December 2000

Last update of the Parker 75 site for Y2000 is now online
      12/31/2000:  Lih-Tah Wong
Seasons Greetings to all of you Penlovers!

I am very happy to tell you that the final Y2000 installment of my Parker 75 website is now online.

You could say that I have saved the best for last! I thought the previous installment was my month for prototypes; let's just say that it pales in comparison to what I just added.

Among what's new for this update are:

- two prototype Keepsakes;
- two titanium prototypes;
- three Flighter prototypes;
- and many others!!

The most interesting addition is a concept design model for a retractable 75. While it is incomplete, it does offer us a glimpse into what Parker was looking at. Perhaps it was in reaction to the Namiki Vanishing Point?

Please come by and visit when you have some time.

Best wishes for a Happy & Healthy New Year! May you receive both in abundance to last the new millennium.

Regards,
Lih-Tah

Pens--(and please DON'T put my name in contention for the Lambrou book, as I already have a copy): 1) Best Vintage of any Year--the Sheaffer Balance and all its derivatives--look at any streamlined/tapered pen today and you'll see where its heritage came from. 2) Best Modern introduced in 2000 under $100--Cross ATX, with the Rotring Initial an Honorable Mention. 3. Best Modern >$100 introduced in 2000--Sheaffer Legacy II. 4. Best LE introduced in 2000--Omas Titanium. 5. Worst pen of 2000--Montblanc Boheme; sorry, I think there's something goofy about retractable nib CARTRIDGE pens, and the jewel set in the clip looks tacky. BEST INK BRAND--overall, my vote goes to Waterman. It has the best BALANCE of flow, color density, friendliness to both vintage and modern pens, and fairly easy availability while not being outrageously priced. Let's hope Gresham's Law of Capitalism doesn't apply to screw up what Waterman has now....

Large ink bottles?
      12/31/2000:  einv
Is there any place where one could obtain a healthy supply (maybe not a gallon, but a liter? or quart) of black or blue-black ink? I am thinking "economy" but of course I'd hate to be stuck with a large bottle of bad ink. So maybe the idea is not a good one.. still, it is a question!

I keep reaching for Private Reserve Plum. It looks beautiful on ivory paper.

Ink of the Year

Aurora black. The best, sexiest black ink. It is smooth, and every pen loves it. It makes scratchy pens smooth! Cures diaper rash....sorry. It is my favorite.

Tanzanite INK
      12/31/2000:  Doctor Nib
Will-- Tanzanite ink is a beautiful deep purple color that is free flowing in any fountain pen I've tried it in. Tanzanite is a semi-precious gem that comes out of Tanzania (sur- prise, surprise!). You can check on Private Reserve's website at: http://www.privatereserveink.com HAPPY NEW YEAR! Doctor NIb

Ink of the year
      12/31/2000:  Reuben
It has to be Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue, followed closely by Aurora Blue and Levenger Cobalt Blue. (OK, I like Blue ink!) Waterman is so thin that it bleeds through many papers.

Private Reserve Ink
      12/31/2000:  Will Thorpe
OK, what is Private Reserve Tanzanite Ink? Is Tanzanite a color?

Ink
      12/31/2000:  Will Thorpe
I have to agree on the Watermans. My three best performing inks are Watermans Florida Blue, Watermans Havana Brown (love the smell) and Pelikan Brown.

Ink Of The Year
      12/31/2000:  Doctor Nib
I have to agree with Richard that Private Reserve Tanzanite ink is a fantastic choice! Velvet Black and Lake Placid Blue would come in a close second. Kudos to Susan at Private Reserve! HAPPY NEW YEAR! Doctor Nib.

BEST INK
      12/31/2000:  Mike
My vote for best ink goes to Waterman Florida Bleu. Their other colors are great as well especially the Caesar red and document brown. An ink made in France can't be all bad after all they make some of the best wines in the world!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Who will be first one the bulletin board in 2001?

Yard-O-Led
      12/31/2000:  Vicki
Happy New Year, All. Would someone please give me a review of Yard-O-Led's Viceroy or Grand Viceroy, specifically the F or EF point. I love the look of them, but don't really don't much about how they write, their balance, etc. Thanks in advance. Vicki

Best Cheapie of the Year - Parker Reflex
      12/31/2000:  Jim Mamoulides
Picked up a blue Parker Reflex at the druggist a few weeks ago and am very pleased with it. Where has this pen been hiding? Writes very well, smoothly and is a great all around knockaround pen. For US $7, not bad. The best part was when I fitted a converter from one of my Sonnets into it. A perfect fit. Now I have a cheapie that drinks! Cheers, Jim Mamoulides

Waterman Florida Blue. Hands down, my favourite. Works well in every pen I own.

Favorite ink of the year

Since we are doing "Pen Of The Year", We should do "Ink Of The Year", after all, they do go together. I use Sheaffers Scrip, two types. #332 Jet Black from a 32 Oz. bottle probably from the 1950's, and a new 2Oz bottle of blue. I use them in all my pens modern and vintage.

Hi, I'm selling off my entire collection of about 240 pens, most of which are modern or limited editions. Please email me if you're looking for anything, I've pens from almost every brand. Why this insanity? Well, I'm a student and can no longer afford to keep such a huge number of pens. Happy New Year! Regards, JiaXian

Ink!
      12/31/2000:  Neal Laver
I read Jim Mamoulides message (12/30/00 - "Perfect right out of the box")and have to agree with him. My own experience confirms that more often than not, the more expensive the pen, then the more fussy it is about the ink it likes! Without any doubt at all, the ink that suits all fountain pens best is that made by Waterman. You can put it in any pen and it flows well giving optimum performance all of the time - it has a far thinner viscosity compared to many other brands. I have to laugh when you pay a fortune for something like a new Montblanc only to find that it writes far better with a cheaper brand of ink! Don't believe all the hogwash about using the manufacturers recommended brand of ink - Watermans will out perform them all! Go try it yourself and feel the difference.

Old Sheaffer
      12/30/2000:  Tippi
Knowing my budding interest in fountain pens, my grandmother recently gave me what looks to be a Sheaffer Lifetime Balance in "won't win a beauty contest" condition. I don't know what year it is, but it was the solid gold/gold tone tip. I don't know much about this pen or this line of pens, but I'd like to get it fixed up for sentimental reasons. Can someone point me to a reputable repair person who might be able to take a look at the pen for me and let me know what fixing it might entail?

Aurora Mare
      12/30/2000:  Reuben
Yesterday, I receive a three piece set (FP, BP, Pencil) from the Fountain Pen Hospital, and they are all they appear to be in the pictures. The colors must be seen as the pictures don't do them justice. The engraving is magnificent---typical Italian workmanship. All three pieces are light and well balanced. I inked the Fountain Pen and it is a dream. I got the fine point and it is a true fine, laying a crisp, sharp, consistent line when using Pelikan Royal Blue ink---no skips---four different papers. I suppose the thing that strikes me most about the pen (I'm a Duofold Centennial and Pelikan M800 nut) is its lightness. It is hard to believe that a Pen that is so light can be so well balanced. Sorry for the Ad, but wanted to share the impression of this superb piece of design and artwork.

Perfect right out of the box
      12/30/2000:  Jim Mamoulides
I've been reading through the messages about ink flow and modern pens and have a few observations from my own collection of moderns. First, the really cheap pens I have, such as the Parker Reflex and Vector, Platinum Preppies and Fantasias, Sheaffer Cartridges, etc. - they all wrote the first time ink was put to paper and have never balked, fussed, skipped on me, ever. This leads me to believe that making working pens is not rocket science. All the fuss over dipping and testing does not explain to me why the cheapies seem to work well with no testing at all. Second, on higher line pens, I've also had very few cases where the pen was fussy out of the box. In most cases, the more free-flowing the ink, the fewer the problems. The worst offender I had is my Sheaffer Balance LE that simply hated Pelikan ink and balked and skipped like mad. Filled with Waterman Florida Blue, a much more free flowing ink, it starts and writes wonderfully. I had similar problems with a Duofold LE that the Florida Blue also solved. On a more interesting note, I've noticed that some pens seem to store ink better than others. I use Waterman Florida Blue, Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue, and Sheaffer Skrip Blue / Black as my primary inks and have noticed that some pens even after lengthy storage, keep the ink well, with the original colour, whilst others see the stored ink separate or blacken. My Lamy Al-Star, Montblanc Classic (the old 80s brass tube pen), Cross Townsend Medalist, and Sheaffer Award all seem to keep ink in true colour, whilst all my other Sheaffers, vintage and modern, Parkers, et al, tend to blacken. This obviates the need to keep most of my pens not in circulation cleaned and empty. Cheers, Jim Mamoulides

I picked up a Duofold Junior, Red, Single Band, 1928-1929 in an antique store for $22.00. The feed is not original (more on that in a later post). I also believe the nib is not original. The nib is marked: Parker Duofold Pen Z I've seen references to Parker N nibs but this is markd with a Z unless of course you look at it from the side and then it's an N! The nib has on the butt end a small triangle tab that sticks out. It writes like a broad or a signature nib. Any comments on the nib?

I'm somewhat reluctant to join in, as I've only been collecting for about four months. With that caveat: 1. Parker 51; 2. Waterman Phileas (the pen that started it all for me); 3. Pelikan M600; 4. none--I'm trying to stay away from limited editions; 5. Pelikan Level 5 (not an awful pen, but needlessly complicated and not a great writer; certainly not worth more than the $25 I paid for it in Pelikan-SRW's clearance sale).

Pen Of The Year Update
      12/29/2000:  Dean Tweeddale
Just three more days to get your vote in for Penlovers Pen(s) of the year. Remember everyone who votes will be entered in a drawing for a copy of Lambrou’s new book, “Fountains Pens, US and UK” that has been donated by Sam of Pendemonium.
The four categories are:

1 - Vintage pen of the year, any vintage pen counts here, the model and manufacturer with the most votes wins.

2 - New pen under $100.00, an important category to many of us, an affordable pen that writes for a daily user.

3 - New pen over $100.00, not a limited edition though.

4 - New Limited Edition any price, however must have been released in the year 2000.

5 - Oh and maybe one other category how about worst pen of the year.

In the Vintage race Parker 51's have a significant lead so far with Parker vac's and Parker Duofold's tied as runner up. Interesting that almost 75% of the votes in Vintage are for Parker pens. The new pen under $100 is a little tighter race with first place right now going to Namiki's Vanishing Point but only two votes back is Watermans Phileas and the Expert II just three votes back from that. The New pen over $100 is another tight race with a suprise at least to me, the Modern Parker Duofold Centennial and Sheaffer Intrigue are tied for first with five other pens in close second. Limited editions, the Aurora Mare leads with the Omas Lucens, MB Schiller, Stipla Iris, and Omas T2 tied for close second. In the worst pen category the leader/looser is the Modern MB especially the 144. All this can change over the next three days so get your votes in and you'll have a chance at winning the book. I'll do my best to post the results on January 1st. Dean

Re: Mike: Levenger Pen Case
      12/28/2000:  Richard
Mike, you've misunderstood my post. Cotton and tape will work, sure--until the tape gums up the finish on the wood, or the adhesive breaks down and lets go, or... Follow the link I gave (http://members.bellatlantic.net/~rbbinder/NorthernWoods/boosters.html) to see a product specifally designed to deal with the problem of long slots and short pens.

