Chicago Update
      4/30/2001:  Don Lavin
Here is the latest on the Chicago Pen Show. All ads have been placed with the Chicago Sun-Times, Tribune and Pioneer Press as well as some smaller local newspapers and publications. Ads for the show have and will run as many as 5 days in some publications and as a result we have already received a writeup by one of the papers. We get written up often which is nice and very helpful for the dealers, especially on Sunday when the public joins the hardcore collectors before becoming hardcore collectors. I have been asked repeatedly whether it is too late to register for the show and the answer is an emphatic "no". We only require advanced registration for Sunday table holders as there is just so much space which can be used and this year every nook and cranny is filled. We have sold over 190 tables which we have been reluctant to do in the past. The mix is also excellent with about 45 tables taken by retailers and manufacturers, roughly 25%. The balance are vintage dealers, ephemera dealers and antique dealers who bring a mix of items focusing on pens but with a number of watches, lighters, leather goods and other men's collectibles. And some dealers do very well with jewelry - collectors who do well like to pick up gifts for their wives and significant others and wives in attendance have an opportunity to look at objects that do not write. It looks like we will have over 200 people in the hotel before Friday which means we will open the 12th floor trade rooms earlier on Thursday, probably around 2 or 3. Otherwise the lobby of this 5 star hotel will look like a mid-eastern bizarre with people occupying every table and chair and then moving onto the floors, crawling around in search of deals. Not a pretty site but one which I love. And we have arranged to keep the Starbucks counter in the hotel staffed and open well beyond their normal hours - crazed collectors are afraid to blink during the show for fear of missing out on a deal or a feeding frenzy. Oh, the feeding frenzy - occurs most often on Friday afternoons and evenings - new blood appears, drops a bag of pens on a table and the place goes nuts, like sharks moving in for the kill. The poor wild eyed newbie sees bills being thrown at him by vets holding handfuls of pens yelling "how much for all of these?" "Give me your best price" even though the existing price is well below present value. My blood is heating up already. So, if you were thinking about coming to the show, come on. I still am holding a few rooms and there are overflow hotels in the area. And bring the deed to your house for backup. Don

For everyday note taking woth a fountain pen, it is hard to beat AMPAD Gold Fibre pads. They come in both narrow and wide rule.

German Iridium Nib & case
      4/30/2001:  greg
Does anyone know where I might replacement parts (either just the nib or the complete Nib & plastic casing (fine thread) for an older Bombay Company Gift pen? Pen has a steel, plated nib and the Tynes? (spelling?) were bent beyond repair. I'd like to try to find a replacement to mount to the pen. Thanks, Greg

Balloons on pens
      4/30/2001:  Danni Suskin
Does anyone know of a fountain pen that features or featured Hot air or helium balloons? If so, anyone have one for sale?

StylophileS 1999 CD Edition
      4/30/2001:  Len Provisor
This rates a a solid "Wow!" Just received my 1999 edition StylophileS CD Magazine in the mail today, and two minutes later it was on my monitor. I previously missed some of this material from 1999, so this is not only an exceptional bargain at $25., the CD gives me many hours of interesting material to read and view. This is even a great gift for me to give to business clients and friends. Over fifty articles professionally written by Bill Riepl and pen contributors, over 200 images of new and vintage pens. Let me tell you, Bill just ain't no slouch in the digital camera department. His composition of images, pens and backgrounds alone, are a pleasure to view, and as professional as any I've seen in any fountain pen publications anywhere. Thank you guys, great job.

Odd Duofold (?) Pencil
      4/30/2001:  Jan
I picked up a Parker pencil today that has me scratching my head. It appears to be the small sized streamline Duofold. It looks exactly (and I do mean exactly)like the green one in the middle of the top right picture on Page 121 of the F&S Blue Book. It's got the doouble bands, the black cap that holds the clip in place, the longish nose, and the Duofold clip with the patent date. The only thing different is the color, which appears to be a Thrift Time variety. The color looks like it matches the pencil in the middle of the top left picture on Page 123 of the same book. It's cream and brown with flecks of something that looks like gold leaf. It's defintely not the normal Duofold black and pearl color, nor is it the moderne green and pearl. Was Parker known to make Duofolds in this color, or is this pencil a bit of an oddity?

paper
      4/30/2001:  Robert H.
Hi. I'm hoping that someone could help me out with some advice on paper. I have been using a couple of vintage pens (51 & vacumatic) as everyday writers at work and home. These pens write wonderfully! ...as long as I find a paper they agree with. Any suggestions on specific types/brands of notepads for everyday writing that work well with founain pens? (I'm a graduate student, so I'm doing alot of note taking)... Thanks

Ron. The Waterman Liaison is available in Orange Woodgrain Ebonite and Mahogany Ebonite (and Black Resin).

Parker 21
      4/29/2001:  bob
I have picked up several Parker 21's in the past and have noticed that there are two types. A Super and a "regular". The regular has a poor nib and feed while the Super appears to have a 51 nib and feed. Are there any web sites which cover the 21. I would like a list of colors, caps, date made (I have two different arrow clip caps and 2-3 different other caps, so there must be several styles). The Super's write like 51 and are great. The regular 21's ones are the pits. None of my pen books cover the 21. Thanks for any help. Bob

Waterman WHAT?
      4/29/2001:  Ron
Blanked out on this one.... What is the name of the modern Waterman pen that is made out of hard rubber - like the red ripple? I've forgotten the name and would like to keep my eyes open for one.

Colorado Pen
      4/29/2001:  Ron
I remember a thread that ran on this list last fall about Colorado Pens and whether or not they were going out of business (evidence=VERY low stock!). I was in the Philadelphia area over the weekend, and while there went looking for their store in King of Prussia. It was there! The word that I got was that the remaining 20 stores (20/60 - the other 2/3 were closed) were sold on Feb. 1, and separated from the catalog/on-line business. They will be renamed Paradise Pens once the paper work is done for the name change. In the mean time, it was nice to visit a well stocked store and have a chance to talk pens - something rare for a guy from Syracuse!

Balance L. E.
      4/28/2001:  Gary A. Eaton
In answer to the questions from Will: As a Duofold fanatic of about eight or nine years, I have been using Balances regularly for about the last four or five months and really enjoy them. The LE is very very close to the old oversized Sheaffers from the 30's. I find Balances generally to be good writing pens, so no complaints about the nib. The LE seems to hold ink a little longer that the Balance II's which have a tendency to skip if they set a day, or go to half full. As to keeping the cap posted on the back of the pen, that can be a problem on any Balance. There is not a lot of tension between cap and barrel to hold it in place, and you have to watch and re-seat it regularly. I also worry about putting too much pressure on the cap when posting and cracking it. The pointed butt doesn't guide as evenly as pens with a flat backside. Unlike most pens where clip placement allows most of the pen to rest in your pocket, quite a bit of the Balance sticks out, probably well over an inch. This means the bottom can easily shift around in your pocket. This can be a problem because the humped clip provides minimal friction where it bends down to touch the barrel, increasing the risk of losing the pen. This is a flaw of all Balances. I recently thought I had lost one of my older Balance pens. I had leaned over to set my briefcase in the passenger's seat of the car, and the pen must have quietly fallen out. Took me a day and a half to find it, neatly lying beside my seat where it had landed. Carry a pen every day and this was the first time that had ever happened. Despite all of these faults, I really like the pen and keep refilling and using it. Balances may not be practical, but if you love fountain pens, who cares? Wouldn't recommend paying anywhere near the list price for one. I got a great buy on mine at a little over a third of list from Jim Gaston (a great dealer) on the place we may not discuss. Hope that helps.

Nishimura's Mylar Disks
      4/28/2001:  Raymond Wong
Friends of pens: I just have to tell you this. I just got some mylar disks from David Nishimura and spent a few hours polishing some of my pens. It is great. My scratchy pens are smooth like "ice on ice". The nicest thing is that I used only half a disk for smoothing about 10 pens. I am very happy about these disks.

