadda, etc.
1. Sheaffer's TD TM in gold fill with groups of parallel lines. This is not a solid gold pen; believe me, I looked for the 14k marks. It is, however in VG+ condition. The only flaw is a 1-2mm ding on the cap nearly directly behind the top of the clip. Nib is an ultra fine (accountant, needle nose, what-have-you) triumph in two-tone 14k. Filler works great. Writes well, but the
nib is not my cup o' tea. Have the box that it was in when I bought it, though probably not the original. I've seen a couple of these for approx. $150 with less rare nibs. I'd like $150 for this one and I'll pay shipping in US.
Some ring-tops which I bought when I started my collection:
2. Conklin Endura ring-top in "rosewood" HR. Color is outstanding; imprint on the faint, but readable, side. Mechanically it is very sound; fills and writes like a champ. Minor brassing on the GF trim; top has several small dings but the gold fill is intact. Pen is identical to two that are on David Nishimura's site ($135-140); his, though, are probably in a little better shape. $100 and I'll pay shipping in US.
3. Waterman 52 1/2V in RBHR. Woodgrain pattern. Good color. Some brassing on the lever and band. Feed is black (not red/black). Good imprint. Pen has been professionally restored and fills/writes very well. Nib has nice flex to it. Nice pen if
you're into this sort of thing. $45 PLUS s/h.
4. Mabie Todd "Swallow" in green jade. ABSOLUTELY no discoloration on this pen though there is some brassing to the cap band and lever. Very readable imprint. Correct MT & Co. #2 nib that has a good deal of flex. Needs a new sac to be useable. Pen is approx. 11.2cm long when capped. $35 PLUS s/h.
Please e-mail if you have any questions. Checks/MO are fine. I've paid for things with PayPal (but never sold and taken payment through them) so might be able to do that as well. S/H outside of US will be charged at the actual rate. Money back guarantee (less shipping) if not happy within 3 days of receipt. Thanks for your interest.

Just a reminder that I have about two dozen restored vintage pens listed for sale on my Web site (http://www.virtualcrate.com/pens/). | Eric's 1888 Parker?
|
| |
12/13/2001: Len Provisor |
|
Eric, the pen is not a Parker, but the box is.
The pen appears to be either a very early 1870-80's MacKinnon stylographic, an ink pen that writes somewhat like a modern drafting pen, or it could even be a very early 1890's A.T.CROSS.
Closer examination by a pen expert can determine the origin and approximate date. Let us know what city you reside in, I can refer you to someone local or you can send it to one of several trusted pen dealers we know. You have a real bargain here with this very early pen, given there are no defects.
If you are not interested in the Parker box, I would be a buyer for my own collection of Parker materials. |

Hello all!
As some of you know, I've been down (computer-wise, not particularly
emotionally ), for the better part of a week. This was as a result of a
computer virus that managed to slip past both my firewall and antivirus
software (which I update twice weekly), effectively destroying my main
computer. I'm operating from a laptop at the moment, as I continue to try
and rescue important information before wiping the hard drive and starting
over. This came at a good time of year . For those of you who follow
such, it was a stealth virus -- js.exception.exploit -- and we're (including
Norton Antivirus) not sure how my system became infected. I *believe* that I
eventually received all back-logged emails, but of course one can never know
that, so if you haven't received a response from me during the past week or
so, please re-send your email. I *do* know that I've lost some email
addresses from my address book.
As I write this, I have just one or two of each of the following pens, which
are particularly suited as holiday gifts (if not for someone else, then
certainly for yourself ), each coming in very attractive gift boxes.
First up is a pen set (fountain pen and ballpoint), that I carried years
ago, sold out of quickly, and have only recently been able to get a few more
of from Hong Kong -- the HERO '903' Flower:

