One of the most desireable Parker pen to the avid Parker collector is the 1988 Centennial, celebrating Parker's 100th anniversary. The Collector's Set was a special edition consisting of a Duofold Centennial, a wooden desk tray, a bottle of ink, and papers, all in a box. We have three NOS mint sets left. We also have a Marble Blue 1988 Centennial in a rare wooden box. Happy Holiday. |

| Update : The Katie Hill Memorial Pen Fund - Chartpak donation
|
| |
8/30/2002: Len Provisor |
|
Chartpak, the U.S. distributor for Pelikan has advised me of their generous donation of 100 M150 fountain pens for this Fund.
The M150 was never introduced in the U.S. so it will be very special. All green barrel, black cap, gold trim and gold plate steel nib.
Pens are on the way to me now, we will post images of both Pelikan and Monteverde pens on the Katie Hill web page on the Home Page of WWW.PENTRACE.COM very soon.
I'm happy to say that we have just over $4,000. in donations from many generous friends and donors.
Your minimum donation of $50. per pen of your choice will include a fine paper memo pad and an ink blotter imprinted with a recent quotation of Katie's about friendship. Each pen will have engraved on the cap : Katie Hill Forever our Pen Pal
On Wed Sept. 4 I will make a random drawing of 10 names from all donors who may choose to have their nibs custom ground by Richard Binder of Richard's Pens WWW.RICHARDSPENS.COM
Richard is famous for his remarkable nib grinding.
This donation offer is limited to the total availability of 100 Pelikan M150 pens donated by Chartpak and 100 Monteverde Invincia donated by Jerry Greenberg of Monteverde. Pelikans are all fine nib, Monteverde are all medium.
Thank you to everyone who has generously donated, and those who will.
All donations received on behalf of the Katie Hill Fund will be distributed to benevolent organizations of the family's choosing. | REDUCED PRICES ON REMAINING NOS PENS!

Lets get rid of these, folks! The following are NOS old style Pelikans, complete with clamshell boxes and all papers: Burgundy M600 Fine nib was $125 now $115, Black M600 X/F nib was $115, now $105. M200/K200 Blue clicker button bp F nib, was $65 now $59. Above includes domestic US shipping, insurance extra. Also, I have what appears to be NOS Waterman LeMan 100 (the big one!) in black laque over brass. The pen is equiped with a fantastic two-tone broad nib. Convertor, ink cartridges, papers, inner and outer boxes. Here's the problem: The cap has what appears to be two either deep scratches or hairline cracks starting at where the clip is attached. Not sure if the cap was switched, or what, but the rest of the pen is perfect. I'm sure Waterman service could replace the cap, probably at minimal or no cost, since the pen appears unused. Even as is, the cap is intact and could certainly be used. Price is just $79 plus post and insurance.Usual rules, first confirming email gets 'em. (Pens all came from the now famous "closed pen stationary store.") Thanks Jon R |
| SALE ON VINTAGE PEN CATALOGUE REPRODUCTIONS!
|
| |
8/29/2002: Jon Rosenbaum |
|
For the first time ever, I am offering a special Labor Day Sale on my reproductions of vintage fountain pen catalogues! (The wife says they take up too much room !!) So through Monday 11:59pm PDT, order any ONE catalogue and take 10% of the price shown on the order form. Order TWO or MORE, and take 15% off the prices shown. So if you want a $25 catalogue and a $35 catalogue, they would normally be $60. But, now on sale just $51.00, plus USA shipping of $3.00 per catalogue. (For international postage, email me.) The catalogues are carefully digitally reproduced on high quality coated paper and heavy comb-bound covers. The colors are indistinquishable from the originals. Many collectors feel that these all-color repros are invaluable. Here's your chance to get them at reduced prices. Please note, that I have very limited copies left of the 1927 Conklin, 1937 Chilton and the 1952 Esterbrook. Once they are gone...they are gone! I do not plan on reprinting any of these catalogues, due to cost and time involved. To see what's available and a brief discription of each catalogue, go to: http://members.aol.com/jonr529/catorder.jpg. Have patience, its a large file. For a look at some sample pages go to the same address, but after jonr529/ subsititute the following: For '23 Conklin: conkcat23.jpg, for '27 Conklin: conkcat27.jpg, for '36 Parker: pk36cat1.jpg, and pk36cat2.jpg, for Penoply go to panoply1.jpg and panoply2.jpg. Email me your orders and I will confirm total costs and provide payment instructions. If you order two or more catalogues, I WILL accept Paypal! One catalogue: cash, check or money order only. Please email first, before submitting payment. Thanks for your support! Jon R |