Chicago Pen Show Update
      4/28/2001:  Don Lavin
Just a quick announcement to let people know that I am still holding 5 rooms in my name for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at the Westin O'Hare for the Chicago Pen Show on May 4,5 an 6. If anyone makes a last minute decision to come to the show please contact me so that I can swap out the rooms at the show rate. This year's show has some special treats in store for party animals tiring of looking at pens. A group of collectors going to Buddy Guy's Legends on Friday night on buses provided by the hotel for $20 roundtrip fare, will be pleased to learn that the name entertainer that night is none other than John Mayhall. I still have music of his dating back to the 70s. Buses leave at 6:30 and dinner is available. Admission to the club is $12.00. And the Saturday night jam session is really shaping up. Many musicians will be strutting their stuff in the Executive Forum including the outstanding Jake Engel with FPH of NY on harmonica and the unforgettable D.J. Kennedy on trombone complete with scarves hanging from the slide. Thanks go to Sandy Sandina (guitar and vocals) and Len Provisor (no musical talent whatsoever) for putting this together. Remember, pen shows offer far more than just pens. They provide the greatest venue for social interaction amongst pen collectors. Don

VAC with anchor
      4/28/2001:  Raymond Beurre
I seem to recall a promotion for a butter company back in the late forties using a anchor motif. The Anchor butter company was based in Leeds N.E. England until it was taken over by a large food corporation in the 1960's. I hope that clarifies things.

Vac with anchor
      4/27/2001:  David Nishimura
Duncan's on target here. This particular anchor has nothing to do with Olsen or the Danish Parkers. The 9K mark immediately tells one that it is English, for the English market.

VAC with anchor
      4/27/2001:  Duncan
I believe the pen was a special order, made for a north east of England ship builder, other similar pens are known to exist(maxima set), also Bonhams have had at least one go through there auction house.

Vac with Anchor
      4/27/2001:  Bruce
Does the anchor contain the letters C and O? If so, it would be from the C. Olsens factory in Denmark, makers of Penol and as I understand, licenced to produce Parker pens. Other than that, no ideas.

Proust Ballpoint Needed
      4/27/2001:  Ken Jones
I am in need of a Montblanc Proust Ballpoint. If anyone has one to sell please e-mail me. Thanks Ken Jones Bertrams Inkwell

Vac with 9ct Anchor
      4/27/2001:  Stuart Whyte
Many thanks for the help. Just a little more information to see if it rings any bells. The anchor measures 1" (25mm) x 1/2" (12mm) and is placed immediately to the left of the Parker gold clip, with the top of the anchor about half way down the clip and then extending about 1/2" below the bottom of the clip. This pen has the Parker clip but no additional logo on the barrel. The imprint reads "Made in Canada Parker Vacumatic PAT No 318982 Reg TMS". I cannot see any other markings on the barrel or cap, other than the 9ct stamp on the anchor. The pen is 5 1/4" long with the cap on. Does this help or confuse?

1946 Parker "51" Beechcraft airplane model
      4/26/2001:  Len Provisor
Chicago Pen Show is almost here, in just one more week running May 3 (early arrival play time)thu May 6. I'll have this most unusual model on display. This is the plane that inspired Kenneth Parker to produce the first "51" Flighter fountain pen. Only about 25 left of the first 100 only that will be consecutively numbered. All models will be personally signed by Geoffrey S. Parker, great grandson of George S. Parker. Solid wood construction, 18" wingspan, 30 coats of paint and detailed from original blueprints and Parker family photo archives. This will make an outstanding addition to your Parker collection, and is destined to become very desireable becasue...these will be made by subscription orders only. That means no mass production, produced only to the end of 2001. Last year's Parker Duofold plane resulted in about 120 only, making this an extremely low production. For detailed vintage and actual model images of this Parker "51" Beechcraft, visit my website WWW.INKBLOTTERS.COM Delivery of first production run is anticipated late May, mid-June.

Va with anchor symbol
      4/26/2001:  Len Provisor
David, I think you are correct that this is the symbol of a Danish importer. Why don't you direct this question to Michael Fultz or to Steven Martin at PenBid, based in Denmark. Fraternal emblems would be larger, and are usually made separate from the band decoration and attached to those bands before final assembly.

Vac with Anchor
      4/26/2001:  isaacson
A vac with anchor on the cap. Interesting. Best i recall, the anchor symbol was used by Danish importers of vacs. I've seen anchors on the vac barrel imprint, but never a solid gold anchor on the capband. So, i don't really know. Could speculate it was an option by same importer. Could speculate (as you suggest) it was a later add-on by some other group (perhaps analogous to the fraternal order symbols implanted on a bunch of watermans that will be, per vague rumor, in the Chicago auction). But I'd bet has something to do with the danish vac importer- what the heck was the name- Penol or some such? regards. david

NOS 51s & 75s Etc
      4/26/2001:  Peter Ford
I've just updated my website www.vintagepens.com.au to include some 51's and 75's some of which are NOS. There are 15 different 75's offered. As well I have a RARE Conway Stewart #22 Floral on the Conway page. A.L. reckons only 200 were ever made. I dispute this, but they are rare.

Parker Vacumatic With 9Ct Gold Anchor
      4/26/2001:  Stuart Whyte
Could somebody please help me? I have a vintage green sort of sparkling Parker Vacumatic which has a 9CT gold anchor on the cap. Is this an Parker production or has someone added the gold anchor at a later time?

Oblique Nibs
      4/26/2001:  Fred Krinke
To Bill, Oblique nibs are ground on an angle, it could be left, or right. It is basiclly, an italic nib, in that it gives you a thick or thin line, depending on how you hold the pen. This is like a calligraphic nib. Now, the oblique part comes in, that you can hold the pen at ,say, a 45o angle to achieve the thick/thin line. Most people need to try,use and practice useing this type of nib. Feel free to contact me if you need more info.

Snorkel filling
      4/26/2001:  Randy
Let me wade in on this, and be mindful I am not an expert, but it seems to me that any pen with 50 year old rubber parts should have those rubber parts replaced, simply as a matter of course. After all, it is a relatively inexpensive restoration, no matter if you do it yourself, or hire it done. And if done correctly, may last another 50 years.

Upside-down Snorkel
      4/25/2001:  Richard
I think someone is missing something here. A Snorkel will actually expel ink or water on all but the last 1/4" or so of the downstroke; the system works by compressing the sac until that last little distance, and then as the slot in the outer tube passes the O-ring, pressure is released and the sac fills. If you operate the plunger twice in quick succession with the snorkel immersed, you will indeed be filling the pen on part of the second upstroke--this happens because the sac will not have had time to expand on its own. Mike, the sac should not adhere to the walls of the inner metal tube. If any part of the sac is hard, you need a new sac. And you probably also need a new O-ring; they're notorious for hardening with age. You might or might not need a new blind-cap gasket or point holder gasket, or both.

Snorkel Trouble, well Solved
      4/24/2001:  mike
Well...at least part of the trouble with the pen is that part of the bladder was hard. The part around the top hole was petrified. The rest of the bladder is supple, and quite nicely adhered to the walls of the tube. The seals on it seem quite intact, at least according to the tests in the pen repair manual I use. Looks like another mess! Thanks for your help, though, everyone!

oblique nibs

Would someone give a brief explanation of oblique nibs, their advantages and uses. Thanks

Pen Search

Am looking for newer versions of Waterman Patrician. Green Ball Point, and Red Fountain Pen (F or M nib.)

Confused Snorkel ?
      4/24/2001:  Stephen Lam
Mike, if it really fills on the upstroke, you can rule out a malfunctioning bladder or blocked snorkel or O ring. If there is something wrong with any of the above, it won't fill at all. Assuming that it really does not fill on the downstroke, you should examine the little pressure release slit where the blind cap meets the plunger casing. That slit may have some dirt/grease/other stuff on it, disabling its ability to release pressure at the end of the downstroke. Clean it and see if that works.

Sheaffer Snorkel
      4/24/2001:  Fred Krinke
To Mike; It sounds to me that the plunger, when pushed in, is not releasing the pressure that collapses the sac inside, and so it is operating like a hyperdermic needle, it's best to check out the "O" ring, as well as the sac,I know, not an easy job, but I think if you check these out, and make sure that the rubber is still soft, in the "O" ring, and the sac, is not too hard, or cracked .Give me a shout if you need more info.

Confused Snorkel
      4/24/2001:  mike
Hello, especially to all those Sheaffer Snorkel folks out there in FountainPenLand! I bought, for a mere $6.80, a grey Snorkel, nothing fancy, but it is functional. I can get it to take water and shoot across the room, in fact. The problem is that Sheaffer Snorkels are famous for "filling on the downstroke." This one bucks the trend! It fills on the UPSTROKE, and when the touchdown filler is returned, a jet comes rushing forth from the pen. Can anyone tell me what might cause this poor Snorkel to be so confused? I am hoping that I will not have to take it all apart, for I have had some pretty bad luck getting these fussy pens back together again and working. Anyone able to assist me?

parker lucky curve #3
      4/23/2001:  Stephen
I am seeking any information on this pen. I have this pen and would like to know about it. It is dated 6-30-91 & 1-3-05. On the styllus is marked Lucky Curve #3. What is the value, who can help. Thank-you very much.

