| Looking for Montblanc 146 Stand | |
| 8/31/2000: Joshua | |
| I am looking to purchase a Montblanc 146 crystal and resin/sterling pen stand (NOT the stand with the flat base and gold engraving plate). I don't care if it is scratched or chipped slightly, as long as it works and is in one piece (and fits the 146 fountain pen, not 144 or 149). Will pay $150 for it, no more. Please e-mail with details. | |
| Fred's 0552 1/V | |
| 8/31/2000: Stephen Lam | |
| I have a couple of Watermans 0552 1/2Vs and all of them have friction fed sections and they are all hard rubber. If the pen in question is mine, I'll use heat to help remove the section. It is just a question of being careful. If open flame is too frightening, use a heat gun, or just a plain old hair blower. Heat always works with HR and plastic. It is just a question of acquiring the technique, which will only happen after you have done it a few times. | |

| Vacumatic filling unit tool | |
| 8/31/2000: Ronald Gill | |
| I have been restoring Vacumatics for a short time and have had very little trouble taking out the filling unit. I have just received a 1932 vac that has a lock down filler with threads that are wider than my tool. Is there a universal tool to take care of ALL the Vacs (I got mine from the Pen Sac Co.), or do I have to devise some other solution. Thanks, Ron | |
| Waterman Pens - Kyle | |

| You can't go wrong with a Waterman pen. Okay so my view is a bit slanted, I "love" Waterman's. As far as vintage vs new? I can't wait to see this thread. If you check some previous posting you'll see pros and cons for both and that yes people love and USE their vintage pens. Dee | |

| The answer(s) to my recent queery about the ladies telescoping pen and whether it is (not is likely to be) a press fit or a screw in section is not to be found in FD's book. It is a nice set of guidelines but I was hoping my queery would reach someone who knew something specific about the pen in question and not produce generic answers.Surely others must have this pen and know about it. I have restored/repaired hundreds of pens (vacs and others) but have worked with very few HR pens and hoped that the more experienced out there would have other/better? rules of thumb than are noted in FD's text. So. does anyone out there really know?-and is willing to share the answer with me? with the rest of the Bulletin Board audience? | |

| Fine writing paper sources | |
| 8/31/2000: Len Provisor | |
| Hopefully your collection of vintage or modern fountain pens are all being used and enjoyed....not hidden in a closet like some I know. The other half of total pleasure in using your fountain pens, is the fine paper upon which you lay the ink. Here are a few online sources for quality papers, some offering either free samples or very low cost sample packs. I'm especially excited to find that Twinrocker Paper, once featured in Pen World Magazine, is located in Brookston, IN, only a few miles off the Interstate on my way to the Ohio Pen Show. On my search for papers, just enter : fine papers, which gave me a multitude of sources I was delighted to discover. Crane.com Southworth.com Gmund.com and a fascinating japanesepaperplace.com Have fun. | |
| The Pen Mechanic and John Mottishaw | |
| 8/30/2000: Michael Pantano | |
| The Pen Mechanic, actually, is Bill Enderlin. John Mottishaw is a different person. John is a wizard with nib repairs and reconfigurations, and well regarded throughout the hobby. Bill is a fine, experienced, reasonably priced pen repair person ... a friend, and someone I'd trust with any pen I own. | |

| I do not own any fountain pens at this time, but I enjoy writing with a med. ball point pen. I am drawn, no pun, to the style of the Waterman Fountain Pens, but have no idea where to start. What are the significant differences between vintage and new? Are the vintage pens readily used and what about repairs? Thanks for any advice or help, Kyle. | |

| Come on Frank, we know you are out there. all is forgiven. | |
| Re: Waterman Restoration | |
| 8/30/2000: Mike | |
| I agree with Mr. Rossow's suggestion about the Dubiel book. This timeless repair guide has restoration instructions, hints, and tips that anyone should find helpful. I learned to rebladder, clean, disassemble and reassemble old pens with much success. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn to do basic pen repair. I would still say send your precious babies to an experienced pen doctor and save the do-it-yourself stuff for less precious babies. | |
| Re: Waterman Restoration | |
| 8/30/2000: Dave Rossow | |
| Fred, a few (humble) suggestions which might be helpful. Old pens, HR or plastic, are often quite fragile and it would be a shame to possibly destroy such a nice pen as yours. You might consider contacting John Motishaw, The Pen Mechanic, for repairs. From what I understand, he does excellent work and his prices are reasonable. This may be a great alternative to DIY, especially if this is a first-time project. You can visit his website for more info at: http://members.aol.com/THEPENMECH/pens.html. Also, you might consider buying Frank Dubiel's repair guide. Stuffed full of interesting facts and lots of useful DIY info, it's available from http://www.pendemonium.com for a mere $20. Good luck with a great pen! | |

| Thank's for the tip on the ~forrest site! Fun reading, and how true! I suppose that it is possible that the site attracts the "sour grapes," and we don't hear about the successes of MB. However I have always believed that the success of MB is not due as much to a quality product, as it is really slick marketing! | |
| Waterman restoration | |
| 8/30/2000: Fred Kozub | |
| I recently acquired (in the wild) a Waterman 552 1/2 V telescoping ladies ringtop pen. A similar one is depicted in the Blue Book on p.66 BL. Is the section a screw in or a press fit? Is the section and barrel which shows from under the overlay plactic or HR? I really don't know how to tell by looking as they are black and nice and shiney. If HR then I'm told I shouldn't soak to seperate (so I can re-sac) but rather should use heat. As I've not had any experience doing this does anyone have any "rules of thumb" and/or cautions about the heat source, about how hot it should get, should I look forward to application of heat "sessions" a number of times before its likely to seperate? I've never worked with a HR section (if that's what it is) and would like to get it right the first time. The pen is really nice looking with a flower pattern on it. I thank you in advance for your help. | |

| The San Francisco Bay Area Pen Show is fast approaching. There are still tables and hotel rooms at our special rate available. The Auction at 3:00 PM Saturday Sept. 23 is more than full. Please don't send any more items. We will be finalizing the catalog in the next few days and due to an abundance of submissions there will be silent auctions Friday and Saturday as well. I am happy to say that there will be something for everyone in both live and silent auctions including bags of great parts. If you fix your own pens you know how critical it is to have parts when you need them. Here's your chance. We plan on posting the catalog for the live auction on our website and we will be accepting absentee bids. Check with me to see how it's going to be done. I will let you know when the catalog is up, but in the meantime go to www.inksampler.com to check out our website. Hope to see you all there. | |

| Wahl Metal Pens Question | |
| 8/28/2000: Michael | |
| My question is about the flat top Wahl metal pens from the 1920's. We've all seen them in various patterns of gold or gold fill. I have two Number 4's in green gold fill. Has anyone seen any other colors in these pens? Like maybe Rose Gold? Thanks! ~Michael~ | |
| Porsche Design fountain pen | |
| 8/28/2000: LyssOnLyne | |
| John, I, too, saw that pen at Colorado Pen Co. I don't think you were taken. I do, however, think the pen was never really worth $500, especially when you consider what $500 can buy in today's pen market. My only complaint with it is the way the cap posts. It spins around. That bugged me or I might have brought out the credit card. Enjoy your pen. For 100 frogskins, it's a good buy. | |
| Need cap:Waterman 55 Mottled | |
| 8/27/2000: Len Provisor | |
| Don't confuse mottled with woodgrain or ripple. Many people refer to all red/black hard rubber as ripple or mottle. The major U.S. pen makers using this material were very similar, but the European manufacturers of this rod stock extruded the material in a different manner, the ripple/mottle are visibly different. I have a prototype somewhat-ripple Wahl Eversharp Gold Seal, the 'ripple" material, similar to what we usually see, also incorporates streaks of red and yellow. Another Wahl Oversize gold Seal is a completely different, a lighter brown woodgrain I have never seen, more on the swirl side. If Wahl collectors know what this is, please let me know. My 1931 English Valentine, looking exactly like a Parker Duofold (that's why Parker bought them out in 1931), has an incredible ripple/mottle look, a more closely grained/streaked ripple appearance. Hard to explain, but to mottle/ripple collectors, you know what I mean. Early Japanese ripples are entirely different, as are German and Italian materials. What a diversion. All I'm asking for is a Waterman 55 woodgrain cap. It is for a cut-out barrel demonstrator I purchased at the DC Pen Show. I'll fit a nib, section, sac and have a great demo pen. Besides paying fair price, I'm liberal with tons of sample advertising ink blotters. | |

