I've received atleast six emails this week from someone in Indonesia trying to buy expensive pens via credit card. For those of you that are unaware, this country has the highest rate of credit card fraud. Check with your merchant banks before shipping to anyone in this country. |

Hello Penlovers,
I am a watch collector but know nothing about pens. I recently received 3 pens on a watch deal. They are very high-end Montblancs (Medici, Golden Dragon and Semiramis).
Where do I sell them? I have sold many watches on eBay but I also know that the good stuff sells on TimeZone and Watchnet.
Any thoughts much appreciated.

| Philosophers and Pens

|
Hello everyone! I was wondering if any of you know about the various types of pens philosophers of note have used. I was just thinking that philosophy has to be something that would lend itself to fountain pen usage. Of course I realize that many "famous" philosophers, such as Immanuel Kant and Rene Descartes, were before the time of the fountain pen...but I bet they used something interesting. But, then again, what is interesting? |

Here's a first! I was reading The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie (I can highly recommend this, if you like British Humor, he's not just a funny guy when acting, he's pretty amusing when behind a keyboard as well), and in one line, he specifically refers to a character's pen as a Parker Duofold. Nice youch, even if I suspect he was refering to the modern version.... |

Yes, I do look for pens used in movies and also in Presidential bill signing ceremonies. In the movie, The Firm, you can see Tom Cruise all dressed up like an attorney and using a blue Parker Duofold Centennial ball pen (clickable version). There is this AFLAC commerercial in which a fountain pen is used to sign something. I keep looking at that commercial to see if I can recognize that kind of pen. Parker has rich history in having its pens used in the signature of treaties and peace agreements. When the President signs something, I try to catch the kind of pen he is using and will sometimes switch on anothre channel to catch it in another perspective if I missed the sighting. |

Hi:
My father left me a ball-pen and pencil set that I remember from my early days.
The name on the clip is "Redipoint" and the barrels are black laquer with a beautiful cutout inlaid pattern in silver or white metal. The metal is worn with use, but I do not see a sub-metal (such as copper).
The caps are rather tacky white metal and my first impression is that they didn't match the workmanship of the barrel.
Questions: 1. Is the metal silver or steel
2. Can I get this pen repolished or should I keep it "used"
3. Any history or valuation information? I'm not going to sell, loved them since I was three...
Any information would be appreciated.

| Shaeffer pens

My partner had a gold dot Shaeffer pen that she had in Canada. It needed a repair and a pen shop in Vancouver provided an address at which it could be repaired. that was over 2 months ago, and nothing has been heard from them. The address in penlovers section is in New York, while the Vancouver pen shop insisted that the BIC outfit in Ontario was the only place that could repair the pen.
Does anyone have a web or email address for this outfit? Web searches largely turn up advertising outfits, and the BIC sites are mainly advertising as well.
Thanks

It IS a bit sad, when you get to the point that it's pens, pens, pens, all day long. Watch a movie? You ain't gonna enjoy the thing, you're looking to see if the pens used fit in. Unless it's an old film, in which case, you're looking to see the "good ones" from days gone by, like the Skyline in Sabrina, or the ornate Desk set in (I think) Citizen Kane. You can find yourself looking at a perfect stranger and thinking to yourself "He looks like a Duofold Centennial kind of guy" or "Definitely a MB ball point". These are the more subtle effects, there's also the sudden start and look of nausea if someone offers you a Bic to sign something. |
| Sheaffer Radite and Basil
|
| |
8/29/2001: Bruce |
|
OK, if Bill R can expose his pen-centric mind, I can do the same. Last weekend my wife made a batch of homemade pesto from fresh basil and olive oil. Last night she scooped out a big spoonful into the frying pan and I'll be damned if the colors didn't exactly match the coloring of an early Sheaffer Green Radite pen. Not only that, but the pesto that was on the top of the jar (and exposed to air) was dark, like the discolored pens, while the fresher pesto was like a non-discolored pen. Does anyone know if the Sheaffers were pesto eaters in the 20's. Is there an component of basil in the original material? I see a research project coming up... |