New Conklin Nozaks
      4/23/2001:  Dean Tweeddale
Stephen, I can’t really give an accurate comparison between the new Nozak and the vintage one. The new one is not designed to be an exact replica in any way. It has some of the characteristics of the vintage ones but is a modern pen in all its functions. I would tend to guess that a well-tuned vintage Nozak or modern Nozak will write equally well and the vintage one may have a little more flex in the nib. However this is just a guess as the vintage ones that we had for photos we were not able to ink and write with. I would tend to agree that a near mint vintage one would cost a bit more than the new one. Dean

Parker 75 service
      4/23/2001:  Danni Suskin
I have aquired a nice Parker 75, but it needs a little service. The nib appears very loose and is not very smooth to write with (Medium nib). I'm new to all of this. Please advise where I can have it serviced. Thanks

Pens in New mexico
      4/22/2001:  Len Provisor
Mary, you have to make some time to get up to Santa Fe, about an hour's ride up one of the most beautiful scenic drives in America. Visit my friend Neal Frank and his wife Violet at Santa Fe Pens in a small shopping mall just a few blocks from the town square. Get your pen fix, then plop down on a bench in the square...the air, the sun, the sky, the light...it's magnificent. There's an antique store in the magnificent La Fonda Hotel, right on the corner. I think you can tell I liked my vacation there a few years ago.

There is one good pen store in Albuquerque- "Pen and Pad". Also, if you travel north about one hour to Santa Fe, there is "Santa Fe Pens". They have both new and vintage pens. Pen and Pad has only new pens.

New Conklin Nozaks
      4/21/2001:  Stephen Lam
Dean, can you give your opinion on the relative merits of the new Nozak and the vintage Nozac. Let's compare a new one with say an oversized vintage nozac in good working order, which should command about the same price if not less (of course I am not talking about a really mint vintage nozac which could cost a bit more, depending on the colour).

New Conklin Nozaks
      4/21/2001:  Dean Tweeddale
Mike, I think that you will like the new Conklin we had one for review and gave it great reviews. Nice size, great color (I am partial to the tortise/blue one), and it writes very well. You can read our review and see more images in the Stylophiles Archive at this link: http://www.PenLovers.net/stylophiles/1jan2001/jan_2001_conklin_nozac.htm Hope this helps in your decision. Dean

Wanted- Pens & Holders for 1940 Desk Set
      4/20/2001:  Bob H.
I have a double pen desk set base from the year 1940 that commemorates the 80th year anniversary of the Pony Express. It has a photo engraving of FDR and the VP or Postmaster General. I need two vintage holders and pens to go with my base and its solid brass swivels. The male threads on my swivels are a larger diameter than every thing I have found except a poor condition government pen set.

Chicago Pen Show Update
      4/20/2001:  Don Lavin
Well, I am presently overwhelmed with the response to the Chicago Pen Show to date. As of this morning we have almost 190 tables signed up and our greatest room reservations to date and there is still 3 weeks to go before the show starts. Unfortunately the hotel is almost filled and our block expires today at 11:59. So if you are planning on attending the show and have not yet made your hotel reservation please call immediately. To protect late comers I am reserving an additional 10 rooms in my name for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Therefore, I can swap out rooms over the next 2 weeks. The auction has over 320 lots and is currently being listed on PenBid.com. Attendees this year will include our first collectors from Scotland and Ireland and we just received reservations from Japan and Rio as well as new collectors from Sao Paolo. The international flavor of our event never ceases to amaze me seeing as how the first "long distance" traveler to our show came from northern Indiana in 1982. When Max Steidman from Toronto heard about our show and decided to attend in 1983 we were semi-shocked, but then the floodgates opened and the rest is history. So come and join the party - you will not be disappointed. Don

Duofold Sr. Nib Request
      4/20/2001:  Randy
I will be posting this on other newsgroups, so I apologize for the repetetion. Here is the story, I have a Canadian Duofold Sr. Lapis that has wonder ful color, but after a year of struggling, I just do not like the nib. It is a broad (perhaps stub) with flex, and it lays down enough ink to paint the stripes on the highway. Anyway, in order to keep this pen as close to original as possible, I am seeking a Canadian F or small M nib to replace this one. I would prefer a trade if there is anyone out there that likes this nib, and had an exchangable nib, however I would also consider a straight purchase. Email back line Randy Clifford

Balance Pencil Help!
      4/19/2001:  Gary A. Eaton
I recently lucked out and purchased a spectacular oversized Sheaffer Balance set in the red-veined silver and grey marble. Only one problem - the pencil was missing the back tip. From other pencils I know there is a screw that appears to holds the tip on from the inside of the barrel. Anybody know which way this turns and are there any other mine fields I should know about? Sounds simple, but none of mine budge, and do not want to break anything. Second and most important - anybody have a wreck in this color pencil they would be willing to part with? I have the two other sizes in the same pattern, and all of the tips look to be about the same size, so I presume one size fits all, but again, can't tell until I get one off. Would appreciate help from any Balance experts out there.

Re: Conklin Nib
      4/19/2001:  Northwest Pen Works
Hi Rick, It seems I have had and have seen Conlklin Symetrics with cushion point nibs in them before. I've seen so many pens over the years it all becomes a blur. There is also a good possibility that the nib was damaged and replaced sometime in the pens younger days. I think the repairmen just used the best possible replacement they had on hand or whatever they could get from the company. If the nib works well for you it's mind over matter. If you don't mind that it may not be a correct original nib, it shouldn't matter. Michael

Thanks Stephen Lam and Bob H.

Thanks for the wealth of information from Stephen and Bob. I think I will investigate a bit more before doing anything. I have to admit what you've said is news to me. There is so much to learn in this hobby of ours.

Sanford uni-gel *fine* point?
      4/18/2001:  Ari
I've been searching everywhere for a Sanford uni-gel or uniball Gel pen (or refill), black, with a FINE point! Their website says they make pens like this, and I actually have one that I found in a meeting room at work, but no one seems to sell them! One can find Sanford gel pens in medium or "bold" tips almost anywhere in various colors, so that's not the problem. I've tried them, but since I like to write small they are too wide for me. The pen says "Sanford uni-ball UM100" and I've seen that the refill should be #60176. I've yet to find a place that actually sells either the pens or the refills, so let me know! Please email ahuostil@san.rr.com Thanks! - Ari

Esterbrook Cartridges
      4/18/2001:  Will Thorpe
Esterbrook Cartridges 1/27/2001: Will Thorpe Reference the Jan 18 post on cartridges for Esterbrooks. I did some highly scientific testing with various cartridges. Watermans were to long. Sheaffers are slightly to large in diameter. However standard (international) cartridges are they same length as the old Esterbrrok cartridges with the yellow ends. Both are tapered cartridges and the same diameter. The standard has a crimped neck, the Esterbrrok didn't. First pen tested was a metal cap Safari. This pen has a small well at the back of the section with a small metal protrusion down in the well. Standard cartridge went on by hand pressure just fine. Neck did not fill the well though. Second cartridge in the barrel keeps pressure on the punctured cartridge and I had no leaks. Second pen was a late model cartridge that has a plastic protrusion sticking out of the section. I touched up the protrusion with sandpaper to sharpen the edges a bit. I put on a standard cartridge by hand. Took a bit of a shove as you actually stretch the cartridge neck a bit to get it on. Barrel was to short to hold a spare cartridge. I cut a flexible Q-Tip shaft as a filler to keep pressure on the cartridge. Works just fine. I have carried and used both pens for several days incuding a couple of miles horseback. No leaks. End of report!

Cartridges to fit Esterbrook?
      4/18/2001:  Matt B
I have a later model Esterbrook (not a J, SJ, or the like) that takes a single cartridge. So far, I have found that Parker cartridges can be modified to fit, although leaks may occur if the "rig" isn't just right. Neither Waterman nor Schaeffer cartridges appear to fit. Can anyone recommend a modern cartridge that will fit a later Esterbrook?