| Engraving pens in the Parker Monoplane | |
| 8/27/2000: Len Provisor | |
| In the March, 1929 Parkergram magazine a story is related about the very first, and perhaps only time in history, that Parker pens were engraved while in flight. At Shreveport, LA the first fountain pen engraving ever attempted at high altitute was carried out by Mr. Jacob Lowe of the Keller-Youngblood Jewelry Company. He took aloft two Parker Pearl and Ebony pens in which the initials of Mr. John D. Ewing and W. K. Henderson were sketched and did the actual engraving in the air. Mr. Henderson is known to radio fans from coast to coast for his highly entertaining and unique radio programs. Yes indeed, George S. Parker was one of the most creative and inventive marketing wizards of the day. The 1928 Parker Duofold Monoplane captured the American public's attention, contributing greatly to increased sales and public awareness of Parker Duofold pens. Even store displays would feature a large cardboard model of this airplane. I have seen one in a Parkergram, perhaps one is still buried in some advertising goods to surfaced at a local flea market. Mr.Parker did not make models of this plane, that I know of. However, I have. This historical replica model is available in a limited production only to the end of this year. Featuring an 18" wingspan, solid wood construction, 30 coats of paint and hand lettered details. Each plane is personally signed by Geoffrey S. Parker, great grandson of George S. Parker. You could not get any closer than this to own a great piece of the Parker Pen Company history. Visit www.inkblotters.com for close up photos of this great model. Painstakingly made after two years of research from original blueprints of this Fairchild FC2W2 model, and Parker family photo archives. Orders taken by subscription only, at year end...there will be no more. First production lot is now being delivered, final production orders to 12/31/00 will be delivered sometime in February, 2001. Visit www.inkblotters.com for close-up photos of the actual vintage airplane and this model. Price: $250. ea VISA MC AMEX PERSONAL CHECK. Shipping safely world-wide. | |

| Hallmark Pen | |
| 8/26/2000: Pruitt Hall | |
| Sure do wish to thank all of you out in Penlovers for helping me with the Parker 75 I recently unearthed in the garage. Many thanks for the emails on shedding some light onto a pen that this non-pen person sure didn't know anything about. At the same time I came across this Parker, I also found an old Hallmark wooden ballpoint that I believe was my fathers. What type of wood it is, I cannot fathom, but it's still a pretty pen, nonetheless. My questions about this pen is: Is there any active collector market for a Hallmark wooden pen? Are refills still obtainable for this? Many thanks in advance for all of your help. | |
| Parker Sterling Ballpoint | |
| 8/26/2000: Pruitt Hall | |
| Was cleaning out the garage the other day and found a pen I believe has been stored for at least 15 years. It's a Parker sterling ballpoint (refill long ago dried up). But interestingly, I cannot find anything out about this pen. It is only marked on the barrel, "Y1, Parker, MD, Sterling, 925, France" and has a couple of proofmarks of some type. It doesn't have a traditional push button, rather the whole top cap pushs down. I don't have any clue as to when it was made or what it is. Can anyone shed any light on this pen? | |

| Porsche Design fountain pen | |
| 8/26/2000: John York | |
| I recently purchased a Porsche Design titanium fountain pen w/a 18 kt gold nib. The Colorado Pen Company store in Bethesda, Maryland had them listed as costing $500, but they were on closeout for $100. I've looked high and low on the web and can't find this pen anywhere. Has anyone out there seen this pen or know any thing about it? Was this as good of a deal as it seems, or did I get taken? John York | |
| Treasures in my own basement | |
| 8/26/2000: Len Provisor | |
| I'm in the advertising promotional biz, sold some pen lines since 1970, such as Parker and others. Several years ago I cleaned out my basement of a huge assortment of samples and many pen kits, new old stock, and displays. Took it all to the Chicago Pen Show, my second pen show ever. Fortunately my 10 year old son liked my pens also, and stashed a huge carton of MIB Parker goods I didn't even know about, including Bicentennial 75's, Ambassadors, kits and several years of every pen catalog. Brilliant kid. At the show I quickly found out what it's like to be at the wrong end of a "feeding frenzy". Unloading about 14 large boxes, before I even made it to my table I was like a deer caught in headlights. Boxes were being pulled opened before even off my dolly. A total stranger said to me, "Boy, you need some help". That's how I met my good friend John Deeley from Houston. Can you even imagine the panic. In three hours of constant shoving, pushing, sweaty arms I was cleaned out. My pockets were bulging, and my wife was hysterical laughing at me. I drove home 50 miles, surprised my kids busting in on an unauthorized party, got more "stuff", back at hotel by 3am. It was a good show. Now it's time to clean out the basement again, this time I know where I stashed the pen kits, displays and samples. Also, a better idea of what I should get more than $ 10. each. Moral of story: Check your own basements and attics, your parents and friends, even offer to help your neighbors in payment of pens. It may work beautifully. | |
| Pens - Cardiff, Wales | |
| 8/25/2000: Will Thorpe | |
| Cardiff has a fabulous downtown shopping area. About two blocks from the train station is the Royal Arcade and a store called the Cardiff Antiques Center. 30 or so vintage pens. I was on a quest for Conway Stewart's but did see a Red translucent Waterman 100 year pen (small chip at top of cap next to clip and nib needs retipping) for 110 pounds ($170) and I believe negotiation was possible. It wasn't a first year pen though (I think). Anyway the pens actually belong to a fellow named Keith Millard, phone 01633 276462 if interested. I get nothing out of this, just being helpful. | |
| Pens - England | |
| 8/25/2000: Will Thorpe | |
| Should you visit Bath go to a store called PAPYRUS Stationers at 8 Upper Boro' Walls. The store is only a few blocks from the train station. A fellow collector keeps 30 to 40 vintage pens on display and for sale in the store. Looking for a 1939 Parker Maxima, Black, mint in the box with instructions for 295 pounds (about $460.00), it's in the case. I didn't examine it though so can't attest that it is truely mint. Also a Waterman Patrician Onyx that was really pretty, ambered but pretty. The Onyx is marked made in USA but has a nib marked Canada. 550 pounds (about $800). Manager is Moira Hobson, phone 01225 463418 if interested. PAPYRUS also has a store in London at 48 Fulham Road but I don't know if they have vintage pens. | |