OK, not getting enough sleep, I guess, or maybe it was those pints of Boddingtons last night......
But anyway, we had a genuine pen dream in the wee hours of the AM!
I was wandering through an antique shop, one of those ones set up in a regular house, so there were a bunch of small rooms, with the stuff set up all over the place. Now I was shopping with a bunch of folks, Anna was there, and more importantly, the Chaikins of Bellingham. I say more importantly, because, sneaky male types that we are, Arvin and I kept rushing ahead of everyone else, to be the first ones into the next room, so we could get first crack at all the pens.
The only room that had any pens was a bedroom, where I came up with the following haul:
A lever fill LeBouf in a sort of mottled brown celluloid, with a badly pitted and brassed clip, priced at $350, and an elaborate price tag, explaining how they arrived at that price, based upon the "book". I passed on this one, even in a dream I'm not an idiot.....
Arvin had a handful of pens, including a mint Chilton in Jade Green.
The only pen I grabbed was.... An OS Doric, but it was a sterling silver Doric. All marked correctly, and all, I checked, but in silver. Silver section, too, like on an early Wahl overlay. It had the later style non-rollerball clip, though. And, of course it wasn't marked as to price.
The rest of the dream, until interrupted by the arrival of the munchkin, was spent in carrying this pen through the shop, trying to find the dealer, to see what they wanted for "this old ink pen".
I don't even want to THINK about what this dream says about me. Other than that I like Dorics, silver pens, and that I'm not afraid to shove in ahead of my fellow collectors when shopping. |

| Wahl Gold Seals
|
| |
8/25/2001: Lynn Brant |
|
There were two questions asked a week ago about Wahl Gold Seals that still haven't had a response... so I'll respond. First was one that asked why some gold seal pens don't have gold seals. Hmmm. Not sure what that means because gold seal pens do have gold seals that's why they are called... you get it. Now, the gold seals can come off in which case you'll see a small indentation in the plastic where it used to be (they can be replaced too). The only other gold seal pens I can think of that don't have a "gold" seal are those Doric colors where the trim and seal are silver colored. These are sometimes called silver seals, but they are, in fact, still gold seal models. The second question asked about gold seals with the hole punched in them. The gold seal indicated the pen was guaranteed for life and the seal was the proof of that. Gold seal pens also had gold seal nibs, although some could be had with adjustable nibs as an option. But, and here's the answer, when the factory had an excess of gold seal pens they often shipped them out with Warranted nibs in which case the lifetime guarantee was void. The punch in the seal indicated this voiding. You may see pens with gold seal nibs and punched seals, but those are the result of someone adding the gold seal nib after the fact to a pen with a punched seal. |

| Sheaffer Balance in marbled colors
|
| |
8/25/2001: Michael R. |
|
Please could everybody owning a marbled vintage Sheaffer Balance (e.g. pearl and black, grey pearl and black or red veined and especially marine green and black marbled!)check on the body and cap material if the pen's cap and barrel is made from a solid block or if it was made from a wrapped and fused (glued) together sheet of plastic.
If it was made from a solid block, there should be no interruptions in the pens pattern.
If it was made from a rolled sheet of celluloid (like the newer after 1937 striped models) there is a line where the plastic was fused together, interrupting the marbel pattern. This line goes straight from the end of the barrel to the cap (often the cap cracks below the cap band where the material is fused together!).
I'm asking because I have a marine green model made from a solid block and one whích is made from a sheet and wondered if marbled (older) Balance were commonly produced this way or from which year on.
Many thank's in advanve for you help.

well, you cannot go wrong with plain old
tap water. attempt to suck in water with repeated squeezings. if
the water is not drawn up, then the pen may
need to be taken apart and cleaned. if the
pen is not precious in any special way, you may
want to get dubiel's da book from pendemonium.com
and try doing this yourself. what is more likely,
though, is that old ink will get dissolved and the pen
will begin to write. after clear water comes
out with repeated squeezes, you may
consider the pen 'restored' and fill it with
the ink you like. if all fails, there are of
course plenty of repair people who will
recondition it for a fee. but initial forays
with water (it is summer folks, bring out the
hoses!) will not damage the pen any, IMO. |

Hello!
I recently acquired a Parker 51 (via eBay) and was wondering what advice I might be given regarding rehabilitating the pen. From what I can see, it has not been filled for some time, but the sac still looks and feels pliant and intact. What's the best course of action to take in such a situation? Go ahead and see if I can refill it now? Or should I attempt to "clean" the pen/sac? If so, what's the best way to clean a pen?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! |

Not to worry, Will. Most celluloid pens still have plenty of life left in 'em. Tho I am not so certain about some of the new-made celluloid pens, funny enough. I hear that some of the old time curing techniques have been lost, or take too much time nowadays.
Like all the problems (pretty well hushed up so far) with the casein Conway Stewarts, caps shrinking after a few months and the rings falling off.
If you are in a hurry to see your celluloid pens go, though, all it takes is a match! You can do the same by overenthusiastic buffing too (remember the repairman in Beverly Hills working out of his house who set a Deco Band on fire that way?). |

Alan,
In response to your query about Silver Eagle (posted on the 8th -- I'm *way* behind on my reading ), no, they're no longer in business. I called them about 3 months ago to inquire about carrying their line on my website (their site was still up at that point), and they informed me that they had stopped producing the pens.