Pen of the Year
      12/28/2000:  Will Thorpe
  1. Vintage Pen: Eversharp 1939 Coronet. 2. New pen under $100: Waterman Phileas. 3. New pen over $100: Aurora Mare. 4. New LE: Krone HMS Victory. 5. Worst pen: That Iris thing. I would have voted for the Esterbrook J series (J, SJ, LJ) pen as best vintage pen because the plastic doesn't shrink, the trim is hardly ever brasses, the colors are vibrant, the nibs are easy to replace, the sacs are also easy to replace, the bars were good and are easy to replace, produced in US, Canada, England, Mexico, Brazil. However Esterbrooks don't seem to get mentioned in these great books (except Franks repair book and Paul Hobans book on Esterbrooks)!

Levenger Pen Case
      12/28/2000:  Mike
RICHARD: I went to Levenger to see your shopkeeper's pen case. It looks very attractive. May I advise you to pull out the tray and put cotton in the bottome section with a piece of tape across. This will hold your shorter pens from slipping down. Of course I realize this isn't exactly what you would expect from a case but it looks very handsome on your desk, I am sure.

PEN OF THE YEAR
      12/28/2000:  B. L. COLE
I choose the Parker 51 Vacuumatic, the 51 Aerometric, and the Parker 61--These three pens are my favorite pens that I own and not necessarily in this sequence.

The Levenger Shopkeeper's Pen Case is great!
      12/28/2000:  Richard
But the slots are too long. Or else your pens are too short. If you’re like me, you were really excited when your Levenger Shopkeeper’s Pen Case arrived, only to find yourself a little disappointed as you watched your pens, especially those 4” ringtops, slide right down out of view. You shouldn't have to take the trays out to enjoy your pens! And now you don’t have to. Check out Northern Woods Pen Boosters at http://members.bellatlantic.net/~rbbinder/NorthernWoods/boosters.html

I am looking for supplier of plastic bottles used by Rotring for their bottled inks. I have only been able to find them in a gift pack of 10 bottles, and want to purchase the bottles empty, if possible. I am absolutely in love with the bottle. Its plastic, can fill the converter without mess so can fill your pen anywhere you are. Please let me know if anyone knows how to find these bottles. I have been searching all over. Thanks.

Pen Of The Year Vote
      12/27/2000:  Dot Younginer
Pen of the year: 1)Vintage: my personal favorite, a desk Duofold in the orange color..I've used it for several years and it just gets better! 2) Best new pen under $100 - no contest, the Rotring Initial. 3) Best new pen over $100 - again, no contest...the Waterman Edson 4)No vote 5) Worst pen - I'll have to go along with the general opinion, the Mont Blanc (any and all...). Thanks for the chance to give my opinion!

Oops, new vote for pen of the year.
      12/27/2000:  David Kaplan
Sorry Dean, I didn't pay attention to the criteria 1 - Vintage pen of the year: Vac Oversize two-toned nib. 2 - New pen under $100.00. Namiki Vanishing Point. (Actually I have the old style that cost less than 100.00 at the time). 3 - New pen over $100.00. Aurora Talentum and OMAS Paragon 4 - New Limited Edition. I don't own any. I would rather spend my money on a vintage pen. 5 - Oh and maybe one other category how about worst pen of the year. Any modern pen other than those that I mentioned above. They just don't make 'em like they used to.

Pen of the Year
      12/27/2000:  David Kaplan
For me it's 1. Vac Oversize two-toned Mottishawed nib. Wet writer between fine and medium 2. Mabie Todd Swan #44 Eternal. 3. Waterman #7 red band. None of my moderns qualify with the possible exception of my OMAS Paragon.

Patents

I have been into vintage pens for about 3-4 months now, so the first question is very hard.I second most of the choices already given, and i just inked up a PFM II, what a great pen! My choices: Vintage - Big Red New under $100 - I have not bought any this year - so new to me Parker 51 with gold fill clip on chrome New over $100 -only pen i bought was the MB Noir et noir - 2nd choice PFM II (though i paid considerably less) LE- hard to say only really pay attention to MB , so its Schiller, I would have bought if it wasn't for this darn vintage bug Worst - are you kidding - every pen is a joy

  1) Sheaffer PFM IV (nice size and it has a snorkel) 2) Aurora Idea (Neon, cheap and realiable) 3) Sheaffer Intrigue in whale shark pattern (just barely over $100) 4) Zoss LE by Bexley 5) MB 144 (small, fragile and pricey)

2001 Project Suggestion
      12/25/2000:  Dave Glass
Mike- I think your idea to inventory patent dates on pens is interesting. I don't know how you propose to go about the inventory, but you may want to start with the Patent Gazette, which lists all patents issued in patent date order, and contains indices crossreferenced by patent title and inventor name. I have been researching Conklin patents and have gone through many of the Gazettes beginning around 1891. My search is incomplete, but so far I have found 16 patents related to Conklin. I saw many more associated with Waterman, Parker, Sheaffer, etc. as I was scanned the lists. If collectors are interested in pursuing this project, it might be useful to divide the task year by year rather than by maunfacturers to avoid needlessly repetitive trips through each patent resource. Lets see if there are enough people interested to warrant a joint project. Cheers, Dave Glass

2001 project suggestion
      12/25/2000:  mike rosen
I propose that antique writing collectors index the patent dates often found on writing instruments. I often will come across a pen with a patent date on the cap, or a pencil that is otherwise unmarked except for the patent date. This would be a useful tool to all collectors. It would assist in identification. Have a good year and happy hunting!

51 breather tubes
      12/25/2000:  David Nishimura
Vac-filling 51s used plastic breather tubes. Aerometric 51s used long metal tubes -- the material was sterling silver. If you have to put in a replacement, I'd opine that plastic would be superior to brass. I'd be concerned about corrosion with the brass, and the K&S tubing is both larger in diameter than the original tubes and much stiffer, and thus more likely to cause some interference with the action of squeezing the sac.

Vintage: MB 149 first or second year, prior to the whole injection moulded buisiness. Or the 139L, I think I got mine within the last year. Modern under $100: Namiki VP, old style. Never thought I would like 'em, but won an old style in matte black, and it's ended up in my pocket just about every day since! Modern over $100: A tough call..... The new Conklins are very nice indeed, if you like BIG celluloid pens. On the other hand, the new Stipula Duetto is certainly nothing at which to sneeze. I suppose my vote has to go to the Montegrappa Cosmopolitan Baroque Pattern I bought from Mary at the LA show. And I swear the salesperson had nothing to do with it's place as modern pen of the year..... LE: Stipula Iris? Conklin? OMAS Titanium? OMAS Lucens? Aurora Jumbuleaum? Krone Apollo 11? OK, Just kidding on the Krone! For the rest, I can't decide, it's dead even tie! Bill

  1. I don't use a FP for work but have several in my office at home. When I travel for business I take a couple of 75's or Duofolds outfitted as RB's. At home, I use the Parker 75 with any variation of the many nibs available. My favorite is the Spanish Treasure because its like writing with a piece of history. Another favorite is the 18kt Rainbow but does not get writtten with because of the delicate finish but it is a beautiful pen. Mechanically simple 75's are easy to work and write with. 2. Parker 51 with a sterling or gold cap. Good solid and dependable 3. late 80's Parker Duofold Centennial; good buy for the money. Will be tougher to find in the future. 4. na. Seen them and some are truly beautiful but see Saul Kitchener below 5. Any pen that doesn't work regardless of price. Can we get a new vote counter? Dean had trouble counting pizzas in Columbus much less votes.

Pen of the Year
      12/24/2000:  Laurent
1 - Vintage pen of the year: Sheaffer snorkel (any model, including PFM). 2 - New pen under #100: Sheaffer No-Nonsense, Vintage, Calligraphic - the cheap flat-tops that write so well. I gave one of them with a broad italic nib to a student who admired my Sheaffers and was particularly taken with the italic nib, and received a wonderfully-written thank-you note in return. 3 - New pen over $100.00, not a limited edition: The Sheaffer Intrigue. 4 - New Limited Edition: none this year. 5 - Worst pen of the year: Namiki Vanishing Point II, which can't be held comfortably because the clip is right under your extended index finger (except maybe by someone who uses inelegant writing "posture."

Best Vintage: Waterman 56 Ripple with flexible nib (comfy size, simple, attractive, great writer) --- Best modern under $100: Sheaffer Non-nonsense (at that price, how can you ever be disappointed?) --- Best modern over $100: Bexley, original style, any material you like (if there is a problem, you can always see Howard) --- Best 2000 LE: It's a toss-up between MB Schiller (the only MB besides Agatha Christie that I like), or Omas T-2 (only because I personally know two real people who like theirs a lot) --- Worst: I concur with Jeff L on the Lepine Graphyscaf (has anybody actually seen somebody write with one?).

1.First year Parker 51; 2.Vac-fil Parker 51; 3.Aerometric Parker 51; 4.Sheaffer Snorkel with a Triumph nib; 5.Sheaffer 1930's Balance Pen. (Obviously I can't use a flexible nib.) I have been biting my tongue reading the various postings about problems with new pens. I have never seen such gluttons for punishment, and the only thing I can say is that you deserve everything. It is difficult for me to understand how anyone can spend such outrageous sums on what has apparently been demonstrated time and time again as crap. I know from where I speak. I worked in pen retail for 9 years and have horror stories of my own. I don't really need to read all of yours, but they are further proof. Great writing pens can be had every hour of the day on the internet for $50 or under. Mont Blanc is missing a great retailing opportunity(they don't miss many). They should simply sell caps which could be clipped in a pocket with the white star peeking out. Prestige fantasies could be easily fulfilled and you would have the double benefit of not having to write with it. I don't want to only pick on Mont Blanc(it's so easy, though), believe me all the others deserve it, too. The Golden Age of Writing Instruments ended when Parker ceased production of 51s. Welcome to the Age of Lead. Happy Holidays!!

Pen of the Year
      12/24/2000:  Dean Tweeddale
Here is a great reason to post your selections for Pen(s) of the Year. Sam of Pendemonium has just offered a copy of Lambrou’s new book, “Fountains Pens, US and UK” to be given away to one lucky person who posts a “Pen of the Year” response. Everyone’s name, who posts a “Pen of the Year” message, will go into a hat for the drawing for this book. So before the end of the year get your vote in so your name can get in the hat. I’ll do my best to have all the votes tallied and announce the winners and the lucky winner of the drawing on Jan 1. If you have sent your vote directly to me via email you will have to re-vote on the bulletin board to be entered in the drawing. Be sure to include a valid email address so we may get in touch with you if you are the lucky winner. Seasons best to all. Dean Tweeddale

wahl eversharp and ambassador
      12/24/2000:  Gary
I have two questions this holiday season, hopefully someone will be able to offer some help. 1. I have a chance to pick up a wahl eversharp gold seal fp with deco band. The color is jade and the and the barrel has great color, the cap has some discoloration. and the clip is missing. The price is $125 , does this sound like a good price for the pen? What are my chances of finding a clip? 2. I recently picked up a Ambassador in a green cross hatch pattern. It is a bulb filler and that is why i bought it. Something different. The feed is a eversharp skyline style feed and the nib is silver though it appears the gold finish has worn off, the nib says " kreko iridium tipped fine" . Is the feed and nib correct? I realize companies may have bought parts from a central place or used similar styles. I was just wondering, too bad more of the reference books don't show nib and feed styles. Thanks and Happy Holidays Gary

Good news and an important discovery! I found that if you use Google as your search engine that they actually store a copy of the page that contains the words you are searching for. I was able to retrieve the recipes this way and not only printed them out but saved the page. If anyone else needs this page and can't pull it up just e-mail me and I'll send it.