| San Francisco Pen Show
|
| |
12/13/2001: Jim Griffiths |
|
Hello all,
This is a message for everyone who spoke with me regarding my interest
and efforts to create a San Francisco Pen Show next year.
I have decided to stop moving forward with doing my own show in July.
This is because I have spoken with Harvey Raider, and he assures me that
he and Detlef Bittner will make a show happen in October.
As most of you know, my only concern was to make sure that the Bay Area
has a show next year. Given the cost of producing a show in the Bay
Area, I do not feel that the region could support two shows
cost-effectively. Since Detlef and Harvey were the individuals who
committed to doing the SF show after the last one in Oakland (September
2000), I feel that it is only appropriate that I do not create an event
that could possible undermine their efforts.
I thank all of you who offered their support and best wishes. For those
of you who still wish to volunteer, please contact Harvey at
harvey@netpipe.com.
Best regards,

Dear Geraldine,
Here are some choices you can consider:
Aurora Style - Nice pens with a definite vintage, almost Parker 51 look. They look more expensive than they cost. Several choices in your price range.
Cross ATX - Cross quality and reliability. The section is a personal choice, being metal and polished. Large pen.
Lamy Safari / Al-Star - Great writer, light weight. You could buy two! The Al-Star is all metal - aluminum and very classy. The clip on this pen will work on flannel shirts and sweaters.
Waterman Phileas - Very smooth writer, lighter in weight. Nib is a bit stiff.
You can see all of these and order with confidence from the Fountain Pen Hospital in New York, NY. Very nice people.

12/12/2001: Waco Johnny D |

I have not followed the thread,
but "cushy" does not
necessarily mean "working right."
You still may have a punctured or
detached diaphragm. And if it's
not the
diaphragm then it's
probably a clogged
breather tube.
In case no one's
recommended this yet, get a copy
of "Da Book" by Frank Dubiel. Use
any search engine for more details.
Vac-fill pens are not at all difficult
to repair but if you're new to this
you might first want to practice on
(cheap) lever-fillers or junk Vacs
and 51 Vacs to get a feel for how to
use an alcohol lamp.

| Leaky Pelikan
|
| |
12/12/2001: James Smith |
|
I have a Pelikan M-600 that has developed a hair-line crack around the barrel, about 1/16 inch above where the barrel is joined to the nib section. Ink seeps out of the crack and into the cap screw threads, then transfers to my finger when I write. Does anyone know where I could get this fixed, and if it would be covered by the Pelikan warranty. The pen is about 3 years old. |
| Removal of Parker 51 filler units
|
| |
12/11/2001: Richard Rosen |
|
I'd like to thank those people who took the time to answer my inquiry regarding removal of a Parker 51 plastic filler unit. The advise saved me from possibly ruining several choice pens. I hadn't realized that the filler units were so tightly screwed in and it would take no less than a possible soaking and a good metal grip to remove.
I don't believe I'm going to make or buy a vac tool at this time in that I'm not certain that replacing the diaphragms would take care of the filling problem. And besides, I only have one or two Parker 51's that don't fill very well (one to four drops). In both I get a nice cushy up and down "plunge", so maybe there is some other problem with them not filling.
I look forward to my daily reading of this board, have contributed occasionally, and now, because of all the response I received from my request, I intend to make it a point to look for ways in which I can contribute more. Again, thanks to those who replied, and to those who keep this board alive.

Very likely the full compliment of the first 100 numbered models only will be sold, so you will know this is a very limited production and you can be one of the very few to have this great model. Well, I thought I would entertain you all with my misdemeanor today. I have this nice Sheaffer balance pen. I did get it on eBay and it is a nice pen. So today I went to clean it out as it had run out of ink and I was going to set it aside for awhile. I went to clean it out. Then I was shaking it to get all the water out. Now I am also hooked on baseball, having played as a youngster. I have always fancied my self a switch hitter. So I was shaking the pen with my left hand and I struck it against the sink. I bent the nib quite a bit and as I tried to straighten it out off popped one part of the iridium. I guess this is how Motishaw (sp?) gets a lot of business. Life goes on. My day was not nearly as bad as I suppose Bin Lauden's was............ |