Conklin Cushon Point
      4/18/2001:  Stephen Lam
Rick, some Enduras came with non-Endura nibs too. However, these should be Toledo nibs. You normally find Cushon points on later Conklins, for example nozacs, although some nozacs were fitted with Toledo nibs too. I think there was no "Cushion Point". I have many Cushon Points but have yet to find a "Cushion Point". So yours is not that rare after all.

Lever /Crescent filler and Raymond's Question
      4/17/2001:  Stephen Lam
Raymond, if do not find the shape of a crescent filler unacceptable, I suggest you try one. The crescent filler mechanism is simpler than that of a lever filler and thus has less chance of playing up. However, I see no reason why you should go for the Visconti crescents. Why not choose a vintage Conklin. You can come by a good specimen of a 20 or 30 for a fraction of the price of a modern crescent. If on the other hand Conway Stewart is your brand, why not choose a vintage Conway Stewart 100 if you prefer a large one. Or one of the many smaller models made of coloured materials. These are available, some in mint conditions, at prices much lower than the modern Conway Stewarts. I am sorry I am biased against modern re-creations of vintage pens and Conway Stewart and Conklin happen to be among my favourite brands.

Modern Lever Fillers
      4/17/2001:  Bob H.
Raymond, Delta uses Lever Fillers on some of its pens: The Colosseum and Demo, the Pompei and Venezia, some Julius Caesars, some nazareths, some Lugdunums, and some Israel 50th Anniversary. The Sheaffer W.A. Sheaffer Commemorative and LE Balance. Crescents, older than levers ( and more efficient as well) can be found on Visconti Copernicus and Stipula Saturno. Most modern pens which have built in fillers seem to be either Piston or Plunger. There are a few Button fillers around (Bexley Deluxe Demo) and Ancora has that pump-syphon system. This isn't a recommendation for any of them, mind you. Having said that I like the LF Nazareth, Copernicus, and the Sautrno - haven't tried the others. Vintage LF's are probably a better buy. Happy Pen Hunting, Bob

Lever Fill
      4/17/2001:  Raymond Wong
Thanks Will for the info. The lever filler that I am drooling over is the Conway Stewart Writing Equipment Society "20th Anniversary" Fountain Pen. Do you know of any other modern pens that have the lever filler? BTW, I love your stories. Please keep them coming. Raymond.

Lever Fillers
      4/17/2001:  Will Thorpe
In response to Raymonds question. I believe cartridge fillers will outlast them all since there are no moving parts. I have a couple that I use for travel since cartridges are so easy to carry. However cartridge pens limit the choice of ink. Lever fillers are great, more choice of ink. As you know most of my pens are levers. I use on a weekly/monthly basis lever fillers from the 1920's (Wahl, Sheaffer), from the 1930's (Sheaffer) and the 40's/50's (Esterbrook). Most of these pens have the original lever and pressure bar. Now you do have a rubber sac that needs replacing every decade or two but that's easy. I believe I'd chance a lever filler outlasting a piston filler. Notice how many comments are on this board, and others, about piston problems. The piston is more complicated than a lever and more complicated things generally have more trouble than simple things (one of my engineering laws). Now this doesn't mean piston fillers won't last a long time. Believe it or not I have a couple of Montblancs that are 26 and 28 years old. The pistons work fine, very smooth, never leaked. My piston fillers hold more ink than my lever fillers. So what is this lever filler you have your eye on? Vintage or new?

      4/17/2001:  Paul Bankston
To James Goodwin: I've had very good results with P51s from Fountain Pen Hospital. Give them a try; otherwise, the Parker Service Dept. in Janesville, WI is still working, I think. This should be a very easy fix.

Conklin nib
      4/17/2001:  Rick Kalamaya
I new to collecting fountain pens. Recently I acquired a Conklin. But I am curious about the nib on the pen. The pen itself is a Conklin Symetrik from what I can tell from pictures I see. It is celluloid very pretty grey and burgundy plastic with rounded top and bottom. 5 1/8 " capped. On the pen it reads Conklin, Toledo, Oh, Endura with a number D 83592. Then it has a patent info. The problem is that I am told that if it is an Endura it should have an Endura nib. But my nib says Conklin then Cushon Point ( Not Cushion! ) and it als says 14 kt. What gives with this nib? Any insight would be appreciated.

McLaren MFP-850
      4/17/2001:  Paul Bankston
Hi Steve, I've written a few things at Pentrace regarding the McLaren MFP-850, which I purchased from eurosuperstore.com a couple of months ago. Initially I had flow problems, stemming from the fact that the nib/feed wasn't screwed tightly enough into the titanium section. Once I got that figured, the pen performed very nicely. It's a heavy pen. Titanium is light, but there's a lot of titanium in this pen. The flow is generous (mine being a medium, comparable with a Parker medium). The nib is not very flexible; comparable with a Parker Centennial Duofold nib, and less flexy than a Pelikan M1000 nib. It feels very much like my Waterman Man100 in its flex. (But a little more weight behind the nib.) Hope this helps. I love this pen; it looks and feels like it could withstand re-entry and last into the next millennium. (Big hint: Don't lose the little O-ring that seals the pump filler into the titanium section.)

oblique pen
      4/17/2001:  Laurie
I am trying to find a place to purchase replacement nibs for my oblique pen holder. The nibs say "Brause 66EF Iserlohn." Can anyone help me? I haven't purchased any of these for about 4 years and have lost the catalog from where I ordered them. Thanks for your time.

Questions
      4/17/2001:  Jan
Question #1: In the early 70's, Parker made a mechanical pencil that used a standard jotter body and was refilled with a lead-filled cartridge that was almost identical to a jotter ballpoint refill. Do any of you know where one could obtain extra replacement lead cartridges for this contraption? Question #2: In my travels, I've acquired a couple of otherwise normal-looking ballpoint pens, except that they've got a silver filigree on the lower half of the barrel. One of these is a Parker Jotter that came with a matching pencil, the other is a circa 1970's Sheaffer. I suspect the silver is an aftermarket feature, but I'd like to know the real story. Can anybody fill me in?

Pen Shows

ID Lady Parker Vac-per John Malony
      4/17/2001:  isaacson- lost in vacumania
Hi John. John found Ladies Vacumatic 1942, black with vertical lines suggesting shadowwave plastic. Asks what is up? Glad you found one. I have the same pen. Probably. I will go so far as to suggest that your pen has a capband composed of thin horizontal lines (not ///\\\/// of a Major, or the <<<===>>><<<=== or typical Ladies Pen Debutante). FIRST. Shadowwaves were made in 1942. They are single jewel pens. They do have, usually, the weird capband (not a true 'jewelers'band). I have seen a couple in gray and in brown. Not seen the other colors, but cannot rule them out. SECOND More to the point, 1942 was a weird year for vacs. In fact, most years are weird years for vacs. SEVERAL pens cropped up as Oddities in 1942 with that lined capband. Beyond the gray and brown shadowwaves (and maybe the black- IF that is what you have), i have seen quite a number of pens done in Duofold plastic (earlier post on this) but with Vac imprint, nib,clip- BUT again with the slightly faceted blindcap of duofold- not the round butt of a single jewel 1942 vac. all have the lined capband. AND, getting to my own black ladies pen- I own one really weird one. Bought it as part of a set in an old box. I doubt tampering, but who knows. It is a black short debutante with the lined capband.1942 single jewel of course. BUT, the plastic appears to have vertical clear lines. Mind you- these are not the vertical waves of shadowwave, or the clear stripes of the early 1934-1935 vacs which did come in vertical stripes. The 1934 pens had wide swaths at some angles as the clear lined didn't occur all the way around. BUT on this 1942 black debutante, the lines do go all the way around. So at first i figured i have a black vac in Black duofold plastic, which like the colord vacs in duofold plastic has stripes all the way around. But, all my other duofold-plastic VACS have faceted blind cap. This one was round. I wasn't sure (maybe still not) if this was such a vac in black duofold material but with the faceted blindcap replaced by round typical black blindcap- or if the "FUSION" of duofold parts and vac parts that occurred on these weird 1942 pens was such that the round cap was original. If your pen has true clean vertical stripes- you likely have an uncommon black vac in black duofold plastic. If it is really shadowwavy plastic, rest assured that single jewel vac shadowwaves were made (scarce) in 1942- all i've seen have the lined capband- so far. I would like to see pic (backchannel fine). If yours is black shadowwave plastic, it is a color I don't have yet in this model (shadowwaves were made in black- i just haven't seen the weird 1942 style in black yet). I would trade another good vac, or buy it- if available. Best regards. David

smoothness- hi rod
      4/17/2001:  david i
Hi rod. Didn't know richard was "the pro". Glad to hear, of course, from someone with real experience. Most of us are, at heart, hack-amateur-newbies in one respect or another. Glad that your 18k aurora is great writer- but i tend to be chronically suspicious that "all else is the same" with two pens. Soooo many variables with pens. And the lingo? I still get plenty of it wrong. Learning is half the fun. I agree with Richard. Regards. David