Waterman - Carene
      12/24/2000:  Dean
I have a Waterman Carene, they appear to be made of brass with a very nice lacquer finish. The caps do not post well and in my case even if I post the cap very tightly it will work loose and fall off while I’m writing. My conclusion is it a nice pen with a slight design flaw so when I write with it the cap gets held in my hand or set on the desk. Dean

Parker 51/vac filler tubes
      12/24/2000:  Dean
I have used some 1/16” thin brass tubing to replace some of the Aero and Vac filler tubes. This can be purchased at many hobby shops and model airplane stores. I believe that the company that makes it is called K&S, they make all sorts of sizes and shapes of brass, aluminum, and plastic, usually in 12” lengths. I have taken 51’s apart and found metal breather tubes in them, not sure what type of metal as they were very corroded. I would imagine that the ones that I have replaced with brass breather tubes have more that likely corroded also, but the pens work just fine. I would agree though that plastic will last much longer so that could be reason to use it verses metal. Dean

funky ink!
      12/23/2000:  einv
hey penlovers, here's a new recipe for funky ink! i had occassion to buy the Sheaffer convertor- mini ink bottle package (retails for 3.99 at hobby lobby) and poured the "king's gold" ink into a new blue scrip ink bottle. The resulting color is grayish blue green (make sure to shake the big bottle well!) with variations depending on the pen you use to write with. (a "quick" pen giving more green, etc) What's more the color changes as the ink dries. have fun!

Parker 51/vac filler tubes
      12/23/2000:  Ron
I'm not sure that the original ones WERE metal. All of the ones that I've encountered were a plastic of some sort. Metal would corrode in the acid of the ink, I would think. It takes a little creative work to taper the end, but I use the plastic spray tubes like the ones that come with WD-40. Radio Shack sells them separately. Properly tapered, and the hole enlarged to about 1/16", you have a nice snug fit, and the tube will last as long as the pen.

1] Vintage pen: Parker Duofold. It was the "Big Red" ads back in '72 that had me lusting for one, and vintage pens in general. Couldn't imagine back then that they were still around!! #2] Pen under $100: Levenger True Writer. Don't laugh! They're decently made, and the smoothest writing pens that I have! Better than my Agatha! A close second is the Namiki VP. #3] OVER $100- Waterman Carene. A nice hefty pen. #4] - no vote. #5]Since no year or price limit is stated - WEAREVER! I had these back in 4th grade. The cap was always full of ink, I _always_ had blue fingers....34 years later I still shudder when I see one!

Breather tube for Aero 51
      12/23/2000:  John
Any ideas for replacement breather tubes for an aero-fill 51? One option obviously is to use some thin plastic tubing, and ream out the hole on the feed so it fits, but I would like to try to use a metal tube like the original. I know I can salvage one from a trashed 51, but is there a source for replacement tubing? Thanks, John

Parker 51
      12/23/2000:  Bob Walls
I picked up a couple of Parker 51's on ebay. They both looked black in the scan, but one was a dark purple/plum color. I have a cordivan-brown one and thought that this was the same color until I had both in bright light. It is really purple. This pen is a aerometric filler, I guess from the late 40's or early 50's. Is this an unusual color? I have black, gray, and teal. Thanks.

By what criteria do you judge "The Pen Of The Year"? By looks, or feel or by the way it writes? I have a collection of Sheaffer Flattops, many of which I've never used, but I have a favorite one for looks, and I switch around using others. If I were'nt a Sheaffer Collector, I would say that the Parker Duofold of the 1920's would qualify for all around best all around pen .

I'm thinking maybe we can have some year end fun and have a vote for Penlovers pen(s) of the year. Maybe I'll even figure out an award to give to the winners. I'm suggesting four categories:

1 - Vintage pen of the year, any vintage pen counts here, the model and manufacturer with the most votes wins.

2 - New pen under $100.00, an important category to many of us, an affordable pen that writes for a daily user.

3 - New pen over $100.00, not a limited edition though.

4 - New Limited Edition any price, however must have been released in the year 2000.

5 - Oh and maybe one other category how about worst pen of the year.

I'll tally the votes between now and the end of the year and post the results. Your welcome to vote in all or some of the categories. You can either send your vote to me via email (deant@seanet.com) or better for all Penlovers post them on the bulletin board for everyone to read. I know there are lots of you folks out there so go ahead and start placing your votes. Happy Holidays, Dean

Montblanc...
      12/22/2000:  Alan
I will say in the defense of the 4810 that I have an Optima that lost a piston on the first attempt to fill it - it was then sent back to Aurora and I had it returned within a week. That is where Montblanc is different. Warranty service seems to take months on end. I am impatient so I usually end up paying someone else to do the work for me. Then again, I did have to wait over four months to have a nib exchange done on my OMAS T2. However, no technical problems with those pens, in my experience. It is a classic situation: Montblanc has the spotlight because they are so well know and have a huge advertising budget. Practically everyone has heard of Montblanc. How many have heard of OMAS? Mostly just people interested in pens or collectors. Just because Montblanc has the most attention does NOT mean it is the BEST pen. People often confuse popularity with quality. They are much different.

new pen skips
      12/22/2000:  DonM
I have purchased a brand new Pelikan 800 and a Parker centennial. Both are impressive writing instruments with world class reputations. But they each have some start up problems, and a tendency to skip on the downstroke. any suggestions?

Even when MBs work
      12/22/2000:  Craig Nelson
the writing quality is no better than a $75 Sonnet. If you pay more than that, every extra cent is going to that snowcap logo.

Good Luck MIKE, Sincerely
      12/22/2000:  Raymond Wong
It is OK MIKE, to lose control once in a while. If I had read your post about your buying the MB, I probably would not put in my last post on MB Complaint website. Do let us know how it works. To tell you the truth, I know exactly how you feel. On my pen wish list, there is still a MontBlanc lurking behind my Aurora, my Omas and my Conway Stewart. I have just ordered my Aurora, so I am getting closer to my next MB. It shall be the Chopin, which has a converter. No piston this time.

Mont Blanc Now and Then
      12/22/2000:  Raymond Wong
I guess that most of us know there is a dedicated website for people to complain about MontBlanc pens. It is http://www.clearsail.net/~forrest/ which has not been updated for months now. I wonder if same kind of website exist for other brands. Anyone know? Also, I think the vintage MBs were better made. At least, I think the pistons were better made then. So VICKI you are probably right. I still have a pair of ca.1966 MontBlanc 22 that seems to work quite well.

Mont Blanc ca.1966
      12/22/2000:  Vicki
I would have to add my whine to the others who have been sorely disappointed by the shoddiness of Mont Blanc pens and roller balls. HOWEVER, having said that: I bought a beautiful 149 in 1966 or 1967 from Halls in Kansas City, and it has been marvelous lo these many years. (Heavy grading by this English teacher!) I paid $35 for it then (half my month's salary--lol) and I have loved it ever since. BUT, I have bought many other Mont Blancs since and have had nothing but junk. I have finally quit with them, but still love my "vintage" one. WERE they made differently then, or was I just lucky?

Weakness Prevails
      12/22/2000:  MIKE
(First, I am not the Mike in the E-mail under mine) I am the Mike who is a glutton for punishment.Yesterday I told you about my Mont Blanc 149 which refused to ink and with pressure by me snapped inside breaking off the winding bar and leaving me with a piston needing a winding stem and a possible $55.00 repair bill. I say I am a glutton because in today's E-Mail comes a promotional discount of $150.00 from Ashford.com. Naturally being interested in pens I browsed in the pen department and there it was, an already discounted Mont Blanc 146DS (sterling silver cap/black barrel) with the chance to deduct another large sum of money. I went back to the site three times and then I gave in.I was hooked. The pen looks so beautiful, large and comfortable to hold, I lost control. I was smittened by this pen.I myself have had a negative experience but it didn't seem to matter.Lack of reasoning overcame me. Call me crazy or whatever I just couldn't resist. And this is after I read that horrible story about the guy with the MB hemitite who needed his point narrowed and who had the piston break.I hope my pen has been around on the shelf for awhile and is not one of the newest from the production line. And I hope the piston is greased. It comes with a full year warranty with all free repair (parts and labor) so I believe that maybe the odds are now more in my favor.Who can tell what is going to arrive. It should be here tomorrow and you can be sure I will inform you right from the beginning how it works out.Wish me luck!!!

Button-fill repairs?
      12/22/2000:  einv
Hi, i recently acquired two vintage "golden king" fountain pens from ebay. They both have the same filling mechanism, you depress a button and this activates a pressure bar that depresses a sac which when released sucks up just like a lever fill. Well, my problem is that i broke one of the pressure bars since i tried to depress it but the sac had dried (as i found later, upon opening the barrel). Would any of you repair pros out there know where i could find a replacement bar? the pen sac company does not seem to sell them..

Mont Blanc Disasters
      12/22/2000:  Mike
I feel terrible for all the Mont Blanc problems. I refuse to pay the outrageous prices for a Mont Blanc. I read in these pen books about what a wonderful pen Mont Blanc is and how everything from about Parker down is garbage. All I have to say is that the best pens I have ever used are Esterbrook, and even some "garbage" pens I use are more reliable than the likes of the Mont Blancs you are talking about. I have this junky old Majestic, brown marblized stripe, that I use every day in the office, no fretting, no leaking. Just dependability. Maybe the adage should go, "You DON'T always get what you pay for." That's just my opnion though!

Re: Piston filler lubes?
      12/22/2000:  Richard
The best lubricant is ink itself. Draw a little ink in by moving the piston a short distance once or twice, enough to get the ink up on the walls of the barrel. Let the piston ride down into the ink (maybe with a little jiggle of the pen to splash the ink upward), then pull it up all the way.

Pelikan nib
      12/22/2000:  Klaus Altemueller
I just got a Pelikan fountain pen as a gift. It came with a medium 14C 585 gold nib on it. The pen is mint. It is a swirled blue mint color. I need to identify the model first off. Then I need to find out if anyone would be willing to trade for an EF nib or where I can get one. I am having a heck of a time locating one. Thanks in advance.

schneider rollerball refills
      12/22/2000:  Al
I am looking for rollerball refills from Schneider capless type. Does anyone know where I can purhase these?

      12/22/2000:  Lawrence
Please respond to my previous post on the Bulletin Board as I will be unable to check e-mail for a while. Thanks

      12/22/2000:  Lawrence
I'm seeking input on my new Omas Galileo: it skips on the upstroke and squeaks. Do I need a professional or will it "break-in" after a time ?