Hello, I just lost my favorite
Waterman pen. Being that it was a
gift, I'm not sure of the name or
style of the pen. I'm hoping someone
can help me. The pen was a silver,
ballpoint pen with a pointed clip at
the end. The top part had a flat
surface that you could click with
your thumb and that would bring the
ballpoint. Toward the bottom (the
ballpoint) where thumb and index
finger held the pen, was black
rubber with little circular indenta-
tions for a better grip. I hope the
description is clear. If anyone has
any additional questions, please
feel free to email me.
If you know where it can be pur-
chased and can give me the name of
the style or interested in selling,
I'm anxious to get this pen back as
soon as possible.
Thank you for your time and
cooperation.

Seems like ages, but it was only a couple of months ago that I opened
an internet storefront. Several of you visited it and gave me good
feedback, most particularly those of you who bought items and
encountered an unwieldy PayPal process. I've just finally gotten
around to trying a solution. You will now find a PayPal "shopping
cart" to use for checking out. I don't have any new pens up on the
site yet, but the ones that are there have been reduced. (The Lady Patrician is a steal!) I'll get new
ones up as soon as I can get some good pictures made--and I know some of the pictures there aren't the clearest, so I'll be replacing them, too. I'll also be
adding some fountain pen ads--my grand plans for getting all these
framed and put up in my office hasn't happened yet, so I guess I'll
move a few along. Here's the link, and if there are any problems or
questions, just give a holler! http://shop.auctionwatch.com/dalicen

Kudos to steve zucker for eloquent post. The NYC penshow is evolving into something...impressive, to say the least. Truly, many of us had doubts the numbers could work out to let such a show occur in first place. That it will be in nice hotel and well attended is just great. And, i wholeheartedly agree with steve's more philosophic points. As a poorly organized person, who does have a table at this upcoming show, i have yet to even finish the paperwork steve sent me. But, i will happily dig up a nice little pen- probably something in stripes- for the show. While i think we mite not have quite the level of pen in this show that could be found in the super auctions of the NJ show run by Berliner et al, this new auction is for quite a good cause. Best luck steve and maryann. David |

So far I have avoided this discussion but I can no longer remain silent.
First let me state that I feel that someone who hides behind a posting without a name or email address is of little character and not enough of a person to acknowledge themselves as the writer. At that point I ask myself is it that they feel ashamed of what they have written or of themselves?
Secondly, as for Len and Shelly Provisor, they have been, currently are and always will be friends of ours. Len has always attempted to help anyone and everyone in the pen community. If anyone took the time to check the New York Pen Show auction catalogue they would have noticed that Len is already a donor. Of this we are greatly appreciative.
Next to the posting in regard to Dean Tweeddale, the whole point of what he wrote was not the dollar amount. Dean and Kelly have been, are currently and always will be friends of ours, as well as donors to the auction. Even with this friendship we were not aware of Dean and Kelly’s loss until now. I honestly do not know if I could have written about this tragic loss in such an open manner.
Now on to Allan Gross. He wrote a post to make people aware of the charity auction. Just happens that it is for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It seems that children’s’ charities tug a little deeper at the heart of some of us. We all have children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren etc. Get the point! The best someone can come up with is the excess of apostrophes. Allan and Lillian Gross have been, are currently and will always be friends of ours. To further set the record straight, Allan is a licensed auctioneer who has volunteered to conduct this charity auction. That means hours of effort before the auction, conducting the auction gratis, plus closing down his table at the show to set up the auction. Also Allan is a donor and his spearheaded the donation drive.
Maryann and myself are very fortunate to count these people along with many other people in the pen community as our friends. Take a peek at the auction catalogue in its infancy. Notice the donors, pen manufacturers, dealers, new and vintage pen collectors, as well as people outside the pen community.
Famous restaurants in New York City with no vested interest in pens have come forward. They never asked what I contributed, or questioned my grammar, or asked what the total amount might be. All they know is that it is an auction to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Let’s keep this in proper prospective. For what it is worth this is a Pen Show with an auction that has earmarked all the proceeds to a charity. We all have our favorite charities be it local, or international. Some appeal to more people than others. Hopefully the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will receive a generous contribution not from the New York City Pen Show, but from the pen community and its friends and supporters. |

A nice Patrician donation to the NYC Pen Show auction would fetch a tidy sum, wouldn't you agree?
Since I only have one which I prefer to keep, a real nice minty Turquoise set, I think I'll choose one of my nicer double jewel Parker "51" pens. Not a less desireable one with maybe a "slight ding", but a good one that would fetch a good price, a good one that I am proud of, a good one you would want to bid for, a good one just like the one you are going to donate, also. Maybe I should donate the 1949 first production "51" Flighter, to match the Parker "51" Beechcraft model I already donated. That's a good idea, I think. What's your opinion, which one should it be? BTW, what are you donating? |