Hi Remco,
this looks like a 1940's Bayard made in aluminum. They turn up in France quite a lot & probably were not exported in any great numbers. They were not imprinted unless for a retailer & were economical as aluminum was not of the same value & interest as in 1910's. Bayard made a wide range of products for a lot of different business's. Commercially of no great value but nevertheless part of European pen history |

Hello all,
Although I realize you get a lot of "What's this" messages, I would like to try. I have been searching the internet for several days now and am still puzzled.
I'll try to descripe the pen in the most detail I can.
It is a all silver(coloured)lever filled fountain pen. The cab has a gold(coloured) "ring". From top to bottom there are stripes of alternatively blank and "waved" lanes.
The clip has "depose" on the inside and the nid says "Oxydable Iridium Pointed".
The clip begins Pelikanlike but has a rectangled ending.
Anyone? |

As of today I have received over $3,000. and requests for about 50 fountain pens, either the Monteverde Invincia or the Pelikan.
To all that have contributed our sincere gratitude, your donations will directly help the charities that were close to Katie.
Most of the pens are now engraved, the memo pads printed by Jimmy Tom are on the way to me, and shipments will start very soon. The Pelikan fountain pen is yet to be advised, be assured, it will be something very nice.

This is Richard's offer to provide you a reason to send in your contribution today to arrive in time for the drawing. Be sure to include a contact number, either e-mail or phone.
Thank you for your generous contributions, it is greatly appreciated and comforting to Katie's family.

Parker Dealers are being REQUIRED to sign a statement saying they will sell the P51 and the new Mosaic at the list price. If they don't sign, they get no pens. Further, if found to be selling below list, Newell Rubberhose..I mean Rubbermaid will no longer provide that dealer with pens. Yes, restraint of trade is illegal, but tell that to the stupid corporate hacks at Rubbermaid. Too bad Parker will fair no better under their new owners than under the razor blade manufacturer! What a shame!! |

What's going to happen? Not much. Parker will sell most if not all
of them. The pipeline is already full with advance orders. Any that
remain will be socked away by the salons and sold later at list or
above. Some dealers who want to get rid of them (the dealers who
depend on volume for survival) will discount them 30-45% in a year or
so if the contract with the factory for that particular model permits.
We are not sure whether the contract stipulates no below-list *sales*
or merely no below-list *advertisements*. In another couple of years
you'll see these pens at pen shows, used, for around half list price.
I predict another big yawner, same as the other Parker LEs -- look
what happened with the Mandarin, Rockwell, Snake, and so on. You can
buy 2 good real 51s for the price of the new imitator, and the former
will hold their value as long as you don't let the family pets or
ankle-biters at them. Probably work better too. Try selling a Snake
or Mandarin or Rockwell at what they went for list when they were
originally shipped (rotsa ruck). WJD.

What's going to happen with the new 51, and Parker's disgusting "no discount" policies? I have a feeling, not much at all. It would be different if the pen were showing more excitement, but so far, it seems to be pretty ho-hum among serious pen people. It's nice, but at $350 maybe a bit overpriced, and since you can get a nice vintage one for less.... Parker seems to think that this is the way to "play with the big boys". They don't realize that in order to get away with acting like this they really need to have a product that everyone wants. I don't know if the new 51 falls into that category! |

A considerable discussion on PenTracer covered the Parker discount subject.
From what people who are aware of court rulings in the US regarding price fixing say, the company may require that advertising lists the MSRP, BUT they cannot prevent the seller from discounting the item.
The blackmail that Parker had the dealers sign is probably invalid.
Wait until October when the pens arrive and see what happens.