Mr. Wong, I sincerely apologize if the remark I made was offensive to you or anyone else, it was not intended as such. It is not an American pen joke. There are a great many inexpensive ballpoint pens that are given away as advertising by companies that have jokes and riddles imprinted on the barrels, but I have not seen any with the imprint I mentioned. |

I've had several stickered NOS VS's and some have had the clear lucite and some had black feeds. My assumption is that they were made with both, perhaps later models were fitted with traditional black feeds as the model was being phased out. |

Hi. Picked up two well worn Parker VS- vacumatic successor pens. One has clear (lucite?) feed. Neat. Other has black feed. Vaguely recall hearing VS's did come with Lucite feed. Anyone know and incline to share info as to whether the Clear Feed is standard for this model (and thus the black a wrong feed) or are both correct? Were the different feed styles done at different times, or no particular correlation? Thanks kindly. David. |

Thanks to Stephen Lam for the referral, but I must note that we ourselves do not make or sell Vac wrenches. The ones we recommend are sold by the Fountain Pen Hospital in New York. They have a lever-action closure, so one has a great deal of sensitivity to how much pressure is being applied. Having used clamp-style tools previously, these are generally superior -- especially when dealing with those difficult all-plastic filler units. |

...for the cut and paste challenged, sorry I screwed up the note below.
I was saying.....collectors who, in spite of really having another life, and maybe even a day job, on occassion need to gather to share, show off, or just compare pens and information. The Chicago Pen Club was born just a few months ago and we already have 34 pen folk on the mailing list, with 10-12 who regulrly show up for their dose of pen fix. It's a great opportunity for those who are very knowledgeable in a given area to share with others. At this last meeting hosted by Don Lavin in his offices, we had a nice gathering. Dan Zazove brought into rare daylight some of his exceptional "51" collection, and each had a unique story. Many were unusual examples and one in particular I found interesting, with a Chinese lettered inscription. Dan had it translated sometime ago, it was just a congratulatory inscription. I thought that perhaps it said something clever like "No starch please". Ernesto Soler, the new kid on our block, having recently moved from NJ and pretty savvy about "51"s was wide-eyed like a kid in a candy shop looking over Dans portfolios of ads. Studying these ads are a great opportunity, often revealing a story about product development by what you see, and also what you do not see. Herb Schulz is our resident Pelikan expert, and has provided me with invaluable information for another project I am currently developing. Don Lavin, our area elder statesman of pendom, pontificated about the "old days" where he would find boxes and bowls full of pens for a few dollars, and also discussed the cautions we must have dealing over the internet. A few recent offerings were examples of often what is not said is more important and revealing than what is shown. Don has a terrific desk base collection, and we were totally impressed. Roger Wooten traveled all the way from Rockford, about 75 miles, and brought his minty Sheaffer Balance and Flat top collection. As for me, I showed off a new Parker desk pen base and incredible figural in black cast metal featuring a 9" tall "Lady Victory" with giant quill in one hand, the other with a peace laurel. The accompanying pen is a minty black chased Duofold Sr. Mark Grimmenga recently found a quantity of mint in the box early Quink ink, which were sold immediately for our ink collections. Sandy Andina could not make it, she had an unfortunate altercation with a chicken. Sandy 1, chicken 0..and in the pot. Several other members who could not make it said they would, one from as far as Notre Dame, Indiana. So, friends, if you have an inkling to form a local pen club, I can't think of a better idea, especially if it is difficult to get to those pen shows. I feel we all walked away from this meeting with considerable more knowledge and we had a wonderful time. To form your own local club, all you have to do is simply mention "Pen Club" to one other person, and they will come. |

this may be obscure. has anyone thought of a good solution for carrying extra ink (about two refills) while traveling, intended to fill an eyedropper pen? i've tried various solutions, and have found nothing completely satisfactory. currently i use a koh-i-noor bottle, but this holds more ink than i need, and i don't like using a plastic bottle. ideally i would like a miniature eyedropper bottle, but various trips to chemistry shops have been fruitless. i've also considered modifying a piston filler pen. any suggestions would be great. |