What better feeling in the world can any person have than helping a child? Listen to what Dean Tweeddale has said, and consider that Maryann and Steve Zucker have created a Pen Show when many said it could not be done. This will be a major event in pen show history, way beyond any boundaries in the past, and the expense is 100% on their shoulders. Considering this, their auction with every dollar to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation places laurels upon the Zuckers. Even if you have donated already, dig deeper. I assure you, you will have a satisfaction greater than any one pen sale you could ever make. |

George,
You're missing the point here, George. The point isn't whether or not the NYC show auction wil generate $30K. It's that whatever the gross is, it goes to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, so if you have something you can donate to help, why not do it? |
| pen show auctions
|
| |

Pen show organisers cannot be making that much on their auctions. At a commission rate of 10%, $300.000 of pens would have to be hammered down to generate $30K of gross profit. I cannot think of any pen show auctions in recent years that came anywhere near that $300K figure. That would require 300 lots sold at an average of $1000, or, more realistically, 600 lots at an average of $500. Further adjustments would reduce the net profit all the more: auction expenses, and discounted or waived commissions on lots belonging to show organisers. |

Hi fellow Penlovers,
I have a different perspective than most folks on the subject of donation to the New York Pen Show auction. After the DC Show I was lucky enough to have dinner and conversation with Maryann and Steve Zucker. They have been working to get the NYC show organized and off the ground for 7 or 8 months now. Not an easy task, regardless of which show it is. Putting a show on is not a cakewalk for any of the pen show organizers whether it is LA, Chicago, DC, Miami, Columbus, Houston, New York, Detroit, or any of the others I may have missed. These folks all work hard to put the shows together and most likely experience lots of stress along the way. Those that hold auctions, seminars, and other activities have even more work piled on their shoulders. Maryann and Steve have decided to make the NYC shows auction an auction for charity. Not a bad thing as I’ve heard that some of the pen show auctions can bring in $30k to the show organizers (yes that is hearsay, so don’t quote me). The charity, Juvenile Diabetes, will be grateful for any donations despite the amount. Yes this, I believe, is a first for a pen show and in the pen community to have the proceeds from an auction to go to charity. Think about it a simple donation has never hurt anyone, but yet could really help those in need. We have two children; the first took her last breath in this world, at Children’s Hospital in my wife’s arms. She left us before she could say Dada yet I can still see her eyes watching me as I rocked her to sleep. The second is a 5yr old little princess that I get to hold, laugh, and play with and tell her I love her any chance I get. So take a look at your kids tonight or at their pictures if they are out on their own. Is a $50, $100, or $150 pen that big of a deal? I know that there must be one in your trays of pens that hasn’t sold in the last year. Maybe it’s time to rotate the stock and this auction for charity could be a great way to do just that. Think about it…..
Another quick note, the DC show was great! I’m getting photos from three sources so be watching for a full review soon. We’ve also just added another collection to the Pen Collections, 30+ Chilton pens take a moment and check them out. Dean Tweeddale

For those of you that remember, I'm the dealer that was burglarized after the Miami show last month. Many of you responded in a generous way, offering assistance, for which my wife Lil and I are very greatful. What most of you don't know is that I'm very much involved with my good friends the Zuckers, in putting on the New York Pen Show Auction for Juvenile Diabetes. Unfortunately the vintage pen community has not been very supportive in donating items and we only have a few weeks left. For those of you that are lucky enough to have normal, healthly children and grandchildren, I hope you can find it in your heart to send something to the Zuckers and help some children that aren't as lucky as yours. Since ALL PROCEEDS go to this worthy charity, you donation is 100% tax deductible. Most of these children start their day with needles, medication and special diets, PLEASE do something to help put an end to this now. For those of you who offered me assistance, this is how I ask you to help me. PLEASE contact Steve and Maryanne at 718-434-3713, or through the penstop website. Thanks Allen |

Most collectors would surely be pleased just to possess , if only for a short time, a pen which they consider beautiful or desirable. Life is too short to worry about what may or may not happen to something. Also these days you can buy celluloid stabilizer, so there really is no excuse to deny yourself a beautiful vintage celluloid pen , if you want one. |

Can anyone think of another area in collecting ( beside film ) where a collector would willingly part with maybe thousands of dollars for items that are literally self-destructing ? The idea that it would be desirable to buy a Wahl Doric (except black) or a LeBeouf or 100 year pen or others & then sit around waiting for the inevitable molecular breakdown of the unstable celulloid strikes me as particularly masochistic. |

Parker 51 Mk II & Mk III can easily be recognised by their blunt ends. The caps are 61 shape, with in the case of Mk III, a metal stud jewel. The barrel thread on the Mk III is course, whereas the Mk II is a similar fine thread to Mk I. There are many other differences which I hope to highlight on my website in the near future thanks to the efforts of an avid Australian researcher/collector/graphic artist. In the meantime, there are a few illustrated for sale on my website www.vintagepens.com.au including a Turquoise Mk III. |

Mark I was an alternate name for the Aerometric pens.
Mark II (New Style) is basically a slimmed down version of the old Aerometric. The barrel end looks more like a 61 and the cap is the same as a 61.
Cosmetically the Mark III was the same as the Mark II. Slight update on parts.