I have just come across a copper-coloured Parker 45
It is like the "Flighter" except it seems to have a copper-anodised (?) barrel and cap, with a gold-plated blind cap where the Flighters had black or chrome blind caps.
Made in USA. Any idea how common this model is. I have never seen one like it.
This one is in very good condition, and it seems a shame to use it.

| Parker 51 Discount
|
| |
8/25/2002: Raymond |
|
So I heard John. It seems the manufacturer is ensuring that the pen will be sold at the suggested retail price. It is more than the $350, it is like penlovers are made sure to recognise the image of the pen. Alternately, it is like saying the pen is so good that it can compete with other pens without giving penlovers the discount. I don't know if the modern Duofold was priced like this when it first came out. I was wondering if any other pen was priced like this before. On another thought, I would not feel as depressed if the pen was listed at $500 and sold for a discount price of $350. |

I have it on good authority that each dealer who orders the new 51 will be required to sign a statement that commits them to sell the pen at full retail, no discounts or "give aways" with the pen. How about that! |

I have a beautiful solid copper Thompson Duofold. Medium nib, it's the modern arrow style nib. Of course, since this is an actual button filler, instead of cartridge converter fill, it works perfectly, with none of the skipping that seems to plauge modern Duofolds!
It's also amazingly beautiful, a superbly crafted piece of work, exact to the smallest detail of the original, just in one hundred percent solid copper!
The bad news? It's heavy, as in H-E-A-V-Y. Weighs a ton. On the other hand, if you ever need a field expedient bludgeon, this is the pen for you!
$350, a bargain for a piece of Chris Thompson's work, no matter the material!
Email for pictures, I should have a link ready in a couple of hours.

|

8/23/2002: Len Provisor |
|
I would like to report that in just the first few days since the Katie Hill Fund page has been posted on the Home Page of Pentrace I have received an outpouring of e-mails from friends and contributors.
These messages are from many friends and co-workers of Katie's in the U.S., also from mnay caring individuals world wide, from as far as Australia, Germany, England to mention a few.
To date I have received contributions for over $1,200. and many more donations are on the way.
This is very comforting to Katie's family to know her friends are so kind to make donations in her memory to some of her favorite charitable organizations.
100% of these donations will be dispersed by her family.
For a donation of $50. you may choose a fountain pen from those donated by Jerry Greenberg, one of three styles of Monteverde Invincia, medium steel nib only, or a Pelikan which will be announced shortly.
The cap of the pen will be engraved Katie Hill - Forever our Pen Pal.
In addition to the pen of your choice will be a memo pad of fine quality writing paper and an ink blotter with a recent quotation of Katie's about the value of friendships.
In about two weeks I will make a random drawing among all contributors who may wish to have the nib of their pen custom ground by Richard Binder, famous for his Italic Cursive "noodle".
If you wish to order a pen with a custom shaped nib, please make note on your donations. If you have already sent in your donation, just e-mail me so I'll include your name for the drawing.
Read further details on the Home Page of WWW.PENTRACE.COM
Further updates will be announced soon.
This offer of the Memorial Pen will be limited to the supply of pens donated by Pelikan and Monteverde.
Contributors who are helping to make this Fund possible are :
Chartpak, the U.S. distributor for Pelikan pens
Jerry Greenberg of Monteverde pens
Fountain Pen Hospital - engraving services
Donal Higgins - Pentrace IT services
Richard Binder, Richard's Pens and nib grinder

Hello all!
I've made a couple of changes to the website this week. I've added a links
button, but this is for non-pen-related sites:
http://www.hisnibs.com/links.htm
I came across an interesting article in Science News this week, about
testing
the age of the ink -- as well as the parchment -- of the famous Vinland Map,
which purports to show part of the coast of Canada from approximately
1000 A.D., with some claiming that the map was produced 60 years before
Columbus set sail:
http://www.hisnibs.com/articles.htm
I've also added a large selection of new book links, including a number on
pen & ink drawing, such as:
Drawing in Pen & Ink, and Painting Weathered Buildings in Pen, Ink &
Watercolor.
For the more violent among you, there's the history of Fingertip Firepower:
Pen Guns,
Knives and Bombs, and the slightly more peaceful:
Ornamental Pen Designs & Flourishes.
Please come back frequently to the Books page, as I will be updating it
regularly:

Don't forget to take advantage of the August Special when ordering regular
pens:

He subsequently filled the pen with a black that I've yet to encounter. I did not get to see the make but I think it may have been a self concotion. Now I need to refill and the black's i have pale in comparison. literally and figuritively. |

Two gold filled crown caps for oversize 20's plastic Sheaffer's pencils.
#6 (?) size nib for an oversize 1930's Pencraft fountain pen, made in Libertyville, Ill. It was most likely solid 14K.
A cap for a 1930's standard size Sheaffer's Balance demonstrator in transparent green.
A barrel for a c. 1936 oversize Sheaffer's balance in jade green, in mint to near mint condition. No discoloration.