Piston filler lubes?
      12/22/2000:  Mike Bean
Is there any type of liquid lubricant that can be 'drawn up' into a piston filler (like Montblanc) to lube the inside of the ink reservoir in order to make operation of the piston filling mechanism easier or smoother without 'gumming up' the insides forever? Thanks, Mike

Worst Montblanc Story
      12/22/2000:  A. Wilson
Hearing all this about negative experiences with Montblanc I felt a need to share. Most of my pens go to John Mottishaw so I picked up one of the stainless steel and hematite 146 size FP's the other day and sent it to him to regrind to an extra fine. So he gets the pen and I get a phone call saying that the tipping material is "flawed beyond redemption." So he goes ahead and totally reworks the nib - and I had NEVER used this pen - ever. It had not even been dipped. So essentially this pen left the factory like that! Then I get another call saying that the pen will be a little late as the piston snapped off while he was testing it because there was not sufficient lubrication in the pen. That is Montblanc for all of you, I love the pen and am a sucker for them but this kind of situation seems to happen a lot, especially to me. What it boils down to is I had to pay $200+ on top of a $800 retail just to get the pen so I could USE it!!! It is working and writing perfectly now.

Chicago Pen Show
      12/22/2000:  Donald Lavin
Dear Friends: Next week Mike Fultz will be mailing table invitations and auction consignment solicitations for the 2001 Chicago Pen Show. Since those letters go only to table holders from last year and prior auction consignors, we thought we would share some of the information directly: Dates and location: May 3-6, 2001 at the Westin-O'Hare, Rosemont, Illinois Table Availability: All tables are embargoed. Since we were sold out last year, tables will be held until January 24th so that last year's holders may resubscribe. If you want a table for 2001 and did not have one last year, please contact Donald Lavin at Dlpens@aol.com, and ask me to add your name to the waiting list. We anticipate being able to rearrange the room to accommodate several extra tables for 2001. Tables will be placed in the hotel's south and east lobbies as well as the entire main hall. Smoking is permitted in the south lobby but not in the main hall. We will strive for a mix of vintage and new pen dealers as well as manufactureres as in the past. Weekend Registrant dealer/collectors are welcome to sell pens in the trading rooms Thursday, Friday and Saturday but the number of tables will be limited and must be shared. Brochures: Flyers on the Chicago Pen Show were distributed in Columbus and will be distributed at the Philadelphia and Los Angeles pen shows. We will make a general mailing about April 1st. The flyers and mailing contain a form on which to register for the show. If you have moved or do not believe you are on our mailing list, please e-mail your postal address to FultzPens@aol.com Auction: The Chicago Pen Auction will be held Saturday, May 5th. Consignments of rare and collectible pens and pen related items are solicited. Please contact Mike Fultz or Don Lavin to discuss your consignments. As in 2000, the items consigned to the Chicago Pen Auction are expected to be available for bid on Penbid.com

PCA...a real treasure
      12/22/2000:  Len Provisor
I'm a member of PCA, and I highly recommend membership which is more than worth the modest cost. The PENnant magazine is so diversified with content on so many aspects of vintage pens, papers, inks, repairs, clubs and shows. You'd benefit from the experience of others with a lifetime of writing instrument experiences. The vintage library source material alone is worth the membership, copies made available for a small fee. The Pen Collectors Club of America happens to be the largest pen club in the world, and is presently working with others world-wide to consolidate resource material, such as with The Writing Equipment Society in the UK (WES), it's direct counterpart and also well worth the membership fee. Your membership in these organizations benefits all pen collectors world-wide.

Vintage Conklin Help

Mont Blanc Disaster
      12/20/2000:  Raymond Wong
First WILL THORPE, I like your "Horse Pucky" for MontBlanc, which used to be my top choice. Not anymore. MIKE: I have the opposite to your problem. I have a MB 149 with a worn out piston. Ink is going above the piston and I dare not carry it in case ink comes out of the blind cap. It was a fine nib that is quite smooth, but I can only stare at it now. I will repair it one day, but I probably would spend the $ on an OMAS or something. Also I have an MB 146 whose piston is quite hard to move. I am afraid that I may break it if I turn it too fast. So my conclusion was that they have pretty poor fit of the pistons. I had a cheap 40 year old Lamy Artus whose piston seems to last forever. So I think MB should at least try and make better piston for the price they charge.

Mont Blanc Disaster
      12/20/2000:  Will Thorpe
Mike, Do what craig says. I can't help you with MB repairs and haven't fooled with a piston in 25 years. However in 1973 I ought a 149 for $37 at Fahrney's in Washington, DC. I carried and used it for 10 years with no problems. It flew over a quarter million miles with me, never leaked. In 1975 I bought a 146 ($54) that never gave me any problems except the nib seemed to wear fairly fast and no amount of work would make it smooth (the 149 was real smooth). I gave the 149 to my brother. The 146 I had for sale at a show this year for $100 and people backed away from it like it had a disease. I did some super work on the nib and gave it to a friend this year for Xmas. It appears to me from what I hear and read that the quality just ain't what it use to be. I have an Aurora Optima and a couple of Omas pens that don't have any problems. The piston on the Aurora is very smooth. The pistons on the Omas Pens are very tight, but nothing has broken or leaked in 2.5 years. Yes, they wrote just fine straight out of the box. I'm of the opinion that the buyers of new fountain pens are a small select group. We are a niche market, perhaps a captive audience, and that's why pen companies rarely ever advertise in GQ, Robb Report, etc. They advertise to us in Pen World International because we're hooked. That might be why all of the companies continually get sold, they are not expanding their market through advertising. Now since we're a hooked captive audience (called pen lovers) we buy into this bit about new pens needing to be tweaked, cleaned, adjusted, broken in, being tempermental etc. etc. Horse Pucky! Poor quality is poor quality. If we quit tolerating poor quaility it will go away and the pens (and companies) that are left will be better products. Just my humble opinion. Good Luck.

WTB Esty Nurse's Pen

Montblow
      12/20/2000:  Craig Nelson
MIKE: I think you should call around the various repair guys (not MB), explain what happened, and get their advice. Some will try to help you do the repair yourself over the phone; others will either be able to repair the piston, or replace it with a convertor. And while that work is being done, you need to console yourself with an M1000 (fantastic piston) or an Edson (gold convertor) while repeating the stylophile mantra: "I'll never be Montblown again ..."

Mont Blanc Disaster
      12/20/2000:  Mike
WILL THORPE: You sure are correct. A pen is supposed to be checked, double checked and signed off as working. This undipped, uninked business is a sure recipe for some type of problem. It should come certified from the factory that it WORKS.Here I have what is supposed to be a prized Mont Blanc 149, that big fat pen, and I go and turn the end to fill it up and it gets stuck. It has a piston fill mechanism where it fills from the bottle by suction.I give an extra turn and the end screw comes off leaving me with a plastic strip with grooves. I called the MB service number and they have a minimum charge of $55.00 dollars to have it repaired. The pen isn't that old, it was a gift from a family member and not filled or used that much.I feel like taking a hammer and busting it up.It goes to show that name reliabilty is not what it is all made up to be. Here I have a black and red Philias that keeps working and working with a converter, simple, easy and a pen that gives pleasure, giving a smooth line on the up and down stroke - less than $40.00. Has anyone encountered problems with the piston fill mechanism on the LeGand 146 or 149 and can give some help? Can I fix it myself? It is no wonder that all the new pens coming out from this company are either cartridge or converter fill. The era of high end engineering in pens must be coming to an end.It just makes you feel slightly disheartened. But I do feel better when I read that Fran says "she's my Girl" Thanks for your shoulder, pen lovers.

New Pens
      12/20/2000:  Will Thorpe
New pens should work. They are advertised as writing instruments. They aren't advertised as non-writing instruments that need repair and adjustment by the buyer. Don't except junk by any manufacturer that doesn't work and they'll improve their quality control.

Fountain pens

I am a collector of fountain pens. I currently have about twenty five fountain pen that I have collected over the past ten years. ink flow
      12/19/2000:  Craig Nelson
The Edson in fact performed spectacularly from the get-go - I did flush it twice with water and then twice with Florida Blue before even trying, however, and I'm positive that it will eventually be much smoother than it is now. I signed a big book contract this year and so went nuts with the damn pens. The Sonnet Cisele was scritchy at first, and is now a solid citizen. The re-inked LeGrand started out a schizo nightmare, but is now behaving beautifully. The biggest disappointment in fact, right out of the box, was this year's beauty queen, the Pelikan 800 -- skipping on the upstrokes, having to be held 'just so' to get a decent line - but she, too, is now as paintbrushy as her many fans demand. So with this year's crop, (3 of which are pretty much the top-of-the-line for their house), I only had a 25% immediate-flow-perfection moment . . . but with the physics of fountain pens taken into consideration, I didn't even expect that ...

Mike, if you are looking for someone who received a pen that wrote perfect first time out, I'm your girl. I recently purchased an Aurora 88 from Chuck Swisher and it writes like a dream--right out of the box. Mine even has an EF nib and it is one of the smoothest pens that I have ever written with. Try it, you'll like it!

We are looking for someone who didn't have a problem with a new purchase. I hope it's you.....

Ink

VICKI-Have you tried Pelikan 4001 ink? It tends to flow in almost anything. The black is great, I find the blue too pale for my taste. Karmann

Montegrappa ink flow
      12/19/2000:  Vicki
Hello "helpers." I am having a great deal of trouble with my Montegrappa Reminiscence (the smaller one), fine point, with the ink flow. It doesn't (flow, that is). I use primarily black ink. Do any of you have a suggestion for a brand of ink that will work in this pen. I dearly LOVE the pen, but it isn't much good to me if every time I begin to use it, the ink barely chugs out on maybe every third or fourth stroke. Thanks much.

Mail to JiaXian

Sonnet Cisele
      12/19/2000:  Craig Nelson
I agree that this pen is terrific, and now that you can get it many places with the BP for $199, it's the writing instrument deal of the year. It's isn't as brushy as a Souveran 800, but it's easily as smooth as a 149, and at 1/3rd the price ...

Bob D's ladies pen
      12/19/2000:  Don
Bob I have a Waterman's ladies pen in sterling silver (eyedrop filler) that has the same type of cap. I've had it for years and I know I've seen reference to it in books but can't remember where at the moment. Email me if you like and I'll send you a photo of it. It is a beautiful pen.

Good Luck!

Raymond: Glad to have provided some good pen sites in your quest for the perfect writing instrument. Hope you have good luck and are not disappointed like Caya was. It takes time to find exactly what you are looking for and the input from the people at Penlovers should really help.I am sure many people enjoy your other hobbies and they sound equally as interesting as pen collecting.Keep us up to date on your experiences. Have a Happy Holiday!

PARKER SONNET
      12/18/2000:  Karmann
YF, I purchased a Parker Sonnet Cisele with a 14K Med. Nib last year. I LOVE IT!! I've read lots of negative comments about the Sonnet, but I have had no trouble with mine at all. It lays down a nice wet line everytime. The nib is nice and flexible, and the overall fit and finish of the pen is very nice. I even use Penman Ink in mine, and have no problem whatsoever. I think for the price, it is an excellent pen. The Waterman Phileas is also a nice Fountain Pen for a very modest price. thedailyplanner.com has some really good sale prices on their Parker Sonnets right now. Check them out. Karmann

Mylar
      12/18/2000:  Will Thorpe
OK Bruce, I'm convinced. When you say butter smooth I know you're talking really smooth. That Mylar is obviously thin stuff. Cleaning between the tines is something for which I've never had a good solution. I'm going to order the 10 from David, spend weeks touching up old nibs and sell the rest at the next North Texas Fountain Pen Collectors meeting (Feb, 2001) or show in October 2001.