Pen show
      4/17/2001:  Ron Meloche
I had heard that in the past there was a pen show in San Francisco. Is there going to be one there this year. If so when? Or Phoenix I am maybe grasping at straws but having experienced my first one at Manhatten Beach I do not know if I can wait for another one. I cannnot however travel to to far from San Diego. Also I now belong to the S.C.P.C.C and am looking for any one in the San Diego area to talk pens. Ron Meloche

ultrasonic cleaners
      4/17/2001:  Ron Meloche
Being fairly new to pen collecting I have so faR collected abot 70 pens. Some of them are in need of work. I have replaced some sacs. A couple of the nibs I ended up soaking for many hours. I was wondering if an ultrasonic cleaner would be nice to have? If so what price? What manufacturer? What size? Where to purchase? Thank you Ron Meloche

Lever Fill
      4/16/2001:  Raymond Wong
Most modern pens use converters/cartridges/pistons. I am wondering if lever filling mechanisms are not as popular because they are more expensive, more fragile or less reliable or what? Can I expect a lever filling mechanism to last as long as a piston, or an aerometric converter? Collector/users like us probably flush our pens more often than others and the durability of the filling mechanism is important. I have my eyes on a lever filling beauty. So I am just curious.

Thanks Dean for the Duetto info. I have read and heard great things about it. The only thing I was uncertain was whether it has a screw cap or not. I love screw caps. It looks like I should put it on my "drool" list.

anyone know a source of black, broadpoint parker refills??

Duetto
      4/16/2001:  Dean Tweeddale
Raymond,
The Stipula Duetto is a screw cap and I must say a very nice pen, especially considering the price. Check out our review of the Duetto in Stylophiles at this url: http://www.PenLovers.net/stylophiles/1jan2001/jan_2001_duetto.htm
The Duetto has Stipula's large 18kt nib and I have found it to be a smooth consistant writer. Dean

McLaren MP-850
      4/16/2001:  Steven Goldstein
I am looking at one of these to buy, and wondered if anyone had experience with this pen. Specifically, how flexible is the nib, and how generous is the inkflow. Comparisons to Pelikans, Montgrappas, Watermans, Graf Von Faber-Castells etc would be appreciated.

Duetto
      4/16/2001:  Raymond Wong
Hi All: I heard a lot about the Stipula Duetto. Can anyone tell me whether the Duetto cap is the screw-on type or just pushed and clicked on. I cannot make it out from the pictures on websites. Any experience with the pen would be greatly appreciated.

Re; Ignorance (Martin)
      4/15/2001:  Richard
For your price range, you might look seriously at the Pelikan 300 or 600 series, depending on the size you need. Pelikans are classic (which is ipso facto classy, as many 'fancy" pens are not), they are reliable, and they write well.

Ignorance
      4/15/2001:  Martin
Hello, all... First off, I admit to being quite ill informed on fountain pens, but I have a little problem. I must purchase a nice pen for a friend for his birthday coming up next weekend. I had thought of picking up the Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart edition from Mont Blanc, but to my dismay, I've seen nothing but negative posts about Mont Blanc in general. So, I have to consider other options, but I do not know where to go. This being a base for the professionals, I thought maybe someone would be good enough to offer up a suggestion to me by email. I have a $300 spending limit, and I need something small, with a fine tip that writes well and has somewhat of a classy feel to it. Suggestions are very much appreciated! m

Pens For Sale
      4/15/2001:  Bill Riepl
OK! Here's the deal..... Got some last second expenses connected with the printing on the CD. So..... In a frantic effort to spare the plastic from further abuse, I'm offering the following pens, BUT...... I need to sell quick, and have payment by the end of the week. Hence the (what seem to me) attractive, fire sale type prices. Delta Nautilus, Red and vermeil. This is one of the steel nib versions, but the nib is a Mottishaw fine stub. Writes very nice! Medium size pen. I've got the box and papers for this one, it's used, but not abused. $100 Visconti Manhattan, green stripe. Just like the Vacumatic material. Plunger vac style filler. This one has a Broad nib, also a nice writer, but I notice I haven't used it in months, so it's been declared surplus under the current circumstances! As above, I've got a box and so forth, and it's used, but in very good condition. $150 Parker Vacumatic, Maxima, brown pearl, Canadian. What can I say...... I hate to sell it, etc, etc, etc. This pen is very nice, unrestored, but has a wonderful flexible nib, on the wide side of medium, and a W feed to keep up with it. Speedline filler. It has an engraving, RP Stewart. some brassing around the edges of the bottom tassie, and half the blue paint missing from the diamond clip. Black jewels top and bottom, but a striped section. A nice, if not perfect Maxima, and would probably, given the nib, make a nice user. $300 Parker Duofold Jr Mandarin. Not the hottest Mandarin I've seen, but still, not too bad. Lots of brassing on the clip and band, and a hairline crack in the cap lip that's visible due to the color. It looks like it goes from the lip to just a bit above the band. Good color on the cap and barrel, the cap top is faded a tiny bit from black, the blind cap is nice and dark. Button filler is unrestored. Nice imprint. The nib is a medium, and looks almost like the tip bends slightly to the left. BUT, it feels smooth, and it's very slight, I don't know if it's damaged, or just the way the nib ended up after years and years of use. So, not a prize specemin, but if you want an affordable Mandarin, here you go! $125 Now, the sum total of these pens is exactly what I need to pay off the printers without having to resort to drastic measures. What am I saying? Drastic measures? What would YOU call selling pens? Actually, it's a tiny bit over, so you can try haggling a bit if you feel I haven't priced these to move. Buyer to pay shipping via USPS insured Priority mail, should run about $6, about $5 on the Mandarin, Visconti and the Delta.

Research Triangle Pen Club (NC) - 4/22 Meeting
      4/15/2001:  Ross
The Research Triangle Pen Club (NC) will hold it's next meeting 3 PM, Sunday, at a new location. Our search for windows, seats, and a central location has brought us to Vincent's Pizza (was Pie Works) at the corner of Main and Broad Street in Durham. It's right next to Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, and close to our old location (the Regulator), Duke's East Campus, and Wellspring. As a topic - bring your three favorite pens and be ready to explain why they ranked so high. And we'll, as usual, have paper, ink, and lots of pens that anyone wants to sell or trade. If anyone needs directions, please contact me (rossmck@mindspring.com). Ross

Anyone seen a pen like this?
      4/15/2001:  Bruce
I just came across a very tiny pen. The nib says BABY FINE. The only imprint on the barrel is ENHUR (a missing B perhaps?). Closed length is 2 3/4", widest cap diameter is 3/8". The clip looks like a copy of a ca. 1939 Parker but with design down the center instead of the Parker name. Same Vac jewel design on top. This is definitely a cheap pen in a black and white lizard skin pattern, made out of molded plastic with a designed veneer overlay. But cute. Looks like it could be cartridge fill, if one could find one small enough. My friend was given this pen as a child by her father who traveled a lot... about 40 years ago she thinks. Any ideas?

ID for Lady Vac
      4/14/2001:  John Maloney
I picked up an unusual 1942 Parker Lady Vacumatic. It is all black, but has a visulated part in the barrel that contains lines that appear almost like the pattern seen on the Shadow Wave. Is this in fact a Shadow Wave, or did Parker have a unique name for this pattern on the Lady Vac series? Thanks for your help.

wa sheaffer pen co.
      4/14/2001:  Cory
I found a pen at an antique shop, it's and old sheaffers pen with a ring top or eyelet and it is sort of a marbly green in color. It says WA SHEAFFER CO on the barrel. Also the ends are flat. The nib reads Sheaffers 46 special. It is 4 1/2 inches with the cap on. The pen shows 2 dates 1908 and 1914. Can you tell me anything on the pen?