I have recently seen listings on the e place (as well as other locations) that refer to "Parker 51 Mark II, Mark III", etc.
These designations are not a Parker Pen Co. reference, according to a man I spoke with who has sold 51's since they first were introduced.
Does anyone know how these designations began and what exactly they refer to? Thanks for sharing your knowledge. John Maloney |

I recently saw a Wahl Gold Seal for sale. I really liked it and was going to purchase it untill I noticed somthing. There was a hole through the "gold seal", like one of the usuall holes in the cap of a fountain pen but right through the "gold seal". Is this normal? Do some gold seal pens come like this?
THANK YOU!!!

Hi All,
Just wanted to send a short note in recognition of outstanding service. I ordered some Herbin ink from Anna and Martin last week (with a lot of help in finding the "right" shades) and it arrived today. Wonderful colors and EXACTLY what I was hoping for. The transaction couldn't have been any smoother. E-mails answered promptly, etc. I would gladly do business with them in the future and I highly recommend them to anybody on any side of the pond.

I've recently been given an S.T. Dupont ballpoint as a gift. I'm looking
to sell it, as I have no use for such a fine piece of calligraphic equipment. It is much
too beautiful to be of any good for me. However I have not been able to find a model
anywhere that can match the pen I have. The outer box reads "Ligne Grain D'Orge"
Inside the box is a gurantee card, and 2 other booklets, as well as a sticker of some sort
with a serial number. It appears to be silver plated, and of course has S.T. Dupont carved
around a band in the middle. It isn't a bulky pen, it is slim and sleek, with a kneaded
pattern running down the sides. I'm describing this in hopes someone can help me identify
it's lineage, and a fair asking price. Your help is greatly appreciated. |

| Re: Parker selection advice? (Michael) |
| |
8/9/2001: Richard |
|
The following is a CURSORY OVERVIEW; please don't take it as an
all-inclusive or even compendious. (I'm not a Parkerista, and I have doubtless missed
something that a Parkerista would consider important.) 1) Model numbers mean relatively
little. The 51 is so named because its development concluded in 1939, Parker's 51st year
in business. 2) You tell whether the nib is fine or medium by knowing how big it should
look to the eye. Failing that, if it's not explicitly sold as something other than a fine,
it's most likely a fine; that was by far the most popular size. 3) Nibs are
interchangeable in some, but not all, Parker models. E.g, 51, 51 Special, 61, and 21 Super
are physically interchangeable, but 51 Special and 21 Super are steel, not gold. This
doesn't mean they won't write as well or last as long, but gold has a certain cachet. You
can locate a nib from dealers like David Nishimura and John Mottishaw. A fine gold nib for
a 51, bought from a dealer, will set you back about $40; you're often better off buying a
cosmetically poor 51 and having the nib swapped. 4) Any of the models using the 51-style
nib will generally (but not always) outperform any of the models using a generically
ordinary nib, such as the 21. It's an individual thing; a really good 21 can be much
better to use than a poorly-tuned 51. 5) Parker's best and most reliable filling system is
the aerometric system that appears on 51s made after 1948, on 51 Specials, on 21s and 21
Supers, and on some later-model 61s. Avoid capillary-filler 61s; they're great pens, but
they do need a little more babying than aeros. LAST WORD OF ADVICE: Buy from a reputable
dealer who will guarantee his work, rather than eBay. You will pay more, but you will get
a pen that is reconditioned and tuned. Buy from eBay and you risk getting junk, even from
sellers who claim their stuff is restored. (I know of one seller whose
"restoration" regimen appears to consist of flushing out the pen with water.
Period.) |