Decent caps for Esterbrook LJ and SJ pens.
Happy Penning!

Or opinions on the auction in question. In addition to a substantial buyer's premium, and estimated value ranges, it appears as though many items have a reserve. Any discussion on this particular auction would be interesting. |

finally, i have looked the truth square in the eye: this pen is too big for
me to hold in comfort. i know this, because of all my modern pens, it
has been the one i have hardly used, inked maybe three times, and kept
uninked for long periods in between, in a plush velvet pen chest.
160 dollars, shipping and insurance included. i got this NOS directly from
gerd frunske of germany; it is the older version of the big bird,
supposedly higher in quality than the ones available today, with their
reduced retail pricing. the pelikan logo on cap bezel is stamped out of
metal rather than engraved.
no blemishes, or signs of use whatsoever. it is not mint, having been used
gently, but it is near mint.
the pen, in case you have never had or handled one, has a smooth brass
piston, and a wet, wide medium nib that writes very smoothly.

Have also just posted a most unusual Canadian postwar Imperial Vacumatic, with
the cap edge decorated with parallel incised lines.
It seems they were put there to erase the metal content markings; the cap was
re-imprinted just above, with "GOLD FILLED" and "MADE IN CANADA", so perhaps
the original markings were found to be incorrect.

8/18/2002: Maryann and Steve at Penstop |
|
It has been brought to my attention that when trying to make a reservation for the New York City Pen Show, the central booking (800 number) does not have the show listed.
I have just checked with the Central Reservations (800 number) and the block is listed under Penstop rather than NYC Pen Show.
I will try to straighten this out tomorrow when the corporate offices are open for business, but in the meantime anyone trying to make a reservation using the 800 number should ask for PenstopOnline and the NYC Pen Show. If the agent cannot find the block then refer to this number 12920, which is their internal code number.
Sorry for any inconvenience or frustration caused by this. I have also been informed that the block is filling quickly so that anyone who has not made their reservations yet, please do it as soon as possible to confirm the show rate of $149.
Look forward to seeing you all in New York next month. I will be updating the informa
tion on the website over the next week so stop by often for new and exciting postings. This is going to be a great show in a great city.

I got a really good deal on a Montblanc 144 75th 1924 fountain with rose gold nib. However, this means that the nib is slightly bent. The pen still writes beautifully but I would prefer to have the nib fixed or replaced. Does anyone know or have an Idea how much Montblanc with charge in addition to the $55.00 service fee to repair or replace the nib on this 144 size fountain pen?
Thanks,
Shiva |

Hello all!
I've lowered the price on the remaining Sheaffer Legacies I have in stock, to match the low price of the Legacy 2s. The Legacy was Sheaffer's original 'homage' to their PFM (Pen for Men) of the '50s, and differs from the later Legacy 2 iteration in a couple of ways. The two most obvious are that the slip cap on the Legacy has a smooth clutch (whereas the later Legacy 2 has a cap that 'clicks' when closed), and the end of the barrel, which unscrews to release the 'Touchdown' filling mechanism, is angularly cut (as with the original PFM and later Imperials), whereas the later Legacy 2 is rounded. Personally, I lean more to the Legacy as my personal choice, as I prefer the squared-off look and like that it more closely reflects the design elements of the vintage PFM. Also, it's *much* easier to operate the TD filler, as one's fingers gain a sure purchase on the end when unscrewing (if my fingers are at all damp, I've had difficulty unscrewing the TD filler on the super smooth lacquer of the Legacy 2). The 'click', 'no click' cap difference is a toss up to me. I feel more secure with the Legacy 2 in my shirt pocket, yet I like the one-handed ease with which I can remove the Legacy cap for a quick note. I have to give the edge to the Legacy 2 for the more-varied finishes, but as the all-black is my favorite, I'm happy with either model.
The Legacy originally retailed for $375.00, while the Legacy 2 was priced at $275.00. Both are now offered at a sale price of $198.00, and nib sizes are limited to what I have in stock when your order is placed (I only have a few of the new, old-stock Legacies left) -- although you can still take advantage of Sheaffer's free 30-day nib exchange program:

Also on the Sheaffer front, I'm now restocked on everything calligraphic, as well as on the metal Javelins:

Last night, I could and did download the Katie Hill wallpapers, which are hosted by a different provider, to verify that the links were right. This morning, I can't get to the site that hosts my wallapers at all. You are probably experiencing 403 errors (permission denied); that's what I'm seeing.