| Several people have inquired about my recent trip. A big chain office supply storein England is W H Smith. They sell Parkers, Watermans, and a vast amount of student pens. The 60 washable blue international ink cartridges for 1 pound (about $1.54) were purchased there. They have a lot of really fine stationary also. WH Smith is everywhere, in the train stations, the airports, the malls. | |
| Old Pens ... | |
| 8/25/2000: Michael Pantano | |
| I've weighed in on this topic before on other forums, so why not here? I love my pens in used condition. Indeed, I don't even mind name engravings, so long as they're professionally done. As has been said, the age marks are really just "character" lines. I think all this adds to the mystique involved in using an aged pen (or vintage clothes, or vintage watches, or vintage anything). When you know the provenance of an item, isn't that even more special? I have a nice Waterman's 52 smooth gold overlay that belonged to the grandfather of my business partner. He was a lawyer in Norfolk, VA. When I use the pen I can almost smell old leather chairs and dusty law books. There are even two pens in my collection that I swear are haunted! (Please don't call for the guys in the white coats!) The first is a two jewel 1943 Parker 51 in blue with a Sterling cap. I actually feel this "connection" with its former owner (I have absolutely **no** actual notion of the pen's provenance), who I beleive to have been a Navy man in the Pacific in WWII. I know ...... you're chuckling. S'okay. Might it be a real connection or might I simply be influenced by a 1944 Parker 51 ad I have hanging on my office wall that shows a Navy officer's hand holding the very same pen and showing a letter signed "Love, Betty." In any event, the feeling I get when I use this pen is fun for me .... imagined or not. The other pen with which I feel a similar connection is a silver Vac Maxima. Again, I have no idea whatever of the pen's real provenance. But I get this feeling of the previous owner's work as a bank officer in the interwar years. ...... anyway ... call me nutty, but that's my story and I'm stickin' to it! ~Michael~ | |
| Like your face, pen wear adds character | |
| 8/25/2000: Len Provisor | |
| Look into your mirror, soon as you wake up, if you dare, what do you see? It's called "character" lines. Vintage pens come in all shades from a 100 year old "minty" and pristine condition like the day it was made, in which case you leave it alone. More often, like your face in the morning, it's going to have some character. A few lines from the toils in it's life, a few nicks and scratches, and perhaps the pen may have an interesting engraved name. Except for major part restoration, I usually leave my pens with this character. I prefer to pick up my Mustard "51" I call my "G"-Man pen, engraved with the name F. Ness, perhaps related to Elliott Ness, G-Man crimebuster of early Chicago Capone Gang fame, although he was "busted" 10 years before the "51". When you see a 1941 Parker "51" or a 1932 Wahl or a 1918 Waterman, no matter the condition, for a change think of what was going on that year in the owner's life. World War I or II, the Stock Market Crash of '29, the New Deal in 1932, these pens were there, they wrote part of that history. The date codes on "51"s can get you to almost the very month of the year. The character on those pens are time capsules of the period. Being a hopeless romantic, those are some of my thoughts when I use my pens in as-found condition beause they tell a story besides being restored to a new life. | |
| Polishing Pens | |
| 8/24/2000: Jon Rosenbaum | |
| When I first started out restoring pens and pencils about 4 years ago, I swore by hand polishing. I used either Simichrome and the Micro Mesh system and got excellent results, especially with Micro Mesh. The only problem was that it took forever. Manual polishing, done right simply takes too long. About a year ago, I bought a grinder, converted it to a buffer and use jeweler's "Bobbing" compound for smoothing and eliminating most scratches followed up with "Crystal Clear" a fine rouge-like substance that is used to polish plastic watch crystals. The results are as good if not better than hand polishing. It is not inconsistent, it is actually more uniform than manual techniques. Also, I should note that to reduce the velocity on the buffer wheel's edge (that's what counts, not the shaft speed) use a smaller, not larger wheel. My grinder came equiped with 6" wheels and I bought 5" buffer pads. The edge speed is slower. Yes, one must use care not to burn the plastic and be especially careful with cap edges...those I do by hand! | |

| WTB: Shaeffer LT-OS Cap | |
| 8/24/2000: Ross | |
| Hello, I'm in need of a Jade Green Shaeffer Cap for a 1924 Lifetime OS. Cap I have is cracked, with a section messing below the decorative gold band. It is my intent to make this pen suitable for every day usage- hence need for new cap. Cap I have is 2 3/8 - 2 1/2 in long. Inside diameter is 1/2 in. With cap on, pen is 5 3/8 in long. With Cap on top of pen (open so to speak), pen is 6 3/4 in long. Flat clip with ball end, single gold band at bottom of cap ~1/8 in wide. Please reply to: rl1856@yahoo.com Thank you, Ross Lipman | |
| Using pens | |
| 8/24/2000: Rod Ragner | |
| I prefer pens that have been used, but not abused. I agree Kristi, there is a certain mystic about used pens. My father in-law turned 80 on July 30 and we had a huge party for him and his 50 closest (living) friends. He had once told me that his father used only green in in a fountain pen. At the party we provided a "guest book" and asked all of his friends to write a note with signature. I provided my green Waterman Patrician with a Broad Oblique nib and green ink and an Opera rollerball for people to sign. There were tears in Bob's eyes when he read the book; most people used the fountain pen. Whenever I use that pen I think of Bob and how happy that day was for him. My opinion: use your pens! | |

| I have to comment on this subject because, I disagree with using any motorized tool for polishing pens. I hand polish all of my pens with the greatest results. I would be leary to purchase a vintage pen that had been polished with a motorized tool for fear of inconsistent buffing. | |

| To polish pens I have a battery powered Dremel tool with a 2: cotton rag wheel on it - the wheel is oversized for the tool so it does not spin "full speed ahead" - a nice gentle spin with just enough power to polish a pen and not destroy it. ALSO... This company makes a product that removes scratches from aircraft windshields - the liquid along with their various application pads will not only polish your pens but will also remove any scratches.....http://micro-surface.com/ | |

| a salesman at pearl paint told me that if i did not want to use a pre made solution (e.g.- higgins), i could use one part ammonia to two parts H20. i have always had good luck with higgins, except for really stubborn clogs. in the past i have used straight white vinegar, which seemed to cause the nib no harm whatsoever. (no, it was NOT a gold nib) is there any reason to believe that ammonia would be less harmful? should i not use vinegar for a nib plated with precious metal? anyone with ammonia horror stories please get back to me. | |

| I have been using a product called Mirror Glaze for years to polish plastic pens. It is made for polishing plastic motorcycle windshields and airplane canopies or similar type items. It is liquid and I use a couple of drops on some soft terry cloth to polish the barrel. It comes in a couple of different grades of grit. Basicly fine and finer. If you don't have a buffing wheel you might give it a try, It has always worked great for me. And I will repeat the warning from Stephen, don't over polish and loose the imprint. | |
| To have and Hold, Ink, no ink? | |
| 8/24/2000: Dean Tweeddale | |
| To ink or not, to use or not, great discussion. I sometimes sit on both sides of this issue. As a hobbyist I have a collection of pens that is made up of both vintage and modern pens. All have been inked and used to some extent. However I do also buy and sell some pens, mostly the new limited edition pens that I feel will go up in value. Yes, these pens are kept mint un-inked and are bought for I guess what would be considered short term investment purposes. However I wouldnt consider them part of my permanent collection, usually they are just used to fund my hobby. Interestingly, I rarely re-sell a vintage pen that Ive collected, only if Ive found a better specimen or changed my focus in what Im collecting. So I vote for ink it and use it unless it may be a very fragile pen that you fear some irreversible damage could come to. But even then you may want to just once. My two cents. Dean | |
| Pen Barrel Polish | |
| 8/23/2000: Stephen Lam | |
| I use a buffing machine with a bit of wax. This should work for hard rubber and most plastics. For materials that are very soft, one needs to be very careful not to "burn" the barrel in the process. You may therefore wish to try it out on a couple of spares first. Also, when you buff or polish, you remove a little bit of the material from the barrel. So be careful you don't obliterate your imprint with over buffing. | |

| Parker/Waterman Sale | |
| 8/23/2000: Saul Kitchener | |
| If it's true that Rubbermaid has purchased Parker/Waterman/etc. I can only rejoice that those two great names may yet be brought back to the glory they once enjoyed. They could not be worse than Gillette, that's for sure. Present management closed the Parker factory, produced a string of incredible limited edition failures and this in an era that has seen a burgeoning of succesful new pen models. Way to go Rubbermaid. Please clean house and get rid of present management. This is my personal opinion!! | |