8/9/2001: Michael R. |
|
I have a couple of original selling trays for sell: 8 Cross trays, dark
green plastic with golden print "CROSS since 1848", with light beige fake
velvet. Each tray holds 15 pens. Trays have been used in store and show normal wear on the
velvet interior where pens have been placed and some might have the one or another ink
stain from a not retraced ballpoint. 2 Waterman trays, blue cardboard with white fake
velvet interior with golden "WATERMAN Paris" lettering, holds 12 pens each.
Those trays seem unused and might only show very minor war on the cardboard edges. 1white
plastic Diplomat tray with grey fake velvet interior with white lettering "Diplomat
Classic Collection". Tray holds four pens horizontally and two (of different size)
vertical with a slight angle. Tray looks unused. 1 dark grey plastic Rotring tray with
light grey fake velvet interior for 7 pens in vertical position and additional space for
one pen displayed with its cap off beside the others (extra space for the cap). Has
"Rotring the write way" on it in red and white letters. If you're inrersted in
one of these items or have questions please mail or make an offer to me. For images mail
also! Thank you for looking Michael |

| custom made titanium fountain pens using Pelikan

|
I have something special to show (and sell) at the DC Pen Show this
weekend -- custom made fountain pens and roller ball pen with the cap and barrel made of
titanium and using Pelikan components. The pens are crafted by Grayson Tighe, a Canadian
artisan & metal worker who makes custom knives and pens. The pens use the filling
mechanism, nib, feed section, clip and trim of a Pelikan 800. The caps & barrels are
made of titanium polished with a method developed by Grayson. The cap and/or barrel can be
anodized in one of several colors if desired. One of the pens I'll have at the show has an
anodized cap in a very interesting iridescent blue. I also have a titanium roller ball pen
which uses Pelikan trim, section and refill. Grayson is very skilled and he puts a great
deal of effort into these pens, and it shows. Stop by my table, say "Hello", and
enjoy the fruits of Grayson's art and skill. Richard Pensations |

| FS: Mottishaw M800 FLEX EF nib |
| |
8/8/2001: MT |
|
Just got five new nibs from Mottishaw. (He can confirm this.) Four
italics and one EF Flex nib. Found out immediately that italics are still my heart's
desire so I'm selling the EF Flex nib assembly for the Pelikan M800. This is ready to be
screwed into the M800 body, a 10 second operation. This is just the nib assembly and is
INCREDIBLY responsive and yet offer good tactile feedback. It is not a limp noodle of a
nib but has great springiness. A great nib, only as THE nibmeister can make. But alas, all
I care for are italic nibs. I even have italics for all my Namiki Vanishing Points! Note
that this nib is new and I found that after a few test words, that I simply prefer italics
for all of my writings, no matter how responsive and superb other nibs may be. Your Cost:
10% off Mottishaw's price. One more advantage if you are impatient kind. Mottishaw came in
from vacation for a few days and is off again. Also, if you send him your nibs, my
understanding is that he currently has a 3 month backlog so this may be the nearest thing
to 'instant gratification' when you simply gotta have a nibmeister super duper nib in flex
EF. Please e-mail me directly if interested. I can furnish lots of references. MT |
| No-show Pen Sale |

Here are some pens for sale with what I think are some good prices,
offered especially in honor of pen lovers who will be "no-shows" by staying out
of DC's heat this coming weekend. All prices *include postage* in the US and pen(s) can be
returned within one week for a refund if not satisfied. PayPal preferred, checks and MO's
also welcome....#1 Mabie Todd Swan "Minor No. 2" in bronze, black, and pearl
marbled plastic. I don't know why they called this model the "Minor," but it
doesn't refer to size--it measures 5.25" long. It's a lever filler with a black
plastic lever--the first time I've seen a plastic lever. The gold plated clip is marked
"Swan" at the top, and has brassing to the shoulder and ball. A narrow cap band
also shows some brassing, and there's a cap lip crack--the band looks to be holding it in
place, so to speak. On the plus side, the nib is marked "Swan, 14ct" and writes
a nice fine line. I'd say the nib has more of a soft feel to it than being really
flexible. The barrel imprint is very clear, and the feed is also marked, "Swan
M2" (which I take to stand for "Minor No. 2"). The imprint of a swan on the
top of the cap is also clear. Iridium is present on the nib and the pen has a new sac. A
delightful user, $35.00 delivered....#2 As a pair only (they look so good together!):
Parker Duofold Jr. and Lady Duofold, both in red permanite. The Jr. has two narrow cap
bands and no cap lip cracks. No brassing either to the clip or the bands. Original
Christmas tree feed and the nib is marked, "Parker Duofold" and writes a fine
line. Very clear, standard barrel imprint. Button filler (of course!) with a new sac.
Minor oxidation to the bhr cap top and blind cap. The Lady Duo has the wide gold filled
cap band, no brassing to band or clip, and clear barrel imprint. Minor oxidation again to
the bhr cap top and blind cap. An old scuff or bite mark on the section has been partially
buffed out, leaving a bit of a flat spot. The nib is marked "Parker Pen" and
writes a *very smooth medium* line. Has a new sac. Both pens for $90.00, delivered....#3
Parker 45, basic black in excellent, super-clean condition. This one shines!! The only
flaw I see is a tiny flea bite to the metal finish on the lip of the cap. The convertor is
clear as a whistle, showing faint traces of ink only on the piston. Clean as it is, I'm
not going to dip this one to see how the 14kt nib writes, but it looks like a fine with
all iridium present. $25.00 delivered.... #4 Newbie Grab Bags: 4 pens for $35, delivered.
Each grab bag will have 1 bhr pen, 1 vintage miniature (maybe a combo), 1 vintage plastic
pen, and the 4th will be either plastic or bhr, your preference. There won't be any huge
cracks, bent nibs or such, but expect each pen to come needing some TLC, and be pleasantly
surprised if one doesn't. All pens will be in writing condition--e.g. sacs present and
feeds not clogged..... #5 Esterbrook J, no transitional features to distinguish it, just a
lovely dark blue, new sac, and a 9314 fine stub nib, all in excellent condition. I'll send
the box that the nib unit came in as well. $30.00 delivered. That's all--thanks for
reading! |
| Parker selection advice? |
| |
8/7/2001: Michael |
|
Advise me, please! I'm currently looking for a Parker fountain pen and
have found quite a selection of 51s and 61s on eBay. (I miss my old Parker vectors and
have been told to look to eBay for some earlier Parker fountain pen models which are good
performers) But, being new to all this, I'm somewhat bewildered and full of questions. 1)
What do the model numbers mean? 2) How can I tell whether the nib is fine or medium? (I'm
looking for fine.) 3) Are the nibs interchangeable? (and if so, where can I locate a fine
nib for these models?) Finally, I wondered if I could elicit some advice in terms of
selection: 4) Since I'm basically looking for a pen with excellent performance (the casing
style/design is relatively unimportant to me), which Parker model (51, 61, or other) is
the more solid performer? 5) In terms of refilling, which refill apparatus is more
reliable? Thank you for your time and any advice you are willing to share! |