Cudos to all- especially Bob Johnson, family and crew for putting on such a huge show in D.C.
As a first time exhibitor, I was over-whelmed by the size and sheer excitement of it all.
I would personally like to thank all of the traders, vintage people and other exhibitors who came by my display with smiles, kind words and encouragement. Surely, there must be a special little corner in Heaven for Penlovers where smiles are the norm, the pens don't leak, the ink runs freely and pads are abundant. The best lesson I learned at the pen show is that it is not the pens that make the Pen World so special - its the PEOPLE. |

Well, I stained mine with Waterman's Florida blue, so don't use that! (BTW, does anyone know of a safe way to try to remove that stain, water/409 doesn't do the trick..but a stained pen is better than a broken pen.) Now I have OMAS Triratna in it and it is gorgeous. Also, the OMAS brown ink looks good and hasn't stained mine. It is a cool pen and a unique ink really sets the pen off. |

| The PENguin: A Sale
|
| |
8/15/2002: Rick Propas |
|
To make a long story short, The PENguin never made it to the DC Show, so I have a whole bunch of really great pens just gone up on the website. We now have more than six dozen pens listed.
A couple of Parkers are noteworthy: a very nice first year 75 set in sterling cisele. If anyone wants just the pen (as opposed to the set) I will gladly keep the ballpoint. Also a pristine dimple top 75 cisele in the box. Last but not least, few people realize that Parker USA did make flexible-nibbed Vacumatics. I have a broad stub on a Silver 1939 Vac Major (some would say Slender Maxima, but it’s not). A great pen.
Among the more notable Pelikans are a pristine first series Pelikan 400 in green with a lovely Pelikan-pointed broad nib. I still have the 500 set, which will go now for $400.00, and there are a small handful of less than perfect tortoise 400s that would make great users. Finally there is a small handful of Pelikan 800s—including one in titanium and one W. German marked.
Finally among the "other" pens, there’s a really flexible, funky Swan Leverless, a couple of new Aurora Optimas at used prices, and if someone wants the Watermans 56 Cardinal set for $900.00, it’s theirs.
I’m gonna extend free shipping for this sale.

Hi Everyone,
I have been looking for a particular ballpenn for some time now. It is called lady Jotter.
Made by Parker and sold until 1980.
It is the smaller version of the wellknown jotter ballpenn we have all written with. Looks exactly like the jotter but is only about 11 cm long. The common jotter is 13cm.
Anyone has one and want to sell it or knows where I could find one?
I would like to get hold of one for sentimental reasons.
Thank you in advance

Well, we are digging out from D.C. ever so slowly. Two specials for you while we are just getting back in the swing.
We added Sailor to our line of pens this weekend and I have two 1911 pens in black with music nibs -- these are great stub style nibs that write a nice broad line. The quality of these pens is great and the writing experience is wonderful. I'll have pictures later. We still have our show pricing available on these at $162.
We also picked up some cool pens from Scott Woodside and the gang at Platinum -- the new Neon line. Colors include Green, Rose, Yellow and Blue and they have a pearlescent effect to them. Pens come with a nice fine smooth plated steel nib and a cartridge/converter filling system. These are cool pens and sure to get noticed. Pictures will be available later today/tonight for the curious. Again, we will hold show pricing this week on these beauties at $59.
Finally, my restock on Sonic Blue and Black Cherry arrived today from Private Reserve along with a good supply of Spearmint, which seemed to be a hit at the show as well. Price remains $7 on Private Reserve in all the colors listed on the website. We also have a good supply of red and green Parker Quink in addition to the other colors. Those have yet to make the website, so ask for them via e-mail.
Thanks again to all who came by to visit in D.C. Good to have faces to go with e-mail addresses. And thanks to Jimmy for the picture of me at my table and my father inlaw roaming the show. (That's right, you can see me if you look carefully through Jimmy's photos!)