      12/18/2000:  yf
Any comment about the parker sonnet fountain pen?? might get it for my first collection. Do fountain pen usually write till we can see our writings on the other side of the paper (like the parker rollerball pen)?? I would like to used it for general purpose and don't want to write till I can see my writing on the other side of the paper(it look messy), any other fountain pen recommend?? YF

Ladies Pen
      12/18/2000:  Bob D
Hi Penlovers! I'm not much into cottecting ladies pens but found an interesting Waterman GF ladies pen and hope someone can share some insight. Its the typically ladies ring top kind, lever fill, plain GF. But the cap has an "under cap". OK, I know this is not proper splainen, you can pull off the ring top and the pen comes away with a cap and pen. cap screws off. I have a few pen books but have not seen anything like this. Its an interesting looking pen even though its a ladies size and all....... Thanks for any info... Bob

Nib grinding, mylar an sandpaper
      12/18/2000:  Bruce
I have found that even with 2000 grit sandpaper, one can get too carried away trying to get that butter-smooth feeling. On the other hand, once I had a nib with one tine broken. I don't know what the metal was, but not gold. I took cutter and file to the other tine, used some 400 paper, then 1500, then the mylar. It really is not bad! Another good use for the mylar is to spread the tines and slide the mylar between them once or twice for each side to really clean out the channel. They last a very long time if you don't use them a lot, but they do get all inky. I am on my second on in about three or four years. My suggestion is to buy 10 and sell the spares to local collectors who never get the pleasure of seeing Dave at a show.

Leather Pen Cases
      12/18/2000:  Mike
Hi Julie, I was looking in the Fountain Pen Hospital catalog and they have the Sacouche leather cases with a zipper all around which hold from 10 to 40 pens pens. Very handsome in black or brown leather from 69 to 129 dollars. I think you can get a discount. They also have another brand which holds 20 or 40 for 49 or 89 dollars. Call them up and see what they say.1-800-253-PENS. Good luck and let us all know about your adventures. We all enjoy various inputs.

Nib grinding
      12/18/2000:  Stephen Lam
I used to reply on very fine sandpaper to do the job. However, when I ventured into watch repair some time ago, I found the very fine grinding block used by watchmakers to sharpen tools excellent for nib smoothing as well. The good thing about such blocks (actually very small, 2 cm by 5 cm by 0.5 cm roughly) is that it actually last more than a life time. Furthermore, it is not damaged by water or ink. I also find that when you grind a nib, you need to constantly check it under a magnifier, which will help you determine how much to grind and where to grind. Having said the above, I must add that nib grinding must be done with extreme caution and it is likely that you may damage a few before you acquire the right technique for it.

looking for a leather pen case
      12/18/2000:  Julie
I'm looking to purchase a leather pen case that holds 20-50 pens for my aunt, who is a collector. Can anyone help direct me to the right place???? THANK YOU!

2000 Grit Sandpaper
      12/18/2000:  Will Thorpe
Bruce is probably right. It does require a bit of a light touch, some feel and some expertise to do it right, especially with sandpaper. Notice the mylar disks are for "properly shaped nibs" which mean they don't remove very much metal. You can shape a nib better with sandpaper. However I'm going to take Bruce's advice and try the mylar discs. Now one piece of 2000 grit or 2500 grit sandpaper lasts me for a year or two so why do I need to buy 10 mylar discs for $25? One, or maybe two discs I could use, but ten (10)!

Duofold Pencil in Jasper
      12/18/2000:  Gene Knecht
I am looking for a Parker Duofold Mechanical Pencil in Jasper to accompany a Duofold Fountain Pen (also in Jasper). Any help in locating a source would be most appreciated.

re: Re: sheaffer balance
      12/18/2000:  Waco Johnny D
Richard didn't get to see the correction I made to the post on that other board; it was the feeds I swapped, not the nibs. Sorry for any confusion.

Sandpaper for nibs
      12/18/2000:  Bruce
Sandpaper is not the best choice for nib polishing. Dave Nishimura sells mylar disks (http://www.vintagepens.com/nibsparts.shtml) for this purpose. With sandpaper, it is easy to go too far while never getting it right. I find 2000 grit good for final sanding when I need to smooth out a scratch on a cap or barrel.

2000 grit paper
      12/18/2000:  Randy
2000 Grit paper can be found at Wal-Mart in the automotive paint section. It would make sense that it can be found at any store that sells automotive paint supplies. Dont try wal-mart until after Christmas though, it just "ain't" worth it. been there, done that, and learned my lesson.

montblanc #88
      12/17/2000:  Ravicka
Could come tell me anything about a montblanc pen No. 88. It says lapple on the side and is thin and gold. It has a spring loaded lever and is a ball point. Thank you

2000 Grit Paper

You can get 2000 Grit Paper from Pendemonium. com, They also stock many other types of pen goodies. I have delt with them many times, and have found them highly reliable.

Sand Paper
      12/17/2000:  Raymond Wong
Will: I think I have seen somewhere on the internet that they made little discs for polishing pen nibs. But your sandpaper approach is probably better. You probably laugh, but my first attempt to polish my Parker 21 Super nib when I was in junior high was using a knife sharpening stone.

Caya's Balance
      12/17/2000:  Raymond Wong
My dear Mike. I am glad you got a laugh out of my post. I was trying to cheer Caya up. But seriously, I have seldom had problems with pens not working. Inkflow problem is a bit different. You cannot really detect them unless you use the pen. But I think they are relatively rare. Last month, for the first time in my life, I bought a pen without trying it using the internet. I bought from FPH and it was a Parker Duofold Centenial. I works great, right out of the box Now I get brave. I want to try more internet buying. Hence, Caya's experience naturally caused me some concerns. I agree that we all have to be a little bit of a pen repairman. It is all part of the fun. The same would apply to cars, or whatever we play with. But not too much repairs I hope, considering the prices of some of these pens.

yes, Willis,
      12/17/2000:  Craig Nelson
but if you think of how capillary action works - the molecules pulling themselves along in their chain - it makes more sense that a never-used, brand-new pen would Not work instantly and fluidly out of the box than that it would. My point was that many believe instant fluidity is a measure of quality, and I don't see why that would be so.

2000 Grit Sandpaper
      12/17/2000:  Will Thorpe
I just got an email inquiry about my last post. Yes, that's 2000 (two thousand) grit paper. You can also get 1000 grit paper but I find it to rough for nib work. The stuff usually comes in a small pack of several sheets for a couple of bucks. All I've ever seen is grey in color. I bought some 2500 grit at the last North Texas Pen Collectors Show and it is really great!

Pen startup
      12/17/2000:  Willis Brown
I don't know Craig. My two most recent purchases, a Waterman Carene and a Pelikan M430, both started instantly with no problems. No hesitant starts, no skipping, no problems, just smooth perfection. But, lets not go into the problems with my Sheaffer prelude and Waterman Laureat. Some pens work out of the box, some don't.

Balnce problems
      12/17/2000:  Will Thorpe
Actually I dip pens for nib polishing, it's important that the sandpaper be wet with ink.

Balance that won't write
      12/17/2000:  Will Thorpe
Clean the pen several times with half ammonia and half water. I recommend you return the pen to Sheafer's for a replacement nib and section. They will probably do it under warranty. Who is it that sells pens that don't write and won't take them back? You're getting ink through the feed but not enough air flow back into the cartridge. Ink flow is what causes the air to flow back into the cartridge. You need to get more ink flow. Yes, one way to do that is just by writing with the pen putting more pressure than usual on the nib, i.e. you are trying to create more space between the nib and the feed which lets out more ink causing more air to go into the cartridge. One other thing you might want to consider is polishing the nib. A certain amount of the metal nib must rub on paper when you write in order to transfer ink from the nib to paper. If not enough metal is touching paper then it's not causing enough ink to flow etc. This is one reason that broad nibs tend to write with more ink (wet writers) than fine point nibs. You can get 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper at most auto parts stores. Put the cartridge in the pen and write on the sandpaper or just make little loops. You only need to do this a couple of times. You don't want to wear a flat spot on the nib. Do this with a light touch please. This is not a guaranteed method but over the years I've increased the flow of ink in many a pen by just a little nib polishing. If it doesn't work, or you mess it up, you haven't lost anything and you can still send it to Sheaffer for a replacement.

pen start-up troubles
      12/17/2000:  Craig Nelson
I think Caya and etc. are experiencing the normal physics of fountain pens. All the people who say they've gotten pens that work great right out of the box ... well, it's NEVER happend to me, though I guess we could have differing ideas about what 'great right out of the box' means. Over the past few months for example, I got the severely discounted Parker Cisele set from FPH, a Pelikan 800 off Penbid, and reinked my MB 149 Traveler. None were silky smooth from the get-go, and the new ones were disappointingly scratchy and iffy . . . at first. Eventually however they were all completely (and distinctively) loveable with a few days of capillary action, reinking and cleaning. To me, every fp has needed manipulation of some sort or another to be all that it can be . . .

Cleaning Service Wanted!!! Maids
      12/17/2000:  Mike
RAYMOND WONG: I had a good laugh reading what you wrote about CAYA and her problems. I was comparing what you said to buying a new car and the car constantly stalled because the fuel wasn't going through to the engine. Your friends told you to take a Q-Tip and detergent and clean the hose out. Then the fuel came through.Your solution is a good one. I was under the impression that when we bought a new item it would work correctly and give satisfactory performance. Shouldn't someone at the factory have tested the product to make sure it worked? However, the more I read here the more I realize that alot of pen ownership is a do it yourself proposition. That isn't so bad after all. Maybe this is the way we bond with our writing instruments as they become part of our family.

Poor Caya
      12/17/2000:  Raymond Wong
Since I probably contributed to Caya's decision to get the Sheaffer Balance, I'd like to share some of my experience. I noticed that in one of my Balance converters, there was a little bit of grease inside near the lower end. I think that would contribute to the ink being held in the upper part of the converter. I used detergent, Q-tips, whatever I could find to clean it and it works better afterwards. Also, I used 13 year old Quink Blue-Black ink for the Balance and it seems fine. Other than the quality control problems (cracked barrel), I think it is a well-made pen. Like Mike and others said, try different ink and a little bit more patience. It should be fine after using it for a while.

Caya's Dilemma
      12/17/2000:  Mike
CAYA: You have become the "star" of the Penlovers bulletin board. I didn't realize there were so many people willing to help out with problems that seem so similar to all of us pen appreciators. You would think the manufactureres would listen in and learn something. It is wonderful therapy. We go to a piece of paper and write down our thoughts on various matters with the pen we love and presto we are all healthy again. It's all great fun! Have a good day.

Sheaffer Problem
      12/17/2000:  Karmann
CAYA-I have found, as Craig and Mike have said, the ink also makes a big difference. I had a similar experience with a Waterman Executive, it was a 14K fine nib and would NEVER write. I changed inks, and that made all the difference in the world (now if I could just find a skinny convertor for this pen-I'm tired of filling an old cartridge with a syringe, and the Waterman Convertor is too fat). I LOVE my Sheaffer INTRIGUE-I recommend that pen. Karmann

Caya's troubles
      12/17/2000:  Craig Nelson
Couldn't agree more with Mike. My Chanukah present to myself was a Pelikan 800, famous for writing like a brush right out of the box. Not for me; my experience was just like your Balance. Finally I washed it out with cold water and a little Fantastic, rinsed again and again, switched inks from Waterman to Levenger, filled and refilled the pen with ink, and it works beautifully. So give it a little time and try a different ink before giving up . . .