If you don't want to make one yourself, there are many vintage pen dealers offering such a tool. Names that come to mind include Nishimura, Pen Sac Company. Follow the pen resource link in Nishimura's homepage and you will find more. I bought a few from John Mason of Brisbane and they were well made too. Anyway, a vac tool is a must for collectors who want to repair vacs themselves. |

This is for Richard and anyone who wants a tool for removing the filler unit for a Vac. You can't do the job right without a tool. I've tried. Being handy with tools, I made my own. To take a look at my two home-made tools, go to: My apologies in advance for the size - I just scanned them and put them up. (no ffancy editing) I made the one on the left, the right one was made by my friend Bob McAfee. Both are made from a piece of scrap aluminum, both work quite well! The pieces are about 1" X 1.5" X 5/8" The slit/break makes it possible for you to clamp and tighten down the tool on the filler unit. Drill and tap the hole to hold the filler. Drill the holes through the side for your clamping bolt. On mine, the half with the wing nut is a clearance hole, the other is tapped for a 1/4-20 bolt. The small hole at the far end is to let the block flex. Bob split his block completely, having tapped the opposite corners of his block with clearance holes one half for the bolts, which have knobs attached. After drilling and tapping, cut your slit. IIRC the standard vac thread size is 5/16, oversize is 3/8, both of them 36 threads per inch. You may need to order the tap. Check the phone book for a machine tool supplier. |

Fellow Collectors,
I'm still finding 10 - 20 new sites every time I do searches, so here is the latest update. BTW: I keep the NEW label for two weeks per site. Please keep the questions coming and I'll add them to the FAQ.
Questions to the group:
1. One Big Page or Not: Looks like the 500 links barrier will turn up in the next week or two. As a result, I may have to break the list into several pages. Would love your comments on this: Should I keep it all as one page or create separate pages for each major subject?
2. Office Supply Dealers: I've tried to filter out general office supply companies from the list, but have gotten a few questions about this. Should I add them, and should I add them under the category "Office Supply Dealers"?
The URL for PenBookmarks is:

Unless the filler is quite loose the plastic being a soft material will never be able to grip the threads with enough strength to turn them. It might work in one out of ten pens. But 90% odds are the cap will shatter and you will end up with heavy deep and ugly plier marks on the filler. Get the tool. |
| A tool for removing a Parker 51 filler unit
|
| |
12/8/2001: Richard Rosen |
|
I would like to replace the diaphram on a Parker 51. I do not have any tool for removing the filler unit. I was considering cutting a slot in a spare blind cap and then using this blind cap with a pair of pliers to get a grip on and remove the filler unit. Does this sound like a workable plan? I have Dubiel's book on repairs but he makes no mention of that other than using a "vac wrench". I would certainly appreciate comments. |

Indeed. Jon does provide quite a service to our hobby by making nice vintage catalogs available. Nicer still if he can generate some revenue while doing so. That is the wonderful thing about our somewhat capitalistic society- personal benefit and societal advancement can go hand in hand. Certainly better than waiting in line 6 hours for one overripe chicken, as characterized certain other economic systems not too long ago. Vintage catalogs of this sort routinely sell in the $150-250 range on ebay. I find a nice copy of a complete parkergrams and catalog for $40 to be quite the bargain. Certainly the info contained has enhanced considerably my knowledge of the Parker Vac series and provided fodder for my own feeble attempt to collate knowledge into a vac pamphlet. My own collection is far better for the knowledge gained from Jon's prior copying efforts. So, here is a big public thanks to Jon and to his "source" for these catalogs. May you make big bucks, grow your collection nicely, and keep helping the rest of us learn about vintage pens. Fondest regards. David Isaacson |