The OMAS Israel limited edition was produced by Omas in 1998 as a celebration of Israel 50th Jubilee. This particular pen is a prototype model that is gold-plated. Never in retail production, it was meant to show how the solid gold pen would look (only 400 solid gold pens were produced - each had a retail price of $6,000 - I am asking $950 for this pen. The pen is a perfect reproduction of the solid gold model. The barrel has a motif of flames. The blue resin is covered with gold plate. Cap top is decorated with the Star of David inlaid into Blue enamel. Cap band is engraved with English/Hebrew characters. 18 K Medium two tone Gold nib. NO dings, scuffs, scratches - Pen is MINT in every way; never used or inked. No papers; regular OMAS exterior packaging. The pen has a lustrous shine, and is perfect in every way. Payment by Paypal, money order, etc. Personal check may need to clear first. Two Day Fedex shipping anywhere in the U.S. for $15.00; international shipping a bit more.

| Update: The Katie Hill Memorial Pen
|
| |
8/13/2002: Len Provisor |
|
Katie Hill was a unique person as anyone would soon realize when meeting her or receiving her letters. She was a Pentrace friend and also with many others in the fountain pen community.
Katie was most generous to many causes to aid children and others in her community.
As a result we will have a Katie Hill Memorial Pen to perpetuate her name and provide benefit to the causes she cared about.
The pens are generously donated by Chartpak/Pelikan, which was Katie's pen of choice.
The model of pen and price will be announced very soon.
The pen will have an appropriate engraving, a memo pad with one of her sensitive quotations, and other contents will be included also.
100% of the proceeds of the sale of this pen will be given to her family for contribution to the charities of their choice, which will be announced shortly.
I will make another annoucement as soon as all details are finalized as to price and ordering information.
Just last week she wrote a snail mail to a friend :
"My great interest in life is the
nurturing and care of my relationships
with others.... to enjoy the happiness
that caring for others can bring. Isn't
our connection to others the real
foundation of our well being?"
(written with her favorite pen, the Pelikan 1000).
Katie Hill will be long remembered and an inspiration to many.

the heaviest pen in the 50 dollar range is
without doubt dani-trio's phantas snake.
i bought one a while back, because it
coincided with the closing of a parker
vintage snake on ebay that i could not
afford, so i made it up with a creepy
crawly for one half percent of the parker
snake's price. the pen's mass is 72
grams, and it is the weight of three
to five typical pens put together. surprising
thing is, with cap posted, you feel the
heft but not the weight. it is one nice pen! |

8/12/2002: Cliff Harrington |

According to the Washington Post, Katie Lynn Hill, a lawyer from Seattle, was found shot to death late Friday night in a schoolyard near the Takoma Metro Station in Northwest D.C. According to the Post, Ms. Hill had traveled to D.C. to attend the D.C. Pen Show. She was apparently on the way to the home of relatives, where she had made arrangements to spend the night. Robbbery is believed to be the motive of the killing.
This is very sad news indeed. I know I have met several pen collectors from the Seattle area, but don't recall having met Ms. Hill. In any event, the loss of any pen hobbyist is particulary troubling given the relatively small size of our hobby. With so many attendees traveling long distances to attend the D.C. show, as well as the other pen shows around the world, we should be thankful that such losses are not more common.

While I'm too new to even consider myself a fledgling collector, I really enjoy the Montblanc line and happened to find a new Montblanc Solitare Anniversary Limited Edition. I think it's the most elegant pen I've ever ran across! Silver, rose-gold, a mother of pearl on top, and a diamond, too! I don't usually buy pens to leave in the box in a drawer, but this one is sure a looker, so I bought it! I'll likely give some thought before I ink it, though! We're looking forward to our next pen show and meeting some more fine folks! |
| Oversize Balance section

HELP!! I bought a beautiful, mint (with stickers) Oversize balance at the DC show yesterday. Got home this evening, opened the box, and the section had cracks running all through it (they weren't there last night!). It crumbled in my hand. AARGH!!! I don't know if it was the heat in the car or what that caused it to happen. Talk about a sick, sinking feeling! Now the big question - does ANYONE have a visualated section for an oversize Balance that they'd be willing to sell? The insert with the nib on this one came out, so all that I need is the section. |

The Expert II is a medium-sized pen
of moderate weight. Send an email
to Chun Lee at swisherpens (see
their web site for email addresses,
I can't remember them) and ask him
what pens he'd recommend as being
large and heavy, then with the
supplied list you can peruse them on the swisherpens web site. Swisherpens is tops in my book. WJD. |