I would appreciate the response of anyone who can tell me the barrel

Alan, The Parker Mosaic is due for release this fall. So it is currently
not in stock anywhere. I think it is going to be one of those pens that grows on folks.
Some will like it and some won't, but isn't that the case in most all pens? The one thing
that I wish in the Mosaic is that Parker would have made it in the Centenial size. But
looking at it from their point of view they save production cost since the barrel and cap
size is the same for the fountain pen and rollerball in the international size. Despite
the debate over if the pen looks good or not, I think that the Mosaic will sell out
relativly quickly just because of the Parker name and those that hope that the Parker Pen
Company will continue on. Time will tell of course... Dean |

| Friction fit versus screw in nibs |
| |
8/6/2001: |
|
Greetings, Just learned that some nib assemblies are not screwed into the
pen but merely friction fit. Questions: 1. Is there ANY advantage to the friction fit of
the nib assembly to the pen body or is this just to reduce cost? Surely a thread for a
screw in nib section can't cost too much more to manufacture? 2. What are the
disadvantages of friction fit nib assemblies? Curious. MT |

FYI, I just did a search for Parker 61 at ebay and one of the items was
an advertisement featuring Bob Hope; I checked it out and it's a picture of Bob Hope
watching a Parker 61 upside-down in a bottle of ink being refilled. So I get the picture,
so to speak. |

Thanks for the info. I looked at it (gray teflon tube) under my lighted
magnifier at work and do see three little holes at the top in a small protrusion. I don't
see how sticking this in a bottle of ink will fill the pen, but the phrase "capillary
action" in my head must mean that something in high school science stuck. I'll give
it a shot and if no luck then try the flushing methods that were so kindly posted for me.
I assume I am to stick the teflon tube part way down in the ink bottle, nib-end-up,
protrusion-with-holes down, right? Thanks again. |

Reading through the posts got me to thinking - I've also been known to
use one of those hoses that you attach to a faucet that has a spray head on the other end
(cheap things, bout $2-$3) I don't exactly what they call them, but scratch your head and
think a bit, and you'll figure out what I mean. One end on the faucet, the spray head
removed and the end of the hose on the section or back end of the 61 filler. Just crack
the faucet open so that you get a little flow, and let it run in the sink for 1/2 hr. or
so. You get a nice steady flow to flush the pen out, and you don't have to sit there and
fiddle with the thing to get it clean. |

Rikpropas suggests using a bulb from a medicine dropper to clean a pen.
Being lazy, I went for a much more efficent device for flushing pens - Radio Shack sells a
"desoldering bulb" - catalog #64-2086 (old catalog, but still a valid number, I
believe). Remove the teflon insert, and you have a bulb that will fit on the section of
most pens (it stretches quite a bit). You can move a lot of water through a pen with this.
It looks like the one that they sell for cleaning technical pens, but with out the fancy
fitting and the price! $2.79 in my old catalog. |