| Use the pens! | |
| 8/23/2000: Vince | |
| To collect a pen and not use it, is like buying a Ferrari, and not driving it. Or, you can collect 100's of pens so that when your time is up, some estate buyer sells them on eBay, stating: "new, never used" --which translates to, never enjoyed. | |
| Pens From Movies | |
| 8/23/2000: Mike | |
| I am wondering, with some of the messages about pens, if anyone has determined which kind of fountain pen it is that Michael J Fox (Marty in the movie) uses to write the letter warning Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd)about his untimely death at the hands of the Libyans in the movie "Back to the Future?" It looks big and old, more like a 30's era pen than a mid 50's era. Also, I must say that after reading the posts about inking a pen...I recently got an old Sheaffer Balance for abou $20, rebladdered it, the only thing wrong with the pen is that it has some brassing on the metalwork. I am almost petrified to use this work of art! It is either the largest or next to largest size of balance. It appears to be worth quite a bit. But is my baby! | |
| To have and to hold | |
| 8/23/2000: Ron | |
| Good discussion! I tend to agree with those who would USE a pen, rather than put it on the shelf. Any pen that is in my collection is at least cleaned and repaired, and in working conditon so that I can enjoy it's unique personality. If you don't ink a pen and write with it, how will you know if you like it? I have the pens to use them, not just look at them! At the same time, part of the fascination is wondering who owned them, what did they do for a living? I try to find out when I get the chance. If it's a 30's pen, what happened to the owner during WW II? I have a Conklin set that was owned by a guy who traveled the length of, and photographed the Pan-American hwy. Another pen was owned by a clerk for the NYC RR. A Duofold was owened by our office manager's father, who owned a stationery store. These pens are valuable to me because I know their history. A pen in the box is nice. I MIGHT keep a mint vintage pen mint. But a new limited edition? No - use it! | |

| To have and to hold | |
| 8/23/2000: Kristi | |
| I am among the many who use their pens. Although I am delighted to get one MIB, it does not have the same appeal as one that appears used, well travelled. A friend restores shotguns and small firearms and I used to test pattern them after work was completed. To use the elephant gun from a royal family in India, shoot General Patton's revolvers, etc was a thrilling sense of touching history. Pens evoke the same sense for me....was it used in business, writing love letters, notes of condolence or joy ? Write on. (Sorry) | |

| The business news on National Public Radio this morning said the sale of the Papermate/Parker/Waterman division of Gillette to Rubbermaid is now final. | never been touched/never been inked? | |
| 8/23/2000: Dee | |
| I think it all comes down to "Why do you collect or buy pens?" To look at and show off for the "investment" value? Or to use and enjoy the feel and touch of them? And that is true of any collectable item. There are people who collect cars just to put them in a warehouse to show off. And how about the doll and toy collectors? Often they keep the sealed boxes -- again that has an affect the "value". For me? I buy pens to use. I also like to try out a pen before I buy it. Do I like the comments of "oh what a nice pen." Sure, but you're more likely to get those if you are USING the pen. It's up to the individual, but hey that's what makes life interesting. Dee | |
| Ink or.....not ink??? | |
| 8/23/2000: audiom3 | |
| Come on. If you collect pens and never ink them, that's like a car collector who will NEVER drive the Ferrari 288 GTO parked in his garage! What's the point? And how does anyone REALLY know that pen has never been inked? It's pretty damn easy to clean a pen up to look unused. As long as it was well cared for while in use. | |
| MIB pens or slightly fondled? | |
| 8/23/2000: Len Provisor | |
| Sure, we like to find mint-in-the-box pens or sets, and when offered for sale can command a higher price over an identical pen that was perhaps inked once. I remember I started collecting fountain pens because I enjoyed using them. The only ones that are not used are very rare, delicate condition such as red hard rubber, or don't have all the working parts....at the moment. Some Limited Editions are incredible works of art, but they, too are meant to be eventually used. I admit, at first I hesitated to dunk the nib and suck up that ink, but why deny yourself? A friend told me the story of visiting a deceased relatives home, preparing her funeral attire. Going thru her wardrobe she chose to include a lace garment so beautiful, having never been worn her entire life because she did not want to possibly damage the garment. Well, she finally wore her favorite garment...to the grave. So, my friends, if you wish, keep your LE's and other pens MIB, never inked, maybe fondled while wondering... "what it would be like to write with this beauty?" Be sure to indicate in your will which one you want to take with you, maybe 2 or even 3. Ink them up too, it won't matter if they leak. No one will know. | |

| Greetings all!* Thanks for your interest in Michigan Pen Show!* I'd like to share a few observations about our show.** All who come are treated as club members and are welcome. The purpose of our not for profit show is to allow pen collectors to gather and enjoy our hobby with others. That's why even the auctions, both live and sealed bid, have no buyers premium.** You will find that most of the pressure to compete is not here, and this makes for a more relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We turn up very good pens and they are not controlled by the show organizers, it relieves the competition and misbehavior.** The main purpose of the show is to have fun and benefit the attendees in the form of knowledge shared and camaraderie with other pen folks.** Best regards,* Mark Peysakhovich** Come join us for the upcoming 11th Annual Michigan Pen Show, Sep 8-10, 2000. | Use the pens! | |
| 8/22/2000: Laurent Hodges | |
| I'm one who wants to use, not ogle, his pens. However, I very much appreciate the fact that there are so many pen collectors who want totally unused pens, because this keeps the good used pens cheap. I did once buy a demo pen off the Internet, at a huge savings, and when it arrived could not distinguish it from a brand new pen. And once I bought an unused original snorkel (the "TM with snorkel" model from late 1952) which I have never inked - but I have plenty of other snorkels to write with. In fact, I think I'll end this message and enjoy one of them by writing someone a memo... | |

| 8/22/2000: LouHerrera | |
| Can anyone help me access the address/telephone of the makers of the Rotring pens? I have a Rotring pen that gives the option of two different colors of ink refills and 0.7mm pencil lead. The barrel located at the top of the pen designed to select the color of ink or pencil constantly continues to stick or get jammed. I believe this is unacceptable considering the price I payed for the instrument. Thanks! Lou | |
| dip/used,no dip/mint?? | |
| 8/22/2000: Fred Kozub | |
| I suppose that strictly speaking a dipped test written pen is used. Sort of like a car, where once you take a test drive, the dealer marks down the price of the car because it's "used"---right? I guess the issue here is just how much use constitutes "used status". I fear this is a question with too many possible answers and little consensus. Do pen dealers have used demos for sale? Seems to me that some do. I wonder what all this is about anyway? Investment? Will we have futures or options trading in pens ; vaults to store them in as some do with gold: Certificates of deposit that will be traded instead of pens? Ownership in a street name of a brokerage house? It boggles the mind. IMHO buy what you want when you want it and pay the price. That way you'll be happy because you have done what you wanted to do.Now, when it comes time to sell...well, that's a story some one else will have to tell. | |
| to dip, or not to dip ??? | |
| 8/22/2000: Allen Gross | |
| I'd be interested in knowing how many collectors and sellers of new pens feel that dipping a new pen devalues it. Most of the dealers at the pen showa seem to be split 50/50. My feeling is that once ink hits the nib and feel and then tested, it's used. I'd like to hear from the rest of you out there ???? | |
| Sealed pens | |
| 8/21/2000: Don Lavin | |
| I have always thought that it was ludicrous that pen collectors would buy a fine high end limited edition pen and then never let it see the light of day. I often considered the fact that as more and more collectors refuse to open the sealed boxes, there is more and more possibilty for fraud. Especially with the Montblanc limiteds where a great number of collectors never open the boxes. Eventually people will realize that the boxes can be easily opened, the contents removed and the box resealed. It happens every day on the streets of New York with other so-called bargains (not with pens). It has even happened to a pen collecting friend of mine. Opening the box should not affect the pen's value and if someone cherishes the sealed box so much, so be it. Make them pay extra for fact that human hands have not touched the pens. After all they weren't made for writing much less holding, were they :) Don | |
| Wahl and bladder pen repairs | |
| 8/21/2000: Don Lavin | |
| Susan A has asked exc. questions about repair of vintage pens. First, the bladder filled pens from the 20s and 30s are amongst the easiest to repair although Wahls from the late 20s can present unusual problems. As a general rule, the sections are removable and new bladders are easy to install. Any number of repairmen perform this type of repair and I can recommend quite a few. E mail me for names of the most reasonable repairmen. The cost should not be more than $25.00 as a rule though I know of some shops who have asked for considerably more for common sack replacements. Congratulations on purchasing your vintage Wahl. They are amongst the most sought after vintage pens and should last for several lifetimes if properly cared for. Don | |
| Montblanc pen - fake? | |
| 8/21/2000: Charlie Anderson | |
| Hello, everyone. I wonder if you can help. I recently bought a Monblanc fountain pen at an auction, but I can't find any reference to it, so I wonder if it is legit. It is in the slim format of a Montblanc Noblesse but the cap has a single, gold-coloured clip with the montblanc logo at its end. Below the clip is written Mont (then below) Blanc (and then below again Germany) But no serial # Both the top of the cap and the bottom of the barrel have the same logo. The nib is sharply pointed and elongated, with the edges folded over. Again, it has the logo on the front of the nib with Mont and Blanc, one under the other. Is this a 70s model made in Germany? or is it some sort of a fake I would be grateful if someone could clarify this with their expert knowledge and e-mail me to that effect. -- I have no intention of selling it. Even if it is a fake, it writes really well!! Thnaks in advance Charlie | |