I'm looking to buy a large, heavy weight fountain pen. From what I've read, the Waterman Expert II appears to fit the bill and is in my price range (don't want to spend more than $150 US). Does anyone have experience with this pen, or an alternative suggestion? I'm new to fountain pens and would appreciate any advice. |

Best thing to do would be to get a
copy of Frank Dubiel's repair book.
Many online pen shops have it:
Pendemonium, Swisherpens,
Fountainpenhospital. Most everything
you'll need to know as well as the
answers to questions you may not have
thought of asking will be in there.
You will begin with a simple soak in
a glass of cool water for a day to
loosen any crud, then flushing the
pen a few times until the water
comes out almost clear, then filling
with a QUALITY ink (that means
Sheaffer Skrip or Parker Quink).
Some minor surgery may be required
if the pen was put away improperly.

Margaret,
If I was going to suggest a reasonably priced everday pen I would think that there are quite a few that would fit the bill.
I might suggest that you give your husband a gift certificate to a well stocked pen store so that he can go out and try pens out for himself, then he will find a pen that he is truly comfortable with. Everyone has their own preference for the type of pen they write with, some like large pens, some like pens that are cigarette thin.
He might also enjoy the ooportunity to play with a variety of pens before he makes a selection.
If you want any further ideas e-mail me and I'll try to help you further. |

I went home on vacation last week and was helping my mom clean out some of my dad's things, and I found his Parker 51. It even has his name engraved on the barrel. I suppose its about 40 years old. It has the aerometric filler. I understand this is a fairly common pen but a very nice one. Since I really know nothing about fountain pen restoration, how do I go about cleaning this pen so I can start using it again? Should I take it to a pen repair shop? How much is it worth? |

most any modern pen today (parker, sheaffer,
waterman, to name a few) uses cartridges
or convertors to hold the ink. this
eliminates the mess one would have
due to careless filling. if the pen is
cleaned thoroughly after filling, by
wicking off the excess ink from the feed,
no pen, vintage or modern, will leak into the cap,
hence onto the fingers. on the other hand,
modern pens, being cartridge/convertor
operated, also let go of their ink supply
in a stingy manner, so that even sloppy filling
practices won't result in inky fingers for the most part. |

| His Nibs.com update
|

8/7/2002: Norman Haase |
|
Hello all!
I've opened a new 'Book' section on the website which you might like to take a look at, as it lists a couple of items that I hadn't come across before (including a song entitled 'Fountain Pen' on a CD entitled 'Romantic Letter' ), as well a couple of works of fiction with a fountain pen theme. I don't actually stock these myself, but have provided links to a webstore called 'The Gift Lift' which offers many of them at a discount, and from which I've made my own purchases (as I receive a small commission for orders placed through my site, don't be shy -- order multiple copies of each!).
The link to my new page is: http://www.hisnibs.com/books.htm, and if you follow the links to the books themselves, you can return to His Nibs.com by just clicking on the 'Back to Main Site' button, underneath the Shopping cart on the lower left.
Although all of the Sheaffer Balance II crimson roller balls sold out this weekend during the start of my 50%-off clearance sale, I still have some of the cobalt, green, blue and black ones
in stock, and would like to clear them out of inventory. Hence, the sale will continue until end-of-day on Sunday, the 11th, if necessary. The sale does *not* extend to the Amber Glow
*fountain pens* that I also stock. Also, these sale pens are not eligible
for the Monthly Special.
So, the Cobalt Glow , which is regularly priced at $97.50,
is now $48.75. The black, blue or green, which regularly sell for $75.00,
are now only $37.50.
As I only have a very limited stock of these, the first emails with a firm
commitment prevail:

The ink sale also continues for both Doctor blue/black and all of the Private
Reserve colors:

I have two pens for sale
1. Waterman #12 eyedropper, Canadian, BCHR. The pen is similar to the
one shown on the bottom right of page 47 in the F & S book, though it is
a #12, not a #14. The pen has good imprints and is in working
condition. The gold bands are in excellent condition. The major flaw
is that the cap is oxidized relative to the barrel. The oxidization on
the cap not completely even, but everything possible was done to clean
it up. Price: $50.00.
2. Waterman #5 black pastic, Canadian. This pen is in excellent
condition, fully resotored. Perfect imprints throughout. No brassing
as far as I can tell. The only flaws that I can see is that the nib is
a "brown" but the disk on the bottom of the barrel appears red. Also,
on the very top of the cap, someone engraved a 'T', which can't be
rubbed out any further than it has been. Price $80.00.
Terms: I will hold the check for 5 working days upon receipt of the
pen(s). If not completely happy, I'll return the check.