| NEW REPRODUCTION OF VINTAGE PARKER CATALOGUE 1936!!
|
| |
12/6/2001: Jon Rosenbaum |
|
Great news for all Parker Pen Collectors, especially Vacumatic fanatics! After much arm twisting, begging and pleading my source has agreed to allow me to reproduce another wonderful vintage pen catalogue in full, glorious color! This is the 1936 Parker Catalogue and Parkergram, the magazine for dealers. This is the September 1936 edition. It includes eight detailed pages of Vacumatics, including the Senior pen with thin-thick-thin cap bands (first appearance of the streamlined cap and body), Golden Web (called the Brown Pearl Jr.), etc., etc. Also included is the complete Deluxe and standard Challenger line, as well as the full Parkette line. There is material on displays, a piece written by George Parker, details as to dealer support and a very interesting comparison of Parker advertising expenditures to the other brands. There is extensive coverage of the incredible deco pen stands with lamps, etc. This is great historical material, sure to be enjoyed by the Parker collector. Those of you who were fortunate enough to obtain the now out of print limited edition of the "Vacumatic Compendium," received just 8 pages of material from this catalogue. The whole catalogue runs 33 pages plus color covers! So there is much here that hasn't been reproduced in color before. The catalogue's cost is $38 plus $2.50 for postage and a heavily padded envelope. The supply will be limited, so order yours today. Pictures of the cover and a sample page may be found at http://www.members.aol.com/jonr529/pk36cat1.jpg and pk36cat2.jpg. Just email me for instructions on ordering. Thanks for your support1 Jon Rosenbaum |

Haywood, you are exactly right, every item on eBay has to be scrutinized carefully. Eventually you will learn of those dealers who are well known in the pen collecting community that have a reputation you can trust and deal with in good faith. The final answer to finding the kind of pens you are looking for will be at any one of the many national or local pen shows held all over the country. One day at a pen show will allow you to hold, inspect, and get all your answers to your full satisfaction. Check the Pen Show link on the Home Page, make it a point to try and visit one of them that is convenient, you have a whole community of pen friends just waiting to meet you. |

This is from "sw12dz"'s "Me" on eBay ...
Hello fellow fountain pen collectors, fanatics and all of you out there with inked stained hands. I've been absorbed with this fascinating hobby for the past year, and although I don't presume to know everything, I have learned quite a bit. Please allow me to share some of my knowledge with you. By carefully studying Ebay ads for the past several months, I have come up with the following definitions for various fountain pen descriptions. “purchased at an estate sale” = bought this at a flea market/garage sale for $1 “pen looks like it was never used” = and cows can fly “just needs new sac” = this pen will never write “I don’t know much about pens” = looking for a sucker to buy this pen “I don’t have any way to fill this, so I don’t know if it works” = this pen will need a miracle in order to work “looks to be in good condition” = has a cracked barrel “just needs a good cleaning” = needs a complete restoration “filling mechanism seems to work” = ink goes in one end and runs out the other “all of our pens are sold “as is” = let the buyer beware “minimal surface wear” = scratched to hell “cap has minor dent” = looks like it was run over by a truck “nib seems to be okay” = broken or bent “will make a nice addition to a collection” = if you collect junk “I don’t see any dings, dents or scratches” = I am legally blind “looks to be complete” = from a distance “I didn’t try filling the pen” = didn’t want to waste my time |

12/6/2001: Agda |

Hi,
When I was 15, I got my first Montblanc pen (Meisterstück 252 with oblique nib) from my father.
15 years ago I bought my second Montblanc pen (Meisterstück 4810)
6 year ago I inherited my father's Montblanc pen (Meisterstück 14) and
this year I got my mother's Montblanc ballpoint pen (grey model 215)...
As you may notice I have a special bond with this brand.
These pens are very dear to me and I wouldn't dream of selling them, but I'm curious to know whether these pens are common on the "market" and it would be nice to know what value they would have to a collector.
Could anyone give me some more information ? |