| Parker Vendome | |
| 8/21/2000: G.W. Willman, IV | |
| Hello all! I have been searching for over 7 years for a replacement of my much beloved Parker Vendôme fountain pen. It was a gift from my father but was sadly dropped, destroying the nib. I sent the pen to be repaired to Parker, however they returned to be a brand new pen. While I certainly appreciate their kind gesture (total charge: zero!), it was the wrong color, a metallic Parisian blue. Certainly a beautiful pen, but I have been searching since for one that unique color that was mine. Brief Description: The fountain pen was a Parker Vendôme, purchased circa 1990-1991, golden nib (medium), pen clip of typical Parker style and inlaid gold ring in the crown of the pen which encircled a faux golden disk, banded by black trim. The grip was a greenish blue finish, but the barrel and cap were the most beautiful and distinctive green-aquamarine. It was packaged in the standard Parker gray/gray-felt lined hinged box and included the removable plastic cartridge with plunger (hence also accepting the disposable Parker ink refills). Any information or leads you could provide would certainly be welcome; please feel free to email me or post, I will most certainly follow up. Respectfully, -G.W. Willman, IV | |
| Sealed or Unsealed | |
| 8/21/2000: Bruce | |
| Keeping the box sealed only makes sense if you are a collector of limited edition boxes. As a pen collector, a picture of the pen on the box is no better or worse than a picture of the pen in an advertising brochure. If there is really a market for investing in sealed limited edition pens, I suggest a reasonable business would be to run a vault where all the sealed box pen collectors could pay to keep there boxes in a safe and insured environment. Unless, of course, after the dinner party you want to bring out that lovely box to show off to your friends. (Maybe the manufacturers should start using a clear sided box.) | |

It has mother of pearl imbedded in the plastic. The second piece has a hole for the ink jar - or for a coffee cup. Lso Angeles, California is printed in black on each piece. The pen says "F" and is a Schaeffer. the original price stickers are on each for $7.00. this is a lovely set but I havent been able to find any research on it. Stickers on each piece say: Design Gifts, Original Design by Design Gifts Intern'l Inc. Any advice on this set would be greatly appreciated. | Parker 75 Insignia - sweating | |
| 8/21/2000: Andre | |
| I have a gold filled Parker 75 Insignia with the broad gold band at the tip (was a etched silver band originally but that section was replaced by Parker). Since the replacement, there is always a lot of ink stains on the gold band next to the nib whenever I removed the cap. I currently use Mont-Blanc ink, I've tried Parker ink for a short while but didn't get any better results. Any idea on how to solve the problem? p.s. I have the screw type filler. Thanks André | |
| Sealed or Unsealed | |
| 8/21/2000: Dean Tweeddale | |
| Personally I like the idea and sound of the factory sealed box. However experience has told me different and Id rather be able to confirm that what is suppose to be in the box actually is. An example that Ive heard of several times now is the person buying a factory sealed box with a nice pen behind that seal only to find upon opening the box that there is no pen inside. How would you expect the dealer that you purchased from to believe that? Unless you broke the seal in front of their eyes. An example that has happened to me is when buying a factory sealed Writers Series edition matching set, the numbers on the boxes where the same but the numbers on the pens and pencil were different. So that the set was not actually a matching set, rather three pieces put together as a set. I was able to return this for a matching set, but what if Id left the boxes sealed for several years?, at that point Id have no recourse. Therefore Im for breaking the seals and making sure whats suppose to be in the box is. Now as for inking and dipping I guess that could be another issue, what are your thoughts there? | |
| Kaweco sport refill | |
| 8/21/2000: Ron | |
| I bought a nice vintage Kaweco Sport set this weekend - FP and BP. The BP cartridge is either empty or dry. There is a DIN number on the refill, indicating that it is a standard refill (of sorts). Does anyone know where I could find a replacement? Note that this is NOT one of the Kaweco Sports by Diplomant. I'm going to try one of the Fisher universal BP refills - but my experience has been that they are AWFUL to write with. | |

| Pelikan Hunting | |
| 8/21/2000: Alan | |
| Hi. I'm looking for a Pelikan Hunting pen. Needs to be MIB but will accept lightly used. Will pay or trade MB Limited Editions, all of which are available towards any interesting OMAS and/or Pelikan fountain pen. I have made a decision to devote my collection to OMAS (Pelikans are for using) and the MB's have to go. Let me know if you're looking for anything. I think to some people the sealed pen holds are certain charm, being able to say "that pen has never been opened" really means something to them and I believe a sealed Montblanc will always be worth more in the future. I have never been able to stand having a sealed pen around, always afraid there may be no pen inside! Is that small strip of paper worth the extra $$$? That's for every collector to decide on an individual and very personal basis. I recently purchased a Karl the Great FP and had to unwrap it driving along one of the most dangerous roads in Atlanta so I wouldn't be thinking about the possibility of there being no pen inside the whole way home. There was, albeit garish, a pen inside. | |
| Wahl-Eversharp Fountain Pen | |
| 8/21/2000: Susan A. | |
| I'm new at this, please help. I bought a Wahl-Eversharp pen at an antique shop recently. The body and nib of the pen are in excellent shape but the bladder or sack is gone. Can this be repaired/replaced? Is it expensive? Who/where do you recommened pens be sent for repairs? What is the general cost for this type of repair? Can the pen be changed to use a converter? Frankly I was proud of myself for being able to identify the "Wahl" part of the pen since this was a name I had never heard mentioned before. This is my first antique store purchase of a pen, having always bought new pens before, and I'm using this as my learning experience so all info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Susan | |

| 8/21/2000: JiaXian | |

| I'd like to pose the following question: For as long as I've been selling new limited edition pens the accepted policy has always been that sealed pens are more collectible than unsealed pens. As a dealer, I assume the risk when I sell a sealed montblanc to a customer. If he or she receives it and then opens it, only to find no pen inside, I must assume they are honest and suffer the loss. This hasn't happened to me yet, but it's only a matter of time till it does. Do you think it's time to revise our collecting standards and eliminate the sealed policy as being best ? Personally, I feel if a pen is mint, unused, you can't do much better that that. Opinions invited !!! | |

| I'm trying to find a blind cap for a thin Vacumatic Golden Web. The cap should be black, with a black jewel. Happy to pay or swap for it. Also, next Triangle (NC) Pen Club will be Sunday, October 22, at 3PM. We will hold it at one of our member's homes to view their collection. E-mail for location! Today we had to change meeting places at the last minute: the bookstore was filled for cookbook demonstration. Maybe we should have shown ink mixing? Ross | |

| DC Show | |
| 8/20/2000: Terry Mawhorter | |
| Belated thanks to Bob Johnson for a "Super" effort at this year's DC show. Although I arrived late, 2pm on Saturday, I could see that the show was packed. I saw a lot of new faces at the registration desk and I am sure that Bob was glad that he brought in reinforcements. From all that I spoke with, this was a record event. A lot of pens changed hands and this was a great opportunity to see "penfriends". Of special note was the party on Saturday night to celebrate senior Ohio collector, Abe Schwartz's 80th. birthday. Abe has been collecting pens since the mid 60's. His first was a Parker Demi 51 which he got in the late 40's. He almost threw it away but decided that he should begin collecting old pens. The rest is history. Well for those of you that did not get enough of a pen "fix" in DC or if you did not make it, it's on to Detroit for the Michigan Pen Show, September 8-10, San Francisco, September 21-24, London, October 6-8, New Jersey, October 27-29 and of course Columbus, Ohio, November 2-5. Email me for info on the Ohio Show. | |