| Scratchy Nibs
|

8/2/2002: Stephen Lam |

2000 grit dry/wet paper is fine. Wetting the nib with water or ink while working on polishing paper is essential. The amount of pressure to apply is important. You will have to learn from experience. I start by writing large 8s, stopping after writing say half a dozen, then rinsing the nib in water to remove any residue of the operation before testing it on writing paper. The last step is important because minute particulars coming off the nib or the paper might stick to the tip after the polish, making it scratchier than it really is and you would run the risk of over-polishing. Examine the tip with a loupe after each polish to see whether there is any change and check alignment. Some tips might be damaged beyond polishing. In that case, if the nib is of value, consider retipping. Of course, if you are new to this, don't start with your Patrician or Watermans No.10 nib. Perfect your skills on less important samples. |

nib polishing/ adjusting requires first
and foremost a 10X loupe, to examine
tine alignment. if tines are perfectly
aligned, then the fault lies with sharp
edge near the slit. 2000 grit wetdry
works ONLY with experience. practice on cheap pens first. use with ink
in the pen, so there is always some form
of lubrication. polish or smoothen in
very small motions, with frequent trying
out on paper, plus loupe inspection. and of course,
before you do any of these, get 'da book'
by frank dubiel. it tells all the above, and
much more. |

I had heard about using 2000 or 1500 grit wet /dry sandpaper to smooth a scratchy nib. One pen I tried it on is great. The other one I think I destroyed. I am not anxious to try this at home again. Can someone enlighten me. Is there a suggested repair for the nib I "fixed".Was the sandpaper a bad tip. Thanks. |

By the time of the show the vintage and model images of the DC-3 will be up on my website WWW.INKBLOTTERS.COM - go there NOW and turn your speakers on for a surprise. Thank you Dean. I saw all the pens that Miroslav Tischler is bringing to the show, Miro is author of PENKALA book. If you like vintage Pelikan and MontBlanc, you want to see him early on Thurs. when he arrives. Please try to avoid starting a feeding frenzy, we don't want to scare him away, but has some nice stuff. PENSTOPs Maryann and Steve Zucker have a new load of very nice vintage pens in their usual pristine condition, be sure to visit their display of new and vintage treasures. PRIVATE RESERVE INKS has a surprise for visitors and buyers at any dealers carrying PR inks. Stop "buy" for a free surprise gift. Primary dealers are Ink Palette and Pendemonium. PENTRACERS be sure to pick up your yellow Snailee badges at the door or my table. Only 6 DAYS to pen heaven. BTW, I like vintage ink blotters. Bring me ink blotters, recent events effecting my .00000401K have changed my pen show budget. |
| Vintage pen shops in Chicago
|
| |

There aren't any. Actually there is one shop, but pens are priced accordingly, at full retail or more. If you feel lucky and want to hit some antique shops, the best inner city route is Belmont Ave. on the north side from about Halsted west to Western Ave. and a few other malls in the area that usually have some pens.
If you are downtown, there are a few new pen stores only, no vintage. Let me know where you will be in Chicago, I can give you more info. |

Hi. I'm going to be in Chicago at the end of this month (I picked the wrong month, I know). I'm wondering if there are any pen shops that carry vintage pens that I should know about/check out? I've never been to Chicago; I appreciate any pen advice. Thanks. |

I meant "cheap in the hand," not "sheap in the hand" (don't want to lead you to believe the pen goes off on its own to do weird things with the farm stock). WJD |

If you mean the pen was *manufactured* not too long ago, then it is the Sheaffer Nostalgia, made in the late '70s as far as I can recall. Very light weight, nib is sort of bouncy but not all that smooth, pen feels sheap in the hand. Silver filigree over shiny black plastic. Honestly I have no idea what the pen is worth since I've never seen one up for sale. On a pen board I'd guess you could get $300-400 for it, maybe more on an auction site. When the pen was new the list price was somewhere between $500 and $700 I think. An amazingly-overpriced pen for what it was, but as usual P.T.Barnum and H.L.Mencken were right. Hope this helps.