Re nib smoothness (Lurker)
      4/14/2001:  Richard
When I say "smoothness," I'm referring exclusively to the ease with which I can move the nib across the paper. For all meaningfully measurable values of this number, any usefully hard metal (steel, ruthenium/osmim/iridium alloys, etc.) will behave the same, as a function of its surface size, shape, and polish. (In my experience, gold tends to feel a little "reluctant" no matter how well polished it is; but gold is not a usefully hard metal, which is why gold nibs are tipped with hard alloys.) If we're discussing the overall writing experience of a given nib, then other factors such as flexibility--and even the pen that carries the nib--do without question enter the equation. Also among those factors are the user's personality and the intended use of the nib/pen. What this all means is that we'll probably never reach a clear consensus on the issue; it's too subjective. But it's great fun discussing it.

Parker 51. For Sale.
      4/14/2001:  Douglas Vinayak.

nib smoothness
      4/14/2001:  Lurker
Looks like there is a bit of confusion here due to imprecise definitions of terms. If "smooth" is taken to mean the amount of friction between nib and paper, indeed the nature of the tipping material matters and the nature of the nib body does not. If, on the other hand, "smooth" is used in the sense of a car having a smooth ride, then the mechanical properties of the nib body are a major factor. Perhaps for clarity it would be best to keep "smooth" as the antonym for "scratchy", and find other ways to describe the yield, flex, elasticity, resilience, or whatever else you want to call the "suspension" of a pen.

Nib expert
      4/13/2001:  Rod
Well, David (isaacson 4/11) you should be happy now, since I suspect that Richard (4/12) IS a nib expert. Richard F. Binder repairs pens and knows about what he is talking. I am rarely at a loss for words - I just wish that they were more often the right words. I am relatively new to fountain pens, so I have not learned the 'lingo' yet. I understand that the tiping material determines how smooth the tip glides across the paper. All I was trying to convey is that in my limited experience an Aurora 18k nib offers ME a better writing experience than an Aurora 14k nib. Since these two nibs fit the same pens and are the same size and shape, then I have no reason to believe that they have different tiping material. So, my personal experience is that I was able to write better with the 18k nib compared to the 14k nib of the same type (in this case an Extra Fine). Richard, my Carved Obsidian is number 406 (while yours was purchased much earlier) and I love the 14k Stub nib - very smooth!

Stylophiles CD Rom
      4/12/2001:  Dean Tweeddale
Hi Everyone
Well after many sleepless night of image editing and coding and re-coding Bill (of Stylophiles fame) and I have published (well its at the replicating company now) a Stylophiles CD. We have taken all the issues from 1999, the earliest year for which we have a complete set of files, and put them all on a compact disk. This CD will run on both Windows and Mac platforms, through your regular internet browser program. It's no different than viewing Stylophile's Magazine online, except that the images load MUCH faster! We've also included an alphabetical article index to make finding one particular article easier.

Seven issues, January, February, March, April, June, July, and September.
Just some of the articles:
Delta Astra, Bexley Goldline, Chilton Pen Co, Hero Pens, Joy of Flex, Montblanc Meisterstuck, 60 Years of Pelikan, Sheaffer Snorkel, Visconti Voyager, and, as they say on the late night infomercials, Much, much more! We're doing a limited pressing, we wanted to make sure we weren't using unsold CDs as coasters and skeet targets for the next ten or so years. Of course they'll be available online, but we plan to also offer them for sale at pen shows. The CDs are priced at $25, shipping is $3.50 domestic, via USPS priority mail, overseas shipping is $10.00.

For the complete story go to Penlovers homepage and click on the CD in the middle. We are confident that you will enjoy this CD. Dean Tweeddale

chicago pen show
      4/12/2001:  isaacson
It's good to hear from Don that things are gearing up for a nice penshow in Chicago. Was there just for one day last year and had great time. Plan to be there by thursday this time. So, Don- make sure you have some nice vacumatics in the auction. I'll likely try for the one with the big red nose, as it is. Regards. David

nib flex/smoothness
      4/12/2001:  Richard
I must add my voice in disagreement with Rod (4/8) in re nib smoothness. The smoothness of any nib, reduced to its essence, is a function of the size, shape, and surface polish of the nib's tip. It has nothing to do with the metallic composition of either the nib itself or of the tipping material, if any. The reason gold nibs sold in many European countries have historically been 18K (750/1000) while US gold nibs have been 14K (585/1000) is that the laws of some countries do not permit the lower gold content. It's too bad, really, because 14K alloys can be made more resilient, which means that as a class the cheaper alloys can make better nibs - especially better flex nibs - than their richer siblings.

Parker 51 Flighter
      4/12/2001:  James Goodwin
I need help. My Parker 51 Flighter FP's threads on which you screw the FP section is worn out and I cannot screw it properly. Whom do I send that section for repair?

Need a Parker T-1 nib screw.
      4/12/2001:  Bruce Pasarow
I need a nib set screw for a Parker T-1 titanium fountain pen. The screw goes into the feed, and can be turned to adjust the nib size and ink flow. The T-1 was made for only a year or so beginning in 1970, so this part may be a bit hard to find. I'm looking to contact someone who can either provide the screw, or a suggestion for where else to go for help. Thanks, Bruce

Chicago Pen Show
      4/11/2001:  Don Lavin
I have now signed up over 180 tables for the Chicago Pen Show guaranteeing another sell out. I am pleased to state that we will have a number of new exhibitors from out of the country including Australia, South America, Italy and Germany. Dean has some interesting prospects for a promotion on Sunday, May 6, and it should be very well received. Thanks Dean! I have possession on many of the pens which will be in the auction and I will begin posting pics in addition to those already on our web site so keep checking for updates. Jim Dolive and Total Office Products will be sponsoring our coffee service on Sunday and giving away items as door prizes. Thanks Jim. Every day I receive e-mails from new collectors planning on attending the show and that is one reason why I have a seminar on Saturday morning on helping new collectos and/or attendees in navigating a pen show. We want the show to be the best positive experience we can offer. And thanks to local collectors there will be a planned group outing to the Buddy Guy's Legends Blues Club on Friday night at 7:30. Cost is $20 for the Westin shuttle, $12 admission to the club and whatever you want to spend on food and beer. Then on Saturday night an informal jam session in the hotel featuring anyone with musical talent who wants to join in. So if you have not yet made plans to attend, consider doing so now before our room block is completely sold out.

nib flex/smoothness
      4/11/2001:  isaacson
I would respectfully disagree with Rod (4/8/01) - paraphrasing "all else being equal , 18k nibs are more smooth than 14k". Now i'm no nibologist and am happy to hear from a nib expert, but the composition of the nib itself has nothing to do with "smoothness", unless we are maybe using the terms differently. How a pen writes , of course, has multiple factors- smoothness of the tipping, character of the nib metal, interaction with nib and feed. Obviously has little to do with cost- which is why often a goldplated nib on a $30 Phileas writes better than a $10,000 parker modern gold snake. And I will agree that the metal content and annealing process affect the manner in which a nib can be made "flexible", but none of the above has anything to do with smoothness- which ultimately is a function of the shaping and polishing of the tipping material. This material is often referred to as "iridium", though if i recall one of mr mottishaw's articles (think it was him) there wasn't that much iridium in tips even by the 1940's, never mind now. Fact is I have steel nibbed (no iridium) Esterbrooks that are more smooth than modern 18k, "iridium tipped" nibs (i know this proves nothing as I haven't shown that all else was equal between these two pens), but the 18k and 14k parts of nibs don't even contact paper- so no role on smoothness. To the degree that the 14k/18k affect other aspects of writing besides smoothness (flex, sproing, etc), i would argue that the annealing process and shape has more to do with those aspects than does the gold content. It has been argued by some that the only reasons for 18k are European Policy that only 18K or better can be called "gold" in advertisements, and for prestige. And those be my opinions. regards.david

51 Flow
      4/11/2001:  Ran Sheller
Hello Mostly I read and learn but today I would appreciate help with a lack of flow in a parker 51. I believe it to be a OBB purchased in England and brought to me by my brother. Pen has been properly cleaned and filled. It feels dry across the paper no matter what type of surface. I understand that the pen has to held at a certain angle to flow and write properly. I have tried many angles. If nothing else I would appreciate the name of a 51 pensmith to contact about repair. Thanks for the help. Ran Sheller

re: Waterman Opera
      4/9/2001:  Waco Johnny D
I'd add that it's common for these pens to leave the factory with nibs closed tight at the tip, which means little or no flow unless you press hard. For a heavy-handed writer this will be ok, but others may have to do a nib adjustment per instructions in "Da Book" (FDubiel@aol.com).