Caya's Problems
      12/17/2000:  Mike
Caya: I had this same problem with a MB and like a dope I pushed the point down and then up thinking the problem was the point. It wasn't.Thank goodness it was a strong point and came back to its original shape after I put it under very hot water. I remembered that heat makes the metal expand. Well anyway, sometimes it takes time for the ink to make a pathway down the part under the point. And then sometimes the pen needs a thinner ink to work well like the Shaeffer brand, cheap at $3.50. I tried about three different kinds of ink until I found the Waterman ink which works well. Then there is the paper. Some of the paper we use is coated so that the ink doesn't have a chance to be absorbed. You don't realize what junk paper there is out there until you try to use an ink pen, especially some of these recycled legal pads. Try seeing if the ink will flow when you press the point on a tissue. If all fails, clean the point with cold water wrap a tissue around to absorb all the extra water and use your feminine charm and a woman's right to change her mind and get rid of that piece of crap. You will never have a day of pleasure with it. Maybe it came with the curse from your first husband or a boy friend whom you jilted. (only kidding). Write on the board and tell us more about your adventures with this pen. P>S> What color is it? Maybe it doesn't have what the Chinese call Fung Scwei.

Adventure with new Sheaffers Balance
      12/17/2000:  Stephen Lam
My experience with new pens with stiff nibs is that the nibs need to be "broken in". By that I mean applying the right amount of pressure when you start using it to split the slit and thus create the right amount of ink flow. Have you tried this ? I remember, not so long ago (say 20 years), when one bought a pen from a stationer, this process was done by the salesperson before the purchase was completed. Nowadays, you won't find this type of service if you buy your pen from someone relatively new in the business and who may not have much experience using fountain pens.

rare pen?
      12/17/2000:  lawson
I recently found a pen that is marked parker etc on the barrel. It is about 5 3/4 inches long and the cap is 11/16 across the lip. It is made of a pale greenish grey plastic laminated like a vac(never seen this color before). It has three cap bands like an early Aurora and very pointy black end jewels. The cap and barrel are fluted like a parkette deluxe and it has a vacumatic filler just like a parker, it is all metal and a lock down version as in the early vacs.the mechanism is all white metal. looks like aluminum. has a breather tube like a vac also. the tassies look like brass and the clip also, which is an early feathered style. the imprint runs the opposite direction from the parkers i have seen. I appears to be very well made, and there is a waterman nib in it. Anybody, know anything about it?

More adventures with the Balance
      12/16/2000:  Caya Jappinen
Hi, all. Someone here encouraged me to post my adventures with the Shaeffer Balance, so here goes. I flushed that Parker Emerald ink. Used lots of hot water. (no-no?) I used about 1 Tablespoon of Simple Green in a mug of warm water & flushed it through the pen, using the converter-filler thing. (read about that once with window cleaner, Simple Green was on hand)Did the same again with water, rinsed it very well. Used the Shaeffer Cartridge. Ink comes through if I hold a paper towel to the tip & the top of the nib, but won't if I write lightly, just trying to lay the ink on the paper (as I always thought was correct form). It will come through if I put some pressure on the nib, but when I go to write words (not just loops) it just doesn't lay ink down on all parts of what I write. (Is this having a 'stiff nib'?) It's fustrating to use. I am wondering if I should return the pen to Shaeffer (where I got it from won't accept it, being used) & tell them to change it or just wait for it to be 'broken in' or what. (When I can, I'm going to get an Intrigue!!) Thanks for the advice!!

From what I understand, this (Green with Red Vein) Sheaffer color is actually a discolored Grey and red vein.

red vein green marble
      12/16/2000:  jmc
Hi. I have a question about pens of this color, in particular the Sheaffer Senior Balance pens. In all of the accounts I have read about them I haven't seen mention of a red vein green marble color. Black, Marine Green, Black and Pearl, Red Vein Gray yes, but no red vein green marble. Was this a color they made? Thanks for any replys.

Balance won't write
      12/16/2000:  Caya Jappinen
Got my Balance pen- however I filled it with an older (1 or 2 yrs) bottle of Parker emerald green ink I had. It kind of sort of wrote, not really, so I flushed out the ink, lots of water, & put a Shaeffer cartridge on. Now it won't write at all, nada, just droplets if I shake the pen towards the paper. (Just like my Prelude, brilliant me just figured out it must be the ink!!!!) How in the world can I fix this?? Please help! Thanks!! --"Heartbroken"

Christmas Times a Coming...
      12/16/2000:  Dean Tweeddale
Christmas is coming up fast… if a fountain pen(s) or any other pen related stuff is one your list now is the time for ordering I’m sure that all of the Penlovers and Stylophiles advertisers would be able to get you delivery by Christmas if you have your orders in this weekend. From my own experiences all of them have excellent service and are great folks to work with. So whether you need that nice stocking stuffer, new bottle of ink, maybe a new book, pen case or pouch, or maybe that new LE or the vintage pen that has always been on your loved ones list, maybe now in the holiday season, is the time to get that order in. Then again maybe you just received a nice unexpected Christmas bonus and feel you yourself deserve another pen, nothing like wrapping in up for yourself and pretending to be so surprised when you open it. Like always you can click on any of the advertisers ads or banners to go right to their sites. Check them out and whether near or far or all around the world I hope this Holiday Season is a wonderful time for you and yours. One final though that’s not really pen related, this is always a good time of year to help out those that are less fortunate that you. We all know of some or organizations that help them. Your old coat, shirt, or shoes that are still in good shape will seem perfect to those that don’t have. Or several cans of food and a bag of fresh fruit, which we take for granted, could be someone’s family Christmas dinner. Never hurts to lend a helping hand when you are able, and will always give you a warm feeling inside. Happy Holidays -- Dean

LMVH buying Omas
      12/16/2000:  Steve@PENSTOP
In answer to Mike P.-- I do not think the that the worry should be that LMVH will put Omas in Staples or Wal-Mart. On the contrary the question could be posed is "Will Omas end up a botique line like MB?" That would curtail the retailers- traditional or internet from offering any discounts. As of this time it appears that Omas will do business as usual. We recently had the opportunity to speak with Jean Luc Maligutti of Omas and he was very upkey and was comitted to maintaining a high standard of quality.

Balance pens
      12/16/2000:  Mark
I've heard several people mention that they've had trouble with the Balance line of pens but I recently bought a Balance Aspen with a fine nib and haven't had a lick of trouble (knock on wood. The nib is a semi flex and the size and girth make it a very comfortable pen to write with. All one can do is try a pen and see if suits them and works as needed.

Can someone direct me to a site where I can view examples of the script created by different nib styles? Thanks DonM

OMAS Pens
      12/16/2000:  Mike P
I've heard that OMAS has been bought out by the big French conglomerate LMVH (makers of Moet, Hennessy, Louis Vitton) and I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge if this would affect the quality of the pens they produce. I'd hate to see them become just another mass-market operation (Waterman, Parker) selling to the lowest common denominator

DEADLINE: 1928 Parker Duofold Monoplane
      12/15/2000:  Len Provisor

Esterbrook Pen Points
      12/15/2000:  Brad Gericke
I recently purchased a box of Esterbrook Pens (nibs). It is Assortment #7 and contains about 10 different points. My questions: -Are these pens only suitable for certain models of Esterbrook? If so, what are they? The Esterbrook fountain pens I have seem to have nibs with a different numbering system than the pen points. For instance, my fp's nibs are labeled, #1551, #1556, etc. while these points are #048 Falcon, #314 Relief, etc. -And how are these points attached to the feeds? Thanks for any help!! --Brad

Balance-Thanks

Get it, write with it, post an evaluation so we all know if you're happy or not!

I would appreciate any information related to this product. It consists of a handle and a number of nibs, probably intended for drawing. Thank you.

Display Cases, & my favorite pen
      12/15/2000:  Caya Jappinen
The Fountain Pen Hospital, at www.Fountainpenhospital.com, has display cases starting at $29 or so, big range. I had a blast looking at their website & catalog. My all-time favorite (looking) pen is a black w/silver cap Shaeffer Legacy 2.

Balance- Thanks!
      12/15/2000:  Caya Jappinen
Thank you all, you have been most kind & helpful! I went & ordered the Balance (just to get the suspense over with) & I may return it, based on all your comments if I don't like the feel. They don't let you return it if it has been used at all (hard to tell if it's a good pen that way) but I don't know that they could tell if I had just dipped the end in ink a little to see it write. (Please tell me if this is some big Faux Pas or something!) Nobody mentioned the Prelude, so I will take it that it's not a terribly popular pen. Thanks again!

Phileas
      12/15/2000:  Mark
Just to set things straight - the Phileas fountain pen is made by Waterman. And yes, a very nice pen rivaling many of the other more expensive pens.

Rotring pencils
      12/15/2000:  Steve
Marlin, I had a similar problem with my Rotring 600 series pencil a couple of years ago when it was new. I solved the problem myself by taking apart the feed mechanism and re-aligned the rubber gromet. I think that it is real snug on the lead when it's new but it will wear longer. I left a little lead sticking out when done using for a couple of days and the graphite from the lead eventually lubricated it well enough to work fine......that was two years ago. Good luck.

Pen Chests
      12/14/2000:  Jack
Does anyone know the address and telephone number of the Saracen company that makes pen chests. They are sold at Colorado but they seem to be highly priced. Most chests seem to be remakes of Silver chests that hold eating utensils. Can you offer any advise?

Philias Fountain
      12/14/2000:  Mike
CAYA: I agree with Karmann that the Shaeffer Phileas is a great pen. I have a few other brands but this seems to be a strong contender for a near favorite. Especially in the marbled red and jet black the medium point is solid and always seems ready to write even when on its side for a day or two. If you look around you can find it a discount office Max or Staples. There is even a package which includes a bottle of ink with the blue marbled model. Coming in a under $40 dollars it's a stong pen with good value.I always seems to go back to it even only to say hello and write a few thoughts. I really enjoy this Bulletin Board.I enjoy hearing what everyone has to say.

Sheaffer Balance
      12/14/2000:  Raymond Wong
I have had good luck with my 3 Sheaffer Balance Classics. I think this is the model that sells for $85.00 US. The first one I bought for $99.99 Canadian and the second for $39.99 Can and the third one for $29.99 Can. There is a hairline crack on the barrel for the last one, but for that price I don't mind. I use it everyday and have no problems with it other than I don't like the strokes it makes as much as my Parkers, say. Since all 3 of them are black in color, I can switch them around and no one would notice. I am nervous about using an expensive pen in an office where the standard issue is a 30 cent BIC. In any case, I like the Sheaffer Balance's I have, but I also believe that the quality could be uneven and you really have to be careful choosing.