| Surprise "51" filler | |
| 8/20/2000: Len Provisor | |
| I happen to concentrate lately on Parker "51"s, and at the DC Pen Show I saw a few "red thread" fillers. When you see the threaded vacumatic filler part under the blind cap painted red, it makes an enormous difference. About 1947 Parker experimented with a rubber sac filler, the plunger attached to a spade shaped bar that pressed on the ink sac. Having less ink capacity than the barrel interior, this model was short lived. They are rare, and command a price accordingly. I was amazed to not only see a few pens with this feature, but also a desk pen, and a clear demonstrator showing the entire mechanism. Prized by the owner, no begging or offers were able to pry it from his collection. Look at the filling instruction sheets you may have with some of your boxed "51" sets, the red thread feature is illustrated and filling instructions explained. If anyone has an extra, let me know, I have plenty of "51"s for trade. | |

| 8/18/2000: Jon Rosenbaum | |
| Whew!, finally have a chance to catch my breath after the great DC show--Thanks Bob Johnson for a wonderful time!! We introduced two new repro catalogues at DC: 1)1952 Esterbrook showing complete line of pens, pencil desk sets, etc. All nibs with samples of writing style are shown. A great reference work for this increasingly collectable manufacturer. 19 color and 15 B&W pages, plus repro of original cover. $32 PP 2) 1937 Chilton showing the entire "Wingflow" line, all colors including red and blue, hardly seen in the wild. Includes pens, pencils, desk sets. 16 pages in color and repro of leather-like cover. $27pp. As usual, both are comb bound on heavy coated paper. They were enhusiastically received in DC, along with our recently reproduced Parker 51 from 1948 which we had to reprint because of the demand. So a fresh supply @ $37pp. Email for payment instructions (yes, I take Paypal) Thanks for your support. Jon R | |
| re: Air pocket in ink cartridge | |
| 8/18/2000: Waco Johnny D | |
| Just to expand on what Chuck said, over-cleaning is just as bad as
leaving a pen dirty when it comes to ink flow because it strips all the old ink's wetting
agents out of the pen. Even worse is not to let a washed pen dry thoroughly before use,
because any water left in the pen (or the converter) will stall ink movement, since water
contains no wetting agents. In your case you may wish to pull in and expel a couple of
converters' worth of ink (send the stuff down the drain, not back into the bottle), then
fill the pen a third time and use it.\ Also note that some inks "wet" far better than others, Waterman Florida Blue being one of the best, so you may wish to give that a try in your pens. The design of those crappy little converters is nothing to write home about as I've mentioned more than once in alt.collecting.pens-pencils, so applying a little extra vigilance is to be expected. But if you're also having similar problems with factory cartridges, that to me sounds like defective ink. |

| Air pocket in ink cartridge | |

| Air pocket in ink cartridge | |
| 8/17/2000: Jay Pulli | |
| I have a couple of fountain pens that have a problem with air pockets in the ink cartridges. Specifically, when the pen is upright (point up) any air in the cartridge will of course rise to the top. But when I turn it over, the ink cannot displace the air and get to the point. This happens with both cartridges and converters. Anyone know of any cures (thorough cleanings already made). | |

| 8/16/2000: Melinda Adams | |
| Just a note to say that the DC pen show was, for me, the greatest. I collect only, and the merchandise available was vast and some of highest quality I have seen in ages. Bob Johnson was like God...he was everywhere, attending to problems, making sure everyone was happy and was a wizard of organization and good humor. Certainly there were glitches, but these were overshadowed by the enthusiastic crowds and the general ambiance among buyers and sellers that I witnessed both Saturday and Sunday. Here's to meeting with old friends and new. I hated to go home. But I had to, or I'd have been thumbing my way back to Florida. Dean, wonderful meeting you. I hope to see you all again in Ohio! I'll be there! | |

| DC Pen Show report | |
| 8/16/2000: Len Provisor | |
| Wow !! What a great show. From Thurs. afternoon when I arrived, trading, schmoozing with old friends, buying and trading with about 30 collectors and dealers. Friday picked up with half the grand ballroom, about 100 tables, Sat & Sun was wall-to-wall buyers from the public and everyone did a brisk business. My first 100 1928 Parker Duofold airplanes that are numbered have been completely sold out. Balance of planes will also have Geoffrey Parker's signature, but no numbers. I stayed over Sun eve to depart on Mon. and enjoyed the beautiful relaxed ambiance of the Ritz-Carlton with a few friends and dealers. The best way to end a great DC show is having an aged brandy in the lounge, sinking into one of their deep plush chaise chairs, drawing on a silky smooth cigar and talking about The Ohio Pen Show coming up real quick in November. Sometimes "it just can't possibly get any better." | |

| Ink Cartridges | |
| 8/14/2000: Will Thorpe | |
| I own one pen that uses international cartridges. I bought 8 in an office store for 3.95 in Texas. I believe most of the catalogs sell them as 6 for 2.95 more or less. Last week I was in England. I bought 60 (five dozen) washable blue for 1 Pound, that's $1.54. I bought a jar of 50 different colors for the same price. Permanent black was 30 cartidges for 1 pound. Saw a few 1950's Conway Stewarts, lots of Parker 51's, all in the $60 - $90 range, one 1939 Parker Maxima, mint in the box with instructions, for $450.00 (I have the address/phone number if you're interested). One Parker True Blue ring top for about $400. Never made it to London, I was in Bristol and in Cardiff Wales. Did see Pen World Magazine for sale in several stores. I didn't buy any pens but I sure have a good supply of ink. There were actually lines of people waitin to buy in the two new pen stores I visited. New Cross, Watermans and Parkers everywhere. Parkers are popular. I was in a business meeting with 5 English fellows, two of them actually pulled out Parkers and one was using a Pilot disposable fountain pen. I pulled out my trusty Sheaffer B&P Balance from 1932 and we all got along great. They sell about 20 different fountain pens, for school kids, in the $3.00 to $12.00 range! I was amazed that in England when you fill out a regisration form or sign something with a fountain pen they actually wait for the ink to dry before they pick it up! | |

| Eversharp Fifth Avenue | |
| 8/14/2000: Vicki | |
| I have an Eversharp pen and pencil set that I believe to be "Fifth Avenue" made in the 40's by Eversharp to compete (unsuccessfully as it turned out) with Parker 51. They have 14K caps, but on the lower part of the caps under the clip is a large 6?4. The question mark is almost twice as large as the numbers, which are deeply incised and quite large. Can anybody help me out with information about these? Are they, indeed, Fifth Avenue and, if so, why the 6?4? What does that mean? Thanks for the help in advance. | |

| to bert about Fahrney's | |
| 8/12/2000: Bill Hollingsworth | |
| Bert, Fahrney's is also known as Pen's, Inc. They have been in business here in Washington, DC since 1929. They are located at 1430 G St NW. The toll free number is (800)624-7367. The regular telephone number is (202)628-9525. They also have a Maryland telephone number which is (301)568-6550. They publish a catalogue but I don't know how often. They are an upscale store which claims the White House as one of their regular customers. Hope this is of some help to you. Bill Hollingsworth aka holley8858@aol.com | |

| Sheaffer oversized red vein gray | |
| 8/12/2000: Larry Shelton | |
| James, it's probably original if there's not a white dot on the cap. Sheaffer's grey pearl with red vein pen was introduced I believe in 1931, the same year as the Feathertouch nib. The attraction of the Feathertouch nib was that it could write a fine line when flipped over. Coincidentally in 1933 Parker also touted this feature in advertisements for their new Vacumatic line of pens. The #7 Feathertouch nib (non white dot pen) was a step below the Lifetime Feathertouch nib (white dot pen). The large #7 pen sold for $7.50 while the Lifetime fetched $10. Uncommon nib? Sheaffer made pens by the millions but the #7 nib is not in my 1936 catalog. So how many Feathertouch #7 nib pens could they make between 1931 and 1935. Also I believe the grey pearl was discontinued after 1936. It's a nice pen so enjoy!!!! | |