Also note that these are long pens and may not seat fully into the pocket of a dress shirt; they definitely won't in L.L.Bean and Land's End dress-shirt pockets. And the distance from the section to the nib tip seems longer than on many other pens, compounded by the fact that Waterman reserves the lower portion of the section area for the cap-locking ridge, meaning the nib angle to paper may be different than what you're already used to, although I admit this is highly-subjective. It may or may not be comfortable for you.

Writing style
      4/9/2001:  Rod
Stephen, you are very right about writing style. I was unwittingly very heavy handed and did not like some of the pens in my collection, because they seemed scratchy and unforgiving. It was not until I purchased a truly ultra flexible nib that I discovered just how heavy handed I was - the nib would spread to maximum the moment that I touched it to paper. As I learned to write with a lighter hand and actually gained some control over the amount of pressure that I applied, I found that some pens that I disliked were very good writers. Now I tend to adjust my writing style to the characteristics of the nib I am using and I am better able to select a pen according to the writing style that I want to use for a project. I am a relative novice at fountain pens, but have been doing some research recently and learning more than I knew previously. When I said "all things being equal" I meant it - I was not comparing a steel Esterbrook to a 22k Platinum nib. I was comparing two nibs (the Aurora 14k and 18k) that are identical in all respects, except the amount of gold content. To continue my suspension system analogy: some people like to drive a Porche (14k) and some people like to drive a Rolls Royce (18k). Making a pen that every single person on this earth would like is probably impossible.

STABILiner 808

hi all, i have been searching in vain for the past couple of years for the STABILiner 808 stick pen made by schwan/stabilo... i understand they're not being manufactured any more... is this true? does anyone know where i might be able to purchase remainders? does anyone know of similar pens? i really loved this pen -- it was the smoothest ballpoint i've ever used. thanks! :kali:

Flexibility and Smoothness
      4/9/2001:  Stephen Lam
Just curious about Rod's post. The only variable affecting the smoothness of a nib is the quality of the iridium tip. It has nothing to do with the gold content. Steel nibs, for example some of the Esterbrooks, can be as smooth as gold nibs. Flexibility, on the other hand, is generally a function of the physical makeup of a nib, including the material used, design and thickness. It is correct to say that the overall "writeability" of a nib is a result of the combined effects of the smoothness of its tip and the flexibility (or otherwise) of the body. To this one must add the writing style of the individual. So the same pen may give different people entirely different writing experiences.

Flexibility and Smoothness
      4/8/2001:  Rod
How smooth a nib writes depends upon the gold content (carats), shape (width and thickness of different parts of the nib) and tiping material. A rough (poorly ground) tiping material will not make a smooth writing experience, regardless of the carats and shape. Similarly, a poor shape can not be made up for by a different carat or tiping material. "All things being equal" an 18k nib will be a smoother writer than a 14k nib. For example, the shape and tiping material of Aurora 18 and 14k nibs is the same, just the gold content is different. An 18k nib is softer than a 14k nib, but this also permits a 14k nib to have more 'spring' than an 18k nib. Think of a 14k nib as a car with a 'tight/stiff' racing suspension and an 18k nib as a car with a 'luxury/touring' suspension. An 18k nib will adjust to the contours of the writing surface and movement of you hand much faster and with less resistance than a 14k nib. But, just like a racing suspension will give you a better feel for the road, a 14k nib will provide you with more feedback and will also permit you to write faster (without getting squirrely or mushy). The length and width of the tines (and width of the shoulders) of a nib will also effect the flexibility of a nib. Long tines are more flexible, while short tines are stiffer. But, since 18k gold is softer than 14k gold, a 14k nib has more spring in it; there is a degree of pressure at which the tines of an 18k nib will bend (permanently) while a 14k nib of the same shape will still "bounce back" without suffering damage. Consequently, a 14k nib is better suited to having its flexibility increased (by narrowing the tines) than an 18k (of the same shape), because the "point of no return" amount of maximum safe pressure is reduced as you narrow the tines. But, "all things being equal" an 18k nib will write smoother than a 14k nib.

Nib Exchange
      4/8/2001:  Rajesh Mehta
Am looking to Exchange a Fine Nib on a modern Waterman Patrician (current) for a Broad, Oblique Broad or Stub. Received the pen as a gift but tend to Broad, Stub and Oblique Nibs in my preferences. Nib has been used once (for one filling) and is excellent. Thanks

Aurora Optima nibs
      4/8/2001:  Rod
Will and Rich: The line width of handcrafted nibs (like Aurora, Pelikan, Waterman, ...) can vary quite a bit, so I am not surprised that Rich's 18k Italic nib is finer than his 14k Italic nib - this has nothing to do with the material (i.e., carats) and everything with the fact that more than one craftsman makes the nibs. You can send any nib to John Mottishaw (or any of the other half dozen artisans who specialize in modifying nibs) and he will regrind/retip it to the exact width that you request. How 'wet' a nib is has everything to do with how the feed was adjusted and nothing to do with the material from which the nib was made - you can send any nib to John and he will adjust it to the exact amount of flow that you specify. How sharp/smooth a nib is has everything to do with the tiping material and how the craftsman ground it - different Medium Italic nibs from Aurora will vary a bit in their sharpness/smoothness. You can always send a new Aurora pen to Kenro (the US Aurora distributor - along with a receipt proving that you bought it from a dealer to whom they sold it) in Mineola, NY and they will exchange it for one that better suits your preferences. Aurora only makes one width (Medium) of Italic, but you can always send one to John and he can retip/regrind it to any width and sharpness that you like. John can grind formal or cursive italic nibs - formal is very sharp, while cursive is smoother on the edges. The big difference between formal and cursive is that you can write relatively fast with a cursive without catching the edge of the tip on paper. But, you sacrifice the degree of line variation (less difference between up and down strokes) to get that smoothness. Some people like one, some like the other: I have some of each (for different uses or moods).

Dan, the Waterman (Man 100) Opera is a nice fountain pen. I have been writing with one for over two years and still use it regularly, even though I have purchased more expensive pens since. The brass barrel gives the pen a good heft (if you like a pen with a little weight to it). The cap snaps on/off both the grip section and the end of the barrel, so that it stays where you put it. The carved polymer finish is comfortable to grip, attractive, and does not show fingerprint oil as easily as the smooth resin finish of the standard Man 100, which Levenger also sells for $199. The girth of the pen is the same as a Pelikan M600, while the length is closer to that of a Pelikan M800. The 18k nib is relatively large; about the size of a Pelikan M800 or Aurora Optima nib. Levenger only seems to have Fine nibs left in inventory; the Waterman Fine nib is narrower than some other brands of Fine nibs, but I like it that way. If you want a different size nib, then you can send it to Waterman/Parker Service in Janesville, WI and they will exchange the nib, at no charge, for an Extra Fine, Medium, Broad, Oblique Fine, Oblique Broad, or Stub (your choice). The pen is a cartridge/converter and uses Waterman cartridges, which are different than the international standard, but readily available at most stationary stores (including Staples). The tiping material (i.e., often called Iridium, because that was one of the original materials used) is very smooth - I have a dozen Waterman fountain pens with nibs of every size and shape and have yet to get a 'bad' one. But, the Waterman nib is a little stiffer than some other nibs. You can get a little flex out of the Waterman, but you have to really press hard, and I would not recommend pressing that hard very often with too many nibs. Of course, you can always get a 'lemon,' but if you do, send the pen to Waterman Service and they will fix it for you. I hope that SOME of this was useful information.

re:Montblanc Piston Mechanism Material
      4/8/2001:  Ulsterman
Unscrew the filler knob and take a look at the threads. If they are brass in color, you have brass innards. This is pictured at http://www.enter-net.de/auktion/auktion.htm scroll down to item #A292. There is additional information on the Montblanc filler mechanism at http://www.vintagepens.com scroll down to search, enter Montblanc and check out what Mr. Nishimura has to say about the vintage filler mechanism. I am a novice at this identfying process myself and this information is the extent of what I've found readily (actually, not so readily) available by searching on the web and checking the information at present and past auctions on ebay and penbid. Hope it helps you.

Aurora Nibs
      4/7/2001:  Rich C.
I have both an 18k and 14k medium italic nib. The 18k nib on my Mare writes a finer line than the 14k, and the edges are not quite as sharp (almost like a stub). The 14k writes a much wetter line with more line variation. I've also tried their stub, but it's too fine for my liking, and doesn't give nearly as much line variation as either of the italics. Hope this helps...