Medium plated nib. Reduced to $25.00 ... 3. Parker 61, black barrel and hood. Perfect GF cap without any dings. Cleaned and writes well. F nib. Typical discoloration on barrel is only moderate (not as severe as many I have seen) and one can still see the green base color. Geart Imprint. No Brassing. F/XF nib with a little flex. Has not been restored. Reduced to $45.00... > > 5. Parker Slimfold in Burgandy. Great condition and a great writer with a wonderful flexible nib that is a Medium with some "stubbish" qualities to it. minor brassing on cap band. Areo fill with great transparancy in the sac. Reduced to $70.00... 6. Waterman 0552 1/2 V. Sheraton pattern. Brassing to end of pen (appears to be from posting the cap) and a little on the cap. Tastefully engraved with three initials. Correct 100 year nib, XF/F and quite nice flex. Writes beautifully. Asking $70.00... 8. Sheaffer ring top, 5-30 pen in black and pearl. Minimul discoloration (on a scale of 1-10 I would rate this one at least an 8). No Brassing. XF/F nib that has the typical Sheaffer "flex" to it. Not Restored. Asking $55.00... 9. Conklin Endura Symetrik ring top. No brassing. Beautiful Green Marble. STRONG imprint (not often found on Enduras). Correct F nib. Nice example of style and color. Asking $115.00... 10. In addition to the pens, I still have some of the Planck, 14 kt Flexable Stub Nibs (appx. 1mm wide) available for $40.00 each including First Class shipping.... 11. Diamond Medal "Comrade" in Jade. Great color with little discoloration. Clip has brassing. Pen has been fitted with a replacement Planck 14kt Stub nib (I will send the original nib as well). Asking $65.00... 12. SOLD... 13. Parker Doufold Jr. Orange. Brassing on band and clip. Minor lip dammage from someone overbuffing (I presume). This is definitely a User Pen. Asking $60.00

Re: sheaffer balance?
      12/14/2000:  Richard
The modern Balance has a VERY uneven level of quality. A few write well, most are horrible. Waco Johnny D used to have a nearly self-sustaining business replacing Balance feeds with feeds from Sheaffer Viewpoints. He says, "Most Balance IIs I repaired had either defective feeds or poorly-adjusted feeds or sprung (upturned) nibs or a combination thereof. I repaired the vast majority by swapping in a nib from a new Viewpoint and heat-setting the feed. Since my supply of Viewpoints has dried up, I no longer fix these pens." I can't, in good conscience, recommend a modern Balance. I've written with some BEFORE WJD's fix and with some AFTER it. There's simply no comparison.

Sheaffer Pens
      12/14/2000:  Karmann
CAYA-I just purchased a Sheaffer INTRIGUE-it is a wild looking pen. I love the way it writes, althought the nib is very stiff. It costs a little more than $85. I have really great things about the WATERMAN PHILEAS Fountain Pens, and they're certainly in your price range. I have a Phileas Ball Point and love it. I've read many glowing reviews about the Fountain Pens. I have a Waterman Executive, and I love it-good ink flow, fine point writes smooth. It has a flexible 14kt nib. You might try the PHILEAS out before you purchase something else. I also recommend the SHEAFFER INTRIGUE-a little top-heavy with the cap on, but a substantial pen that writes well.

Sheaffer Balance
      12/14/2000:  Ron
I have one of the Sheaffer Balance Special Edition pens. Nice pen, well made, writes well, and to my surprise has resisted scratching on the surface. If I remember correctly, the Balance won a Pen World Readers Choice award for "best Retro pen" and "best value." (either 1998 or 1999 - I'd have to go dig out the copy to be sure)

Sheaffer Balance
      12/14/2000:  Will Thorpe
I have a Sheaffer Balance in the Amber Glow (marbled brown) with a medium nib. The cap won't post tight, falls off on the floor all the time. The clip was a cheap piece of thin metal. I sent it back and the factory replaced the clip for free, clip is OK now (I also believe the factory changed to a stronger clip later in production). The pen came with a broad nib which had poor flow. Sent it back and the factory replaced it with a fine which turned out to be scratchy. Sent it back again and the factory replaced it with a medium nib for $5.00. Pretty good factory service, had it back both times in a week. However the medium nib skips, hard to start the ink flow. It's a beautiful pen, it looks very nice in my display case. Perhaps my pen was/is the exception. Others will comment I'm sure. I have one pen that cost less than $40.00, a Waterman Phileas. It has a stiff (no flex) nib that is smooth and never fails to work. It has good ink flow, actually writes slightly wet which I like.

shaeffer balance?
      12/14/2000:  Caya Jappinen
I recently got a gift certificate to an online catalog & want to buy a fountain pen. I had two Shaeffer Preludes before (one lost, the other just "died", won't write, I don't know why) & I am considering the Shaeffer Balance. Is this a good pen? Is it worth the $85? Preludes are so much nicer looking, but does the Balance feel & write substantially better? If they are virtually the same I will get a Prelude, but if the Balance is a noticably better writer I will get it. Also, am I missing a great pen by another company in this price range? Maybe there is a better one altogether for $85 or less. Thanks!!

Rotring Pencils

I just wanted to let everyone know that I have had nothing but trouble with Rotring mechanical pencils. First let me say I think they are great and the company has always sent me a replacement free of charge. I am now on my third pencil and yesterday it did the same thing all the rest of them did. The point will no longer come out and the thing is jammed AGAIN!

Need help identifying pen!
      12/13/2000:  Karma
don't know much about pens, EXCEPT that I would like to identify an ink pen that was given to me as a gift. I am trying to find a replacement for it. It is burgundy color, 5 " long, with a roller/ ball-point style nib. No cartridge: ink is drawn up by twisting a plastic piece (which broke !) The words "PAN" and MADE IN GERMANY" are stamped on the outer plastic. Originally it came w/ a piece of paper (now lost!)describing the pen's marvelous qualities and listed a vendor in Wisconsin. I doubt the pen is worth much to collector's, but I liked it very much for simple writing. If anyone knows of this pen or a link to its manufacturer, please email me. I would like to treat myself to a new one for Christmas! Thank you!

Dear PenLovers: I am a newspaper editor and we are tracking a story about a Japanese fountain pen. The pen allegedly was bought for $1 at a Vermont garage sale, sold on Ebay for $20,000 and then sold again for $270,000. This sounds improbable but we thought it was worth a check. Atypical W-E Skyline
      12/12/2000:  Ross
I bought an interesting Skyline (oxymoron, perhaps?). I'm curious if anyone on Penlovers can tell me more about it. The pen, standard sized, burgundy barrel & derby, has a gold filled cap with linear stripes (instead of circular), a visualated section (instead of solid), and a two tone nib (that looks particularly deco). A scan is visible at http://www.rosspens.com/images/pen459.jpg I've heard that it might be a "Presentation" model, and I've also seen in the small F&S (which I'm afraid is the most typo prone book I've ever purchased) a "Gold Award". Any ideas? Thanks - Ross

WTF
      12/10/2000:  Steve
Looking for a 1950 era Parker pen display tray. This tray would be approximatly 18.75 inches long by 5.5 inches wide by .5 inches thick. The pens lay at an angle in the slots, maybe 12 or so across. It would probably be a light oak colored wood. I have the display totaly refinised, just need an original tray! Please email if you have one like this I could purchase. Thank you.

Pen Show Parking
      12/9/2000:  Mike
I am sure everyone is very excited about the Pen Show at the Hilton Hotel which is in an excellent location in the center of town.Easily accessable by all means of transportation. However be advised for those of you who aqre driving in from the surround areas of New York that parking is brutal and you must watch all of the signs very carefully. They have a cadre of tow trucks to remove all violators with a $275 impound and violation fee. This trip is not the time to be saving a few bucks by parking in the streets. As a New Yorker, do yourself a favor and pull your car into their garage of the hotel. It will cost about $20 or so dollars but will give you the best piece of mind. Sunday there is metered parking at 25 cents for 15 minutes using quarters and it is available around the streets from the 50's to the 60's off Sixth Avenue. I hope this helps to make your experience at the pen show a most positive one. See you there! I can hardly wait to hit those tables. Happy Holidays.

Re: Gillette & Rubbermaid
      12/9/2000:  Richard
Apparently according to a rOtring representative, the company will continue to manufacture its current line of pens. If this is correct, there's still hope for Parker and Waterman.

Re: Gilette & Rubbermaid
      12/9/2000:  Richard
Given that rOtring has apparently been flushed down the tubes by Rubbermaid's parent company, I fear that this deal sounds the death knell for Parker and Waterman. Alas, George and Louis, we did not know ye well enough.

Vendome buys Montegrappa?
      12/8/2000:  Len Provisor
It appears the great shake up of 2001 is continuing, with the 2000 purchase of Omas by LVMH (Louis Vitton, Moet & Hennesy) it will be v-e-r-y interesting to see where the lines of battle of these great pen names will be drawn relative to other high quality luxury pens such as Omas, Henrik Wigtrom and Michel Perchin. Do you suppose Vendome is concerned about the eventual shattering of their precious resin snowflake, or part of their plan to "engulf and devour" those who have been nibbling at their heels? There is trouble in the air at Newell/Rubbermaid with drastic losses in profit, and the acquisition of Parker/Waterman/Paper-Mate is questionable. Just maybe, Gillette will be forced to finally break up the Stationery Products Division to liquidate these famous pen lines in order to effect a sale. Personally, I hope every day that Parker will resurface under it's own management and be restored to Janesville, WI.

      12/8/2000:  allen gross
For those of you who may not be aware of it, I've heard from several reliable sources within the pen industry that Montegrappa was just purchased by the Vendome group. Since they already own Montblanc, Cartier,IWC, and many other leading companies, it puts Montegrappa in very elite company.

Osmiroid Pens
      12/7/2000:  Ray Ulrich
I am also a long-time fan/user of Osmiroid pens. Sadly, I discovered from the customer service people at www.sanford.co.uk that all Osmiroid products were discontinued at the end of 1999. The good news is that Osmiroid nibs are available at www.penmuseum.co.uk. As far as pens go, Osmiroid nibs will fit Esterbrook pens and the combination is wonderful!

New York Pen Show Update
      12/7/2000:  Penstop
Hi Everyone:
We have good news concerning the New York Pen Show.
We have a contract with the New York Hilton Towers Hotel on 53rd Street and Broadway, New York City, for September 28, 29 and 30, 2001. The show is scheduled to be open to the public for three days.
September in New York is magnificent, weather is excellent, there are still remenants of summer, even at the end of the month, low rainfall and much to do.
The Hilton Hotel is located in the heart of the Big Apple, walking distance to 42nd Street and its many sights an sounds.

The hotel rooms have been negotiated down from $329 to $220, which is an incredible price for this upscale, centrally located hotel in the height of season. We are please to be able to offer it.
There are only a limited number of rooms at that rate, so anyone wishing to attend should contact us as soon as possible to reserve their space. The response has been overwhelming. You call me for further information at (718)434-3713 or email us at info@penstoponline.com.
I will continue to post updates on what is happening as they become available.
Maryann and Steve at PenstopOnline

New Pen Plus Magazine is Here!

Osmiroid Pens
      12/7/2000:  JerriRae Carper
I am a professional calligraphy/calligraphy teacher. I have used Osmiroid Pens for years. Sadly, they are all "dying." I cannot find a source for them -- lots of places that "used to see them" but no place that still does. Your help will be greatly appreciated. --JerriRae

You might make a visit to www.penbid.com - it's an auction site devoted exclusively to pens and pencils. I've found some nice stuff there.