| Parker 75 convertors | |
| 8/12/2000: Lih-Tah Wong | |
| Mary, any Parker ink convertor that fits current FPs will also fit the 75. Today, the available models are a twist- and slide-type piston convertor (see www.Parker75.com page on ink converts), the former holds more ink and is a bit costlier at $5 or so. If your nearby pen dealer does not have any, you can order these from Parker customer service at 800-237-8736. Good luck! Lih-Tah Wong | |

| Eletroplating | |
| 8/12/2000: Stephen Lam | |
| I have tried eletroplating in situ but the effects are not very good. Removable clips and other forms of trim can be replated in the usual manner. Get in touch with your local eletroplating factory/shop/service. It is probably not economical to send just one or two clip for replating but if you have quite a few, there should not be any problem. Before the items are replated, you should use very fine grade sand paper to remove remnants of the old plating where possible, or else the replated item may not look as good as new. Also, if the replated item has a name or trade mark, make sure it is not overly polished as the details of the name/mark might be lost afterward. | |
| gold electroplating | |
| 8/12/2000: Mary | |
| Has anyone tried to electroplate the gold clips, caps, etc. on vintage pens with brassing? Any kits for doing it at home? Also, is there a convertor for filling Parker 75's? Mine takes cartridges, but I would rather fill from the bottle. Thanks in advance for any info. | |

| San Francisco Bay Area Pen Show | |
| 8/10/2000: Saul Kitchener | |
| It has been brought to my attention that callers attempting to make room reservations for the San Francisco Bay Area Pen Show are being told there are no rooms left at the special show rate. There are rooms left! When making reservations please ask for the International Pen Show rate. Call the Marriott City Center at 510 451-4000 or 800 228-9290. When you consider that a hotel room in any decent hotel as close to Downtown San Francisco as the Marriott averages $200-$250 per night, our rate of $109 looks pretty good. Reservations have been coming in at a steady rate and we have begun to assemble the Auction catalog. Rememeber to check out our website www.inksampler.com where you can see pics of some great auction items and even download a brochure. If anyone needs info about the show or the area please don't hesitate to contact me. | |

| Just wanted to share my pleasant sense of surprise at the flexibility of the T2 OMAS nib. Also have an Abbondanza by Retro which has Stipula's titanium nib but haven't inked that pen yet. Having read and heard of the difficulties in working titanium, the nib is a pleasure to use. Perhaps the nib is a laminate? Does anyone have any thoughts on titanium's durability compared to gold nibs? | |

| Speaking of Parker ballpoints... | |
| 8/9/2000: Len Provisor | |
| Since Parker Jotters are no longer made in the USA I believe they will soon qualify as a desireable "vintage", they are often sought by Parker collectors. Well, this may be your lucky day! I'll be bringing various Jotters to the DC show, some are Parker advertising, calendar, I even have a few rare Jotter pencils that I sold many years ago to the The A.N.Palmer Company as a promotional giveaway. Yes, this is the Palmer of the handwriting school course fame. I'll be 'toting a huge bag of "stuff" to DC, hope to go home with empty bags and a few more pens. Be sure to see me for a FREE Duofold airplane ink blotter and a historical brochure on the Duofold airplane. If you're not there, e-mail your request anyway, visit www.inkblotters.com to see this great replica airplane model. | |
| Parker 45 Ballpoints | |
| 8/9/2000: Berry in Gilroy | |
| Staples has been selling the 45 ballpoints, but they have a plastic lower barrel. The fitted chrome metal tip cone has been replaced by the tacky pressed metal one. They still have the brushed metal top half, but Gillette has cheapened that as well. Lots of Parker ballpoints extend themselves on e-bay, in the "ballpoints" section, but beware of junkers. Stainless steel push tops usually sell in the $20 range. | |

| Working the Big Pen Shows | |
| 8/8/2000: Len Provisor | |
| The DC Pen Show is a different kind of pen show. Thurs/Fri are for those early deals, so it's best to make the most of this time, see those favorite pen dealers you've worked with before to either buy or sell. If you have a pen to offer to a friend that has a pen you want, here's where you can get your best deal. You should make it a habit to make new friendships with many dealers, many of whom are expert in so many different areas...pen shows can also be your best education. If you are walking the floor trying to "shop" for a best price, opportunities are plentiful and you must grasp them as soon as offered. The old saying is "The time to buy that pen you're holding in your hand is when you have it in your hand." Put it down or think about it, it could be gone immediately. Also, concentrate on those dealers who stand behind their pens, and have a known reputation, you'll never be disappointed. Each show I try (ha-ha) to focus on my pen direction, this time I'll try harder. Lately I'm building my "51" and Duofold collection, but only certain models, I'll have many duplicate "51"s and other brands I want to thin out from my collection..... I'm concentrating, really, but also may be looking for some nice Ripples, anything Mandarin, sterling overlays, eyedroppers, safeties, crescents, early Onotos, steel stubs and obliques, early ephemera, signage, ink travelers, old advertising ink blotters, new inks and papers......is that called "focusing"? | |
| Pricing a Pen | |
| 8/8/2000: Allan Fuld | |
| What a pen is worth depends on a number of factors, such as--Do I "Have" to have it? Does it fit into my collection? If it's not great, should I get it now, and have something to show until a better one comes along? Price is only one part of the equation.I've found that if I pay more than I should have, sooner or later I find a bargin, and average out. As far as a Wahl #2 nib-- John Mottishaw probably has one. I think his Email address is "nibs.com" | |
| Ghastley Secrets | |
| 8/8/2000: Will Thorpe | |
| Maybe Ms. Paddon can help me find that Wahl #2 nib I need to finish restoring a green and gold marbled Dixie flat top! So lets talk about a Waterman Patrician in Onyx. Pen is big, marked on barrel USA, nib (which is perfect) is marked Ideal Canada. I believe this is a replacement nib. Cap has no cracks but looking at the inside it may have been repaired or it's just the marbling I see. Couldn't feel any cracks. Has original orange colored section and feed. Emblem on top is there. No cracks around lever box. Pen has ambered but cap and barrel match pretty good. It is a pretty good looking pen. So my question is how much does anybody think the thing is worth. I have an opportunity to buy it and would like some opinions. Glen Bowens book on page 14 shows the pen. The one I've been offered is more like the color of the cap on the one in the book. Value in the book is listed at $1,500. So post or email before I do something crazy. | |

| Parker Pens for sale | |
| 8/8/2000: Gary A. Eaton | |
| I have a spectacular Parker Victory, identical in size and design to the Mark I (pen 6 on 195 of Lambrou's Fountain Pens of the world, only in the light and dark burgany pearl and black marble, identical to the Duofold, pen 7 on page 193 of the same book. The color on this is gorgeous and the pen is in great shape. The clip may not have any brassing, but if does is on the bottom of the ball. None on the band. Nib marked "Parker 14 K Pen, N". Marked "Parker Victory, Geo.S.Parker Reg T.M. The "Parker"and "Victory" are a little worn but still easily visible. Only real flaw is slight oxidation of top and blind caps, probably about 85% good. Pen is Senior length at 5 1/8, but Junior width. Don't really know if they made this in a Senior size. This is a very pretty and rare pen. Has not been resacked. $100 with first class shipping included, you pay insurance if wanted. I always take returns with e-mail notification and within 5 days of receipt. Gladly accept Paypal, and will ship immediately. Checks must clear. Last call on the Black Senior Streamline Duofold, inscribed in small gold block letters "Domerick Tumolo". Imprint clear. Lower cap band 50% brassed, slight brassing on ball of clip, Nib - Parker Arrow U.S.A. pen. Not resacked, Nice pen! $75 post paid. 3) Jade Senior Streamline Duofold, barrel darkened to spinch color as most are. Cap shows band of the jade around cap bands and at top, but some spinaching around middle. Clip has some brassing on the letters and ball but pretty decent. Cap bands show no brassing. Parker Arrow nib. Some oxidation top piece, blind cap better. Has not been sacked. $75 post paid. | |