Aurora Optima nibs (part two)
      4/7/2001:  Rod Ragner
Will, I forgot. You have another option: you could send the Optima to John Mottishaw (www.nibs.com) and he will regrind/reshape it to any kind of nib that you want for $50. He could even increase the flexibility (that is what I recently had done to my Aurora 14k Extra Fine nib) for an additional $35. So, you could have your Broad modified to a Medium or Italic for $50, or you could buy another 14k nib for $150 (less some discount), or you could buy a second Optima (Bordeaux or Black) for $295 (less some discount), or you could find someone willing to swap nibs with you. I also forgot that I have a Mare with an 18k Fine nib too (shame on me for forgetting her).

Aurora Optima nibs
      4/7/2001:  Rod Ragner
I have an Aurora (red) 75th Anniversary with an 18k Stub nib, a Sole with an 18k Medium Italic nib, a Primavera with an 18k Oblique Broad nib, a Green Resin Optima with a 14k Extra Fine, and an gold plated trim 88 (same size and similar shape as Optima) with an 18k Extra Fine nib. All of these nibs are exchangeable and all of them are quite nice. I prefer narrower nibs to wider nibs and 18k nibs to 14k nibs; [it is my experience that] an 18k Aurora nib is smoother than the same size 14k nib. I hope that you can find someone who is interested in swapping nibs with you. A separate 14k nib (any size, including Medium Italic) retails for $150, while an equivalent 18k nib retails for $190. If interested in purchasing a nib, e-mail me and I will refer you to my favorite dealer.

Aurora Optima Nib
      4/7/2001:  Will Thorpe
I have a solid green Optima, about two years old, that has a Broad nib. The broad nib is a bit to much for me. I think I read that these nibs screw in, anybody know for sure? Any idea of where I could get a Medium replacement, maybe a medium italic? Any experience with the Aurora italic nib? Thanks, Will.

montblanc piston mechanism material
      4/7/2001:  j
I've been trying to find info on the net about the piston filling mechanism in modern montblancs,I remember an article that was quite helpfull in determining if you have a brass mechinism or a plastic mechanism piston filler,I forgot the details. is there anyone who knows how the diference can be seen from one mechanism to another

Duofold with vacumatic trim
      4/6/2001:  Isaacson
Ron wrote about a 1940's striped parker duofold-esqu pen with vacumatic imprint and trim. Questioned if rare. Rare- not really. Uncommon- sure. Certainly interesting. I own of few of these. 1942 was a weird year for vacs. Several odd models that year. But we're talking vacs, so what else is new. While duofolds come in three sizes, the Vacu-Folds appear (IMHO) in medium and small sizes only. Have vac imprint, have vac clip and nib (which themselves could be swapped- but not that imprint). All seem to have the 1942 "Stacked coin band". I prefer not to call this jeweler band as that band seems to have ended around 1941 and was wider than this 1942 band and had blank spaces above and below the lines. Other weird 1942 vacs with this band include the scarce correct single jewel shadowwaves. Value? Problematic. These are scarce- maybe 1 in 100 duofolds are like this. But few people hunt them. Generally I've been able to find them from the price of a similar simple duofold to about $50 above. One recently sold on ebay- advertised as scarce prototype- for considerable sum. The pen looked quite nice but I respectfully strongly disagree with prototype label. But, like most things "vacumatic", that too is a subjective call. You found a neat pen. Congrats. i still need a couple colors and sizes for my collection. But you won't be financing college with this one :-) best regards. david

TWOFERSALE
      4/6/2001:  Mike Krut
Hi fellow Pen Lovers. It's TGIF and I decided to have a TWOFERSALE. Both pens have been expertly reconditioned, so I will only point out the defect.-The Sheaffers' lever is brassed in an hour glass pattern. All my pens are guaranteed and I have a no hassle return policy, as long as the pen has not been damaged. First e-mail wins. Good Luck! 1. An excellent++ 1946 Standard single jewel Parker Vacumatic, in blue, great transparency, no brassing, no bite marks or scratches, Med. 14k nib, blue diamond clip, ////\\\\\ gf cap band; this is a very sweet pen---$110.00 2. A Sheaffer's standard balance pen circa 1936, lever fill, 14k fine feathertouch nib, no brassing of gf cap band or flattened ball clip, bright white dot, tiger eye (gold & brown) stripe, this handsome pen will last a lifetime--$55.00 Thank you for your time. Aurora Primavera Part
      4/5/2001:  Rich Matosky
Ok, here goes. I gave a friend of mine an Aurora Primavera RB as a gift and the son-of-a-gun went and broke the barrel in half. While it could be repaired by someone with the right skills, I'd really like to find a new barrel for it. Any suggestions, or if anyone has a spare lying around (don't laugh too hard), please contact me off-line. Thank you in advance. Rich

Auction pictures
      4/4/2001:  Don Lavin
Well we have finally completed the auction catalog for the upcoming Chicago Pen Auction on May 5, 2001. As a result I will now start taking the individual pics for the auction presentation, but we have uploaded to our web site some pics of some interesting pens such as the great Waterman red ripple combo from the 20's and the sensational original Pelikan with Todelo work from the 30's. So check out our web site at www.zoss.com/chicagopenshow for show info and for some of the pics with more to come. We look forward to seeing many penlovers in Chicago in May. Don

Ron's Purchases
      4/4/2001:  Don Lavin
Well Ron I would not be too upset about buying a woodgrain Waterman 54 with a Mabie Todd nib. No.4 Waterman nibs from the 20's are easy to acquire at pen shows and from "beater" 54s in black hard rubber. And the Mabie Todd nib is an excellent nib worth at least $25 as a number 4 in good condition. As for the value of your Waterman it is hard to assess without more information such as the condition of the imprints, the color, cap band, clip and lever and whether the barrel is warped or straight. All of these factors come into play when appraising a pen. As for the other purchases they may be excellent users but with cracked caps and damage the values are low. Maybe better for the good parts such as nibs, sections and feeds to be placed into better barrels. I would suggest that you did fine and that you should enjoy your purchases, put them into working condition yourself and write away. Don

Lamy 2000
      4/4/2001:  Sumi
Try as I might, I just can't bond with my Lamy 2000 Fountain Pen. I have a fine nib (writes more like medium) and an extra fine nib (writes like a large fine). The fine nib is lightly used and the extra fine nib has been used only a handful of times. Please contact me if you have an interest in this pen. I'd consider a trade. Thanks.

Pen Lover's Diet
      4/4/2001:  Bill Stevens
Here is my new Pen Lover's Diet Plan. Step 1: Select the pen from your collection that you hate the most -- ugly, makes your hand hurt when you use it, and stops writing after three sentences. Step 2: Put a black shroud over the rest of the collection. Step 3: Only use the dog-pen until you have lost 25 pounds. Step 4: On the last five pounds, remove the shroud. You may look, but not touch. Gotta go -- I need some new pants.

Pen Purchase
      4/3/2001:  Ron Meloche
Purchased a #54 woodgrain Waterman with gold trim today for62.50. Upon closer inspection at home I found that it has a Mabie Todd Eternal nib. What does this do to the value of the pen and what if anything is the pen worth in this condition.Shame on me I have to be more observant. The antique dealer is going out of business and I was blinded by the 50% off sign.Orinally the price was 125.00 I also purchased a 4.5 inch sheafre 46 special in red with gold trim with two fine cracks in the cap lip for 40.00. A fullsize green jade sheaffer lifetime with moderate discoloration it is a flattop gold trim. I paid 80.00.a heavily discolored 4.5 inch sheaffer lifetime white dot flat top with gold trim and a chip out of the cap lip. The color seems to be a brownish green color. I paid 22.50 for it. I do not know if I did bad good or what as I have no one I know of in the San Diego area to talk with. I do have 4 reference books and I refer to them constantly trying to absorb everything so when I see something in person I will recognize it for what it is. Thanks, Ron Meloche

Thoughts On Stipula
      4/3/2001:  Alan
I just wanted to tell everyone that I purchased a Stipula Duetto over the weekend (I got the blue) and after a few days of using it have determined it is one of the best pens out there for the money. Usually they are right around $200 discounted. So if anyone is considering a new pen please look at this pen! It has a great 18Kt nib and is large and beautiful and writes like a dream. I honestly have never given Stipula much thought throughout my collecting but will take a closer look in the future. Great pen - - honest.