Re: Gold Filled - Richard Rosen
      12/7/2000:  Richard
Pressure foiling is a method for making gold filled pen parts and similar flattish items, where a relatively thin layer of gold is required. Gold filling is also done by investment casting around a core of base metal; the wax pattern is built up around the core, the assembly is cold-cast into a plaster mold, the wax is melted out, and the precious metal is cast into its place. This is how school rings and other thick, heavy, filled items are made. (But most quality school rings are - or used to be - solid rather than filled. Mine is, and it wasn't particularly expensive.) For a foiled item that is intended to be engraved, the area to be engraved can be built up with a "pad" of the gold alloy before the foil is applied over the entire surface. (This technique is also used on plated silverware to keep wear points such as fork tine tips from wearing through to base metal.) Note also that multiple layers of foil can be applied to build up more gold on the surface.

Does anyone have any experience with www.pens.com.hk ? I'm looking for an Edson Sapphire fountain, and they've got the best price I've found. Thanks . . .

The Old "Bulletin" Board
      12/7/2000:  Paul
I am hoping that someone can help me. When i started collecting, there used to be a web site "The Ink Spot" that hosted a listing of pens for sale. Towards the end, many other items started to appear on the board...now I can't find the board and all links have errors. Wondering if anyone knows of a site (outside of E-Bay) for buyes and sellers of Pens. Thanks to all. Have a great Holiday Season!

Gold Filled
      12/6/2000:  Richard Rosen
Richard... You seem to know about gold filled objects. The subject has had me thinking about it for years. You'll have to agree "gold filled" is a terrible name in that it sounds like the object has the gold mixed in, or filled in within it. But that aside, it still puzzles me when I try to understand how a gold ring (just as an example) that has been CAST, could also be gold filled. This is commonly done with school rings and other such shaped objects. And also, why wouldn't hand engraving on a gold filled surface not cut through the "filling" and expose the metal underneath to the elements? I know that on pocket watches, where the filling IS quite thick, (often guaranteed not to rub through to the base metal for 20 or 25 years) the engraving can be quite deep and not cut through.

Grieshaber
      12/6/2000:  Andy Rothman
Mike -- I can virtually assure you Lipic did not make Grieshaber nibs. You probably saw a pen with a replaced nib (whatever nib happened to be handy). I have a red/black mottled har rubber Grieshaber with a wonderfully smooth Grieshaber nib. These are uncommon pens to find, but worth the hunt. There is more information on Grieshaber in Schneider & Fischler.

      12/6/2000:  Don Burns
Terri, I just checked out the web site of Total Office Products at go-pens.com They have the Mont Blanc Hemmingway fountain pen and ballpoint but I'm not sure about the rollerball. By the way, I have dealt with these people too and they are wonderful. I met the owner at the recent Columbus, Ohio pen show and found him to be truly helpful and professional. They also tend to have very good prices. By the way, the owners name is James. Oh, if you go to their web site you might also check out the Aurora 75th Anniversary pens; they are gorgeous. Have fun and happy hunting.

      12/6/2000:  Don Burns
I'm sure there are many, many good sources for limited edition pens but for openers I would suggest you contact Fountain Pen Hospital (a New York store). They do have a web site and you can order on line. I have bought pens from them in the past and found them to be knowledgeable, prompt, and thoroughly trustworthy. For other sources you might want to check out the Glen Marcus page of great pen stores.

Christmas gift

My husband is a new pen collector and I don't know a thing about pens. I am looking for a great pen as a Christmas gift...any suggestions? He likes the expensive limited editions. He mentioned a Mont Blanc Hemingway (?)...can somebody tell me where to find this pen? And other suggestions are welcome! Please email me at terrigrego@aol.com. Thank you!

Re: Gold Filled - Richard Rosen
      12/6/2000:  Richard
Pure gold is extremely malleable; that is, it can be formed into extreme shapes very easily. It is also extremely ductile; that is, it can be drawn out into wire or pressed into creases to an amazing degree. The alloys used for gold filling are similarly workable, although not so workable as pure gold. (If they were that workable, they'd wear rapidly.) The foil in gold filling is applied, as Waco Johnny D says, under EXTREME pressure. Think about how the sheet metal parts of your car are formed, under the pressure of a stamping press. Gold filling is done under the same levels of pressure, but it is generally applied by means other than metal dies. The foil is actually forced to "weld" itself to the underlying base metal, stretching and forming as it does so, in much the same way that a blacksmith can pound two pieces of hot iron until they weld into one.

Gold Filled
      12/6/2000:  Richard Rosen
Re: Gold Fill and Gold Plate. It's easy for me to understand covering an irregular shaped object chemically with microns of gold but can anyone add any light to forming gold fill around irregular objects like finger rings, Parker clips, or hand cut deep engraving that doesn't cut through the fill and expose the base metal?

RE: Nib grinding
      12/5/2000:  Reuben
Suhail, Contact "John@nibs.com" and pose your question to him. He makes custom nibs and repairs damaged nibs, so he might be able to handle your request. The prices posted on his web site seem to be reasonable. Good luck.

Nib grinding
      12/5/2000:  Suhail Alam
I was wondering if anyone knew someone who would grind stainless steel nibs for a decent price. The thing is that I need them ground to an extrafine/fine sharp oblique. And it'd be a bonus for me if he could do that at various angles. I use these kinds of nibs for Persian calligraphy. Thanks!

Re: Gold Fill
      12/5/2000:  Richard
What Waco Johnny D says is basically true, but - and I know he'll come over and whack me for this - there actually is a difference. Gold fill, being foil, puts a LOT more gold onto the piece. Plating runs just a few microns thick, but 1/10 10K gold fill, for example is actually 1/10 by weight of the whole piece. This means that if you have an object that weighs 1 gram, 100 milligrams are 10K gold, so that the actual weight of the gold is 40 milligrams. A plated object that size might have less than one milligram of gold on it. Plated parts will brass much sooner than filled parts will.

Parker Duofold Rollerball

re: Gold Fill
      12/5/2000:  Waco Johnny D
Gold filling is the attachment under extreme pressure of a thin gold foil to some sort of base metal. Gold plating is the attachment under specific heat/chemical conditions of gold-metal molecules to some sort of intermediate plate, usually nickel (which is plated over copper which in turn is plated over the base metal). Plating is done in large hot tanks filled with solutions containing the required metal.

There is no inherent advantage of one type of gold adornment over another, everything else being equal and proper procedures followed (especially material prep). 5 microns of gold plate will last as long as 5 microns of gold fill, and vice-versa.

Montblancs...
      12/5/2000:  Michael R.
First of all Mike, nice to hear that you enjoy you're Boh?e. Life is just not fair, I have the Noir et Noir (silver trim and black stone) and would love to have the red stone to the silver trim (why just don't trade stones!), but serioulsy I don't think MB does care a cent about our wishes (I'm from Germany and service is not better here at all) to exchange stones so I thought maybe just to contact a goldsmith to ask if it is possible for him to do this (might have to buy a new additional stone). By the way MB has big trouble to bring the Boh?e into the stores; no catalogs, not enough pens (a store in a bigger town might get to or three pens) so they gonna miss all the christmas gift selling ! Can anybody comment on the MB Edgar Al Poe Writers edition? Do you think MBs Writers edition are worth its money (except the Hemingway) at all? Take care Michael R.

Greishaber
      12/4/2000:  Mike
Hey everyone! I was out Saturday morning looking for something for a gift exchange. Of course, there in the flea market case was a red pen, with parts missing, for a dollar. I asked them to take it out, as anything in the pen was worth a dollar. Come to find out, it is a red Greishaber pen, or the remains of one at least. I know little about this brand, but a close examination of it suggests it is a quality pen. The section fits into the barrel with smooth precision. Even the lever filler is odd! The lever has a metal tab on the back of it that slides into a long slot on the pressure bar. I have a question for all you all out here. Did Lipic make nibs for Grieshaber? This high-end Grieshaber has a high-end Lipic nib in it. Is that odd or what. Let me know what you think of my bargin!!

Gold Fill
      12/4/2000:  Raymond Wong
Can some one tell me the difference between gold electro-plated and gold filled? Does one tend to brass or stain more easily than the other when in contact with ink, or oil on fingers?

My father's WWII pen
      12/4/2000:  John Vallely
I'm looking for some help. I have a diary my father kept in World War II. In 1944, before going overseas he noted in his diary that he bought a Sheaffer pen for $6.50. He probably bought it at the base px, and may have gotten a discount because he worked there. I'd like to know whether that info is enough to tell exactly what kind of pen he bought? I thought it would be fun to hunt around for one like he owned. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. John Vallely

Silver
      12/3/2000:  Kristi
Another thought is to use silver often so that it doesnt develop tarnish. Wipe gently with a jewelers cloth, store in anti tarnish cloth. or put a few pieces of plain white chalk in the box or drawer with your pens or silver. The anti tarnish cloth prevents exposure to sulpher and chalk absorbs it.

snorkel and w/e finds
      12/3/2000:  Gary
It has been quite a week for me. I have recently gotten back into pens, after a foray into presidential buttons and presidential seal gift items, both of which i still enjoy. This weekend turned up some great finds and some questions. My purpose is not to brag, but to offer hope - pens are there at the right price, we have to get lucky. I will probably go months without any luck. I picked up the following quite by accident, i was at the second to last booth in a small antique show in town looking at political buttons when my daughter of 6 bumped and moved the case.Underneath was a thin case with a bunch of pens, my other daughter said " Dad, look at all the pens!", loudly i might add. She has to learn to play it cool. This is what i found: 5 - snorkels in gray, black, burgundy, green(working) and w/ black barrel and chrome cap. { I have the blue one - what other colors are out there? } { I know there are a alot of cap band variations and cap styles} PFM II - in dark blue esterbrook - green large diameter university in black and a majestic in red stripe - no big deal but cap ring is same pattern - interesting sheaffer green stripe lever filler sheaffer jr red stripe lever filler total for above $60, this goes with the other 7 and two matching pencils i picked up last weekend for $45 A great way to get into pens again. I also picked up 37 pen worlds for less than a $1 each, i only need three to complete the set. Like I said .... a great week. Time to order repair supplies and get started. Gary

Tarnished silver pens
      12/3/2000:  Joyce Levy
Any time you polish silver you take away a little metal. I also have a collection of silver pens. I keep them under Pacific Silvercloth. It is treated to absorb the sulfer in the air and the silver never tarnishes. It was invented for silver flatware, and it is available at good fabric stores by the yard. It is brown and thin, and can be cut and sewed into any shape of cover or pouch you like. Britex Fabrics in San Francisco sells it.

Mont Blanc-Boheme
      12/1/2000:  Mike
Michael R. I am a little late but thanks for your excellent input on the Boheme Mont Blanc. I went ahead and purchased it because I enjoy supurb engineering and this disappearing nib and cartridge opening and locking takes the cake. The weight as you say is very good and the size (width) is most comfortable. The pen is very very handsome. The loading of the cartridge and movement of the pen parts make it more than just a writing instrument. It's so much more than just a pen.I agree the price was high.Because of the complicated mechanism you must have a legitimate warrantee for repair so I bought it direct from MB.It is not as simple as one of their cartridge loading other models where really all you have to worry about it protecting the point. The discount (authorized) dealers don't have it in stock yet either. It writes beautifully. Of course I would have preferred the black stone with the gold bands so I called MB in New Jersey for information. Some underling told me that is the way it comes. However I am sure things can be adjusted if I wanted more definite information. I see no reason why it can't be ordered directly from Germany with the stone changed. Well that is what happened since I asked for input on the the new MB Boheme. By the way my nib is medium, I probably have a heavier hand than you. Happy holiday!