| PenLovers update | |
| 8/7/2000: Dean Tweeddale | |
| Well fellow penlovers, lots has happened in the last few weeks in my neck of the woods and life. Many storms have caused me to be off-line either from downed lines or from my basement office flooding causing me to have to disconnect the computers for several days. As this entity call the Internet gets more engrained in out everyday lives, and Im not meaning that in a negative way, it becomes so much more cumbersome to have to do without it, even for several hours. Ive always believed that our luxuries become our necessities. Internet access is much like cable TV or an automatic dishwasher. They all started out as luxury things and now have become day to day necessities. Most every household has both a automatic dishwasher and cable TV, luxuries that have become necessities. Will the internet follow suit? I would bet on it. So what about fountain pens a luxury or a necessity? .. What about more than one fountain pen? I guess this might involve a little discussion. PenLovers News, yes there is some. Ive archived the July Bulletin Board so you will find Julys posts in the Archive. Kristi Keller has be kind enough to write a review of the Las Vegas pen show which can be found in the Magazine section of Penlovers. Speaking from Penlovers I very grateful and thank Kristi for her contribution to the site. You could send her a quick thank you email also, youll find her email address in one of the posts below (just click her name to pop up your email client). While on the subject of the Penlovers Magazine I know its a little bland right now but I/we are working on a new design for it and hope to have it up soon. Who is this GHOSTLY Secret person, is it some indivisible pen or something? Next subject is primarily for commercial dealers if you would like to post to the bulletin board but offer no other participation within the bulletin boards discussion please email me off-line before doing so, Ive had several complaints regarding this. Finally PenLovers will be at the D.C. show, this will be exciting for me as I originally thought that I wouldnt be able to make it there. Be sure to come by my table and say hi. Wishing all the best to everyone, Dean | |

| Duofold airplane at DC Pen Show | |
| 8/5/2000: Len Provisor | |
| DC Pen Show is a premier event we all look forward to all year. For buyers and sellers it's a two-day open to the public event, bringing in huge traffic. I'll have the 1928 Parker Duofold airplane on display, and I'll be giving away FREE Duofold airplane ink blotters and historical brochures. The ink blotter art was created by Pen World artist Pier Gustafson. Remember, sales of this plane is restricted to subscription orders only up to the end of this year. After that, you are at the mercy of eBay bidders at likely outrageous prices. If you are thinking of "maybe" getting this plane, act now, year-end is coming quickly. Next year I will have another model from the Series of Parker Pen Company Historical Aircraft. To view this beautiful model, visit my website www.inkblotters.com and click on the image of the airplane for many close-up views. | |

| I keep running across gold pens that have the marks 14 1/8. The only other marks are pat. july 5, 1904. Is this a karat mark and if so what does the 1/8 mean? My first thought was that the pen is 1/8 by wt. 14K. But having second thoughts. Karat gold should have a mfg. mark somewhere. Any help? | |

| Buying/selling "51"s at DC Pen Show | |
| 8/2/2000: Len Provisor | |
| I've been concentrating on Parker "51"s the last few years, I really like the style, especially having many fitted with broad stubs and italics. I'll be looking for unusual "51"s and I'll have some extra First Year models for sale. If you have "51"s, please look me up from Thurs. afternoon. I'm especially looking for a 1946-8 "51" desk pen and holder. Does anyone know if a "51" desk pen was ever made as a Flighter? Wouldn't that be a "hoot"? Another "51" question. I have a set without the gold band on the cap. Was this a prototype or just a low production. No year marking, has "finger clutch" in cap. Look forward to seeing my pen pals in DC. Check out www.inkblotters.com for close-up pictures of the 1928 Parker Duofold airplane. After 12/31/00 no more will be available. Subscription orders only. E-mail for FREE Duofold airplane ink blotter and brochure. | |

| 51 leads | |
| 8/2/2000: Ron Zorn | |
| Marjorie, I am assuming that yours is the click type, though the same may apply to one of the early twist type of pencils. The lead is .036" - translates into our modern day 0.9 mm lead. I tried some 0.9 mm that I have in my 51 pencil, and it works just fine. I would suggest any office supply store, or a place like Office Max or Staples as a source. As for erasers, the Parker Insignia erasers will fit a 51 or a Vac pencil, and won't dry out on you. Ron Zorn | |
| Las Vegas Pen Show | |
| 8/2/2000: Ken Jones | |
| I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended the show last weekend. The show was a great success and we look forward to doing it next year. Attendance almost doubled over last year and I think there was much more energy. I would also like to thank Omas for being our main sponsor and Conway Stewart and Aurora for sponsoring the two breakfast. Without these cash paying sponsors penshows most penshows would not be possible. Once again thanks!!! | |

| I have an old silver or silver-plated pencil I would like to know more about. Near the top is "Pal" written in script. It is etched until about an inch from the bottom where it tapers to the point. It is about 3 and 1/2 inches long and 1/4 inch in diameter. The knob on top turns to provide more lead. Any help would be appreciated. | |
| Actually inside the Duofold airplane | |
| 8/2/2000: Len Provisor | |
| Well, almost the Duofold airplane. Sunday I was at the OshKosh, WI Fly-in, the biggest airshow in the world. I visited the Museum where a 1927 American Airlines Fairchild is on display. I convinced a guard to open the door for my close inspection. State-of-the-art in 1928, but downright scary. Bare metal tubing, canvas and baling wire. Inside is barely 32" wide for two-across passenger seats, and a single metal shell seat for the pilot. The wings folded straight back, was very useful if the pilot had to land on a short meadow too small for a takeoff. No problem, fold the wings back and have a local horse, mule or tractor tow the plane to a larger meadow. With wings folded, this plane could be stored in an area just 14' x 31'. This aircraft also flew the first International U.S. airmail from KeyWest, FL to Havana, Cuba. Visit www.inkblotters.com for close-up pictures of my 18" wingspan replica model of this famous Parker Pen Co. aircraft, personally signed by Geoffrey S. parker, great grandson of George S. Parker. Available by subscription orders only up to the end of this year. On display at DC Pen Show. E-mail for free aircraft historical brochure and ink blotter. | |

| Returned yesterday from the LV Pen Show, and I just wanted to say what a fun show this was. Thank you Jimmy Dolive, Ken Jones, Rick Horne, Boris Rice, Stan Pfeiffer and all those who attended for making this a great weekend. Although this is definitely not the biggest pen show, it is an unsurpassed opportunity to talk to people in depth and at length, and to get some great deals on nice pens. I hope everybody will give this show a chance, and view it as a social occasion too, instead of only as a commercial enterprise. | |

| Dr. Grip refills | |
| 8/1/2000: Nicole | |
| I just found this webpage today. I may be way off here but I figured I would ask anyway. I'm desperate. I'm a pen addict and even worse, a Dr. Grip addict. They just came out with the gel ink Dr. Grip and I am trying to locate the purple gel refill. I would also be interested in locating the purple ballpoint refill they just came out with. Can anyone help me find them? There is no place in Georgia, according to Pilot Pen Co. that sells them. Thanks! | |
| Duofold clip | |
| 8/1/2000: Ron Zorn | |
| Does anyone have an opinion (estimate or whatever) on what the value is of a 20's Duofold SR. clip? Ballpark price would do. Not selling, a friend has one that needs a clip. Thanks in advance. Ron | |

| Duncan wrote :"Parker info? 7/26/2000: I have a 14k ambassador style 75, it has the name "Kathy Larson" engraved on the barrel, did a Mr Larson ever work for Parker? also how common is this type of pen?thanks." According to Parker payrolls for periods 1971 thru 1982 Michael Larson was employed at Janesville in Accounts. As to how rare this model is you will have to ask one of the experts. Hope this helps.