This thing has got to rank right up there (or down there, as the case may
be) with the repro Snake and the balky Sonnet as a major loser product. Kind of shows
where Parker is headed...taking all the leftover bits and pieces of discontinued Duofold
finishes and creating one hideous pen. And no Centennial size to boot. |

Yes, the Parker 61 can be a high maintenance pen, but it can also be a
great writer. In my experience, most 61s, no matter, how crudded up can be fixed swiftly
and safely at home. If the below instructions don't work, get yourself a medicine dropper,
of the sort that comes with pediatric over the counter medications. Use it to flush the
pen, at filler end and nib end with warm (100 degree, no more) water. Repeat until the
water runs reasonably clean. Then apply your mouth to either (but not both) end and blow
it through to remove excess moisture. Now try filling as described below. In extreme
cases, you can fill the pen using the bulb, but be ready for a mess. You may have to
scribble with the pen for a few minutes to get it running right. From this point on, keep
the pen filled, or flush to empty, as described above. Hope this helps |
| Parker 61 |

8/4/2001: Berry |
|
Stacie, Parker 61s unscrew just behind the black point section, right
where the silver barrel starts. When you get the top off, it will either have a dark gray
Teflon lined metal tube with 3 holes in the top, or a silver converter with a squeeze bar
over a flexible ink sac. If it has the gray tube, stick the tube in a bottle of ink for
about 30 seconds, and this will fill the pen if it is not clogged. If the pen has the
silver converter, stick the point of the pen into a bottle of ink, and squeeze the metal
bar 4 times. This should fill the pen. If the pen has the gray tube, the pen may not write
well at first. You may have to keep it in ink a little longer. If it still doesn't write,
post back and someone will tell you where you can get it serviced. The little arrow above
the nib or point of the pen is a decorative piece, Parker's trade mark arrow. It is also
used to show you that the pen is being held in the proper position, arrow up. Hope this
helps, Berry in Gilroy |

Today I bought a pen at the flea market, it's a Parker 61, seems to be a
brushed aluminum, it's very light. Can anyone direct me to a resource to find out how to
fill it with ink? It apparently doesn't take cartridges. It's got a little silver thingie
just above the nib that I assume is some kind of filling mechanism but I don't want to
fool around with it and break it accidentally. Any and all info appreciated! I didn't kow
until after I bought it that these things are collectible, I just like fountain pens. TIA,

For persons attending the DC Show I will have a separate table for the
Club membership forms and details. If it is not manned when you come by seek me out. There
will be copies of our newsleter for review but please do not take the copies marked: Leave
on Table. Others may want to see for themselves what a nice product it is for the $15 a
year. The Aug. meeting is this Sunday at 2PM. There will be no meeting in Sept. as is
usual due to the Labor Day weekend. The Club meets the first Sunday of each month. It is
likely we will move the Oct. meeting from Oct. 7th to Oct. 5 to coincide with The Pen Fair
Extravaganza at Jimmy Dolive's Total Office Products which is also our regular meeting
place. Finally the Nov. meeting will likely be smaller than usual due to the Columbus Pen
Show that weekend and a large number of Club members make that trip. See y'all in DC. |

I'm sure my opinion will be in the minority, but I have to express it

with it, but Retro 51's motto works for me here: "Life is too short to carry an ugly

8/2/2001: Ron Zorn |
|
Gotta agree with at least one point on Bill's review on the Cross ATX -
your fingers slip along the section like it was a greased pig. I just couldn't get any
traction. The pen is quite nice otherwise, and comfortable to use. I finally masked the
two ends and grit blasted it with a _very_fine_ grit (at low pressure). It gave the same
matte finish, and the traction that I want. |

Hi: I'm a complete novice with fountain pens. I have a Montblanc 146
which I understand fills via a piston. Immersing the nib in ink and unscrewing the other
end of the pen does not seem to pull ink into the clear plastic section of the resevoir.
The cap/piston does come all the way off but leaves some sort of assembly within the pen
that emerges slightly from the open end. Am I doing it all wrong or is there a problem
with the pen? Thanks |

HELLO ALL: I recently purchase a horde of modern pens. I am trying to
date and value MINT OLD STOCK Mont Blanc 149's. There are some obvious differences in the
nibs and clip rings. They are: 1. The nib reads 14C and has a minimal amount of rhodium
plating: 2. the nib reads 14k and has a solid rhodium shield; 3. The nib reads 18k and has
a solid rhodium shield: 4. The clip ring is completely blank: 5.It reads made in Germany;
or 6. It reads Germany [none have serial numbers] 7. The boxes are simple clamshell in an
off white leatherette and are contained in a double cardboard sleeve 8. The prices vary,
they are $29.95, 49.95 79.95 or unpriced. I appreciate any help in dating and valuating
these MINT old pens, THANK YOU, Mike |