Hugo, I tried to e-mail directly to you but was unsuccessful.
This high quality replica model airplane is carved from a solid piece of hardwood and hand painted. The guarantee would assure a customer that it will keep looking as good as new, as long as it is not placed in direct sunlight, dropped on the floor, or a pet dog or cat decides to chew on the wing like a bone.
So far, only 100 of these current Beechcraft models have been made. The balance I have left are selling quickly to many Parker employees and dealers. If I have less than 100 orders by end of this year, I will not make any more. One hundred of anything is extremely limited production, increasing in value very soon. If you have an inkling for this model, order yours today before it is too late. |

On my pewter Starship Enterprise free-standing model, the port warp nacelle suffered a tragic fate resulting in it actually falling off. thankfully no radiation poisoning ensued. this occurred after the much shorter guarantee had run out. New enterprise- $190. Sob. I did manage to have the model repaired for less than cost of new Starship. Even the best constructed items can have unexpected problems. If someone offers a stunning three year guarentee, 'specially on a really neat piece of retro pen ephemera, he should indeed receive our praises. I've seen these planes in Bert Heiserman's shop and at Len's table at penshows. They are most impressive. Now if only he could make the Vacmobile. Best. David

http://cgi2.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=rsedan
(ebay username is rsedan). Feel free to email with questions. I will be happy to email scans of the pens to serious inquiries. Thanks! Ricardo Sedan at sedan@alum.mit.edu

| Update on the Michigan Pen Show on Dec 6-9 at the Southfield Westin Hotel
|
| |

|
Greetings Penlovers!
Just a quick reminder that the Michigan Pen Show will be held this weekend, Dec 6th-9th, at the Southfield Westin Hotel. We're down to the wire now and many dealers start arriving tomorrow.
I have some great and exciting news. The Conklin Pen Company, our show's sponsor, has just upped the ante on the 2 pens that will be raffled off on Saturday and Sunday. Instead of the 2 pens being the Nozac Word Gauge limited edition (out of 898 for each color) with SRP $750, Conklin will change that and donate 2 Crescent Filler limited edition (out of 388) with SRP $1200! Wow!! There will be two very lucky winners at this show; come to our show and get your chance at these rare gems. Thank you Conklin Pen Company!
Don't forget also that our show also has a very worth and charitable organization -- The Children's Miracle Network. Many kind collectors have donated items for the Saturday auction (starts at 4:30pm) whose sale will go to CMN. Plus the club itself is donating a portion of the net proceeds.
Here's a list of the nationally recognized names in the pen world who have tables:
- Sam and Frank Fiorella of Pendemonium
- Jimmy Dolive of Total Office Products
- Bill Weakley of Power Pens
- Lou and Howard Kaplan of Great Parker
- Dan Reppert
- Susan Wirth, self-proclaimed Queen of Inks
- Frank Dubiel, author of Da Book
- Andreas Lambrou of Classic Pens
and many others.
Leave the Internet pen shopping behind for a little while. Come mingle with experts and other collectors to share information and gain insight, especially in seeing interesting pens up close and personal. Best of all, get a shot at some very expensive door prizes!
The show is open to the public on both Saturday and Sunday. General admission is $6 each day, two-day admission is $8. Weekend trader with early admission is $40, not the $35 that I erroneously wrote in the post of Nov 24th.
For more information, please visit www.michpens.com.

THANKS. IT'S JUST AN INK PEN BUT I KNOW THERE'S A BETTER TERM. |

Hugo, the engines of this model do not function. The entire model is carved from solid wood, the propellers are mounted into the engine on pins, if you push on the propeller, they will spin.
Model comes with an unconditional one year guarantee. |

| Leaking PFM
|
| |
12/3/2001: Peter Ford |
|
There are a number of possibilities to this problem, the most likely is an ailing point gasket. Where the gasket is less than perfect, improper placing of the whole nib rather than just the snorkel tube in the ink, causes ink to be drawn into the body as well as the sac. It would not be particularly efficient at this, hence only small amounts are drawn in. When sitting in the shirt (blotting paper) pocket, the offending hole is then at the bottom of the false reservoir........... On the other hand, if the sac were leaking, it would vent itself completly. |

I have a PFM V that was recently restored. I've noticed that there is a pinhole at the bottom of the barrel (but above the part of the pen that twists to advance the snorkel)that leeches ink- but only when the hole is touching material ie.. my shirt pocket. When I stand the pen up on my desk, for days, no ink comes out. Only in my pocket. Any suggestions? |

I have a Parker vacumatic that I would like to sell. It is in good shape, with no cracks anywhere on it. It does have a few chips on the end that covers the plunger and the clip has been broken. If you are interested, please e-mail me and we'll work out something. This pen is really in good shape, but I'm being honest about the flaws. |

| Parker Flighter
|
| |
12/3/2001: Jerry Adair |
|
Never have been much of a fasn of Parkers. They are not very forgiving to us left handers. But, I found at a garage sale a couple of years ago a 51 Flighter in pretty good shap. It was being sold by an old lady who only wrote on Sundays. Seriously, the pen was being sold by a woman in her late 70s I would guess. Nothing strange here except the clip was a Blue Diamond not the Arrow. I asked her after I had made the purchase if she recalls ever breaking the pen and sending it or taking it in for repair. She could not remember the pen ever being repaired. In 1946 Parker discontinued the Blue Diamond clip and if memory serves me the Flighter is a vintage 1948 w/Arrow clip.
Is this a mystery? Hs anyone ever seen this? I sold the pen in Columbus for around $200 in 1999.
I don't care about the price it just seems strange to me . Any Parkerophiles out there (including the world famous Mike Fultz) who might have an answer.
P.S. Mike I still use the 452 I traded you for in Boston.

Dean and Bill, another incredible issue of Stylophiles. Magnificent photography and all the stories and articles have riveting content covering both modern and vintage, something for everyone. This is the best FREE pen magazine I ever get.
One note on the Parker 51's. The hammered gold cap, hammered over a fishscale is really a 14K solid gold. One would wonder why the heck anyone would do that to a magnificent fishscale cap. The answer is it was damaged, and there is no way a fishscale pattern can be repaired without tell-tale marks. So, the hammer fell to totally cover the prior damage. It is now a very nice daily user without fear of dents or scratches. Thanks again for a super Dec. Stylophiles. |

Well folks, I’m bleary eyed from coding, but the December update to Stylophiles is now online and, if I must say so myself, it’s a great update. Three, no four articles on the Parker 51, the new Conway Stewart Dandy, another Sheaffer Comparison, the Mark Twain just released by Conklin Pen Company, Delta’s Fellini, a terrific Vintage column on another neat but hard to find Parker pen, another new feature that I’ll let you find, and the Columbus Show Review. I’ve probably left something out so you’ll have to go check it out. Just click on Stylophiles to the left or on Penlovers homepage and you’ll be there. We’ve put lots of time and effort into this issue so we hope you enjoy. Dean |

Hello all,
Roger asked me to send a message to the list regarding his email account. Both Roger and I get our Internet access through the @Home cable Internet service. As of this morning, @Home has terminated their service in our area due to their bankruptcy proceedings. Supposedly, AT&T is getting us back online with their broadband service sometime "in the next 7 to 10 days."
Yada, yada yada...
Unfortunately, Roger does not currently have alternative Internet access other than AOL. In addition, his email "penopoly1@home.com" is dead until further notice.
If you need to reach Roger regarding pen repairs or sales, please either (best choice) call him at 877.234.6683 or (alternative choice) email him at penopoly1@aol.com.
For the moment, the Penopoly website is still up. But since it is being hosted by a subsidiary of @Home, that status is tentative.
Best regards,
Jim Griffiths

| Meisterstuck
|
| |
12/1/2001: Bill R. |
|
Actually, as far as I know, the MB pens from the 50s would be somewhat more likely to have the Meisterstuck marking than Masterpiece, as the latter engraving was used for only a short while. I had the impression it was only during the late 40s and very early 50s, but I might be wrong. In addition, during the time when it was used, I believe it was not necessarily used on all the pens produced.
